I’ve learned through therapy that I’ve been SA’d most of my childhood/teenage years because I truly didn’t know what consent is. Comes with the territory of being in a high control group of fundamentalism I’ve learned.

When I look in the mirror, sometimes I’m transported back in time to being that girl who got SA’d. I bought temporary tattoos and put them all over. Turns out, they really help keep me in the here and now because I don’t look like my old self.

I feel so much freer that I want to make my tattoos a reality. I have a butterfly tattoo booked for next Thursday! 🦋

I'm healing from religious trauma and escaping a high control group. I was raised fundamentalist Christian (Church of Christ) in the Southern US. I was in the high control group for about 20 years. After years of therapy and exploring spirituality on my own terms, I became a Hellenic polytheist pagan. I'm currently in EMDR.

Hello! I have a few. I'm still working my way through the Hellenism-focused books out there.

Theogony by Hesiod is a great book for understanding how the families of the theoi were created and how they were understood.

Hellenic Polytheism: Household Worship by LABRYS I love love love. It gives detailed instruction of historically accurate household worship. It shows you how to set up a home altar and a few rituals.

Mystery Cults in the Ancient World by Hugh Bowen dives deep into the mystery cults with lots of historical context.

The Waters of Mnemosyne by Gwendolyn Reece is another one of my favorites! This book is a great catch-all for Hellenism topics that are beautifully presented. There is a meditation to connect with each Olympian.

Hellenismos by Tony Mierzwicki gives wonderful historical context and how it can translate to present day practice.

(I do not recommend Secrets of Greek Mysticism by George Lizos.)

I’m processing religious trauma memories and escape from a high control group through EMDR in therapy. I haven’t had an altar in a couple months to try to be as neutral as possible during this process.

Lately, something has shifted. I feel 100% sure I want to be a Hellenic polytheist. Talking through my religious trauma has allowed me to see that spirituality is part of who I am as a person, and many people took advantage of it.

Hellenism is basically the complete opposite of Christianity. Through therapy I’ve been able to see why I feel so much more at home in HelPol.

So, I’ve decide to build an altar to the Theoi.
