Truck It List - Vinnie Hoose & the Tumorhaulers

Oh Buse, grant me the incentive and invective to complete this splattering of a story of Warren Ham, and to do it under a deadline, lest I die with an awkward rhyme, don't let my meter peter out, let my throat avoid the blisters it’s been known to cake up with whenever this request comes from fireside kids, peer pressure, loopy loss-of-air-pressure thoughts, that’s 35,000 feet to the stat counters, and from them, down there at sea level plugging away. Today I set at the task of squirting it out with a peacock quill and Milwaukee swill, Warren Ham and his truck, couple buddies in the back, let me channel an ounce of the Ham man’s power, let my tongue run hot like a wished-for shower, prevent my lower back from cramping and clamping me up, keep my cup well-adjusted so a fastball can’t bust it, and let me hit a few curves by the end of the words, a bunch of adventures but really just one is what Warren the ham man’s serving for lunch.

Halloween Nails
These long and yellowed
Halloween nails on monster feet,
they scrape my trail
like breadcrumbs in the scary wood
in loops throughout my neighborhood.
I try to keep the gunk at bay,
scrub Head and Shoulders twice a day
beneath these cracking overhangs,
these fangs of feet, these keratin bangs—
but what'll I do if my nails go clear
and ghostly bedmates reappear?

some/one/none
how many days
will you have
to keep going
waking brushing
rushing (optional)
out to work
back to home
day after day
until you're grown?

Anywhere
Is in walking distance
if you have enough time,
if you can walk or
roll or slide in a line
not always straight,
if you can hurdle a gate
or pick a lock,
skirt the view of a cop,
tunnel under
or bust on through—
start walking,
we're waiting for you.

Verses of Fungi
Warty, spotty,
lumpy and stringy
in a billion-year kingdom
stretching underground,
shooting spores to the sky,
landing in petri dishes, eyes.
Killing bacteria, making cheese,
intoxicating varietal squeeze.
Scum in our shower,
gunk under toes—
just a few places
poetry goes.

Couchours
So many hours home on the couch!
I'm guilty as my spouse:
We click the clicker and Netflix flickers,
the serial killer's plot gets sicker
with every passing season.
We seize all reasons to leisure,
to freeze our commitments on Saturday night
and tan or shiver in cinema's light.

Under The Hood
The motor’s constant rattle
brings me to my job,
follows me to lunch,
sends me home with nightly sobs.
I can't pinpoint the rattle
and soon I'm going to snap,
but not before the crucial bolt
that sends me to my nap.

Psalms of Haldiram's
Pledge allegiance to Haldiram's,
skydrop spicy Haldi-bombs
till bellies round the world stuff full
of Haldiram's comestibles,
and every tongue, both east and west,
is breezed by Haldi-breath (the best!)
and Haldi-folks of every land
hold cakey, sticky Haldi-hands.

Cabin Fever
The joy of amounting to nothing:
ecstatic there's no lens,
no crowd, no tweets or retweets,
no followers or friends.
Sit in your cabin and whittle,
whittle and burn what you chip,
empty the ashes at sunrise,
carve again under your whip.

Sleep Mode
One day I'll crack the code
of what puts my laptop to sleep.
I'll tap into its rhythm,
I won't be stalled by a blackout
as I turn to the keys,
I'll be able to continue
where I left my ideas.
My battery will be effectively rationed—
now stop my body from crashing.

Never Hide
At this
point eyeball
the little things
and try to square
them up as
best you can—
but still
guess by
hand.

Sail From Home
We can explore on a sofa,
we can sit on the sea,
a window gives a tease of wind,
a teabag buzzes caffeine.
All we need's the woo of woods,
a star to start the day,
a bathroom towel on the hook,
a nightly tidal wave of books.

Next Best
Brooklyn's over, Portland's done,
tell you where to find the fun:
Utica, Erie, Tallahassee,
buy yourself a palace (classy),
hit up Boise, Appalachia,
catch a rattler dashing at you—
or return to where you grew,
where your mother's missing you.

Are you Rodrigo, Merlin, Kazaam,
Samantha, Elvira, or Gordon Japan?
Huck or Matilda or Brutus or Fogg,
Aaron or Cal or a wandering frog?
Dig deeper daily through library shelves,
doubting you'll ever find all of yourselves.

Rule One
A rhyme doesn't have to be wild,
outlandish, or hew to a regular stride.
It would rather not. It's the urge to step
off the bus and walk the rest of the way,
the day that gets colder at sunrise,
the half-bag of candy you didn't mean to eat
but ate. Which is to say a rhyme—
no matter the time, location,
inflation it provokes—is fine.

Be careful with your letters—
Each can be
folded in a dictionary,
twined in an attic,
scanned in an alien archive,
compressed into Duraflame wood.
What's the difference between each fate?
All just crumbs on the black hole's plate.
