En esta ocasión, vuelvo otra vez a traer malas noticias sobre el país del sol naciente. Veo que la gente es muy burra y muy payasa por intentar ganar unos asquerosos likes de migrantes, comentarios, entre otras cosas, a través de la red social y dárselas de importante, de decir:Mira dónde he estado, mira lo que he hecho, solo con tal de llevar la atención y hacer el ridículo. Este tipo de gentuza no les importa, no les interesa la historia ni la cultura ni nada en absoluto, nada que tenga que ver con alguno de estos puntos mencionados anteriormente o algo similar; solo van a estos países, sobre todo al país desconocido o a países circundantes, porque están de moda y porque está en la sensación máxima ir para quedar bien y decir ante tus amigos o conocidos, Mirad dónde he ido y tú no. Por culpa de gentuza y de peña así, determinadas áreas del país del sol naciente están siendo vetadas para los turistas. Esto no quiere decir que los japoneses odien a los extranjeros y menos a los turistas; lo que odian son determinadas acciones o actitudes de dichos turistas, como subirse, por ejemplo, a la estatua de un perro icónico llamado Hachiko en frente de a estación de Shibuya.

O por ejemplo como el caso de la chilena inculta e inmadura por hacer el postureo en un lugar sagrado para los japoneses para mí es una calumnia y una blasfemia lo que ha hecho la chilena y además para mí es un insulto lo que los turistas están llegando a hacer en Japón convirtiéndolo en un parque de atracciones por favor parad ya de hacer el gilipollas o el imbécil en un país dejad que vaya gente que realmente valore y aprecie cultura, valores costumbres de un país. Temo postear esto en 2025; la raza humana da vergüenza.

On this occasion, I am back again with bad news about the country of the rising sun. I see that people are very stupid and very clownish trying to gain some disgusting likes from migrants, comments, among other things, through the social network and acting like they are important, saying: Look where I've been, look what I've done, just to attract attention and make a fool of themselves. These types of scum don't care, they are not interested in history or culture or anything at all, nothing that has to do with any of these points mentioned above or anything similar; they only go to these countries, especially to the unknown country or surrounding countries, because they are fashionable and because it is the ultimate feeling to go there to look good and say to your friends or acquaintances, Look where I've been and you haven't. Because of scum and people like that, certain areas of the country of the rising sun are being banned for tourists. This doesn't mean that the Japanese hate foreigners and even less tourists; what they hate are certain actions or attitudes of said tourists, such as climbing, for example, the statue of an iconic dog called Hachiko in front of Shibuya station.

Or for example, like the case of the uneducated and immature Chilean woman for posing in a sacred place for the Japanese. For me, what the Chilean woman has done is slander and blasphemy, and for me, what tourists are doing in Japan by turning it into an amusement park is an insult. Please stop being an idiot or an imbecile in a country. Let people who really value and appreciate the culture, values, and customs of a country go there. I'm afraid to post this in 2025; the human race is shameful.

Japan Housing Websites (part two)
Want to move to Japan? Me too! A while ago, I made a post with some key vocabulary for navigating Japanese real estate websites. This time, I'd like to highlight vocabulary that will help you refine the search results until you find the perfect house.
After selecting the property type and narrowing down the area to search, you'll eventually be presented with a list of houses. Here's a convenient link to a list of houses in Tokyo so you can follow along: TOKYO(SUUMO)
Search & Sort Functions
The orange number at the top of the screen tells you how many total properties were found with your search.
The upper options all have to do with displaying the search results.

~The difference between the endings “だ(da)/です(desu)” and “なのだ(nano-da)/なのです(nano-desu)/なんだ(nan-da)/なんです(nan-desu)/んだ(n-da)/んです(n-desu)” in Japanese sentences~
Simple affirmative sentences in Japanese usually end with “だ/da” or “です/desu”, but there are also sentences where “の/no” “なの/nano” or “ん/n” “なん/nan” is added before them to make it “のだ/no-da”“なのだ/nano-da” or “んです/n-desu”“なんです/nan-desu”.
The role of “なの/nano” “の/no” and “なん/nan” “ん/n” is to emphasize. You can add them when you want to emphasize, like when telling a surprising fact to the listener, or when you want to pique the listener’s interest and then explain in more detail.

When you want to say something normal, you don’t add them.
「猫猫(まおまお)は後宮(こうきゅう)で働(はたら)く下女(げじょ)だ/です」
Maomao is a servant girl working in the rear palace.
「猫猫は後宮で下女として働いている/います」
Maomao works as a servant girl in the rear palace.

If you use “の/no” or “なの/nano” in the second half of the sentences, you can emphasize the second half;
「猫猫は後宮で働く下女だが/ですが、本職(ほんしょく)は薬屋(くすりや)なのだ/なのです」
Maomao is a servant girl working in the rear palace, but HER REAL JOB IS as an APOTHECARY.
「猫猫は後宮で下女として働いているが/いますが、実(じつ)は誘拐(ゆうかい)されてそこに売(う)り飛(と)ばされたのだ/のです」
Maomao works as a servant girl in the rear palace, but SHE WAS ACTUALLY KIDNAPPED and SOLD there.

On the other hand, if you want to emphasize the first half of the sentences, add “の/no” or “なの/nano” to the end of the first half.
「猫猫は後宮で働く下女なのだ/なのですが、本職は薬屋だ/です」
Maomao IS a SERVANT GIRL WORKING IN the REAR PALACE, but her real job is as an apothecary.
「猫猫は後宮で下女として働いているのだ/のですが、実は誘拐されてそこに売り飛ばされた/ました」
Maomao WORKS AS a SERVANT GIRL in the REAR PALACE, but she was actually kidnapped and sold there.

The sentences are not incorrect even if “の/no” or “なの/nano” is not added. It’s OK in case the speaker doesn’t want to emphasize anything or the listener already knows the fact.
「猫猫は後宮で働く下女だが/ですが、本職は薬屋だ/です」
「猫猫は後宮で下女として働いているが/いますが、実は誘拐されてそこに売り飛ばされた/ました」

However, “なの/nano” or “の/no” is very formal or manly ways of saying, mainly used in written language or spoken in formal situation. So, in spoken language of daily conversation, “なん/nan” or “ん/n”, that sounds casual or soft, is mostly used instead. The difference in usage between “なの/nano” and “の/no”, and “なん/nan” and “ん/n” is as follows;
<Nouns: 「+なの/nano」「なん/nan」>
formal 「薬屋なのだ/なのです」「下女なのだ/なのです」
casual/soft 「薬屋なんだ/なんです」「下女なんだ/なんです」
<Verbs: 「+の/no」「+ん/n」>
formal 「売り飛ばされたのだ/のです」「働いているのだ/のです」
casual/soft 「売り飛ばされたんだ/んです」「働いているんだ/んです」
<Adjectives>
formal:「basic form + “の/no”」
背(せ)が高(たか)い: tall...「彼(かれ)は、とても背が高いのだ/のです」: He is very tall.
casual/soft: 「basic form + “ん/n”」
可愛(かわい)い: cute...「彼女(かのじょ)の笑顔(えがお)は、すごく可愛いんだ/んです」: Her smile is so cute.
Similarly, the words whose basic form end in “な/na”, such as 「きれいな: beautiful」 and 「上手(じょうず)な: good, well」, become 「きれいな+のだ/のです/んだ/んです」and「上手な+のだ/のです/んだ/んです」.

Whether it is formal or casual/soft depends a lot on the personality of the speaker. For example, KNH’s characters are…
<Gaoshun> Since he always speak in formal way, he uses “なの” or “の”.

Gaoshun “Jitsuwa, chijinga taiso komatte-ori-mashite… Taihen myona hanashi nano-desuga…”
Gaoshun “Well, an acquaintance of mine is very concerned. It’s a very strange situation, but…”
<Jinshi> He generally speaks casually to Maomao, but he speaks formally when discussing serious work-related topics.
壬氏「フゥ…。というわけで、風明が自首してきたのだが、何か知らないか?」(serious topic)
Jinshi “Fu… To-iu-wakede, Fonminga jishu shite Kitano-daga, nanika shiranaika?”
Jinshi “And so, Fengming turned herself in. Do you know anything about it?”
壬氏「ある武官からもらったものなんだが、味見してくれないか?」(casual)
Jinshi “Aru bukan-kara moratta mono nandaga, ajimi shite kurenaika?”
Jinshi “I received these from a certain military officer. Can you taste them?”
<Maomao> She usually speaks casually, but sometimes formally when talking to herself about serious topics.
猫猫「ん?酒を蒸留しています。何度も蒸留させると、濃いアルコールが取れるんです」(casual)
Maomao “N? Sake’o joryu-shite-imasu. Nandomo joryu-saseruto, koi arukōruga torerun-desu.”

In the first place, the reason I wrote this post was because I received a question about 「んだろうか」 in Maomao’s line 「おやじ、ちゃんと飯(めし)食(く)ってんだろうか」: “I wonder if Dad’s eating properly.” This line is very rough and manly. If another character were to say the same line, the way they said it would probably be different;
①Maomao – おやじ、ちゃんと飯食って(+る)んだろうか (very rough)
②Jinshi/Gaoshun/Basen – 父上(ちちうえ)は、ちゃんと食事(しょくじ)をしている(+の)だろうか (formal & noble & manly)
③Concubine Gyokuyou/Lihua – お父様(とうさま)、ちゃんと食事をとっている(+の)かしら (formal & noble & feminine)
④Yinghua/Ailan/Guiyuan - お父(とう)さん、ちゃんとご飯(はん)食(た)べてる(+の)かしら(casual & feminine)
⑤Xiaolan - お父さん、ちゃんとご飯食べてる(+の)かなぁ?(casual & friendly)
おやじ/父上/お父さん = Dad
ちゃんと = properly
飯食って(る)/食事をしている/食事をとっている/ご飯食べてる = is eating
ん/の = (emphasizing. You can omit it, if you don’t want to emphasize.)
だろうか/かしら/かなぁ? = I wonder if
When I broke the sentence like above, I couldn’t tell whether the “ん/n” in Maomao’s line 「食ってんだろうか」 meant emphasizing or just speaking roughly.
A.「食ってるだろうか」→「食ってんだろうか」(without “の/no” - just saying roughly)
B.「食ってるのだろうか」→「食ってるんだろうか」→「食ってんだろうか」(with “の/no” and changed to “ん/n” due to rough speaking - emphasizing)
I think it’s one of A and B above, but I can’t say for sure. Maybe it’s something only the author or Maomao herself knows. Either way, it’s a pretty rough way of speaking.
By the way, concerning above ③④⑤ examples, the feminine/soft ending “かしら/kashira” and “かな/kana” always combine with “の/no”, not “ん/n”. 「~のかしら」 and 「~のかな」 work, but 「~んかしら」 and 「~んかな」 doesn’t.

I’ve covered quite a lot of detail, and I wonder if I was able to make you understand me well in English. I’ve never studied to teach Japanese, so I’m sorry if I’m not explaining things well.
When you watch anime with English translation, you probably won’t notice much difference, but spoken language of the original Japanese lines varies greatly depending on the character’s gender, age, position, personality, and even their relationship with the person they’re speaking to. So, if you can notice the differences in the way they speak, you’ll be able to understand the characters more deeply. Fansub release + translation notes for Utena ep 22!
さすがに何でもよく知ってるわね。でもそれだけの情報網があるなら、早く奴らの正体も突き止めて欲しいわ。
You know everything, don’t you Juri? With such a vast intelligence network, I wish you’d hurry up and find out these people’s true identities. (literal translation)
You know everything, don’t you Juri? I wish you'd put your little birdies to work finding out just who is behind this. (final translation)
情報網 (jouhoumou) is an interesting word to use here! It literally means “intelligence network”, so Nanami is implying that Juri has a bunch of spies feeding her everytthing that happens at the school. To actually use the word “intelligence network” sounds a little but out of place in English though, so I rephrased the line a little to sound more conversational and accusatory.
Boy: しばらく消えないでしょうね、根室教授。 Nemuro: ん?なんだい? Boy: 雪の事ですよ、教授。
Boy: Won't disappear for a while still, eh, Professor Nemuro? Nemuro: I beg your pardon? Boy: I was talking about the snow, Professor.
There’s a double meaning in the first line here — the boy could reasonably be talking about the Professor himself not clearing out for a while. That was actually my original phrasing: “Won’t clear out for a while” but Anya suggested “disappear” which is actually much closer to the original Japanese phrasing so I changed it to that. I think this exchange preserves that passive aggressive dig at the Professor pretty well!
あの人は花が散るのを見たくないんですよ。こうすれば短い命の花も少しは長持ちさせることができる。でも、こうまでして永らえても花自身は嬉しいんでしょうか?
She hates it when the petals begin to fall. This way even a short-lived flower can be made to last a little longer. But… I wonder how the flowers feel about their existence being prolonged like this.
This is one of my favourite exchanges in the show! I think this really emphasises how Japanese sentence structure and general way of phrasing things differs drastically from English. A literal translation of the first sentence would be something like “That person does not want to see flowers scatter”. Each part of the sentence sounds weird if translated individually:
あの人 - “that person” being used because Japanese prefers that phrasing to third person pronoun “she”.
花が散る - “flowers scatter” is the most natural way to say “petals fall/die” in Japanese but sounds very odd in English
見たくないんですよ - “does not want to see X” also sounds very funny when translated directly to English, but simply conveys the idea that she doesn’t like seeing something happen.
When taken as a whole, complete idea though, the sentence can easily be translated into something that sounds natural in English: “She hates it when the petals begin to fall.”
The hardest part of this to translate was the last sentence. I originally had translated it like this: “So much work to make them last, and yet I wonder if the flowers themselves are happy.”
こうまでして - to go this far/to put in this much effort/to put in this much work. However, this is more of a tone setting phrase than a meaning carrying phrase, so it’s okay not to translate it directly.
永らえる - to prolong something’s lifespan. This is hard to translate because while the phrasing works in Japanese, the preserved flowers are actually dead. So you can’t translate it as “I wonder how the flowers feel about being made to live so long” or something of that ilk. My original translation of “make them last” works, but I prefer the final translation of “existence being prolonged”. It sounds more applicable to Mamiya’s situation, and this exchange is all about that metaphor.
永遠に憧れる心が美しく思えたりするだけだ。
(lit.) We just think of a heart that longs for eternity as beautiful. (??)
We just romanticise the idea of eternity.
Another great example of Japanese phrasing that sounds super weird when translated directly, but can sound very natural when the core idea behind the words is translated properly. “Romanticise” is such a succinct one-word translation of the several word phrase 「憧れる心が美しく思えたり」!

やばい Alternatives | Vocab
Step 1 of 「伝える力」 が伸びる! 12歳までに知っておきたい語彙力図鑑 focuses on teaching you synonyms for words you would typically use to describe your emotions. There are synonyms for words like やばい, エモい, and the like. This particular post will focus on the information that they've given about やばい。
The book also ranks the words' difficulty level, with 1 star being an "of course you know this" to 5 stars being "even adults probably don't know this and you're about to blow them away with your vocabulary and make them pull out their dictionary." Because of this, you may see words that you encountered quickly as a Japanese learner (that a native speaker 12 year old may not have encountered yet) and vice versa on the list below.
やばい
Because やばい is a word that can be used to express nearly any emotion (much like how OMG can be used in many contexts in American English), the book did also make sure to put the contexts in which the alternative word would be appropriate.
危うい (あやうい)- dangerous; in danger; facing imminent danger ❖This is to be used when dangerous situations are imminent. The way they described it was "危険が迫っている状態" ▶︎Their example: 危うい所でピンチを脱出した。
危険 (きけん)- dangerous; risky; uncertain; precarious; in danger ❖This is to be used when a situation may lead to not-so-good/dangerous outcomes. ▶︎Their example: そんなに高い所からジャンプしたら、危険だよ。
驚異的 (きょういてき)- wonderful; astounding; marvelous ❖This is to be used when something passes a level of surprise that you can express. ▶︎Their example: 大谷選手の達成した記録は驚異的だ。
最高 (さいこう)- best; supreme; wonderful; highest; maximum; supreme ❖This is to be used when describing something of the highest status/dignity/ranking. (This is relative in comparison to other things.) ▶︎Their example: 夏休みに友達と見に行った映画が、最高に面白かった。
素晴らしい (すばらしい)- wonderful; splendid; magnificent ❖ This is used to describe something that's elegant/praiseworthy/splendid, things that are desirable, and things that admirable. ▶︎Their example: 富士山の山頂から眺める景色は、息をのむほどに素晴らしい。
Yojijukugo (四字熟語)
This section also includes four-character compound idioms (yojijukugo) that can be associated with the word we're focusing on expanding our vocabulary from.
絶体絶命 (ぜったいぜつめい)- desperate situation with no escape; being driven into a corner; being cornered; last extremity ❖ You would use this when you find yourself in a situation that there's no conceivable way you could think of making it out in the way that you truly desire. ▶︎Apparently you can use it in phrases like this 「絶体絶命のピンチ」 BONUS: I found an example online that also uses it to mean "stalemate" and the example is a cop and a suspect both pointing a gun at each other.
最上無二 (さいじょうむに)- there is nothing else like it in this world; it's an unparalleled marvel ❖They listed this one at 5 stars (aka, the adults are gonna be surprised that you know this and also go look it up) and I can certainly see why--I couldn't find any official English translations of it. Here's the definition the book gave: この世に二つとなく、最もすばらしいこと。「最上」は最もすぐれていること、「無二」は同じ物がないことを意味するよ。

JLPT Grammar みたいだ・らしい・っぽい
What is the difference in usage among みたいだ、らしい、and っぽい? These grammar points can be difficult to differentiate, so I have gathered some notes and examples here. These grammar points are JLPT N4 or N3 grammar points.
★みたいだ★
Used for first-hand information or information you are observing for yourself.
Often used for something that has characteristics of something else (metaphorical similarities).
Most common in spoken language.
ここの砂は星みたいな形をしている。 ここ の すな は ほし みたいな かたち を して いる。 The grains of sand here are in the shape of a star.
このアパートは誰も住んでいないみたいだ。 この アパート は だれ も すんで いない みたい だ。 It looks like no one lives in this apartment building.
明日は雨みたいね。 あした は あめ みたい ね。 It looks like rain tomorrow.
リンさんみたいに日本語がうまくなりたい。 I want to be able to speak Japanese as well as Lin.

Used for things you infer, or information you have from another source.
Often used to something that has especially strong characteristics of its group (stereotypical similarities).

Can be used to say what something is like.
Can be used to say that something appears to be the opposite of what you would expect.
Can be used to describe something that someone is likely to do or often does.
Note:
When following a noun or い-adjective, the meaning is similar to -ish, -like, -ly. The number of adjectives that can be used with this grammar are limited. Usually negative when used after a noun or adjective, but not always.
When following a verb, the meaning is easy to do, often do. This grammar cannot be used with all verbs.
あの小学生は大人っぽい。 あの しょうがくせい は おとなっぽい。 That elementary school student acts like an adult.

Regarding the last Arcana in Persona 3
For those that are curious, this post serves as a clarification on the somewhat misunderstood final battle and all that happened in there… as well as a revision of the atrociously written imgur I created some years ago. It also contains some minor spoilers from other gamers, but hopefully nothing major.
Now, with that said, let’s begin with the first mention of the Universe in P3: Edogawa’s explanation of the major arcanas.
“この“愚者”から始まり“宇宙”で終わる22枚の大アルカナは... 番号順に一つの連続した物語になっていて、 それ自身が人間の成長過程を表しています。人間の苦難や、変節、成功... 文字通り、 人生の線図があります。カードがそれぞれ、人が人になるため、必要な要素をあらわしてんですねえ。大事ですから、22枚のカードを一つ一つ見てみましょうか。 [...] そして最後の“宇宙”。やがてたどりつく、あなた自身の場所です。”
“Beginning with the 'Fool' and ending with the “Universe”, the 22 major arcanas are one continuous story in numerical order, which itself represents the process of human development. The hardships, betrayals and successes of humans… Literally, they are a diagram of life. Each card represents the necessary elements for a person to become an individual. Since they’re that important, let's look at each of the 22 cards, shall we? [...] At last, it’s the Universe. It’s your own place that you’ll eventually reach.”
As you can see, the explanation in japanese is somewhat different from the one we got in the english version of both FES and Portable:
“Beginning with "The Fool" and ending with "The World"... they tell a story in numerical order that is a metaphor of an individual's journey through life. Each Major Arcana represents a stage on that journey... an experience that the individual must incorporate to realize his oneness. They are all important, so let's take a look at each of the 22 cards, one by one. [...] The final card is The World, which represents the individual's full awareness of his place in the world.”
Though, despite being worded differently, both explanations refer to the same fundamental process: the journey of individuation. This concept belongs to the branch of psychology founded by Carl Jung, analytical psychology, from which almost all ideas of the series come from (i.e., Shadow, Persona, Demons, etc. I recommend watching Edogawa’s extras on P4G), and it's defined as the “development of consciousness out of the original state of identity”, integrating the contents of the personal and collective unconscious with the goal of attaining psychological healing and unity, thus achieving or at least getting close to the archetype known as the Self, which is nothing but the totality of the psychic contents and processes of an individual – everything.
It’s no brainer to compare such process with the Fool’s journey used in the modern trilogy, with several of Jung’s students and scholars establishing the relation:
“Like paintings, these Trumps are so-called projections holders, meaning simply that they are hooks to catch the imagination. Speaking psychologically, projection is an unconscious, autonomous process whereby we first see in the persons, objects, and happenings in our environments those tendencies, characteristics, potentials and shortcomings that really belong to us. We people the exterior world with the witches and princesses, devils and heroes of the drama buried in our own depths.” - Jung and Tarot: An Archetypal Journey, Sallie Nichols.
Such is one example, and there are many more if you look at the section of literature regarding Jung’s theory and tarot, which fits wonderfully with the japanese explanation. However, the english one isn’t wrong by any means, since such a description still fits with how Jung explained the process of individuation:
“The unio mentalis, then, in psychological as well as in alchemical language, means knowledge of oneself. In contradistinction to the modern prejudice that self-knowledge is nothing but a knowledge of the ego, the alchemists regarded the self as a substance incommensurable with the ego, hidden in the body, and identical with the image of God. This view fully accords with the Indian idea of purusha-atman. The psychic preparation of the magisterium as described by Dorn is therefore an attempt, uninfluenced by the East, to bring about a union of opposites in accordance with the great Eastern philosophies, and to establish for this purpose a principle freed from the opposites and similar to the atman or tao. Dorn called this the substantia coelestis, which today we would describe as a transcendental principle. This “unum” is nirdvandva (free from the opposites), like the atman (self).” - Mysterium Coniunctionis
The process of individuation, due to its integration of the collective unconscious or collective memory of all life, it’s equal to the mythological process of cosmic union or henosis: becoming one with the cosmos’ underlying nature. This means the Universe, as the end point of the Fool’s journey, is the embodiment of the universe as a whole, which is referenced in-game
“Hmm... I see nothing in you... It seems you no longer need your fortune told... All potentials are within you... You can go anywhere, become anything... The universe is within you... And you are within the universe... You and the universe are one and the same... That is my belief…” - Fortune Teller, P3
It’s important to note the same Fortune Teller, in a previous prediction, also identified the World as an equivalent to the Universe, meaning the english translation isn’t entirely wrong (and that all I’ve written applies to the World too). Furthermore, we have this explanation on Edogawa’s part:
“Now, one of the most important ideas of Kabbalah is the Tree of Life, formed of the ten Sefirot. Most illustrations depict it as a chart shaped like a tree. The 10 stages represented by the Sefirot… and the 22 paths connecting them represent the stages of Creation God formed from his own self, as well as the direction in which humanity should evolve. Where did we come from? Where are we going? These answers lie in the Sefirot. [...] By the way, did you all notice that I said there were 22 paths? Yes, that's right. The same number as the Major Arcana I spoke about earlier.”
The tree of life is one of the most common symbols of western (and jewish) mysticism, commonly syncretized with the 22 major arcanas to create a sort of system that allows people to rejoin the ineffable godhead – called Ein Sof (funnily enough) – at the root of everything. That’s to say, it’s another symbol of individuation, with even Jung interpreting the tree itself, with no connection to tarot, as such:
“The figure of Tifereth belongs to the Sefiroth system, which is conceived to be a tree. Tifereth occupies the middle position. Adam Kadmon is either the whole tree or is thought of as the mediator between the supreme authority, En Soph, and the Sefiroth. The black Shulamite in our text corresponds to Malchuth as a widow, who awaits union with Tifereth and hence the restoration of the original wholeness. [...] In the Cabalistic view Adam Kadmon is not merely the universal soul or, psychologically, the “self,” but is himself the process of transformation, its division into three or four parts (trimeria or tetrameria).” - Mysterium Coniunctionis.
This means that, in jungian terms, the tree of life (which is equal to the archetypal man in jewish esoteric thought) is both a symbol of the process and of the result at the same time, strengthening the cosmic and personal nature of the major arcanas within the series, being symbols of the individual soul’s journey and of aspects of the world at large. Naturally, the Universe, as the culmination and integration of all arcanas, is nothing but the very own archetypal tree and man embodied, the potentiality of life realized as Aleister Crowley described it, the founder of Thelema and creator of the Thoth Tarot from where the Universe comes:
“In the card itself there is consequently a glyph of the completion of the Great Work in its highest sense, exactly as the Atu of the Fool symbolizes its beginning. The Fool is the negative issuing into manifestation; the Universe is that manifestation, its purpose accomplished, ready to return. The twenty cards that lie between these two exhibit the Great Work and its agents in various stages. The image of the Universe in this sense is accordingly that of a maiden, the final letter of Tetragrammaton.” - Book of Thoth.
As the final arcana, the Universe is also the end of existence and its meaning. It’s the full realization of the primordial nothingness that the Ein Sof is, not through being anything in particular but through being everything that has existed and exists, thus truly being nothing. Naturally, this aspect of the Universe is also referenced in P3, though in the movies this time:
“You have acquired the answer, I presume? [...] Right now, you just might arrive at the Answer to Life. [...] Are you aware? An arcana is an entity that reveals one’s entire life. Those who have taken possession of them, and said to have truly lived, are able to arrive at the Answer.” - Elizabeth
It’s very obvious the answer that Makoto and Kotone arrived at is the meaning of life and existence itself, of the unconscious godhead that created the world (i.e., the arcanas and humanity) from its essence. Such an understanding can only be born from the full integration of the archetypes that compose the universe (i.e., the human experience), which means becoming one with it – the individual soul merging with the anima mundi.
“As a result of the complete detachment of all affective ties to the object, there is necessarily formed in the inner self an equivalent of objective reality, or a complete identity of inside and outside, which is technically described as tat tvam asi (that art thou). The fusion of the self with its relations to the object produces the identity of the self (atman) with the essence of the world (i.e., with the relations of subject to object).” - Psychological Types.
This is also mentioned by Igor during the Universe’s scene, though it was mistranslated as “space” when the original was “宇宙”, which was used by Edogawa to refer to the thelemite Universe. In that scene, Igor also described the card as “全ての始まりの力であり、そして、全てを終える力でもあります”, or “the power of the beginning of all, and the power the will end it all”, referencing the nature of the Universe as the embodiment of the ineffable creator and its final realization – the union of opposites that characterizes the Self.
“The archetype of the self has, functionally, the significance of a ruler of the inner world, i.e., of the collective unconscious. The self, as a symbol of wholeness, is a coincidentia oppositorum, and therefore contains light and darkness simultaneously.” - Symbols of Transformation.
“When it represents a complexio oppositorum, a union of opposites, it can also appear as a united duality, [...] Empirically, therefore, the self appears as a play of light and shadow, although conceived as a totality and unity in which the opposites are united” - Psychological Types
“Hmm... I feel a strange aura around you... In my mind, I see visions... People's past, present, and future... For most people, I see clearly, and far ahead... But you are different... Your future is filled with both blinding light and stagnant shadow... I can see but a small portion... What lies beyond that is shrouded in mystery.” - Fortune Teller, P3
By nature then, the power of the Universe may not necessarily refer to only the physical one, but to its psychological analogous as well: the collective unconscious. This is supported by Elizabeth’s route in Arena, where the japanese version refers to the collective unconscious as “内なる宇宙” or “inner universe”, a term both used in the P3 Club Book, in the protagonist’s profile, and in the very own description of the Great Seal: “内なる宇宙を開放し、死の母星ニュクスを封印する力” (“Release the inner universe, the power to seal the mother planet of Death, Nyx”).
However, calling the collective unconscious an “(inner) universe” isn’t exclusive to P3, because P2 did it as well. Firstly, the party in IS collectively confused the Sea with “宇宙” in the japanese version (I wouldn’t say it’s mistranslated in english however, just that the nuance is lost), and then Virochana came in Tatsuya’s Scenario saying the following:
“Thy reflection on the water’s surface: that is thy Brahman, the truth of the universe, which is in turn thine Atman. Thou thyself art the universe, and thine self is itself the light that illuminates the soul.”
Due to his nature as an archetype, Virochana is speaking purely symbolically here, referencing only a psychological reality and not a physical one, and since Jung understood the Atman and Brahman as symbols of the Self, further explanation is not needed. And by that matter, the following section, the one with the archetype of Buddha, doesn’t contradict that conclusion, since Jung also acknowledges buddhahood as another symbol of the Self.
“Hence in its scientific usage the term “self” refers neither to Christ nor to the Buddha but to the totality of the figures that are its equivalent, and each of these figures is a symbol of the self.” - Psychology and Alchemy.
And I don’t think I’ve to delve into Philemon’s whole schtick about humanity understanding its “purpose” or, in japanese, “存在意義” – the “meaning of [its] existence”. Tatsuya’s Scenario doubles down on that, with Philemon’s avatar, Nodens, literally saying humanity should try to understand the meaning of why life exists, with the option of denying the meaning of life giving you Death cards. The writers aren’t really that subtle in trying to say Makoto’s/Kotone’s “answer to life” is the “meaning of existence” stated by Philemon.
So all in all, this means the Universe is the collective unconscious itself. Not a fragment of it, or just holding a part of its power, but ALL of it. And at the same time, it’s also the full realization of it, the dispersal of all unconsciousness and primitiveness into an harmonic whole that knows itself, equal in every sense to the incarnation and realization of the Ein Sof within the tree of life. It’s the archetype of all humanity (i.e., the source of the previously mentioned Adam Kadmon) and life, their potentiality and meaning, their purpose.
“Not only do things appear personified as human beings, but the macrocosm personifies itself as a man too. ‘The whole of nature converges in man as in a centre, and one participates in the other, and man has not unjustly concluded that the material of the philosophical stone may be found everywhere.’”- Alchemical Studies
“This place called Kadath Mandala is constructed in the shape of a hexagram, containing an older pentagram emblem. The hexagram represents the vast macrocosm of space and the pentagram is a symbol of the microcosm known as humanity.” - Cat Lieutenant General Zula, Gone Without Trace, Tatsuya’s Scenario.
That’s why Igor was so surprised at someone achieving the Universe. That’s why he said that “nothing is beyond your reach”. Because the Universe is the “godhead”, the collective and unconscious soul of life, finally realized. The manifestation of what once created a future out of a certain death… out of what can be better described as the primordial nothingness that precedes creation
“I see nothing... No... What I see is nothingness... It is the void... But do not lose heart... Emptiness is not necessarily the end... The void is infinite... As is the universe... Whether this marks an end to all things, or a beginning... It is in your hands…” – Fortune Teller, P3
If the Universe is the full realization of life and the collective unconscious, then “Nyx” can be understood as its origin, as pure unconsciousness, neither stagnant nor chaotic, but both at the same time. Such universality is actually supported by the developers themselves, with Soejiro even stating the following in regards to Tartarus:
“This was drawn with the notion that the higher you climb in Tartarus, the deeper you delve into the subconscious. It also reflects the fact that Tartarus and the Shadows are one in the same since they both represent the human psyche.” - Art of Persona 3
And it’s important to keep in mind Tartarus has seven blocks: Thebel, Arqa, Yabbashah, Tziah, Harabah, Adamah… and Eretz, its rooftop. Each name is derived from one of the seven earths Adam wandered after being expelled from the Garden according to jewish folklore, meaning each block represents a more primitive and ancient layer of the unconscious until the origin of humanity, the Garden of Eden, beyond Eretz is reached... Beyond the first earth and upmost floor of Tartarus, within Nyx’s own body. And I genuinely don’t think I’ve to explain the significance of the Star Eater’s core being a golden egg in this context, when such an object is common through a majority of creation myths.
Even more, returning to the tree of life, we have to look at the P3 x P4 World Analyze (transcriptions kindly uploaded by Elle-P), which states that every block of Tartarus also symbolizes the different sephirot of the tree, with the whole tower representing the body of the godhead being hanged upside-down. In particular, Eretz is said to represent Binah, Chokmah and Kether, the three highest sephirot, meaning that Nyx’s body exists beyond the tree of life itself, and only the Ein Sof exists beyond it…
(Well, the Ain and Ain Soph Aur exist beyond as well, but they aren’t that important)
Now, I could go on about the symbolism of Nyx and the protagonists, but that would only keep supporting what I’ve written so far, that the Star Eater may indeed be the most primitive, oldest form of the collective unconscious, being the anima mundi or “light” that shattered at the beginning of time to allow the creation of the universe (i.e., life and consciousness). “She” is the Sophia turned into demiurge that must be rescued by its own creation – by itself.
Then, the final confrontation between the protagonists and Nyx isn’t only for the sake of present life, but also for all that has existed previously and its legacy, even Nyx itself. It’s the affirmation of life’s meaning and purpose against what once was and wishes to return to… and what must be ultimately confronted. It’s both the separation from everything that has happened, and its acceptance and forgiveness. That’s why the Universe can’t really go against Nyx, because they are the same, and thus the arcana must accept it.
In a certain way, it would explain the protagonists’ sacrifices and improve even more their development: after a life of repressing (and likely yearning for many things), when they confront what essentially is what everyone yearns for at some level… they let it go. They let themselves be filled by everyone’s wishes and hopes, and finally understand their relation to all of it, their value and meaning. They understand what they have in front of them and what it wishes for, and they accept it as well, for that’s what they are too - it’s a complete mirror for them and all of humanity.
The protagonists understand everything and how it bonds with itself - they understand themselves.

A little bit about the noodle stand from 4-2 Gyakuten Saiban
Are there any palindromes in the names and titles in the Japanese version, what was the original meaning of the creators and what was lost during localization.

First, let's get acquainted with the owner of the noodle stand. His Japanese name is:
矢田吹麦面 (Yatabuki Mugitsura)

The two kanji of his given name (麦面) can be combined into the single kanji "men" (麺), meaning "noodle".
麦 (mugi; baku) - barley, wheat
面 (men; ben; omo; omote; tsura) - mask, face, features, surface
The reading is exactly like this because it is indicated in the dialog box. (ムギツラ - mugi + tsura)
The name of his stand, “やたぶき屋”, (Yatabuki-ya, lit. Yatabuki’s Shop) or written as "やたぶきや" on the front side of the Noodle Stand, is the reverse of "やきぶたや" (yakibuta-ya, lit. roast pork shop), as written on the backside.

The character's name was adapted as "Guy", although there is not even a hint of this in his name. Well, probably because one of the kanji readings was similar or what?
There are no questions about "Eldoon", it takes place because of the original name.

Next about the sign on the house of the noodle shop owner.
The sign has the inscription みそ (miso)

『みそラーメン』って書くつもりが、 スペースが足りなくなっちまった。
“miso rāmen” tte kaku tsumori ga, supēsu ga tarinaku natchimatta.
I was going to write "Miso Ramen" but I ran out of space.
It seems like nothing special, miso is a fermented condiment, made from soybeans. The word has several other meanings, for example: last day of the month, 30 (thirty), key (main) point, good part.
But they are all written differently.
There is another one, for which only kana is used (just like on the sign).
It is a slang word that means: go ahead and try, why don't you give it a go?
Very life-affirming.

About the Yatabuki’s dog

The dog's real name is レンゲ (renge) - lotus flower
Where did "Spoon" come from in the localization? It's from the same place. The only problem is this:
Renge can mean "Chinese spoon", which has the shape of a lotus petal, but only as an abbreviation (the full word is written like this - 散り蓮華 [chirirenge])
蓮華 is read as renge, just as 蓮 can be read as renge (other readings - hasu, hachisu).

However, レンゲ meaning "lotus flower", usually written using kana alone
By the way, when Minuki pets the dog, saying よし(yoshi) is a word used to make someone feel comfortable, a calming word (like there-there).

Japanese "Onomatopoeia" 『オノマトペ/Onomatope)』
There are two types in Japanese Onomatopoeia. One is 「擬音語(ぎおんご/Gi-on-go)」 which is “written sound” as we hear, and the other is 「擬態語(ぎたいご/Gi-tai-go)」 which is “written sound of status” as we look or feel.
1) 「擬音語(ぎおんご/Gi-on-go)」: “sound” onomatopoeias
As examples, let’s compare onomatopoeias for some animal sounds in Japanese and English.
犬(いぬ/Inu)「ワンワン(Wan-wan)」 Dog: “Woof woof” “Bow-wow”
猫���ねこ/Neko)「ニャー(Nyaa)」 Cat: “Meow”
牛(うし/Ushi)「モー(Moo)」 Cow: “Moo”
豚(ぶた/Buta)「ブーブー(Buu-buu)」 Pig: “Oink oink”
にわとり(Niwatori)「コケコッコー(Kokekokkoo)」Rooster: “Cock-a-doodle-doo”
2) 「擬態語(ぎたいご/Gi-tai-go)」 “status” onomatopoeias
This type is onomatopoeias of “status”. An easy-to-understand example is “わくわく(Waku-waku)” which became famous through “SPY x FAMILY.” “Waku-waku” means being excited or thrilled about something you look forward to. Although the status does not have that sound, we can imagine Anya’s facial expression and emotions just by seeing the word.
By using onomatopoeias, we can describe the situation or the person’s feelings in detail with simple and short words. For example, if you want to say “It’s raining,” here are some onomatopoeias, from the lightest to the heaviest;
①「雨(あめ/Ame)がポツリポツリ(Potsuri-potsuri)と降(ふ/Fu)っている」…Raindrops are falling at intervals.
②「雨がポツポツ(Potsu-potsu)降っている」…Just a few raindrops are falling.
③「雨がパラパラ(Para-para)降っている」…Raindrops are falling continuously
④「雨がしとしと(Shito-shito)降っている」…It’s quiet, but certainly raining continuously.
⑤「雨がザーザー(Zaa-zaa)降っている」…It’s raining hard and making a fair amount of noise.
⑥「雨がドシャドシャ(Dosha-dosha)降っている」…It’s raining dangerously hard.
Onomatopoeias have existed since before manga and anime existed, but manga has made us more familiar with them, and they have enabled us to share delicate expressions with visual images using just a few words. So I think you’ll be familiar with them naturally while watching anime or manga, without extra effort to memorize them.
Hereunder I’ll pick up some lines with onomatopoeias from Season 1 episodes;

Fansub release + translation notes for Utena ep 26!
お前は彼女の事どんな風に思ってるんだい?
This line from Akio is an interesting one to translate. Word for word, it means “How do you think of her?” But this misses a few bits of nuance. For example, 彼女の事 is “her”, but it comes with the nuance of “her whole self”, so the question is almost like “what do you think of her - body and soul?”
“How” is also an oversimplification of どんな風に, which feels more like “in what kind of way do you think of her”? For this line, I settled on this:
When you think of her, what do you feel?
I believe it encapsulates what Akio is asking, even though the individual words deviate quite heavily from the original script.
Akio then grabs Anthy violently and asks again, this time more directly and aggressive:
彼女の事どう思ってる?
Again, this could be translated directly as “How do you think of her?” The only thing that has changed is どんな風に into どう as well as omitting the subject and question particles — a shorter sentence with more direct meaning. I translated it as a more direct way of asking the same thing:
What is she to you?
Anthy: さあ、でもそれはイメージなんでしょ?
Anthy: Sure, but I thought it was just a fantasy.
The word イメージ (imēji) is one that trips up a lot of Japanese learners, and even some translators. Because it seems like a 1-to-1 loanword of “image”, it often gets translated directly as such. But in reality, the word only means “image” in the sense of a mental image, an impression, a depiction of something as opposed to the reality of something. This can be most commonly seen in the ubiquitous phrase seen on all food packaging — 写真はイメージです. A bad translation of this phrase would be “this photo is an image”, a hilariously redundant sentence. But its true English equivalent would be the phrase “serving suggestion”, indicating that the product contained inside is not exactly what is depicted on the packaging. 写真はイメージです is therefore more akin to “this photo is one depiction of how this product could look” or even “this photo is merely a depiction and may not reflect reality”, or sometimes even “pictures are for illustrative purposes only” if the photo on the packaging isn’t even a picture of the product (e.g. cows in a field on a milk carton, or a picture of pizza on a packet of pizza flavoured potato chips).
For example, this image was posted on a Japanese listicle titled 『でしょうな!当たり前すぎる「写真のイメージです」』 (translation: “Yeah, no shit! Extremely obvious product disclaimers”). The joke being that “yeah, no shit, I know this carton does not contain a literal field of cows”.
All of this to say, Anthy’s line might be translated by someone who doesn’t understand this as “Sure, but that’s just an image, isn’t it?”. But what she really means is “I thought that garden wasn’t a real garden, but instead an idealised image of a garden from Miki’s mind.”

Touga: If your soul hasn’t truly given up… You should be able to hear the sound that tears through the End of the World.
I forgot to discuss this in the notes for last episode, but it’s worth highlighting since it’s a phrase that will be repeated again and again. The key word here is 駆け巡る (kakemeguru) which means "to rush about" which I think is meant to evoke images of a car tearing through the streets. Kakemeguru is also a compound verb made up of the two words kakeru and meguru — kakeru means “to gallop on horseback” (or simply run/rush), and meguru means “to circle around, to tour around”. So the word carries nuances of almost joyriding around at high speeds. Also of note is the use of 世界の果て (end of the world) here to mean a location (the farthest ends of the earth) rather than an event (the revelation).

my thing about izaya is that he's so strange and weird and i love that so much. i didn't want to ramble too much in the notes of that poor person's post but i find the way he speaks and the words he chooses so interesting so let me ramble a little bit. this may or may not even be coherent so bear with me here im just going to speak my thoughts.
ok this got really fucking long and all over the 0place so im putting this under a read more sorry.
so i have volume 9 of the novel in both english and japanese. i only have two novels in japanese and that is this one and yuuyake wo. so i'm pretty crazy about this izaya speech analysis shit. anyways i was rereading thru the jp ver the other day just to compare it to the eng and i kinda realized that like.
a lot of people you can separate their speech in either formal and informal speech right? someone like shizuo speaks really informally and uses a lot of rough, dragged-out versions of words and stuff (しゃーねえ vs しょうがない) and then someone like shinra who speaks in a ton of yojijukugo and generally sounds like a nerd emoji gijinka.
izaya on the other hand rly... doesn't fit in either? i mean sure he sounds like another nerd emoji gijinka but it's kinda different. it's not so much the words he speaks but rather the intonation and his tone...
and he has his moments where he speaks pretty seriously and whatnot of course, but in general he just... doesn't sound very human when he speaks? i don't know if that's a conscious effort or not. is it his attempts at distancing himself from his own individual humanity? or is it just because he's a weird guy? i dunno. but it's interesting nonetheless.
one thing i will note though is that despite his somewhat inhuman speech patterns, it's also pretty...dramatic? to the extent where it's really exaggerated but also very cute and charming. (this part is important.)
i think a lot of what makes izaya's speech so weirdly inhuman is because he doesn't really use a lot of slang or similar lingo that people his age would typically use. i know mikado said in the novels that he doesn't really try to fit in with his age group's fashion sense either so it makes sense but still. he's like an old hag it's so funny. and it's because of that that when he says stuff like 'i don't get all hot and heavy over headless women' or whatever he said to celty it's really amusing to me because like... why is the strange man saying this?💀
another example i kinda giggled about on my twitter when i read it it's not even crazy and i sound corny and cheesy and stupid but theres this scene in vol 9 where izaya messages celty for business and hold on let me just put it as a quote.
he sounds so old saying 'video game' like 😭 idk it's just funny cause he barely even knows anything abt games like bro knows nothing im crying
in the jp hes like 「…ゲーム中なのかい?」 and then when celty tries to explain herself he says 「何を言ってるのか、良く解らないんだけど」 and im rly bad at tling parts of sentences and stuff but just know that the way he words it makes it sound like this gif to me
i love both versions i think the original jp makes him sound like hes so lost and confused (hence why pw gif cause lord that man always looks lost LMFAOOOO) and then eng tl just blunt ass "I don't know what you're talking about." makes him sound like full on hag 😭😭😭

first i think it's funny the translation has izaya say fuck here cause he very rarely swears and i did read this one thing about how he only swears when his mask slips so to me this is like genuine bewilderment that he cant even hide LOL. second why is he so excited to hear about 'whatever sexual fetish' shinra has im crying he's so damn nosy . okay but this is not the funniest part let me add that now.

oh also another scene i think is really cute and amusing and funny is back when shinra was first still trying to get izaya to form the bio club w him.
1. shinra is funny as fuck in this scene but also izaya's "Hmm. Can I punch you?" made me havbe a good laugh. in the jp he says 「んー。殴ってもいいのかな?」 which is pretty much the same thing just with the intonation of like 'hmmmmmmmmm should i hit u or not...' sorry like i said im just bad w explaining this stuff. but i felt the need to point it out not cause im one of those annoying ppl who praise the original jp ver and reject translations and localizations i just think it's important for izaya specifically cause i love him and i want to analyze his speech patterns as best as i can.

Type calmly, please.' its not even funny or nothing i just find it so amusinf whenever he talks like that💀 i will say though the english translation kind of makes him sound more weird and inhuman than the original. that line in the original was basically just him telling her she needs to calm down enough to at least type properly LOL. idk if im just being nitpicky cause this is izaya tho so feel free to ignore that. fwiw i like the eng tl bc while it's a different intonation than the original japanese ver i think if he did speak english it would probably sound smth like that anyways.
this too made me laugh like ??? seriously he is really nosy when it comes to people's intimate affairs. in the jp ver he calls them an 'intimate couple' which just is like .. ok bro💀

if i were commenting on the actual stuff going on in this scene rn this post would be a lot olonger and even more terribly all over the place so im just gonna focus on how i think it's funny izaya says 'easy, man...' this is like one of the only times his words are somewhat natural and sound like smth you would hear someone else say. in the jp ver it's 「おいおい…」 which is somewhat less out of left field in terms of coming from izaya but still it's pretty surprisingly normal. i have to wonder if in that moment he's too worried about shinra to care about keeping up appearances.
this is just random and me making fun of izaya as usual but why the hell does he weigh himself after his showers💀💀💀 it's cute and endearing and only adds to his strong gap moe but still... it's strange...
speaking of cute things this is from a volume i forget but he says this one phrase a couple of times and it is just both really cute and also kind of idk... saddening. one of the times i can remember he says it is when namie was making fun of him or something and he replies 'Don't tease me. I'm only human.' or something along those lines and it's like . hm. ok.
i think it's cute he says 'dont tease me' a few times cause eughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (trying to ward off severe brain damaged incoherent thoughts) but 'im only human' is like... are you really? even after you try so hard to escape your own humanity and individual self so much... im going to try and give my thoughts on it here but this is just based off my hc that izaya has bpd so yanno. im basing a lot oif this on my own experiences sorry. i do that a lot. (gestures over to all the posts i make abt fob/mychem fan izaya)
when it comes to just straight up acknowledging his humanity izaya has no problems with this because 'sure, i'm human. isn't that obvious?' is probably something along the lines of what he thinks. it's easy for him to just say that because it's just that. it's just words. it holds no real meaning and shows no true insight into how he actually perceives himself. but when it comes to actually having to come face to face with his own humanity and the fact that yes, he is only human, it's a lot more difficult because now it's out of his control. i wonder also if he has problems with perceiving his own self.
