So, our trio, Mila the half-Drow Barbarian, Mith the Tiefling Knowledge Cleric and Charlie Bludstarved the Dhampir Shadow Sorcerer. We'd been sent on a mission to the North to find a the fourth of 4 special rings in an ice cave. Despite having been hooked up with some furs from our employer, Lil Lug, the tiny yet powerful gangster goblin, we still weren't used to the frigid temperatures and the cave was about 12 days away from the nearest fishing village by foot. The owner of the village inn, Bruce the merfolk lent us his dog sled with the condition that we bring back 400lbs of meat—any meat—to get them through the winter. Sure, no problem! Turns out it was a sled pulled by 4 dire wolves. Sweet! Booked it up to the cage with a clutch animal handling check by Mith to drive the sleigh. Then the easy bit was over. We ran into a white dragon wyrmling—200lbs of meat, easy, according to our DM—but by the time we had the upper hand in battle it turned tail and ran. After exploring further we found a huge frozen cube with weapons sticking out. Okay, a little suspicious so Charlie attacked it from afar with a firebolt. Big mistake. Huge. Turns out it was a Gelatinous Cube. Charlie got enveloped and hit with 12 acid damage, which wasn't great when his HP is 14. Yikes. With some lucky maneuvering and roles we managed to escape—! The next thing we come along are the bodies of 2 slain and disembowelled adventurers on the floor. We're pretty beat up at this point, and lacking in the meat we promised, so at this point begin discussing the other ethics of taking these bodies as... meat... We ended up narrowly escaping the yeti that had killed these two, and later went hunting and found 400lbs worth of game, so the two bodies ended up just being dire wolf chow. Yeah... he's a good Cleric!

KoFi Charms! ❤ ☕
It is dangerous to go alone, take one! Aaaaaand perhaps help me to save money for a new computer?!
Hi everyone, Del here, I have few things to share~~!
Firstly, if you have caught my update posts you might know (or not, no worries!) that my health isn’t the best, especially as of late. Increased issues sadly making it hard for me to work on my regular commissions and sometimes even keeping up with simple tasks (like reading or chores) turns into mission impossible.
So I decided to change and limit my commission settings, and to make a non-regular commission option that would be less time consuming yet still cute and fun to work on. And that’s how my “KoFi Charms” came to be. I have launched them through my Patreon Discord for my Patrons at the weekend, got the cutest positive feedback and now it is open to public.
I started with making example ones, my aim was to draw my own OCs from various universes and settings I play or daydream to play. However, I have encountered another obstacle other than my health; my computer. Nine Blue screens per day! Random crashes when saving! Unresponsive programs in the middle of a saving progress! Corrupted saves that persistently triumph all kinds of back up! Leg-burning over-heating issues! And many many others. It is not only time consuming but it is also emotionally exhausting, stressing to lose works and facing with technical difficulties so often. I have been wanting a new computer for ages and thanks to a friend and their siblings I now have a price range to aim for so I decided to make this the goal of my KoFi Page and Charms.
That’s said, if you liked my KoFi Charms and wish to get your own, simply follow the steps! Go to my KoFi page to buy me enough coffee for your preferred charm (head, half, full?) AND make sure you get in touch with me via e-mail for refs, details and questions you have! You too can enjoy your cute KoFi Charm with the knowledge of adding some extra coins in my piggy coffee bank for me to get a better equipment to work more efficiently!
Also not to forget that my Patrons get an early access to this, just as they get to view all my finished works a week early than public (along with many rewards that varies from tier to tier). They also have one Full Charm as a freebie (and will get another one in every 6 months!), plus they get to have the high res .psd files of their charms and they always have priority in all commission queues! So, if you are a supporter at my Patreon make sure to get yours, and if you are not, well… what are you waiting for! ❤

Cozy Boys
Tumblr media
The familiar smell came wafting over from the kitchen of their cottage. Oz had heard the tale of Kaid besting Baba Yaga in that Cocoa cook-off a few years ago, and he didn't doubt it—though her cooking skills were legendary, Kaid’s cocoa was mythic. He turned the corner and saw the smaller frame of his husband stirring a pot of the rich chocolatey liquid on the stove.
Kaid had been letting his hair grow out and there was a short braid which fell down his back. The Warlock was humming contentedly, as he tended to do while focused—be it making cocoa or crafting magic items together in their workshop.
Since that fateful day where they all got together and stopped the apocalypse many moons ago, Kaid had mostly retired from adventuring. He'd parted ways with his closest blood brothers in battle, The Daddies—Hans von Panzer and Charlie Bludstarved. Kaid wasn't one to go on at length about their exploits, but Oz did understand that the Rogue and Bloodhunter saved the Warlock's skin more than thrice. It must have been a big change at first, having spent nearly every day with them for almost two years, to be suddenly separated.
The separation made sense, however. Brought together be it by fate or chance, though they meshed perfectly for that period of time, the three had very different personalities and very different goals. Hans von Panzer, now with his ever-widening reputation as the fearsome Headhunter. Said reputation growing somehow more prominent and more shadowy as the years continued on.
Charlie Bludstarved, the Dhampir Bloodhunter. Always on the prowl for new creatures for his fledgling brewing business. Kaid always had some spooky tale of his to report after they occasionally bumped into each other at the university in Leefside.
Oz had always liked those two. He still had some posters he’d saved from when the Daddies had helped him with his campaign to become the Shepherd of Ermath.
They still got together for most big birthdays and of course their huge anniversary party once a year, but that was a far cry from the companionship of the adventuring days, it seemed to Oz.
Kaid was sprinkling a little powder from a jar labeled "secret spice blend" into the pot and he still hadn't noticed Oz had entered the room. The Warlock still hadn't divulged the contents of that secret blend either.
One might have thought that Kaid would find their quiet life dull after all those adventures. But Oz knew that he was content. He could hear it in that happy hum. He could see it in his relaxed posture, and little curl of a smile. But still...
He watched as the smaller Tiefling opened the cupboard and casually levitated... three mugs down from the shelf. Taking the pot from the stove Kaid deftly poured up three steaming hot mugs and was about to grab the marshmallows when—
"Hey hun, cocoa time?"
\Kaid turned, and smiled sheepishly, "Oh, Oz! I didn't notice you come in. Yeah I had a craving. Thought I'd bring you a mug!"
Oz had a kind yet slightly amused expression on his face, "Still miss them, huh?"
"W-what? Who?—oh." The Warlock had turned and noticed that he'd pulled 3 mugs, "Old habits die hard, you know. The recipe is perfect for 3, changing the ratio is... well, yeah, okay. I do." He flushed, already red skin darkening.
"Now, that's alright, I didn't mean anything negative by it," he put a comforting hand on his husband's shoulder, "You know, I miss them too. Thinking back to when The Daddies swooped in and saved the day, helping me with my campaign... makes me nostalgic. Plus, you know I can put away two mugs."
Kaid smirked at that and started to reach for the marshmallows.
Oz thought for a minute before grinning slightly, "Actually for a second I thought you were hinting at something."
"Uhhh... What?" Kaid paused, frozen mid action, holding a 'mallow over a still steaming mug.
"You know, our business is getting off the ground, you have that swanky Professor job... maybe it's time to start a family?"
Plop
The Warlock had dropped the marshmallow, already turning an indescribable shade of crimson.
"If you're not ready, we can take our time, I just thou—"
With his now empty hand he grabbed Oz's.
"No! I mean, yes! I mean, but—just..." he trailed off, flustered, "How?"
Oz's face lit up at that, "Are you sure?" He was excited though, and launched right in, "I'm not sure how the whole egg thing you guys keep talking about works, but I have an idea."
"Yes, of course I'm sure!"
He leaned down for a kiss, taking both of Kaid's hands. Then, leading him forward. "If that's so, then... follow me..."
"To the...?"
Oz looked at him intensely, then winked, "To the workshop! Oh let's bring that cocoa, I think it may fuel the, uh, creative process."
It took a little more than one batch of cocoa, double dose for Oz or not. Luckily they had prepared a lot of stock for their shop because there were many long... strenuous nights in the workshop... crafting! However, with some sugar, spice, metal, magic and everything nice—Oh, and don't forget the secret ingredient! Yeah, it's love, so sue me—finally a little metal egg baby was born? Hatched?
They called everyone to the Crystal City for the birth party—though it was quite the unconventional one. Kaid was able to make a mega-batch of the precious hot cocoa as they welcomed all their friends and de-facto family.
And thus the two cozy boys had a cozy family of three, with a little construct named Sudo and became cozy dads. While their small kiddo couldn't drink any cocoa they were a welcome addition and just made a full life that much fuller.

Monumental [Kaid/Oz]
Tumblr media
They sailed across the Stillwater Sea on their way to the Crystal City once again, its glittering reflection almost unbroken on the surface, like a mirror. Kaid munched on some of the mushroom jerky the new ferryman Cheech had given to him as he gazed through rose-coloured spectacles. The Dwarf ferry driver puffed up and blew into the sails with quite a waft of some kind of smoke—piloting the craft same way his predecessor Merren did—propelling the boat across the glass-like surface.
Merren's snack mix had been a little bit more to Kaid's taste than the dried mushrooms, but, well, what can you do? The Daddies had elected him as a government official and so the Warlock doubted that the former ferry driver had much time for making copious amounts of munchies.
Hans and Charlie were kicking back in the small boat, watching the clear water.
It wasn't too long before they arrived in the port and jumped onto the docks. If they had thought the city was thriving the last time they were there, they were mistaken—it was easily twice as bustling this time, and their fans were out in full force. The Daddies were notorious, and that hadn't changed.
Saving a city does wonders for your reputation.
Kaid didn't like to let it go to his head too much, preferring to be a little less infamous, especially with his continued... interest in the Crystal City. Speaking of which...
"Hey guys, do you mind if we, uh... head to the Temple District?" Kaid asked Hans and Charlie, darting his eyes to avoid eye contact. "Maybe we could try and be a little more subtle, too?"
Hans was sauntering in a satisfied manner, his posture tall. Maybe basking in the praises of the fans a little bit? For such a sneaky Rogue he could sure draw attention, Kaid thought.
"No problem, Kaid. Wouldn't want to keep you from your BF." Charlie grinned and nudged him with an elbow. "Can't tone this down though." He gestured to Hans, whose red cape was billowing, a severed and preserved Drow priestess head on each hip.
In fact, subtlety was quite out of the question, as they would soon find when they arrived in the Temple District. They found that their modest group statue was gone. The one that had been constructed soon after they eliminated the Crystal Cult from the city, effectively saving it from destruction.
In its place was something new. This was way bigger. The smaller monument had been replaced with a huge metal sculpture of the three of them, easily twice their height. Posed in the midst of battle, the three of them looked heroic and magnificent.
That being said, the posing was a little... unusual, for someone aware of the group dynamic. To start, their tallest and most imposing, Hans. Giant metal Hans was crouched at the bottom front, daggers ready to strike. Looking intense, of course, but still.
Charlie was next up, the surprisingly beefy former Ranger, now Blood Hunter. Dealer of massive damage. Giant metal Charlie had an arrow knocked, bow pulled taut, about to loose. That typical aloof and relaxed expression on his metal face.
Last, typically found in a corner to cover his back, or about 120 feet away from a threat, was the Tiefling Warlock Kaid. Metal Kaid was posed at the top of the monument, his hair still long, hands casting a familiar spell. Looking… actually kind of badass? Little, real Kaid squinted upwards. Hold up a second, did this monument look kinda handsomer than would be accurate?
"Huh, that's interesting." The Warlock heard Charlie, who was taking a look at the affixed plaque’s inscription.
"What is it?" Kaid jogged over.
"Look here, 'Sponsored and built by Oz, the Shepherd of Ermath.'" The Dhampir pointed out, his chill expression curling into a little smile.
Hans crossed his arms, looking at the inscription and then back at how the statue was posed. He threw a little side eye at the shorter Tiefling, "I see how it is."
Kaid threw up his hands, flushing a little. "Look there's some clear favouritism here... and I'm not mad about it," he declared suddenly. As much as he liked flying under the radar, he was honestly extremely touched by this masterpiece.
Charlie clapped him on the back and Kaid jumped. "Go find Oz. Let's hit the bar, we'll meet you there!"
"Crystal Mug. See you there," Hans nodded Kaid's way. He turned and his cape swirled around him. God that guy was cool. Charlie gave the Warlock a wink and a lazy salute as he strode to catch up with the taller Half Elf.
Kaid took another admiring look at the massive piece of art and then hustled off to find his favourite Cleric.
Tumblr media
The Warlock guesstimated that it was about evening time so he headed directly for Oz's cottage. Knock or unlock. Knock or unlock... he fiddled with the key around his neck on the way over. The one Oz had given him last time.
Unlock. Came a command inside his mind.
Kaid sighed slightly. The voice of his Patron was harder and harder to ignore.
Look Zathog, I'm not soliciting relationship advice from you.
...
The staticky and warped “silence” spoke volumes.
You know what? Unlock sounds alright. Kaid thought better of pressing this issue, palming the key, and flipping it towards the lock in a little flourish.
He opened the door noisily, trying to make it obvious that someone was coming in. Kaid coughed. "Honey, I'm home...?" he tried the phrase on for size. Fuck, that sounded dumb—
Too late to overthink it, the familiar and beaming face of Oz popped around the wall from the living room, toothy grin widening as he visually confirmed the situation. "Kaid! You're back!"
"It's me, haha, in the flesh, it's so good to see yo—" he had been awkwardly turning to shut the door and found himself interrupted by a tight hug.
Oh my god, why do I ever leave? The fleeting thought came to him as he relaxed, momentarily loosening the taller Tiefling's grip to turn to face him and return the embrace.
"From your letters I wasn't sure if you were heading back here at any point, or just going to send me another message telling me you almost died..." Oz's expression looked amused, but Kaid could tell there was some legitimate concern there.
"I didn't want to worry you, but it's been rough. For me. I'm not as strong as Charlie and Hans." Kaid recalled a couple of near brushes with death, in the ziggurat, against the Dracolich. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for them."
"Well, we should celebrate, then!" Oz smiled. "Where are our other heroes?"
"Actually, I came to whisk you away to the bar. They're waiting for us! But, uh, first I wanted to say something." Kaid paused briefly, taking a breath, "Thank you, for the monument. I didn't know you were into such grand gestures."
"For the heroes of the city? It's nothing." Oz winked. Kaid could always tell, even with the one eye scarred and unopening.
"You know what I mean, Oz." Kaid grabbed his shirt lightly then pulled him in for a kiss.
They weren't as late to the bar as you might have expected, but maybe not as punctual as Hans or Charlie would have liked. And it was hard for them not to get started… the patrons of the bar, I mean, when all the Dwarves at the bar were supplying the Daddies with drinks.
"Ozzie! Egg boy!" Charlie waved them over to the corner table. There were already a few empty glasses in front of him.
Oz shot Kaid an amused look. Egg boy?
Uhh, I'll explain later, came Kaid's telepathic response.
They slid into the booth, and Oz put an arm over Kaid's shoulders. "Welcome back to town, Daddies! I see you're being treated right already."
Raoul plopped two more glasses down on the table, sliding one in front of each of the Tieflings. Kaid eyeballed the size of the mug. What an absolute unit.
"Cheers, to your return!" Oz raised his glass, and the three Daddies toasted with the Cleric.
"Cheers, to your fine work on that monument," said Hans, starting the second toast and finishing his drink.
"Fuck, yeah, dude," Charlie nodded at Oz. "It's massive! How do you even make something that size?"
"Time and effort," Oz chuckled. "Plus, you've been gone a while, I had some free time on my hands." He squeezed Kaid's shoulder.
The smaller Tiefling took a big gulp of his drink, pointedly avoiding making a quippy comment for once in his goddamned life.
"What can we say, we've been pretty busy saving the world," the Rogue answered confidently. Raoul was already bringing over the next round of drinks. Kaid was not going to be able to keep up and keep his wits.
"No doubt! Tell me all about it! Kaid leaves out most of the juicy details in his letters. I suspect that he doesn't want me to know how much trouble he gets up to."
That was all it took to get Charlie and Hans into the tales of their battles, infiltrations, and espionage in the stretch since they'd left. It had been an eventful period, and the two strongest Daddies wasted no time getting into it, complete with gestures and re-enactments.
Charlie had undergone a complete transfusion, and transformation to a Blood Hunter. They'd faced off against hordes of the undead, against a Lich—not once, but twice! (Though, to be fair, the second time was because they botched the job the first time. Phylacteries are tricky business.)
They had gone on a side quest to the Faewild... maybe? That may have been a dream or a mass hallucination. But… then again they did have some souvenirs to prove it.
Dodging lightning through the desert, making deals with Djinn and dragons. Infiltrating the Vampire city stronghold. Collecting vials of exotic blood via Vampire B&Bs.
Oh wait, the vials… That struck a chord of fear into Kaid's heart, but at the moment he was too far gone to remember why.
They'd gone deep into the snowy mountains and made allies with a Storm Giant to take on a Dracolich, and then they'd gone deep into Kaid's mind, to the darkly Eldritch yet still glimmering halls of Glamathyst.
As their power grew exponentially, so did the dangers. At this point, everyone was quite drunk, and the whole bar was tuned in to the tale. Kaid figured that they were just about to become even more infamous here, as this epic was sure to make it out to husbands and wives and children in the Crystal City.
"Oz," Kaid whispered dizzily into Oz's ear, "we're legends."
Kaid remembered Oz kissed him then, but the next thing he knew distinctly was curling up in a cozy bed at home and drifting off to sleep. In between: darkness, stars.
"...d? Kaid?" Oz was lightly touching his shoulder. The Warlock grimaced slightly, head pounding.
"Are you alright? I had to carry you home yesterday." The Cleric sounded amused yet somewhat concerned.
"Ughh... remind me to stick to cocoa next time." Kaid rubbed his eyes, trying to ignore his churning stomach.
"We probably should have cut you off. I'm used to drinking with my work buddies and they go hard. Also, they're Dwarves."
"Nnnhmmm," was about all Kaid could manage.
"I'm going to make some coffee, come down when you feel up to it, okay? Or do I have to brew up some Remove Curse for this hangover?"
This time Kaid felt an otherworldly chuckle in his head, which made him even more queasy than before.
"Mm—be back—" is all he accomplished, before staggering off to the bathroom.
Kaid stared down at the coffee he was slowly sipping.
"You're looking a little less green," Oz remarked. "Feeling any better?"
"Mmm, a bit. Better than getting sliced six ways to Sunday or being blasted to unconsciousness by freezing Dracolich breath."
"Most people couldn't draw that comparison from personal experience."
"Ugh, sometimes I wish I couldn't either."
"And yet... when are you leaving?"
Kaid sighed, "There's still things I want to do... need to do, in spite of myself. It's scary, but the power... has appeal." He looked up seriously, and found Oz staring at him with his good eye. It wasn’t a judgmental gaze, but it was evaluating.
"You have good friends. You take good care of each other... even though it often seems like you're protecting each other from bears, or rather, dragons that you didn't have to poke."
"Oz, you're not wrong," Kaid caught himself smirking a little bit, then tried to look serious. "Look, uh, I have something I want to talk about... but I don't know if the time is right. Or if it's right for me to ask."
Kaid pushed down the wavering feeling in his gut, trying to blame it on the hangover rather than nerves.
"Oz. There's a big battle coming. That I know for sure. It's going to be dangerous, and I'm afraid. There's so many variables I can't account for, and I hate those risks. Right now the only things I'm certain of in my life are my team... and you. I don't want to be apart any longer than we have to."
The Warlock took a big gulp of coffee.
"I want you by my side."

One Month [Chapter 4]
Tumblr media
CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 2
CHAPTER 3
-- To Market
With Oz’s neatly draw map in hand, finding the two stalls was a breeze—not that there was much of a breeze, actually, being that they were underground—saving them a lot of time. Though, the harder thing was not getting distracted by the other stalls on the way.
Business first, then maybe let’s check out some antique stalls… maybe find some lunch… do they have anything other than mushrooms, I swear…
The first shop, run by Del Tadaban, had very clean-lined, functional pieces on display. They made some quick conversation with the owner, but looking between the Dhampir and the armor, it just didn’t seem to suit his style.
Moving onto the second shop, it seemed like a much better fit. The husband and wife who ran the place had a much more unique collection, and from the way they welcomed Kaid, it seemed like maybe Oz had mentioned him to them before…
Sundgar and Cali Fogsten looked over the materials that Kaid and Charlie pulled out of their bag. The raw mithril ore was turned over and examined by the clearly skilled smith, Cali.
“Aye this is fine stuff, where’d ye acquire it again?”
“Drow mine,” Kaid answers, keeping it simple.
“Ah,” Cali responds, glancing at her partne, “Got ya.”
Sundgar has a measuring tape out, and is asking Charlie about some design details while he’s at it. The Dwarf has to use a step stool to measure his shoulders.
“…I was thinking, something with a lot of inner pockets so I can keep vials of blood…”
“Aye, aye—ach—what’s that, lad? Blood?”
“Uhhh, just a hobby. I’m a… sanguine sommelier of sorts.”
“Ach, well we all have our interests,” the tailor gives a bit of a sideways glance at his wife before scrawling down the measurements in his notebook.
“This is a wee bit of a project, so it will take several days,” Cali looks over the details of both the armor and the clothing, “If ye can come back for a fitting in a day or two, Mister Bludstarved that would suit us fine.”
“Not a problem,” the Dhampir gives a nod and a wink.
“Give our regards to Ozzie, Kaid, tell the lad to come down and see us sometime! Aye I’m sure he’s right busy with his new duties, but still he should show his face here more often…” the Dwarven woman is already starting to get busy sketching on parchment, getting to work.
“Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Fogsten!” Kaid waved awkwardly as they walked back into the bustling market, wondering how much Oz had said about him and to who.
 --
Combing through the stalls took much of the rest of the afternoon. They’d found some interesting trinkets and curiosities but hadn’t bought much other than a couple of snacks. There was a promising-looking vendor selling kebabs, which they initially mistook for beef, but turned out to be just another very hearty variety of mushroom.
“Could go for a little more protein, you know,” Charlie said wistfully, biting into the grilled fungus.
“No kidding. It’s all fungus and games until someone gets a nutrient deficiency.” The Warlock quipped.
“Ugh…” Charlie groaned. No matter how long they’d all been together, they still weren’t numb to Kaid constantly torturing them with horrible jokes.
“Haha, sorry!” Though, to be honest, he wasn’t sorry about that at all.
 --
Softly glowing, the Crystal City was quieting down for the night. Kaid wandered back to the Temple district where Oz house was to be found. Without hesitation this time he used the key that had been given to him.
It was still pretty early in the evening, and Oz was in the kitchen. He was humming a tune to himself, seemingly lost in thought, or maybe just focused on washing the vegetables he was washing. Without really thinking about it, Kaid approached him from the left, giving him a hug.
Oz jumped more than Kaid expected, and it was then he realized that Oz hadn’t noticed him coming, that being his blind side and all. The Warlock retreated a pace, “Ah, my bad. I’m home! It’s just me!”
“—oh! Sorry, Kaid, I didn’t hear you come in,” Oz said with an easy smile after looking over at the smaller tiefling, “Did you have a good day?”
“Yes! Thanks to your recommendation I think we’re going to have Charlie in some really sweet threads. Your map was really easy to read, too… thanks again for that. Did you have a good day? Can I help you?” he gestured to the veggies.
“Day was fine! Sure! Just dice these, that’d be great. Here’s a knife—Did you end up going to Del or the Solgars?”
“We went with the Solgars—much more Charlie’s style,” Kaid responds, doing his best to chop up the vegetables Oz was handing to him. He hadn’t spent too much time in the kitchen.
“Thought so! Ah, just cut those a little more uniformly, they’ll cook up more evenly that way.”
“Uhh, like this?” Kaid says, getting a little nervous with Oz watching him.
“Almost! Here let me show you,” Oz adjusts Kaid’s grip on the knife, “If you position your hand like this, you’ll have more control.”
“Ah, thanks. I don’t touch... blades… very often. But it’s knife to have someone to show me what to do,” The cleric’s guiding hand is warm and confident on his own, and he finds himself getting a little flustered.
“That’s alright, I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it. He’s got a sharp wit, and he’s good with his hands!” Oz sounds amused as he returns to doing the rest of the prep for dinner.
Kaid busies himself with cutting carrots, trying to emulate what he was shown. As he gets into a groove, he starts to think about how easily he was able to sneak up on Oz earlier. With such threats looming in the world, such threats chasing after them, his limited vision seemed like such a liability. If only there was something I could do about it…
 --
“Ahhh, that was great,” Oz stretches and pats his stomach, “Plus, it took half the time, with your skillful assistance.”
“It was tasty, but I’m pretty sure it actually took half again as much time since you kept having to show me what to do,” Kaid scowls jokingly.
“Let’s just consider the extra time an investment into future efficiency,” Oz chuckles.
The future, huh…
They hadn’t really talked about that. Actually they hadn’t really talked about what this was. The Warlock could hardly believe his good fortune that he’d stumbled into this situation, with the ease and the comfort of it all. Kaid was hesitant to talk about what he was feeling, sometimes he felt like he was bottling his emotions so he didn’t have to examine them too carefully. The world felt too dangerous for this to be real or to last, and that felt like poison in his chest.
“…Kaid? Kaid?”
“Huh? Oh, sorry, I was daydreaming.”
“I was just asking if you’d like to make some Holy Water, since I was able to gather the components for the ritual. I’ll show you how to do it, if you’d like?”
“That would be amazing,” Kaid grabs Oz’s hand for a second, “Let me get my spellbook!”
When he returns the tall tiefling cleric is already setting up on a table in the living room, looking focused. “This will be interesting, I’ve never seen cleric spells performed by someone who isn’t a cleric. Does your…Patron bless the water?”
“Y’know, that’s a good question.” Kaid says, wondering himself. His Warlock Patron, the Great Old One Zathog, absolutely does not fall into a ‘holy’ category. More like terrible and unknowable.
“Alright, let’s get started.”
 --
Casting Eldritch Blast felt like pulling on a comfortable pair of shoes for Kaid at this point—if those shoes did massive amounts of Force damage, that is to say. The three beams of energy he could muster burst forth to strike at his enemies, with ease. Yet still, casting new spell, and casting rituals, he could feel the otherworldly energy crawling through his mind. It was something "other", something that wasn't him. You might describe such a feeling as invasive, and it was, but the marks it made also granted him power. Through repeated castings, who is to say if it becomes his or if he just becomes numb to the sensation.
When Oz cast the spell the atmosphere was clear, purified.
Kaid's casting was different. Sure, the end result was the same. The water was blessed, but the energy that remained in the room was electric, forceful, strange.
Earlier, the Cleric had been watching him fumble with a knife, and Kaid was self-conscious. Now, the Warlock was in his element, channelling powers that had been growing more and more familiar over time.
He'd had his eyes closed, concentrating, and when he opened them he found that Oz was looking back at him, with an expression he’d seen before. It was an expression of fascination that he was very much into.
The ceremony isn’t complicated, but it is time consuming. It takes an hour to bless each vial of holy water. Between the two castings of the spell it’s already rather late.
However, there is a tension and energy in the space. The lingering magic hangs in the room, and the two casters, although drained from channelling this energy, inexplicably find that they still have quite a lot of vitality left. Certainly commanding magic will make you feel powerful, and in this power there is confidence. Especially for Kaid, there’s a sense of self-assurance that he turns to boldness.
"I'm going to have to write this down tomorrow," Kaid said, breathless, not wanting to wait any longer.
Tentative touches gave way to more persistent movements, and it wasn't too long before things got heated as our most hesitant Warlock found some initiative.
 --
Kaid woke up slowly, rubbing his eyes. What time had they gone to bed... he wondered, as he rolled over and registered that he wasn't alone in the bed this morning.
Oz was lying, facing him now. His eyes were closed, looking peaceful. Kaid was resisting the urge to touch his face, then decided to give in. He lightly traced the scars on Oz's left eye. That he hadn't bothered to get an eye patch was somewhat surprising to the Warlock.
He would look handsome either way, so I suppose if the eye patch isn't useful... suddenly an idea came to him. That's it—!
At the same moment Oz's right eye fluttered open. "Mmm, g'morning."
"G-Good morning!" Kaid drew his hand back, suddenly self-conscious.
"You don't have to stop," Oz yawned through a smile, "Feels nice."
Kaid resumed what he had been doing, moving on to touch the scars on his collarbone, and across his chest, reminders of the skeletons that had been controlled by the Crystal Cult. They'd promised him protection and had failed miserably.
For all their adventures Kaid's wounds were few, the absence of scars was a sign of his caution, and luck.
Oz poked one of the stars on the Warlock's cheek, "I'm all scars and you're all stars."
He’d had one or two star marks on his skin since he was a child, but more had gradually appeared after he made his Pact with Zathog. After a while he lost count.
"Sorry we didn't protect you, back then." He was thinking about the damage the cleric had suffered.
"You're still apologizing for that?" Oz sighed, "I think you should give yourself more credit. I'm serious, Kaid, stop undervaluing the things you do."
Kaid struggled to find words to express what he wanted to say. He looked away, "Aren't you going to be late for work."
"Nope, I have today off, so I'm not letting you off the hook that easily this time." Oz sat up, then leaned over Kaid, not quite pinning him but definitely keeping him in place.
Kaid tried to pull the covers up over his face and just barely succeeded.
"Sure, your power is coming from somewhere else, I could feel it. But so does mine. You're shaping it, though, Kaid. It's your intentions. You can't just take responsibility for the things that go wrong. Take a little ownership of the things that go right, too."
"I'll take your advice under consideration," came a muffled reply from under the covers.
"Your humble nature is adorable, Kaid, but I like when you're more assertive too—like yesterday." The Warlock could practically hear the grin on the Cleric's face. He felt his own face grow hot but also couldn't help the sly smile that was growing.
He felt the weight shift off the bed as Oz got up, releasing him.
Kaid peeked out from behind his blanket barrier and definitely caught an eyeful of a very nice butt, which only increased the smile on his face.
Oz threw on a robe, catching Kaid's eye, "So, you've got me to yourself today. What shall we do?"

CHAPTER 2
-- Clear Waters
Kaid found himself back at the door of Oz’s cottage again, and this time his hesitation was more so, Should I knock first or just unlock the door myself? What exactly is the protocol here?
He was still looking at the key when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Ahh—!!” turning around with a start, Kaid was suddenly looking up at Oz. He was wearing more fancy robes than Kaid was used to seeing him in. Guess that went hand in hand with the promotion.
“It’s just me! Does it not work?” he gestured to the key, with a little smile.
“Oh, no no, I uh… I did lock up this morning. Worked like a charm!! I just wasn’t sure if you were home…”
“Now I am! Shall we?”
And so, Kaid turned the key and opened the door.
“I’m just going to change, I’ll be down in a minute. Still not used to these vestments.” Oz’s voice trailed back as he headed up the stairs.
Kaid walked into the kitchen, unpacking his notes from the day on the small table. He ran his finger along the lines, pausing at holy water again. Hadn’t he heard of a spell to make holy water? What was it… what was it… he thought back to some of the spellbooks he’d borrowed from Malfier many months ago.
Ah, that’s right! Ceremony, wasn’t it? A Cleric spell, but since Kaid would cast rituals, it wasn’t out of his reach. Those books he’d borrowed were out of his reach, however—
“Busy day?” Oz was leaning over his shoulder slightly, taking a peek at the notes.
Kaid started a little less than last time. “—oh, I was just in the Arcanum Library, doing some research. Do you know the spell Ceremony?” Kaid glanced up from the notes.
The cleric at him with a slightly raised eyebrow, “Ceremony? What for? I think you’re a little old for a coming of age ceremony, what else is there… do you have something to atone for? Or did you want to perform a wedd—“
“—Bless Water!” Kaid blurts out, red face reddening, “We’re heading back up to vampire central, and it would be extremely useful if we could make some Holy Water.”
“Aha!” He grins, moving over to the kitchen counter and getting out some cooking utensils, “So that’s all…. Sure, I do know the spell. I can lend you my book to copy to your spellbook.”
“D-Do you mind showing me as well? It’d really help me get used to preforming the ritual.”
“We can do that, absolutely. Let’s do a very important ritual right now, first of all.” He was wearing an apron—not his crafting apron, however—and holding up a pan.
“You mean dinner, huh?”
“Yup! Do you want mushrooms, mushrooms or… mushrooms?”
Kaid tried not to think of the mushroom folk from his nightmare, not that they were the same thing as regular ‘shrooms… “I’ll go with option 3: mushrooms.”
“A wise choice.”
--
“Y’know, I think that might be the best meal I’ve had in months.” Kaid was stacking the plates and tidying up.
“Not sure if that’s a good basis of comparison. Haven’t you been eating travel rations, hastily stuffed into a bag?” Oz chuckled.
“True, but my point still stands!” Kaid protested, laughing. “Ah! Speaking of hastily stuffed into a bag, do you know anyone in the city who can make armour? Charlie wanted to get some… half-plate made, I think?”
“Of course, let’s see, what kind of metal?”
“Uh... Mithril. We found some ore. Well, we took some ore,” Kaid admits, adding quickly, “In a Drow mine. Which we exploded after liberating the slaves.” He’s now extra focused on washing the remaining couple of dishes.
There’s a long pause. “You three liberated a whole mine full of slaves?”
“To be fair, it was us plus a Drunk Monk who was maybe a God, a giant goat, a wild boar, a rat and a bat. The goat did most of the work.”
“Wait, hold up. A God? A giant goat?”
“Um. Honestly, it’s very difficult to explain. It just kinda happened, somehow? It was a pretty bad situation, but something positive came out of it,” he sets down the last dish to drip dry, recalling the hundreds of vampire thralls they’d encountered in the mine and subsequently run away from.
Kaid’s shoulders tense up at the thought of their narrow escape, and the impossibly tall, pallid skinned, head vampire, growing closer with its insatiable hunger an—unexpectedly a pair of arms are wrapped gently around him, and despite the heavy feeling in Kaid’s stomach, it fluttered at the feeling of the taller cleric’s warm embrace. He could feel the tension in his body start to relax.
“Is that some healing magic, or do you just have powerful hugs?”
“Just a regular hug, I think.” It sounded like he was smiling.
Huh, feels pretty magical to me, Kaid thought to himself. Breaking the embrace just enough to turn around, and in turn wrap his own arms around Oz’s waist, facing him. “Ah, sorry, my hands are still wet.” He shifted his glance around, suddenly embarrassed, even though he was the one who had made this move. Despite having slept together, even being close like this made Kaid’s heart race.
“Don’t worry about your hands. We can talk about what happened in the Labyrinth later, when you feel comfortable.” Oz gazed down, despite Kaid’s averting gaze.
Kaid’s brow furrowed slightly, “I’m not sure I want to talk about it.” This was new. With his party they just went through things together, and dealt with it in the moment. Having to dredge up past actions and explain them, be judged by them?
Oz considered him for a minute, “Kaid, I haven’t known you that long, but I’ve never given you any reason not to trust me, have I?”
“That’s not what I’m saying,” suddenly his more reactive side coming out. “I’ve already given you plenty of reasons to doubt me, and I don’t need to add to the pile.”
“A confession isn’t what I’m asking for, just for you to know that I want to be someone who you can confide in when you’re worried.” He looks a little hurt then, adding to Kaid’s sense of guilt.
With a deep breath and a sigh, Kaid leans his forehead against his chest, “Right now, I’m still processing everything, but… I’ll tell you. I want you to know everything, but… it scares me. There’s things I’m still figuring out about myself.”
Soon, there’s a hand on the back of his head, fingers combing through his slightly-too long hair. It’s a comforting gesture, and there seems to be a sense of calm once again.
--
For the second morning in a row, Kaid awakens in an empty bed. This time, however, it’s darker outside and he can hear movement from the kitchen downstairs. Grabbing some clothes from his bag and tossing them on, he pulls the same Levitation trick on the bedcovers again. Handy in the wild, handy in uh, domestic situations…
Oz was just plating some food when Kaid walked into the kitchen.
“Let me guess… mushrooms?” the Warlock asked, smirking.
“Good morning! However did you know? Mushroom omelettes this time.”
“Oh, just my good old psychic powers, of course.” Kaid tapped the side of his head and pulled up a chair. He didn’t think he could flip an omelette to save his life, but these were practically perfect and smelled fantastic, though he wondered how many ways you could prepare mushrooms without getting tired of them…
“Must be feeling a bit less tired than yesterday, since you’re making an appearance at my breakfast table.” Oz sat down in the chair opposite, “Thought it wouldn’t be a good idea to keep you up too late while you’re settling in.” He gives Kaid one of those ‘winks’ with his good eye.
Kaid was just about to take a second bite and was glad he hadn’t when he coughed in reaction to this, “Ah—uh, y-you can keep me up any time. Delicious omelette by the way. Best I’ve had!”
It’s true, compared to last time, they were taking it pretty slow, which Kaid didn’t mind. Still pretty exhausted from their time in the Labyrinth, the careful embraces, tender kisses and not to mention someone to hold when he fell asleep had been more than enough. Looking up now across the table, however, it was easy to imagine more.
“Don’t let your food get cold,” Oz gestured, amused look on his face. He was just about done. “Oh! So I don’t forget; I wrote down the name of two armor smiths in the Marketplace. One is my friend Del Tadaban. He makes more serviceable pieces. Nothing flashy, but he does good work. Second is a husband and wife duo, Sundgar and Cali Fogsten—cousins through my adopted family. They make more elaborate, signature pieces. He does the leatherwork and sewing, and she does the metalwork. Can’t go wrong with either of those.”
Oz pulled a neatly folded note out of one of the pockets in his vestments and slid it across the table to Kaid, who was still eating. Ruffling his hair as he walked by to put his dish in the sink.
“I’ll do those! Thanks for breakfast—how did you know I was going to get up on time?”
“Call it a hunch. Have fun at the market!” Oz waves as he grabs his bag and heads out the door.
-- Get Equipped
Unfolding the parchment, Kaid smiled at seeing the neat pencil drawing of the market, with both of the armory locations noted in clear block print. He was headed to see if Charlie was around and available to go scope things out. It would be good to get that armor underway if they wanted to have everything prepared for when they were ready to leave.
When he was about to open up the door leading to the government residences he nearly collided into Hans. “Ah, shoot, sorry Hans.”
“Kaid. I didn’t need my Ring of Truesight to see you sneak into the Seat of the Triumvirate yesterday,” von Panzer looked down with a raised eyebrow.
“Sorry, guess I forgot to set my alarm.” Kaid shrugged, making a move to pass him… which was effortlessly blocked by the dexterous Rogue. “…hey.”
“We may be here for a while but we can’t let our guard down. Yesterday I was whipping the city guard into shape with Gordon. Today I’m going to brief Nostro about the Aboleth situation. Those pathetic sailors could use some extra training as well. Yelling, ‘We’re sailing!’ and ‘We’re helping!’ doesn’t pass for competency in my book.” The half-Elf cut a striking figure, with his defined cheekbones, well-muscled physique, and golden eyes.
Kaid tried not to roll his eyes, “That’s not really my wheelhouse so I’m so pleased you’ve taken charge. I did hit the books yesterday, I’ve got some leads on some good vampire tactics. Maybe let’s all meet tomorrow to discuss?”
“I approve. Later, Kaid.” He stepped deftly out of the way and strode off in the direction of the military quarter.
It wasn’t too difficult to find Charlie. Neither he nor Kaid are very tall, but they’re still easy to spot over the predominantly Dwarven citizens. “Hey! Charlie! I got some info from Oz about armories! Both of them are in the Market district—do you want to check them out today?”
“Sure, if you don’t have too much reading to do—nerd!” Charlie teased.
Kaid laughed. I mean he did spend all day in the library yesterday. “I think I can spare some time away from the books.”

Chapter 1 HERE
-- Sleep In
Kaid’s eyes opened, with a sense of disorientation. He was lying in a bed… a very comfortable bed… and not on the hard ground in a somewhat cramped Tiny Hut. Three adventurers and a God do take up a fair bit of space.
However, this bed was only occupied by himself at the moment… he sat up with a start. What time is it…? A warm glow was coming in the window, so he assumed it was the Underdark equivalent of daytime. It was easy to lose track down here, but less so in the Crystal City with its multi-coloured, faceted and glowing structure. It was bright enough now that Oz had probably left to perform his clerical duties.
Gazing about the room he took in the simple but sturdy furniture, topped with various crafts and knickknacks. It spoke of a comfortable life spent mostly in one place. Even as a child Kaid and his parents were always on the move. As travelling merchants their life wasn’t unstable, but it also was less than stationary. That being said, they caravan was cozy, and his father especially loved collecting souvenirs—much to his more practical mother’s chagrin. Something about the room stirred a feeling of nostalgia in Kaid.
Hopping out of bed, he Levitated the bedcovers with a flick of the hand, easily tidying up, yet with a seeping thought in the back of his mind—did using his powers make the psychic beacon coming from him stronger?
Ah… where’s my stuff… he wondered, then realizing that he’d left his pack behind in his rush to escape that meeting the night before.
Shit… he pulled on the rest of his clothes, recalling his paper-thin excuse from yesterday. Kaid anticipated at least some teasing about that.
Heading downstairs, and upon entering the kitchen he spotted something shiny on the table, along with a note. A key…? Written on the paper was a short message,
Had to leave for work, but didn’t want to wake you. Here’s a key to the place. You can add it to your collection. See you later!
Oz
With a smile creeping onto his face Kaid untied the rope of the necklace around his neck and added the freshly made house key.
 -- Dynamo, baby
Kaid’s walk back to the seat of the government was somewhat more leisurely than his dash to find Oz, but he was still in a bit of a hurry as he walked through the parks of the Sanctuary of Ermath—the temple district of the Crystal City. It was also a lot less frantic than the last time he was here. When the city was under attack by fanatical Crystal Cultists, things were understandably tenser.
Now he could see members of the predominantly Dwarven population out and about with their families. Playing, socializing, having picnics. It was, to put it simply, nice. He put a little more hustle in his step.
Back at the Seat of the Triumvirate, Hans and Charlie were already talking with the appropriate parties to make preparations for the coming plans when Kaid slunk into the chamber. Of course the hinges on the door creaked as he opened it, earning him an assortment of pointed and couple of perceptive looks before, mercifully, everyone returned to their discussions. Cringing, Kaid approached, trying to get a feel of the conversation before jumping in.
“Charlie, what’s the scoop?” he whispered to the Dhampir ranger.
“We just got Andre to hook us up with some more Dynamo Stones for when we leave. Plus,” he held out his hand, revealing two more detonator rings, “Now we can all set them off.”
“Damn, nice!” Kaid replied, taking one of the rings. “I’m pretty sure we can fit everything in the Handy Haversack…” he trailed off. “We took that with us to our room last night, don’t even worry about it. How was the library situation? Didn’t know it was open so late.” Charlie grinned, his one crystal fang shining as he gave Kaid a nudge in the arm.
“Uhh, yeah, learning never stops, I always say.” Kaid fumbled for a witty reply.
Hans was standing tall, arms folded across his chest, talking to Gordon, the head of the city guard and now one of the three Triumvirate members. “Aye, looking into these attacks on yonder Mushroom Folk is a wise idea, lad.” Gordon and Hans had had quite the buddy cop dynamic, and it seems they were slipping back into it with ease. “It may take, ach, two maybe three weeks ta comb that area, with the information ye provided. Will ye wait for the expedition ta come back or will ye lads be heading out?”
Kaid looked back and forth between Charlie and Hans, he knew they’d chomping at the bit to get on the road but… Please please let’s stay. For a little while. He had closed his eyes, and opening them again Kaid wasn’t entirely sure if he’d sent that out telepathically or not, from the way his teammates glanced back.
“It would be ideal to have that information before we resurface,” Hans declared, turning back to Gordon. The stout Dwarf reached up to clap the much taller half-elf Rogue on the back. Kaid’s heart did a flip flop with relief, and excitement, Two or three weeks!
“T’will be advantageous to have ye around again, von Panzer! The lads of the guard could do with a little training, can’t have us gettin’ lax just ‘cause you dealt with the previous threat. Best be on our toes.”
“Training, huh? I feel like I’m just about to break through to my next level of potential,” Hans von Panzer had a familiar glint in his eye, “Let’s get to it.” That red cape billowed impressively as he and Gordon strolled off, the Dwarf struggling just a little to match his stride.
 -- Armor for Charlie
“Here’s your stuff, Kaid,” Charlie easily lifted the enchanted bag, handing it to the tiefling, “Don’t worry, we didn’t peek.” Kaid had to laugh at that, since it was mostly shared items; the Dynamo Stones, some gems they’d picked up, some chunks of mithril ore, their dwindling rations, various books. “That’s fine, I think you know most of my inventory already.”
“Speaking of, did you get some new bling?” Charlie nodded towards the freshly acquired key around his neck.
Shit. “Uh, yeah…” he wondered if there was any point in keeping up this pretence, after all he was only being evasive because he was shy.
“So, was thinking of going to the archery range, but I should totally look into getting that mithril armor made while we’re here. Been in touch with your Forge Cleric…” he coughed, “boyfriend?”
Kaid covered his face for a minute. Scratch that. There was absolutely no point in keeping up the pretence, “Yeah, I was there last night… I don’t think Oz makes armor, but he would definitely know someone who does. Can I get back to you with a recommendation?”
Charlie beamed—though it’s hard to picture a Dhampir beaming, Charlie is an expert—clapping Kaid on the shoulder, “Yeah, buddy! I’m gonna hit the archery range, then. Can’t let these arms get rusty!” he made his signature pose before walking off with a wave over his shoulder at Kaid.
 -- The Library, actually
The Warlock didn’t have any books to return, but he did truly need to go to the Library. That at least had only been partially a lie. There were two pressing issues. First of all, they were slated to return from the Underdark to the topside of Cymmeria, which they’d left because it was infested with vampires. Thus, they needed as much information on the creatures as possible.
Secondly, there was the lingering prophecy that had been following him around—literally—most likely connected to the shadowy figures, and certainly connected to the Mind Flayers.
MADNESS WILL FOLLOW YOU WHEREVER YOU GO
YOUR SALVATION LIES IN THE UNBREAKABLE SPIRE
A comforting thought. Earlier communication with Kaid’s mentor, the Mage named Malfier, had revealed some details. Mainly that this “Unbreakable Spire”—possibly named The Temple of Cryx—was in the Underdark, but it was beyond The Abyss. Also a Shadow Dragon was taking up residence there. Oh, not to mention, The Abyss is Mind Flayer City. Of course.
With these two issues in his periphery, he found himself at the city’s Library. An impressive structure, found in The Arcanum, hub of magical research and arcane experimentation. There was also a library in The Temple district, but he figured with the sought after topics, The Arcanum was his best bet.
Kaid walked up to the front desk and leaned on the counter, whispering “Do I need to fill out a form to get a library card?”
An older Dwarven woman, red hair streaked with grey, peered up at him through thick glasses, “My, don’t ye look familiar? Aren’t ye one of the heroes in that statue in the park?”
Not really used to such notoriety, Kaid was a little startled but mostly pleased, “Uh, yeah! That’s me, Kaid Valvenom.”
“Right’ye are! Mr. Valvenom. Well don’t you be frettin’ about the library card, I don’t s’ppose yer settling down here? I’ve known a few adventurers in my time. Not much for settlin’ down.” She gets a misty look in her eye, and before Kaid can answer she starts up, “Well, look at me, talkin’ yer ear off. If ye need any help just give me a holler, Miss Yergi to ya. Jus’ don’t make me track ye down for late fees.”
“Just Kaid is fine—actually I have two topics I’m interested in, if you could help me out…”
It didn’t take Miss Yergi too long to locate some heavy tomes, most of which she carried to a little reading nook, carved out of the crystal. It had a small light, and some cushions. Kaid figured he would make a dent in some reading here, save himself some effort in carrying them back to... Oz’s. Lifting wasn’t his forte, and using Telekenesis was kind of overkill.  Sinking into the cushions he tucked into the first book, “The Vampire, In Lore and Legend”.
Losing track of the time, Kaid’s notebook became filled with information about the various weaknesses and strengths of their foes above. Radiant damage, stakes, resting places, Holy water… The Temple of Cryx proved to be more elusive, but there was one text that seemed like it had relevant information, so that’s the one he packed up for further reading when Miss Yergi gently informed him that the library was closing for the night.
Not a 24 hour establishment after all; noted.
It was at that point that Kaid realized he had no idea what time it was, as well as no idea when Oz actually finished up with his Cleric work for the day. Better get a move on.
“I’ll bring this back soon!” he mentioned to the kindly librarian in a hushed tone, before heading off into the softly glowing city.

One Month [Chapter 1] - Kaid x Oz
For quick character references, click here.
Tumblr media
One month.
One month of near-normalcy was more than Kaid would have hoped for.
A realist at best and a pessimist at worst. Ever since that portent dream—sorry, nightmare—of the slaughter of the Mushroom Folk, he'd been both anticipating and dreading the return to the Crystal City. Kaid figured that these shadowy figures were following them in a linear fashion, and taking out their allies on their way to their prey. Maybe that wasn't the case, and really only added to his confusion.
Tumblr media
YOU'RE WELCOME, came the message from his patron, Zathog, following this vision. Kaid was never quite sure if his benefactor was helping him or tormenting him. Probably both. That wasn't worth worrying about at this point, he was already in too deep. What had worried him was the potential threat on the life of someone he lo—cared about. Oz. That tall and handsome Tiefling Forge Cleric. Ever since he caught the sight of him, working away in the Sanctuary of Ermath, Kaid had a hard time getting him off his mind. Was it the sweet smile, or the kind eyes, or the hardworking hands... Snap out of it, Kaid! The pressing issue is that every moment they're apart the idea that Oz could be dead solidifies.
The thought that he had put Oz in danger kept him up at night. The Daddies plan: "Grand Eagle Escape from the Drow Labyrinth" had somehow been successful. Kaid had had his doubts—but when doesn't he? However, the combination of Hans' sharp mind, Charlie's expert animal handing and ranger abilities and some eh, minor Warlock magic... goddamn they pulled it off.
There were some close calls while gliding through the webbed tunnels of the Spider Queen's lair, but when they finally soared over the Stillwater Sea, and laid their eyes on the softly glowing Underdark Crystal City once again, to Kaid it felt like coming home.
"We should see the Triumvirate as soon as possible and relay the information about these shadowy figures that attacked the Mushroom Folk," Hans announced, in his commanding tone, "Plus, I'd like to get my hands on some more Dynamo Stones." There was a devious look in his eye as he glanced over. Certainly the explosives had come in handy during some tight spots recently, so Kaid agreed to that readily.
"We should also get a copy of the Labyrinth map and the details about the Aboleths to the military and navy," Kaid couldn't stop himself from mentioning, though that wasn't quite what he'd like to do as soon as they touched down.
"Yo, and with this Mithril Ore we got from the mine, I can replace this scale mail with some sweet half-plate!" Charlie grinned, his fangs glinting. It felt like his luck was changing for the better. Kaid hoped it was.
 -- The Heroes’ Return
The two giant eagles made an impressive display, landing in the port. As the Anti-Crystal Fucker Alliance, The Daddies saved the entire city from the villainous actions of the Crystal Cultists and there was hardly a person in town who didn't recognize their faces. After all, there is a statue of them in one of the parks.
"To the Seat of the Triumvirate!" Hans pointed and made a graceful leap from his mount, landing somehow silently as his cape billowed. Kaid didn't always agree with him but damn did he have swag. Some of the bystanders clapped.
Charlie leaped down adeptly, and Kaid made his own awkward descent. Guess I could have levitated, huh. Oh well... He brushed himself off as Charlie dispelled the beasts back to the ethereal plane.
"C'mon Kaid! I think Hans is like halfway there already." They squinted off into the distance, through the dispersing crowd.
 -- The Triumvirate
Kaid caught bits of the conversation between the Triumvirate members and the other two Daddies, piping in occasionally so he didn't seem rude. His mind was elsewhere.
How quickly can I get out of here, find an acolyte, someone, who can tell me that the Shepherd of Ermath, Oz, is alright. I don't think I can bring it up here without drawing a lot of attention to myself... Kaid fidgeted, his chest tight. He'd maybe spaced out for 15 minutes while Hans and Charlie were talking to the three city officials, Gordon, Andre and Merrin.
All of a sudden it looked like the political dealings were drawing to a close. "...it's rather late, we'll have the scouting crew go out to the Mushroom Kingdom soon. Now, we'll show you boys to your shared quarters here—"
Kaid jumped up, "Oh, I... have an overdue library book. Better go uhh... return that! Bye!" He left them with their mouths agape. That was a terrible excuse, fuck. Whatever, Charlie and Hans knew what was up, he wagered. He was already gone and racing to the temple district. After spending a month here previously, investigating and combing the city for clues while they were on the case, he knew it like the back of his hand.
On the way he passed a Dwarf, who appeared to be a priestess, in the park. "T-The Shepherd of Ermath! Ozric." He asked, breathlessly, "Where is he??"
She looked affronted, "I expect he's at his residence at this hour, young man."
"—Really?? Thank you!" He suddenly felt like the weight that had been crushing him for the past several weeks had lifted. Oz was still safe. After thanking the dwarven woman he set an even faster pace.
Before he knew it he was running up to Oz's small cottage. It looked the same as when he left, what seemed like an age ago. Kaid ran up to the door and it was there he hesitated, his fist poised to knock. With a jolt, a combination of embarrassment and nervousness flooded his mind, causing him to flush, his already red face darkening. Last time things had happened in a rush. Between the Cultist investigation, the Crystal skeleton attack that had taken the sight from Oz's left eye and had nearly taken his life, and the knowledge that Kaid couldn't stay forever... things had moved pretty quickly.
He remembered asking to stay here before, awkwardly, which Oz welcomed with a kind smile. He remembered trying to make the first move, but lacking the courage and experience to follow through. But, he also remembered Oz reading him like a book and picking up exactly where he'd trailed off. Then, after that...
Kaid covered his face with the hand that wasn't hovering at the door, not sure if he was more trying to hide the blush or his dorky grin.
Before he could overthink it another second, he knocked abruptly.
He could hear some movement inside, and the muffled sounds of maybe tools being set down on the table and then—the door opened suddenly, and the person who had been on his mind constantly was there before his eyes. Kaid then realized he was still covering his mouth.
"Kaid! I didn't think you'd be back so soon, from what you wrote in your letter... are you alright?" A warm smile which crossed into a look of concern played on Oz's face. His scarred left eye still uncovered. He was wearing his gloves and apron and had clearly been in the middle of some crafting project.
"Oz, I..." Kaid dropped the hand covering his face, awkward grin turning into a genuinely happy smile. "Seeing you now, I'm absolutely more than alright."
Ozric can't help but mirror the expression, first clapping Kaid on the shoulders and then pulling him in for a close hug. "Don't just stand there, come inside! I'm just working on crafting two replacement spoons from a silverware set..."
Oz's strong arm still around him, he let himself be lead into the cozy home that he remembered fondly. "Is it an heirloom set? Do you mind if I watch?" He loved to see him at his forge work.
"Don't mind at all." Oz closed the door behind them with a flick of his tail. That feeling of returning somewhere safe that had washed over Kaid when they saw the Crystal City earlier, returned then. Right now, this was home.
"Take a seat! Now; I know it's pretty late but I want to finish this up tonight. Therelda was gifted this by her late husband and has been beside herself about the missing spoons. With my new duties as the Shepherd of Ermath it's been harder to make time for these projects, but I so care for them." Kaid's already curled up on the sofa, as Oz gets to work. His reference spoons on the table, he deftly shapes the liquid metal in the air. Concentrating on his work, he gets the most adorable focused expression on his face, Kaid can't help but notice, gazing intently as the tall Forge Cleric makes these dainty spoons.
Oz looks up for a second, catching Kaid watching him. Kaid darts his eyes away, "I really admire uh, your work. That you're able to make something is amazing to me... recently I feel like all I can do is destroy things and hurt people." He looks back as Oz is once again focused and working on the second spoon.
"Kaid, we all have different strengths. You and your team helped save so many people in the Crystal City through your actions. We can't all make silverware." He chuckles, "What matters is that you're doing good."
The Warlock looks uncomfortable, remembering some of the less savoury things they've had to do to get by and survive in the Underdark, and the people who have unintentionally gotten hurt or killed maybe because of contact with him. "Oz, listen... I need to talk to you about something. When you're done."
The second silver spoon sparkles in the lamplight as Ozric compares it to the antique. Not a detail out of place. God, his focused face really grabbed Kaid's attention. That red eye looked over at Kaid again, and this time he didn't look away. "You seem troubled, I'm listening." He says kindly, as he puts the silverware back in its case, ready for Therelda to pick up tomorrow.
The words come out in a rush, despite Kaid's attempts to rehearse what he's been wanting to say during those sleepless nights in the Labyrinth. He stares down at his palms in his lap, trying desperately to focus on something.
"This is hard for me to talk about, but in a dream I had a vision that shadowy figures were chasing us. They were killing people we'd come into contact with... of course I've been worried for all of our friends and allies but... you were the first person I thought of. My dreams aren't just normal dreams, and this nightmare was explicitly a warning."
People who come into contact with us, with me, are in danger. I don't know if it's some sort of psychic residue. God, I feel so guilty, and incredibly irresponsible getting you involved—" he'd gotten so caught up in this confession that he hadn't registered Oz taking a seat down next to him.
"I'm not a brave person. Since I've been on the road, there have been plenty of things that have made me want to run, and move on. Leaving here was the first time that I've really felt like, I want to stay." Kaid looks up at now, turning to face Oz, though he has a hard time looking him in the eye and instead stares down at those hands that have helped so many. "At the same time, that makes me feel selfish. I understand if you want me to go, hearing all that. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
"Kaid, your letter said you didn't regret what happened between us." Oz puts a hand on his chin, gently tilting his head so Kaid looks him in the eye, "I don't regret it either. We can't unmeet now, and I wouldn't change it if we could. I think I'm pretty well caught up in this, psychic residue, you said?" He chuckles.
Kaid flushes again, seemingly about to sputter a protest when Oz leans in for a kiss. All the tension that had been building up in Kaid seems to melt away in that moment and he leans into the kiss.
They break away after an intense moment. "Oz, are you sure about this?" Kaid asks earnestly, though you can see the answer he wants in his eyes.
"I'm sure. Are you, Kaid? Clearly this isn't a simple situation but..." he tucks back a strand of hair behind Kaid's ear, "...I'm patient, and I believe you can conquer those demons. Or whatever they may be."
"M-Mindflayers, probably," Kaid blurts out, still a bit shaken from this strange emotional roller coaster he's been riding.
"...Mindflayers, huh?" He pauses for a moment, for what seems like an eternity to Kaid. "Well, a little more complicated than I thought but my position stands. But right now my position would like to be horizontal since it's very late and I have a lot of shepherding to do tomorrow." Oz stretches, yawning.
"Right!! I should be going back to our quarters—" Kaid makes an attempt to jump up and leave, but Oz grabs him gingerly by the tail.
"I didn't mean I wanted you to leave. I missed you, and don't want to let you out of my sight yet." Oz pointedly blinks his good eye then chuckles. "Ah, that was a wink. Still getting used to this. You’re not leaving the city in a hurry, are you?”
Kaid shook his head quickly, “There’s some things to take care of, so I think we’ll be here for a bit.”
“I’m glad to hear it. Let's go upstairs, Kaid." He stands up, and with a kiss on the head, the relieved yet weary pair head up and retire for the night.
