A Big(ger) Year for Obscurant
The start of 2022 marks the beginning of the second year of full development for Obscurant. Though development started early in 2020, it wasn’t until 2021 that King Brick Games was founded and we really hit our stride. We have a lot planned for 2022, and...and... Whoa. Déjà vu. Feels like we were just here? Time really flies in the midst of a global pandemic when you’re creating a video game that operates partially as a response to said global pandemic.
Lucky for you -- and horrifyingly for us -- that video game is fast approaching release. That’s right: we will release Obscurant in 2022, and you will play it and hopefully like it. A concrete release date is coming soon, but just know that we are shooting for the first half of this year. As stated before, there will possibly be an opportunity to play more of the game before release, so make sure you’re in the community Discord to be the first to know.
And as ever, make sure to wishlist Obscurant on Steam, and keep checking back here for more development updates, story teasers, and other surprises! (Hmm.)

The Road Ahead
Hey folks, it’s been a minute! Yes, once Steam Next Fest was in the books, we took a bit of a break from incessant website and social media posts. BUT NOW WE’RE BACK, BAYBEE! And speaking of Steam Next Fest, a huge thanks to everyone who supported us throughout the festival. It means a lot to us that so many people played our demo, watched our livestreams, and joined our Discord. We gathered a bunch of bug reports and feedback that will help us on the road ahead. And speaking of the road ahead, what’s next for Obscurant? Well, the team at King Brick Games continues to be hard at work on the game. There’s a lot of exciting stuff coming up that will almost certainly be teased on the website you’re looking at right now. Those of you that played the demo might recall a teaser for a certain Kingdom...
Tumblr media
And speaking of playing the demo, we may have an opportunity to play more of the game in the near (ish) future. Nothing to confirm as of yet, but certainly keep an eye out in the community Discord for more announcements in the coming weeks. Until then, this is your friendly neighborhood KBG (King Brick Games) agent, signing off. 🐌

Updates and a New Look
Tumblr media
Whew, almost the end of August already? Where has the year gone? It seems like just yesterday we were getting ready to kick off 2021. Luckily, we’ve made a lot of progress on Obscurant since then. Most notably - if you couldn’t already tell by looking at the screenshot above - the game has a new look. After a lot of thought and discussion, we decided to mix things up by tweaking the art style. As you can see, the game now combines detailed pixel art environments with high-res characters and effects. We’ve found that this helps the gameplay elements pop, while also giving the world of Obscurant a unique feel that meshes well with the story we want to tell. The team here at King Brick Games is quite happy with the results so far! In other news, we are starting development on another new region of the game. This area will feature some of our most ambitious ideas yet: more unique disguises, more world-building and characters, and more ways to interact with the game world. It’s not quite ready to show off yet, but hopefully we will have more to say in the coming months. Finally, we’ll have some exciting news to share in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out on this website as well as the Obscurant Twitter to be the first to know. 👀

Follower of the Obscurance
[The following is an except from the writings of Jester, wandering disciple of the Obscurance.]
The Obscurance revealed much about this world. By not seeing, one was able to truly observe. By not hearing, one was able to truly listen.
Do not heed those who decry the almighty darkness as some cataclysm, something tragic that befell our world. Such a belief is clouded by our preconceptions of the universe and misplaced value on our own lives. The truth is that it was a course correction: a focusing of the lens through which we perceive creation. Without the Obscurance, a true crisis was inevitable - something much worse than loss of life and reformation of society.
Yes, my friends, we were on a path that we could not even see. We needed to be shaken to our cores to avoid taking this path. Some might call that a tragedy. I call it divine mercy. In anticipation of the next great reset, I proclaim these words: cease clinging on to the old world. Seek the truth. It is out there, revealed by the cosmic power of the Obscurance.

Bridges in the Sky
Tumblr media
After the Obscurance, the once-great city of Kurtovsk was mostly overrun with gangs of scavengers and other unsavory types. Finding the ground level mostly uninhabitable, they retreated to the rooftops and developed a web of bridges and ziplines to more easily move from building to building. In Obscurant, you can use this makeshift transportation network for your own devices: zip between buildings to escape danger, or cross precarious bridges while disguised under the watchful eye of dangerous bandits. Some more resourceful scavengers may have even found a way to route electricity through the metal zipline cables. Who knows what kinds of things you could do if you got access to the power source? Travel across the sky in Kurtovsk when Obscurant finally launches. Until then, keep watching here for more updates, and make sure to wishlist the game on Steam.

High Atop The Ruined City
Tumblr media
In the northern reaches of the Machine Wastes lies the city of Kurtovsk: a great metropolis laid waste by the mysterious Obscurance. Skyscrapers stretch high above the clouds, with rooftops now connected by an intricate network of bridges and cables. Only the hardiest adventurers survive up here - how will you fare? Yes, we have reached the next major phase of development for Obscurant, as well as the next major region. Kurtovsk will feature new enemies with unique mimicry mechanics, as well as region-specific mechanics to help you get from rooftop to rooftop. This region is darker than the Machine Wastes, and represents the civilization that was left behind before the events of the game. You will also meet some new characters, including a band of adventurers on a quest in the city. They will help guide you along the way and help you understand the nature of this city and the world at large. This is when the game really begins to open up, and its secrets begin to reveal themselves. Look forward to exploring the rooftops of Kurtovsk when Obscurant launches. And as always, follow us on Twitter, wishlist the game on Steam, and keep checking here for more updates.

Elegy for the Knower
Almighty darkness came to us, Snuffing out all sound. While most fell prey to nothingness, The Knowers were thus crowned. For those who looked into abyss Saw all in truest form, And Knew from that day to the last The lies that we perform. Yet Knowing is an awful fate When truth is to be feared, When those informed do not believe, And hope has disappeared. And so to Know I would not wish Upon my enemies. Instead I mourn the Knowers, Wretched living casualties. - Unknown

A Big Year For Obscurant

New characters, dialogue, and narrative elements
Expanded soundtrack
More trailers, screenshots, and possible demos!

The Founding of Kurtovsk
[The following is an excerpt from The Rise of the ESK: A Complete History by Natalya Panova, written several years before the Wasted War.]
The first settlers to arrive in the region we now call Kurtovsk were actually a diplomatic party sent by the High Council of the Western Alliance. Not much is known about the individual members of this group, though early correspondence unearthed by the University of Kurtovsk suggest they were mostly middle class government workers whose families lived in the Western capital.
What is clear is that they were sent east across the Great Plains on a diplomatic mission to establish trade relations with the noble families of the eastern Kingdom. Whether they actually attempted to complete this mission is difficult to say. It could be that their negotiations with the notoriously insular families of the Kingdom proved not to be very fruitful. However, there is some evidence that the Western diplomats never intended to follow orders at all. Here is a logbook entry written by one of the early settlers, later discovered by archaeologists in the Great Plains:
Our current materials should certainly support us for at least a year. Additional provisions can be negotiated with the Burtley contact. Note: discuss pipeline with K.
It seems that they intended to set up a long-term settlement regardless of the outcome with the Kingdom - especially since they were already in contact with the noble Burtleys. Moreover, the reference to “pipeline” could be referring to the first public sewer system of Kurtovsk, now regarded as the most advanced of its time. In any case, the Western diplomats settled in the region to the northwest of the Kingdom. They called their new city Kurtovsk, possibly a reference to the name of a founding member (though any confirmation of this has been lost to time). This put them in a perfect position to act as an intermediary between the Western Alliance and the Kingdom. Before long, the bulk of trade routes between the nations passed through Kurtovsk, and the city grew wealthy very quickly. However, this clear betrayal set up decades of enmity between the W.A. and what would become the Eastern States of Kurtovsk. Luckily, the threat of war has been stayed by the utility of Kurtovsk as a trading hub. Circumstances will need to change greatly before any true conflict can emerge.
