How Magic Works
Tumblr media
These are just some of many different theories about how spells work. For anybody who really enjoys “magical theory” like I do or is looking for validation that there’s something to all these weird spells! None of these serve to discredit magic, but rather add a deeper level of understanding to it. The success of a spell could be credited to more than one of these, or something else entirely!
Law of Attraction. Basically, the idea that you attract what you focus on. A popular example is focusing on the color red, and seeing how much red is around you that you didn’t notice before. This is most effective for spells involving personal matters and success, by formally opening your eyes to details and opportunities you may have missed otherwise.
The Placebo Effect. It’s a proven fact that our bodies can heal ourselves merely by belief that what we’re doing helps! This can extend beyond health spells to things like confidence, performance ability, and other things that aim at personal improvement. The placebo effect may be all that spell needs to be successful ( and it wouldn’t have happened without the spell!)
Direct cause/effect. Something about the spell and the way it was cast directly affects the outcome. Example: a sigil designed for protection, when looked at, serves as a constant visual reminder that you are protected, subconsciously strengthening your wards.
Science/chemistry. This is most true for kitchen witchery and herbalism. Chamomile, lavender, and other herbs aren’t corresponded with calmness and sleep for nothing… they’re made up of chemicals that have been scientifically proven to calm the nerves and aid in sleep!
Quantum physics. There’s a phrase called “Quantum Woo,” where people use quantum physics (often incorrectly) to explain any type of magical thinking or practice. While the ultimate theory behind quantum physics was recently disproven, the discoveries made through research still hold true. Basically, we know particles behave differently when observed, and our energies can effect this. We just don’t know why that is. This is the baseline behind a lot of energy work.
Divine string pulling. Ask and ye shall receive. This is where we depart from the physical to the spiritual side of magic. Many people do magic by appealing to divine forces, Mother Earth, God(s), the Universe, whatever you want to call it. This could be with an offering, a ceremony, or even just bedside prayer. The divine force hears the request, and grants it by affecting change and “pulling strings” to cause the desired outcome.
Spiritual string pulling. Very similar to the previous point, but with entities that are not worshipped or seen as divine. Many believe that spirits can still affect change “behind the scenes.” A spirit worker may make a deal with a spirit for luck or protection, or someone may ask their ancestors for good fortune and health.
Personal string pulling. Instead of asking an outside entity, this is the idea that we, as the practitioner, pull the strings. This is most seen through the “cone of energy” method of casting, where we raise a lot of concentrated energy and intent in a space, then release it all at once to do its thing. You also see it with sympathetic magic, where by doing something to a poppet, we actively affect that change on the target. No middle man included.

Hi! You mentioned doing planetary rituals a while ago and I was looking forward to it and I know you've made several posts about how you haven't been able to be as active because of school so I was just wondering if that was a thing you were still planning?
hello! i am still planning to do those, some of them are not rituals. i think i have drafts for mercurian and saturnian spells but they are definitely not done. i apologize that i haven't been able to get to those! i do plan to have at least one up by the end of the month.

Witch Tips for City Witches
City Witch Tips for all of my fellow witches stuck in apartments, dorms or other city areas.
If you can’t burn incense you can make your own sprayable incense by mixing alcohol (usually vodka or rubbing) with essential oils and a bit of oil, spray in the air to act like incense
If you are unable to go outside for whatever reason to get rain water (in my case just no where to collect it safely), fill a jar or glass with regular water and keep it near a cracked window to charge it with the wind, sound and scent of the rain outside. Same goes for storm water
Trapped in city and unable to get ocean water? Sea salt mixed with rain/storm water can be an excellent substitute
To continue on with water substitutes, if you can’t collect snow crushed ice from your fridge will suffice
Low key warding/protection you can use: spray moon water, salt water or sprayable incense about your apartment or dorm, place sigils under doormats, furniture, inside cupboards, etc; place crystals about hidden or out in the open, sweep and dust out the door or towards windows
If you need melted wax to seal a jar or for any other magical purpose, but can’t burn candles, by a wax melter and melt that wax and imagine the light from the burner acting like a flame (plus they are rather cheap, I got mine for 25 bucks)
Need stars in your craft but too much light pollution? Glow in the dark stars on your ceiling or wall can work just as well for visualization. Print out pictures of your favorite constellations or planets and place them up on your walls or on your altar. Live video feed of the night sky can also be easily found on the internet
Bath magic is amazing for low-key ‘in the woods’ witches. Use teas, milk, oils, herbs, bath bombs, bubble baths, salts, etc that relate to your intent. It is also a good place to meditate if you have roommates or family around that would disturb you otherwise
If you do for whatever reason need to burn a candle, birthday candles are small, melt fast, and don’t create a lot of smoke or smokey scent
Sigils are another great low-key form of magic. To boost them up, use color magic related to the color you draw them in, write them using quills made of feathers related to your intent, use colored paper, rub a drop of essential oil on them, charge them with crystals or in your windowsill
You don’t have to burn sigils to activate them, which is hardly an option when you are in a dorm or apartment. Other options are: Shredding them, erasing them, soaking them in a bath or shower, using body heat or your own pulse, etc
Miss having the outdoors and plants around? Windowsill gardens can really help. Small plants you can consider keeping in your windowsill or counter-tops: succulents, cacti, bamboo, lemongrass, basic, rosemary, mint, rosemary, mosses, aloe, snake plant, pothos (and other vines), carrots, beets, shallots, lettuce, spinach, garlic, chives, parsley, oregano, thyme, and marigold
Open your window to let the wind and air from outside to help energize you and clear out negative energies inside
Fun places to put sigils: under furniture, carved into soap, onto shampoo/conditioner bottles, on your make up, inside phone cases, in shoes, under bandages, sewn into pillow cases and blankets, behind pictures in frames, underside of nail polish, carved into wax squares for your wax melter, keys and keychains, behind mirrors or in medicine cabinets, on bookmarks, on or in binders and pencil cases, on medicine bottles, and water bottles/travel mugs
Easy to make and dispose of poppets: carrot sticks (one of my personal favorites), apples or other fruit, clothe, paper, popsicle sticks, paper towels/napkins, toilet paper rolls, eggs, celery stocks, and cotton balls
The internet is an amazing thing. Need some sounds to help you focus or meditate? Easily look up the sounds of rain, storms, wind, ocean waves, jungles, forests, etc
Christmas lights are fun and great way to use discrete witchcraft. Select ones in the colors you wish for them to bring ie green for growth, yellow for inspiration, white for protection, purple for psychic abilities, etc.
Some everyday things you can use for discrete witchcraft that don’t cost much at all or that you most likely already have: water, table salt, black pepper, paper, crayons/pencils/pens/markers, vinegar, milk, tea, highlighters, make up and beauty supplies, shampoo and conditioner, rubber bands, paperclips, thumbtacks, computer/phone/tablet, music/music player, playing cards, dice, air freshener, perfumes, toothpaste, rice, flour, sugar, honey, and all kitchen herbs and seasonings.
Can’t afford gemstones or crystals on college budget? Crackle and dyed quartz you can find super cheap at craftstores and online. I bought a whole bag for 4 bucks. Use them based on their colors and shapes. Can’t afford that but still want to use rocks in your craft? Find some rocks you like outside, again use their colors and shapes to determine their correspondences. Want to use them for a specific purpose? Paint sigils on them in the color that corresponds with what you want! Charge them in your windowsill or with your own energy and intent. There you go!
Pocket mirrors are cheap, easy to carry around and great for glamours and on the go magic.
Seriously though, glamour spells are going to be a good option for you. use your make up, skin products, hair care products, brushes/combs, perfume, mirrors, toothbrush/toothepaste and intent. Good to do while you are getting ready for your day
Dream magic is another friend of the city witch! Use crystals, sigils, herbs, etc near your bed before you go to sleep, drink some chamomile, get yourself a dream journal (mine is literally a notebook with construction paper on it), keep it and a pen near you. In the morning write down your dreams, your thoughts, how you feel (tired, refreshed, groggy, etc), and interpret them.
Can’t afford tarot cards? Print out some, you can usually find them online and they won’t last as long as a real deck but it is a good temporary solution. Want a Ouija board but can’t keep one or need it to be easily hidden? Print one out, draw on one on paper or cardboard, fold it up and store it once you are done. Want a pendulum but can’t afford one? Use your favorite necklace, bracelet or keychain!
Tea and coffee magic is great, make your own tea blends with the herbs you like. Or just buy simple green or black tea and add sugar, milk, etc depending on your intentions
As I said before, crock pot magic. The Modern Cauldron: brew and cook all day with it, fill your apartment with the scent of the herbs and food to fill it with the energies they correspond with and you get a delicious meal to come home to! Most dorms allow them. Rice cookers also work well.
Can’t afford fresh food? Have to survive on ramen, canned soup, and microwaved meals? That is okay! They even correspond with things! Tomato soup for love, beauty and passion. Beef ramen noodles for strength, courage and longevity. Microwave mac n cheese for beauty and feminity. Look at their ingredients and what they correspond with. Sure its not as glamorous as a making a huge made by scratch traditional meal but its kitchen magic none the less. Stir it with your intent while you cook. It isn’t fancy but it works just as well!
Use a notebook or binder for a nice grimoire, decorate it as much as you want on the inside. Print out pictures of nature, animals, planets, stars, places, crystals, etc that you cant’ access/afford and use them in your craft. Spell books and grimoires are powerful tools
Don’t have a wand? Use a wooden spoon. Tie a colored string or ribbon to it to correspond with what energy you want it to have and move and flick it as you would a wand.
Knitting, crocheting, and knot magic is very apartment friendly. As well as sewing and embroidering plus it is super calming.
Glitter, sequins, and beads are great in witchcraft! Use their colors to determine their correspondences. Put them in spell jars, sachets, bottles, etc. Glitter tip: if you spill any don’t fret, get some packing tape, wrap it around your hand with the sticky part outwards and dab at that glitter spill. You will literally pick up all of the glitter in seconds!
Enchant and charge your pots, pans, skillets, and other cookware to make every meal magical
Make moonwater in your windowsills. Use it for cleansing, beauty, divination, clarity, protection and purification
Take walks. Even if it is a city there is still nature about. Pigeons flying about, potted flowers outside of stores, grass growing in front lawns, etc. Enjoy yourself, even if it is not some wild, vast forest you can still connect with your local nature.
Pick up litter or garbage you see outside, being in the city we all see it. The natural world around you will appreciate you helping out. Bring a bag with you when you take your walks or travel and fill it with wrappers you see on the ground.
I hope this was helpful to all of my fellow city and dorm witches!

Planet Worship & Astrolatry ✨
Astrolatry is defined as the worship of stars and other celestial bodies as deities or associating them with deities. Deity, in this case, may refer to a God or Goddess but can also refer to something with divine status, quality, or nature. In my personal practice, I do not worship or work with anthropomorphic deities, or deities who are described as having human-like traits and behaviors. Although the planets were named for Greco-Roman beings with these qualities, I do not see them [the planets] as such beings. Instead, I use the lore and correspondences associated with the planets and other celestial bodies to worship them as divine entities themselves. Overall, I believe that the Cosmos itself is divine, which includes the many celestial bodies encompassed inside of it. In my opinion, celestial bodies have their own innate energies that we can work with without thinking of them as what others would describe as Gods/Goddesses/deities, much like we view crystals, herbs, and other objects.
Working with celestial bodies in this sense would be much like working with deities: you could make offerings, use their energy and aid in magickal workings, dedicate a shrine or altar to them, or even pray to them.
While it may sound odd to pray to a planet or a star, prayer is most simply defined as requesting help/assistance or expressing thanks to a deity or an object of worship, and in this case, the object of worship in question would be the celestial body of your choosing.
Offerings are generally given to express your gratitude for receiving assistance from celestial bodies.
Offerings will vary depending on the celestial body you are working with, but here are a few ideas:
bury crystals in the soil
leave crystals on your altar or shrine
burn incense or a blend of herbs and spices
light a candle according to color or scent
leave a mixture of herbs and spices on your altar/shrine
floral arrangements
food and beverages
trinkets or jewelry
use representations of associated animals (could be a drawing, a feather, a tuft of fur, a whisker, etc. all safely and legally harvested, of course)
drawings or paintings of the celestial body
Bonding with celestial bodies and utilizing celestial energy in magickal workings:
use planetary hours or lunar cycles based on intent
perform magick on days of the week that are associated with the corresponding planet
spend time outside under the stars
study astronomy and astrology
draw down energy from celestial bodies based on intent
i like to use the skymaps app on my smartphone to track down the celestial body in the sky for increased accuracy
astral travel to other planets
try spiral meditation to ground, center, and channel celestial energy
use planetary symbols to represent a planet in a spell
draw the symbol in a pen or marker of corresponding color
carve the symbol in a candle or wax cube of corresponding color or scent
create a crystal grid in the shape of the symbol
arrange herbs or flowers in the shape of the symbol
make a corresponding oil and draw the symbol on yourself or another medium
burn herbs or incense associated with a celestial body based on intent
use candles based on scent and color to correspond with your intent
use tarot or oracle cards that you associate with certain celestial bodies
create and use planetary or celestial oils to anoint objects
make crystal grids based on the current planetary alignment
make crystal elixirs using crystals associated with certain planets or other celestial bodies
wear a corresponding crystal on your person
wear a pendant made from corresponding herbs and spices on your person
paint your nails using corresponding colors
make an herbal sachet to use in the bath
use bath crayons to draw symbols and sigils in the bath/shower
drink tea made from corresponding herbs (that are safe to consume)
add herbs of corresponding intent to your food while cooking or baking
Worshiping on the go:
carry corresponding crystals in your pocket
wear a corresponding crystal/herbal pendant
draw celestial sigils/planetary symbols on yourself with a crystal elixir, oil, or marker/pen of corresponding color
draw celestial sigils/planetary symbols on paper and carry them with you
wear planetary symbols as jewelry
carry a corresponding herb or crystal sachet in your pocket, purse, or backpack
say a quick prayer to acknowledge a celestial body or thank them for their aid
enchant every day items with planetary/celestial energy
chapstick/lip gloss/lipstick
other makeup products
shampoo/conditioner/soap
compact mirror
perfume/cologne/body spray
car/house keys
keychains
lanyard
name badge/ID for school or work
wristwatch
stationary (pens, highlighters, notebooks, planners, etc.)
lighter
gum/candy
Cosmic Witchcraft Masterpost (including correspondences, spells, and other useful guides!)

Tips for Discreet College Witches
So I start college very soon, and along with packing, I’ve been doing a lot of witchy prepwork to make this school year more magical.
I’ve put together a list of tips for discreet dorm witches on how to add some subtle magic into your college life.
Cleansing:
Clean your room- sounds basic but you can’t clean a room spiritually if it isn’t clean physically.
Use wax melters or specially charmed air fresheners for specific intents to cleanse the room of bad energy.
If your roommate doesn’t mind- play music. Picking songs with a specific intent will add positive energy to your room as the soundwaves fill the space.
Protection:
Sigils are your friend- they can be taped practically anywhere for discreet practice
If you want to be even more discreet, charge posters, paintings, or other wall hangings with protection or other intents. Hang them by doors and windows to keep positive energies in and negative out.
Charm your room key to keep you and your possessions safe
General Tips:
On move in day, give your roommate a small gift that you’ve blessed (a travel mug, something in your school colors, a new notebook, etc.). Not only is it a great icebreaker, but blessing the object will help keep the peace during stressful times.
Get creative! Green witches can decorate with small plants like succulents, cosmic witches can hang twinkle lights or make glitter jars, and kitchen witches can make dozens of “mug spells”.
Do as much prep work as you can before you move in. Draw and charge sigils, bless necklaces or clothing items.
In the days leading up to move-in, cleanse your body, mind, and spirit. Do glamour and self love spells, drink lots of water, spend time on your craft and with family and friends. But most importantly, get some rest. This is an exciting and stressful time, and witchy things take a lot of energy from your already hectic schedule.
Add your own college witchcraft tips-I’ll be posting a lot of them in the next few days.
Blessed be! - Kate
