Some days ago i watched ROTB and these are my thoughts about it

When i went to watch it I wasn’t really hyped and my expectations weren’t high, especially after reading some reviews and because i was afraid it would be similar to Bay's TF movies. Hopefully I was wrong, kinda.

While watching it I felt like it was a Fanfiction wrote by someone that is still learning how to write emotions and wants to surprise the audience at all costs. As others already said, it feels like they tried to mix Bayverse with Knightverse (but they kinda failed 'cause all the emotions felt flat, idk how to explain this). But still, I liked they at least tried to do so.

The good thing is that this film has an understandable plot and doesn’t look like a random pile of stuff put together. Another good thing is that the female characters aren’t sexualised and are an active part in the story (except for the end, i'll talk about it later)

The humans characters were good, enjoyable. The problem? Too many interactions between them and few between the Autobots. When they were going to Peru and Noah and Elena started talking it took to long, I expected Optimus and Arcee to have a convo about Bee but they exchanged like two words??? It's a film about Transformers, please make them interact between each other for more than 5 minutes.

For Optimus they should have listened to the "Show don’t tell" thing. At least he's a personality in this film (no, killing decepticons isn't a personality, sorry Bay)

I still don’t understand why they changed Wheeljack alt mode. He did nothing. Also why they give him that accent? I love Spanish accent but It doesn’t fit his character.

Elena disappeared during the final battle. They gave us a lot of Noah and Mirage and left Elena in the shadows. I really like her character, maybe we'll see more of her in the next movie.

We all agree that there was something between Elena and Airazor, right? They would have been great friends, but they decided to kill Airazor (whose death was kinda meh).

When Bee died I was took by surprise, same for when Mirage became an armour (really cool).

Noah has been inside Mirage for half the movie, when the movie ended me and my friend screamed "OMG THEY ARE A COUPLE". They want us to ship them is the only reasonable explanation to Mirage's joke.

I'm sorry but Chris speech near the end felt forced, it would have been better if it were Elena to give it.

Why did GI Joe office had so many maps of Italy??? (I know nothing about Gi JOE)

The part at the museum when Noah and Elena got hunted was kinda meh. All the film was to fast. They should have made battles less long and gave more time to the rest of the scenes.

Quoting my other friend who watched the film with me, "Scourge is cool" and "Mirage is that type of person that is funny but that you'd punch after two hours spent with him" (but we still love him)

Optimus is a Tired dad, tired big brother, with homesickness. He's so done with Mirage and Bee. Arcee is the elder daughter/second child.

I enjoyed watching Optimus getting K.O. by Scourge.

This movie is not perfect but is way better than those by Bay, I think this new continuity is going in the right direction. Maybe the next one will be memorable, who knows.

Maybe I'll rewatch it in original language.

my vote is 7/10, Bumblebee is still in first place.

Does anyone else want to challenge Krista Vernoff to a duel at dawn for the crimes she committed against humanity? I take everything she did to japril very personally, and I will take my hatred to my grave!

I have a strong feeling that she decided to delete the japriet scene in 13x01 that we only got to see in promo pics.

She tried to villainize April's character and distance her from all of the other characters in season 13.

She deliberately created a rift between japril (using the Minnick situation and the storyline about Catherine taking April under her wing).

She made japril's reunion in Montana seem like it meant nothing.

She made April tell Jackson that she wanted to move out of his house in season 14 and tried to make it seem like April was angry at him until Sarah requested for her demeanor in that scene to be changed.

She paired Jesse, Sarah's scene partner of 6 years, with Kelly, who's one of Sarah's closest friends from the cast.

She made Maggie save April in 14x23, and expected the fans to start liking her and ship jaggie (as if lol).

She had the audacity to title 14x24 (Sarah's final episode on Grey's at the time), as "All Of Me", which is the title of a song that was played in an iconic japril scene.

She made April date Matthew, who is a public enemy of the japril fandom. The least she could've done was bring in a new/decent guy for April. But she was like, "oh no, let's have her be with the person she left at the altar, and try to negate the years that April spent with Jackson."

She made April get married to Matthew in front of Jackson (which later ended up being a plot device for Jackson to realize his feelings for April, but I bet a thousand bucks that it wasn't intended to have a positive impact on japril in the future).

She made April give up her career as a trauma surgeon.

And the worst one of them all is the way Sasse have been directed in japril scenes after she became in charge of running the show.

The directors have tried to mess with most of the fundamental attributes of japril to make them seem platonic. You can clearly see that when you watch their scenes starting season 13. Jesse looks like he's holding himself back, and Sarah is trying to work with the direction to the best of her abilities. The only time they seemed like japril was in 13x16 (Kevin McKkid directed the ep so he probably didn't torture them with notes cause he's really nice). And Sarah and Jesse saved the rest of their scenes in season 16 (both before and after 13x16) with their subtle body language.

Then they tried to make japril seem platonic in 17x14, the episode that was supposed to give us closure. We all know that Krista wanted to keep April married to Matthew, and Sasse fought to change the script to leave a possibility for a japril endgame, plus they even improvised the japril handhold and hug.

And don't even get me started on the way April was treated by the other characters in 18x20. Only Amelia, Ben, and Bailey were polite to her (I'm not counting the Averys since they're practically April's family). Owen didn't even acknowledge her properly (I know that he was going through stuff, but in 12x24 April literally got stranded in Mere's house in the middle of a storm, and had to have a c-section without anesthesia because she went to look for his wedding ring, but she doesn't even get a proper hello?) The way Mere reacted to April's greeting is how Krista wants to treat Sarah (I said what I said). Even Ellen Pompeo has more class than Krista. Plus they cut one of April’s scenes with Catherine.

And then we find out that one version of their scene in 18x20 was cut. I bet you anything that the one that aired was also edited down to make it as short as it could be. Jesse didn't fly to LA from NY, and Sarah didn't make an entire film production halt their work in Canada, to shoot scenes of japril eulogizing Catherine (who's very much still alive), and having random convos with people about the hospital. The only substantial scene for japril, other than the one in the elevator, was April's scene with Amelia. Sasse must have expected so much more from that episode, just like we did. And that makes me so sad.

All of this for what? To take something away from two actors who loved working together, and break the hearts of millions of fans who found happiness in shipping this amazing couple? How sad do you have to be to actively try to ruin other people's happiness?

Post-hiatus C2, and the Great Retcon... 

(The retconning really started with the playlists, but we’ll come back to those.)

First, some context:

SDCC (July ‘18) - Marisha was asked directly about Beau and Yasha and if she and Ashley had discussed it. “After the first few times that I kinda put the moves on her, we were at break, and I could sense that Ashley was wanting to ask me something. And she was like, ‘Hey, I’m just curious... is Beau- ’ And at that exact moment someone’s like, ‘Yo Ashley! We gotta go! We gotta get on stage!’ And I was like, ‘Bye!’” Then Brian asked, “And you haven’t had a further conversation about it?” Marisha said, “Nope!”

(Seven months into the campaign, and no discussions. Hmm.)

NYCC (Oct. ‘18) - Marisha was asked about who would Beau get flustered over if they ever flirted back, and yes, she said Yasha and laughed, but then said, “It’s like throwing pebbles at a brick wall.” Meaning, she was putting stuff out there and not getting anything back. (And, she really wasn’t. I still remember when a major portion of the fandom, including the diehard shippers [of which I was one at the time], weren’t sure if Ashley was even interested in this. More than that, it wasn’t until the Zuala reveal, that the fandom and the players found out for certain that Yasha was actually into women.) 

(To me, Marisha’s answer here also suggests that at this point, there were still no discussions.)

Talks Machina for ep61 (May ‘19) - Marisha was asked ‘What was going through Beau's mind when Yasha revealed her past with Zuala? Has this changed any feelings Beau might have? Or has Beau's character growth allowed her to mature a little more with regards to her feelings about Yasha?’ Which Marisha instantly pegged as a shipping question. And she said, “I’m trying to figure out a way to answer this to not ruin everyone’s internal canon, in their brains. I don’t want people to overestimate Beau’s intentions towards Yasha. But then also, is that on me? Have I been leading everybody on?”

So, you had all of that, all the way up to ep61.

None of this indicates that ‘it’s been happening since ep1′ or that it’s ‘the slowest of slow burns.’ In fact, it shuts that down completely.

Moving forward to the Beau and Fjord convo (ep108)...

Marisha suddenly having Beau say “There was something about Yasha from the moment that I saw her”. She’s retrospectively attempting to give that moment more weight, when (based on the examples above) we know that the over-the-top flirting was just for fun. And truthfully, she really wasn’t flirting with Yasha any differently than she was flirting with any hot female NPC the party crossed paths with.

And now it’s clear that that one line she said is the reason why BY shippers have suddenly clung on to the idea that “It’s been happening since episode one! SLOooOowBuUuuUrn!!!!!” when its clear that it was not planned. (Not before the hiatus-from-hell, anyway.)

Then Marisha having Beau go from describing Jester as “She's fun. She makes me laugh. I like her ridiculous plans. I think she's complicated and layered.” to “It’s easy to lust after her”. I’ll direct you to Talks for ep85. After Marisha had mentioned that it was a bunch of little things that build, and then pinpointed a few of them, Brian tried to make a joke and said “So you’re saying it’s been more a series, than just one moment that you can point to and say ‘It was right here when I went, let’s fuck!’” Marisha specifically countered that with “It’s not even about 'let’s fuck’. It’s nothing sexual in this case.” (Having her backpedal on this so heavily was such a huge gut punch and was the thing that wholly soured everything for me.)

There were so many better, more delicate ways Marisha could’ve had Beau examine/come to grips with her feelings for both women, but all the reduction and saying they were ‘transferable’ was nothing short of insulting.

On that same Talks episode, Marisha also said this: “Going into this campaign all of us were like, ‘No relationships!’ I didn’t want it! I didn’t ask for this!”, while smiling. What this shows me is that she was thinking of a relationship in regards to Beau’s feelings for Jester. As if she was maybe even anticipating this culminating into something? Why even mention relationships at all if this was nothing serious and was always meant to fall by the wayside?

Brian then followed up with, “In my opinion, as a viewer, Beau’s someone who seems to be on the search for innocence. Whether innocence lost or just innocence in general. And to me it makes sense that you would be attracted to someone who exudes genuine and sort of intrinsic innocence.” Marisha replied with “Fairly astute.”

The next question was, ‘Beau has taken a pretty casual, no-strings-attached approach toward sex and relationships so far. How do her feelings for Jester compare to her previous romantic flings?’ Marisha answered immediately and very seriously with, “Noncomparable. It’s more than that.” She wasn’t playing coy and it didn’t take her a century to find the words. She didn’t even have to think about it. Succinct and direct.

How did all of that ‘organically’ disappear completely, after only 14 episodes?

(Everything felt more genuine back then, because it seemed like Marisha was going where the character was taking her, and not where she thought the character should be going.)

Post-hiatus, everyone and their mother are acting like BY is some epic romance-of-the-ages that was all mapped out, and like Beau having feelings for Jester was just some sort of temporary curveball. That Beau was confused, or was just missing Yasha and projected onto Jester. 

That’s really fucked up no matter how you try to justify it. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen another piece of media backpedal this hard, and this callously.

None of that squares with what we were shown or with what we were told. Until, everybody made a hard pivot and now they've done (and continue to) do everything they can to rewrite campaign history, even though we have plenty of footage that contradicts the new ‘company line’.

Now, where the retconning truly began, with the playlists...

Remember the first round of playlists? Those were released randomly, whenever the cast felt like posting them. I also don’t remember there being announcements every time one came out either.

This time though, they had a fixed schedule, complete with official twitter announcements. As they started to just get back into the swing of things, Yasha’s playlist was released right after the first episode back.

So, right out of the gate, they had to make sure they started to drill home a certain mindset for viewers. That’s why Yasha had a song called ‘Let Me Hold You’. (Lo and behold, a few episodes in, Beau randomly asks Yasha to hold her.)  A few weeks later, Beau’s playlist was released, and there was a song with the caption saying ‘Ultimately, all she really wants is someone to hold, and someone to hold her’. (But sure, no planning here! The wording is just a total coincidence, folks!)  

The other song, directly about Yasha, mentions ‘a crush forged in battle’ (ok), and ‘awkward flirtations’ (???). Yasha never openly flirted with Beau before the hiatus, until maybe right after the Obann arc, in a very vague way.

On Beau’s playlist, there’s nothing about Jester. The one track that mentions her is actually about Artagan. Which, after all they’ve been through together, is fucking ridiculous no matter how you slice it.

In addition to that, Marisha had made Beau’s time in Kamordah (ep92/e93), and the incidents with her family and the Hag, about the group now, not about Jester, fully contradicting her own reiterated words that ‘Jester saved Beau’.

When Beau was talking to her dad, reverting back to her old self and getting all riled up, Jester helped her in that moment, and saved her. Yes, the group was very supportive, and yes, Yasha said something to him before they left the house (that Beau was out of earshot for by the way), but Jester was Beau’s rock throughout that whole thing. 

With the Hag, when the group was having a hard time coming up with a solution, and they realized they might actually lose Beau, Jester stepped up and took control of the situation. She, single-handedly, saved Beau/the group from the Hag. And with that, Jester also became Beau’s hero.

In both instances, Marisha thanked Laura/Jester. First on Talks for ep92 with both of them on it. She reiterated, “You saved me. You saved Beau.” Then on Twitter after ep93 with, “Still processing last night. Saved by a cupcake? Eh - saved by @LauraBaileyVO ... again.” 

But now suddenly, it’s the group. Just the group? 

Now, don’t get me wrong. The entire party showing Beau support was incredibly important. The M9 showed her that they value her, that she’s important to them. It solidified the theme of ‘found family’, which was beautiful. But, to not also highlight how crucial Jester was in all of this, after making such a big deal about it? 

That is very deliberate retconning of some hugely important, highly emotional moments for Beau that directly involved Jester.

Any of Beau’s organic and genuine connection with Jester (which encompasses their deep friendship as well as Beau’s romantic feelings) has been massively reduced (and now erased), specifically to prop up a supposed ‘deep’ connection with someone else that was barely ever there, is still barely there, and has no actual depth at all.

Case in point, the BY date (ep126) showcased this fact to the most extreme degree...

Yasha’s infamous line: “I fell in love with you in Kamordah.” So, Yasha literally watched Beau relive her childhood trauma, and caught feelings during it. I’m not wrong in thinking that that’s just a little disturbing, am I? Also, if that’s the moment she supposedly fell for her, why did she not offer her any form of help? I mean, besides that one sweet moment with TJ, the entire time Beau was in Kamordah, she was the most broken down she’d ever been and needed some real comfort, which is something Yasha did not give her. (Jester did though. In spades.)

So, on multiple levels, this seems highly out-of-place. 

Several people have said that that line was not thought through. In my opinion, it actually was thought through and was only said specifically to have viewers completely dismiss everything else that happened in the Kamordah episodes. Despite the FACT that Beau and Yasha barely interacted during those episodes, they have now stripped down the party’s experience there, and twisted it into a giant BY shipping moment. (Further feeding into the retcon.)

Their ‘trip down memory lane’ was laughable. Most of the things that were mentioned, Yasha wasn’t even around for. 

Gee, remember when the cast was actually good at separating what they knew from what their character knew? When you start injecting what you know into your character (who isn’t supposed to know, because they literally were not physically there), you are metagaming. 

The entire date was one big metagaming bonanza. And it had to be, or else they would’ve had nothing to talk about. There is not one thing they have to call their own. To people who don’t have BY tunnel vision, it was made glaringly obvious that they have nothing in common and their dynamic is fairly shallow. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast are sitting there watching this unfold, smiling and nodding along as if it all makes perfect sense and isn’t utterly ridiculous. (And I’m sitting here wondering when I got shunted into the Twilight Zone.)

The shallowness holds true for FJ as well. Aside from both of them being from the Menagerie Coast, what exactly do they have in common?

While Fjord has grown as a character, as far as Jester goes, he still does not seem to have the capacity to fully understand her as a person, or fully respect her abilities/emotional strength/intelligence. He doubted her often, which led to Jester getting irritated with him several times over the course of at least the last third of the pre-hiatus episodes. He even continued to doubt her judgment (in regards to the Traveler) in the post-hiatus Rumblecusp episodes. But hey, they’ve kissed now (ep118) so all of that gets wiped clean, and he’s being touted as her ultimate romantic soulmate who’s oh-so-perfect for her.

For fuck’s sake, why does that sound like something pulled right out of a CW show?

(I'm convinced that the only reason FJ is ‘popular’ is because the shippers have projected Travis and Laura’s real-life marriage onto the characters. If Fjord and Jester were played by different people, or Travis and Laura were not together, people would realize how paper-thin and half-assed this pairing is and hardly anyone would care about it.) 

Beau and Jester had developed the deepest, most genuine friendship and overall dynamic in the entire party, that should have absolutely been given the chance to be explored further. They constructed a pretty solid foundation that could have easily been built upon, and the fact that it’s been unceremoniously pulverized and snuffed out in favor of such overwhelming tepidity and flavorlessness will never not infuriate me.

Finally, to finish this off, I will say with my whole chest, that that is one of many nasty, rotten patterns that I’ve seen far too much of in all kinds of scripted media, which is...

Not wanting to commit to the thing that’s actually growing organically, because it’ll ruffle too many feathers. It’s too inconvenient. It gets in the way. Because of course, nobody wants to do that. Nobody wants to take a risk, or you know, actually follow where the natural fucking chemistry is taking you. Of course not! Heaven forbid, we go down a different road! You have to go with what’s ‘expected’, no matter what, at the great expense of something new that’s come along that’s clearly better. Even when what’s expected is hollow as fuck and doesn’t make sense anymore, because characters have grown and dynamics have changed, they decide to dig their heels in with the most fanservice-y options instead.

Yet this is UNSCRIPTED media. A D&D campaign, that’s supposed to be mostly improvised. D&D, that’s all about taking chances/going with your gut/making bold choices/etc., from people who have claimed up and down that they “like to see things play out at the table”.

So why are those same disingenuous patterns being utilized here too?

One of the big reasons I got into CR was because I naively believed that because the format was different, that the storytelling would be different. I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about running into this nonsense here. That I wouldn’t have to worry about getting bullshitted, jerked around, and having my intelligence insulted left and right, but alas, here we are.

In conclusion...  [TL;DR, kinda?]

Reframing past events (between B & J, and B & Y) to serve a current plot need (railroading BY):                                                                                      

Beau playlist ignores Jester’s importance to what transpired in Kamordah. (minimizing/erasure)

Beau playlist doesn’t acknowledge/hint at Beau’s feelings for Jester. (total erasure. could have at least included a song about feelings being lost, or being confused about feelings for a friend, but Marisha took the cowardly route, and didn’t bother mentioning it at all.)

Beau playlist claims that Beau and Yasha have both been flirting forever. (easily debunked by session footage.)

In her conversation with Fjord, Beau says, “There was something about Yasha from the moment I saw her”. (it was just about hooking up then, and stayed that way for a majority of the campaign. This line suggests that Beau has had ‘deeper feelings’ for and/or has been ‘in love’ with Yasha since the first episode, that this was all intentional build-up, which again, is easily debunked by session footage, panels, and TM.)

In her conversation with Fjord, Beau says, “It’s easy to lust after her.” (minimizing/erasure/twisting of Beau’s feelings for Jester, which Marisha had previously stated were ‘noncomparable’ , ‘more than that’, and that her attraction is ‘nothing sexual in this case.’)

This isn’t a fucking conspiracy theory. This is plain evidence of a planned retcon.

Could you please summarize the different stages they went through with the time frames including how they felt about each other at the time and what they’d told each other, and what the nature of their relationship was if you don’t mind?? (and also like big steps/milestones in their relationship like confessions, first kiss, first whatever). It just all seems kinda... muddled (which obviously it’s complicated by nature but if you could please help out i’d really appreciate it!! ty💗)

Sara & Kayla give different recaps. Sara will just do a minimal scheme while Kayla includes events. This is quite lengthy. Warning: It’s all opinion!

Sara:

— 2011-2013: Just (best) friends. Slow buildup of crushes.

— 2014: Just Friends. Boundary pushing coming specially from Tae.

— 2015: Still just friends, but they are basically “courting” each other and recognize they have a mutual attraction or - at the very least - curiosity. Possible kiss. There are moments of high tension.

—- 2016: They start an affair around May. Tae “breaks up” with Jk in August due to the unfavorable circumstances (they weren’t actual boyfriends). Jk seems upset but there is no direct confrontation. They are on good terms (meaning they don’t stop being friends). They start to mess around again during BS&T promotions until the end of Nov, which is when they stop again. BH starts cutting them out of content.

—- 2017: Tae regrets it & makes efforts to win Jk back (romantically). They both had started to hang out with friends outside of BTS which caused additional friction. Tae confesses to Jk at the start of March which is probably the first time there was an actual love confession between them. They start a serious relationship.

— 2018: Jk falls into a slump at the very beginning of the year (probs having to do with fame, identity, restrictions, etc) which causes Tae to suffer as well. (The group as a whole was also having a hard time but we are focusing on TK). This can be considered a crisis but they resolved it and came out stronger out of it, both as individuals and as a couple. As a group too !

— 2019: closeting intensifies even more but funnily enough they drop big lgbtq hints. They mature as a couple. By the end of the year(?) they start living in different apartments when they aren’t promoting which causes them to spend less time together.

— 2020: they keep being stable as a couple. Tae goes through some struggles but they are ok. Closeting reaches its peak, their first contract expires & they stage a talk to be able to change the narrative & interact more freely in front of cameras while still being closeted. (Disclaimer: I personally don’t think they have had any type of official engagement, just that they wear couple rings to show commitment like koreans typically do).

Kayla: reminder that this is entirely opinion on the timeline of their relationship. This is a quick summary. The timeline goes into further detail. Again, you’re free to believe as you like.

2011- predebut; friends as evidenced by Tae saying in an interview he noticed Jk first + Jk bought Tae a shirt for him while in America; Jk has also said Tae brought him out of his shell

213- debut; close friends; possible attraction but not recognized yet; this can be deduced based on them singing to one another in Rookie Kings in ep 7, Tae saying “you’re beautiful” to Jk and not the girl in the “Beautiful” MV + when the members go over the VHope kiss in episode 8, Jk seems very uneasy and uncomfortable about it (prior to the kiss talk, Taekook were affectionate, linking hands and hugging, mimicking one another)

2014; close friends who have noticed the attraction each feels and begin pushing boundaries to see how the other will respond; an example would be festa 2014, when Tae says touching thighs is for pervs but then is fine with Jk doing so moments later; Tae is visibly aroused by Jk dancing in two different moments this year (April during “boy in luv” and Sept 16 when he bites his lips and gets heavy lidded); in April when BTS act out a skit of Jk falling in love, TK pretend to lean in for a kiss and neither expresses discomfort. Milestone - realizing the other doesn’t react negatively to flirting / boundary testing

2015: close friends continuing to push boundaries; suspicions by us (theorizing) of a first kiss due to Tae drawing attention to his lips in two selecas in January + Jk recommending a gay song “Memo”, in which he changed the lyrics to say he wants “one more”; 123 theory first comes into play as well as Jk starting to send messages through songs - in May he recommends a song by Eels and highlights “can’t help falling in love” + in the same month Tae and Hobi cover “hug me” and then Jk uploads a song “eat” which has the line about wanting to hug someone. In December he covers “paper hearts” and shortens the lyrics from the original by 3 seconds so “when there’s cameras and I can’t reach you” is at 1:23. He also releases “fools” half an hour before Tae’s birthday. It’s an LGBTQ song. He’s called Tae a fool before in a fan sign. In addition, there is a lot of sexual tension in 2015 - Notably, festa. In June, Tae suggestively plays with a mic and Jk puts a mic in his mouth. When BTS appear on Yaman, TK are the only ones to interlock hands + appear to share looks of complicity when the interviewer asks if the members ever touched each other. She “explained it all” to us as Clarissa Darling with her mismatched fashions and adolescent perspective on life. She cast a spell over us making us fall deeper and deeper in love with her as Sabrina The Teenage Witch. She’s also won our hearts while making us laugh out loud in films like Drive Me Crazy, Can’t Hardly Wait, and Not Another Teen Movie. But, her current leading role on Melissa & Joey is where she’s really made all of us red in the face with laughter. I’m sure you know who I’m talking about by now… She’s practically a household name… You guessed it. It’s Melissa Joan Hart. This industry veteran isn’t just a rockstar on the screen. In fact, she is quite the accomplished entrepreneur. For a deeper look into what Melissa’s all about, I’ll give you a little peek into the convo I had with her the other day while she was spending some time on the East Coast.

Okay. Tell me about your store, Sweet Harts, and where the idea came from.

Yea! It’s been open a little over two years now and my mom and I, through all our travels all over the world, have always explored candy stores, so we really wanted to open our own. And, we thought, Sweet Harts, would be an adorable name for it. It probably more started with the name than anything else. Then, people started investing in it and we got this little store off the ground. It’s in Sherman Oaks, California right now, but we’d like to expand it to other areas and see how that goes over. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but it’s this beautiful little shop. We have birthday parties, baby showers, kids come after school, and they come after little league games. It’s been really fun.

So what is your favorite goodie or candy that you have in the store?

I just love the idea of ring pops I think since I was a little girl. You get that giant ring and you get to suck on it ‘cause it’s sugary!

Do your kids have any Sweet Harts favorites? Are they ring pop fans too?

My five year old always loves those fish lollipops. They’re almost like gummy fish on a stick, but they’re sour too. My three year old is really into the Pucker machine. It’s one of those machines where you basically make your own Pixie stick, but it’s called Pucker Powder. You can put whatever flavors and colors you want in there and they love to make those. They don’t want to eat it. They just want to make it.

Okay, let’s talk about one of the other projects you work on with your mother…Hartbreak Films, Inc. What are some of the perks when it comes to working with family?

Well, the good thing is, who are you going to trust more than your mom, ya know? You always know she’s got your back and everything’s going to go well. But, there’s always times when the mother/daughter line gets crossed with your working relationship, so we’ve had to learn over the years. I mean, we’ve been doing it about eighteen years, so we’ve had to learn how to put certain things aside or business aside and deal with the other issue that may be at hand. One of the plus sides is that it makes you talk to your mom all the time. It’s a great way to be on the phone with your mom. You stay in touch more.

Can you tell me about some of the projects you have going on right now with Hartbreak?

Sure! Well, the history of it all is that my mom found the Archie comics Sabrina The Teenage Witch and brought it to Viacom where we decided to make it a TV movie for Showtime. Then, from that spawned the show and we did that for many years. Along with that, we were doing the animated series, a bunch of TV movies. I actually just ran into Ryan Reynolds a few minutes ago and he was in the first Sabrina movie with me. So, we had a long-running franchise with that of course.

What about some of the other projects?

We did a ton of other TV movies in the process. We did a movie about Shirley Temple’s life story. She wouldn’t give the project to anybody else, except us, which was wonderful because she is a huge idol of mine. It was a great moment to meet her and give her blessing to tell her story. It meant a lot to me. Just last year our first feature film came out on DVD called Nine Dead, that we shot in Baton Rouge. And then we did the TV movie, My Fake Fiance, which is pretty much where Melissa & Joey came from. The network loved the chemistry between us and decided to create a TV show. So, that’s where we are now. Other than that we also have a web-series that will be up very soon. I can’t really talk about it, but it’s going to be a really fun, family-oriented reality web-series. It’s sort of like a family talk show. That’s one that I’m really excited about. We have an animated show in the works, another TV show being done in Canada, a feature, and a few other things also.

Boy, sounds like your plate is pretty much full. Back to Sabrina, though, how did you guys first decided to take it from just a movie and expand it into an entire TV series?

Oh, it was really simple, actually. Before the movie even aired, my mother had sat with an editor and cut together a trailer of what it could look like as a TV show. She then went to five different networks. Three of them bid on it in a room and ABC ended up being the best choice for it, putting the show on TGIFriday’s time slot. We were shootin’ it by that Fall!

So, what was it like working on Sabrina?

It was wonderful. I had a blast. Clarissa was a lot of fun to do too, but it was hard because I was also in high school. But, Sabrina was really the first time I worked as an adult even though my mom was on the set with me. I was on my own. I was living by myself. I bought a car. I moved to LA. I was so excited to be on my own and working. I loved the crew. We pretty much had the same crew for over seven years and we had a blast. We travelled the world together and became best friends.

Yea, ya know, when you were on Clarissa Explains It All, I used to watch you all the time and try to dress like you, but it was always a complete fail.

I know! I watch it now and some of the things are back in style and some of them are not at all. It’s so funny because that’s what I always get. When I was Clarissa, people would always tell me they want to dress like me and they loved my style. When I was Sabrina, people would tell me how they loved the cat and how their kids loved my show. Now that I’m doing Melissa & Joey, I get, “Oh, you’re so funny.” It’s just such a compliment. I love that people are telling me I’m so funny like they’re just figuring it out. (She laughs.)

Like it’s a new discovery, right? Well, you've always been funny. I guess maybe that goes without saying sometimes for people. I mean, your list of credits and accomplishments is beyond amazing. As a veteran in entertainment, what do you feel are some of the key ingredients to being successful in your career?

Well, the thing with this business is that there’s no set plan. There’s no moving up the ladder, getting the promotion. You can have a great show with a great character who’s iconic, but when it’s over, you’re back down at the bottom of the ladder again. You have to fight your way back to the top. It really is a business of rejection. You have to have a thick skin and you have to be willing to take a lot of crap to get what you want. Your managers and agents aren’t always enough. Sometimes you have to push your own career along. That’s why I’m producing and directing and those kind of things too. It’s a game of numbers, too, but it’s not an easy way to make a living. That’s for sure.

So how do you juggle marriage, motherhood, home life, and your career, ‘cause you do so much?

I literally take it day by day. When I get home, I’ll look at my calendar and figure out what needs to happen. Do we need our nanny tomorrow? Am I going to make it to the gym tomorrow? What do the kids have to do? I have to make preparations for everything. I know what the next year of my life looks like until next August, month by month… when I’ll be in Connecticut and when I’ll be in California, so I can plan Christmas parties and things like that based on when I’m going to be in town. So, I have to be that far ahead of time while at the same time take it day by day.

Well, clearly, your role on Melissa & Joey differs from your real life as a loving and active mother, but, at the same time, can you relate to your character as she’s a career woman juggling home life as well?

Yea. I mean, the one thing is that my kids are kind of growing up gradually while she was kind of thrown into it. With my character, I take my natural Mommy instinct and I do the exact opposite for the show. But, at the same time, we actually are going through the same thing. I hadn’t really thought of it that way before. We’re both trying to pursue careers while trying to raise good children and it depends on the day which one actually takes priority. Like, is today a day that my kids really need me or is today a day that I can escape and go to work? It’s tough and there’s sacrifices on both sides. I think our generation was told that we can be great moms and CEOs. I think it’s a really hard thing to do both great. I think you’re really lucky to be able to do both things good.

Well, since you said you have the whole year planned out, what do you have in store for us with Melissa & Joey?

Well, right now you’re seeing the second half of the first season. It’s still technically the first season. There’s about 12 or 13 more episodes this season. And, in a couple weeks, we’re going back to start filming season two! The storylines are just being figured out. If the ratings really pick up more, then, hopefully we’ll go from there.

What’s the chemistry like on set?

With Melissa & Joey, we all have families and we’re all really focused on making a really great show. So, what’s really fun is that we’ve opened up the lines of communication so that we could give each other notes. Like, “Hey, if you try this it might be funnier than that,” or, “What if you say this instead?” Now, we have that kind of communication across the cast and the crew has started chiming in as well. We’re really all in it together, so it’s a nice collaborative effort to make it the show the best it can be.

Some say the show is like a modern day’s Who’s The Boss. What are some of the twists and aspects of the show that make it different?

For starters, you have two people that are not parents on the show. On that show they were both parents. On this show they come into in completely blind. Another thing that’s different, which I actually think is the main ingredient for the show, is that Mel and Joe don’t like each other. They bicker and quarrel. I feel like the show has elements of Moonlighting and of The New Adventures of Old Christine. Like where the mom is not really the greatest mom. She’s sort of a wreck. She’s just a hot mess that you love to watch like in this show. I just feel like our show is really funny. Who’s The Boss was a great show and it lasted forever, so if we have that kind of blessing, we would be very lucky.

Two Brooklyn Mugs Hang Out on a 40 Year Old Movie Classic

Okay.”

The conventional way to end a “take” while directing a movie is to say loudly “cut”!

The director of this movie says, “Okay.” He’s unconventional. He looks like an intellectual, but flashing back four decades I guess it’s just his signature black-rimmed glasses that create that impression for me. He’s wearing a Ralph Lauren tweed sport coat with leather elbow patches over a worn-at-the-collar button-down plaid shirt, and brown wide-whale baggy corduroy pants that hang over a pair of clunky worn-out shoes. No flash, just a simple lived-in look. More like a dude who has escaped from a PBS fundraiser. To a street-smart cat from Brooklyn, the skinny little guy looks un-cool except for his distinct walk. The man has a cool, confident, urban boppin’ walk. I will come to learn that this dude is really smart, but far from a nerdy intellectual. His public persona of a neurotic intellectual is a movie character creation. The guy I will come to know better has legitimate Brooklyn-bred street-smart self-confidence. Before the movie finishes shooting months later, I will have formed a very gradual, unexpected, life-long friendship with this iconic New York character.

By the time I was hired as the unit still photographer on this untitled film, the director/writer/actor had already made a cluster of movies none of which I had seen.

Eventually, I would see them all. My old school, (pre-yuppie and pre-hipster) Brooklyn upbringing had made me a cautious street-guy, wary about the people with whom I became friends. It’s a matter of trust; a skeptical survival instinct. Plus, I have a deep aversion to ass-kissers, and the movie business breeds insecurity and greed. Sometimes “solid” people turn into embarrassing ass-kissing sycophants. I will learn, the director of this movie will never brownnose anyone about anything.

The dude with the signature black-rimmed glasses is Woody Allen.

The movie he’s directing will eventually be called: Annie Hall. It is the spring of 1976 as we start shooting in the Hamptons. I observe that Woody is a quiet, private man. He rarely speaks to actors or crew members. But he’s not a snob either. If someone asks him a question he will give a slightly shy and succinct answer. He’s a refreshing antidote to some conventional directors who feel obligated to become unqualified junior-psychologists, over-explaining everything to cast and crew about motivation and meaning.

Then there is the unique guy with the signature glasses.

The first day of shooting is eaten up mostly with boring running shots of cars. Later in the day when the light is soft with overcast – Woody’s favorite light – Gordon Willis, the great cinematographer who looks like Rembrandt, finishes lighting the exterior (with a hint of tungsten coming through the windows from inside) of a Hamptons house where the famous “lobster scene” is being shot. “Gordy,” another man of few words, uses irony with a splash of cynicism as his best defense verbally and brilliant lighting visually.

He turns to us in the camera crew, “Is my lighting funny?”

As Woody later says in many interviews, and as I will witness first-hand on several of their classic collaborations, Gordon’s gift to Woody is a formal filmmaking foundation. He gets a daily on-the-job teacher-student master class in filmic skills, which Woody admits he simply did not possess on his previous movies. Gordon’s unique eye becomes a visual partner to Woody’s winning words. Together they create lightning in a bottle.

After several days in the Hampton’s, we are shooting in a tiny apartment on the Upper West Side. In between lighting set-ups, I am sitting on the building’s stoop. For those of us who grew up in this fantastic city of New York, especially those of us from the outer boroughs, a stoop is a social hang-out place of significant importance. It provokes talk. And laughs. And dreams. The stoop is where at a young age we juked and jived, talked sports and girls, complained about our shortness of dough, and occasionally ranked on each other or gossiped about stool-pigeons in the neighborhood. If you are a stool-pigeon from old-school Brooklyn you are marked bad for life. Woody can dig all this too.

He grew up in Brooklyn. So when he bops out of the apartment building between shots he sits opposite me on the stoop railing.

I say nothing until he does. He tells me how much he admires my older brother Pete’s writing. They know each other casually from Elaine’s restaurant. I thank him. I will soon learn that Woody is very sparse with compliments (later, over years, I will observe that he hates to get compliments).But this breaks the ice and we chat for the next 45 minutes. He’s feeling me out. Trying to see where I’m at. It’s cool.

It was a ditto thing. And I start to feel that Woody is “good people” too. After this conversation we start to develop a very early-stage mental shorthand.

Back upstairs on the set we are both quiet. My job as a unit still photographer takes concentration and I am here to work. I am on high alert to capture defining moments that my training as a photojournalist has taught me. The essence of my job requires me to be ever-ready for that decisive release of the shutter to photograph a precise piece of action.

On movies, I am always looking to capture the most dramatic or comedic point of a scene. Between takes I shoot portraits of actors, candid animated moments between director and actors, director and cameraman, and shots of the splendid work done by all the very talented people involved. Basically, the same deal as journalism. A photo essay. In between set-ups I can also take a breather, shoot the breeze or break balls, all of which I am very good at.

As the day goes on, I notice that Woody is obsessive about magic tricks with a coin, always practicing to make it disappear. The room is small and I am standing next to him surrounded by a cluster of busy crew people setting up the next shot. He is not showing off, but rather perfecting his skills with the quarter for his own amusement.

Suddenly the quarter falls from Woody’s hand, and I follow it falling into the cuff of my pants. I am sure he has spotted it. But it’s clear he hasn’t as he looks for its landing at the couch next to him. I decide to fuck with him and not tell him right away that his quarter is in my cuff. Woody picks up the end-pillow—the quarter is not there. He searches the floor around his feet. No coin.

The First Assistant Director calls him in to watch the scene in the adjoining room. I leave the quarter in my cuff and enter the room to photograph the scene. After ten minutes and a couple of takes he says, “Okay.” Then he’s back in the living room tossing the couch again for his quarter. He picks up the big pillow closest to where he was standing. He searches thoroughly, frustration reddening his face. I am both amused that this talented guy is so flustered, but worried that if I give it up now he will have an unpleasant reaction to my ball-breaking.

He walks away for a moment, pivots back to the couch and picks up a second big pillow. No quarter. Now he’s down on one knee looking under the couch to no avail.

I’m thinking:

Should I give myself up?

Nope. I let it lay, for 30 years.

The next day we are shooting in the same apartment. I go into the empty kitchen and put my cameras on the table. As I change the film roll in one camera, Woody and Keaton enter the kitchen. Keaton is one of the nicest people I have ever worked with. Keaton and Woody can finish each other’s sentences. They are very close friends and have great chemistry on screen. Annie Hall will become their bases-loaded homerun.

They are goofing about something. And then start talking about a play they had both seen separately and did not like. I am not really interested in a convo about theater so I tune out. Suddenly, Woody turns to me and says, “What was the last play you saw that you liked?” I thought for a few split seconds and said impulsively, “I hate plays and don’t go that often.” There was an awkward, pregnant silence in the kitchen as Woody and Keaton snuck a peek at each other.

Woody finally says, “Seriously, you don’t like plays?”

“No, not really, I mostly go to plays out of politeness to friends who are actors in them. But most plays make me move my ass back and forth in the seat. I’m a movie guy. I love watching movies. My mother was a cashier at the RKO Prospect in my Brooklyn neighborhood so I got to see movies for free when I was a kid, and I went frequently.”

I could tell that both Woody and Keaton were surprised at my candor, and probably thought I was a cultural zero. Growing up our big Irish-American family was very well-read. Books were our refuge, our escape. But I was talking square business. Plays were harder to walk out of if you did not enjoy them. Movies were easier to cut short and they cost far less dough. And plays are an acquired taste for a street-mug from Brooklyn who grew up poor. As I got older and matured, I enjoyed plays much more as I now do.

Later, as the shoot was almost finished, I asked Woody if he had a title for the film. He said he was considering a title called: Anhedonia. I knew that it meant a psychological condition that prevents certain people from experiencing pleasure from pleasurable acts.

I laughed and said, “That title will sell six tickets”.

Woody laughed, which he did rarely in my limited observation on this movie. We would eventually share many more laughs over the years in the city we both love.

Although he worked as a stand-up comic in smoke-filled clubs in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco often on the same bill with potheads and the occasional junkie, Woody told me that he had never actually smoked a joint. He also said with a straight face that he didn’t think any good music was made after 1947. I was a Rock & Roll lover and weed head, so, of course, I told him I could not agree. I also, in forty years, never heard him use the word cool. Like I said earlier, the dude is unconventional.

I gave up weed in 1983. I am still a fervent Rock and Roll fan. I use cool every day.

I’ve done photographs on seventy-seven movies in thirty-eight busy years, and have done twenty-six movies with this cat, and I still think he is the most honorable, loyal person I’ve ever met in the movie business. In addition, his strong, well-read literary sensibility, his extensive knowledge of classic and art movies (American and Foreign), his enthusiasm for sports, and his verve and passion for music (plays clarinet) rubs off on you just by hanging out with him. It’s a good hang.

Words. Images. Music.

Movies.

NYC.

Loyalty.

It is hard not to stay interested in his skillful work, and his extraordinary wit. His unpretentious wisdom never made me feel like Woody displayed a superior vibe to others. Deep in his heart, he is a street guy.

I can proudly say the Woody Allen I know is a mensch and my friend.

Annie Hall is a wonderful movie with great dialog, smart jokes, realistic comedy, and for me a sentimental journey back in time through a nostalgic lens on both the pain and happiness of comedian Alvy Singer growing up in Brooklyn and searching for love in Manhattan. The wonderfully-written scenes were often touching, and some had side-splitting wit. It is, after all, a relationship movie that even a Brooklyn kid who grew in financial struggle could love. The ending is bittersweet, like real life.

The movie got released forty years ago this month, it was nominated for five Oscars, and won four including Best Picture. It is considered a classic. Most famous comedians love it. Woody didn’t attend the Oscars in 1978. He told my younger brother Denis in an interview for the LA Herald Examiner the day before the Oscars back then that he couldn’t take the Academy Awards seriously if they didn’t nominate Gordon Willis for Best Cinematography. He’s that kind of loyal.

In 2006, thirty years after we worked on Annie Hall together, we were sitting at The Garden watching the Knicks play. Woody has taken me lots of times to his paid for top-dollar season courtside Knicks seats. He is not a celebrity freeloader. He tips the waiters well. In fact, if he gives you his seats to go without him, he asks only that you tip the courtside waiters well. It’s not an act. He is hands down the most generous actor I ever hung out with. We have eaten many restaurant meals together, and I have tried, but Woody Allen will simply not let me pick-up a tab.

At half time, the Knicks were ahead when he turned to me to ask my thoughts on a personal matter, and, as usual, I gave him straight talk with my honest opinion.

He said, “I always knew I could trust you Hamill when you told me during the first week of Annie Hall that you hated plays. I did not agree with you, but I respected your honesty.”

“Hey Wood, thanks,” I said, “And I owe you a quarter.” He looked at me puzzled. I told him the story about him looking for his magic-trick quarter that landed in my cuff. He seemed further baffled, saying he had no recollection of the incident.

I said, “You see, you should have tried at least one joint.”
