My honest review of ‘Crimes of Grindelwald’ (!spoilers!)

Or how I named this movie in my head after watching it- Fantastic Beasts: Spilling the Tea. 

Ok, so I don’t normally post those kinda things on my feed but my burning passion for anything wizarding world related has brought me here to discuss. I was one of those fans who actually loved the first film, I love exploring this more adult version of the wizarding community. I was a little scared to watch this one bc of all the bad reviews that came out a couple of days ago, I was really hoping this isn’t another cursed child situation, where Rowling tries to come for the original story and kinda messes it up in the process. Well, I can gladly report that it’s not (entirely) the case. I would definitely say this movie is far from perfect, that it’s not as good as the first one (however also better in some ways)- the story is told in a pretty sloppy way as a whole. I can hardly see how someone who has not read the books/is not an HP fan will understand most of this movie. I didn’t mind Johnny Depp as Grindelwald. I loved Tina and Dumbledore (yes yes yes give me all the hot young version of that character please) and I enjoyed the beasts. All the other characters were very meh. Newt was extremely annoying in this one. So were Jacob and Queenie (what the hell happened to those characters?). I liked Leta, I didn’t like the story they gave her towards the end, it felt very shoe horned and unnecessary. I didn’t enjoy the queerbaiting side of Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s relationship. However- it lines up with the original story- They were never in love. They started out as friends, then Dumbledore started to have feelings for Grindelwald, feelings he never admitted to anyone (never mentioned in the books anyway). So yes, I wasn’t expecting an lgbt love story in the first place. However I feel like JK needs to handle that relationship with a bit more care- which can also be said for most of the details revealed in this movie. I’m not sure how I feel about that twist in the end. It kinda makes sense but also doesn’t at the same time. So we’ll have to wait and see what they do with it in the next one. I also figured out when I left the theater that I’ll have to watch this movie again pretty soon so I can catch some of the little details that I missed the first time. My final word is that I obviously enjoyed Crimes of Grindelwald bc I’m such a massive fan of this world, but it was one of weakest entries in the entire franchise so far unfortunately. I really think they need to slow things down in the next one and keep it simple, get rid of unnecessary characters (there was just too many of them ugh) and focus more on Dumbledore and Grindelwald. * Mirthe Van Boven does Cairo *

So this is one of my fav illustrated projects from end of year 2 in art school. The character is called Mirthe and she started out as a collage. Then we slowly had to develop it, give it personality and stylize it. The location, Cairo, was chosen for me by the teacher, but I ended up more than happy to get it. It was def challenging to do all those things in about a month but I really enjoyed every minute of it.
