so the besties got me to watch atla+lok for the first time with them and i had a fun mini-game of ranking characters after each book (with lok, forgot for atla and only did a full one after finishing lmao) to track how i felt about character development and such, then i found a tiermaker that combined both shows into one so here's a post to preserve my 100% factually correct opinions feat. bestie-named categories. i kinda treat the tiers as a gradient up until emergency meeting, there's some crossover to be found and a few people who could probably swap if i spent long enough thinking on it but who has the time

asami was in S tier for each korra book simply bc i liked her vibes but i couldn't keep her there for the overall rankings bc i feel like the writers did her wrong. she is my daughter tho, i adopted her

meelo went from C > B > A > S thru each book bc he's the icon that kept on slaying

emergency meeting explanations: general iroh is the og bc i heard his voice and screamed impostor / wu i simply could not stand and i wanted to throw him out of an airlock / that's not my katara it's not who took my daughter and did this to her

i only started to like varrick during that last book, so i technically wanted more screentime w just that version of him lmao

Art credit to @saigneux (my bestie~) who drew this for me as a birthday gift. This is Kuvira as Iden Versio, my favorite character from Star Wars that I also roleplay as on @herinferno.

Something that i really hate is when people say that Bolin became a fascist. So i will try to break this down here:

1. They needed someone to be inside of Kuvira's army to know the plans and to show up close who Kuvira really are. And Bolin was the only one capable of doing so. It couldnt be Mako, and for sure It couldnt be Asami. Because:

1.1 Mako has trust issues and he isnt naive like Bolin or trust Varrick like Bolin does.

1.2 Asami would never work with Varrick, that woman hates Varrick, and why in hell Asami was going to do as a soldier. She probably could have capitalists interest in Kuvira, but the capitalist of the show is Varrick and he is already filing this role.

2. The point of Bolin's character is that he is a follower. Bolin is naive, Bolin is the believer, Bolin is the one that look for the good side of people (he a foil to Mako, they are opposites in every way). Mako found himself and he was happy with his job as an detective. Bolin doesn't have any ideia of what to do with his life. Until the start of book 4, he prefered that others showed him what to do. He got used of how he and Mako grew up. Bolin was the child, the one that was protected (this explains a lot on why he is self centered sometimes). He saw Mako as a father figure, the one that figured out things for him. This made Bolin being so naive and imaginative - he is not realistic in any way. In book 2, Mako found himself and started to build a life for him, without Bolin and now Bolin needs to find himself, but instead of doing so, Bolin followed Varrick and gave his trust and destiny to Varrick. This is why he trusted Eska, thats why he followed Kuvira. Sure, he acted like a jerk and a manchild in the process, this still can be solved by the writers. My guess is that he tries to be good to others while hurting everyone around him - or that he, in some way, is trying to make Mako proud of him, but he ended up acting like a jerk when this expectation is not fullfilled. But now, in the comics, after standing up to Varrick, he is trying to find himself without any influence.

Cisco

Bolin

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would banghogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuffbest quality: Bolin is great comic relief!worst quality: Letting fame go to his head in season 2. But do you ever like... Not want to hold a character flaw against a character? Because I feel like Bolin was a douche in season 2 because the writers didn’t know what to do with him... So he ended up in a crappy storyline. 

Also, how he thinks in season 4 that he can just have a picnic with Opal and it will erase that he worked with Kuvira. Redemption arcs take more than just sandwhiches, bro. ship them with: Opal. brotp them with: Korra, Mako, Kai. needs to stay away from: Ever going into acting AGAIN. misc. thoughts: Despite a few bumps, I find Bolin’s struggles to find a place in the world really realistic! he has trouble with being independent because Mako took on all the responsibility so Bolin wouldn’t have to. Which was nice of Mako, but I don’t think it helped Bolin become a better person in the long run. 

Because of that, it takes Bolin a little while to figure out where he belongs in the world, and what he’s good at. That’s relatable and this might make things seem like I don’t like Bolin, but I love him alot and think he’s a very interesting character! I hope he makes an appearance in the Korra comics. 

Barry

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would banghogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuffbest quality: His heroism, as well as his loyalty and devotion to people like people the Wests and his parents. worst quality: Changing the future so he could have his parents back. Like as much as I criticize Snape on here, I actually think Barry changing the future might be worse. ship them with: IRIS. Also in a universe where James because s2 never happened and Iris don’t exist, Kara. brotp them with: Joe. needs to stay away from: The original Harrison Wells, Evil McDouche Lord.misc. thoughts:

Cullen:

That was bad, BUT he did have PTSD at the time, and thus wasn’t in his right mind, so??? As someone who has suffered from an anxiety disorder since the age of 18, I’m not sure I feel okay listing a mental illness as a ‘worst quality.’ Illness is a sickness, duh, not a personality flaw. 

In terms of personality flaw, he does work a lot? Like, go take a nap and get some sleep. ;) Varric puts it best when he says Cullen “spends too much time with a serious expression on his face.” Dude needs a hobby. 

Also, he did take Hawke’s sister to the Circle. Given that the PC after Hawke married him, I’m clearly I forgiving person. :Pship them with: Me. Also, F! Lavellan or F!Trevelyan. brotp them with: Cassandra. needs to stay away from: Lyrium, Knight-Commander Meredith. misc. thoughts: Cullen has to have one of my favorite redemption/character development arcs EVER. he starts out joining the templars because he legit wants to help people. Then he’s tortured, both physically and mentally and watches his friends dies and it changes him... And not for the better? He becomes paranoid and withdrawn, for a while. He overlooks a lot of stuff he really shouldn’t have just because in his mind, all mages were like the ones who killed his friends and tortured him. But then later on in DA2, he begins to go through character development and sees that he was wrong, turns on Meredith, and then helps with reconstructing the city. We met him a few years later in Inquisition, and he’s trying to atone for his mistakes which is like... Really awesome? I’m a girl whose father never admits when he’s wrong and never tries to make up for mistakes, so a guy who takes responsibility when they do bad things, and who has a strong sense of integrity? 😍 And he’s an A+ caring and supportive videogame husband in DAI, I

Morrigan

Motherhood really helps soften her up, which is why I have her have Kieran. ;)ship them with: A male Warden. Also, there is a moment (IN INQUISITION, I don’t ship them in Origins) where Alistair tells the Inquisitor to “Tell Morrigan I stood there looking foolish” that’s kind of cute, and makes me wonder about adult!Alistair and adult!Morrigan, espeically when Kieran is Alistair’s son. Like, there is intriguing fanfic potential there. Not that it matters, since he’s married to Anora in my save file, but whatever. brotp them with: Morrigan and Kieran family feels, yo. needs to stay away from: Flemeth. I like Flemeth, but Morrigan does pretty much admit that Flemeth was abusive, both in Inquisition, and in party banter in Origins.misc. thoughts: Mommy!Morrigan is best Morrigan.
