Mystery 03: On page 91, Nagano-san mentioned that Sycamore’s glasses are fake – I want to hear more about it!

Nagano-san told us about the fake glasses. They may look like simple glasses, but there may be more to it than that.

This is my own interpretation, but I think that Sycamore is showing his true self when he reverts back to his original name. Still, it isn’t easy for him, he can’t do that anymore, and even if you were to ask him his true feelings, I don’t think he intends to take back his old name, or take off his glasses.

Back when Sycamore was a child, after he had been separated from young Layton, he read every book that his parents owned, packed up his necessary belongings, and then, one bright afternoon as he watched the floating clouds, he left, thinking “I’m going to buy a pair of glasses”.

Mystery 04: If the Professor Layton series were to continue, what kinds of characters would you like to create?

I’d like to draw comical characters. Currently, I’m into the “Otoko wa Tusrai yo (It’s Tough Being a Man)” series, and I find myself laughing along with Tora-san, as he gets angry, always falling in love with the heroine, then getting his heart broken, and sometimes getting annoyed… But off screen, for everyone watching, he is very entertaining. It is good to have a character like that who can make people laugh.

In “Professor Layton”, when I draw a laughing expression, there are no characters that fit a big open-mouthed laughter. For Layton or Luke, they end up with “Haha” or something tidy like that.

Layton shows a bit of a comical side in this picture.

長野さんが語ってくれた伊達メカネのエピソ ー ド。単なるメカネのように見えて、実は彼のいろんな思いがこめられているのかもしれません

これはあくまでも僕の想像なのですが、サーイマンが完全に素顔になるときって「本来の名前」を取り戻すときだと思うんです。 でも、簡単にそうできないし、できなくなってるし、本心を問いただしても、名前を取り戻そうとも、メガネを外そうとも考えていないと思います。

サーイマンが子供のころ、子供のレイトンと別れたとき、家にあった両親の本を全部読んで、必要な荷物を誌めて、外に出たある晴れた午後、流れる震を見ながら「メガネ買おう】と思ったんです。そして家を出たんです。

ナゾ０４ 今後、『レイトン教授』シリ ー スが続くとしたら、 どんなキャラクターを描きたいですか？

三枚目キャラが描いてみたいです。今、「男はつらいよ」シリーズにはまっているので、寅さんみたいな大笑いしたり、怒ったり、いつもヒロインに恋して、失恋しちゃったり、時には周りにすごく迷惑かける・・・だけれど画面の外で見ている人を、その分本当に楽しませてくれる。ああいう笑ってもらえる三枚目キャラクターが良いなと思っています。「レイトン教授」では楽しそうな絵を描こうとするときに、大きく口開けて目いっぱい大笑いさせられるキャラがいないなあ。と思いました。レイトンやルークにそうさせようとしても、につこりと、「あははは」くらいでいつも上品になっちゃうんですよね。

MAQUETTE COFFEEのオーナーの鈴木さんが、僕の写真（Tumblrの）を以前から見て気に入って下さっていた様で、パッケージに使われた薔薇の写真（上の写真）を使う事を前提にパッケージのデザインも考えて下さったとのことです。

You are the light, I am the shadow

Yesterday I was trying to copy my Saezuru playlist on Spotify, because I thought it would look better than on YT, but the problem with that is that songs easily available in the jungle of the YT app don’t appear on the other one and in particular a song that is very important to me that I want in the playlist:

If you search for it on Spotify, you will find a bad remixed version and another cover version, but not the original 1979 song from the soundtrack of the anime The Rose of Versailles.

This isn’t new information, nor a discovery I made on my own, it was first pointed out to me during a discussion on discord by other people more attentive than me. This is chapter 1 of Saezuru and Yashiro is looking at Kageyama leaving on his bicycle. Picturing Kuga he sings: きみは ひかり ぼくは かげ - You are the light, I am the shadow. In the official English translation by June, they simply translated the text as follows:

So if you are reading it, without the drama cd playing, you are likely unaware that Yashiro is singing here. While the elongated lines following the words in the Japanese edition would visually clue you in: these words are meant to be sung or their sound should linger… Not only that, but Yashiro’s mouth is open wider than usual and there are lines near his chest to show he is taking more air in.

I want to include here the full lyrics of the song, so that others can check if there are mistakes in the English translation available, that you find in the description of the video above and on a couple of other places.

Although the song is performed by 鈴木宏子 Suzuki Hiroko, a female singer in a rather high register, it is clear from the lyrics and the dialogue inserted in the composition that the person talking is André addressing Oscar and calling out to her at the end. The use of masculine pronouns and other gendered words should easily indicate that the thoughts expressed are André’s and that he is the shadow to Oscar’s light.

What really struck me when I listened to it with a translation is the portrayal of love as pain and suffering, and that the more the person is hurting, the deeper they are loving. Which I believe is really consistent with how Yashiro thinks about love, so - knowing what this song was about - to hear it quoted in the very first chapter of Saezuru is not only a homage to one of the greatest Shōjo manga ever written but a suggestion of the themes or at least how Yashiro feels about love.

If love is pain, I'll suffer as much as I want, Until it reaches your heart one day (…) The more I suffer, the deeper my love (grows). This heart is hurt and love, love will deepen.

In the story of The Rose of Versailles, André at the beginning is just a secondary character in the background, but he has been with Oscar since the beginning and he will be the only man to embrace her. During the early stages of the revolution he is wounded and loses sight from one eye, and in the end he becomes completely blind. Let’s hope that Yashiro doesn’t follow André’s destiny further.

But putting that song in the mind of the reader was such a clever way to let us glimpse into the very complex interior life of this character otherwise known as “a serious masochist and deviant, a leacherous bottom and the public toilet for the executives”. Yashiro has every reason to think about love as suffering, to feel that maybe his only way is to love silently, from the shadows, and feel that pain.

Every so often one of these is a big surprise compared to the tone of most of the songs and this is one of them, it very much feels like it should be in an action movie, one where a proper fight scene is less of a surprise than a goofy one (^.^)

Granted, the title is likely a play on "Enter the Dragon", so that does make sense, either way, the combination of percussion & string instruments is really good

My new goal of trying to add 3 new words to my vocab list every day is going pretty well! I've missed a couple of days from being busy with life stuff but mostly keeping consistent! Btw, I try to keep my definitions in Japanese too, I believe it helps to get a fuller understanding of the meaning.

15) What are you most proud of in your language learning journey this year? Difficult to say really because there are lots of small things that make me feel proud in regards to Japanese. It's things like being able to deal with a situation in the classroom because I understand what the kids are saying, or finally understanding every word of the announcement on the train, or recognising a word because I actually learned the kanji. I guess I'm just proud that I've made some progress. It's not the progress I was hoping to make, but it's still progress!

忙しいときに限って、普段無視している場所の掃除をしたくなる。手の込んだ料理を作り、積読の本を開き、昼寝をして、遠くにも出かけたい。 なんて我儘、気まぐれなことかと思っていたら、そういう人はけっこうたくさんいると知った。心強いことである。

どこかへ行きたくてもすぐには行けないとき、写真や写真集を眺める。 ここに並べた写真たちに残るのは今はもう過ぎた景色だけれど、写真になった景色は変わらずずっと在るから、写真の中ならどこへでも行ける。 休暇、休眠、散策の先、写真と共に暮らしは続く。

1987年、埼玉県生まれ。2011年、東京造形大学造形学部美術学科絵画専攻卒。

日々のあれこれをフィルム写真におさめ、自身でプリントし発表し写真集を作り、またうろうろとする。

KYURI

東京を拠点に活動するタブラ奏者・サウンドデザイナー。

インドの打楽器タブラと電子楽器を用いた楽曲制作・パフォーマンスを行なっている。

2016年よりインド・デリーのタブラ奏者Arunangshu Chaudhury氏に師事。

インド国内の文化施設でのインド古典音楽公演のほか、NHK連続テレビ小説"スカーレット"等の劇中歌でも演奏を行なっている。

鈴木富美恵、井口桂子によるダンスデュオ。現代社会で生きる上での問題や疑問を取り上げて”人間らしく生きる”をテーマにした詩的な作品作りと、感覚的な実験劇場である即興の二つをベースに活動している。2007年、『DANSER』(フランス)『ballet tanz』(ドイツ)best stage 34のtopに掲載される。 共同通信パリ支局 よりニュース配信される。

2013より、Art Space 呼応co-oh 主催。様々なアートが交流する場所としてオーガナイズも行っている。様々なアーティストとのセッション、写真や映像作品にも出演している。最近ではモノクローム写真の巨匠、Michael Kenna の被写体として彼の大回 顧展の作品として恵比寿写真美術館に展示された。2022年には越後妻有大地の芸術祭、スイス、フランス、エストニアの欧州ツアーにも招聘。

Tokyo-based tabla player and sound designer. She creates and performs music using the Indian percussion instrument tabla  and electronic instruments. Studied under tabla player Arunangshu Chaudhury in Delhi, India since 2016. He has performed Indian classical music at cultural institutions in India and  sang in the NHK television series "Scarlett".

 Dance duo of Fumie Suzuki and Keiko Iguchi Best stage of "DANSER" (France) and "ballet tanz" (Germany) in 2007 Top among the 34 best stages of "DANSER"  (France) and "ballet tanz" (Germany) in 2007 " ballet ranking tanz" (Germany)  and "DANSER" (France) stage Organizer of Art Space Co-oh since 2013. They organizes the space as a place for various art exchanges. He has worked on sessions with various artists,  photo and video productions,  and has been invited to Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2022 and European tours  to Switzerland, France, Estonia, etc.
