This is true and you should say it. May I add that Rex was literally a child assassin. That was the job he was recruited for, the job he was trained to do. Going from that to saving people, pulling back and thinking "what if I'm the bad guy?" is actually a huge leap and probably took a lot of strength to go through with. He didn't even know Cecil but he still saved him.

One particular detail I liked from the comics that I don't remember being in the show was that the original Guardians were self funded and independent from governments, including the GDA. It was only after the massacre that the GDA stepped in to manage and fund the Guardians. I think I'd adds more flavor to the story and explains why there's clashes between the new Guardians and the GDA. As I watched the first season of invincible I kept wondering why Cecil and Donald seemed so hands off and like bad managers, and the idea that this was the GDA's first time managing a high profile team like the Guardians helps to explain that

I love Gol D. Ace and I think his actions in Marineford were 200% in character and led to an amazing story arc for multiple characters. THAT BEING SAID nothing will ever make me more angry than "adoring, protective big brother" Ace laying down and accepting his fate, while his grandfather sat RIGHT NEXT TO HIM, knowing then and there that if Luffy was the one being executed the same exact thing would be happening. Maybe he still thought that Garp would save Luffy from execution but not him, but if he was smart he would have realized that Garp was never going to make any exceptions for any of his grandsons. If Sengoku had traded Ace for Luffy and it was Luffy on that platform instead? You bet your ass that Garp would have sat his but right down and done exactly zilch to free Luffy.
