I don’t have a specific ship i'm particularly loyal to, so I guess I’ll rate them and also provide my own headcanons:

(disclaimer i dont know ship names so imma just try my best)

Trine-shipping: yes, put the three of them together, I don’t care. familial, sexual, romantic, platonic, its all good. I go crazy seeing them stand next to each other in the cartoon what do you want from me.

thunderwarp: I see this one a lot and I quite like it. these two being mates with starscream doing his own thing kinda makes sense considering starscream has a bunch of other ships. also makes it fun when something happens to one of them and starscream is left in the awkward position of having to deal with that.

thunderstar: been thinking about this one more lately. they’re like foils to each other. thundercracker’s a good boy to starscream’s bad boy, and he does such a concern about all the morally dubious stuff starscream gets up to. but at the same time, he admires starscream’s ambition and rizz and starscream the kinda bot that would pull you so high if you followed him. I think out of anyone, starscream is the closest to actually trusting thundercracker. 

starwarp: i had this thought one time of what if skywarp is like the horniest asexual and starscream is the most traumatized aromantic, and how would that even work XD nothing solid in the works just an idea that I had. ive seen these two less often outside of trine shipping but it can be pretty hot. I like when they are being protective of each other. I always see skywarp as more emotionally open than his trinemates and starscream can use some of that open and honest emotional love and care. someone to forcfully make him accept being loved. someone who will actually push back when he’s being stupid. and with skywarp being loyal to megatron, so much angst potential for both of them.

starbee: im a sucker for the whole ghost bee starscream dynamic. I already made a post about these two, and after all this time I still really enjoy this ship. I think characters that don’t actually like each other at first but grow into a mutual respect is so tasty. I think some people don’t like the ship because they headcanon bee as too young? well, starscream is actually younger in my fic lmao, but also they’re like 6 million years old and are born with full adult processing capabilities, I don’t think age matters here :P its less about intimacy for me anyway. I like them together because of how much it takes to get there. 

starwavewave: okay this one is 100% fueled by tfone but guyssss guysss theyre married and megatron is their son and im just aaaagh dont seperate them! such a kookie dynamic, the cool headed soundwave, the emotionally volatile shockwave, the arrogant yet cowardly starscream, all being fail dads to their little scamp leader. hahaha. high command polycule 

megastar: gasp, rated above skystar. yes, I just find this dynamic more interesting. I like an abusive ship sometimes for the angst but I also enjoy seeing megatron when he isnt abusive? kinda catharsis maybe. I read a fic once where the war is over and starscream invites megatron to one of optimus’ high profile parties and is appalled at megatron showing up in robot equivalent of underdressed, meanwhile megatron the working class miner is like “I washed, what else was I supposed to do” XD and I just love that haha. theres just so many ways to take it. I wont be doing any megastar in my au, I just tag anything that has megatron and starscream interacting with megastar cuz thats the dynamic to me

skystar/jetstar: iddkkkkk i know this is the most popular ship but it’s just!! idk! its not as interesting to me haha. I love this as a past ship, they were roommates in college, starscream opened himself to someone, chose to become close and then was hurt by it. just another wound on starscream’s spark before he ever even meets megatron. I don’t think theyd get back together after the ice. idk how well I can write this so I’ll just explain how it happens in my au here: skyfire died and starscream created this version of skyfire in his mind that was perfect, he memorialised him because he was dead! you just cant live up to how someone remembers you. I think that was part of the reason why starscream reacts so badly when skyfire “betrayed” him. unlike thundercracker, skyfire knows how to set healthy boundaries. not to mention he’d been on ice for four million years, lost his entire life, everyone he knows, and his entire civilisation, planet, and culture to a war he had no part in. bot’s gonna be upset. pissed off even. skyfire shouldnt have to be some soft sparked punching bag for starscream, he’s kind and a pacifist but he’s also going to get upset and have feelings. I think starscream’s betrayal would hit pretty hard, he’d gonna be upset about how much starscream’s changed, how much damage starscream helped cause during the war, and also starscream shooting him in the back for wanting to protect the native wildlife! when they properly talk to each other again it’s going to be heated on both sides, and I think after some hard work from both sides they could end up in a place where they are willing to be friends again, but I don’t think they’d conjunx. skystar isnt end game to me, but it is canon and an important part of the story

starop: I think ive read one fic where I really liked this ship. it’s just such a random pairing. my initial reaction is just noooo optimus prime?? but that guy’s everyone’s dad! Ive been told a big part of it is they’re both megatron’s ex’s and that’s pretty funny. not for me sadly haha (opxmegatronoldmanyaoiotpfrfr)

starjack…wheelstar? whatever the starscream and wheeljack one is. I’m not into this one. I see where people are coming from with it, but wheeljack isnt an interesting character to me. they can be science bros tho

starscream and windblade: ive seen this like once or twice. not for me. windblade is like, starscream’s daughter or something idk XD 

soundstar: uuuh i dont see it. sorry! i legit have no thoughts on soundstar. theyre coworkers XD. ive seen fics where the seekers are really young and soundwave moms them, and that’s really cute. okay, I like soundwave as a caretaker if the seekers are young, but yeah I don’t think I understand this one. 

shockstar: nooooooo. tho ironically theres more canon content there to fuel this one than soundstar (is this emotion?) but still no XD I don’t even hate shockwave! let him be sunstorm’s dad, that’s cute. but no, shockewave too creepy. no ship. they are also coworkers

what other ship is there even? oh yeah

starprowl: this is apparently a really popular ship?! I guess in a way prowl is sort of like the autobot’s starscream, undermining his leader, arrogant, willing to do the dubious play. they’re both ruthless. I like this one better than starjacked, but its still an odd pairing to me.

oh! knockout and starscream, i can kinda see it? like, as a rebound after breakdown? I like knock out and breakdown, so I’d only see these two as like friends or if something happened to breakdown. they’re a LOT of fun when they interact tho heh heh, perfectly clashing personalities

on the topic of tfp, I guess starscream and arcee is a ship? I can see this similar to my enjoyment of starbee, they’d have to work reeaally hard for this one to work but they have had potentially positive interactions in the show (before starscream screws it up) so its possible in a better world where starscream doesnt suck they could become friends. him killing cliffjumper is gonna be a huge hurdle tho!

do people ship starscream and ratchet? I don’t ship it, but I do really like interactions between them. starscream is so terrible but he also gets hurt a lot. ratchet is grumpy and prejudice but he’s the best doctor and he’ll fix him up! I like when something terrible happens to starscream and ratchet cant help but feel bad for the guy. that’s the good stuff.

lastly i have been asked a few times on trinebee. im assuming this is bumblebee and the trine. i hadnt thought about it but it makes sense! if youre a starbee shipper, but you also support trine propaganda, then it only makes sense to bring bee into the trine. also bee and thundercracker are friends! the only ones who havent really had any interaction is bee and warp, and honestly idk if I see those two getting along but bumblebee is everybody’s friend so XD I’m sure it’ll work out!

and i think those are all the thoughts i have on the ships! 

no hate on anyone who ships any of these!!! you all do what you do, these are just my opinions, and honestly I’m just not a huge shipper to begin with haha. I am…unsure if there will be any shipping content in my au, I write my scenarios very much “canon but to the left” and so it comes out very sex-less because romance and intimacy is just not the type of content I’m in the business of writing. but, idk, i think about it sometimes. sometimes I think about the end of chapter one of thundercracker’s origin, the night starscream took thundercracker out on a not-date. i think, who knows, in some version of the story maybe they shared a kiss? maybe they went back to the apartment and things went further? maybe. but of course, in every version of the story, starscream is gone the next morning.

You know what I really love about this Phum/Peem scene? They're making it clear that mutual attraction is just one piece of the relationship puzzle. But the friendship still needs to be there, the caring when someone is having a bad day, and being there to pick them up. So many BLs gloss over the mutual support part of romantic relationships in favor of the swoony bits, but this is the kind of thing that makes a couple seem likely to actually last.

Also what does it say about BLs that I was so relieved they actually rolled up their pant legs at the pool? (Of course they still end up wet in the end, but it's the principle of the thing!)

Phum is just 100% always thirsty for Peem and I respect it.

Ooohh!! 👀✨ I love this question, very juicy hahaha 🤣💕 This would depend on which point of the story they are, but the trio will eventually love someone to some romantic extent (at least).

For Kurumi, that's a big YES, as she's quite the hopeless romantic! She loves shoujosei series(or just the romance genre in general) and dreams a lot of being in a relationship like the lead couples there. Add to that her cuteness aggression, it's quite inevitable that she gets crushes of varying degrees on quite a good amount of characters 😆🫶✨ (examples are Tsuna, Kyoko, Haru, Chrome & Enma - if you feel like there's a pattern then yes sjdfbhjsdv). Of course, a simple crush is different from really falling deep in love with someone, but it's a good start. Her only problem is that she can't commit and go through with it (like confessing, etc). I don't know if you know already, but if you see my previous ship arts with her, maybe you already know who she does fall in love with lol

For Kana, it's a vague/complicated type of love that can be romantic so I guess that's a "yes"??? Anyway, getting it to even develop slightly towards that direction is technically not impossible, the chance is non-zero, but it's gonna take...A LOT of time, patience, persistence, understanding & survival skills (and acceptance that u can't ever fix her lmao). She already has a ridiculous amount of issues caused by her love(/obsession?) on the platonic side of things ngl mxhdkbddmdn

For Yui, that's a HELL YEAH! Among the trio, he's the only one with dating experience but he really can't say he loved the people he dated romantically. It's more of trial and error run for him. Fortunately for him, he does eventually find someone he likes a lot! I don't think I mentioned this before unlike for the other twins, so I'll put it here lol The person he ends up falling for is Hiyori (Oniyanagi 10th Gen Sun Guardian).

Kurumi's bestest friends in the whole world are definitely Kana and Yui! 🥰💖✨ They've been through a lot and are very much ride-or-die. Yui is Kurumi's very first friend. They initially became friends out of obligation and loneliness, but after some rough events here and there, it became a genuine friendship. He's stuck with her/supported her during difficult times in their childhood and Kurumi will always appreciate him for that.

Then there's Kana to Kurumi. Where do I even begin? That's a whole rabbit hole right there. They're platonic soulmates, a set package. Do not separate OR ELSE. 👁️👄👁️

Oh, from the top of my head, that would be Hibari. I'll just make separate post if I can think of another canon character who can dethrone him in this lmao His respect for her is based on the respect that he would have for strong and worthy opponents. Kind of similar to Reborn? But more chase-able/bully-able (since she's a fellow student, their paths would cross more often).

It all started when Kana attacked and tried to kill him this one time to take over the school (they went ham at that time, Reborn just stopped them). This is what happens when you think murder is always the answer to your problems. You get some guy, with a passion of at least 180 hardcore soulslike game players, who wants to keep on retrying that boss fight @ you.

Yui: "Did your OC bear witness to anyone’s full character arc?"

Yui doesn't really like being in the spotlight. He's not even that fond of having the right-hand man role designated to him and the "formal" responsibilities that come with it (this is why Gokudera criticizes him often). But one of the main reasons he still stuck to this role is so that he can get to watch over the twins in his own way.

He did bear witness to a good amount of Kana's character arc, but since we're talking from start to finish of someone's character arc, then that would be for Kurumi's. No matter what happens, whether this bestfriend of his grows into a fine person or falls into ruins, he will be there to witness it all 🙂

HAHAHA OHH THIS IS A FUN QUESTION. i think ive actually answered it on a few different blogs for characters too but ill say it here too 💖

for koi honestly he has kind of a problem of like looking at the good vs the bad in a person and then sort of. completely ignoring the bad if the good is good enough. like this goes for his friendships too. he’s actually canonically friends with a pretty awful person (ophelia) but they get along because she’s fun to be around and a pretty brutally honest person.

his “type” is pretty loose though. he definitely prioritizes honesty and interest. basically if you can let him rant to you for 5 hours about some random movie he watched then yall are good. in terms of looks i will say it’s been a pattern over and over again that Most of his love interests in rps ive done have been like. humanoid, but definitely not human. i think so far there’s been a ghost, insectoid, literal rotting immortal being, yeah. yeah he’s a bit of a freak. tbh i don’t think he has any huge preference on actual appearance though.

he’s pansexual.

for vian it’s veeery personality dependent. i answered this on his blog but basically he wants a partner who makes him feel good about himself. that’s basically all there is to it. someone who admires him more than anything else. preferably someone who’s less intelligent than he is because he’d absolutely hate if they ever corrected him on something. he likes being someone’s better. he also wants someone who is completely dependent on him (whether that be through addiction, kidnapping, or physical weakness). i think he could only ever truly love and feel safe to be affectionate with someone if there was no chance of them ever leaving.

anyways in terms of appearance though he doesn’t really like too much muscle. he prefers people shorter than him too which is rlly funny to me. i think i mentioned more on the character blog but i can’t remember.

he is bisexual with a men pref.

aisling’s tricky because i mean. teeechnically anyone. but not really. he’d say anyone but that’s not really true. he gets scared when someone gets a little too affectionate with him too quickly. like if he’s not the one initiating the speed they go at then he’s like wwhwgaggisgoingonohgod. also he doesn’t like the idea of dating other fae because again. most of them do not like him. also he finds it very difficult to connect with them.

he is pansexual :)

rosé’s a lot pickier than a lot of my other characters and i think ive talked about it before but there’s a lot of factors that go into it. first off he never really had any crushes or romantic feelings growing up. his first “crush” was on a literal god of beauty so i mean. standards are high. that was also his last crush. adonis was honestly one of the only people rosé ever truly loved and connected with on a deeper level. he feels very little sexual attraction (including towards adonis) and romantic attraction is rare from him. he does definitely lean towards more conventional beauty standards in what he personally considers attractive.

he is unlabeled but probably somewhere on the aroace spectrum? again it’s hard to put into a box. gender preference is probably more towards men but i can see him being attracted to other genders too. by the way just for clarification what he has with aisling is platonic. 100% fine with shipping but just putting the canon out here lol :)

anything else i want you to know about me / my character / my shipping habits: So right now from Khonshu's POV, he's kind of standing in the middle of a see-saw. He's got this Guy who keeps showing to give him-- whether Strange considers it or not-- pretty elaborate gifts. I mean the Ancient Egyptians offered their gods bread, vegetables, apparently clothing and ointments were on the table, and Stephen "Wholeass it or not at all" Strange is giving him cooked and spiced hearts from manticores/eldritch creatures he's defeated bc Khon said he likes hearts once. It's a big deal to him, he's definitely gaining power/faith from this. Stephen's out here feeding a starving god.

He has full incentive to keep taking advantage of this for as long as he possibly can, however long Stephen's committed to this joke. Not thinking about it any harder than that, just 'what's the bare minimum I have to do to keep the offerings flowing.' Which is kind of where he's at right now.

happy storyteller saturday! what's the most physically painful thing your oc has endured? how about the most emotionally painful?

Okay, enough evil laughter. Thank you very much for the ask!!! But truly, this is SUCH a perfect question for me, the person whose friend (lovingly) called her "a sadist for fictional characters".

This is going under the cut because not only is it extremely long, there's also very very very explicit discussion of torture, extremely violent deaths, gore, emotional manipulation, and hallucinations, among other things. You have been warned, I guess.

Rook:

Physically painful is definitely the keelhauling hands down. For anyone who doesn't know, that means being tied up and dragged along the underside (keel) of a ship, letting all the barnacles and shit rip into your flesh. (If you're super-duper curious, there's a scene from Black Sails that depicts a version of it that, while not exactly accurate, is enough to give you an idea of how fucked it is. It's on youtube if you search.) Here's what I read to the party when they saw his keelhauling wounds for the first time:

"Every inch of his back and shoulders is raw, covered in dozens, maybe hundreds, of small cuts. They overlap and merge so that his entire back is one giant wound. The skin is covered in such a thick layer of dried blood, almost black in some places, that you can’t get a good look at it. As he moves, some of the cuts, which have just begun to scab over, crack open again. He winces as fresh blood wells to the surface.”

To make things worse, it's (obviously) salt water, which is gonna sting like hell. And on top of that, the poor man was just thrown back in his grungy cell with no medical treatment, so he ended up with several nasty infections. (My most recent snippet offers a bit of insight into his delirious state after that.) And of course, this was after about two weeks of relentless physical torture already.

When the party found him, he was mostly unconscious, and the little glimpses of consciousness he had were entirely delirious from fever. (I posted a little thing here of when the party found him. Yes, he does call the party bard by the name of his favorite party member who died only a day or two before Rook was kidnapped.) And things didn't immediately get better from there, because some of the barnacles he was dragged over were blood barnacles.

Emotionally painful is a tie between the deaths of Warren and Sigmar. Warren was the aforementioned favorite party member who was kind of like a father figure to Rook. He was a werewolf and the party gunslinger. He died, sacrificing himself to revive Rook and save the rest of the party.

Sigmar was an weird guy that Rook befriended by accident and adopted into the party and they both got extremely attached to each other. Except that it turns out that Sigmar was actually just a corpse being piloted from a distance by the BBEG, Dr. Purity. And to make matters worse, the party Wizard had known this for months and didn't tell Rook anything, which resulted in this argument. (Yes, that happened in-character, yes that dialogue is nearly exactly verbatim.) To make matters even worse, the wizard violently destroyed Sigmar with his teeth and claws (he's a fox-based race), and then his brother shattered all of the corpse's bones with a sonic shockwave. Oh, and as they were killing him, Sigmar was begging Rook to help him, saying "You said I've changed." and "You'd be dead without me." :)) (There's a reason that my tag for Rook+Sigmar is "*Liars", hahaha.)

The truly tragic part is that Sigmar (and thus Purity) truly actually really does love Rook, in his own fucked-up way. And both of them are going to have a hard time hurting each other when it comes to it. But I've already decided that Rook is going to beg the party to let him deal the killing blow to Purity. Not because he hates him. In fact, it's for the exact opposite. It's because he already watched the party torture him once, and he can't bear to see it happen again, even though Purity doesn't look like Sigmar did.

Oh, and the Sigmar reveal and "death" happened less than 48 hours before Warren's death, and then the day after Warren died, Rook got kidnapped by Wolf, which eventually led to the keelhauling. (I swear only the kidnapping is my fault. I did NOT know the other two things were planned.)

Shortly after Warren died, Rook, who had been poisoned by one of the guys Warren sacrificed himself to protect us from, had a very vivid hallucination in which he saw Sigmar and Warren's corpses berating him. Extreme tw for gore and potentially body horror, but it's one of my favorite things I've ever written. And yes, I read it out loud to the party when it happened.

Rook feels extremely guilty over both of these things. Warren because he died to revive Rook and save him, and Sigmar/Purity because if he hadn't befriended him and let him into the party, several people would have been spared a LOT of emotional pain.

(Two close runners-up for emotional pain, from just last session (!!!) are him discovering that his former captain and first mentor, Zara, was aware -- in explicit detail -- of the torture he was undergoing at Wolf's hands (the first time, not the keelhauling time), and also the death of Jay (the only friend he'd ever had before meeting the party) as a direct result of his actions. He's not had any time at all to process either of those things, and you'd better believe he's gonna be really fucked up about it in tomorrow's session.)

Although it's pretty complex chinese, and since so much of the show is made up of characters sitting around talking the intricate plot into existence, it's not really a beginner-friendly c-drama either!!!

My fic is practically a NIF/TGCF mashup, it's a Lin Shu+Xie Lian!Joshua Rosfield & Jingyan+Hua Cheng!Dion Lesage——and I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I wanted to ask god please does anyone else see my vision please god does anyone?? but no one would even understand the references, and I couldn't even ask in areas (asian fandom) where there would be a higher chance of people knowing what crack I'm on because asian fandom is all about that...you know...that I loathe—and I have been in pain and I thought right well fine I'm writing the fic anyway it's fine if I have no one to scream about it with because I'm writing it and then I'll find fellow competence porn+politics enjoyers if they find my fic and—and.

Do you see it??? Do you see it? A boy who burned to death in an inferno as an innocent betrayed youth in a catastrophic event caused by his own family, his father slain, his entire clan (and all the troops under his banner) wiped out or scattered. A boy reborn after extensive and horrific injuries after an agonisingly long period of recovery: a ghost who crawled his way out of the gates of hell, the last of his broken once-noble house.

That boy's transformation into his new identity of Mei Changsu/Margrace. His off-screen discovery of the truth that led to Meiling/Phoenix Gate and his continued on-screen quest to learn more. His determination to hold the true culprits accountable at immense personal cost and suffering. His dogged persistence despite incredible odds and visibly failing health. Being surrounded by people who love him and want to protect him, and himself constantly undermining their efforts because his goals are more important than his health. (Because in truth he knows perfectly well that he won't survive, but he can make a difference while he is alive.)

Something that amuses me hugely is how Lin Shu and Joshua literally both come back as 宗主? I love it so much! They come back with the same title! Both of them come back as clan leaders of an organisation that obeys their every command! Margrace is the 不死鳥教団の宗主(=leader of the cult of the undying bird) and Mei Changsu is 江左盟的宗主(=leader of the Jiangzuo alliance).

AND. Hooooo yea this PF fic is just JingSu at this point because oh, a handsome, principled, prideful, and stubborn prince who is a decorated warrior famed for his numerous military accomplishments and the man who is essential to the success of Lin Shu's/Joshua's plans? The resurrected boy barging into his prince's life: no matter how insane it is to choose your side, still "I choose you, Your Highness Prince Jing"??? The fact that the undervalued prince has a history with our secretive ghost protagonist? And (arguably) frequently thought about and missed the bright boy he knew once upon a time in happier days—"I know you," says Dion Lesage without a shadow of a doubt, extremely normal of him to instantly recognise a dead boy he met 20 years ago?

Mutual admiration of each other's integrity and capabilities? Reciprocal faith and remembrance? The foundation of deep respect and enduring friendship, their shared goals and shared family??? I froth at the mouth. JingSu are cousins, PF are stepsiblings by their parents' marriage. Each pair is bound by destiny and by choice—other people have made choices that permanently entangled each pair's lives together forevermore (Joshua+Dion and Jingyan+Xiaoshu), and the choice they themselves personally made to choose each other—

DO YOU SEE THE VISION.

How difficult it is to pursue justice when everyone involved is family and how impossible it is for Lin Shu the nigh-extinguished Chiyan fire for Joshua, the guttering flame, to indict Jingyan's father the Emperor of Liang Dion's father the Emperor of Sanbreque of his crimes against Joshua's family without opening old wounds and hurting many loved ones in the process including Dion himself. The people directly responsible for the tragedies are related to the protagonists in one way or another! If Lin Shu Joshua ever wants resolution for his grief unending, he has to strike at his beloved's father, and plot meticulously to avoid all of the dangers of attacking such a powerful enemy.

(Of course, I acknowledge the critical difference in Jingyan's versus Dion's feelings about their respective fathers.)

Now if only Joshua had done the famous blizzard scene with Dion instead of letting him go off to carry out his ill-advised coup—"Xiao Jingyan! You stand where you are! If I don't stop you today, what are you going to do? What do you think you can possibly accomplish if you charge in to challenge imperial power like this? Do you think you can simply force the Emperor [to do what you want/change his mind about Anabella Wei Zheng]? You have honour and valour but why do you just not have brains! How many more people must be hurt, you tell me!"

Anyway Joshy doesn't have the insufferable smugness of Xiaoshu but he does absolutely have Xiaoshu's pride, the sort of pride that is not just personal pride but familial pride too (after all Joshua comes from extremely prestigious lineage)—just look at how he speaks to Ultima in every scene, his lordly manner. Joshua I think has more Consort Jing to him, and Consort Jing is only my favourite character in all of NIF, in a drama where I love every character to bits—steel in softness, ever gentle ever polite yet not to be bullied and not to be underestimated and also extremely perceptive and learned and patient. Extra sweet bonus that Consort Jing is also a healer. Elegant, restrained, and very repressed. Who knows the depths of Joshua's Consort Jing's grief and loss?

But you know, Jingyan, near the end he is completely in charge—the prince who was always a great and respected general on the battlefield is now more than that, he's directly taking responsibility for all of his people as their future ruler—that means thinking on multiple fronts and exerting control over all of the key governing officials, not merely his military officers. He's leading with confidence, and there's that little scene where he apologises to Xiaoshu for taking action on several plans without consulting him, and Xiaoshu says no, this is the way it should be, this is the correct state of affairs: you are the crown prince, and this is rightfully your arena. You lead, you decide, you command.

Jingyan now sees clearly, he's found out and accepted the truths of his father's role in the atrocity at Meiling and everything that happened back then. He rightly perceives the failings of his family and seeks to redress past wrongs and avoid repetition of past mistakes, he weeds his court of the corrupt and the cowardly, he's become the best possible version of himself: stronger than ever, not just a powerful wartime commander-in-chief but an inspiring leader in the imperial court, careful, thoughtful and politically up-to-speed, finally stable in his sense of self instead of being permanently stuck as that angry and lost and hurting child. He has renewed purpose, he possesses hope for the future, he is able to dedicate himself fully to what he truly believes to be right and act in furtherance of righteous causes—

Critically, this is the man he becomes only because Xiaoshu came back into his life to shake it up. Without Xiaoshu he wouldn't even have the opportunity or means or knowledge. The radiant and fiery boy who Jingyan missed all his life came back to save him. From the outsider prince without contacts or support within the imperial court->to the crown prince who has the court subdued within the palm of his hand. From his pitiful existence as a neglected, unfavoured prince, his lowkey constant simmering resentment, his half-dutiful half-forced obedience of paternal orders that chafe at his conscience->into the steadfast and self-assured prince who is capable of fighting for the betterment of his country and the rallying point for virtuous officials who share those aspirations. The drama shows the audience that Jingyan is unquestionably ready to assume rulership, and together with the person he loves most, they achieve their goals, they save each other and their country (by arresting its downward slide due to the rotten state of its governance).

It's just a strong headcanon of mine (albeit one that I can absolutely present extensive arguments for) but to me Joshua Rosfield is the one and only character able to perform that same abovementioned function for Dion Lesage. Catalyst, turning point, spark that ignites the fire—whatever you call it, this is salvation. It is beautifully poetic that both Lin Shu and Joshua are characterised by fire. They are the fires of change that burn away the old life: before their arrival, the two war princes exist in a state of wearying routine, long-suffering and almost hopeless. Both Jingyan and Dion are shackled by their stations and duties, both are unloved sons with virtually no chance of their circumstances improving without drastic action, and both are trapped in precarious situations where they are subject to the whims of their father (if their imperial fathers turn on them, it will result in irrevocable loss of their status).

Dion's position is weak in the Oriflamme imperial court—pretty sure this point isn't up for debate, since no one ever speaks up in support of him despite the obvious injustice of his ill-treatment. His degree of influence in the court is much, much, so much less than any reasonable person might expect someone who is literally Bahamut and crown prince to have. The Council of Elders and other officials stand by haplessly while he is progressively stripped of power in favour of Olivier. Nobody defends him, nobody objects. (Or maybe some did, and were eliminated.) Even Dion himself submits to the abuse despite inherently superior abilities. Career politicians know which direction the winds blow—they don't defy their Empress, meaning they are either her cronies or too fearful of her to make themselves a target by any raising any opposition. Added to that is the implication that Dion was often away for long periods—and as Xiaoshu explicitly tells Jingyan in the drama, the crown prince cannot leave the imperial capital untended because that is the surest way to lose power. Dion may be Sanbreque's mightiest weapon and revered by the populace, but in practice his political sway is almost negligible. He is not able to leverage himself effectively.

Don't get me wrong, for these reasons I extra extra love the canon portrayal of J*** obeying Joshua against her wishes and T****** obeying Dion against his wishes—I absolutely think their obedience is, to them, the truest and highest and final demonstration of their love and understanding of their respective masters. And both Joshua and Dion expected no less from them. [I've not typed the names out just in case the search function ends up capturing the post and putting it in their tags, not because I hate those characters; I just don't want to be uncivil within fandom.]

But the very point here is that, you know, sometimes you aren't supposed to leave someone just because they say so. Sometimes it is the worst possible course of action to obey someone just because they command it. Sometimes it is undesirable at best and disastrous at worst to support someone's every decision out of unchanging (if uncharitable, one might even say unthinking) loyalty. That is a fundamentally unequal relationship, and while beautiful in its own way, is also uniquely doomed. The truth is, Joshua was always going to pull that trigger, and Dion was always going to pull that trigger: the master was always going to sever the relationship. Those pairs were doomed as soon as they began, because one party can only ever say yes, and yes means the end, you see? That is The End, that is the final break. By their very subordinate nature and by their established personalities within the game, "yes" is the one and only answer J*** and T****** can ever or will ever give. Their master will say, "Leave me", meaning it is over, and they will reply, "Yes, I obey". Because this is the only answer that proves their devotion, leaving them totally incapable of changing the script. Both J*** and T****** knew it and played their parts to perfection, and my heart hurts for them.

In NIF terms, I reckon J*** is Gong Yu, and T****** is Lie Zhanying. Zhanying will follow Jingyan to the end, whatever it may be—in fact in one episode he explicitly says so, and his loyalty is never in doubt. He will go to his death if Jingyan orders it. He will always support Jingyan's decisions. He and the rest of Jingyan's men have been following Jingyan even when the prince was out of favour and cold-shouldered and constantly dispatched to safeguard the country's frontiers—inconvenient places where comfort is low and the environment harsh. Jingyan's favoured brothers live in the lap of luxury within their palaces (like Olivier), while Jingyan himself (like Dion) has always been at war. And as with Zhanying, T****** will never be able to change this status quo on behalf of Jingyan (Dion). For all his boundless dedication to his lord, Zhanying will never be able to improve his prince's standing in the court, never be able to secure more political power for his prince (unless his prince decides to revolt/coup), never be able to make his prince's father love or prize his prince.

It is not a problem of character or willpower or desire. It is, simply put, a problem of power. It is a problem of class. The servant rises as their master rises, and falls as their master falls. In other words, the servant's status is determined by their master's status. Zhanying is Jingyan's deputy. When Jingyan's status was elevated, Zhanying naturally also assumed commandership over more troop divisions because those were allocated to the prince by the Liang Emperor. (There is no doubt in my mind that T******'s status as second-in-command is because of Prince Dion. He's too young to have earned that position by gradual promotion through meritorious accomplishment. Unless you're telling me that the knights dragoon don't have a single officer above age 30.) Zhanying is invaluable to Prince Jing in security, in warcraft, and in a variety of generic daily tasks. However, he is part of the rigid imperial system and lower in the hierarchy. He may persuade his lord, but he cannot order him. He may disagree, but he cannot defy. He may privately despise the Emperor/Empress, but he cannot show it and cannot act on it (literally treason). His role is to follow and obey. If he does not perform that role for whatever reason, he fundamentally negates his utility to his lord.

Ergo, endgame Jingyan is only possible because his true equal and soulmate, his real zhiji, came back to challenge the status quo. In fact, came back to challenge him. It is not merely the fact that this person understands him above all, it is also the fact that this person has the ability to act on that understanding. Jingyan is technically also Xiaoshu's prince, master, and eventual Emperor—so where is the difference?

The difference is, Lin Shu is comparable in nobility. Lin Shu is the cousin of princes and the incumbent Emperor's nephew, Lin Shu was raised amongst the imperial household, and played and studied and fought and hung out with them as peers of roughly equal rank. In this respect Joshua actually outstrips Lin Shu: Joshua is a prince by blood, and had Rosaria not fallen (especially if Sylvestre had not risen to the throne), would have been higher status than Dion. It's a massive pet peeve of mine that so many fans in XVI fandom don't seem to realise that Joshua was crown prince? Everybody knows Dion is crown prince, but do they realise Joshua is the original? In the English version prologue, the knights do call him "prince" and "your highness". The Rosarian throne is Joshua's by right of birth. At the time of their meeting as children, Joshua outranked Dion. They were equals as Dominants of their nation, but Dion back then was the child of a Cardinal and not the child of Sanbreque's ruler at that time; i.e. he was not a prince and not in line for the Sanbrequois throne.

The other wonderful similarity is Lin Shu's and Joshua's statuses as outsiders to the system when they reintroduce themselves to Jingyan/Dion. As Jingyan's strategist, Lin Shu has more leeway with regards to making his prince listen to him and take his advice. But importantly, he is now Mei Changsu, and that means he is able to play outside of the system. The imperial system effectively cast him out when it killed him. The strict codes of imperial conduct no longer chain him as they chain those confined within its structure. As a free agent unlike Zhanying, he has the right and privilege of choosing his own master. That includes the right to leave or to change his mind. And although the prince's strategist is supposed to be subordinate too, Xiaoshu would never truly be subordinate in the same fashion no matter how many times he bows his head, because at his core he is still high nobility and it still shines through despite everything. His manners are still perfect. He still navigates life with the easy expectation that people will serve him. He grabs the Duchess' hand and yells at Prince Jing and gloats at Marquis Ning. It's all the little ways that remind the audience, over and over, that this man was raised as a posh lordling. You can remove the boy from the upper class but you can't remove the upper class from the boy. It's the same with Joshua. His manners are still court-perfect. He still moves through life accepting that he will be served. He may bow his head to Dion and call him "your highness" but he also takes the liberty of throwing himself at Dion for a hug. Because to him, the prince is not some lofty and untouchable figure to be addressed with unfailing deference, he's just a friend.

(I know T****** is minor nobility, to be honest Zhanying definitely is too. The deputies of high level royals aren't going to be commoners. But I don't think I have to explain the gulf between ruling class/a close blood relative of the monarch versus lower nobility.)

Joshua too is an outsider that isn't beholden to Sanbreque's Emperor in the way that all of Dion and his knights owe their fealty. Again in this respect Joshua has it better than Xiaoshu—Joshua is his own sovereign master, and that should impact his perspective, his sense of self, and therefore his behaviour with others and how he navigates the world.

Gong Yu... I think anyone who's watched NIF will know exactly why I say that J***'s counterpart is Gong Yu lol. I think the s/h/u/a/t/e/s want her counterpart to be Princess (Duchess) Nihuang and they certainly produce fanwork in that vein, and I respect them for it because fans be doing what they love and hooray for that. But..... she's Gong Yu.

For all these reasons I am utterly obsessed with a Joshua that pushes back at Dion. The person able to challenge the status quo and challenge Dion. An equal who listens to Dion's absurd speech in the palace at Twinside and calls utter bullshit, who says, "A matter for the imperial family? are you joking? that's my mother, that's my younger brother. an imperial matter for you to resolve? say rather, our family, OUR problem to resolve. You don't get to go off half-cooked to arrest or kill my mother without actual political strategies, notwithstanding your military capability to launch a coup. And also, what about your dad? However much I love you, my darling Dion, we have to talk about the way that you insist on poor little meow meowing your awful father because my dear old mum didn't do Phoenix Gate alone and she for sure didn't immaculately conceive Olivier."

Endgame Dion isn't satisfactory in several glaring ways and it annoys me hugely that even unto the end he never grapples with and confronts the truth of his father instead of the idealised version that lives in his head. It's a little bizarre how Dion's arc is often praised by fans, since it feels very incomplete to me. Or, well, fine, perhaps just unsatisfying (since XVI simply isn't his story). His deep-seated need to be loved by his father prevents him from seeing anything clearly, which is so ironic for the only character to possess a third eye in canon? His honour and his might have been squandered in service to a selfish, uncaring, and objectively bad monarch, yet despite how earnestly Dion wants to be a good prince to his people he seems wholly incapable of recognising this fact? His mind repeatedly shies away from his father's shortcomings. In one scene he calls his father out for words befitting a tyrant, yet ultimately he persists in the belief that his father simply needs to be saved from Anabella's evil influence as if Sylvestre Lesage isn't a 50-year-old adult man who schemed his way to the throne and killed a woman's whole family and happily married that woman to beget legitimate offspring with her.

Soooo....... I've just spoiled the whole plot of my fic but it's really just NIF nonsense as usual and that is actually extremely predictable of me. But honestly the spoiling is not a big deal, because as with NIF, fundamentally my story is not meant to be plot-twisty and suspenseful—the real storytelling skill of the NIF drama is that the audience should be able to quickly grasp the overarching plot with no difficulty because the pleasure of this particular type of story is to watch the protagonist achieve their heart's desire, step by delicious step. The objective of this type of story is to properly pay off what it promises. NIF=the wronged protagonist seeks justice. We already know Lin Shu will obtain justice by the end of the tale, what we are here to enjoy is the journey! Same really for IEM I reckon; by the end of chapter 1 Joshua's goals should be really obvious, and since my little fic will have the happy ending tag because I only ever write happy endings, the audience basically knows he'll succeed—it's very much a journey not destination kind of story.

Ooof the post is crazy long and took me 3 nights to compose an answer and I haven't even managed to go into any TGCF elements but that work mainly contributes to characterisation instead of plot. One of the craziest XVI scenes was the Hideaway's sickbay after Twinside, the genuine regret Joshua expressed and how he blamed himself for not reaching out to Dion sooner; now the Empire and her prince lie in ruins etc. Surely he remembers this is the country that destroyed his own? Surely??? What kind of person, robbed of home and throne, can find it in himself to respond with so much empathy and kindness? Sanbreque has now experienced pretty much the same tragedy they inflicted on Rosaria two decades ago, and isn't that just the funniest parody of divine retribution? Instead of viewing this as Sanbreque's just deserts, Joshua Rosfield pities them and wishes he could have helped them avert this disaster.

Wonderfully Xie Lian-coded. Something something someone who has been through the worst and nevertheless chooses goodness and kindness. Someone who intimately understands the ugliest and lowest depths that people sink to, yet refuse to lose themselves in that temptation even when vengeance would seem perfectly justified.

You've known for a long time now that I love a Joshua who is very similar to his mother. This is why lol. It's about that delicious, delicious contrasting foil. It is the difference between Jun Wu & Xie Lian, as it is the difference between Anabella & Joshua. That the indestructible integrity we see from Xie Lian or Joshua didn't come easy, they weren't born perfect, their ethics were tested and forged and earned through suffering the likes of which most people will never know. The person that they have each become is the sum of their choices actively made. In the canon of TGCF and XVI, both of these ex-crown-princes live on in disgrace, in circumstances best described as reduced and humiliating, their respective kingdoms fallen, their wealth and glory spent—but they are better and braver human beings than everyone around them, they are beautiful and noble souls, quiet and unacknowledged, and only Hua Cheng and Dion truly see and fully understand that (and therefore cannot help but love them utterly).

I've a few more thoughts regarding Joshua swirling around as captured in other Xie Lian posts: here, here, here, and here. Not sure if you know TGCF or are into it as well, but just leaving links to those posts here for my own benefit too. I've been gravitating towards phoenixflare comparisons in various hualian meta posts since early 2024 so clearly these concepts have been stewing in my head for some duration, but I haven't fully teased out what it is about these two ships that gives me that niggling sense of connecting similarities.

My thoughts on episode 3, here we go...

This is by far my favourite Susie Eddie episode. There’s so much happening on the screen and underneath it.

Firstly we have Eddie at the gym asking for her and Jack (who ships them) I’ve been here long enough to know if the other characters ship the ship it’s going to happen at some point hahaha. The business or pleasure innuendo, he knows something is going on… perhaps it’s the first time Susie lets someone be part of the business and her LIFE too. He sees they spend a lot of time together… 

When he enters her office, he looks at some pics and you can feel they are comfortable around each other, there’s no need to be polite or formal… He’s definitely in his element as much as she is. When she asks about stealing the car I love how the roles switch you can see it in the way the interaction happens, he has the upper hand because she needs a favor that’s why he can set his conditions, he is relaxed and she’s apprehensive?? They are very close like there’s a kind of intimacy that feels beyond business partners?? And when they leave the gym and Jack is like why does dad think he is good asset? And she takes the time to look at him, analyzing him but also gives him a kind of god he’s handsome look?? and then gives the existential crisis reason… 

Again POWER COUPLE walk when they go and interrogate Jimmy. (very similar to the salon in episode 1 walk). I love how Eddie is behind, supporting her, and you can know when she’s addressing him during the whole interrogation because is always about decision making (she asks how they’ll find Gabrielle, moving her head to where Eddie is). When she gives an order is to Blanket and Keith. MARRIED alert!!!

Here comes the first scene, you can see there’s some banter/ UST/ attraction between them.  She knows he loves a good challenge and how to push his buttons because she is like are you getting cold feet? He is anything but a coward… She’s 100% flirty with him the outfit makes her feel powerful and you can tell!! They smirk at each other!!! GOD!! I was like can you kiss already!! Hot hot hot!!

After stealing the car he has this adrenaline rush he loves! He’s enjoying the whole experience and I think she knew this would happen… that’s why she pushed him… 

Next my favourite scene of these two!! He's covered in blood and she offers a wet wipe… While he talks she decides to help him get clean!! Something I assume she doesn't do with anyone!! She is removing the blood from his face!! If that’s not true love what is, right?? It's business talk as usual but he looks like he likes being taken care by her...? Even though he raises his voice a little bit… she continues to clean his face!!! like an argument of a married couple!! She looks at his lips? While cleaning him? HOT!! HOT!! And he ALLOWS her to do it!! Extremely intimate for just business partners… I can’t with these two!! It truly drives me crazy because she's a boss to everyone, trust me she won't clean anybody but she's doing it with HIM and he won't allow anybody to do that (he can do it on his own, they aren’t friends) but he just lets HER. Aagrrrr!!!

Then you see they are in different cars and she tries to bring him peace of mind and be prepared. She reassures him it's going to be alright!! Because she knows family/ his brother is important to him… again because it’s what’s important to her, ‘cause they are alike!! Just be together pleaaaseeee!!! 

When they meet Mercy!! Power couple again! He is and feels in charge. When Freddy is being threatened she looks at him, to gauge his reaction and when the machete scene happens she’s business as usual while Eddie is kind of disgusted but not very much hahahaha he toughened up.

I just love how Jimmy explains he's going to smoke in the evenings to BOTH OF THEM!! Like mom and dad need to know! Hahaha 

Comment aside… the last scene with Freddy when he says you did well, very The Godfather!!

I kinda have a lot of thoughts on this so I'll do a read more:

I agree though that those are pretty common tropes from what I've seen the past 8 years(?) and even back then I kinda was like "okay sure" and was neutral/not interested. Like I said, before Royal, I was pretty lukewarm about Goro so I didn't really think much about shipping him with the protagonist even though all my friends were doing so. I didn't ship Joker with anyone really, but I was sorta interested in kitashukita (my good friend at the time was into them)

Now having experienced Royal I can't help but feel like damn... I almost feel like it's disrespectful to do that to Goro but LOL everyone has their own delusions and things they like and can act on their self indulgence. What I hate is that they shove it down people's throats or they put down the other lane and call us OOC.

I don't have a good impression of the reverse lane. I don't know if it's because there are more people on that side that they have so many bad eggs. I've told this time and time again but it's still so surreal to me: the first time I EVER posted an akeshu drawing it was QRT'd by someone on reverse lane telling me to delete it, then I get some rando on bsky telling me to kms..? I've seen some public opinions too, putting down akeshu and saying we depict Joker too much like a bottom like they're not also guilty of doing those things to Goro but well what can you do.

I think we should all just stay in our lanes, and people who are reversible should respect people who have lanes instead of trying to make this a gauge in morality. We are making pixels kiss, you guys.

But yeah in terms of my tastes I made a post here before explaining what kind of tops I like and well, Goro fits this to a T.

23.5 Episode 11

Last week: Sun decided not to try to go to the US to stay with Ongsa (bad choice), Ongsa tried to pretend to her family that she wasn't dating Sun and Sun was upset and outed her to them (worse choice), Aylin explained some of her issues with people (I still have thoughts about that even though I never did get 'round to posting them), and Bambam finally got hit with that clue by four and it was very adorable (those cards of hers better tell her to jump into Nida's arms and kiss the hell out of her).

So, the coming out to the parents thing. That is Ongsa's choice. That shit can be rough. You never know how people in general will react, and it's worse when it comes to family because they can cut you in ways you don't expect. And if you're not ready, you're not ready. Period. That's a decision only you can make. It's incredibly unfair of Sun to just expect her to be ready because she is.

That said, I don't think that Sun is wrong to be hurt. It stings when you are being open and proud and happy and it feels like the person you care about is ashamed of you. It doesn't excuse blurting out that you're dating when they don't even know Ongsa likes girls yet. Like. You don't know the dynamic, girl. It's not your place. I understand it as an emotional reaction but I don't like it.

I don't think that it's very fair of her to blame Ongsa for her stupidly deciding to not try for the US exchange program because Ongsa never asked for that from her, but it does feel human. I appreciate that. I appreciate that Sun is finally starting to break down a little, because she feels like she keeps making concessions for Ongsa and yet Ongsa makes none for her.

Also I totally get Ongsa being worried about her parents not accepting that she's dating a girl, but they also seemed genuinely thrilled for Aylin that she's dating Luna. They also really didn't seem bothered at all by the indication that Ongas might too be with a girl. Still, that's a fucking scary thing to do. I understand why she hasn't and it sucks that the choice to go at her pace has been taken from her.

It's messy, in short. And kind of painfully human.

So I heard that in the novel Sun acts like Ongsa is right to believe that she is unworthy of her. I have to say that I really like that here, Sun is all about building Ongsa up and being so proud to be with her.

I do feel so much for Ongsa though. It's so hard to get yourself out of the mindset of criticism, of feeling not worthy, of thinking that you'll never be good enough. And that can wreck every relationship you ever get into, not just romantic ones, because it turns them into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And okay this is obviously gonna be a long one because we're not even ten minutes in yet and look at all those words.

Good girl Alpha. I love her. That's all. I love her and it's not just my thing for Ciize okay Alpha's great. Such a lovely big sister.

I will say I do genuinely like every member of this group. And I really appreciate how eager all of them are to make Aylin know she's welcome with them, especially after the last episode.

Parents are speaking sense, too. Way too many relationships fail because people don't want the person they're with, they want the person they could be. Or that they think that they should be. But I also feel like getting out of that sort of approach to them is a thing you tend to learn with age, too. Most of the time. There are people who are just really good at it right out of the gate, and there are those who never do learn. But for the most part it all balances out in the end, I think.

Okay good the exchange program is back on the table. As it should be. Yes banging that drum I can't help it. They might break up during a year apart because long distance relationships are rough. They might decide to break up before she leaves, even, to make it easier.

I love Katniss and Finnick’s friendship and thinking about what that would look like in any universe. Lost Girl is in The Odds universe and I’m sort of proud of how I told both Finnick’s version (Lost Girl) and Katniss’s version (In Our Favor - chapter 2) of their meeting and friendship (hopefully without feeling redundant)

I’m inflicted with them and they plague me until I can purge them from my system

You’ve sold me on Hayzelle and I’m dying to make that work in the background of a fic… if it never happens just know in most universes it’s what’s going on.

Outside of THG - how I would LOVE to be inspired to write North and South fluff… something based on the book ending instead of the miniseries - Margaret Hale deserves tomes of ‘delicious silence’ after what Gaskell puts her through (Mr. Thornton too)

Ugh I LOVE comments. It took me months of reading to be brave enough to start leaving comments - I shudder to think of the fics I absolutely loved but never noted back in the day.

I really appreciate them all - I still feel new here, so there have been a handful of times when established writers who I admire, (but haven’t interacted with on Tumblr) have commented on a fic and it’s very flattering (and a little terrifying)

I stopped watching Stranger Things halfway through season 3... I tried TWICE to continue watching it but somehow I just lost interest, like, I love Robin and Steve and Dustin and Hopper and the whole gang and the plot was interesting, but I just wasn't in the mood to keep watching it so I didn't.. I have a pretty good idea of what happens though (thank you random bloggers who post the plot through gifs and edits, you are the backbone of fandoms and the reason I know lots of things about lots of fandoms).

Anyway, so, I didn't see any eps with Eddie, like, cero. I know who he is, what he does, his ending... So when I started seeing Steddie as a ship I was like, yeah they look cute together ngl, next.

And it's been like that for some time now, until recently when you started reblogging tons of steddie things that my interest was picked, so I started reading some of the ffs you reblog and loving some fanarts...

And what can I say, I'm a hardcore shipper now, you turned me into a Steddie shipper hahahah I am motivated to watch the rest of the show just to meet Eddie and see firsthand his interactions with Steve and the gang.

I've been working on a very long dual-story fic for Steddie the past two months and reblogging all the other wonderful content here is the only way I've been able to scream about the ship. There is some serious A-Game writers and artists that are focused on them, there's a lot to enjoy for something that's only been a thing for like a year.

But thank you so much for telling me all of this 😭💕 I love hearing that I've converted people, it's such a badge of pride for me no matter the fandom. C: Season 04 is a _trip_ and I really enjoyed watching it even the first time through last year, so I hope you enjoy it just as much! (It's also kind of nice that you already know how it ends for Eddie, so there's no surprises, but tbh I have a lot of theories about that and what is going to happen in season 05 so... clown nose and shoes activated).
