An in progress shot of the concentration piece I'll be working on at home while I work on another in school. This one is more metaphorical than the last one and is going to deal with how depression, anxiety, and ADD all sorta screw up everything on a mental and emotional level. Finished my first concentration piece for AP Art Studio. I decided to knock the easiest one I had planned out of the way first. This is a 36" x 36" visual representation of the statistic that 1 in 4 people will be affected by a mental illness or disorder at some point in their life. I covered the background with black acrylic paint. Then I dripped watered-down white acrylic paint onto the canvas. After that I painted on the phrase "1 in 4" in dark red over and over in the background. The reason the white/red in the background are so muted is because I wanted to bring the figures forward more and make them pop. If the background was too bright, the piece would look too busy. After I finished the background I did a bit of math and created 25 red cutouts of gingerbread-shaped humans and 75 white cutouts. I arranged them in no particular order in a grid pattern. Overall, I think this is a very successful piece. I don't really have any personal critiques for this one, although I can always do better. @theyoungturks So. I just watched a stream of the FCC'S vote to kill Net Nuetrality. They did. I guess willful ignorance is both blissful and profitable huh, Ajit Pai? As a sixteen year old with only around 350 followers on Instagram, I might not have the ability to reach thousands of people but that doesn't mean I'm not going to shout as loud as I can. I'll be damned if I don't at least try. This is a political cartoon depicting Ajit Pai the head of the FCC, who was employed by Verizon in the past. Just to clarify those are dollar bills sticking out of his ears. Background for my first concentration piece is complete. The colors are very dark because I want to bring the lighter colored figure cutouts I made forward more. Okay! So, I'm finally starting my first concentration piece. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, let me explain. I am taking AP Art Studio. For our AP Exam at the end of the year we have to create at least 24 pieces of art. 12 of these pieces are for our concentrations, also known as our sustained investigations. We all are choosing a theme and will be investigating our topic of choice using the principles and elements of design. My concentration is going to dive into my personal issues with mental health and will attempt to connect these issues with the rest of the world in a way that people will understand to hopefully aid in the effort to destigmatize mental health issues. This first piece will be a visual representation of the statistic that 1 in 4 people will suffer from a mental illness or disorder at some point in their life. This is going to be both easy and difficult for me. Almost all of my pieces are inspired and driven by my depression, anxiety, and ADD, so I have practice expressing these feelings visually, but I usually do it in such an abstract way that the "true meaning" is almost encrypted. So I'm pretty much going to be bearing my soul to the world, but that's okay. No one should be ashamed for being sick or needing help. I'm not, at least not anymore, and I want to help others who feel like they can't ask for help or express themselves because they are afraid of judgement or being accused of putting on a show for attention to understand that it's okay to not be okay. Yeah it sucks, but you're allowed to be in pain, no matter your background. I've been doing more obvious work in the past couple months to try and get used to putting my feelings out there in a more direct way. I'm really excited to finally dive into this.
