1. Motivation!!

The biggest secret for staying motivated is to KEEP. READING! Specifically good literature that inspires you and makes you /feel/ something. Music, art and movies and stuff help a lot too but I love books so that’s what I would recommend 🤗🤗 the more inspired you are by the world around u and the work others have done, the more excited you’ll be to write!!

2. Writers block

YES. So often dude. Now less so though, because writing is more like an addiction these days, but when I get writers block the best thing for it is to not pressure yourself. Close the laptop, get outside, spend time with people you love, and don’t put a time limit on yourself. You WILL come back to writing, u just need to let yourself want it first 🌻🌻

3. Fav aspect of writing?

I love the way it makes other people feel. And building a world that I wish I could visit!! But mostly just the emotion thing. I feel so much when I write, and to know that other people are feeling those feeling too is wild to me. Love it

4. Advice for consistency.

GET 👏 A 👏 BUDDY 👏👏👏

Seriously. Find a writing buddy!! Someone who can keep u accountable, read ur work, and hype u up is like the number one secret to consistency in my opinion. In all aspect of life tbh. Ofc there are going to be some times (or a lot of times) that you have to write alone, but when u can, try to partner up.

If you’re writing alone, I would also say make a space. Dedicate a specific corner, or chair, or spot in ur house or a cafe of something where all you do is write. Don’t do anything else there. Not even like other work on your laptop. JUST. WRITE. Soon you’ll start to associate that spot with writing, and it’ll be so so easy to get into that headspace.

It is officially my favorite BKDK so go check it out. Drawing fanart for fanfics is one of my favorite things ever so I'll probably do more in the future for my other favorites

WHY CHAPTER 431 OF MY HERO ACADEMIA SCREAMS CENSORSHIP

First let's start by the "afterword", the note Horikoshi left after 430 and before the extras, chapter 431.

Original japanese for those who understand.

The best traslation I found and most people are agreeing with.

Key sentences are:

1.The real final chapter is 429, 430 is more like a curtain call.

2. PS: For chapter 431, I turn off the cameras and free the characters from their dramas.

This note being left after 430 and before the extras is so important. . The clarification of "the real final chapter is 429" and 430 is the curtain call is screaming: the show has ended here. This is further stated by "i turn the cameras off" by the man who use to refer himself as the camera man, I leave you with an example.

And back to point number 2: "and free the characters from their dramas", which could perfectly be understood as "the characters are no longer tied to their previous plots and drama" no longer connected to the main story.

It may seem like a reach until here, we're just trying to convince ourselves that's not canon, right? They´re delusions, right?

The problem is how far away everything about 431 antagonizes the whole story, the characters doesn't feel like themselves, they even regress back all their development, the drawing style looks totally different and there are many irregularities that call for our attention.

Ochaco and Shoto just look, weird. It's clearly not Horikoshi's art style.

And this awful background (center) was the main giveaway.

At this point I'm getting tired since the difference is astounding, don't believe me, just check the manga.

I don't think Horikoshi would've allowed those mistakes had he have a role in the making, maybe he did, there's no saying about that, but clearly if he did his involvement was very low.

Character's development wise now.

Seriously? "Deku"? And Katsuki complaining for picking him up. He cried his eyes out when Izuku lost his quirk and now he's back at season 1?

Izuku would never in a million years turn down that offer. And if he did, it would never be like this, so devoid of emotion and empathy.

430 showed us an Izuku aiming for his dreams again and at 431 this Izuku ¿? It's okay with being a teacher? Ok. And if that's not the problem, why he outright rejects Katsuki out of nowhere? When their rivalry was one of the main points of the plots for 430 chapters and now just um over? Without justification? Ok.

Ok.

Now specifically about that ship canonization and bkdk.

Horikoshi has been doing this for 10 years. The choices he took the whole manga were incredibly intentional, all those romantic tropes given to bkdk, his interviews, all stand in direct opposition to what happened in this last chapter.

I, myself, don't know much about Jump but what I've heard is they end lot of shonens with the same heterosexual formula. I don't think all of this is a coincidence.

Something really important that needs to be adressed to is what happened back in June (I think), when suddenly MHA announced it was ending in 5 chapters could've something to do with this. The manga was suddenly rushed to its ends with unsatisfying resolutions and as if that was not enough, one month later (at most) the same happened to JJK and all of this came accompanied by a switch of one of the heads of Jump.

About 431 again though.

I was just thinking what would I do if I was pressured to write something that ruins the biggest project of my life and goes against everything I was hoping for? Refuse. Tell them to write it themselves. If I can't do anything to stop it and it'll be there, alright, but I WON'T DO IT.

And I think this could be Horikoshi's case.

I've never seen a shonen manga come so close to implying his male protagonist and his male deuteragonist are in love before. Yes, it was not EXPLICIT but it was so fucking clear if you knew how to read, all the way up to 430. All those cliches tropes he gave them, he knew, we know.

I thought I'll die trying to explaineverything that seems wrong with this with nothing to back me up but the fact that he added that note is clear for me. I'm surprised they allowed him to publish it, I thought we wouldn't even have that.

It's interesting this being posted the same day 431 comes out. Also "heroaca is pretty dark, huh?"

I'll not go into this anyways because it's kind of a reach but the conclusion is: I think it's a "soft" censorship and Horikoshi did his best to relay his message given what he had.

I think Izuku’s quirk was related to creating him or something? Maybe? okay so one question, how does your motivation not fizz out? how can you consistently keep writing without fizzing out? and so you read some works before you write or something, or is it all natural? I mean I do get random lines of inspo but its mostly random, like really very random. eg: Izuku's heart skipped a beat. Then once again. how do I turn this lil shi- into a chapter opening???? (the frustration rn is high-) I mean I have scenes written out but its mostly from in between the story, and my mind subconsciously slips into writing within my thoughts as well- yeah that's about all (i think-)

My number one secret is KEEP. READING!! And I don’t mean just works on ao3, read published books, poetry, everything that keeps you inspired to write! Right now I’m reading Tress and The Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson, and I just finished The Offing by Benjamin Myers.

I make sure to keep myself in a constant state of inspiration. Taking hikes in gorgeous nature, going to the beach, stuff like that makes me excited to go back and write.

Starting a chapter is sooo hard but here’s a couple of easy ways to get started:

1. Write out a list of what u want to achieve in a chapter. What events?? What emotions?? What state do u want to the characters to be in??

2. An easy way to start is with some sort of statement that serves as a hook to shock or engage the reader. For example for the line you have up there:

Izuku knew he wasn’t the one who had needed heart surgery during the war, but after this, he just might.

I think it's important that we, as a community, move on from this.

If you feel inspired to make angst or rewrites that's fine, it's always nice to try and put something good back into a bad story, but the ultimate trend should be away from this chapter entirely.

It's no fun if we spend the rest of our time in this fandom bitter and disappointed. I've seen entire fandoms become completely unnavigable because you couldn't take two steps without seeing reminders of what soiled it.

By all means get this out of your system if it inspired you but then it's back to AUs, back to domestic one shots, back to Kacchan's new costume, back to silly dumb pining soulmates.

We have better shit to do than dwell on this.

Chapter 431, what have u done? Part 5 - conclusion

Based on what we know from the leaks, there are many instances of hypocrisy in the conclusion of mha, but I think these are the most important. At the end of the day, I think it’s a wonderful story that happens to have a shitty ending, and I think the hate that I’m seeing online is a bit excessive at best, and downright horrible at worst. A reminder to be respectful when we have these discussions.

I will always thank Horikoshi for the incredible universe and characters he has created, but there are real issues with the ending that should be acknowledged and the people saying that everyone who dislikes the ending is delusional, hates straight ships and/or wanted a sloppy bkdk make out in the last panel is missing the point. Chapter 431, what have u done? Part 4

4) I’m sorry for everything I’ve done up until now.

Okayyy let’s get started.

Katsuki x Izuku is one of the most popular ships in mha. Whether you like it, hate it, or reject shipping culture entirely, their relationship (however you see it) is one of the main pillars of the story. I will say that I like them together, I think they make sense and their history is compelling, and I love writing them, but pls don’t disregard everything I’m saying just because of that.

First of all, hot take, but bkdk would never EVER have been canon. Shonen (particularly popular shonen) doesn’t do queer couples, at least not obviously. Notice, that’s not what many fans are concerned about. I’m going to try and unpack it as best as I can.

Izuku attempting to save Katsuki from the sludge villain was the reason All Might gave him his power. You cannot spin this any other way. If Izuku hadn’t run into that fight, he would still be quirkless. One one end, I don’t think it mattered who was in that villain’s grasp - I think Izuku still would have gone if it was someone random from school, but on Katsuki’s end, it mattered that it was Deku. In some ways, they were both catalysts to the other’s Hero journey.

Second, Izuku progress and All Might’s downfall were two of the main influences that broke down Katsuki’s superiority complex (plus realising that he wasn’t the strongest in the class, and he too needed to be saved). This break down allowed to two of them to be “proper rivals” which is a direct quote from the manga. Win to save and save to win are two halves of All Might’s ideology, and that is NOT a coincidence. In many ways, they’re supposed to be foils that build each other up. Even if you hate it, you can’t deny that they’re significant influences on each other in their hero journey.

Now, the atonement. THIS is where the hypocrisy comes out to play. What Katsuki did to Izuku in middle school cannot and should not be taken lightly. Aside from the bullying, telling someone to kill themselves is not okay. But, and it’s a big but, YOU CAN AND SHOULD MAKE UP FOR YOUR MISTAKES. This is not systematic, malicious abuse, like we saw with Endeavour (who never gets to fully atone, rightfully so that is a different situation) these are the actions of a 14 year old kid. Katsuki was cruel to Izuku, I am not trying to deny that. HOWEVER, in real life, people are not held to the horrible shit they say when they’re 14. Come on, this is obvious. Atonement requires two things: an apology, and a change of behaviour. Katsuki does both of these things. However atonement in literature, or in “not real life” or whatever, is slightly different. It ALSO requires the relationship between those two characters to be affected in some way, and this relationship change is what clues us as the audience in to whether this atonement has been successful. Take Endeavour, for example the way we as the viewer see that he has not fully atoned is via Natsuo, the son who didn’t forgive, and Shoto’s hesitance to. We get taught this as writing students, I’m not pulling this out of my ass.

The bare minimum to fulfil the message that people can atone for their past mistakes is a resolution to Katsuki and Izuku’s relationship that fulfils the arcs set up for them. Just a reminder, these arcs are: twin stars, rivals, “win to save, save to win”, “I will surpass you” otherwise known as catching up to each other, and both of them wanting to be the best Heroes in the world.

The soundest, most logical way to finish these arcs is the two of them becoming a Hero Duo. The second most is them working together, which is what Katsuki offered Izuku in the last chapter. THIS IS NOT AN ADMISSION OF ROMANCE, FFS. It’s good character development!!! You can have Izuku working sith Katsuki AND have a satisfying Izuocha romance in the same universe, they are not mutually exclusive!!! I can’t believe I needed to say that???? Be an izuocha shipper and ACKNOWLEDGE THE FUCKING STORYLINE. Please don’t make this into a petty ‘them vs me’ narrative, there was already enough of that shit with the US election.

Them going their seperate ways might even have been a satisfying ending if it had been written better, but it wasn’t. There was no evidence of that for 430 chapters. Their growth, particularly Katsuki’s was irrevocably tied to the other. Again, some of the most nonsensical writing I’ve ever seen. What it implies, whether intended or not, is that atonement is a falsity and no matter what, Katsuki and Izuku’s relationship is forever scarred by what happened when they were kids, even though the final battles in the war have evidence to the contrary. This is NOT a positive message. For more analysis of Izuku’s decision to not be a Pro Hero, pls see part 1.

3) I’ll win and be just like Deku

Ohooo boy. I think I need to preface this.

I LIKE IZUOCHA. I think it’s a cute ship. I have NO PROBLEM with the idea of this ship being canon. In the beginning, ochaco was easily my favourite character. Man she was just as UA to get that bag, that’s hard af. But they fumbled her character so badly.

Ochaco’s first arc was learning that there’s a difference to being inspired by someone, and wanted to become them. Through her (sports festival) we learn that it’s possible for motivations to change, and that being inspired by someone can make you a better person. Initially, I think her crush on Izuku was adorable, and, more importantly, IT MADE HER BETTER. I don’t think you realise how RARE that is in shonen. She wasn’t a stepping stone, she was a whole-ass character.

Then… well. She got kind of relegated to the sidelines, and most of her scenes became about her having a crush on Deku. A perfect example of this would be the final exams against the teachers scene. When I say that EVERY. SINGLE. OTHER PAIR. had some sort of growth and development in that arc, I mean it. Mina and Kaminari learnt that it’s not always great to rush into things, Kirishima and Sato learnt that strength alone sometimes isn’t enough (which sets Kirishimas later arc up perfectly) Momo learned to trust herself and act on instinct when she could, and Todoroki facilitated that by giving her confidence. Tokoyami got to experience the benefits of working with someone to make a cohesive plan, same with Iida and Ojirou, even fucking Mineta got some character motivation, and Ochaco. Learnt about her crush. That the audience already suspected. And then again, in the Prov license exam. Fan-fucking-tastic.

But whatever, I can look past that. Her character eventually got a new arc with Toga, playing into that not-everything-is-black-and-white idea and reiterating that first arc (you don’t have to become someone to like them, that’s Toga and that’s toxic), I even got behind her and Deku’s moment on the clifftop.

And then the timeskip. Ochaco is not in the top 20 Hero rankings. We don’t know WHAT she’s ranked actually. As far as I know, we don’t hear anything about her parents and their company. She’s seeing hallucinations of Toga, and (again, as far as I know) she hasn’t had any real meaningful interaction with Deku for the past eight years, bar the one month since he’d gotten his Mecca suit. Cool, cool cool cool.

She and Deku did NOT meet as equals at the end of the manga. It’s a “beginning” that doesn’t make sense thematically. If there had been evidence that she had developed more into her own person post-timeskip, I would have been fine with it, but she HASNT. And the person who had the second-most meaningful impact (narratively and thematically) is appearing in her head to tell her… get with a guy. Cool super cute. Once again, female characters in Shonen are stuck in the fucking dark ages.

Like it or not, a series with this much reach has a duty to its audience, one which, considering the treatment of female characters, mha did not fulfil.

So we learn that no, it’s actually not possible for a woman to be inspired by a man in her life unless she wants to date him, or she wants to become him. This switch-up is the definition of hypocrisy.

2) Deku is the name of a Hero!

This line is great. It sums up this idea in mha that everyone has the ability to take something that was wrong or dysfunctional in some way and repurpose it for good. Bear with me here,

Hero society at the beginning of this manga was a steaming pile of shit. We saw that again, and again, and again and again and again. Stain (being a Hero is more often than not, a selfish pursuit) All Might (his retirement collapsed society’s safety - it’s unstable) Endeavour and Shoto (you can figure this one out I think) and finally TENKO (people shouldn’t be split into HERO and VILLAIN. Because often things aren’t that simple, and hey, IT MIGHT CAUSE A WAR???). This was an /intentional, deliberate/ writing choice.

There was so much potential for Class A, the shining stars of their generation, to create something new out of the ashes of the war. A better system. SOMETHING. Instead, the Hero rankings are back, and Shigiraki’s memory is a glorified prop for a romance plot. Tf??? Did I miss six extra chapters??? Unless there’s a social revolution hidden in the extra pages of the manga, the most we got was Shoto realising he isn’t just a Hero, he can like other things too. Don’t piss me off.

This is a common pitfall in literature. “we hate the status quo, it’s bad, but sure let’s return to it after the action is all over.” I can name you 10 series off the top of my head where this is the case, but this has to be one of the worst examples of it I’ve seen.

Chapter 431, what have u done? Part 1

haven’t seen a lot of people addressing this specific part of the mha ending so I thought I’d go ahead.

Usually I can’t bring myself to gaf about shonen manga endings bc no one is ever happy, but bad writing makes me sad. Idk how, but in the space of a few chapters, mha managed to dismantle nearly every single theme that made us (EVERYONE, both sides of this stupid shipping war) fall in love with it in the first place. So. Let’s talk HYPOCRISY.

1) You too can be a Hero.

One of the biggest selling points of the MHA universe was the narrative of the underdog. That, given the opportunity, with hard work and dedication, ANYONE can be a Hero. The requirement literally was ‘my body moved before I could think’. That’s bravery. Thats selflessness. That’s how we are introduced to Izuku in the first chapter, and that’s what he showed over and over again. Helping All Might at the USJ, Iida in Hosu, Kota at the training camp, Katsuki from the villains, Eri, the war, even teaching has an element of that in there.

Chapter 430 gave him another opportunity - the Mecca suit. Based on everything we know about Izuku’s character, he SHOULD NOT have rejected the opportunity to go pro (if I had a dollar every time he said he wanted to be a Pro I would be fucking rich) and fulfil his legacy as All Might’s successor. IT SHOULDNT MATTER WHO THE OFFER IS COMING FROM. I cannot reiterate this enough.

There was a beautiful narrative in there about Izuku completing his childhood dream of becoming a Hero despite his lack of a quirk, which would have resolved that initial complication in chapter one, but that’s not what we got. Instead we got a strange ‘this is my lot in life’ kind of message, which feels soulless next to the burning passion Izuku had literally chapters ago. Lots of people are saying that his ambitions may have changed with adulthood and he’s happy with what he has, and that’s something I could get behind if we didn’t hear him yelling about wanting to be THE GREATEST HERO for literally 400 chapters. Sure, fine, make that pivot, but for the love of God, WRITE IT SO IT MAKES SENSE. One page of buildup is not enough, as a writer, a fan, and a human being with rational thought.

I'm recommending this fanfic first because (1. So far this is the only BakuDeku fan fiction that I've read twice and (2. I have read a LOT of fan fiction in my time and this one is REALLY GOOD! Actual novel worthy good!

Uhhh hard question but a good one!! I have SO MANY answers mate I hope u don't mind a list :D

I'm a very emotion-oriented writer so I tend to be the most inspired when I'm feeling what the character is feeling so I do what I can to get there - like if my character is uneasy or anxious I'll literally turn the aircon to freezing and sit in the dark to write the scene for example. Super weird but don't knock it till u try it!

I have my go-to inspo literature!! Everyone's different, but find a piece (or pieces) of media that you're just like WOW humans are amazing yk? For me that's literally anything by Hayao Miyazaki, uhh some Disney movies that make me cry, Virginia Woolf, Richard Siken, Silvia Plath, T.S.Elliot, this one Russian book called Egg and Spoon... it's whatever! Keep tabs open while u write it helps sooo much!

HAVE A NOTE OPEN!! This is a big one. Have a note in ur notes app dedicated to random lines of inspiration, that way if u think of something/see something/hear something when you're out and about u can type it down and save it for later! Funny lines my friends say in conversation, a stupid nickname one of my siblings called me, a line I randomly thought of on the bus - everything ends up there.

For setting, make sure to take the time to imagine the place! For example the forest in ahgtdd, I'd make sure I had the most vivid mental image of the roots, the moss, the lichen, the trees, the light, the rain, and only then would I start writing. I don't really like looking at pictures for that kind of stuff but if it helps u then do it!!
