Ever since I learned about Not Like Other Girls I always assumed it came from the same place as "literally not like other girls." The self loathing and such. Like when I first saw commentary Youtubers dunking on them I was like "I know why they're like that. That was me. Shoot."

I remembered elementary school and making up stories about Secretly Special Girls my age who were sort of tomboys and felt isolated because they were Special as I sat on the playground piling up dirt because everyone I tried to talk to ignored me. They just Didn't Understand Me, see? Someday some magical being would come and take me away from all these Girls Who Liked Girl Things and who I was better at reading and writing than. Yes.

Fortunately I have matured somewhat. But the urge to be Special is still buried in my brain under all the years, waiting until the right cult comes along to manipulate me I guess.

Not excusing pick-me's of course, just saying that I think all of these things have a similar origin of being rejected by one's peers or society for who you are.

There's a difference between "not like other girls" in the misogynist, Pick Me(tm) kinda way, and the "not like other girls" where you're literally not like the other girls because the Other Girls (and literally everyone else) make that very clear through their backhanded comments and/or general avoidance of you, and you know something's wrong with you but you don't know what or why so you mask the self-loathing with the idea that you're actually better than the Other Girls because [insert reason], only to finally grow out of it once you get that long overdue diagnosis--

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

Please take a moment to read this. A Canadian company (Highland Copper Company) wants to build a sulfide copper mine near Lake Superior (Copperwood Project), which holds 10% of the world’s freshwater. The mine would produce 98.5% toxic waste, stored in a dam just two miles from the lake. The dam can only withstand a 1-in-100-year storm, but the area has had two 1-in-1,000-year storms in the past decade. If it breaks, toxic water could contaminates Lake Superior & nearby freshwater sources, which could lead to acid mine drainage, where sulfide minerals react with water and air to produce sulfuric acid. This acid can leach heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury into the water, severely harming aquatic ecosystems and making the water unsafe for human consumption. Similar contamination events have led to long-term environmental damage and water quality degradation at other sulfide mines in the U.S., where nearly all have failed to prevent pollution. Additionally, this could negatively impact local communities by reducing property values, limiting long-term employment opportunities due to the finite nature of mining operations, and creating economic instability linked to environmental degradation. The company wants $50 million in taxpayer funding to move forward. The Michigan Senate is about to vote, if they don’t get the funding they can’t build it.
