“ - but have you ever considered, I don’t know, not sucking all the time? Just a thought.”
It takes the combined grips of Nuisance and Hound to keep the wriggling, snarling body beneath Fox from throwing him off its back. With three years’ practice of having to fix his own rickety desk chair over and over again, the movement merely ruffles the proverbial fringe on his helmet.
“And I don’t mean that as an insult, necessarily. Well, I do a little bit. But also I have some amount of empathy for the no doubt immense amounts of trauma that had to go into the creation of something so dysfunctional as you, on a very personal level, so have you considered going to the root of that in a way that’s like… useful? Instead of wasting it all on kriffing Kenobi, I mean. Look at the guy. All he does all day is drink tea and commit warcrimes. I bet he knits for fun. Bit of an embarrassing nemesis, don’t you think?”
“I”, says Kenobi, then pauses. The space between his eyebrows is creased with uncertainty, and he looks deeply torn between continuing rocking the shaking Duchess of Mandalore against his chest from his corner of the throne room and re-activating his lightsaber to continue losing his fight against the Darksider Fox is currently sitting on. “I feel like I should object to some part of that, but I’m not entirely clear on what. Or how this happened, again. Isn’t Mandalore a few star systems from your purview, Commander?”
“Probably the warcrimes”, mutters Nuisance underneath his strained breath.
“About as far from my supposed assignment as yours, General”, says Fox a little louder.
Kenobi twitches. Fox cannot claim to know which of them does it. Both, maybe. Probably.
“I will - taste - your - flesh!”, heaves out Darth Maul, snarling and hissing.
“Oooh, kinky!”, calls Grids, from the corner where she’s got her stun-setting aimed at the other Zabrak, currently passed out cold. Fox sighs deeply. He knew he shouldn’t have taken those three - any combination of Grids, Hound and Nuisance in a room together usually spelled chaos.
Unfortunately, it also spelled competence. The Basic alphabet can be funny that way.
The point being: as of some months into the war, one of Fox’s assigned tasks is the surveillance of all GAR-wide communication. All command-class staff theoretically got that memo, but no one seems to have read the fine print where that includes both professional and personal communication, as well as any and all comm devices registered or suspected to be registered to that person. Especially not one Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala.
The point further being, if that sounds both immensely impractical and sort of terrifying in a democratic supposedly non-surveillance state, you’d be bang on the credits, and to Fox’ eternal chagrin the singular person in this whole useless army who’s spent the second of thinking necessary for that conclusion.
The final point being, when one frantic General’s mad dash across the Galaxy to rescue his teenage sweetheart from the spectre of his supposedly dead nemesis crosses his desk on its way to the Chancellor’s inbox, it doesn’t take much time for him to block any and all trace of it across the digital space of the GAR commboard and take matters into his own hands.
“ - which is why I told Thorn to suck it up and be in charge for a few days, and also why you’re still alive, your Highness, very welcome, was no trouble at all”, he concludes, drily. The Duchess stares the wide-eyed look of someone attempting to reconcile clones with ‘sentience’ or perhaps ‘personality’ in her head, but won’t say it outright.
Or the look of someone who’s just been violently overthrown and nearly murdered, perhaps, Fox allows.
“Um -“, Kenobi hedges, blinking rapidly.
“And the reason you’re still alive, probably. You’re welcome for that too, by the way”, Grids calls from the back of the throne room, cheekily.
“Alright”, says Kenobi, loudly. There’s color back in his deathly-pale cheeks, Fox notes, even if that color is a lot of red. It doesn’t fade very gracefully into his beard. “Opinions on whether or not I had everything under control notwithstanding -“
“You really didn’t”, Hound supplies helpfully.
“ - opinions notwithstanding, I am admittedly still lost on why you’re now sitting on Darth Maul and attempting to, to - jeer at him, Marshall Commander!”
“We’re not jeering, we’re trying to create a safe space and lay the groundwork for more open communication”, Fox says, primly.
Maul screams into the ground, attempting for the umpteenth time to rear up and visit great violence upon Fox, which admittedly has him rattling in his crosslegged seat atop his back.
Kenobi raises a perfectly plucked eyebrow. “Safe space?”
“He’s restrained and not stabbing anyone, I personally feel much safer than before”, Grids muses. “Watch the teeth though, Hound. Little biter.”
Indeed. Fox’s right greave will have to be replaced posthaste.
“And anyways, the point isn’t to jeer at him, it’s to make clear that he’s focusing his energy in the wrong places and could be doing much better things with his admittedly not-great life”, Fox adds, shifting to cast a pointed look down at Maul. The Sith is panting open-mouthed into the durasteel floor, sharp teeth gnashing wildly as his piercing yellow eyes shine with barely restrained rage. “I’m just saying - aim higher. You aren’t seeing the forest for the Kenobis, Maul. Can I call you Maul?”
“I will feed you your own entrails”, yowls Maul.
“See, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Right now, I’m an easy target to focus all that built-up rage on, but is killing me really going to help you achieve any of your goals? No! Think about it - when it all comes down to it, who sent you on that mission to Naboo in the first place? Who made sure the Jedi and, by extension, Kenobi would be there to kill you? Who used you as a dejarik piece and then cast you aside the second you outlived your usefulness?”
Beneath him, Maul slowly stills in his struggle, still panting heavily. Hound and Nuisance don’t let it deter them in their vigilance, because they’re damn good vod’e and possess an ounce of common sense.
“And, look, I get it. I could spend the rest of my life punching every civilian who spits on me in the streets and it would even be satisfying. I could hit back the Senators who think of clones as easy targets. Or - I can aim my sights at who’s on top. And I think you know who I mean, because you know as well as I do the same damn man has ruined both our lives.”
Kenobi makes an alarmed noise, and Maul an interested one - not that Fox is going to let him walk out of this place awake. Still, he tilts his head in a way he hopes conveys his helmeted grin successfully to non-vod, as well as the bloodlust behind it. “You’re also welcome for the fact that the Chancellor won’t have heard of your spontaneous resurrection yet, by the way. You’ll retain your element of surprise instead of gambling it away on petty revenge on Kenobi.”
“He cut me in half!”
“He killed my master!”
Fox waves their protests away.
“Also, that’s treason!”, Kenobi adds, sputtering. Fox grins. Kenobi purses his lips, and continues. petulantly, “…do you have any proof?”
“So. Much. Proof”, says Nuisance, dreamily. “Like, do you want it alphabetically or by date?”
Which is when the Duchess, of all people, bursts out into barking, crazed laughter.
“You - you’ve certainly given yourself an edge in that fight, Marshall Commander”, she wheezes, brushing tears from her eyes. Fox raises his eyebrows at her, which she somehow seems to be able to tell, because she gestures at the clunky handle dangling from his belt.
“What, this old thing?” He unclasps the black rectangle from its hook, holding it up in the air. Maul stills strangely beneath him, and Kenobi goes ghostly pale again. Fox is starting to get a bad feeling.
“I took it off Viszla and beat him over the head with it. I figured he’d taken it off a Jedi cadet or something. What? Why are you looking at me like that?”

thinking about a soulmate canon au where you find your soulmate via touch and the jedi order is a bit more pious and has a very respectful no touching culture that obi-wan absolutely abides by. meanwhile anakin is raised on tatooine before coming to the temple and he's really used to touch, and it drives him a little insane, that no one touches him casually in the temple but he learns to abide by it as well and follow his master's example
only for him to fall head over heels for padmé as soon as they touch in aotc and he thinks his reactions to her are due to them being soulmates so they get married because padmé doesn't really know what finding her soulmate feels like either, but anakin's touch and attention feels good (and maybe he unintentionally uses the Force to convince her) so they must be soulmates
meanwhile obi-wan saved his padawan's life when he was like sixteen and was knocked unconscious and tossed into an ocean or something so obi-wan gives him mouth to mouth to resuscitate him---and discovers instantly that they're soulmates....but anakin's out cold and doesn't feel it so obi-wan's left alone with the realization that he's some kind of monster, being the soulmate of a child and anakin can never ever ever know.
so canon happens as canon does but with obi-wan knowing and keeping this secret to himself and carefully making sure he never touches anakin while anakin gets all of his touches from his wife and obi-wan watches from afar knowing he can never tell anakin or anyone else
but palpatine works it out and definitely tells anakin once he's Fallen and killed his wife and also been barbecued (by his soulmate), which makes vader obsess with finding obi-wan (more than he is in canon)
and he finally captures him and has the acolytes chain him up in mustafar. vader visits and asks if obi-wan cut off his arms so he couldn't touch him and know, and it's obi-wan's worst fear and biggest regret that anakin finds out they're soulmates, but now he has no control over the situation. not as vader approaches, not as he takes off his helmet, not as vader leans close and brushes what remains of his lips against obi-wan's cheek
and it feels just as good and right and perfect as it did the first and only time they touched, except now obi-wan isn't sure who the monster is. maybe it's both of them

Star Wars is making me delusional for happy endings more than ever and unfortunately I still don't have regrets. The absolute ache my heart goes through every time I stop and think about it in its entirety is phenomenal because how dare these characters from a galaxy far, far away give me pain
Sure we've got the Force and lightsabers and shiny armor and beautiful planets and I'm tickled pink by it all but no one warned me about the tragedy that threw me off the fucking rails with the speed of light
Because can you imagine cutting off the limbs of someone closer to you than a brother and a lover, the other half of your soul, and turning your back as he burns because you can't bring your lightsaber down and end his misery, you can't kill him, you spent years protecting him, fighting for him, keeping him close and not-close so he can find his happiness that the Code you are both bound to cannot give him as you willingly turn a blind eye, only to turn around and find that he has drifted too far and already completely out of your reach, and all you want to do is go back to the time when it's just the two of you, growing and learning together, watching each other's backs against blaster fire, when it was you and him against the world, not you and him against each other. You spend the next 19 years watching over the two stars that are the only parts left of the man you loved from different ends of the galaxy and learning to love them as themselves even as you see him and her in them and it makes you ache, makes you wish for simpler times as you stare down the red blade into red lenses hiding yellow eyes and you are tired, so tired with longing and pain and guilt for the monster you unknowingly helped create
And on the other hand can you imagine finding the child you thought you had lost along with the love of your life, the very people you burned the world for and you thought burned with it? The decades of anguish and anger all culminating to this moment, and instead of the joyous reunion you have always imagined in your weakest moments, it’s her familiar, beloved eyes doused in the color of the desert skies glaring at you with hate and fear as he hides his arm you ruined with your own Force-damned hands. You have loved this child from when he was just a dream whispered underneath the stars, feeling the warmth of twin suns burning in you as you imagine the weight of him (them, you are a father of two) in your arms, incandescent with the promise that you will protect the family you made, all the while forgetting the family you already had. Then you are on your back, electricity still crackling underneath your skin and robbing you of strength as you look at him with your own eyes for the first and last time, and there is forgiveness you didn't know you were looking for, and when you wake up again on the other side of the veil you hope you can find forgiveness there too

Sometimes a single piece of what I read years ago will beam itself into my head and not me alone ever again. Nor will I ever be able to find it 😭.
Sometimes it's a time traveling obi wan fic where he ends up with multiple masters. One of which is dooku. The only other thing I remeber about it is dooku being like why doesn't he trust me to the other masters

I love how out of most fictional media, somehow, despite all its flaws, star wars has some of the most healthy and diverse range of familial relationships I've seen lmao.
Like you got
1. Single dad
2. Single mom
3. Brotherhood
4. Sisterhood
5. Loving Relatives
6. Loving Foster Parents
7. got a problem with 2 dads? make it 3 dads.
8. Band of misfits trope
9. 1 Guy having to act as the parent of his two idiot friends
10. Literally droid grandpa
Like, I'm not delusional right ?

so im on my second try at watching star wars episode ii. this time i made it to the car chase by virtue of muting the audio whenever i thought jar-jar was about to talk, and i have to say that while i have no interest in the romantic obsession stuff, i am enjoying this dynamic where anakin is like obi wan's shithead little brother who always contradicts him in public and does insane things, except he learned half his insanity from obi wan, because while obi-wan's trying to act all older and wise, he's the first one to dive out a thousand-story window when the impulse strikes

About Obi-Wan's relationship with the Jedi Order (and how it did, and didn't, fail him)
The order gets a lot of crap from the fandom about how they take children from their families and raise them to have no attachments and adhere to the Jedi code. Are there some problems there? Yes. But! Do they kidnap the children? No. They get consent from the parents and take the force-sensitive children somewhere safe, where their otherness will not result in attacks or them being kidnapped and sold into slavery (sadly a prevalent practice). They raised their younglings like their own, and while Jedi were not physically or conventionally affectionate they made sure that the children were kindly brought up and cared for. Nothing is more precious to the Jedi order than their younglings, and in their particular way they gave them plenty of love. The Jedi are big on found family and have a habit of befriending everything that moves (even if it’s trying to kill them, in many cases). A byproduct of feeling life and the emotions of that life all around them is extremely deep compassion and empathy. Without proper self control, this could mean compassion to a fault. To creatures as powerful and sensitive as the Jedi, unchecked protectiveness and caring for someone can lead to fear, paranoia, and aggressive behavior. This “dark side” is really being pulled out of control by one’s emotions. For many force-sensitive sentients, the Jedi Code, and the Order that provided it, were the difference between life and something worse than death. Their way of showing love and affection was a non-physical thing, and left unspoken. Should it have been voiced more? Probably, yes. But it was undoubtably there. I think Ahsoka mentions something to this effect in E.K. Johnston's Ahsoka.
This pertains to Obi-wan because he grew up in the rigid framework of the Jedi code. He was loved very much, by his creche-masters and Qui-gon as well. Obi-wan was easily one of the most talented and powerful Jedi of his time. He was known to be pretty all over the place as a child, and who knows if he would have survived without the Code and the Order. The code encourages compassion without the kind of love that involves being attached. All of this means that the strictness of the Jedi teachings are really in place to protect the Jedi and those around them from the pain of them losing control of their considerable power. When loss of control means becoming a murderous, unstable super-powered Sith, the stability provided by the Code and the Order were in many ways necessary.
Towards the end of the Old Republic (right before the empire) the Jedi Order had become weak. This is where the anti-Jedi arguments in the fandom absolutely have, to an extent, a point. The Jedi Council, and by extension the Order, had become too limited by and tangled in the corruption and bureaucracy of the Galactic Senate. As the galaxy’s government spun slowly out of control, they dragged the Jedi, their peacekeepers, with them in a way. The Jedi became more strict. Many say that Obi-wan’s mental health was not considered by the council after his master’s death, since he was left alone to care for a child he was not prepared for. But how much do we know about that? We have no canon proof of that (although I could be wrong about that, if there's any canon material that says otherwise please correct me, I'd genuinely love to hear about it). We don’t know how much his mental health was addressed. (okay. Don’t get me started on Anakin. The council really fucked up there.) The Jedi have nothing against talking about their feelings if it helps them retain control over them. (Again, while I absolutely agree that extreme emotional control isn’t fantastic for mental health, in this specific case there is a very good reason for it [mainly preventing mass homicide]). However! Here’s the big thing! Obi-wan could have left. He didn’t leave because of Anakin, and his promise to Qui-gon. The Jedi were his family, and he wanted to fulfill what he viewed as his obligation to them. The toll the clone wars took on the Jedi was entirely the Council’s fault for participating in the war. The Jedi are peacekeepers, and fighting in wars is not peaceful. That’s a whole other text novel. But again: Anakin grew up. Obi-wan could have left. No hard feelings. The Jedi do not hold grudges. They would have been sad to see him go, they would have tried to convince him to stay, but they would not have stopped him. The Council failed him and Anakin, but I really blame Qui-gon for dragging Anakin into the whole thing, and for binding Obi-wan to him with a promise that he knew his Padawan would die before breaking. In conclusion, the events of raising Anakin and the subsequent Clone Wars are big reasons for Obi-wan to leave in the name of mental health. The council is the only part of the order responsible for this (which Obi-wan was actually part of himself towards the end). The Jedi are not. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
edit: Just to be clear, I'm not saying how the jedi order operates in regards to their younglings/padawans/members is entirely healthy and good. I'm just saying it isn't entirely bad either. I think it's a complicated issue that I honestly really enjoy trying to untangle.

um Stacy's Mom au au is taking me OUT they fuck with Ahsoka asleep in the next room?? THEY ARE SO MESSY WHAT
in reference to this post's last few paragraphs:
in a stacy's mom au au, let's say instead of master skywalker comming ahsoka to tell her to come back in the first chapter, he goes to get her and decides to personally escort all padawans back to the temple - not vos though as he is a knight and can choke. ahsoka ends up passed out in her bed and obi-wan is really planning to leave but now it's just him and master skywalker and there's something about the man that makes him seem...approachable right now...willing. it may be the exhaustion around his eyes, it may be because this is the first time they've really been alone together since zygerria, it may be because master skywalker had his hand on his lower back the entire time he escorted him and ahsoka back to the temple, it may be because he caught master skywalker looking at his lips at least once tonight, it may be because obi-wan has had way too much to drink really and anakin's pouring a drink of his own because apparently there's important paperwork he must do and and and and it may be a thousand different things that make obi-wan feel just confident enough to drop into master skywalker's lap and ask him if he wants to fuck around - but they have to be quiet because ahsoka is asleep in the next room and because neither would be able to just do it once, because they're both still in love with each other, they start sneaking around to do it more. there's no bet, just a lot of guilt. quinlan doesn't know, ahsoka doesn't know, and it turns out in the shadows is a good place to kiss and a bad place to have the conversations they need to have....so they don't have them and they don't have them and they don't have them and obi-wan tries to tell himself this is enough this is more than he deserves, more than he ever thought he'd get and anakin tries to tell himself that this is all he deserves and more than he ever thought he'd get
they would though!! padawan obi-wan is only going to be this confident around master skywalker once so he has to throw caution to the wind and just try and master skywalker is feeling close to snapping because padawan obi-wan is wearing clothing that is NOT temple approved and looking at him with big eyes and wet lips and he needs this he wants this he is a weak, dirty old man who is going to allow obi-wan to crawl into his lap and suck on his fingers and call him master
even if his actual padawan, and obi-wan's good friend, is in the next room sleeping

i mentioned this to laura ages ago but the longer they are together the more they'll end up drifting together when they're in the same room. it's very subtle and not something anyone notices, including obi wan and amelia. but they'll be standing on opposite sides of the room and then at some point they’ll be standing next to each other.
