The Oleksandr Koshytsia Choir, 1922. It was them who introduced “Shchedryk” to America.
Its haunting melody was later adapted into the popular “Carol of the Bells” in English, making it a Christmas classic worldwide.

Does anyone who speaks Ukrainian and needs an opportunity to procrastinate on something want to help a person with abysmally bad listening comprehension to find out what exactly he's singing?
I have a little series of blog posts with songs about the Khmelnytsky uprising, and this one has been waiting in my drafts for months because I haven't found a written version of the lyrics, and no matter how often I listen to it, I just don't understand more than the very beginning:
Ой, Богдане, батьку Хмелю, славний наш гетьмане! Стала наша Україна…
and that was it, basically.
From there on, all I have is single words: Запорожжя … військовий (or just військо and the ви is already part of the next word?) … старий батько …  Корсунь і Черкаси … (Богдан again?) ... козацтва …?
Which, unfortunately, is a bit sparse. But the song also sounds too amazing to resign myself to the fact that I just don't understand it and have to leave it out of the collection - so if anyone has time and motivation to write down what they hear...?

One of Putin's goals with his illegal invasion of Ukraine was to extend the cultural influence of the Russian world. That has been a bigger failure than his military disaster.
Ukraine's language situation is complex. But about 20% of the population is primarily Russian speaking and a majority of the population can understand Russian – a legacy of Soviet imperialism.
Russia used to be a major source of music. That changed bigtime in February of 2022. Putin has unintentionally created a boom in Ukrainian music.
Prior to February 2022, YouTube’s rankings in Ukraine were overwhelmed by Russian-language songs, which occupied up to 75% of top chart positions. Ukrainian-language music struggled for visibility, making up just 10% of the weekly top 100. But in the months since Russia’s assault began, homegrown Ukrainian acts have rapidly overturned this imbalance. They now account for 65% of YouTube’s top slots in the country, while Russian musicians have been largely purged from the charts, Ekonomichna Pravda writes.

січня = January квітень = April липень = July жовтень = October
The war appears to have enriched Ukrainian performers financially as well. Best Music, a Ukrainian publishing company, reported one its top artists earning 248% more from streaming services in the third quarter of 2022 compared to 2021. Other leading singers saw quarterly streaming revenues in the $18,000 range.
Russian language and culture have taken it on the chin in most parts of the world – but especially in Ukraine.
In Ukraine, you can now officially write Russia and words related to it in lower case.
Ukraine Allows Russia-Related Words To Be Written In All Lowercase
So presumably your Ukrainian spell checker won't ding you if you type росія instead of Росія (Russia), путін instead of Путін (Putin), or москва instead of Москва (Moscow).
Putin is doing for Ukrainian culture what he's also done for NATO.

Vyriy
[transcription into eng - 'vıri:j - stress on the 1st syllable] - is an old, untranslatable Ukrainian word going down to the pre-Kievan Rus times. Eastern Slavs believed there's an unreachable for mortals land, always warm and fertile and peaceful, and that it's to that land birds fly away to when winter comes... and where souls of our dead ones go - this is Vyriy.
To this day, we associate birds flying away to warm countries during winter with souls of our dead leaving this world - this belief is literally millenia old.
youtube
Lyrics:
Do not hide in me Let the fires guide you Everything that throbs, that festers in the soul Letting go, letting go - fly. Your path leads through distance and time Fly away as a white bird, fly away! To where earth meets the sun, go. Start a twirling dance with the stars, Tell them about my dreams. Let the echo of my song reach them With the voice of storks and winds. Tell them not to idle, not to wait for spring, Invite them, invite them into my dreams Your path leads through distance and time Fly away as a white bird, fly away! To where earth meets the sun, go. Start a twirling dance with the stars, Tell them about my dreams.

Я сьогодні для себе таке відкриття зробила ,під цю пісню мотивація щось робити просто до небес. Кліп бомба ,одяг теж. Хочеться купити колонку і чисто з цією піснею ходити по місту.

OK, I know I've mentioned this guy before, but for the sake of keeping Ukrainian music alive, I would again like to recommend the band Orion's Belt, a project of Ukrainian-born Andriy Matviychuk, who now works as the creative director for UK video game developer Tripledot Studios. If you're a fan of 70s/80s space disco, you'll love Orion's Belt.
