Gift giving was no less a tradition for the Blacks as swapping backhanded compliments over brandy. It was more about the art of performance than a gesture of gratatude or appreciation. Back home at Grimmauld Place, a wrapped parcel hardly meant affection. It was a message—sometimes subtle, often not. On Regulus's fifteenth birthday, his mother had gifted him with a silver pocket watch. It was intricately engraved with the Black family crest, and its inner lid etched with the family motto in delicate script. It was beautifully crafted and utterly distinguishable. "This belonged to your great-grandfather, Cygnus. Rest his soul," his mother had said as she pressed it into his palm. "It's yours now. Keep it close."

Sometimes, when writing, I like to make a floor plan so that I know where the characters are and how they interact with their environment.

This is how I invision Regulus's dorm in my WIP fic: Against The Current.

Most of us fanfiction writers have heard this, in some form or another, at least once or twice:

"Write for yourself! Comments and Kudos shouldn't matter."

Sure, that is one angle to look at it. But if we were only writing it for ourselves - why would we post it? Why would go through the painstaking hours it takes to edit our works, culminate the correct tags, and post our stories to the universe (where it may or may not even be read?)

I can't speak for other author's personally. But for me, posting my stories is a way to connect with others, and to extend a branch to those who may find my stories as an escape from the monotony and day-to-day grind of life.

Yes, my one-shots may not live for long at the top of the search results and may only see about 200-500 views, with even less kudos and 1-2 small comments.

But when it comes to long WIPs that I've spent a large portion of my free time on, comments serve as a life-line; as a boost to carry on knowing that readers are not only, well, reading the work, but also enjoy it!

Yesterday, I received the most heartfelt comment (as I was lying on my couch with debilitating back pain, mind you) and I was brought to tears that someone cared enough to take the time to pour their thoughts and feelings about my work into a wonderful, mindblowing comment.

Now, I'm not saying that everyone should immedietly run to their favorate works and write a novella-length comment. All I'm trying to say is to think about the works they are reading and to show some love for the authors passion.

Comments help me, us continue on! (I've opened the next chapter document and continued working on this specific work - not that I wasn't planning to... it just gave me that extra little boost to continue to pick away at it with more energy that I otherwise would not have!)
