RPG dreams
180 posts
Sometimes I daydream about old rpg characters and worlds I've played.  I'm going to post stuff here that captures my attention.  Mostly OSR in inspiration but non-aligned and non-partison for the most part.  One of my long term interests is turning historical spells from real world historical spell books into RPG spells.  We'll see how it goes.

Chronicle of Achlyon – Cycle 9, Entry 66: The Unmaking of the First Water Clock
In the ninth cycle of the First Water Clock, the city of Achlyon suffered a most wondrous calamity. The clock, long considered the symbol of mortal mastery over Gloomstrand’s timeless mists, was unmade not by war, nor weather, but by the intercession of a Fata. She was known to those who dared name her as Plumeria of the Pale Rushes—a solitary and unbound fay of…

Is Gloomstrand Sword & Sorcery?
Genre is always a bit of a trap, but it’s one I willingly walk into with Gloomstrand. I’ve had people ask if it’s horror, or fantasy, or folk tale, or weird fiction—and the answer is yes, but not comfortably. Gloomstrand doesn’t sit cleanly in any of those. It lingers at the edges of genre, the same way it lingers at the edge of the world. If I had to name it, I’d say Gloomstrand is folk horror…

Introduction to the Gloomstrand fiction and worldbuilding project
The Gloomstrand blog is an experimental writing and worldbuilding project in which the boundary between fiction and setting is deliberately blurred. Rather than presenting a static gazetteer or codified lore, Gloomstrand unfolds through narrative—through lived moments, remembered terrors, strange encounters, and the uneasy hush of things only half understood. Fiction is the mechanism of its…

Warabouc
Spirit of Watching Hunger “It made no sound save the hush of fur on fern, but I felt its gaze press into the corners of my mind. It did not chase. It did not threaten. It merely watched—long enough to know my shape, long enough to know I would come again.” Appearance: The warabouc resembles a tall, loping beast cloaked in matted gray fur, its body lank and disturbingly elastic, like sinew…

Welcome to Gloomstrand
An Otherworld of Eternal Dusk and Unquiet Magic Gloomstrand is a mythopoetic world-building project steeped in the shadowy roots of folklore, demifay sorcery, and grimdark wonder. It is a place without night or day, where the sun never rises and the moon moves unpredictably, if at all. The skies are choked with perpetual twilight, and the land breathes with ancient, half-forgotten magic. Over…

The Pulps!
I've got a project coming up and as preparation I'm trying to get better at emulating that '70s beat up paperback look using Photoshop.
These images use techniques like photo collage, reticulation noise, gradient mapping, and texture overlays.
They use free images from Unsplash and The NYPL Digital Collections. Free fonts from Fontesk. Plus lots of info from YouTube tutorials like TextureLabs and Spoon Graphics.
It's been really fun so far!
