『「父の娘」たちーー森茉莉とアナイス・ニン』　矢川澄子

１９９７年の本。論文系なのかと思って借りたが、エッセイ集だった。著者さんは森茉莉の生前に関わりがあった人で、森茉莉の有名な汚部屋とまではいかないかもしれないがとにかく乱雑な部屋にも入ったことがあったそうだ。この人の森茉莉に関する他の本を読んでみたいなと思ったり。

この本が編纂されたのは映画『ヘンリー＆ジューン』のおかげでアナイス・ニンの人気が高まったからだろう。アナイスが実父と関係を持ったと言うのは過去にも読んだことがあったと思う。この頃の日記も出版されてるだろうけど、読んでみたい気がしない。私は私に無理強いはしません。

森茉莉の『甘い蜜の部屋』を再読してみることにした。この本は３０前後の時に甘い蜜のあまりの濃厚さに窒息しそうになりながら読んだ記憶がある。若くなくなった今読んだら、大人の目線で登場人物たちをみられて、違う感想を持てるかもしれないと思っている。そうそう、森茉莉��この作品を六十代の途中から１０年かけて書き上げたそうだ。著作家としてのデビューは５４歳で。矢川は鴎外が、文学者として円熟し出した頃五十代半ばで亡くなり、茉莉がその円熟を引き継いだと言っている。面白い考え。森茉莉やっぱり好きだわ。

TRANSLATION ERROR: HOW DO HALF-FOOT NAMES WORK?

So, there are several translation issues in the official English release of Dungeon Meshi. One of them is the information about how half-foot names work.

Original text: 名前と後名・父親の名前の前名＋スあるいはズで構成する。チルチャックを例に挙げると、前名 (チル)＋後名 (チャック)・父親の名前 (ティム)＋ズ。チルチャックの娘のファミリーネームは“チルズ” か “チルス”となる。なお、前名だけ呼ぶのは親しい間柄だけである。 Official translation: Names are composed of a first name, a last name, and their father’s first name plus “s” or “z.” For example, Chilchuck’s first name is “Chil,” his last name is “Chuck,” and his father’s name is “Tim”+s. Chilchuck’s daughters’ family names are either “Chilz” or “Chils.” Only people who are very close to an individual call them by their first name on its own. Machine translation, confirmed by a human translator: It is composed of the first name, the second name, the first name of the father, and then either "u" or "z". For example, Chilchuck's first name is "Chill" + "second name" (Chuck) + "father's name" (Tim) + "s". The family name of Chilchuck's daughter is "Chilz" or "Chils". Only close friends call each other by their first name.

In Japanese, first/personal/given names are called mei (名, name) or shita no namae (下の名前, lower name). Family name/last name/surname can translate into three different Japanese words, myōji (苗字), uji (氏), and sei (姓).

The original Japanese text doesn’t use any of these standard words for first or last name at all, most likely to try and avoid exactly this confusion.

For Chilchuck, it uses 前名 (“before” + “name”) and 後名 (“back” + “name”), which are not normally used in Japanese to refer to a person’s personal name and family name, and when used together like this implies a two-part personal name (Chilchuck).

So Yen Press incorrectly states that “Chuck” is Chilchuck’s last name when the Japanese says 後名 (back name), and then correctly translates that his daughters’ family name (ファミリーネーム, family name written phonetically in katakana) is Chilz/Chils.

Kui most likely purposefully used the katakana phrase “family name” to make sure people understood that when she called Chuck his back name (後名), she did not mean last name/surname/family name.

So this caption should have been translated as something like:

“Half-foot names are composed of a personal name, which is made of a first part and a second part, followed by their family name, which is their father’s first name plus “s” or “z.”

Something that would have made this much easier to translate would be if Kui had called Tims and Chilz/Chils patronymics, which is the real world terminology for the type of name she's describing. As it is, the translators probably weren't familiar with patronyms and didn't recognize what Kui was talking about, and didn't proof-read their work sufficiently to catch that their translation was confusing and misleading.

A patronym is a name based on the personal name of one's father, grandfather, or an earlier male ancestor. Traditional patronymics like this change with every generation, which is what Kui describes the half-foots doing.

Over time a patronym sometimes gets “stuck” and becomes a hereditary patronymic surname instead of just a patronym. For example, the hereditary name Johnson originally meant that someone was the son of John, but the name became a fixed, hereditary surname, and now every generation of the family is called Johnson, no matter what their father’s personal name was.

If the half-foots had patronymic surnames/last names/family names, then Chilchuck's daughters would also be named Tims, but they're not, so we know that the last part of their names are actually just traditional patronymics.

So which part of Chilchuck Tims’ name is his last name/family name/surname?

Though it's really not a last name, Chilchuck's patronymic, Tims, functions the same way as a hereditary surname would function for someone else. Tims is the patronymic that he inherited from his father’s first name, which was Tim. It’s the name that connects him to his father and shows that they are related. For his daughters, their patronymic is Chilz/Chils, the name they inherited from Chilchuck, and that shows that they are related.

BONUS

Half-foot culture appears to be predominately Irish and Hebrew. This is interesting, because Irish is a Gaelic culture. Welsh is another Gaelic culture, and the way Welsh patronymic surnames developed is similar to Kui's half-foot naming system.

Historical Welsh names sometimes included references to several generations: e.g., Llywelyn ap Gruffydd ap Morgan (Llywelyn son of Gruffydd son of Morgan), and which gave rise to the quip, "as long as a Welshman's pedigree."

During the Anglicization process, ap Gruffydd was turned into Gruffydds; i.e., the "ap" meaning "son of" was replaced by the genitive suffix "-s", but there are also cases like "ab/ap Evan" being turned into "Bevan."

In some cases the "ap" coalesced into the name in some form, like ab Rhydderch becoming Broderick, ap Rhys becoming Price, and ap John becoming Upjohn.

Toyotama-hime – Wani (Dragon) Goddess disguised as a human

Wani was a dragon or sea monster in Japanese mythology. Wani is discribed as "crocodile", or sometimes "shark".

Toyotamahime (See) is a goddess in Japanese mythology. Daughter of the sea god Watatsumi, she was said to reside in a dragon palace. Their palace was as if made from fish scales and supposedly lies undersea. Her true form was “Yahiro no Owani (meaning giant crocodile, approx. 24 m long)”, and she was the wife of Hoori (See2), is known as the epitome of human–animal marriage tales. She was the mother of Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto (See3), father of Emperor Jinmu (the first Emperor: See4), and sister of Tamayori-hime (See5), the Emperor's mother.

Toyotamahime makes a fateful meeting with the demigod prince, Yamasachi, also known as Hoori ("Fire-Subside"). They married and lived happily in the dragon palace. 3 years later, she and her husband Hoori, who missed home, went ashore to give birth.

She then warned her husband, "All people from other parts of the world give birth in the form of their native country when giving birth. So I will give birth to a child in my true form”, and requested Hoori not watch how she gives birth. Hoori, however, was pazzled and peered in on his wife as she was giving birth, and saw her crawling around as a giant crocodile of about 24 metres (79 ft) long. He then startled in shock and retreated. Toyatama-hime learnt that being witnessed her true form by her husband, "I have always intended to pass through the path of the sea," she said, "but I am ashamed that you should have observed my true form.” She blocked the sea path, leaving the child behind and left.

トヨタマヒメ 〜人間に変身する和邇 (龍) の女神

和邇は、日本神話に登場する龍または海の怪物のことである。和邇は「ワニ」、ときには「サメ」と表現されることもある。 

トヨタマヒメ（参照）は、日本神話の女神である。海神ワタツミの娘で、竜宮城に住んでいると言われている。その宮殿は魚の鱗でできたようなもので、海中にあるとされる。その正体は「八尋の大和邇（やひろのおおわに: 体長約24mの巨大な鰐の意）」で、ホオリ（参照2）の妻であったことから、異類婚姻譚の典型として知られる。神武天皇（初代天皇: 参照4）の父である鵜葺草葺不合尊（うがやふきあえずのみこと: 参照3）の母であり、天皇の母である玉依姫（たまよりひめ: 参照5）の姉である。

トヨタマヒメは、半神の王子ヤマサチ、通称ホオリと運命的な出会いを果たす。二人は結婚し、竜宮城で幸せに暮らしたが、3年後、故郷が恋しくなった夫のホオリとともに出産のために陸に上がった。

知らない、知られない

お兄ちゃんは独立、お姉ちゃんは頑固、礼ちゃんは不憫と我らが4人兄妹末っ子の陽ちゃんはハイボールを飲みながらしみじみ言った。兄妹を一言で紹介するなら？という質問で、ちなみに私は兄は性悪、姉は頑固、陽ちゃんはピュアだと思っている。姉に聞いた時は兄は狡猾、私はうるさい、陽ちゃんはなんだろうと首を傾げてたよ、姉のことは気を使って真面目って言ったら私の事何にも分かってないと怒られた、と言うと礼ちゃんのことをうるさいって言う人の方が何にも分かってないと笑った。そして私と陽ちゃんが迷わず姉のことを頑固だと思ってることにも笑った。

不憫。言い得て妙、と言うか陽ちゃんがいかにも私に抱きそうな感想だ。陽ちゃんは私のことをピエロにならなきゃいけなかった人だとと思っているから。実際そうなのかもしれないし、そうじゃないのかもしれない。私はただ私の理想とする家族像をみんなに押し付けて、仲良し家族という箱に詰め込もうとしただけだろうと責められたらそうだねと言うだろうし。

お兄ちゃんはなんというだろうか。どの妹にボロクソ言われている、外面がよく容量がよく性格の悪いお兄ちゃんの目から私たちはどう映ってるのだろうか。

色々あって親が所有している車に乗っているので、事故をおこした、と母に電話したら礼を慰める会を今夜しよう、と実家の晩ごはんに勝手に呼ばれた。もうこの土日は車に乗らないと言っているのに、車でしか行けない実家を指定するのが、人の話を全く聞かない母らしくて面白かった。

実家の6人掛けのテーブルは当然のように父と母だけが座っていた。この席に兄や姉や陽ちゃんが呼ばれることはない。かつて6人でテーブルを囲んでいたのが嘘のように父と母と私でおさまりが良い。むしろこれ以上は定員オーバーな気もする。

陽ちゃんと会った、という話をしかけた時にテレビから吹奏楽の旅が流れて、ママがちょっと待ってあとにして、とテレビに釘付けになる。ママの悪い癖。パパは酔っ払って机に伏せていた。1年近く連絡を取れない娘の話がこれから始まるというのに。これだから陽ちゃんが寄りつかないんだよな、としみじみ思った。呼ばれもしない。呼ばれても行かない。陽ちゃんの欲しいものは悲しいほどここにはないから。

吹奏楽の旅を見終えた後、陽ちゃんは元気だったこと、やつれたと言われたこと、酔っ払ってバラエティショップに入って若い子しか使わないようなファンデを勧められて買ったこと、適当にシートマスクを選んで名古屋駅で全部ぶちまけたことを話した。ママは大爆笑していた。そりゃそうだろう、ママが好きそうな話を選んだのだから。不憫。言い得て妙。

Melusine – mythical humanoid serpent transformed into a dragon

Melusine is a water spirit from French folklore and an example of human–animal marriage as well as princess Toyotama (See) in the East. She is a humanoid hybrid whose upper body is that of a beautiful woman in medieval costume, but whose lower body is that of a snake, and is also said to be a dragon nymph, as she has dragon wings on her back. She is also sometimes thought to be associated with mermaid lore. The Starbucks logo is also inspired by her.

Mélusine was the daughter of Pressine, the Fountain Fay, and Elinas, King of Albany, Scotland. Her mother placed a curse on Mélusine and her sisters that for one day a week they would assume the form of a snake from the waist down. Furthermore, if anyone saw them in their true form, they would be permanently remain forever the lower body of a snake and with wings.

Raymondin, Count of Poitou, who had left his family after accidentally killing his uncle, while hunting in the forest, met Melusine one day, fell in love and married her after making a covenant that he would never look at her on Saturdays. She brought her husband wealth and they had ten children. 

However, when her husband heard a malicious rumour, he broke his promise and saw Melusine's true identity while she was bathing. Locked alone in her room, her upper body was human, but her lower body was that of a giant snake (or fish). She then assumes the form of a dragon, provides him with two magic rings, and flies off, never to be seen again. She returns only at night to nurse her two youngest children, who are still infants. Although many of Melusine's children had the nature of monsters, it is said that the future French monarch stood from the lineage of two children born normal.

メリュジーヌ 〜竜に変身した神話上の人型蛇の妖精

メリュジーヌは、フランスの民間伝承に登場する水の精霊で、東洋の豊玉姫（参照）と同様に異類婚姻の一例である。上半身は中世の衣装をまとった美しい女性の姿だが、下半身は蛇の姿をしており、背中に竜の翼が生えていることから竜の妖精とも言われている、人型のハイブリッド。また、人魚の伝承と結びつけて考えられることもある。スターバックスのロゴにもなっている。 

メリュジーヌは、泉の妖精プレッシナとスコットランドのオルバニー王エリナスの娘である。母親はメリュジーヌと妹達に、週に1日だけ腰から下が蛇の姿となるという呪いをかけた。さらに、もし変身した姿を誰かに見られた場合には、永久に下半身が蛇で翼を持った姿のままとなってしまう。 

ポワトゥー伯爵のレイモンダンは、誤って叔父を殺してしまったために家を出ていたが、ある日メルジーヌに出会って恋に落ち、メルジーヌは「土曜日には絶対に自分を見ない」という誓約を交わして彼と結婚した。メリュジーヌは夫に富をもたらし、10人の子供をもうけた。 

しかし、悪意のある噂を聞いた夫は誓いを破り、入浴中のメリュジーヌの正体を目撃してしまう。部屋にひとり閉じこめられた彼女の上半身は人間だったが、下半身は巨大な蛇（または魚）のものだった。 そして彼女は竜の姿になり、夫に2つの魔法の指輪を与えると飛び去り、二度と姿を現すことはなかった。彼女は、まだ幼い二人の末っ子に授乳するために夜だけ戻ってくる。メリュジーヌの子供達の多くは化け物の性質を持っていたものの、問題なく生まれた2人の子供の血統からは、後のフランス君主が立ったという。

首を突っ込む（くびをつっこむ/Kubi’o tsukkomu）: stick/put/push/poke one’s nose into, meddle in, get involved (more than necessary), interfere too much

あんなことを聞いて、首を突っ込むなという方が無理だ: (direct translation)　After hearing such a story, it’s impossible for me not to put my nose into that, even if you tell me not to.

口止め（くちどめ/Kuchi-dome）: forbidding someone from telling the secret, ordering someone to keep quiet

“ゆえ（故/yue）” in “しっかりいたしますゆえ”: because, since = ので(casual) *ゆえ is very formal.

手前（てまえ/Temae）: in the front ⇔ 奥(おく/Oku): beyond, the depths

I have seen many translations of 奥 as “back”, but it depends. In the straight direction in front of you, the closest is “手前” and the furthest is “奥”.

摩訶不思議な（まかふしぎな/Maka-fushigi-na）: mysterious beyond comprehension, ineffably mysterious

凹凸（おうとつ/O-totsu）: bumpy and uneven, rough and jagged = 凸凹(でこぼこ/Deko-boko)

I don’t know if they are Kanji or not, but we usually use them just like Kanji. 凹 is read as おう(Ou) or ぼこ(Boko) and it means “dent(ed)”. 凸 is read as とつ(Totsu) or でこ(deko) and it means “bump” or “protrusion”.

It’s completely different from the word “たしなむ（嗜む/Tashinamu）” which means “enjoy” or “have a taste for.”

The unspoken rule in the castle is, ‘Don’t interact with him unless necessary.’)

出る杭は打たれる（でるくいはうたれる/Deru kui’wa utareru）: Japanese saying which means “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”

I’m not sure if “please” should be added or not. This way of saying is usually used when a high-ranking person speaks to someone lower, but it has a bit polite nuance. I don’t know why this sentence was missing in the English subtitles in the video I watched.

Finally, Jinshi called Maomao by her name. Maomao’s words “No matter what, you will always be Master Jinshi to me” seemed to give him confidence, and his warning to the former head lady-in-waiting of the Diamond Pavilion was brilliant. By the way, Concubine Lishu has been in a really pitiful situation. Watching this anime, we can see that even people who are generally in a privileged position also have various sufferings.
