It always happened like clockwork. Tonight was no different.

Honey almost always worked late at their office, so subsequently, they worked out pretty late. They had been a late night regular at that gym for as long as anyone knew, so the employees knew them well. They’d come in, exercise for an hour or so, and then leave without ruffling any feathers.

Darlin seemed to work out rather late as well. By “work out” they meant they’d storm into the gym at ungodly hours, not bother to swipe their membership card, and then assault a punching bag until some unknown goal was satisfied. Thus the pair’s schedules overlapped from time to time.

At first they didn’t acknowledge one another, just a vague nod in greeting whenever their paths crossed or a shrug whenever their eyes met. And for a while that was it.

But once Honey had forgotten their headphones. And an ask for a spare set had turned into a, albeit stilted, conversation about music. And that, through some miracle of social norms and obligations, had turned into a half-hearted ask about how Darlin was doing. Honey had listened to what they said, mainly grasped the idea that they were angry and needed an outlet. So they made an offer. The first of many.
