Mario Kart World Price

Alright let's hit the big topics. I want to discuss the price of MKW.

As we all now know, Mario Kart World will retail for 80 dollars. A LOT of people do not think this game is worth the price. While I am hesitant to say a game should be $80 at all, I want to play devil's advocate and look over everything we know about the game so far to deduce if it's worth the price or not.

This is a decently long post so I'm putting it under a read more. Please read it <3 thank you

What we know about the game right now

This game will have (at least) 3 modes. Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, and Free Roam. Races now support 24 racers as well. All courses take place on a massive map, and they all connect. You drive between the courses. The courses themselves have added a lot of new features, like driving on water, riding on rails, wall jumping, lots of different cars and enemies, and probably more I am forgetting.

On top of that we're getting a lot of new characters, and a lot of costumes. These are all unlockable, meaning it will take a while to get everything, meaning more incentive to play the game for more (something that MK8D was pretty bad about imo). The costumes are very cute and unique and we have no idea how many there are going to be. New ones are being discovered every day. The enemy characters you unlock are also plentiful and unique, and I imagine they'll be very popular with a certain crowd.

Item play looks decently engaging and the new Kamek item looks to create very interesting changes in racing, and also seems to be the way we unlock a lot of the weirder characters.

Races look engaging and tense. We know there'll also be a lot of stuff to do in Free Roam but we don't have all the details yet. Online races will be supported and will (likely. hopefully) be a lot better than MK8D. Overall this is looking to be a solid MK title.

So, is it worth $80?

No, absolutely not lol. Well, at least not in it's current state. However, I believe the game that we have seen so far IS worth $60. As previously stated, we're going to be getting a lot more of an incentive to play as far as unlocking things go, and the graphics, gameplay, and just the fact it's a new Mario Kart, I would say (in my own opinion, and playing into how game companies typically price their games) that this game is worth $60 IN ITS CURRENT STATE.

So if it's not worth $80, why would I pay that much?

Ok here we go. So if I (someone I will be pretending is "the average person") is willing to pay $60 for this game already, then it must be Pretty amazing to convince us to pay $80 for it. How would they do that?

Well first off, Nintendo immediately followed the full reveal with an announcement for a MK direct. We KNOW that what we've seen is not, and will not be, everything. According to Nintendo Sources, this game WILL be worth $80, we're just going to have to "wait and see".

I'm... well personally I am optimistic. However, I know how much damage this has already done for the game's word of mouth advertising. People are not talking about how cool this new Mario Kart looks. They're saying "Hey, have you seen the price of this thing? That's insane!" So the damage is Already done. I really think Nintendo should've kept the prices under tight wraps until they showed us everything that they believed to make it worth it. I believe that was a huge blunder.

What could Nintendo announce to make it worth $80?

I want to discuss what I believe would make the game worth the $80 price tag. (again, I want to reiterate that I am averse for any game being $80, I am playing devil's advocate.)

First of all, and most important, is Customization! We Need to be able to customize this game to appeal to everyone, including the people who love MK8D. Which means that we need modes that allow for playing courses without the roads in-between. It's a fun thing, but that aspect is making a lot of people nervous this game isn't going to be that fun. If this is toggle-able, it'll be a lot more easy to swallow as a feature.

We also need more modes. Time Trials should definitely come back! I think they could even do Grand Prix time trials since they're all on the same track now! I think that would be very fun.

Battle mode is also needed. With how big the Free Roam map is, there should for sure be a few battle mode tracks around here, or at least areas of the Free Roam map that are used for battle modes. I could even see certain modes that utilize the entire Free Roam map! Imagine a massive Hide and Seek gamemode that uses the open world! Ok that would heavily depend on how big the open world map is, but I definitely think that should be an option as an actual gamemode rather than just something you do in free roam with your friends.

We need more cool Characters. Yes, the characters we're getting is cool, but as far as I can tell, the only characters revealed so far are ones who have existed as obstacles on Mario Kart tracks before, with the exception of a few which I expect will be new obstacles on different maps (because they seem to be unlocked by Kamek turning you into nearby enemies).

We need Characters who have never appeared in the Mario Kart franchise before. Fan-Favorite characters like Egad, Cappy, new Kongs, under-represented characters from beloved games— like Toadsworth, il Piantissimo, Fawful, King K. Rool, Hellen Gravely, Grape, etc— and maybe even new third parties. I also think that a lot of the unseen characters from past MK games should be brought back.

I want to see even more ways to unlock things. To unlock characters you just need to be transformed by an item. To unlock costumes you just need to get a food item. While this is good, I would love to get some more specific ones! Maybe Free Roam will have missions around the world that you need to finish in order to unlock certain things! Maybe you could even unlock new items or something.

I think missions could also be a great way to unlock main characters! Maybe Peach gives you a mission at the beginning of the game to collect as many racers as you can (as she is the one hosting this game) and you go around free roam to complete their quest, and then they'll join your team! I think that could be really cool!

Maybe some other things you could do in Free Roam is things akin to Mission Mode from DS. Boss Battles would be amazing here! And given how Mario Kart World seems to be welcoming unlocking random enemies, I could totally see you unlocking boss characters (Like Kind Bob-Omb for example) after you beat the level!

Ok, ok. Let's get out of Free Roam for a second. Let's get back to focusing on customization

I think that it would be really cool if you could create your own custom Grand Prix cups. Pick any 4 tracks in any order and race through them! Including driving to each course after the first race finishes. I don't think this would have to be custom cups, but I think it'd be nice to be able to have preloaders, so they definitely should make a way to save them.

I think Custom Items should return. I think 200cc should return (especially with how big some of the courses are). I think that VS mode should return without the roads in-between, and I want it to have just as much, if not more, customization than was in MK8D.

Online Play should be extremely user-friendly. You should be able to join random games, and games that have preset rules. But you should also be able to join games where the rules can be changed by the host.

I think it would be fun for MK TV to make a come back, and maybe with that new free-roam camera, you can customize clips even more than in MK8!

So... That would make it worth $80?

Well, I think that entirely depends on the person. I think what's most important right now is that Nintendo knock this Direct out of the park! It really, really has to impress if anyone is going to reconsider their decision not to buy the game. As said before, the damage on this topic has already been done, and we know Nintendo is getting a LOT of flack about it. So that either means they're eventually going to have to cave if it truly doesn't live up to expectations, or it means they're going to have to blow everybody out of the water!

Do I have faith in Nintendo? Well, as much faith as a Nintendo fan can have, I guess. I do find it very exciting that Nintendo is doubling down on their price because that means that my expectations have now been set high. But what happens if they don't meet those expectations?

Well, I think that would be a huge, huge disaster for Nintendo. They really can't fumble again, because that last direct really put people off about the Switch 2, reasonably so. This game really needs to impress Everybody in order for this terrible taste to leave people's mouths.

I for one, am not confident that Nintendo will be able to do that to everybody, but I am hopeful that it will be great enough to where the average person might consider it a worthy purchase. Not because I want Nintendo to do well or anything, but just because I don't want conversation about a game I like to just be swamped with negativity. Because even if I do end up buying and loving the game, it can only be so fun if the community is dead and no one else likes the game.

Nintendo Direct highlights (yeah I watched the full thing all at once instead of liveblogging my reactions lol). No images because Tumblr is doin a stupid on my end (has been for weeks)

I am both excited for and nervous about Mario Kart World. I'm hoping that it'll alleviate some of my issues with the Mario Kart Tour tracks from the MK8DX dlc, but I could see it exacerbating it just as easily. Like on one hand having a more open-world style could be a really good alternative to "got warped for driving 2ft off the path only indicated by a barely visible holograph", but it could also lead to getting incredibly lost very very easily.

You're telling me you can drive as a goomba, cow, bee, dolphin, crab, snowman, and fucking FISH BONE in the new Mario Kart but no R.O.B.? ok

Ok gonna ramble about the switch 2 for a second sorry lol.

like. $450 is probably a bit too high given what the console is. but like, not egregiously so? based on the hardware and what they've shown, i'd say that like, $350-$375 for the console sounds like a reasonably "correct" amount. But i don't think $450 isn't too too bad especially considering the price of playstation and xbox, and how nintendo is now actually putting out hardware that (allegedly) matches that. But when you factor in paying yearly fees for what is without a doubt going to be the same incredibly mediocre internet service and games being 80 dollars and the almost guarantee that the joycons are going to be utterly absurd price wise (and probably just as prone to disrepair lmao) like. They truly expect you to drop probably 750 dollars if you want to be able to do something as simple as play mario kart with 4 people.

which sucks!!! cuz mario kart world is obviously gonna be a fantastic fucking game!!! and they know everyone will want it and the second one person buys that package and invites friends over to try it so many people on the fence are gonna crack and give in to these ridiculous prices and then they will jack them up further in the future! People keep arguing the game industry is heading to some form of crash which might be true for the industry at large but the nintendo switch 2 is already practically a guaranteed mega success globally. We know that. And then if the wider industry does have some form of collapse and forced restructuring or change nintendo will probably be able to remain fine throughout that. So I want to give my opinions on everything we saw in the Switch 2 Direct & what I think about it. Please know that everything I say is my own opinions & if you dissagree, that's fine as long as you don't try to force your opinions on me.

The System & Specs

I think a lot of the changes made to the Switch are neat & very much needed (like the better stand imo). I like many, didn't expect Nintendo to catch up with the industry since it always seems they're a generation behind but the fact that Switch 2 runs in 1080p undocked and 4K docked is impressive. The mouse controlls with the new Joy-Cons seem cool but also look like they may take some getting use to at first. Also, did not expect the magnets to be in the SL/SR buttons.

The Games

OMG the games are so cool. New Mario Kart, Deltarune finally getting Chapters 3 & 4, Metroid Prime 4 looks goregous as does the face lift for BotW & TotK, Pokemon Legends Z-A looks great on Switch 2 as well, Kirby Air Ride sequel, Gamecube games, DONKEY KONG!!! Not to mention the new games we saw in the previous Direct like Rhythm Heaven, Tomodachi Life 2, the Raidou Remaster & more. I'm hyped for all these plus games that will come in the future (Side note: I'll be making a most wanted Switch 2 games post soon). However, all this comes at a cost & a hefty one at that...

The Price

Ok so ngl, I expected the console to be $400 since the Switch 1 was $300 and the OLED was $350. The extra $50 doesn't sting as much to me since A: It's higher price mainly due to higher quality and B: The Switch 2 is still cheaper than the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. But $80-$90 for a physcial game is a bit much. I would've been fine with $70 since that's what most big games cost nowadays, but $80-$90? I know many are flipping out about the game prices & are saying this & that about boycotting Nintendo, plus those bringing politics into the mix due to tarrifs made by a certain orange man that I'd rather not speak the name of due to my hatred for him. As for me, I don't fully care all that much if the games are quality enough to be worth $80 or even $90. If they are, I'll buy them & if not I won't. I plan on waiting a bit to pick a Switch 2 up anyways as I'll most likely wait untill my birthday in September to get it alongside the games that come out around that time (Plus it means I have a shorter time to wait to get PLZA since I'll get the Switch 2 version) so I have more to pick up & play. As for the boycotters, you do you but I'm still buying it & nothing you guys might say will change that. As for the political part, I'm not talking about that at all. I don't like talking politics tbh. While I have my beliefs, I'd rather not talk about them. Thats not what I wanna do, I just wanna make my silly little posts rather than talk about political crap (for lack of a better word).

Overall, I'm hyped for the Switch 2 & hopefull for its sucess. I am also hopefull that the games will get some sort of price cut but in this economy, it's fairly unlikely. upon first listen, i lowkey almost tuned it out, i'm sorry... but second time listening to it, since it is the title track, i'm paying more attention to it. the song is very j-pop coded?? in my opinion, the ballad-rock kinda vibe does fit doyoung and this was what i expected, but a teeny tiny part of me was hoping for a little bit more sm core style of music, with the experimental stuff, but this works too. havent watched the mv yet but i'll check it out soon, maybe look up the lyrics translation, cause songs have more meaning when you understand the lyrics too.

Ok, so most of my headcanons were kinda just absorbed from other people, but I do have a few of my own.

Mario:

- He's the guy that gets everyone to try new things. Sports, the Olympic games, the medical field... you name it, and he's probably dragged Luigi and/or anyone who would listen into it.

- When he's not busy saving the world he is a massive goofball and jumps between lots of hobbies.

- He's a movie nerd (wears a lot of 80-90s movie t-shirts) and once tried to get into filmmaking

Luigi:

- He wears his candy cane socks and a turtleneck shirt in every version of his design

- I reblogged a post about it the other day, but ENGINEER LUIGI ENGINEER LUIGI

- He LOVES reading, and in Mario Galaxy spent most of a lot of time exploring the library

(he also writes a bit but isn't very open to sharing)

- He was definitely called a nerd in middle/high school

Peach:

- Despite her looks, she is, if not more adventurous than Mario

- the two are made for each other and make a good team in pretty much anything

- I imagine her treating Daisy a like a cool little sister

Daisy:

- Oh yeah, and about her, she definitely wears tennis shoes under her dress

- I know they're two separate kingdoms, but I think of Toastarena as part of Sarasaland

-Also, I have no idea why, but I have always seen her as Hispanic

Rosalina:

- As evidenced by the Odyessy concept art, she plays the guitar. She plays for the lumas a lot :)

- She doesn't really talk much

Bowser:

-Kamek is his father figure, not just an advisor (I am still a bit salty over how they wrote him in the movie...)

- The Bowser's Inside Story version of him is my definitive version of him. He's such a overconfident doofus in that game I love it

-The Koopalings are his adopted kids and he loves them very much (no amount of retconning will change that for me)

- As seen in the movie, the guy is surprisingly musical. I like to think the castle track music in the mario kart games is composed by him.

- He also teaches his kids to play instuments! (I'll make a separate post for that. This is getting a bit long, haha)

So yeah, these are most of my headcanons for main characters.

my zeldaverse concept is that they all get stuck in the time AFTER the golden goddesses made hyrule but BEFORE hylias creation. each zelda has a varying amount of time since their adventure ended (i.e. totk zelda has been back home for a little less than a month. st zelda is in the MIDDLE of her adventure. sheik only sent link back to her time a week ago. its been 9 months since midna left tp zelda. zelda i zel's adventure ended 5 years ago and her great aunt from zelda ii ended one year ago. etc etc). the idea is that they all wanna get home, so they decide to try and use the triforce, but none of them know which one would be Worthy of it (as in having power wisdom courage). they go to termina [sksw zeldas idea. shes reaaaally trying not to let on shes hylia but still wants to be helpful] bc the fierce deity is their best shot at knowing which one can do it. FD (who appears as their links to each one of them respectively as to "present as something theyre more familiar with." ie botw zelda sees botw link, tp zel sees tp link, etc etc. they end up changing into malon for sheik bc hes still got baggage over link and impa and anyone else so FD chooses someone he barely knows instead.)

anyways FD tells them that all of them are capable of it if they focus in but their best bets are sheik, botw zelda, tetra, and hilda + albw zelda if they do it together (one from each branch of the timeline. kind of). so the gang splits off to find the triforce and erm yeah 🕺💃

also theres two oot zeldas. one for the adult timeline (sheik) and one for the child timeline, who never knew the horrors of war and got to know oot link unlike sheik. oops.

anyways herez my names wooooo (also they all chose them themselves hehe)

BOTW/TOTK - Coreulea (part of the scientific name of wild blueheart tulips which are the closest visually to silent princesses irl, so. shes named after her fav flower...)

OOT (ADULT) - Sheik (later Sage. this zelda awoke as the leader of the sages while the other oot zelda did not have to.)

OOT (CHILD) - Coda (the part of a song where you go back and repeat a portion you've already played before. get it. Coda says she wants something music related and Sheik is the one to suggest the name to her.)

MINISH CAP - Stonie/Quartzie (what her link calls her! used to think it was mean but shes rlly missing him so ..)

TP - Archer (bow of light. prefers to be called 'the archer' specifically if possible, lol)

ALBW - Hilda and Hue (like color. like painting. Hue liked the alliteration of their names hehe)

ALTTP - Maiden (describes herself as a maiden in game. theres more to it but ohhgh thatd require a lot of analysis and this is already so looong)

ZELDA I - Ura (in the og game u had another mode called ura zeruda after u beat the game which literally translated to "other zelda." its a little joke abt how many zeldas there are! she chose it bc its her real first name; zeldas only her middle name!)

ZELDA II - Somnia (from "insomnia." also the name her family uses to differentiate her from her great great niece. she thinks its pretty, if a little on the nose, but she cant blame her relatives for being that uncreative when shes been dead for 100 years, took the money they gave her to not claim the throne, and ran off with her boytoy lmaooo)

WW/PH - Tetra. she wanted a silly nickname too though so they will also respond to Captain

SPIRIT TRACKS - Spectra (like spectral! shes still a ghost here and has a good sense of humor abt it!)

SKSW - Lyre (another name for harp and sounds like "liar" because shes got a bit of a track record for not being entirely truthful about who she is ,,,,)

Also them going to the fierce deity is so cool cause I have so many questions!! How does sksw Zelda know of the fierce deity? Does she have memories of him during her time as Hylia? Does fierce deity recognize her? If he does, does he willingly keep her secret from the rest of the Zelda's as he's correctly guessed that she's hiding it? How does the fierce deity correcting know of just who would be the most familiar to present as and does he know of all the Link's?

There's just so many questions and it's so funnnnnn to think about!! Also I like how he says that all of them are capable but Sheik, botw Zelda, Tetra, and Hilda are the most capable of wielding the full triforce... while sksw Zelda is right there... The choices for all the Zelda's is so fun and cool to! I've never really thought about including both oot child and adult! I can most definitely see that being a major source of pain and angst for Sheik and I'm just super curious about Coda would react to that :o also I'm just a fan of such Zelda incarnations such as MARIO KART and SUPER SMASH BROS being involved in the middle of this.

i think the obvious choice for aziraphale is peach, since she’s been an honorary gay icon since the 80s. she’s also soft, blonde, and perceived as a little ditzy, but can totally fucking WRECK SHOP and Kick Your Ass with a golf club or umbrella or literally just a frying pan.

crowley, though…i think adam invites him to play games with him (he pretends he’s never played mario kart before, but is actually cracked) and he insists he plays bowser—big scary fire-breathing lizard and all that. but in reality, he’s absolutely a rosalina main—tall awesome space lady whose duty is to protect the cosmos and the stars.

Bahaha hello! I was thinking not too long ago that I wish I had a good excuse to make them play games, so this is perfect. Unfortunately, I can't remember what game I was thinking of at the time.

OK, first, this is all so so valid, but I must beg you to consider Crowley and the tire iron, which means they fight over who gets to be Peach before Rosalina shows up (and sometimes after, too, just for tradition's sake). Crowley has more fun coming up with reasons why Aziraphale should feel connected to all of the other characters ("I'm just saying, angel, Wario's mustache looks awfully familiar—") than he does actually playing. This is partially because if there's a way to cheat, Aziraphale's doing it and saying annoying things like "evil always sows the seeds of its own destruction" as if he didn't just use a minor miracle to get a perfect run.

Hard agree that Crowley will lie and say, "Bowser, duh" if ever asked by anyone else. Also, Aziraphale will say things ranging from "I've never even heard of such a thing as a video game. What did you expect?" to "I simply cannot get used to these new controllers. You'll have to be patient with me" if he actually abides by the rules and loses.

I buy "Muriel mains Toad" but only in the sense that Toad's their default choice if someone starts putting pressure on them to "pick a character already!!" I think they like to make sure every character gets chosen in equal amounts and spend a lot of time quietly trying to prove that everyone "has been resting on Dry Bones. Is that the right phrase?"

Also not that anyone asked but I think Aziraphale's pathway to this might have been: correspondence chess, then online tournaments, then other simple games with PvP or tournament aspects (he likes to win especially if it means someone else loses OK alskjdf), and then Crowley got tired of him devastating humans and then feeling bad about it ("I didn't know their perfect record mattered for their scholarship!! What am I supposed to do now? Start losing on purpose? That's dishonest.") and introduced him to tactics games. Then tactics games started having too much plot and dialogue and character development ("This is not how the written word was meant to be displayed."), so they ended up with games where Crowley gets to Go Very Fast and Aziraphale gets to win and it works for them.
