while this type of event isn't steph's scene, she's grown somewhat used to it after attending too many a few wayne galas. she's extroverted enough to make conversation with the guests, but ultimately too outspoken for their fancy taste. no matter. she busies herself with plucking as much finger food as she can, while making faces to damian from across the room. he hates it, which makes for the perfect distraction from an otherwise dull night.

she does catch whispers of some relationship drama floating around the room. something about mr. deschamps and his assistant, steph manages to make out from a hushed conversation between two ladies passing by. small potatoes compared to the kind of gossip she's used to hearing - batman sneaking around with zaun's most fearsome thief, or dick's neverending list of flings.

just as she's entertaining the idea of bailing and heading for the roof, she notices ella deschamps chatting with one of bruce's acquaintances. well, chatting would be generous. it's more him talking her ear off, while ella looks like she'd rather be literally anywhere else. it's not her place. they've only exchanged quick pleasantries in the past, and steph's not sure her help would even be welcome or appreciated.

-- not that that's ever stopped her before.

she makes an entrance with an absurd joke, surely unrelated to whatever it was they were talking about. the two guests look equally confused. ella tries to offer a genuine answer, while the man seems more offended steph would even bring up something so unseemly. 'ridiculous! there would not be broth at such a place', he spits out in an annoyed tone.

"well, i wouldn't know." steph shrugs, barely hiding her pleased smile as she holds the man's gaze. "but glad you're so knowledgeable on the matter, mr...?" she starts, raising an expectant brow. her jab works just as planned, steph realizes as she watches as his face grows red and he stomps away angrily, unwilling to tie his name to such a preposterous topic.

"it was an honest question." she pretends to be offended by his outburst, but the knowing smile on her lips gives it away. steph turns to ella, ready to brave small talk for the sake of helping the other feel more at ease. "oh, stephanie's fine." she brushes off the title right away, waving a hand. "i've been... great." better to keep it vague than to get into details she's not supposed to disclose - like how her right side still aches from a fight with the penguin's goons two nights ago.

"and you, ms. deschamps? i hope you don't mind me stepping in like that. i just figured you needed a rescue."

Isrieal tilts her head at him, whatever his explanation was it had better be a good one and not just another Fuhito trying to steal secrets for their own work. She lifts a brow while he runs his fingers through his hair, waiting. At least he wasn't just ready to throw it all in her face.

Her eyes widen as he starts to speak of Jenova and its dangers. Every last concern that she has had for these past years. "I'm listening..." She takes a seat on the opposite side of his desk to let him finish. It was nothing she didn't know, nothing she didn't already try to warn people about and the reason for most of her frequent arguments and screaming matches with Hojo.

Once he finishes she sits there in silence for a long moment, staring down at her interlaced fingers. "How are you going to stop something that has already started?" She asks while meeting his eyes. "The Promised land is all a lie and this thing isn't an Ancient. He knows that now." She says with a laugh. "It's not about that anymore. It's about pushing the possibilities of human limitation, about creating something new for the sake of being able to do it. But just because you could doesn't mean that you should." She says with a shrug.

"Luck is not even the best word for me." She looks away. "I don't know anything of who I was before this. All I know is what I am supposed to be and that I'm not even sure of. A walking replication of her, something new. All I am is whatever he wants me to be." She traces her fingertip in circles on the desk.

"And to be honest I hate Jenova more than anything. I always have. Whatever it truly is. It is worse than you can even imagine. It's not just the Soldiers that will suffer, its all of us. You have to admit things have been different ever since he moved that damn thing here. People acting crazier, more irritable, the insane ideas the Heads are coming up with. It's all its influence, the suffocating miasma that permeates its surroundings. Bringing it here was the worst idea ever and nothing will get through to the Professor. I have tried and tried again."

She slides her nails along the surface of the desk and grasps onto the edge. "I have seen things. Visions that cause me to believe that even this very building will one day cease to stand. And the worst of it?! Watching that madness slowly consume him, its madness. Sure he has always been ...different. But it was never this bad. You don't know the half of what he is doing in that Drum regardless what documents you pulled, and the worst of it is knowing that I can't do a damn thing to stop it! To save him. I know the inevitable end, and I just have to slowly watch it all fade away." She clenches her jaw as she tries to keep herself composed.

She closes her eyes and breathes in a deep breath. "So if there is a way to stop it, to destroy it then you tell me. Tell me something I have not already tried."
