She had been the love of his life. Quite literally. As a young man, falling in love with Katherine hadn't been true enough to count. For all he had loved her, he hadn't known her. There was too much of her hidden for Stefan to refer back as true love. Elena, he had loved in his death and her humanity. When her death came about, she changed. He tried not to think about how he'd been unable to, or how he slotted easily with humanity then he did with what he was supposed to be--- death. Then came Caroline. Who had been his friend before she'd been anything more. Who made him feel human without meaning to, without him realizing. Who, somehow in her own death, became more alive then anyone he had ever known.

They hadn't had an easy journey, and if Stefan had any regrets it would be that he hadn't figured it out sooner. For as much as he wished for more time by her side, he also couldn't regret what took him away from her. Not when it ensured the safety of Caroline herself, her daughters, his brother--- as much as it hurt to not even say goodbye truly.... she should be mad at him. Probably would be. He deserved it. Stefan knew he deserved her fury. He still wanted to hug her anyway. Then, in an instant, everything stopped at once when his eyes met hers, and the words slipped from his lips. "I'm so sorry." For every moment he couldn't be with her, for the scar he left on her heart, for the promises-- the vows he made, that hadn't been kept.

" well, stefan, i guess it's just in my nature. life's too short to dwell on the negatives, you know? plus, i've got some pretty powerful coping mechanisms – like a great support system, a healthy dose of sarcasm, and a love for kicking evil's butt. i mean, even witches need their moments to grumble and groan. trust me, it's not all sunshine and potions. " she's not always positive. it's only a facade she allows people to sees. there are moment in her life when she is negative though. example, when stefan's brother was around. he didn't had a good aura and it actually play tricks on her mood. there is also her, not showing traits of her personality. why should she lay all of her secrets out in the open when others looks at her with wary eyes? " it's easer to attract people as well. would you rather hang with a girl or a boy who is always pouting and who groans for nothing or with a girl or a boy who know how to have fun? "

Elena struggled to breath, her lips parted to draw in precious air, her hands over Stefan’s where he was holding on to her throat. Her back was against the cool, wooden walls of the Salvatore Boarding House, and she looked up at Stefan. There was nothing in his eyes, no love, or fear, or even anger. Just empty eyes sat within a pale, white skull.

This wasn’t her Stefan, she thought distantly. He didn’t have feelings. But, she reminded herself, that Damon had loved Katherine for a century without his humanity, Stefan could too.

“Stefan,” her voice was low, lower than normal, “please, you’re hurting me. I can’t breath.” Tears were stinging at her eyes, but she wasn’t sure why, “this….this isn’t you Stefan, you wouldn’t do this to me. I know you wouldn’t.” Even now, despite everything, this conviction was strong. There was nothing she believed in more.

Stefan would never hurt her.

Yet, he wouldn’t let her go. She was at his mercy, but she couldn’t find any in his eyes. “I love you Stefan, and I believe in you, I believe in us. You don’t want to kill me Stefan. Please don’t.”
