This time last year I had the pleasure of visiting #santorini. Man, I miss Greece and I will hopefully go back. You have to make your dreams happen people, they don’t happen by themselves. I love travelling and in the last two years I’ve lived in Spain, Portugal, Greece, France and the U.K. At the same time, I’ve managed to save money, while earning half of what we would consider an average graduate salary in the U.K. I will never regret the things I’ve done, but I may well regret the things I haven’t. I urge you, yes you, whoever you are, reading this message. Take a step back and have a think about what you really want in life. That should be your starting point and then work your way backwards step by step so you have a clear plan of how to achieve that. ‘The Nation’s Favourite’ ... this is a cheese which can be bought in most big superstores across the U.K. Personally, I think it’s a nice cheese to eat, but it’s not currently my favourite and I’ll tell you why. 1) they do not inform the customer what packaging has been used to wrap the cheese. I would expect it to be a legal requirement for all products being sold in supermarkets to give this information. 2) the packaging is most likely non-reusable, non-recyclable and non-biodegradable plastic. Personally, I think plastic should stop being made. In this instance, the fact the worst kind of plastic is still being sold on our shelves (in an “advanced country” as the U.K.) is made worse by the fact vendors don’t even need to state what material they use in packaging. I went to the #backyardfood shop in peterborough yesterday and filled up my jars and paper bags to leave 0 food waste. It was a great experience with very friendly people and my conscience was clear buying the products. Later in the day I went to Asda (a big supermarket found in most U.K. cities). The experience couldn’t have been more different. Firstly, I couldn’t find any bread which was not wrapped in plastic. There were 20+ varieties of bread and all of them were in plastic. I then went to the bakers area and asked if they could help me, they said they couldn’t and while one worker apologised to me for this, her boss told her not to apologise. I know it’s not their fault, so I wouldn’t expect them to apologise, but perhaps if more people do this, they will pass on the message to their superiors who might listen. As a result, I did not buy any bread....but I really want some 😢 This is just one example of the type of burden to bear while trying to live a #sustainablelifestyle.
