It’s Really Over
“ Momma how close?” Theo impatiently asked while looking for familiar objects out the window. McKenzie smiled, looking down at her sweet boy and gave him a simple “close” in hopes of settling his nerves. She knew is was a lost cause in calming the child. He was always so anxious to be reunited with his father. The thoughts of running around with his cousins, enjoy his grandmothers cookies and having Dodger in his bed made him even more excited. McKenzie always had mixed feelings when dropping off Theo with Chris. Seeing her ex with their son brought up reminder of the family Chris had always spoke of wanting during their relationship. Now that was just a distant memory of what was. Yet they had come so far from those moments.
McKenzie is brought back to the present as a all too familiar fence comes into view. The squeals escaping Theo’s lips at the sight of Dodger out in the yard. Once a safe haven for their growing love was now just a place she’d like to never visit. As the car came to a hault Chris’s figure sprinted from the porch. He loved his son, no he was completely out of his mind about the boy. With one quick motion Chris had Theo in his arms and was showering the boy with kisses. As McKenzie retrieved his luggage from the car she couldn’t keep her heart from reacting to him. Even though she was someone else’s she was particularly sure a small corner over her heart was forever his. She blamed herself for that hurt, the hurt caused by promises that were once just whispered on shared pillowcases. Setting the boy down Chris was now taking her in as she looked into the yard. How is she so effortlessly stunning he thought. He scanned her face in search of how the flight and car ride went. She was biting the inside of her mouth something she did when she was anxious. What could she be so worried about he thought. Was leaving Theo with him causing her so much discomfort. “ Did you have a nice trip” Chris’s words brought her back to the present. “ Oh yes, sorry I’m tired ” she tried to sound convincing. How was she suppose to tell him that she was not just taking a trip to celebrate a friends birthday but her very handsome boyfriend would be tagging a long.
She didn’t plan on falling for Henry and now she feels like she’s living out some weird fantasy of Captain America vs. Superman. With him it happened fast, so fast she wasn’t sure if it was real or not. After lots of flirting and side eyes between the two they found themselves seated next to one another at a cast dinner. His baby blues were pulling at her heart strings and she knew she was in trouble. The night ended with her back pressed against the front door and both of her hands in his curls. She wanted to invite him in but she stopped herself. Henry completely understood and made a deal of a nice dinner would follow . Their first date quickly followed by and second, third and fourth. By the fourth date she couldn’t control her need to feel him everywhere. So in the morning when she found her head on his chest she promised herself that she would give him a chance instead of bringing the pains of her last relationship into whatever they were becoming. That was 3 months ago. She hated the sneaking around but she also wanted to stay locked up in their own little world where there was no negative views given by the outside. McKenzie also wasn’t completely sure how she was going to break the news to Chris.
“Ummm are you sure you’re okay?” Chris asked. Something was off he thought. No way was this due to the lack of sleep. “ Ya, sorry. I’m just thinking about my flight tomorrow “ she quickly snapped back. And with that she felt a vibration coming from her pocket. As she pulled out her phone into view a picture of Henry with bed sheets bunched around his waist and a smirk that could get her to do just about anything stared her right in the face. How was she going to break the news that she’s moved on. Gave herself permission to not feel guilty for allowing this happiness. How was she going to confirm that it was all really over for them.
