Gah, the T7S fandom is so dead.

I mean, it was always sort of dead, but there was a solid cohort here. But a lot of the tag (the latest tab) is now filled with unrelated stuff. The fandom is really dying, and it sucks. I want to make things, but usually, no one's around. :(

Sometimes you truly don't "have everything you need" and you're absolutely not "exactly where you're meant to be" and it's valid and fair not to work to be content and grateful in horrible situations no matter what positivity posts online might imply.

maybe an off question, but does anyone else feel like That 70's Show didn't utilize its time period enough? like it definitely had a LOT of the aspects of a small American town in the 70s, but as the series went on it feels like less and less atmosphere was given to that. idk what I'm trying to say exactly, I just wish it had even more time period details front and center.

the more I rewatch that 70's show, the more I notice how much the writers seemed to hate women (and yes I know there were women writers. my point still stands.), SA victims, and neurodivergent people. they also seemed to hate jackie specifically.

cw: for mentions of csa/sa but nothing graphic

the show canonically has jackie, a 14yo, describe experiencing coercive rape from her 18yo boyfriend, with the implications that it's repeatedly, and a laugh track is played over it. this also happens while said boyfriend is actively trying to cheat on her. (and when he does managr to cheat on Jackie, he's still supposedly having sex with Jackie, putting her health at risk on top of just being horrible).

it also has kelso, from at least 8th grade, having been preyed upon by his female teachers, and then goes so far as to have an episode where one of said teachers is his date and she justifies her actions. no one treats it nearly as seriously as they should, and it is also played for laughs.

let us not forget too that jackie's "cheating" on kelso at her job was very explicitly done with her manager, someone who is in a position of power over her while she's already a vulnerable teen, and he very deliberately grooms her into it. the show then proceeds to have jackie, the victim, put on blast for being manipulated, and the narrative/her friends and boyfriend(s) continue to punish her for that.

it's actually disgusting and beyond upsetting how wrong Jackie gets done in the show. it's always played for laughs / it being her fault despite the show also clearly showing her being repeatedly victimized and hurt. we're supposed to find her vapid and bitchy simply because she's loud and opinionated and priveledged financially.

she does become toxic if not downright abusive to kelso, which isn't good obviously, but it's certainly not out of nowhere and she literally didn't start out that way (my point being she wasn't always "bitchy" and as outwardly shallow. she actually shows a lot of care for kelso and donna in the beginning). for a good chunk of the beginning, any time jackie's bossy it's for valid reasons and not abusive. if anything she's just rude and annoying. then after they have sex, she increasingly acts more adult/sexual and meaner to kelso, because she's a freaking kid who has been forced to grow up way too fast and babysit her older boyfriend. I also noticed her fashion becoming more and more mature, which is a common thing for sexually abused kids to do; become hypersexual and try to present themselves as older than they are, because they were forced into an adult situation and this way they can have a sense of control over what's happened to them. kelso also shows this experience of hypersexuallity, but it's dismissed as "boys will be boys, kelso will be kelso".

if you took away the laugh tracks, you'd likely get some major red flag vibes like I did. teens have sex, that's whatever when it's consensual, but with kelso and jackie it canonically is not always consensual. even before that, from episode 1 kelso is trying to get into jackie's pants and only keeping her around bc he's horny. so it reads like jackie's innocence is stolen, she becomes disillussioned, and she becomes meaner because she's being sexually abused and traumatised by his infidelity and lying.

how ever unintentional on kelso's end it may be, it still has an impact on jackie's development.

that's all my rant for now, but trust I will be picking back up on this later, with more details and source material examples/credits.
