we always write about the kind of love that starts wars // but what about the kind that is just sitting on a couch at 3:00 A.M. // watching awful netflix shows // with ceramic bowls of too-sweet-cereal // together // waiting for the sun to rise // what about the kind of love that just is // the kind of love that is immortal // not in poetry // but in our every moment and being // in the blood flowing in our veins // in the way our eyes shine in the night // what about that kind of love?

birth of two heroes

she stood by a stranger's bedside

he saw breathing hope in her eyes

a prophecy made, the stars align

praise a dagger, praise a riptide

bleed red or bleed the sun's gold

watch an immortal rivalry unfold

this is gonna be one hell of a show

witness the birth of two heroes

he rose from the salted seas

she earned the kingdom's keys

feel war's touch & ocean breeze

fates' blueprint of a love story

she ties a home around his neck

he falls with her to world's end

tempt destiny, trace sword's edge

for every quest, call them godsent

i sing for luke castellan--

they may say he died the tragic hero

he who was born to grief, son of a thief

they lied to you... for all the bloodshed

let me tell the story of a revolutionary:

ashen cookies & maddened fervor--

hear a mother's lullaby in a nightmare

run away from home, farther, farther

mourn the living & sharpen a sword

find a family & feed a hidden rage--

curse the gods, open the titan's cage

for every child-soldier gone unclaimed

evil against evil, this is how war is waged

desperation will sell a thousand souls

freewill stolen & forsake another home--

upon a last breath, don't want to be alone

don't let it happen again & a second hope

to try to heal

this feels like a prompt

stitch the soul with sinew & i-didn't-need-you-anyway's

run out of thread & tissue thirteen days into may

tell yourself: it's okay it's okay it's okay it's okay it's okay

self-diagnose, scalpel in the chest, no anesthesia for this pain

what is surgery when nothing is visibly wrong in the first place

wake up in the hospital bed & no one seems to have stayed

a few hundred more mornings, i smile & shed the band-aids

healing from someone, i once thought i would heal with

nervous first kisses underwater

a love foretold by the augurs

ocean's son, wisdom's daughter

she is the lighthouse in his harbor

blessed by the gods and the stars

memorizing all his battle scars

the architect of the heavens afar

& the cyclone who follows her

raise a knife & refuse to yield

their sweet strawberry fields

campfire songs & burning meals

they become each other's shield

she was born to rainbow silks & a mother's faded music notes he was born to desperate politics & two hands full of roses she tried to teach her peace to a boy with war in his blood & cold cruelty in his bones the sheen of poison on his lips the warmth of spotlight on her skin they are the ballad of all the things that could have been
