HtG Chapter 7 snippet:
“So, Danny—how do you know Jason?” Dick asked casually as his hands settled into the pockets of his pants.
Danny glanced at Jason, noting the clenching of his jaw as the rest of his face remained impassive.
“Oh—we’re newly acquainted. I was in search of an intern for a research project I’m doing, and Jason was interested in the position,” Danny cheerily replied. “Isn’t that right, Jason?”
Danny knew better than to goad Jason in an unfamiliar dynamic—but something about testing his restraint appealed to his impish nature. Or perhaps his earlier prank hadn’t felt like enough retribution for being put in this situation without a head’s up or choice in the matter.
To his credit, Jason didn’t so much as flinch, even as Dick and Bruce both leveled him with a look of disbelief.
“Is that so?” Dick asked with a grin, a hint of amusement tangling in his voice.
Jason gave a single nod.
“Yes,” he said steadily, giving nothing away. “It turns out Danny’s research project centers around a mutual interest.”
Bruce’s eyes narrowed, clearly doing mental triage on this unexpected revelation.
“And what project might that be?”
That’s when Jason’s grin sharpened. He shifted just enough to face Danny, voice dripping with mock innocence.
“Yes, Danny. Please… enlighten them about the goal of your project.”
Danny had to school his expression—because, okay, maybe he’d jumped the gun and hadn’t exactly thought through how to answer that. And sure, Jason had said these men could be trusted, but somehow he doubted they’d appreciate a response along the lines of: Oh, you know—Jason and I are both linked to this Lazarus Pit/Well thing that might have a built-in homing beacon, which might or might not be tied to an ancient prophecy from the Infinite Realms—aka the Ghost Zone—that I’m intimately familiar with. And I need Jason because he’s got the inside track on some Assassin’s guy who basically has a monopoly on the Pits/Wells in the physical realm.
“Oh—yes! My research project, I would love you tell you about that… um,” Danny couldn’t hide his stiffness as his gaze shifted around the room rapidly, as if the answer might be hidden somewhere among the opulent decorations.
Bruce’s brow furrowed deeper. Dick’s lips twitched, caught between amusement and worry. Jason looked pleased with himself—the bastard.
Before Danny could dig himself into a hole he couldn’t climb out of—salvation arrived in the form of his sister.
“Danny’s been contracted by a private client,” Jazz said smoothly, “to locate a particularly elusive ancient artifact. It’s tied to several obscure historical records and, if verified, could be of considerable academic value.”
She didn’t even blink.
Jason glanced at her, an eyebrow raised, but didn’t contradict a word. Danny blinked, then gave an awkward little nod.
“…Yep. What she said.”

HtG Chapter 6 snippet:
Jason hadn’t known what to expect when the Pit first stirred.
Something terrifying, probably—larger than life, capable of catastrophic destruction.
Definitely not a guy his age, halfway through a basket of fries, talking through mouthfuls like they’d known each other for years.
“…So then I got into the mystical-and-occult thing,” Danny was saying between bites. “Started traveling, because hey—wasn’t good at school anyway. Met an Oracle in Greece, she gave me some riddle, I followed it to Sudan, and bam—found the Pit. Or Well. Whatever.”
And yet, the Pit stirred contently beneath his skin, practically purring with delight at the proximity. Did he feel the same thing?
“When I touched it, I swear I got yanked somewhere else—another dimension or something. Hurt like hell. Don’t remember much after that. Decided I’d bitten off more than I could chew, came to crash with my sister for a while. And then you came along and ruined my vacation.”
Jason’s burger sat untouched. He was too busy reassessing everything he thought he knew.
Danny’s eyes flicked to Jason’s fries.
“You gonna eat those?”
Jason pushed the basket across without comment. Danny grinned and immediately drowned them in mustard. Jason’s eyebrow twitched.
Chapter updates tomorrow! 🙂‍↕️
