I was thinking about an aroace Sonic who says things that can be taken as wildly flirty/romantic but he just means them genuinely. “You have beautiful eyes, I keep getting distracted while looking at them,” not cause he’s interested romantically in them but because eyes can be really cool and pretty man I dunno what to tell you he likes looking at cool things and he thinks his friends are neat. “You’re the most beautiful person here,” because he really thinks that, he loves his friends

2. Sonic randomly dropping heartfelt genuine comments on his friends out of the blue completely blindsiding them and then moves on like nothing happened while they’re left going ?????? Bonus points if he does something immensely stupid or jerkish just before or immediately afterwards and they can’t tell if he was serious or not with the compliment (yes he was)

3. Sonic usually being so allergic to truly vulnerable moments that when he expresses something heartfelt randomly Tails thinks he’s been stabbed or something and does not believe him when he reassures him that he’s fine he’s fine he’s not dying yeesh

What do you think of the relationship between Tenna and Mettaton?

of all the dramatic turns the new chapters took, i think tenna's arc culminating in him being given to mettaton was the one that struck me as the most upsetting. tenna's life and personhood matter more than what he can give to a lightner – he's worthy on his own merits – but instead of getting a chance to discover that for himself his role as object is only reinforced. now instead of the dreemurrs, all of tenna's self-worth hinges on serving mettaton. worshipping mettaton. being "mettaton's". his strings haven't been broken at all – just traded out for a shinier, newer pair. i really hope this isn't the last we see of him because "being given to mettaton" feels at this point like it's being treated as tenna's intended ending and. for one i am compelled by the swatch>spamton>tenna mirrorism, i enjoy digging into that storytelling potential a lot, but the point of it is that it's a miserable cycle that ought to end. and for two i care about ralsei deeply but i do hope ralsei isn't the only darkner who gets focus on coming into their own. all of the darkners deserve it!

genuinely if you erase false you erase at least 50% of ren’s characterisation and it’s the most important 50% because it’s the 50% that gets left behind in fanon characterisation. I wouldn’t be so mad if people thoughtfully characterised ren beyond making him a dramatic gay simp husband. his love for infrastructure, his cheek, his little shit behaviour, his determination, his sincerity, his way of playing for the team, his playfulness, his casual competitiveness, his insecurity which morphs into self sacrifice, the way he loves, the way he makes exceptions only for her. “what am i going to do without you” “teach me how to people”. ren’s hermitcraft isn’t ren’s hermitcraft without false. ren is ooc without any reference to false. he weaves her in his stories. she leaves fingerprints all over him and he provides her with the paint.

rewatching s1 and in ep2 w*ndigo, dean makes a joke about not bringing provisions into the woods just to pull out a bag of peanut butter m&m’s and stick with me here, it’s why the later seasons’ “goofy dean” loses me

this moment is clearly a joke but if you think about it too much, it also makes some sense; a family size bag of peanut m&m’s is calorie dense and even the high sugar is good to keep you moving which they need on an overnight hunt. it also shows how due to their upbringing, they’ve had to eat lower quality food, things they always had access to that was cheap and also in bulk

what does dean eating ghost pepper jerky then tipping water on himself exist for other than to be a cringy joke? what does smelling old chinese food, testing to see if it's still good then shaking his head with cabbage hanging out his mouth when it isn't serve? it's just to make him look stupid and contrast sam's healthy/clean diet (and superiority but that’s another conversation) which has always existed but it used to be nuanced and natural

we see dean as a child give up the food he wanted to eat so sam could eat it. (“i’m sick of spaghetti-os,” “you’re the one who wanted them,” … “i want lucky charms!” “… there’s only enough for one bowl and i haven’t had any yet!” proceeds to give them to sam, 1x18) we know he hustled and stole food to ensure sam ate. (“so, what’d he take?” “get this- peanut butter and bread.” 9x07)

we also see throughout the early seasons dean teasing sam about his salad or healthy choice while he eats some form of burger or other fast food (or notably, cheerfully eating prison food that sam won’t touch, 2x19). it's typical sibling teasing but it also shows that it isn't new for sam to eat like that and for dean to know he eats like that

sam being picky isn't just a character trait they chose for him, it's a result of how dean raised him; he raised him to like and want healthy food and be food secure enough to reject food he didn't want

but dean eats anything he is given and seeks out unhealthy - cheap, plentiful, filling - food

he is the opposite of picky to the point of it being a consistent bit; they show him multiple times eating when it's socially frowned upon to do so eg. questioning a grieving victim when they're trying to be discreet (1x14, 2x15, 2x18)

a similar moment to the chinese food is in 4x19; dean wakes up in the car while sam brushes his teeth outside and is hungry. sam says there's a sandwich in the backseat, dean smells it and recoils bc it's an old tuna sandwich. the moment is funny on its own but it also exists as a comparison of their lives to adam's; he has a loving mother, goes to school and importantly, a steady stable childhood

it’s a joke with a purpose

it also supports dean's food insecurity; he wakes up and is immediately hungry, enough to complain about it and seek out food before anything else

dean is always hungry bc he never has access to nutritionally rich foods bc he got used to using the money he earned to buy sam's more expensive food. he got used to his cheaper, denser foods and grew up with (and continues to live with) intermittent access to said foods. think of how long it takes to drive from one state to another; how many hours it can take to see another town that offers food, if you arrive at a reasonable enough time for anything to be open. also think how they can’t keep any food beyond what fits in an esky; nothing that needs defrosting, nothing can be heated up. it’s bags and jars and take out for as long as they can trust it

then they get the bunker which has its own kitchen

dean even describes himself as "nesting" when he decorates his room, something he hasn't had since he was four years old, and he uses said kitchen to cook a burger from scratch that he is proud of. he is food secure for the first time in his life and it shows in how often he cooks for both himself and sam

so these moments where they have him acting goofy regarding food are no longer character driven and only exist as a joke which is why they come across as cringy and out of character compared to similar earlier moments

a lot of my issues with dean's characterisation started when they introduced the bunker. the argument can and is made that the reason these jokes happen is bc he feels safe in the bunker, that bc he now has a home he can relax and unmask but that still doesn't feel sufficient. they crank up these sillier moments for both of them, giving them a sort of playing house comedy vibe of two roommates with completely different personalities but it doesn't feel like an authentic progression. it feels forced; an attempt at humour for humour's sake

food stopped being an informed part of their characters and their trauma and instead became flanderised; sam is the judgy vegetarian health nut and dean is his borderline slovenly carnivore counterpart

the MOMENT Helly is back she is storming into offices demanding to know what is happening yelling and calling everyone out for their bullshit and immediately planning how to save Ms Casey the moment she learns who she actually is...... I am so glad they leaned into how scary it is to her that no one noticed she was gone, that her body was being hijacked, and now she is even judged for what her body had done while she wasn't in control. (Some silly headcanons about Mortalitasi and Nevarran traditions that ended up leading me to Emmrich. How typical.)

We don't actually know all that much about Nevarra and their customs. World of Thedas and some of the in-game codex tells us some key points: strong royal families, a rich history of dragon hunting, an elite group of mages rumored to be heavily involved in makings of the country, and, of course, the thing that this country is most famous for - the fascination with the dead.

Our very own Nevarran companion mentions a couple of things about her home country:

And even though she doesn't seem fond of Mortalitasi practices or Nevarran customs surrounding the dead, she admits that some stories that pervade the South are greatly exaggerated:

This makes me think that this interest in the dead is still a personal choice. I doubt that an average Nevarran is obsessed with those rituals any more than an average person from Ferelden is with theirs - those are just a part of their traditions that obviously affect their lives in unique ways, but that is all.

Now, Nevarran nobility are a different matter. They are said to start the construction of their tombs very early in life - lavishly decorated palaces with gardens, ballrooms and bathhouses. A sign of power and wealth for them, and that I can believe.

But when it comes to Mortalitasi, do they, in general, care as much? Do they take all these things, all these rituals, to extreme somehow, professional pride and all?

How much would a Mortalitasi care about their own tomb? Would Mortalitasi friends and colleagues ever promise to lead the other's ceremony depending on who dies first? "Oh, I'll totally mummify you if you're the one to go first, don't you worry, I know you think that Markus is getting sloppy".

The coffin sharing is also not unheard of (the spouses from The Flame Eternal), and I wonder if it's ever used as a grand gesture - to ask someone to be placed in the same tomb?

(And just imagine how messy this could get, the way people are. Building a tomb together only to have a falling out, what are you even supposed to do after that?)

Would it be romantic then, to tell your significant other that you don't want to ever part from them, even in death?

Beacause imagine Emmrich writing a quick letter to his friend from the Mourn Watch (Johanna, if they are still friends after all these years, or Myrna), "doing fine, on a saving the world business trip, will be back when I can; could I trouble you with a favor - a bigger coffin, installed in my tomb, not urgent, just whenever you have the time."

When the reply comes and his friend is (obviously) asking for a reason for such a sudden change, he just looks at Rook from the corner of his eye and replies with "no particular reason, just felt like it."

martin hates being called 'nice.' like, it's a fine compliment on its own, nothing inherently wrong with it, but it's so... bland. generic. it's the 'compliment' that martin is so used to getting because people don't see him as anything else other than just 'nice.' to the point where it's a bit condescending. to the point where martin's eye twitches whenever someone says it all cheerily as if it meant something.

anyone can be nice. it's not like the only thing martin has ever been is 'nice.' it's the type of thing you get told when no one actually knows you and has to figure out something positive to say about you.

just finished my replay of deltarune for the new chapters and god queen makes me so sad on the weird route. how silently devastated she is about losing literally everyone, and how even despite that she still worries about noelle... i hope she plays a bigger role in future weird route chapters because she has such a sad arc going on in the background so far

even if she doesn't, i'll likely still do my own story with the concept (i've tossed around the idea of a queen-centric weird route vn, but... well, even outside of the pre-existing structure deltarune's set up regarding how we engage with it as a game and it engages with us as a player, there are a number of barriers.) but that said — i REALLY agree with you there. there's so much thematic meat to the concept that could be used in so many different ways, and i haven't even gotten into the half of it. like —

let's take a look at one scene that doesn't happen on the weird route — the one where kris, a disguised noelle, and queen drive around the city. the first notable thing here is that, well, the scene doesn't happen on the weird route at all — any progression these two make in either their dynamic with one another or their own personal arcs doesn't happen there. second, there's the obvious implication that queen acts similarly to how mayor holiday did when dess disappeared however long ago — complete with "find her" — that thematically wraps together the holiday sisters as deconstructed damsels. (there's more on that in the other post linked up above as well.) but third is how the scene ends;

"strong". but there's a difference between what queen means here and the "strong" that we hear so much about on the weird route.

obviously, there's the intentionally disquieting element of a darkner's fate at play here �� even noelle sticking up to queen reinforces it. queen's fate as an object is to put noelle above all else, ect. ect., and i think that will be addressed and questioned on the normal route. it's a major conflict that's being established, after all. (on the weird route, well — fate's not exactly being questioned there. you see how that threads in.) but while both we and queen are acting on what we think is best for noelle, there's a difference in how we see her "strength". as demonstrated, queen recognizes that noelle is already strong — a lightner with the power of determination, and someone who is strongly determined at that. (perhaps "i would be [worried] if i wasn't going to find her" is a sentiment that applies to noelle's feelings on dess, too?) but on the weird route, we argue that noelle isn't strong at all — she needs to get stronger. she needs to be protected against people like berdly or queen or spamton — obstacles in the way of kris as noelle's one protector. and that clash — i just think there's a lot of interesting things you could do with it.
