Just. Omfg imagine Toki and Buggy bonding SO MUCH and Toki is the one who helps Buggy find Her Style and Her Confidence. Oden also has Big Himbo Dad Emergy too, so I bet he'd just be like ":000 a GIRL! WONDERFUL!!! I shall have TWO daughters!"

Roger ofc takes big offense to that and it becomes a shipwide brawl over who gets to be her dad, and Buggy is just laughing, crying, pickpocketing everyone. Only like. Three fellas even have the driving NEED to call her their daughter, they just love the chaos. Shanks is just left GAPING bc ofc he loves Buggy, he always has, always will, but the way she was smiling, the way she's just beaming at the acceptance, no matter how dramatic it is - by Davy Jones, it steals his breath away.

Whatever you do tho, don't imagine Toki dressing Buggy up in traditional Wano attire. Don't imagine Toki taking on the role of aunt or big sister and sharing this culture with Buggy. Teaching her the ways of warriors from her homeland, the codes and dress and recipes. Don't imagine Toki telling Buggy "family secrets" like recipes, fighting styles, etc. Don't imagine Toki just easily saying that of course Buggy needs to know these things! Blood is but the fluid of life, and love is what makes a family - and Buggy has so much love to give, so much to receive, and Toki calls her a child of Wano in heart and soul, in all the ways that matter should Buggy want that.

And Buggy, who has only ever wanted to BELONG, oh she accepts without hesitation.

Leaving Toki behind was hard, but she gifts Buggy an heirloom of sorts, a hair piece that she keeps either tucked under her beanie or safe in a chest, anchored to the floor of her room ((or hidden carefully with Devil Fruit powers)).

The day Toki manages to make/get a suitably sized kimono for Buggy, maybe for a party on the ship, maybe a birthday celebration ((and here I insert my Wano Culture Headcanons, that there's a birthday where children transition to young adults, and it's similar to a quinceñera but different, partially because it's done at 13, and then a second one at 18, a five year period of growth, life compared to butterflies, and so Toki convinces the crew to do these for the Cabin Kids-))

Buggy comes out, hair done, kimono flawless and bright and bold and so very her, a quiet joy on her face, and the crew is FLABBERGASTED.

Roger is sobbing.

Rayleigh has suddenly aged 20 years because oh shit oh gods she's going to be beautiful as an adult, oh damn it all he's gonna have to beat men off of her-

Shanks is caught between swooning, wanting to tackle her, and remembering just how the heck breathing works.

((Roger, Rayleigh, Crocus and Oden do rock paper scissors to get the first dance with her, and it dissolves into a fist fight somehow. Shanks gets involved and bites them. Toki takes the first dance.))

I have. So many emotions about transfem Buggy, bestie, send help it's all my brain can think about.

It's okay, I miss hot weather because here in Spain I am freezing and I am a spring child. My spiritual flower is a sunflower. I need the SUN. I NEED TO GO INTO THE FLAMES. So I'll stay there happily.

Please, Toki would so adopt Buggy. And Oden would be THRILLED. He'll see them getting along and he'd instantly say they look like mother and daughter. Buggy would be shy about it but Toki would probably laugh and say "Oh! Do we really? What do you think, Bugs?" and it's just,, So sweet,, Oden loves her a lot and he can't wait to see his Hiyori grow up too. Roger would be FURIOUS when he hears that because he "found her first" which, you know, true, but it's a weird way of saying that's his daughter. Anyway- Rayleigh would be so fucking done with everything. They'd fight about it and Buggy would actually have the time of her life because she feels important and flashy for once in a long time, and she'd laugh oh so beautifully at them when talking with Shanks about it in their room. Like she'd just laugh at the situation and Shanks is still not getting used to his very very not platonic feelings for his best friend. But he'd enjoy his time with her. He's just going a bit insane.

I can't stop thinking now about Buggy finally finding a place to belong. She's been lost for so long,, Feeling left out. And now Toki has gifted her with the most precious treasure there is: A home. Belonging. And I am so so emotional right now. Toki would be so proud of her and Buggy would just be so thankful. If Buggy called her 'mom' at some point, she'd feel embarrassed right away, but Toki would probably fight the tears and hug her close. Going crazy, really. All the men in Buggy's life fighting for her first dance,, Rayleigh just knows he'll have to fight all the men that hurt his precious star. And Shanks is starting to think about that too and the thought of Buggy dating somebody else makes him sick, so perhaps he needs to start with a plan to confess finally (he's so asking Toki about it. I'm gonna cry). Roger crying because he wants to enjoy every second he has left with her... It kills me.

I just know that to this day, Buggy still thinks about Toki as her mom. She never mentions it to anybody, but she feels such a strong connection to Wano and she's dying to go there finally someday. She might have not been born there, but her soul belongs there. And it's just so sweet. I am sobbing, thank you. Every time she does her hair, she feels Toki's hands instead of hers and she remembers everything she taught her,,,

Now I have on my mind a very silly Shuggy thought about Shanks trying to flirt with Buggy but failing miserably (because he's a kid and he only knows how to tease her or follow Roger's advice which are, um, not good) and Buggy just being so done and exhausted. She can't stand him! He's so annoying! Sometimes she doesn't know if she wants to punch him or kiss him! And she doesn't even know if Shanks likes her back because he keeps acting stupid. And she goes to Toki for advice and she's like "oh, darling... Men are stupid. Do you know why you felt smarter than them when you were unaware of being a girl? Well, one of the reasons is that Shanks is a kid. He's dumb. But he loves you and cares so much for you... He's just having a hard time trying to make his way to your heart" / "But he-! He's so damn- Ugh. He's such an idiot. He already did, and he just doesn't know because he can't see it and I can't stand him-" / "Well, maybe you should be the one telling him, huh?" / "What?! No! And give him the satisfaction of thinking I fell first?! I'd rather die. No. He has to make the first move". And now Toki is involved (like the rest of the crew because Shuggy is a whole teen drama) in their love story because Buggy keeps complaining about men being stupid and Shanks keeps saying he doesn't get how Buggy can't see he's in love with her.

outtake: andromeda #1

There were things I took out of andromeda which I revisit from time to time, and here are two of my favourites (slim pickings, really). They're about 2.1k words in total and nothing really happens... so I'd give it a T rating if anyone is worried.

The first scene is from Chapter 3, when Wonwoo took Mingyu to a gun range and taught him how to hold a gun (naturally, content warning for gun) which I took out because it felt oddly intimate too soon in the story (har har, I know they literally had sex in this chapter). It was retribution for Wonwoo shooting in Mingyu's general direction in Chapter 1 without fully understanding the implication of his action, because he only knew Mingyu on paper then.

The second one is an overheard conversation between Minghao and Wonwoo from Mingyu's perspective in Chapter 2, not sure why I left this out... looked like a good hint to ophiuchus when I read it again. It also would have been a good hint to the ending where Wonwoo opened the door to Minghao in Mingyu's rescue mission. Oh, well.

andromeda is very far from perfect but it'll always have a special place in my heart. <3

1.

“It’s your turn.”

Mingyu stares at him blankly. The gun lies idle above the table, but Mingyu feels it presents a bigger threat out of Wonwoo’s hand than in it. Wonwoo studies his expression for a moment before nodding, then he’s fiddling with the weapon, removing the magazine and ejecting the bullets in the chamber. Then he takes an empty magazine and reassembles the parts. The transition is smooth, mechanically flawless. Wonwoo has done this so many times, it became muscle memory for him.

“Now it’s empty,” Wonwoo points out. If he weren't so tense, Mingyu would have been offended that he insinuated Mingyu didn’t know what he was doing. “You can’t misfire,” he reiterates, “You’re safe. You can try to hold it.”

In theory, it was easy to agree with Wonwoo’s proposition. It was easy to understand his line of reasoning, easy to trick himself into thinking he’s ready to do this. It was easy to let Wonwoo drive them here, it even felt natural to watch Wonwoo prepare to shoot and take perfect aim before sending bullet after bullet to pierce through the paper target.

In practice, Mingyu can barely lay a finger on the gun.

“You must think I’m weak.”

“I would never think that,” Wonwoo says calmly. His steady gaze bores into Mingyu’s eyes. “A weak man wouldn’t have made it this far living the life you’ve had. A weak man would have let me bleed to death on the pavement and saved himself.”

“Of course you have to say that, you’re—”

“I don’t make a habit out of lying, Kim Mingyu.”

He comes to stand behind Mingyu, fingers wrapping around his wrist in a motion that feels like a caress. Mingyu lets Wonwoo guide him until he’s lifting the gun from the table. Wonwoo then fixes the position of his thumb and index finger against the black polymer frame. He firms the grip Mingyu has around the handle.

“The gun should always be held using the dominant hand, in your case the left one. I did it earlier, but after each time you insert a magazine, you need to send the slide forward.”

Mingyu gulps. His hand feels like an unnatural extension of his body. Like it belongs to someone else. The gun is empty, he reminds himself. Wonwoo’s front is pressed over the breadth of his shoulder. Mingyu is safe. The gun is empty. The gun is empty.

“Okay,” he says in a small voice.

“The other hand goes here,” Wonwoo continues, positioning the fingers on his right hand above the left ones, save for the thumb which Wonwoo places against the frame. “Hold tight.” The words are spoken within an infinitesimal distance of his ear and Mingyu suppresses a responsive shiver. If Wonwoo notices anything, he doesn’t vocalise his observation.

“Last time, how did you do it?”

“I don’t remember.”

I try not to remember.

“That’s okay,” says Wonwoo, tone soothing. “The best practice is to make sure you’re steady on your feet. They should be,” he nudges Mingyu’s feet with his own and spreads them until they’re aligned with his shoulders, “like this. Good.” He runs his hands across the length of Mingyu’s shoulders down to his extended arms, “don’t lock them, bend your elbows slightly.”

The gun is empty. The gun is empty. The gun—is in his hands. “Wonwoo, I can’t.”

“Okay,” Wonwoo says. Carefully, he moves from behind Mingyu to stand next to him. “Loosen the grip and I’ll take it from your hands. It’s empty, remember? It can’t hurt you.”

There’s no adrenaline rush that helps Mingyu overcome it this time. “I won’t let it hurt you,” his bodyguard adds carefully, trying to catch Mingyu’s gaze. “So you can let go.”

Mingyu’s eyes flitted in his direction. The shot he took the night Wonwoo got hurt on his behalf was nothing more than a lucky shot. Mingyu didn’t aim, he could barely see ten feet in front of him in the dark alley. It was pure coincidence that he took someone down, and he can’t rely solely on coincidences anymore. The next time it’ll happen, and it will because this is Mingyu’s life and he can’t escape it, he doesn’t want to be helpless. He doesn’t want to be incapable of protecting Wonwoo the same way Wonwoo is undoubtedly protecting him. I won’t let it hurt you. Mingyu should at least show him the same amount of consideration.

“Okay.”

“Okay,” Wonwoo echoes, waiting for Mingyu to let go.

“Tell me what to do next.”

“Are you sure?”

Mingyu nods.

“Aim at the target. Use your dominant eye.”

“How do I know which one is dominant?”

“Choose an object in your field of view and focus on it. Close one eye, and then the other. When the object doesn’t move compared to when you have both eyes open, that’s your dominant eye.”

He follows the instructions carefully and Wonwoo returns to his position behind him, face hovering over Mingyu’s shoulder to be able to see what he sees. Mingyu’s arms are starting to ache. His muscles burn and he can taste metal on his tongue.

“Then I shoot?”

“Yes. Don’t think too much and don’t hesitate,” Wonwoo tells him, placing his hand between Mingyu’s shoulder blades. “The amount of pressure you need to apply on the trigger differs between guns and it will take time for you to get used to it. Don’t loosen your grip as soon as the shot is made, that’ll leave you exposed to the recoil.” He rubs his thumb back and forth on Mingyu’s body, over his dress shirt. Mingyu sucks in a sharp breath. The gun is still empty, but the weight of it in his hands doesn’t allude to the fact.

“I don’t think I want to try that today.”

“That’s okay,” Wonwoo quickly answers. “Do you want to put the gun down, or would you rather give it to me?”

His forehead is sweating and Mingyu can’t even wipe it without losing his mind. “Take it."

Instead of going in front of Mingyu again, Wonwoo just circles his arm around Mingyu’s neck, reaching around his body to gently remove the gun from his iron grip. Mingyu’s palms are red from the pressure and he stares at the marks it left until Wonwoo reaches out to hold them in his hands. The sensation of his touch is jarring, but Mingyu’s started to feel like his hands are his own again. Wonwoo turns his palms down and draws random patterns on the back of Mingyu’s hands.

“You’re fine.”

“Yeah,” Mingyu says.

“You were very brave.”

He doesn’t say anything to that.

“Try moving your legs.” Mingyu does, and immediately fails, staggering forward only to be steadied by Wonwoo’s hold on him. “We’ll just stand here for a minute, then.” He nods weakly. “Just for the record, your achievement today doesn’t mean I’ll go easy on you when we hit the ring later.”

That manages to draw a scoff out of Mingyu. “I wouldn’t expect any special treatment.”

Wonwoo’s eyes soften a fraction; a look that comes as quickly as it goes away, making Mingyu regret not having the ability to immortalise the moment in the case it came only once in a lifetime. He clears his throat and squeezes Wonwoo’s fingers. “Okay. I want to get out of here.”

“Okay.”

He wakes up alone, the other side of the bed cold and abandoned, but the bruised skin on the sides of his neck tells him Minghao was really here. No matter how much Mingyu missed him, he wouldn't have been able to conjure an apparition strong enough to leave a physical mark. He stretches his arms above his head before he throws on his sleeping robe, walking out of the bedroom to find Minghao.

Mingyu is about to make the turn to the common area when he hears Wonwoo's voice. “Would you care for a cup of tea?”

“No need. And you can drop the pretence,” Minghao says flatly.

If Mingyu didn’t know any better, he would have said Minghao sounded jealous. But why would he be? Nothing is going on between Mingyu and Wonwoo, and Wonwoo is certainly not the one whose body Mingyu just pressed into the fresh bedsheets an hour ago, whose hand tightened around Mingyu’s throat to the point tears welled up in his eyes, whose legs caged Mingyu’s waist in a silent urge for him to go deeper.

“Mingyu’s not around at the moment, so you don’t have to play nice with me.”

He can hear the frown in Wonwoo’s voice. Imagines the way it looks on his face, the familiar stamp of disapproval he's gotten used to being on the receving end of. “I think you’ve misunderstood me.”

“Have I, now?”

He holds his breath at the distant sound of a war horn being blown. Minghao takes the first step in the ritualistic dance before a great battle and Wonwoo has every opportunity to meet him halfway. Mingyu doesn't think he will fall for it so quickly, but Minghao can be resilient when it comes to certain things. He'd find the right buttons to push, the correct strings to tug at, the perfect weapon to strike with. He shifts his stance a little to the right to be able to see half of the living room.

“My job is to keep him safe," Wonwoo says, sitting down across from Minghao.

“And you don’t care who he sleeps with in the meantime?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“Then say what you mean," he snaps.

“I have no qualms with you," the bodyguard answers without rising to Minghao's provocation. Quite frankly, it irks Mingyu how well he can keep his composure. "As far as I’m concerned, you’re not here to do him harm.”

“No more than I already have after making him sleep with a married man without telling him all the facts.”

Minghao says it in a matter-of-fact tone as though it doesn't bother him, or more precisely he doesn't want to show Wonwoo that it bothers him. Mingyu, on the other hand, winces internally. The deceit doesn't hurt as much since it's stopped being one, but old wounds can and will bleed again if you put a knife to it.

“Again, that’s not what I said.”

“I told you to say what you mean.”

“Our interests are aligned, Minghao-ssi,” Wonwoo says firmly. “There is no point in playing the part of the antagonist, it accomplishes nothing and only wastes what little time you have to spend with him. We both know you’re not that kind of character.”

There’s a beat of silence before Minghao’s voice, now no longer steely but laced with awe, presents Wonwoo with an observation. “Because you don’t think Mingyu is capable of getting involved with someone like that. You respect him that much.”

“He’s a good man.”

“I know that,” Minghao grits out, like he’s saying you don’t have to tell me, I know him better than you could ever. “Well. If you didn’t respect Mingyu you wouldn’t have jumped in front of a bullet for him.”

Wonwoo stays silent for longer than a beat, and Minghao races him to a response by presenting another question. “What if there comes a time when I intend to hurt him?”

“Then you would put me in a terribly difficult position.”

“Elaborate," he demands.

“I’d have to weigh which one would be worse: the damage of letting him keep you, or the damage of making him lose you.”

God, that sounds like a threat, one that Wonwoo has every intention of following through. Growing agitated by the situation, Mingyu bites at his lower lip until it begins to sting. Wonwoo should know better not to threaten Minghao. Yes, he is more than excellent at his job, but he shouldn't poke a sleeping dragon on its belly if he doesn't want to get scorched by its fire. How much money is Mingyu's father paying him? Even such tremendous loyalty can be bought, he thinks bitterly. He waits for Minghao's response, not wanting to step in unless he's needed.

But Minghao just gives a little sigh and says, “Your dedication reminds me of someone I know.” He pauses. Mingyu has a feeling he knows who Minghao is referring to, but it's a little odd to compare Minghao's devotion to his husband with Mingyu's bodyguard's to him. “I hope you don’t grow tired of its crushing weight. He needs someone to watch his back, he’s always too busy watching everyone else’s.”

“I won’t.”

“It works both ways,” Minghao says, rising to his feet. Mingyu sees Wonwoo do the same. “If you have ill intentions toward Mingyu, never let me hear a word. I can’t promise I will stay out of your business.”

“I understand," Wonwoo nods. "I know this might not mean much to you, but as I said, my job is to keep him safe. If there’s anything I take seriously, it’s that.”

As Mingyu makes his way back to the bedroom, trying to make as little noise as possible so Minghao wouldn't suspect he's gone out of bed at all, he thinks that Wonwoo is a good actor. After all, Mingyu almost believed the words he said.

OKAY, SO! I answered 5 and 18 for Jervis here! The rest, I'll put under a cut.

Jervis

6- Favourite thing this character has said? - This is a tough one, because I love just about everything that comes out of this man's mouth and it also really depends on the version! From his entire monologue in his Joker's Asylum story and his breakdown in BTAS(Perchance to Dream). Or sillier things like his rhyming argument with cash in Arkham Knight or... Just about anything in Secret Six.

One that did stick out to me though, in terms of characterization and how I generally perceive his motives was in Arkham Origins. When he's testing the mind control devices on his "rabbits."

"That's always been the trouble, though, hasn't it? No one ever wanted to hear what Jervis had to say. He might as well have been invisible."

THIS is exactly what I mean when I say he feels overlooked. Jervis has a need to feel seen. To be important and valued enough to be heard. And that's exactly where at least some of his issues with control begin.

5- What do you not like about this character? - I'm gonna be honest. The major thing I dislike isn't even that deep. I just think he should be depicted as Southern more often. That we should have a selection of official, Southern-accented voices to pick from.

Don't get me wrong, I love the depictions of Jon that we have. But ever since I learned about Year One Scarecrow, I need that Georgia boy!

6- Favourite thing this character has said? - You know that part in Arkham Knight where you go back to the clock tower and you have to take out a bunch of militia guys and Scarecrow's waxing poetic about fear? Describing the effects it has on the body, how ancient it is, the kind of primal fear our ancestors felt?

Yeah, all of that.

18- What’s something you associate this character with? E.g. a certain colour, object or scenery? - I associate him with autumn colors. Orange, brown, and red mostly. Obviously, there's just the entire concept of fear. He's usually on my mind when I get the urge to binge some horror content.

Halloween is another big association. Whether he loves it because it suits his motif or hates it because of related trauma, I feel like every version of Jonathan Crane has some strong feelings about Halloween, one way or the other.

5- What do you not like about this character? - I don't really have a lot of negative to say about Ed. At least as a whole.

I guess if I were to gripe about a specific version, it would be Gotham. I liked him well enough? But his transition from Ed Nygma to the Riddler was just. Not great in general. I feel like someone who's watched the series more than once could explain it better than I can. It was all very weird, and not in a good way.

6- Favourite thing this character has said? - Honestly, everything out of Arkham!Riddler's mouth is pure gold. He's quickly become my favorite just for the shit he says and Wally Wingert's flawless delivery of that shit! The most memorable though would probably be the classic:

“You solved it? Ah, but this is merely check, detective. Soon I will be mating you. Wait, I meant chess! Chess, you base, gutter-minded savage!”

18- What’s something you associate this character with? E.g. a certain colour, object or scenery? - The obvious color is green(and to a lesser extent, purple). I associate the Riddler with games and puzzles of all kinds. Just going by the things on my desk there's crosswords and Rubik's cubes and... Yeah, even dice, although he's more about skill than chance.

Portal comes to mind too. I feel like he'd enjoy the games(and making his own test chambers).

13- Contrary wise if it is an OC, what’s your favourite story with them in it you’ve written? - I am... Honestly so bad about actually writing the content for my self-inserts and OCs. Any plotlines that happen are either in my head or RP if I'm lucky.

I guess one of my favorite ideas I have for them(on how they meet Jervis) is the one where Jervis has recently broken out of Arkham. He returns to his old hideout to grab a few things only to discover that someone's broken in.

He finds them at the table. Full costume, feet propped up and sipping tea. They claim to be the March Hare and he just kind of... Accepts/goes along with it? All is forgiven because, after all, "what's a little breaking and entering between friends?"

However, what Jervis will not tolerate, is their FEET on the TABLE!

The Masters Series Part Two: Ibiza by Deep Dish 2000 Progressive House / Deep House

Y'know, I'm about to do some big generalizing here, but I don't think I really much care for this whole globetrotting DJ-big room superclub-progressive house scene that really started to sprout up near the turn of the millennium. There's just something so cheap and superficial and inauthentic about it all; like a big manufactured industry was constructed and made to capitalize off of club culture, which was originally a thing that grew organically in each city. It all sorta seems to have been streamlined and sanitized and corporatized by money-hungry vultures who really want to push these big DJ sets.

And I wouldn't care all that much about all that if the music was good or fun, because as a nostalgia junkie, I know that so much of the music that I loved in my childhood was actually more or less manufactured in a lab for mass consumption (just skim through radio business trade magazines from the 90s and you'll see how transparently gross the whole process is). But this brand of "global" progressive house music just seems to lack so much soul and ingenuity. Like, I feel like a big draw to this stuff is the fact that producers were generating very unique sounds with their equipment and software. But then you actually have to do something moderately interesting with that unique sound instead of just merely looping it over a pumping backbeat. Again, I'm generalizing here, because there's a slew of nifty progressive house tunes out there, but so much of it feels so uninspired, uncreative, and disposable. Like, cool, you crafted a piece of sound that doesn't really sound like anything else; now show us that you can actually craft a song that builds to something complex and dope that incorporates that sound instead of making this particularly novel sound the focal point of your production.

Anyways, this is a double-disc mix from the prolific Iranian remix and DJ duo of Deep Dish. And if you're at all into electronic dance music from the ~mid-90s through ~early aughts, then you've doubtlessly heard some of their work before. Discogs currently credits them with having made a whopping total of 834 remixes to their name 🤯.

And a few of those appear on here, most notably their own closer to disc 1, a remix of Gabrielle's "Rise," which, despite this mix having the name Ibiza on it, is one of the only tunes within these two CDs to actually have that warm, trademarked Ibizan sound. But there's a small handful of other cool tunes on here too, like Futureshock's remix of Moby's "Porcelain," which abruptly chops off pieces of the original's iconically deep and heavy strings and lays a house beat under it. And Loophole's "Feet" features this bottom layer of a droning, ringing, unidentifiable, continuous sample underneath its pounding percussion.

And I should also mention that although I don't dig much of this selection, the transitions are absolutely flawless. Definitely digitized, but they really flow like water, so much so, that if you're not staring at your media player while the mix is playing, you won't be able to gauge exactly when the next song has begun and the last one ended.

But, yeah, I feel like as a general rule, if you come across a DJ mix that has the name of a big city on it, like [insert DJ name here]: Tokyo or Madrid, etc....might be best to avoid it? Maybe not, I don't know. Gonna test this theory out a little bit in the nearish future though. Got a bunch of those Global Underground mixes in the offing.

Expanded for my circus AU! Xiao and Venti backstory below the cut!

I think Xiao would've started as part of a rhythmic gymnastics team with the other yakshas. Things Go Down and the yakshas split up. Xiao's always been a part of this whole that they had, so Zhongli encourages him to go solo, which he does. His performances are technically flawless. He'll pull off moves no one else dares to attempt as a gymnast. But like. He doesn't care about it. Doesn't care for much of anything anymore.

On the other end, Venti retired early from performing. His nameless bard friend died and never really coped with it properly, so there was one performance he wasn't really focused on due to this weighing on him and Things Go Wrong. Thus, Venti is injured and retires. He recovers from the injury but fell into this hole where he feels like he doesn't deserve to get back up there and be happy and successful while his friend is dead and he (to himself) messed up so terribly.

Enter Aether and Lumine.

Aether sees how Xiao's face immediately drops when he finishes a performance, how his injuries are... not untended but he definitely rests for less time than he's supposed to and the strain on his muscles and joints is now chronic pain. He communicates this to Lumine.

Lumine knows of Venti from the time she and Aether spent apart and one of the circuses she was at did a couple clinics with him. She's witnessed his performances and knows about why he retired. She finds him with a bottle in his hand and despair on his face outside of the theatre they're performing at one night. He'd come to see a show bc he missed the whole scene and couldn't stay away.

They end up having a talk and Lumine gets an idea. She tells him that they have a performer who's lost the passion and maybe he can say something to inspire them. As a mentor.

Venti's hesitant about it but ends up agreeing after telling her that he has no intention of coming out of retirement. Maybe it'll make him feel useful.

So she takes Venti backstage, Aether whispers an "is that who I think it is" and so they find Xiao.

The conversation is... a trainwreck to say the least. Venti's all fake smiles and empty words about flowery passion and Xiao sees straight through it so he shows no sign of interest in the conversation, which ends with Xiao leaving with a half-assed comment on having to go stretch and cool down.

Lumine had a feeling it'd go down like this, but wanted to try anyway. Aether subtly slips into their farewell conversation that the twins work late today so the rehearsal space will be open until super duper late.

So Venti leaves with plans to go to a bar and wander until someone kicks him out, but before he leaves, curiosity gets the better of him. He goes to the rehearsal space just to see what he's been missing out on and maybe breathe in the worn ropes again. He gets there and What A Coincidence! Some aerial silks are set up. Warm-ups for other gymnast-type performers or the like.

Even through the blur of the tears he finds himself in front of the silks, sobered up a little by now.

With one quick peek around and probs zero regard for his safety, he gets on and performs one of his routines. The movements are still ingrained into his muscles and carved into his bones. He feels his heart start to beat again. Like this is the first time he's breathed in years.

He finishes the performance and the colours around him start to dim again. He breaks down crying and What A Day For Coincidences This Is!! Xiao caught the back half of his performance, and for a moment he forgot about everything weighing him down. For those few minutes, the pain in his muscles became a dull ache, his joints felt good as new, and he felt like he'd soar were his feet to leave the ground in that instant. Like someone injected purpose into his veins again. At the breakdown he understood that this was someone like him. Someone who was being cut apart by the jagged pieces of an identity in disarray.

So Xiao comes out once Venti's calmed down and they have a heart to heart along the lines of "it hurts doesn't it?" And they talk about feeling like something that was once like breathing feels unreachable now and lost purposes.

Venti ends up suggesting that Xiao try aerial performance, thinking that he may be past his prime but that maybe he can help someone fly again.

Xiao agrees but only after a lot of pushing, and still dazed from feeling that sense of purpose again.

They end up spending all night in that rehearsal space and by the time the sun's coming up, Aether and Lumine are in there watching them cooperate and exchange a little high-five.

Venti joins the circus exclusively as Xiao's coach. He makes Xiao stretch more and forces him to take care of himself (insert team bonding shenanigans here to get him away from the workplace) but there's still something missing in his performances. His technique in anything Venti choreographs for him is as flawless as it can be at his level, and the transitions are smooth and tasteful, but there's still something lacklustre.

It's that trust in someone else. As antisocial as he may be, Xiao was cultivated in a team setting, so Venti suggests that he keep training with the silks (which he's picking up surprisingly fast bc it's Xiao) as he gets back into shape. Xiao notices this and helps him without knowing what Venti has planned. By "help" I mean throw a bucket of water on him at 6am like "rise and shine we're going on a run".

After a while of this, Venti has a team exercise in mind. They choreograph a routine and perform it together. Something about strengthening your own skills in trusting someone else. By then Xiao's proficient, and Venti is back in shape.

When they perform their routine, it's rusty, uncoordinated, and needs a lot of polishing, but Xiao's smiling and Venti can't hold the giggle that escapes him.

Venti calls Aether and Lumine over to see Xiao's progress with his other solo routine (which is now a lot better than before), Venti offhandedly mentions that they've been doing practice pair routines and it's really helped his energy and why are you two looking at me like that.

The twins are curious about the training exercise, obviously only to make sure they're safe and they aren't straining the silks too much (Venti assures them they aren't bc he would know) and to see if they can apply this method to some of their other solo performers.

Before Xiao and Venti know it, they're being told to polish the routine bc next show they're opening with that.

They're terrified and convince them to at least hold off bc there's so much to polish (and to emotionally prepare themselves), but overall they come to the agreement that they don't mind the arrangement.

At which point the two realize that Aether and Lumine's names may as well have been Coincidence 1 and Coincidence 2 from the very first night.

They help each other process their respective traumas. Xiao helps Venti on those days he feels like he can't process the day without alcohol, and Venti drags Xiao out of the rehearsal space on the days he feels cripplingly alone, and slowly, they become part of something amazing.

I watched it once to just watch it and again afterwards to absorb it because GOD THAT WAS SO GOOD!!!

The animation and colors and lighting and transitions were all AMAZING!! MAD props to Knights of the Light Table for this because this video looks absolutely gorgeous. All the neon colors and fight choreography made me think of the video for Lone Digger by Caravan Palace except this has anime wolves and that one had realistic-ish cats. Also less pole dancing.

Speaking of the wolves, I didn’t really get a full grasp of the plot on the first viewing (maybe because I was distracted by all the colors and practically flawless transitions), but on my second watch I understood the story a lot more and I really liked the wolf characters! I would’ve liked for them to be fleshed out a little more individually (I assume the one that died at the beginning was like the main boy’s brother or something? And the bleeding eye one was the girl’s boyfriend or brother or whatever? I don’t know I’m just speculating), but I get that there’s only so much you can do in a four minute music video. Besides, the story to me kinda takes a backseat to the visuals anyway. 

I know I keep mentioning the visuals but how can I not?! This video is so well animated and colored and composited and I live for that retro 80s/90s sci-fi aesthetic and the character designs are so cool and GOD it was all so beautifully done!!

And have I mentioned the song yet? I haven’t? Well that’s a shame cause the song is equally amazing! I think I actually either missed this song completely when it first came out or heard it once and just kinda forgot about it, but I’m sorry I did that cause this song is really good! I think it fits really well with the tone and style of the video. Dan’s vocals are gorgeous as always and the instrumental is great too (especially that last part)!

I’m really looking forward to hearing about the behind the scenes stuff on the story and how this was animated because everybody who worked on this is so crazy talented and I love them!

Avoid v necks and tight clothing. This will only make your chest appear smaller and flatter. That is NOT what we are going for. A few other non clothing tricks are to practice good posture. This will push your chest out and shoulders back giving you a larger chest. There are clips you can get to turn your bra straps into a sports bra style or racerback style. Doing this pushes the breasts together and up.

Now lets talk talk about how to mask those breasts if you’re wanting to appear more masculine. Binders are the best course of action these are tighter than sports bras and their job is to flatten and smooth for short periods of time. Now be very careful. Do not make your own, layer, or tape your chest in any way. This can cause serious damage. Damage from doing this could leave you disfigured or impair your eligibility to get top surgery if you decide. Respect your body and its limits. Alter it healthily and safely.

Israel Adesanya Steals the Show at UFC 230

For the downhearted, pessimistic fight fan, UFC 230 was exactly what the doctor ordered. The main event was largely a formality as Daniel Cormier met with no difficulty in manhandling Derrick Lewis and Lewis showed nothing new or clever or even made an attempt at some kind of Hail Mary play. But in spite of the shoddy main event, and succeeding the UFC 229 mega-fight between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, UFC 230 excelled as an ensemble piece with quality fights up and down the card, a perfect cocktail of bloody brawls and slick science.

Elbows and Cuts

On the undercard Sheymon Moraes and Julio Arce fought a three round battle with both men forced to blink a generous splashing of Arce’s blood out of their eyes throughout. Moraes was able to thread his right hand down the center of the southpaw Arce’s guard whenever the latter jabbed. After being dropped in this way in the first round, Arce got the clinch and doggedly pursued the back, showing us something new in the UFC in the process. Struggling to drag Moraes hips off the fence in order expose his back, Arce stepped into the fence and climbed his left knee across behind Arce to advance his back take.

The fight became a good deal more frantic when a Moraes elbow threatened a cut stoppage. Moraes connected numerous elbows throughout the fight, but it was the least solid connection that produced a laceration which drenched both men with blood for the next ten minutes. Here is the paradox of elbow strikes: good connections can cause a knockout, but glancing ones often cause the most gnarly wounds.

Arce was knocked down a couple of times by that right straight down the inside of his jab, but when he hit the mat his guard was something unusual. Moraes is a very competent grappler and top player, but Arce wound up defending his head by repeatedly performing a small half-granby to bring his hips back in front of Moraes, putting himself on his shoulders in the process. Being stacked on your shoulders is usually a less than ideal situation, but Moraes seemed able to deflect a great many blows on his hamstrings and calves. In fact when Moraes got overeager dropping punches on this stacked posture in the first round, he was dragged into a reverse triangle choke attempt that bought Arce time to regain his composure.

Moraes won a close decision, but neither man came out looking bad. If Arce takes anything from this fight it should be that his jab is a little bit too easy to read: fully committed and rarely feinted.

The Jailbreak Escape

Any Jason Knight fight is a guarantee of a good scrap, but Jordan Rinaldi proved just a little too much for him. Knight didn’t seemed to lose largely due to his comfort on his back, locking himself to the mat as he attempted to play rubber guard instead of working to return to his feet. However Knight often did well re-establishing guard once Rinaldi had passed. Often Knight looked to perform what is called a jailbreak escape: inserting the far side foot as a butterfly hook and using it to drive the opponent back to behind both butterfly hooks. This can be done as B.J. Penn used it, using the legs alone to insert the hook, or with the aid of one of the arms as Knight did here.

Eddie Bravo used this same escape in his famous grappling match with Royler Gracie—flowing directly from the escape into a butterfly guard sweep attempt and then a triangle choke which won him the match.

Knight’s attempt at the same escape in the second round was met with a counter. When a fighter passes the near side arm underneath his opponent (in this case Knights’ right arm) he also removes a block stopping his opponent from walking around him to north-south position. When Knight’s hand shot underneath Rinaldi to insert his hook, Rinaldi walked around to north-south and began working on a kimura attempt. When Knight attempted to turn to his knees, Rinaldi span to his back.

A Career Resurgence

The success story of the card was Jared Cannonier. This writer has had Cannonier saved away for a future “biggest what ifs of MMA” article, as the Alaskan continued to look sharp on the feet but gas out early against the big names he met. Cannonier gave Glover Teixeira hell on the feet in their bout, while working a full time job at the airport and lacking world class coaches and sparring partners. Now Cannonier, once a heavyweight, is at the MMA Lab in Arizona and has transformed himself into a middleweight.

Cannonier came in at short notice to fight Dave Branch, replacing Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, a smothering grappler. After shucking off Branch’s takedown attempts, the svelte Cannonier showed a new wrinkle to his game as he pursued Branch along the fence: throwing up a wheel kick to intercept Branch as he circled!

The end came as Branch failed on another takedown, becoming increasingly frustrated, and threw a right hand on the break. Cannonier’s own right hand landed considerably harder and Branch was quickly TKOed.

Cannonier’s cardio hasn’t always been sturdy and often a big cut to get down another weight class will leave a fighter with even less in the tank, yet Cannonier looked surprisingly fresh after shucking off Branch’s dogged takedown attempts. Hopefully Cannonier has found the right team and weightclass to start fighting up to his potential.

Weidman Vs. Jacare

Chris Weidman put in a typical Weidman performance as he started the fight by outclassing Souza with jabs and long right hands, then hung around more and more to be hit by the Brazilian’s big right hand and was finally stopped in the third round. Weidman’s jab looked brilliant through the early going, wherein he used a stuttering jab—pumping the arm half into extension, pausing, and then completing the extension off-rhythm—to perplex the rather rigid Jacare.

In the early going Weidman’s performance against Souza was quite similar to Robert Whittaker’s. Whittaker used the jab well and was constantly on the lookout for Jacare’s double leg and the counter right hand. Both Weidman and Whittaker would lead and then step out to their right or roll down behind their lead shoulder as Jacare returned.

Jacare proved a little smarter than usual though and after struggling with the jab for a while he began to push forward and get to the body with left hooks. As Jacare is often an almost exclusively right handed hitter this was something of a surprise.

The left hook to the body paired nicely with the right front snap kick to the body that Jacare has always liked, and gradually the wind left Weidman’s sails. By the end of the fight Weidman was standing flat footed with Jacare, trading, and soon ate a right hand that put him down for the TKO.

The Wonderful Mr. Adesanya

The most notable performance of the night came from Israel Adesanya who has emphatically established himself as one of the elite in the middleweight division. Derek Brunson is a sloppy and wild fighter technically, but a very strong wrestler and a knockout puncher as well, so this was easily the stiffest test of Adesanya’s career. Brunson came out with his trademark aggression, attempting to smother Adesanya along the fence, but with less of the all-out recklessness of his fights with Robert Whittaker or Sam Alvey. Adesanya didn’t get the chance to strike for most of the fight and instead had to fight off takedowns for several minutes, and he was almost flawless in doing it.

On one break from the clinch, Adesanya ran along the cage and rebounded off the fence with a knee as Brunson stepped in.This is something Adesanya used to do in his kickboxing career, and while we have only spoken about Adesanya in passing we did discuss his use of a rebounding knee to the midsection against Ryan Thomas in Glory.

But where Thomas caught a knee to the bread basket, Brunson was running face first for the takedown and took the brunt of the strike on the chin.

The beautiful striking science that is Adesanya’s main selling point was only on display for a few seconds against Brunson, but even then you got to see the classic Adesanya principles. A low-to-high question mark kick wobbled Brunson, and the finishing sequence showed Adesanya hiding his stance switches amid offensive and defense movements. This is how you surprise an opponent with the new looks of a change of stance—you make sure they don’t see the change until you’re ready to attack out of it.

Here Adesanya weaves from his southpaw stance to an orthodox one, cracks Brunson with a right straight, then switches again to land a long left hook from a southpaw stance. Any Adesanya match is full of stance switches which go largely unnoticed as he hides them so well in transition.

While Brunson is not a great scientific fighter, his raw skills have been enough to get him into the middleweight top ten before. Certainly as Adesanya meets savvier fighters, who aren’t such an open book regarding their intentions and can adapt throughout a fight, we will get a better read on his potential, but Brunson is an excellent name to have on any middleweight record.

I think it would be useful to have a national system or program that one could enter if one isn’t cis so as to make transitioning easier when it comes to financial and governmental matters. Because as it is, most companies or government agencies that have to verify your identity don’t have a way to change one’s gender from what the “public record” shows. And especially if you had an account or presence in the group as a child, it can be difficult if not impossible to communicate that your gender has changed.

You might ask why your bank or some government agency needs to know your gender and/or sex. There are a few good reasons, but the most important one is security. I work at a financial institution’s call center. People call in pretending to be accountholders all the time & a big red flag is when the caller’s voice doesn’t seem to match the accountholder’s gender. Just ignoring this red flag could cause a lot of fraud, especially since wives/girlfriends call in on their husband/boyfriends’ accounts all the time & have all of their info. 

But at the same time, many people who are transitioning will sound different than their gender on file would suggest. And it can make their lives very difficult if they can’t conduct business because we don’t think they’re male or we have no way to confirm they’re now a woman. Some states can change people’s genders on their driver’s licenses & other documents, but it can still take a while for everything on file for the company to reflect the change. 

And since there’s no existing procedure at most companies for how to confirm the person has changed their gender, some fraud can occur. I actually spoke to a woman one time who claimed to be an accountholder - let’s call him John Doe - who recently transitioned into a woman. She went so far as to visit a branch office with John Doe’s driver’s license (which may or may not have been updated to reflect her new gender), so we changed Mister to Miss. Some time later, the financial institution I work for somehow found out Mr. Doe is actually in jail serving for several more months. The woman had pretended to be him & pretended he was transitioning so she could take over the accounts. If it turns out the driver’s license was changed as well, she even defrauded the DMV & possibly other government agencies.

Ultimately, I don’t know how a database of who is transitioning could be created with a minimal risk of fraud. Obviously, it couldn’t be based on whether the individual underwent sex reassignment surgery, since not all trans people do. It would necessarily be self-reported, but to prevent fraud, there would have to be plenty of required documents to confirm the person’s identity. The database could send a notice to any participating companies or government agencies that the individual is no longer [insert gender here]. To make things simpler, it might be best to not state what the new gender is; just that they aren’t a man or woman, since that’s most likely what an existing public record would say. 

Naturally, the database would either have to be introduced alongside or after a federal law preventing any businesses & government agencies from discriminating against trans people. Otherwise, companies who wanted to discriminate could sign up for the database to know who to avoid. It could also be set up so that companies could only get a notification for an employee if they transitioned during their employment with the company, not prior. 

I’m not saying this is a flawless system or anything, since I didn’t make one & I spent maybe 15 minutes on this post, but it’s something to consider.
