Life Lesson #42 ~ Money Makes You Evil

You probably don't want to hear this, but your closest friend could actually turn out to be your worst enemy. You walk along with a friend, you see £20 on the ground and pick it up, and your friend wants half of it because you 'found it together'. Or if you ever became rich, your friends would ask money from you, saying that "you can spare it", and would start getting very pressuring. I had a friend who I considered to be one of my best friends since I was 18. One day she started asking to borrow money. Just little bits here and there - £20 for a meal out, £50 for a dentist bill, etc. Stupidly I agreed to it. The lend money came up to £180. But when I asked for her to pay back, she would come up with a tonne of excuses, saying that her bank transfer wasn't working, or that she was away on holiday, or would just 'forget'. Today I am still down £180 and have since realised she has no tension of paying it back. I had another friend who I was planning on going on a hotel trip with. He was short on funds and could only pay for himself, so he asked me to pay for the both of us, and then he would pay me back afterwards. I was uncomfortable with this, and I asked for his money first, then I would pay for the both of us. He started to get very pressuring. "You clearly don't trust me." "Why are you being a d#$k about it?" "I'm not going to rob you Steve, Jesus." Considerate huh? I have been accused of having trust issues. But in all honesty... Can you blame me? These are my closest friends who show a new side when money is involved, thus leading to the end of the friendship. You want more examples?... A housemate who would charge me 'interest' if I borrowed £10 from him. Another friend who thinks up excuses so he doesn't have to pay for printer ink that I bought for him. And ex-flatmate who failed to see the maths in paying for HALF of all the bills (he was convinced that only paying a quarter was enough). Can you blame me for not trusting people straight away? It is every man's dream to become rich. But I am absolutely petrified of the idea of my friends asking me for money and being pressuring about it. That's why I think it's important to put all your friends through a test. I know it's not very 'friend' like, but if you explain why you tested them afterwards, and if they are your true friend, they will understand. A good money test will filter out the 'secretly backstabbing' friends, and will leave you with that small number of real friends. A test where you 'offer' them lots of money just cos "they're awesome" and see how they act. Or just spoil them with something they clearly don't deserve, like when they do something wrong, you would give them a gift. If they're a decent friend, they will question why they are being rewarded for being horrible and reject it. And the other guys will simply take it without question. These aren't solid proof tests, but it's a start. I'm not saying you should mistrust all your friends, I'm just passing on my past experience and encouraging you to be careful. You never know what someone is really like until money is involved.

I FOUND MY CREATIVE SPARK AGAIN!!!

So I decided to start using tumblr as it was originally designed for... Blogging! I guess I had in mind that this was a place full of pressure to reblog from others and create stunning artwork that people love. Well, it is, but it's also for writing stuff that's on your mind too! Hi, I'm Steve, aka 'Slightly Steve'. I make videos on YouTube, with a main channel for skits, and a second channel for vlogs. Until recently I had been feeling very de-motivated. I have a full time job, which takes up a huge percentage of my week, and I've been involved in so many projects, that it's left very little room for YouTube. I'm finding myself more capable of saying 'no' to things that I simply don't have the time for, and able to use my free time to rest, which makes me feel better. After resting a lot, I find my brain is more active and I get inspiration much easier. Whilst enjoying an evening in with my good friend Darren, we started talking about silly things and absurd situations, and I began laughing. I laughed the hardest I had done for a while. I was inspired to do what I love doing once more - to make a video. My creative spark had returned!! We thought about how the idea would work on video and I'm pleased to say we plan on filming it this Saturday. What have I learned? Basically, it's great to get involved in things and do as much as you can, in fact I recommend it. But you have to know where to stop. Tiredness = no progress, and when you rest you are more capable of finding inspiration WHEN you do stuff. (Don't just rest all the time and expect it to come to you).
