Just One Bite
Rachel Zegler as Snow White from Disney’s upcoming live action film.
I finished this about a year ago and just never got around to posting it.
I’m hoping to keep more up to date with my blog and post more regularly on here. This was drawn on Procreate.

Dorothy’s magical shoes from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum. Originally silver in the book, the shoes were made ruby in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. I drew these in silver on Procreate but had to do a ruby version. I made a duplicate layer and just dropped red onto the shoes to make them ruby but unfortunately lots of the smaller details became lost and so in this case I think the silver versions work better.

I’ve been working on some posters for the upcoming Neath Arts Festival which has a call for Wizard of Oz themed art. I’ve gotten to draw a lot of iconic characters which has been really fun but also daunting as everyone has an image of them already in their minds. I wanted to keep Dorothy as a simple farm girl and didn’t stray too far from her well known look. I did intend for her to be a bit younger but this is how she ended up looking. Also to match the original book I give her sliver slippers rather than the more famous ruby slippers from a the Wizard of Oz film.

Folktale Week Day 7 - Dance
“Meanwhile, nearby, slippers made of iron were heated over to the wicked queen with tongs, and placed at her feet. Then she was made to walk in those red hot shoes, and to dance in them. And she did so until she fell to the ground, dead.”
The original ending to Snow White is rather gruesome with the Evil Queen being forced to dance in red hot iron shoes to pay for her wickedness.  From Folktale Week 2020

“The jolt jostled the piece of poisoned apple loose from Snow White’s throat. Not long after, she opened her eyes, lifter the coffin lid, and sat up, alive again”

“Snow White craved the perfect looking apple, and as she watched the farmer’s wife taste it, she could no longer resist. She held out her hand and took the poisoned half.”
Continuing with my Snow White themed Folktale Week, this was for the prompt 'Death'

“She withdrew and shut herself inside a secret, hidden room, where she made a very, very poisonous apple” The prompt for this Folktale Week day was 'Solstice'. I couldn’t really think of what to draw for solstice so I decided to have the wicked queen create her apple during a solstice so I could fit it into my theme.

“And so she stayed on with them and kept their home in order. In the mornings they left for the mountains in search of ore and gold, and when they returned in the evenings their supper had to be ready"
From Folktale Week 2020, the prompt was 'Harvest'

“Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”
The Evil Queen’s ritual of asking her magic mirror who is the fairest in the land. This is another piece from Folktale Week in 2020, the prompt was 'ritual'.

“If only I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as dark as the wood of the window frame” This is from folktale week in 2020. I decided to focus on one story for the week and chose Snow White, one of my favourites. The first prompt was 'Birth' and I illustrated Snow White's birth mother at the beginning of the story.

Folktale Week Day 5 - Costume
I chose to illustrate ‘Donkeyskin’ by Charles Perrault, a dark story which has some similarities to various Cinderella stories. There’s a famous French film based on the story which I have not seen yet but will definitely have to at some point!
I forgot to finish uploading all my illustrations for last years folktale week so I'm doing it now.

Here's all the mermaids that I drew and painted last month for mermay. They're all based on Ariel and her sisters from the new live action 'The Little Mermaid' by Disney. I absolutely loved the new live action film, I can't wait to see it again and these characters were a lot of fun to draw.
