“The keeping of bees is like the direction of sunbeams.” — Henry David Thoreau  this photo was lowkey inspired by an article i read the other day about the american honey bee being at risk of extinction in canada ☹️ taken from various sources, here are some things you can do to help: 1. pass on the pesticides/herbicides and swap for natural alternatives 2. try to support local farmers/sustainable agriculture when you can (obviously this is not accessible to everyone) 3. fill ur garden w/ some bee friendly plants 4. educate yourself and stay informed abt groups that advocate for more regulations and conservation plans

Two icons were lost this week to suicide, but their contributions to the world will never be forgotten. Kate Spade made the fashionably unattainable attainable and @anthonybourdain’s exploration of culture through food opened our eyes to the world. Both will be sorely missed.
Remember, no matter what you are going through, you don’t have to go through it alone. There are resources available to help you.

Mr. Anderson thinks that everything inside of him is worthless and embarrassing. Isn’t that right, Todd? Isn’t that your worst fear? Well, I think you’re wrong. I think you have something inside of you that is worth a great deal. “I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world.”

ARISTOTLE & DANTE REVIEW
this book is honestly one of my fave books in any genre. the characters are just so real. and the writing style is simple but v v thoughtful. the representation and discussions about race and ptsd and sexuality are genuine and it never feels like one of those books that‘s trying too hard to teach you a lesson, but rather a book that‘s telling a story you learn from. ari and dante are both such fleshed out individually and together they‘re just. so good. so healthy. this book reminds me of a feeling. and it‘s definitely something that stays. go! read! it!

emergency contact [mary h.k choi]  ⭐⭐
general thoughts
tbh super mixed feelings about this book. i liked the writing style (for the most part) ngl, it came across as witty and entertaining and there were loads of pop culture references which i personally love. that being said, there were certain jokes that i felt were straight up offensive (”depression suited him” um. no.) or just generally cringe-y (re: ”smitten mitten kittens”) or unnecessary. it was slow burn and slow paced and character driven which i do enjoy, buuut if you’re looking for lots of action or even plot (it’s mostly just them going through life) i wouldn’t recommend.
characters
this is mainly why i gave it a 2/2.5ish stars. penny (MC) was so---for lack of better word---mean. to her mom, to jude, to pretty much everyone that didn’t think like her. and yeah, this was addressed (super super) briefly at the end, but reading her judge everyone got annoying after like, the first chapter. she literally calls her mom stupid and basically slut-shames her in the first chapter i’m?? sam (other MC) was super underwhelming to me. i didn’t like some comments he made, but i honestly just could not care about him. penny annoyed me but sam made me feel next to nothing, so. penny & sam go through a lot which explains their equally cynical outlooks on life, but i just don’t wanna read 400 pages of everything sucks! i’m so hipster and different! ya feel? idk.
conclusion
there were lots of things i didn’t like about this. obviously, lol. but that being said, i think mary h.k choi is a good writer and this was (in terms of the writing) not bad as a debut. however, characters are a make or break for me---and when i can’t stand either MC that’s kind of a big thing.

zoology, astronomy, and psychology
zoology: the animal you’d be if you weren’t human
not to b dramatic but i would literally channel my girl jean grey and be fricken phoenix so i could like, rise from the ashes and also fly away from my responsibilities.
astronomy: the biggest dream/aspiration you have
the most consistent dream i’ve had since childhood is to be a published author/novelist! writing books for a living and travelling is the Dream once i get around to finishing something.
psychology: your biggest flaw and how it makes you better
hmm i’d say that i’m not v good at being forthcoming abt my feelings; i think i have a tendency to hold back unless i’m rllyrlly comfortable w the person/am in the mood. but i do think this makes me a rlly good listener? and i’d like to think i’m an observant person.
thanks sm for sending these! and making me not look like a loser :’)
