I'm trying to understand how to give a noun attributes, and I thought of a new headcanon to make sense of the attributive particle 的, de.

In English we're used to the modifying phrase coming after the noun that is being modified. But in Mandarin it's generally the other way around.

The general pattern is

[modifying phrase] 的 [noun to be modified]

So "A person that I like" is

[我 喜欢] 的 [人] [wǒ​ xǐ​huan]​ de​ [rén]​ [I like] PARTICLE [person]

which can feel backwards and strange compared to what English speakers are used to.

But if I read 的 as "kinda" like this, it kind of makes sense to me:

wǒ​ xǐ​huan​ de​ rén​ "a me-like" kinda person

We start out with all possible persons, and then I narrow it down to the kinds of persons that I like.

Same thing with eg.

从 云梦 来 的 学生 cóng Yúnmèng lái de xuésheng from Yúnmèng come PARTICLE student "a student who has come from Yúnmèng"

or, cóng Yúnmèng lái de xuésheng "a come-from-Yúnmèng kinda student"

You start with all possible students, and then narrow it down to those coming from Yúnmèng.

It makes a bit more sense than before to me at least!
