what is kotlc (i think thats the acronym you used in that poll)
It is! It stands for Keeper of the Lost Cities, an ongoing middle-grade book series by Shannon Messenger.
In it, we follow 12yo Sophie Foster, who's a high school senior and could not be more out of place everywhere she goes. On a field trip, she runs into a mysterious boy who claims he's been looking for her, and she learns why she stands out and can hear thoughts: she's not human.
Whisked away from her life and family to a world of elves, ogres, goblins, and more, Sophie wants nothing more than to try and fit in at her new elf school with her new elf friends. But she's out of place here, too, and the secrets people keep whispering about have her name wrapped up in them.
In order to learn who she really is--why her abilities work different, why she was raised by humans--she has to delve into the underside of the glittering world no one likes to acknowledge exists.
Rebellions and conspiracies meet and Sophie finds her life--and her friends' lives--infinitely more complicated as they realize their paradise is crumbling and threatened, and someone has to step up to save it. It'll put a target on her back, but Sophie's used to standing out--maybe she was made to.
There's of course a lot more I'm not getting into, but that's the overall premise. If you're into middle-grade fantasy, we're around 10 books and counting, and oh boy are things getting wild!
Full disclosure though, even though like 90% of my blog is kotlc, I wouldn't necessarily rec it outside its intended age range. It's a perfectly fine, solid series, and if it sounds fun, great! Just from what I've seen for people who start the series outside the 8-12/13 age range it generally doesn't hit as much.
But either way! there are exceptions and it consumes a lot of my brain space :)

Yukiko's "Yasogami Highschool Visualnet - H" Profile (and Kanji and Naoto's)
The Persona Club P4 book includes sections dedicated to each party member, and one of the things all of them have is a Yasogami High Facebook-esque page called the "Visualnet" with their profile, friends list, communities they've joined, etc. "Yasogami Highschool Visualnet - H" is definitely a "Someone wanted the initials to be YHVH" acronym.
To recap what the Persona Club P4 book is, it's a book made for fans by Atlus that was released back in 2009. It showcases fanart that was sent to Atlus, and provides additional character info and world building info. There is also an interview in the back of the book with Katsura Hashino about the development of the game.
I am god awful at reading handwritten Japanese, and every single character profile is written in a different Japanese font that's stylized after handwriting. I assume it's to emulate what kind of handwriting the characters would have, but... urk...

The bit about Yukiko's blood type joke is "the 'oo' in 'oozappa'"; with oozappa meaning like... roughly, generally, broadly speaking, etc. For the sake of my last remaining brain cells that haven't been Adachipilled yet, and also because I am uncreative as fuck, I just used a different word instead of trying to translate oozappa into English with a word that starts with a O lmao. The Ami Koshimizu mention is cause that's Yukiko's Japanese voice actress. All of the Investigation Team have their JP voice actors as their Celebrity Lookalikes. Also, I have no idea what the dam thing is about lol. Is there a dam if you follow the Samegawa?
Kanji and Naoto's Profiles
I've learned that Kanji and Naoto's profiles were translated back in 2009. Behold, Naoto being a member of the Linux club at school lol. The only thing I have to add-on to these existing translations is that:
Naoto's DM is from Rise, asking to go to get a "bucket parfait" - those comically large ice cream and fruit parfaits you might have seen photos of before. (I don't think they always come served in a pail / bucket, though they certainly can lol.) Not sure if Naoto secretly likes sweets (she did save the Christmas Cake...) or if Naoto gets bullied into going to this stuff by Rise all the time.
Can confirm from the Japanese version of the game that this translator's speculation about Kanji searching for the rare submarine is accurate. Kanji's Ototo and Homerun Bars are something I've written about on this blog before too.
When the mood strikes, I'll do more of these. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)

My Wangan Maxi Tune Career Returns 2024 Edition [Timezone Arcade Araneta City Gateway Mall II & Gateway Cinema] - Part 7 [First Half] (Recorded: Jun 19th, 2024)
Hey, hey! It’s me! 😁 And welcome back for another installment of "My Wangan Maxi Tune Career"! I returned in 2022, and now I'm continue it, this 2024. Yes, it's been a while. I haven't shared my WMMT's play progress in this current year, with the last record I posted was on May 31st, 2023 (Pls, go check it out in the "previous" section) before it went into troubles. And by that, I'm talking about my PC desktop problem. *sigh* 😫😔 Nevertheless, I have now SO MANY photos and screenshots that need to be uploaded on my current social media sites right away before I move on to my current update.
Once again, If you haven't seen my "first & second half" of "Part 6", then please check out my "previous" down below (w/ highlight).
IMPORTANT NOTE(S):
#1: Once again, no #OnThisDay throwback post for this date.
(And) #2: Whoever say's "FFA" was making me unhappy... 😥 Because I can't find the acronym on the Google search... This is why, this game is not ready to meet. Even though, they've already launched the old vanilla installment.*sigh* 😔
So, without further ado, let's get started:
1st to 6th Image(s) 📷📲: ↑
• [1st to 3rd Images] June 19th, 2024, I'm here at the specific TZ Arcade branch in Araneta City Gateway Mall II, with my two beloved paper dolls (🐻👨‍🍳 Chowder & Panini 🐰👩‍🍳). Upon entering the said mall and TZ branch, the atmosphere was pretty nice and clean, much like I visited every TZ branch. Anyway, I've redeemed the ₱200 free Power Load coupon through my gold membership TZ Power Card 💳🕹️😁, with an additional ₱150 load for a good measure 💵. However, there's one problem though... There's no Wangan Maxi Tune cabinet at this particular TZ branch. 😥 Damn, it'll be better if I play it inside this awesome atmosphere, alas it ain't happened. 😓 So, should go back to Trinoma where I previously played? 🤔 Nah, because as far as I know, there's another TZ branch located somewhere at the huge "Araneta City" mall. So, I venture myself to search for another TZ branch with my trusty Google Maps app 🗺️📲, in about a 1 hour ⌚.
• [4th to 6th Images] And said an hour later, I finally found another TZ branch located at the OG Gateway Cinema. 🎞️🕹️😃 Huh, you know what, the layer reminds me of going to the Ayala Glorietta mall in Makati City, where there's a TZ branch beside the Cinema. And that was my "Real Life Story". 😁📖 I was in my High School days 🧑‍🎓🏫 (3rd year High School to be specific; 2010 to 2011) when my former BF ("Best Friend") 👤 invited me to a meet-up for playing a music rhythm arcade game (named "DJ MAX Technika" 👇🎶🎧) at the aforementioned Glorietta TZ branch, which I suck at it. But, I was also playing my debuted "Wangan Maxi Tune 3DX Plus" 🚘🌃🛣️ arcade, which is my preferred over that music rhythm. 😊 Yeah, who doesn't love playing arcades after watching an awesome movie (say the new upcoming Disney movies, etc..). I've been there, but I never actually attempted that in my life. 😥 As for the actual arcade branch, it matches my memories back in 2012 😊, and no doubt this is one of the most unique branches unlike the Glorietta branch because besides the TZ branch was this Taco Bell / Pizza Hut stand, which is an awesome nice touch if I want it to grab something delicious Taco/Pizza from the "Yum" brands! My paper dolls loves eating Taco/Pizza! Yum! 🌮🍕😋 Sadly, I don't have funds for ordering food. Bummer... 😥😓

Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenage Dogday's attire w/ Teenage Dogpressed's jacket]: Let's proceed to our Maxi Tune "Story Mode" journey, with the continuation of "Garage ACE" second half. 📖🚘
Riya 🐰🏎️[wearing Teenage Hoppy and Teenage Catnap's clothes combined]: Yes, sir! However, we have a problem with the steering wheel. 🙁The maneuver is completely jaggy over solid & sturdy wheel. 👎
Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenage Dogday's attire w/ Teenage Dogpressed's jacket]: Yeah! These previous aggressive jerks doesn't know how to respect the machine , or fixing it from the mechanic employee! 😑
Riya 🐰🏎️[wearing Teenage Hoppy and Teenage Catnap's clothes combined]: Yeah, does this came from the "PVP" matches? 🤨
Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenage Dogday's attire w/ Teenage Dogpressed's jacket]: *Sigh* What do you think, Ri? 🤨 But, all that aside, we've continue it anyway, and I've lost my ("5") winning streak because of the aforementioned jaggy steering wheel! 😫 I'm so frustrated! 😠 Ri? What about you!?
Riya 🐰🏎️[wearing Teenage Hoppy and Teenage Catnap's clothes combined]: Well, I carried on and I continued my winning streak! 🤷‍♀️
Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenage Dogday's attire w/ Teenage Dogpressed's jacket]: YOU WHAT!? 😳 HOW THE HECK DID YOU DO THAT?! 😲
Riya 🐰🏎️[wearing Teenage Hoppy and Teenage Catnap's clothes combined]: *Sigh* I was so lucky, that I haven't got the same fate as yours. And while it was challenging with the jaggy wheel, I put in on my best and I've got 45 wins (now 46) on my winning streak. 😮‍💨 *Phew* What a sign of relief for me, Spot... 😩
Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenage Dogday's attire w/ Teenage Dogpressed's jacket]: Lucky you, Riya. Looks like, I'm about to re-climb my winning mountain once again. *Sigh* 😩
Riya 🐰🏎️[wearing Teenage Hoppy and Teenage Catnap's clothes combined]: But hey, on the bright side, our Impreza cars are now at "Level 9, Step 33"! 🔧⚙️🚘 With the last stop to "Fully Tuned" 🔥🚘 is completing "The Legendary F1 Turbine" stories! Eh, Spot? Do you think, you can handled "10 wins" on your winning streak? 😁😉
Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenage Dogday's attire w/ Teenage Dogpressed's jacket]: Heck, yeah! You're right, Ri! I can handle it! 💪😁 One last level and our cars were "Fully Tuned"! LET'S GO! 😃
Riya 🐰🏎️[wearing Teenage Hoppy and Teenage Catnap's clothes combined]: *pat on his back* Awesome, there ya go! Uh yeah, should you changed your title, with this awesome "Tune Maximism"!? 🙂 I've already update my title, though! 😁
Spot 🐶🏎️ [wearing Teenage Dogday's attire w/ Teenage Dogpressed's jacket]: Sounds cool, but I'm gonna save that title via Wangan Navi App. 🚘📲😊
Riya 🐰🏎️[wearing Teenage Hoppy and Teenage Catnap's clothes combined]: Sounds fair, and that includes our Maxi Tune "Story Mode" journey, with us! 📖🚘😊

When I was 12, I was hooked on James Bond, both Ian Fleming's elegantly pulpy novels and the cartoonish movies they spawned. One day, my friend's older brother, who went to Harvard, tossed a paperback onto my lap and said, "Here's the real thing, kid."
The book was The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, the 1963 thriller by John le Carre. I opened it expecting a racier version of what I found in 007 — you know, Asian thugs with steel-rimmed bowlers, gorgeous women as sweetly pliable as taffy. What I got was a dankly bitter tale of betrayal ending at the Berlin Wall. I hated it. It was just too sophisticated for the adolescent me.
You see, le Carre wasn't merely a better writer than Fleming, but a reaction against him. Where 007 fought amusingly acronymed groups like SPECTRE, le Carre conjured a Cold War hall of mirrors in which spy craft wasn't about knife fights and hot sex, but about gambits and machinations in which it was hard to tell the good guys from the bad.
His masterpiece was 1974's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy — not merely the greatest spy novel ever written, but the source of a 1979 BBC adaptation that's the greatest spy show ever made. In anticipation of a new film version that's coming out in a few weeks — the story, you see, is irresistible — the series has just been re-released on DVD, along with its sequel, Smiley's People. Watching again, I found it every bit as gripping as the first three times I watched it.
The great Alec Guinness stars as George Smiley, an honorable spy chief who's been ousted after a shakeup in British intelligence — known as The Circus. But once it becomes clear that there's a mole, or double agent, high up in The Circus, Smiley is brought back to catch him. He does this in the old school, pre-Google way, by sifting through papers and questioning anyone who might be involved, all in a style that's unsettlingly calm.
Bluntness isn't Smiley's thing. He's like the world's greatest poker player, all quiet observation, laconic dialogue and unreadable reactions. As played by Guinness, a master of the ambiguous smile, Smiley exudes a melancholy kindness that may not be kind, and a knowledge of human frailty that's profound — yet not profound enough to keep his own wife from cheating on him.
When le Carre first became famous, he was celebrated for being so realistic. Yet his fictional world is actually every bit as mythological as Fleming's. It's just subtler. In fact, Tinker, Tailor offers the seductive fantasy of entering a secret world, one imagined with alluring richness. We breathe a conspiratorial mental atmosphere in which Every Single Word might be important. And we encounter an oh-so-proper bureaucracy in which the deadliest snakes aren't the Soviets, but the colleagues slithering around your office. Here, even the most devout patriot will be sacrificed by his own side in the great chess game of Cold War politics.
Like millions of others, I can't get enough of this stuff, but for a while it all but vanished. You see, le Carre's brand of espionage tale was rooted in the Cold War, which offered the neatness of two opposed sides facing off. When communism collapsed, so did the contemporary spy novel. The West lacked a clearly defined enemy.
Happily for spy stories, though not for the world, it has one again in radical Islam. And almost predictably, we've begun seeing le Carre-tinged espionage stories — like Showtime's current series Homeland, in which Claire Danes plays a CIA agent who doesn't quite trust anyone, not even her own bosses, and PBS's Page Eight, starring the wonderful British actor Bill Nighy as a canny old spy who stumbles upon volatile knowledge he'd sooner not know.
I can recommend both. Yet truthfully, neither can rival Tinker, Tailor, an almost perfect fantasy for those of us less thrilled by shootouts or chases on jet-skis than by the exposure of what lies hidden. In fact, what makes le Carre's spy stories so primally gripping is that, at bottom, they're not actually about espionage. They're about secrets and lies and shifting identities — which is to say, they're a metaphor for our own daily lives. Except, of course, that Smiley's story is really, really exciting.

for someone that has no idea what ibvs is
(I think that’s the acronym???)
Please explain bc I’ve been wanting to learn more ab it
WEHEHELL YOU SEE-
IBVS means Isaac Beamer Versus The Supernatural. Created by @onebizarrekai on tumblr, it was originally meant to be a comedy-treated-seriously, Undertale Au story, with human versions of the characters. A large majority of the case were based off of sans aus.
However, this fic, now in its second installment, developed into an original work, characters branching into becoming their own people.
The plot of the story goes like this;
'Isaac earned his nickname–Ink–from looking like your run-of-the-mill shut-in artist at school. He had no friends, he spent all of his time in the art room, and no one really knew that much about him. But little do they know, he has an unbelievable secret. He has the power to make his drawings come to life!
All had been going well for him, until suddenly, Edward, aka Error–the most popular boy in school–revealed the fact that he also has unique powers and refuses to leave Isaac alone, making his life significantly harder. People and problems have only continued to show up since, and that combined with them being aggressive high schoolers who have no idea how to socially function, it’s a recipe for disaster.'
It currently has twenty-five chapters in the first installment, word count of 101709, and the second installment with eight chapters, word count 62459. It's an interesting read, especially with just how real the characters seem. Sometimes you forget they are characters with just how life-like they're written.
There's lots of comedy, supernatural elements, weird crack shenanigans, and even mystery, especially with the origins and such of powers in general.
A real good read! Totally recommend it!

Ok so, we’re pretty much sure that Liz was a virgin when she got with Philip, there’s nothing confirmed nor really rumored on Philips part so it’s overall debatable whether he was or not but I *just wonder* how much both of them knew about the deed. Obviously Philip was a sailor, went to all boys schools with rowdy boys, etc etc so I’m assuming he knew a good amount about it. But *liz*? Did she even know anything about that being in her position in high society? She was pretty sheltered not only with her status as heir apparent but also being a target during the war. I doubt she got a thorough sex talk education from her mother or any nanny/lady in waiting. I wonder if she had “girl talks” with the girls in the ATC and that’s where she learned about it? Other than that I have no clue where she would have ever even learned the first clue about the RHP? Did the poor girl even know her clothes had to come off? Lol!
Ah, "RHP;" I have not heard that acronym in some time; everyone seems to want to focus on uncomfortably personal questions about me.
*clears throat* These are all perfectly valid questions! Something else to keep in mind is that Sea Duke had older sisters. I'm not assuming they would have divulged such information to him, but he wasn't a complete stranger to Women Stuff either.
No, the Queen Mum doesn't strike me as one who'd have that discussion with her daughters, and probably wouldn't have deemed it necessary to do so. I honestly don't ponder about this much, but I'd say it's safe to think "girl talks" during her ATS days is a reasonable guess, as that'd have been the only time as an adult that she'd spent time around regular people, without a chaperone/hovering staff member (to my knowledge). Perhaps she'd also found out from married friends, or got curious and looked it up in a book all secret squirrel-like in the middle of the night because "One wants to do naughty things to LT BAMF."
The only thing that makes me think she truly didn't know until marriage is that, and I believe it was in Elizabeth and Philip: Portrait of a Royal Marriage where I read this, but one line stands out in my mind, which is that "The Queen discovered sex on her wedding night." Whether that means that was her first time (which it was, that's a fact), or implying she had no idea until it happened is moot.
Either way, Ma'am was not prepared for how great getting Royal Navy D was, and Sir was equally as unprepared for how frequently she wanted it (though I'm sure he had no complaints of fulfilling such a request). THEY FUCKED. THEY ARE STILL FUCKING. AND THERE IS NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO ABOUT IT.
Ma'am yeeted because she wanted Royal Navy D and you cannot convince me otherwise.

Rambling mun post under the cut.
TL;DR: A discussion on my blog and characters, discussing how low-activity things are and where my characters stand.
I don’t know what it is, but something recently got me thinking about this blog and the characters within.
I actually got quite sentimental; the blobs themselves have been some of my longest-running fandomless original characters, and they’ve helped me experiment with various things, such as writing and drawing more. The blog has helped me meet wonderful people, many of whom I’m in touch with to this day.
That being said, it’s not a secret that I haven’t updated here much at all. To tell the truth, I’m uncertain about the fate of the blog itself.
Mind you, this isn’t announcing anything; it’s more of a discussion.
So when I started this blog (June 12, 2013), this was an ask blog (which was a bigger thing at the time) called “askthefourthwallrepairman” (later shortened to the misspelled acronym “askthefwrp” and later the name this has today). Back then, I just had MS Paint, a tablet given as a gift, and a fun little idea.
A lot has changed since then, both on the blog (a shift to RP, Cat Slime and Marie joining, and different art programs being used) and in my life (graduating high school and college, joining the workforce, and my interests generally being in flux). Things changed in the Tumblr RP scene, in terms of both the people and how things were done, and I think in several ways I failed to adapt. I don’t regret this, mind, but it is a fact.
On top of all this, the Fourth Wall Repairman started as a gimmicky joke made by a teenager. As I grew older, I saw more potential in the concept, and still do. A lot of ideas were thrown around without much care, but I would love to explore them more thoroughly. This goes for both Marie and Cat Slime, as well; I think there are possibilities that I didn’t take advantage of at the time.
I don’t know what I’ll do with this blog, but I am certainly keeping my Fourth Wall Repair Crew, and maybe you’ll see them again, whether that’s here or elsewhere. I’ll keep you posted on that front.
In any case, I want to thank you all for viewing and engaging with this blog. I'd also like to thank those of you that read this far.
If anyone has questions for me about the blog or about my characters, though, I’d be glad to answer them OOC.

This is a sample text from a Telegram group chat between 4 girls, talking about pets and the names of pets.
There are 3 main features on the language genre on Telegram (although this could only be true for a conversation between all girls)
The use of emoticons and capital letters to portray emotions and feelings
The use of acronyms and short forms
The lack of punctuation other than the exclamation mark being used
Something of note is that stickers were commonly seen in this group chat as well, however, they cannot be copied and pasted here. The stickers were used to portray emotions as well, thus they fall under the 1st feature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The use of emoticons and capital letters to portray emotions and feelings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Usually, when a person is trying to portray heightened emotions such as anger, happiness, or disbelief, or simply to portray the loudness and intensity that the message should be read, the message would be typed in capital letters. Emoticons are not seen as much, however, due to the popularity of stickers on the platform.
2. The use of acronyms and short forms
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The acronyms and messaging slang seen in this conversation are the words "inspo", "tho", "tbh", "lmao" and "fam". "Inspo" is a short form for "inspiration", "tho" is a shortened form of "though", "fam" is a shortened form of "family", "lmao" is an acronym for "laughing my ass off" and "tbh" is an acronym of "to be honest".
3. The lack of punctuation other than the exclamation mark being used
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the above screenshots and even in the rest of the screenshots, there is a lack of punctuation used. The only exception being the exclamation mark being used when trying to express heightened emotions.
CMC depends a lot on non-verbal cues due to the lack of face-to-face communication. The non-verbal cues used on Telegram include stickers and capital letters. The use of short forms and acronyms as well as the lack of punctuation in Telegram is not unique to Telegram and can be seen in other messenger apps as well.
Another thing that differentiates Telegram from other messenger apps is that you do not require a person's number to start a Telegram group. This means that Telegram can be used among close friends, acquaintances, and even strangers. This means that the language used can differ very greatly. My sample comes from my group of close friends, and the language users use can differ from group to group.
CMC allows people to speak to strangers around the world and create connections, thus privacy has become a concern. To combat this, Telegram has a Secret Chat mode, where the sender can choose the amount of time a message can be viewed for.
The demand for ephemeral content has risen over the years because anything on the Internet is permanent.

Introducing Myself in this Community
“Goal setting is the secret to a compelling future.” — Tony Robbins. As a young student, one of my goals for the far off future is to earn a degree from a prestigious university and achieve a high level of professional achievement. On the other hand, gaining success isn't a simple task, and it's highly possible that I'll face some difficulties along the way. Having my ultimate goal in mind at all times is essential for me to achieve success in overcoming the obstacles I face on a personal level.
I'd want to use this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Elaizah Dela Cruz, and I'm a young woman that aspires to do great things in life. People from all walks of life often ask me, "Where do you see yourself in ten years from now?" and I always try to provide an honest answer. And when people ask me what the future holds for me, the answer I give them is always the same: "I don't know," since at this point in time, I have no idea what is ahead for me. To respond to your inquiry, the answer that I would give you if it were up to me to decide what I will be doing in ten years is that I am currently enrolled in medical school in order to become a physician. I am well aware that becoming a physician will provide me with a number of difficulties; nevertheless, if I am able to keep my interest in the profession alive, I am convinced that I will be able to prevail over those difficulties.
But before we get into that, let's talk about where I am right now: I'm a senior in high school and I go to St. Paul University of the Philippines for my classes. I'm going to school for STEM, which is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. My experience at this university over the past few months has been quite positive; I've picked up quite a few new skills, and I'm fortunate to have friends who are willing to explain things to me if I'm having trouble grasping one of our class topics. I decided to take STEM classes since medical technology is the major I want to study in college, and taking STEM classes was the ideal choice for me because they would prepare me for college before I even started. Since I've mentioned it here before, one of the prerequisite courses I need to take in order to become a physician is medical technology. In order to become a physician, though, I first need to complete a pre-med program. And what is it about medicine that makes me want to practice it? It's because I have a compassion for those who are struggling, and I'm motivated to become a physician in part because certain members of my own family require medical attention but can't get it because they don't have the money to see a specialist. Because of this, I made a commitment to myself that I will provide assistance to anyone who is in need of medical care without expecting anything in return.

Writer Spotlight: Alexis Nedd
It's New Release Tuesday! We caught up with Alexis Nedd (@alexisthenedd) to talk about her debut novel, Don’t Hate The Player, which is out today. Alexis is a Brooklyn-based pop culture “fanthropologist” who has only ever loved things in a big, obsessive way. As the Senior Entertainment Reporter at Mashable.com, she covers television, movies, and video games, focusing on sci-fi and fantasy universes like Game of Thrones and the MCU. When she’s not writing for money, Alexis is writing for no money on her socials, where her feeds consist of deep dives on weird history and analyzing pop culture as an artifact of society.
Don’t Hate The Player is a YA romance novel that follows two competitive eSports players as they navigate school, parents, and other IRL stuff, while preparing for their biggest (and only) tournament yet. As real life and online life collide, both find the boundaries between online and IRL slipping into each other.
Can you start by telling us a little bit about Don’t Hate The Player?
In one corner, we have Emilia Romero, a popular, high-achieving Puerto Rican girl who secretly plays Guardians League Online with the elite Team Fury. No one in her real life knows she games, and everything hinges on it staying that way. In the other corner is Jake Hooper, a quiet, detrimentally empathetic nerd who’s had a crush on Emilia for years. He plays GLO with Team Unity and thinks he’s otherwise invisible.
When Guardians League Online announces a huge tournament in their city, Jake is shocked to see Emilia competing. Jake is now the only person who knows her secret, and they have to work together to keep it...all while the tournament brings their teams closer and closer to an ultimate Fury vs. Unity showdown.
Outwardly, Jake is an awkward, suffering bundle of anxiety, quite successfully hiding his integrity and wit. What was enjoyable/difficult about writing a neurodivergent romantic lead?
I started working on DHTP around the same time I learned I had ADHD. Getting that diagnosis as an adult ushered in a really strange and painful period of reevaluating my childhood, knowing that I was neurodivergent and didn’t get the help I needed. I gave a lot of the traits I used to think made me “wrong” or “bad”—the anxiety, the spinning thoughts, the self-deprecating coping mechanisms—to Jake because writing them into a lovable character felt like correcting the narrative I had grown up writing about myself.
It was difficult to excavate all of that because that level of self-evaluation totally sucks and takes forever, but by the end, I could look at Jake and think, “if I can’t hate him for feeling this way, I have no business hating myself for having felt that way.”
DHTP comes alive in its use of online gaming maps and chatrooms. How did you approach getting those virtual places right?
I made my first internet friends when cameras on phones or laptops were still rare, so I got to know a lot of people through chatrooms and forums. People’s personalities, real or constructed, come off so strongly in those rapid-fire conversations. That solved one of the problems I knew I’d have coming into this book—how do I introduce the reader to a group of characters who aren’t going to show up until the end and make them seem like part of the story the whole time? Answer: Spy on their group chat.
It was so fun to play all five roles in those chapters and determine who uses acronyms or memes, who always punctuates, what their in-jokes say about them, and so on. Truly some of my favorite parts of DHTP are in those chats.
How important do you think it is to meaningfully include online culture in YA literature?
After the year we just had, when most social interaction moved from the analog space to the digital, I consider the transformation of “online culture” into just “culture, full stop,” complete. I say this knowing I am a fully discourse-poisoned individual, and other people or writers may have the freedom to think less about that all of the time. A significant chunk of life takes place on screens these days, so if I’m writing about life... I’m going to write about the screens.
One of the big themes of DHTP is that what happens online is real whether you like it or not. So what looks from the outside like a mummy and a snake beating a guy up outside a space church can actually be the beginning of an IRL love story. Just because it’s silly doesn’t mean it’s not important.
What makes a good beginning to a story?
I don’t have any definitive advice on this, but with DHTP and the second novel I’m currently working on, I think my favorite method is putting your main characters in a situation designed to make them act the most themselves. For DHTP, we meet Jake at a party he was invited to out of politeness, so his discomfort and anxiety are front and center. Until he meets Emilia, who is only at the party because it’s in an arcade where she can indulge her gaming obsession without her parents watching. There, now we know some important things about both characters, and from here, it’s a 75k+ word journey to get them to kiss.
What’s the first book you remember loving?
This is the hardest question anyone has ever asked me. Are you sure you wouldn’t like a nice explanation of string theory instead? I’m sure I had others, but one of my formative obsessions was A Series of Unfortunate Events because as a child, I was so often frustrated with adults who didn’t believe a single word I said just because a child was saying it. Those books capture that frustration and, more importantly, do not resolve it, which I think was kinder than telling young people that everything would be OK if we read a lot of books and placed value on facts.
As a writer, how do you practice self-care when juggling work commitments and the creative processes of writing and editing?
I simply do not. After two years of working full-time and writing this book (most of it during a global pandemic), I have mastered none of the skills required to unplug and take care of myself beyond remaining alive and upright. I do not want to project the image of someone who has the self-care matrix figured out.
You don’t have to have it figured out to make something you’re proud of. You can be exhausted and smelly and know you should probably work on that soon and still create. I don’t recommend it, but it’s possible. Ask for help when you can.
What would Emilia or Jake’s blog look like if they were on Tumblr? What kind of content would they (re)blog?
Emilia’s blog would be a secret Guardians League Online stan account. She’d reblog fanart and write incredible deep dives on strategy and lore. No one would know it was her blog, but talkswithknox.tumblr.com would be required reading for people who want to know the deep magic of the game.
Jake is mostly here to read good takes on his dashboard and learn something he didn’t know when he logged in. He has never written an original post, and that’s fine.
Thanks so much for taking the time, Alexis! Don't Hate The Player is on shelves from today (and it's really, really good).

*HISTORY.
It was never a secret to little Zoë that she was an unplanned child. The absence of a father throughout all her formative years was evidence enough, along with a distinct longing for the more that simply could not be provided by her poor, immigrant mother. She grew up a child of invention, prone to fits of drama and imaginative histrionics — teachers would note that she’d seemingly mastered the ability to cry ‘truthful’ tears on a moment’s notice by the age of nine, and used this to trick classmates into believing some heartbreaking story that would lead to her acquiring more toys, money, and candies than she’d left home with.
Her better qualities, however, showed an early aptitude for art, rhetoric, and escapism. Zoë learned young that there was nothing people loved more than a good story, or the impression of one — with ‘good’ denoting not just qualities of wholesomeness or courage, but instead something that one could sink their teeth into and bite at until they were left with complete satiety. The world around her, more her mother’s than her own, was all dismal and dingy and small. There was nothing interesting about their one-room hovel, nor the fact that both inhabitants worked degrading, menial jobs just to put scraps on their table once a day. What was interesting, however, was what young Zoë imagined in its place, dream-worlds turned into reality by way of canvas and pretend — deluding even herself into believing she was a special girl made for special things.
Instead of attending university like her mother had hoped, Zoë took a job as an au pair for a politician’s family, and remained with them for a few years longer. It was through this work that she had her first true encounters with the elite — not as a participant, but as an observer, and one who was granted the opportunity to study until it became second nature. Once that piece fell into place, the girl continued her attempt at being her own divining force, creating destiny rather than waiting for it to come to her. Lying to her mother about the status of her work, Zoë Vogel relocated to London and re-fashioned herself as Zoyalind Amandine Finch, the daughter of a French heiress and British-German diplomat. On charm alone, she could sell her new acquaintances on the fantasy — but then again, who could have denied someone with her beauty, knowledge, and the natural eloquence of her tongue?
Quickly, she became a darling of the London arts and club scene, acting on behalf of her ‘Finch Foundation’ by hosting artists’ debuts and other vernissages before they moved onto larger exhibitions at London’s grandest museums — including, by way of the pseudonym of ‘Birdy’ — her own work. Long dead was the girl who’d hand-scrubbed floors, polished silverware, or chased after children, and in her place was a socialite free to roam the realms of high society and an artist whose anonymity ensured her success. However, on a ruthless string of bad luck, Zoya got desperate when her financial demands couldn’t be met by what she made ( or made up ), and so she struck a deal with the Jabberwocks: their loaned support in exchange for the business her so-called foundation brought in — and whatever else they found her useful for.
In the time since, Zoya’s become the shining starlet of the Red Rose Casino, hosting her parties there and ensuring that the status-hungry and wealthy alike empty their wallets and shed their inhibitions at the Jabberwocks; crown jewel, only to come back begging for more. The casino provided the experience, but she sold the illusion in the first place, the promise of elite treatment sealing the fates of so many as little more than Alices gone down the rabbit hole of gambling and grandeur.
*WANTED CONNECTIONS.
more will be added v soon, along with a proper connections page once i figure out zoya’s theme and pages and whatnot !! these are all up for grabs, and if you like bits of one but not the whole idea, dw — i’m all about collaborating on some cool plot together, so just hmu and let’s dream something up <333
ENEMIES: It’s an obvious one for a girl like her, but I think it’d be fun to play around with varieties of this trope, meaning — friends turned enemies, rival elites, someone who’s realized they’ve been conned by her, etc. Honestly, I just want to see Zoya squirm,  retaliate, and/or attempt to con her way out of the situation. There are lots of reasons to be a hater, and so I’d definitely like to play out different versions of ‘enemies,’ most especially between Zoya and a member of the Jolly Rogers, but also between Zoya and a civilian or member of government.
GUIDING LIGHT: ( Likely only suitable for someone unaffiliated with either group. ) She doesn’t hate the woman she’s become, but I do think there’s a part of Zoya that wants to know if she could ever be someone more typically ‘good.’ This plot would be for a far gentler soul than she is, who against all odds, is or becomes someone that Zoya ( normally very suspicious of the goody-two-shoes types ) not only trusts, but even aspires to be more like. I’m especially interested in playing this out and seeing how Zoya’s own shadowy self might affect the other’s light-like qualities, in addition to the reverse, of course.
HADES TO HER MEGARA: ( Likely only suitable for a fellow Jabberwocks member. ) I imagine that this is the person with whom she struck her deal, and is essentially indebted to for loaning her money in exchange for the business her fallacies brought in to other establishments. Similar to Meg / Hades, I think that this person ( whether of their own accord or on the Jabberwocks’ orders ) would find ways of stretching out the terms of the deal, making Zoya interminably in debt to them and seemingly without a way out. How this might pressure her into making other deals and decisions, along with exploring a potentially twisted little connect, would really be so fun to me.
HEARTBREAK: Heavily inspired by this, and ( despite the connect’s name ) not necessarily just for a romantic plot!! Similar to the Guiding Light connect, I’d really like to play around with someone who either sees the good in Zoya, or perhaps has simply been duped into believing her to be a truly good person. The drama comes in when either the curtains are raised and the masquerade is over, and it’s clear that Zoya is going down a path / becoming someone that the other cannot support. I can definitely see this fitting a romantic or friends sort of ship, especially one which originally started via Zoya’s con artistry but has since grown into something far more real than Zoya could have ever predicted — thus making the outcome, on both parties’ ends, all the more heartbreaking.
WRATH OF CONS: ( listen, i had to go for at least ONE terrible punny name. ) I’d love a little cat-and-mouse sort of relationship between Zoya and a rival con, especially one that starts with neither party knowing the other’s true intentions. A little bit of Mr. and Mrs. Smith energy, though not necessarily romantic-inclined!
ofc, non-specific connects are always welcome! for example: friends, romances, colleagues, etc !!
*EXTRAS.
i. Although it happens to be an interpretation of her birth surname, there’s genuinely no reason as to why she chose the surname ‘Finch.’ She simply thought that it lent a nice ring to her new name, and sounded believably aristocratic enough — an old money name, and one with plenty of character and animal allusions to go along with.
ii. Fittingly for her alliance, Zoya is enamored with tarot and all things occult. She’ll gladly read her friends’ spreads at parties, perform a monthly energy cleansing at her flat, and check her horoscope at breakfast. Her belief in these practices is...not exactly firm, per se, but there is a sort of optimistic nihilism behind it all.
iii. Zoya has the palate of a child: sweets, fried foods, uncomplicated dishes, things packaged with sugar and no visible expiration date, the same old order from the same old place. Even with her talents for reinvention and fallacy, you can’t adjust tastebuds with a trick of memory.
iv. Taking after her mother and the countless others of their low-income area, she’s been a smoker since her teen years, and her voice ( naturally somewhat low-pitched ) has gotten increasingly raspy over the years. Doctors would argue that it’s chronic laryngitis, but Zoya simply embraces it as part of her smoke-and-mirrors charm.
v. Though French was her mother’s native language and the one they spoke at home, Zoya learned English out of necessity and studied German for several years in school. When she worked as an au pair, she put those lessons to good use in order to better accommodate the family. Zoya much prefers French and German when not speaking English, so much so that one can easily tell where they stand with her depending on the language of the pet name she gives them.
