I wanted to ask if it was considered taboo or bad for a person who isn’t Arab or MENA or Southeast Asian to create an oc based off Aladdin due to the orientalism that went into the movie, and a different tale should be chosen entirely, even if this person wanted to use actual perspectives from Brown people and base the oc from a specific region. And look to Brown people for help designing the oc. I have seen other Brown people redesign the Scarabia uniform so that it isn’t orientalist on Twitter if you look up Scarabia redesign I think. I wanted to ask you before since I did plan on doing this but I’m not from those regions and wanted to be respectful. I also didn’t want to put unnecessary pressure on you.

i think ocs based on aladdin are completely fine (ive got a genie oc who follows more jinn lore but ultimately they're based on the genie from the film). the only issues i really see arising is when they follow along with the orientalist tropes from the disney source material. i think if you do make an aladdin oc, be mindful of naming them and where they are from. are they south asian? if so, what ethnic group are they from? how does their name or dress reflect? and the same goes if they are arab or amazigh or kurd and so on.

as it pertains to other tales entirely, there are plenty. you could pick something from 1,001 nights or any other MENA folktales. i would love to see an oc based off of the kurdish 'shahmaran' or any other folk or myth.

don't worry about it!! i quite like receiving these sorts of questions and honestly im sooo used to orientalism. in twisted wonderland i find it is not as in your face because i think collectively we realized aladdin is not representative of any culture. occasionally while playing the game i'll scrunch my nose and think "damn this is off" but thankfully it isn't too bad (save for that fairy gala exotic comment omg). i love seeing the redesigns too!! i noticed genshin artists doing the same thing when sumeru was released which i loved.

i know some people think that because twisted wonderland is a japanese IP, it cannot be guilty of orientalism since it is a part of when the colonial empires referred to as "the orient" and i say no. ultimately, orientalism is the view of the so-called orient by by colonial powers, and these colonial powers have cultural hegemony. disney movies and other american media help further american "soft power" and because of this country's history, a lot of it ends up being orientalist or is used to manufacture consent for their foreign wars (aladdin was meant to take place in baghdad, iraq but they needed to manufacture consent for the invasion and it was just after the gulf war so iraq could not be this cool magical place).

japan has a history with americanization post-ww2. after the nukes were dropped in japan, the usa went in and basically helped rebuild the country, but on their terms and under their economic system. why the fuck are there so many american bases in japan?? and why are these bases in the same areas where sa cases seem to spike? none of it is coincidental, ultimately. of course, it is no surprise that japan and japanese media depicting other parts of the world ends up being orientalist because of how america has cultural hegemony over most of the world, and the way the usa has been tied to japan since 1945, but in the age of the internet, that isn't really an excuse for orientalism.

Twisted Wonderland OC (Rielle)

(RSA 2nd year)

A design I came up with since it mermay. The character very much a work in process but here some possible idea if you all want to give your thought in it.

When he joined the track club, he was one of the worst members at the start. But with a great deal of practice and enthusiasm, he soon became a key player.

He likes to collect all types of knick-knacks on land, including trash like bottle caps. Maybe with all of this trash, we would start making sculptures with it.

Maybe he muted (like since birth). Since the sign language he used is not a spoken language, it doesn't get translated to the other student with magic. He has a friend or a talking crab who helps communicate for him. But there are some students who would take up sign language to communicate with Rielle. If Rielle ever met Gidel, I see them having a cute interaction.

Very stubborn, like if he has an idea of what he's going to do, he's going to do it regardless of what everyone thinks.
