방탄소년단이 부르는 ‘청춘’의 노래(인터뷰)

인생에서 가장 아름답고 행복한 시기인 ‘화양연화’를 열정 어린 땀으로 채워나가고 있는 방탄소년단. 2013년에 데뷔해 10대의 꿈, 행복, 사랑을 아우르는 ‘학교 3부작’을 노래하던 소년들이 어느새 청년으로 훌쩍 성장해 20대 청춘을 대변하고 있다. 앞으로 방탄소년단이 들려줄 청춘 이야기는 무엇일까. 화양연화 part 1을 마치고 part 2를 준비 중인 그들에게 물었다.

랩몬스터 Q 한 인터뷰에서 방탄소년단이 추구하는 음악은 청춘이라고 말했다. 현재 랩몬스터의 청춘은 어떤가. 흐림인가 맑음인가. ▲ 맑았다 흐렸다 한다. 사막이랑 바다 한가운데에 서있는 느낌? 어떤 날에는 사막에 있다가도 어느 순간 푸른 바다에 있는 것 같다. 때에 따라 자주 변한다.

Q 데뷔 초에는 학교를 노래했고, 올해는 청춘을 노래했다. 그렇다면 앞으로 방탄소년단 음악에는 어떤 변화가 있을까. ▲ 시간이 지나면서 우리가 하는 음악도 바뀌지 않을까. 확실한 건 우리와 비슷한 나이대의 친구들을 위한 음악을 만든다는 것이다. 2년 전엔 학교 이야기를 했고 올해는 청춘을 노래했다. 정해놓은 건 없지만 우리 노래를 듣는 이들의 이야기를 대신하고 싶다.

Q tvN <뇌섹시대-문제적남자>에서 뇌섹남으로 활약해 주목을 받았다. 랩몬스터가 생각하는 뇌섹남의 기준은 무엇인가. ▲ 그 사람이 어떤 식으로 사고하는지, 대화할 때 배울 게 있으면 그 자체로 섹시하게 느껴지는 것 같다. 좀 더 디테일하게 보면 주관이 있어야 되고 자신만의 신념이 있어야 하고. 그걸 또 사람들에게 전달할 수 있는 사람이 참 멋있는 것 같다.

Q 그 기준에 부합하는 연예인을 꼽는다면 누가 있을까. ▲ <뇌섹시대-문제적남자>에 함께 출연했던 분 중에 하석진 형. 어떤 부분이 섹시한지는 한마디로 설명할 수 없지만 형에게는 배우고 싶은 게 많다. 형은 사람을 불편하게 하지 않고 편하게 해준다. 그 능력이 좋다. 또 항상 분위기를 업시킨다. 주관이 강한 것도 아닌데 형의 말을 듣게 만든다. 묘한 매력이 있다. 부드러우면서 강하다.

Q 일부 래퍼들은 남을 디스하거나, 무자비한 욕으로 힙합을 표현하곤 한다. 그 문화에 익숙지 않은 사람들은 그것들이 가끔 거북할 때가 있다. 왜 그렇게까지 하는지 이해도 안 되고. ▲ 힙합 문화가 어떻게 보면 개방적이라고 볼 수 있는데, 어떻게 보면 자신들만이 이해할 수 있는 폐쇄적인 성향을 갖고 있기도 하다. 거기에서 나오는 거친 말들은 오래전부터 유지돼 온 힙합만의 특성이다. 일반 대중들이 그러한 그들의 문화를 존중해줘야 하는 부분도 있지만 그런 날 것의 단어들을 남용하는 것은 좋지 않다고 생각한다.

뷔 Q ‘뷔’는 예명이 독특하다. 무슨 의미가 있는 건가. ▲ 원래 후보가 셋 있었다. 씨스, 렉스, 브이 중 하나를 골라야 했는데 브이가 제일 괜찮은 것 같아 브이로 결정했다. 그런데 회사에선 한 글자가 더 낫지 않느냐고 해서 ‘뷔’가 됐다. 아직도 내 이름이 적응 안 된다. 하하.

Q 다른 아이돌과 비교했을 때 방탄소년단만이 가진 강점은 무엇인가. ▲ 똘끼가 넘친다. 대신 숙소 안에서만. 숙소에서 자유로운 모습들이 너무 재미있다. 특히 정국이. 그를 이길 사람은 없다. 넘사벽이다. 존재 자체도 웃긴데 준비된 개그로 우리에게 항상 웃음을 준다.

Q 방탄소년단 블로그에 올라오는 믹스 테이프들 날짜를 보면 멤버들 모두 활동 여부에 상관없이 꾸준히 음악 작업을 하는 것 같다. ▲ 원래 나를 포함한 보컬 4명은 음악 작업을 하는 멤버가 아녔다. 랩하는 형들을 보면서 흥미가 생겨 나도 곡을 만들게 됐다. 사실 음악을 만드는 데 있어 누구에게나 실력이라는 게 있지 않나. 그런데 회사에서는 그런 거 상관없이 누구나 만들어보라고 하시더라. 그래서 자유롭게 가사도 써보고 멜로디도 만들었는데 피디님께서 내 곡이 괜찮다고 해주셔서 지난 ‘화양연화 pt.1’ 앨범에 넣어주셨다. 그 후 좀 더 전문적으로 하기 위해 장비들도 샀다. 앞으로도 더 열심히 해볼 생각이다.

Q 멤버 7명이 생활하고, 활동하고, 또 매일 음악까지 만드는데 트러블은 없나? ▲ 정말 24시간 1분도 안 빼놓고 하루 종일 같이 지낸다. 서로 잘 아니까 이젠 싸우지 않는다. 그런데 계속 그 사람들 얼굴만 보니까 그냥 낯선 사람들의 얼굴을 보고 싶다. 하하. 세상 자체가 우물 안인데 맨날 보는 사람들 얼굴만 보니 더 깊은 우물에 있는 느낌이다.(웃음)

Q 멤버마다 개성이 뚜렷한데, 숙소에서도 각자의 역할이 있을 것 같다. ▲ 일단 진 형은 엄마 같다. 요리도 잘하고, 깔끔하고, 정리정돈도 잘한다. 멤버들도 잘 챙겨주고. 슈가 형은 아빠처럼 숙소에 고장 난 물건을 잘 고친다. 전등, 화장실 변기 같은 거? 랩몬스터 형은 진짜 형 같다. 맨날 뭘 그렇게 망가뜨리는지, 참 재미있는 형이다. 제이홉 형은 수다를 잘 떨어서 누나 같다. 정국이랑 지민이는 장난꾸러기 막내 같고.

슈가 Q 2010년 언더로 활동할 당시 직접 만든 곡 ‘gloss’를 한 포털 사이트에서 본 적이 있다. 나중에 알고 보니 그게 슈가의 곡이더라. 5·18 민주화 운동 사진을 모아 자작곡 영상을 만든 게 인상 깊었다. 어떻게 만든 곡인지 궁금하다. ▲ 고등학생 때인가? 광주에서 가요제가 있었다. 5·18가요제인가? 정확히 기억은 안 나는데 그 가요제에 맞춰 곡을 만들었다가 포털 사이트에 공개했다. 좋은 취지로 만든 곡이었다. 시기도 딱 5월 그때였고. 본선까지는 못 갔지만 잊히지 않았으면 좋겠다고 생각했다. 그런데 나중에 방탄소년단으로 데뷔하고 팬 분들이 찾으셨다. 나도 그게 공개될 줄은 몰랐지. 지금 들어보면 너무 아마추어 같아서 부끄럽다.(웃음)

Q 데뷔 초부터 자아 성찰이나 사회 문제에 관한 가사들을 유독 많이 썼다. 특별한 이유라도 있나. ▲ 곡 작업을 하면서 늘 메시지를 담고 싶었다. 단발성으로 끝나는 것보다는 알맹이가 있어야 한다고 생각했다. 사람들도 내 가사를 들으며 이런저런 생각을 하면 좋을 것 같고. 가수 활동을 하면서 사회 경험을 하기 힘드니까 시간 날 때마다 뉴스나 시사 프로그램을 열심히 챙겨 보는 편이다. 가사 쓸 때도 우리 노래를 가장 많이 듣는 나이대의 친구들 눈높이에 맞춰 사회 문제를 쉽게 풀고자 한다. 또 20대 친구들에게는 그들이 겪는 3포, 5포 세대 이야기를 해주고 싶어 일부러 일반인 친구들에게 전화해서 많이 물어보고 조사한다.

Q 방탄소년단에서 ‘무기력’을 맡고 있다던데. 왜 하필 무기력인가. ▲ 무대 위에서나 곡 작업할 때 가장 생기가 돈다. 제일 잘할 수 있는 게 이 일밖에 없으니까. 일할 때 모든 에너지를 쏟는다. 팬들 만나고, 방송하고, 음악 할 때가 가장 신나고 자신있다.

Q 연애라는 감정에도 무기력한가? ▲ 막 연애해야겠다는 생각이 들진 않는다. 지금은 일하는 게 더 좋다. 솔직히 서울에 아는 사람도 별로 없다. 사람들 만나는 것도 별로 안 좋아하고. 내가 개인적으로 이루고 싶은 게 많기 때문에 그걸 다 할 때까지는 연애하지 않을 생각이다. 그래서 연애 관련 가사도 연애하는 친구들 고민 상담해주면서 영감을 얻는 편이다. 아직까지는 그걸로 충분하다.

Q 방탄소년단 가사를 들어보면 그 나이대에 맞는 청춘, 이야기가 고스란히 느껴져 공감된다. 본인이 쓴 가사 중 가장 기억에 남는 가사가 있다면. ▲ ‘Tomorrow’라는 곡에 ‘해가 뜨기 전 새벽이 가장 어두우니까’라는 가사가 있다. 개인적으로 이런 유의 가사를 좋아한다. 부정적인 것보다 꿈과 희망을 줄 수 있는 가사. 지금 힘들게 살아가는 사람들에게 힘과 용기를 주고 싶다. 앞으로 해가 뜨�� 잘될 거니까 잘 견뎌내라고.

제이홉 Q 11개월가량 해외 곳곳을 다니며 콘서트, 팬 미팅을 마쳤다. 기억에 남는 에피소드가 있다면. ▲ 언어 때문에 문제 된 에피소드가 많다. 하하. 영어가 안 되니까 호텔에서 룸서비스를 시킬 때 나도 모르게 한국어가 튀어나오더라. 그때마다 진땀 조금 뺐다. 그런데 직원분들이 어떻게 잘 알아듣고 가져다주셔서 놀랐다. 한번은 스트로베리 아이스크림을 달라고 해야 하는데 나도 모르게 딸기 아이스크림을 말해버렸다. 그런데 정말 딸기 아이스크림이 왔다. 늘 주문하고도 우리가 뭘 시켰는지 모른다. 그래서 벨소리가 울리면 긴장된다. 푸하하하하. 저번엔 소시지를 시켰는데 스테이크가 왔더라.(웃음)

Q 지난 앨범 ‘화양연화 pt. 1’은 멤버 모두 작사, 작곡에 참여했다. 이러다 프로듀싱까지 하는 거 아닌가? ▲ 아직 프로듀싱까지는 멀었다. 저랑 랩몬스터, 슈가, 피디님과 작업을 많이 하는 편인데 최근에 피디님께서 프로듀싱 생각이 있느냐고 물어보시더라. 그런데 저는 아직 제 음악을 잘 만들지도, 관리도 못하기 때문에 자신 없다고 말씀드렸다. 좀 더 배운 다음에 기회가 생기면 내 스타일대로 한번 해보고 싶긴 하다.

Q 곡에 대한 영감은 언제 어떻게 받는 편인가. ▲ 내가 겪은 일들로 만들려고 한다. 그런데 환경이 환경인지라 세상 겪을 일이 별로 없다. 그래서 영화를 보거나 책을 보려 하는데 책은 또 잘 안 읽힌다. 아버지가 문학 선생님이셔서 책이 잘 안 읽힌다고 토로하니 다른 일 하지 말고 집중해서 읽어보라고 조언해주시더라.

Q 제이홉이 생각했을 때 방탄소년단의 위치는 어디쯤 온 것 같나. ▲ 아직 한참 멀었다. 대중의 사랑을 받으려면 더 좋은 히트곡도 있어야 된다고 생각한다. 팬들의 사랑은 너무 감사하지만 아직 대중적으로는 멀었다고 본다.

Q 해외에서도 인기가 어마어마하다. ▲ 내가 보니까 해외 팬 분들이 K-POP의 퍼포먼스를 참 좋아하는 것 같다. 특히 칼군무! 노래를 들으면서 볼거리도 많으니까 그런 부분들을 좋아하는 것 같다.

Q 별명이 희망이라고 들었다. ‘희망’이라, 영화 <인사이드 아웃>의 캐릭터인 기쁨, 슬픔과 같은 개념인가? ▲ 옛날부터 희망이라는 별명을 스스로 어필했었다. 실제 성격도 밝고. 내 이름도 홉, 영어로 HOPE이기 때문에 그 이미지를 굳히고 싶었다. 데뷔 전에 스트리트 댄서를 했었는데 그때 닉네임도 스마일 호야였다. 하하하.

정국 Q 멤버 중 가장 막내로 현재 고등학교 2학년이다. 학교생활은 잘하고 있나. ▲ 학교에 친구들이 별로 없다. 낯을 많이 가리고 말주변도 없다 보니 먼저 다가가지 못한다. 누가 먼저 말 걸어주면 막 재미있게 할 수 있을 것 같은데.(웃음) 또래 친구들에게 어떻게 행동해야 될지 모르겠다. 또 친구들이 나를 어떻게 생각할지도 모르겠고.

Q 활동하면서 키가 컸다고 들었는데 얼마나 큰 건가. ▲ 키가 큰 건 아니고 덩치가 조금 커지고 얼굴이 조금 늙어졌다. 하하하. 턱도 조금 커지는 것 같고. 그래서 팬분들이 아기 때 모습이 그립다고 한다. 내가 너무 빨리 바뀌었나 보다. 하….

Q 지난 9월 1일이 생일이었는데 형들이 잘 챙겨줬나. ▲ 이번 생일이 서울 와서 4번째 생일인데, 매번 기분이 새롭고 좋다. 또 갈수록 아는 게 많아지는 것 같아 신기하다. 형들은 오리고기를 사줬다. 내가 고기 중에 오리고기를 제일 좋아하니까.(웃음)

Q 몇 달 후엔 성인이 된다. 2016년 1월 1일에 가장 하고 싶은 일은 무엇인가. ▲ 운전면허를 따고 싶다. 내가 치장에는 관심이 없는데 요즘 자동차에 흥미가 생겼다. 운동하다가 길거리에서 멋있는 자동차들을 보면 나도 운전해보고 싶더라. 특히 덩치 큰 차. 사고 나도 안전할 것 같은 그런 차를 운전하고 싶다.

Q 춤을 배우기 위해 멤버 중 유일하게 미국을 갔었다고. ▲ 열다섯 살 때인가? 연습생 때 안무가 선생님과 미국을 다녀왔다. 한 달 정도 배웠는데 정말 많은 것들이 바뀌었다. 뭔가 느낌이 산다고 해야 되나. 하여튼 눈에 확 띄게 바뀌어서 다들 만족하셨다.

진 Q 슈퍼마리오 캐릭터 덕후라 들었다. 언제부터 좋아하게 된 건가. ▲ 어렸을 때부터 슈퍼마리오 게임을 재미있게 해서 취미로 소소하게 피규어를 모았다. 나중엔 팬분들이 선물해주셔서 늘어났다.

Q 방탄소년단 공식 블로그에 가니 ‘JIN’이라는 게시판에 직접 요리 관련 글을 올리던데. ▲ 하하. 사실상 방탄소년단 블로그는 내 거다. 요즘은 시간이 없어 잘 못하고 있는데 팬 분들과 좀 더 가까워지기 위해 만든 게시판이다. 워낙 먹는 걸 좋아해 간편하게 만들어서 먹방을 찍어 보여드린다. 요즘 먹방 프로그램이 많은데 꼭 나가보고 싶다. 진심이다. 잘할 수 있다.

Q 아까 보니까 폴더폰을 쓰던데 그것도 핑크색으로. 특별한 이유가 있나. ▲ 단순히 예뻐서 쓰는 거다. 그런데 요즘 불편함을 느끼고 있다. 화면이 작아서 얼굴을 가까이 대고 보니 시력도 나빠지는 것 같다.

Q 방탄소년단의 맏형으로 요즘 가장 큰 고민이 있다면. ▲ 예전엔 ‘형, 형’ 하면서 잘 따르더니 요즘엔 멤버들이 나를 어떻게 괴롭힐까 고민하는 게 눈에 보인다. 하하. 특히 정국이. 예전엔 날 잘 따르던 눈빛이었는데 지금은 나를 어떻게 괴롭힐까 궁리하는 눈빛이 너무 드러나 보인다.

Q 실제로 처음 본 여자랑 눈을 잘 못 마주친다고 들었다. 사실인가. ▲ 내가 남중·남고를 나와서 여자랑 대화할 기회가 별로 없었다. 데뷔하고도 매일 보는 여자분들만 보기 때문에 처음 보는 여성분들을 보면 눈을 잘 못 쳐다보고 피한다. 그래서 팬 분들께도 많이 죄송하다. 지난번엔 ‘오빠 무대 위에서 눈 마주쳤는데 왜 피하셨어요? 제가 싫어서인가요?’라는 편지를 받아 조금 놀랐다. 절대, 절대! 그런 거 아니다!

Q 올해는 ‘I need u’, ‘쩔어’로 활동하며 큰 사랑을 받았고, 해외 활동 역시 열심히 했다. 방탄소년단에게 2015년은 뜻깊은 해로 기억될 듯 싶은데. ▲ 그렇다. 정말 화양연화 뜻 그대로 올해 인생에서 가장 아름답고 행복한 순간을 보낸 것 같다. 앞으로 또 어떤 활동을 하게 될지 모르겠지만 더 열심히 하는 모습 보여드리겠다.

Q 멤버들과 휴가를 간다면 어디로 가고 싶나. ▲ 워터파크. 물을 무서워해서 한 번도 안 가봤는데 멤버들과 바다나 워터파크에 한번 가보고 싶다.

지민 Q 멤버 중, 유독 아이라인 화장이 짙다. ▲ 눈에 살이 조금 많은데, 무대에선 조금 강렬해 보여야 되니까 다른 멤버들보다 짙게 하는 편이다.

Q 지민은 방탄소년단에 가장 늦게 합류했다. 어떻게 들어간 건가. ▲ 중학교 때부터 춤을 췄다. 작은 무대에서 배틀하고, 공연하는 것도 이렇게 즐거운데 큰 무대에서는 얼마나 더 행복하고 기쁠까 궁금하더라. 때마침 부산에서 공개 오디션이 있어 지원하게 됐고, 연습생 기간을 거쳐 방탄소년단 멤버가 됐다.

Q 처음 방탄소년단에 합류했을 때와 현재를 비교했을 때 가장 용 된 멤버는 누구인가. ▲ 다들 멋있어지긴 했는데… 내가 가장 용 된 것 같다. 서울에 제일 늦게 올라오기도 했고. 당시 촌티가 가장 많이 났다. 주변 사람들도 제일 사람같이 됐다 그러고. 하하하.

Q 벌써 방탄소년단이 데뷔 3년 차다. 그동안 고생한 멤버들에게 한마디 한다면. ▲ 뷔_고생했다, 이놈들아! 하하하하하. ▲ 슈가_나는 우리가 다 고생했다고 생각하지 않는다. 우리 앞으로 10년, 15년 더 고생하자. ▲ 제이홉_내가 멤버 중에서 나이가 가장 중간인데, 형들은 내 의견을 잘 수렴해줘서 고맙고 동생들은 잘 따라줘서 고맙다. 멤버들에게 배울 것도 너무 많고, 앞으로 계속 잘해보자. ▲ 랩몬스터_다들 알고 있잖아. 좀 더 고생하자. ▲ 지민_정신없이 앞만 보고 달려온 것 같다. 이제 조금 여유를 찾고 서로 더 많이 웃었으면 좋겠다. ▲ 정국_막내인 나를 잘 잡아줘서 모두 고마워! ▲ 진_난 너희들이 자랑스럽고 기특하다.

Q 방탄소년단의 최종 꿈은? ▲ 슈가_랩을 정말 잘해, 멜로디가 죽여, 이런 것보다는 우리 앨범의 트랙을 돌렸을 때 멈추지 않고 전체를 플레이할 수 있는 방탄소년단이 되고 싶다. ▲ 랩몬스터_우리 가사에 감명받았다, 인생에 영향을 끼쳤다고 말해주는 팬 분들이 가끔 있는데 그런 걸 보면서 우리의 노래를 통해 많은 사람들이 꿈을 이루는 데 노래가 도움이 됐으면 좋겠다. 최대한 많은 분들을 끌어주고 싶다. ▲ 지민_큰 무대에서 공연하는 게 꿈이다. 돔에도 가고 싶고 아레나도 가고 싶다.

The song of 'youth' sung by BTS (Interview)

RAP MONSTER

Q: In an interview, you said that the music BTS is pursuing is youth. Currently, how is Rap Monster’s youth? Is it fading or is it bright/ clear?

A: Both. It’s like in between of the desert and the sea. One day, it feels like the desert and then one moment, it would feel like the sea. It often changes at times.

Q: During the early days of debut, BTS sang about school and this year, it’s about youth. So, what kind of change will BTS have on the music?

A: I think the music we’re making changes while time passes. I’m sure that we will make music for the people at our age. 2 years ago, we talked about school in our music and this year, it’s about youth. We don’t have anything set, but we want to stand in for the people (and their stories) who listens to our music.

Q: You’re getting a lot of attention through tvN’s Problematic Men, you're known as the ‘sexy brain man’. What do you think makes a ‘sexy brain man’?

A: How he thinks and when we are having a conversation, if there’s something I can learn from him, I think that’s sexy. When you look into the details, he needs to be subjective, he needs to have his own beliefs. I think it’s cool if a person can also deliver things to the other people.

Q: If you had to pick, which celebrity would fit in that criteria?

A: Problematic Men’s Ha Seok Jin hyung. I can’t explain which part of him is sexy in a word, but I want to learn a lot from hyung. He doesn’t cause inconvenience for people and he put other’s mind at ease. That ability is good. And he always upgrades the atmosphere.He’s not that subjective, but his words make me listen to him. He is beguiling. He’s soft but strong at the same time.

Q: There is a part of rappers who disses other people or they express hip hop through cursing. People that are not used to the hip hop culture sometimes may feel uncomfortable. And they also don’t understand why is it done in that way.

A: The hip hop culture, it depends on how you look at it, it can be open. But it also has a closed tendency which only those within it could understand. The violent language in the songs has been maintained from a long time ago, it’s a characteristic of hip hop. I think the general public needs to respects that part of the culture but I don’t think it’s good to excessively use such harsh words.

SUGA

Q: I saw the song you made in 2010 (when you were still an underground rapper under the name Gloss) on a portal site. Then I found out later that it was Suga’s song. The video with pictures of the 5.18 democratization movement and the song left a deep impression on me. I’m curious of how you made the song.

A: I think it was during high school? In Gwangju, there was a song festival, it might have been the 5.18 music festival? I can’t remember it clearly but I made the song for the festival and posted on the portal site. The song was made with a good purpose. It was around May as well. I didn’t even get into the finals but I think it would be good if (the event) won’t be forgotten. But afterwards, we’ve debuted and the fans found my old work, I didn’t know it would be publicized. Now that I look at it, I was such a beginner, it’s embarrassing. (Laughs)

Q: Since the early days of debut, you’ve written a lot of lyrics that is related to the society or self-reflection. Is there a special reason for that?

A: Whenever I’m making songs, I always want to include some sort of message in there. Instead of a one-off thing, I think it must be substantial. I think it’s nice when people have various of thoughts while listening to my lyrics. It’s not easy for me gain social experience since I’m working as a singer. So whenever I have time, I would diligently watch the news and the current affairs programs. When I write lyrics, I get down to their level, those who are in my peer group and easily solve the social problems. And people who are in 20s, the people who are in 3포, 5포 세대 I want to talk about their stories too. I deliberately call up my friends, who are ordinary people and ask them a lot of questions and look into it.

Q: I heard that you are in charge of ‘무기력’ (being lethargy/ lazy) in BTS, why’s that?

A: I have a lot of thoughts when comes to writing songs and when I’m onstage, because it’s the only thing I’m good at doing. When I work, I use up all of my energy. We meet the fans and go on broadcasts and when I’m making music, it’s the most exciting and I have the confidence.

Q: Even when you’re in love, will you also be lazy?

A: I don’t think I have to be in love. Right now, I prefer working. In fact, I hardly know anyone in Seoul. And I don’t really like meeting people. Personally, I have a lot of things that I want to achieve, so until then I won’t be in a relationship. These lyrics about love, I got inspirations from my friends when we talked about our worries. Until now, I think that’s enough.

Q: When I listen to BTS’ lyrics, the youth that fits with the certain age, I sympathize with the stories are remained intact. Among the lyrics you’ve written, is there anything that is very memorable.

A: There is a part in ‘Tomorrow’: because the dawn right before the sun rises is the darkest. I personally like these kind of lyrics. I prefer lyrics that can give (people) dreams and hope compared to the negative lyrics. I want to give power and courage to those who are having a hard time. Because when the sun rises, everything will be ok, so hang in there.

Q: Your stage name ‘V’ is quite unique. What does it mean?

A: There were 3 names to choose from, I had to choose from Six, Lex and V. V seemed to be the best one so it became my stage name. But the company said wouldn’t one letter be better, so it turned into 뷔. I still can’t get used to my name. Haha.

Q: When BTS is compared with other idols, what’s BTS’ strength that the others doesn’t have?

A: Overflowing craziness. But it’s only in the dormitory. In the dormitory, our free form/ image is very funny. Especially Jungkookie. No one can win him. He’s out of the league (literally mean: uncrossable wall of 4D). Jungkook being himself is funny and he always makes us laugh with the gag that he has prepared.

Q: On BTS’ blog, looking at the mixtape dates, whether if there is schedule or not, everyone seems to make music consistently.

A: Originally, the 4 vocalists including myself didn’t write any. But after seeing the hyungs making raps, I became interested and I started to write songs. Actually, when it comes to making music, you need to be capable of it, right. But our company didn’t care, anyone could try to write songs. So I wrote the lyrics freely and made a melody, showed it to PD-nim, he said it was ok so it got included in 화양연화 pt.1 album. Then afterwards, I even bought equipment because I want to do it more professionally. In the future, I I will work harder on it.

Q: 7 members living together, promoting together and making music together everyday, is there any trouble?

A: We literally spend 24 hours together everyday. We know each other very well so we don’t fight. But always seeing their faces makes me want to look at strangers’ faces. Haha. The World itself is a well but seeing the same faces everyday, it feels that I’m in a deeper well. (Laughs)

Q: Every member has a distinct personality. It seems that everyone has their own roles in the dormitory.

A: First of all, Jin hyung is like the mother. He’s good at cooking, he’s neat and he’s good at organizing and tidying. He also looks after the members well. Suga hyung is like the father, he can fix broken things in the dormitory. Such as, the lights, toilet seat/ bowls? Rap Monster hyung is like a real big brother. Breaking things everyday, he is such a funny hyung. J-Hope hyung talks a lot so he’s like the noona/ older sister. Jungkookie and Jiminie are like the mischievous maknaes.

Q: You guys went abroad for 11 months, holding concerts and fanmeetings. Is there a memorable episode?

A: There are a lot of episodes that was involved with language problems. Haha. I can’t speak English so when I’m calling for the room service, I end up speaking in Korean without realizing. Every time, I would sweat a bit. But I was surprised how the staff understood what I said and brought me the things. Once, I was supposed to ask for strawberry ice-cream but I ended up saying it in Korean without realizing. But, strawberry ice-cream really came to my room. Whenever we make an order, we don’t even know what we ordered. So when the door bell rings, I get nervous. Puahahahaha. Last time, I ordered sausage but I got steak. (Laughs)

Q: In the last album 화양연화 pt. 1, every member particapted in writing the songs and lyrics. At this rate, will you guys end up producing it yourselves?

A: We are still far from producing. Me, Rap Monster, Suga and PD-nim usually does a lot of work and recently PD-nim asked me if I was interested in producing. But I said that I’m not confident because I don’t know if I can make my music well and I can’t even manage it. I want to learn a bit more and if there is a chance next time, I will try to make songs with my own style.

Q: When do you get inspirations?

A: I write songs through my experiences. But with the environment I’m in, nothing really happens. So I watch movies or try to read books but I don’t read books well. My father is a literature teacher so when we were discussing that I can’t read books, he advised me not to do other work and just concentrate on reading.

Q: Where do you think BTS’ rank/ position is?

A: We are still far away from that. I think we need a better hit song in order to receive love from the public. I’m really thankful for the fans’ love but it seems that we are still far from getting love from the general public.

Q: BTS’ is also very popular overseas.

A: I think the foreign fans really likes K-Pop’s performances. Especially the ‘knife-like’ dances! When they listen to the song, there are other attractions too, so I think that’s why they like it.

Q: I heard that your nickname is ‘Hope’. Is it like the concept of the film Inside Out’s Joy and Sadness?

A: I’ve always had an appeal for the nickname Hope. I do actually have a bright personality. My name is Hope too. In English, it’s Hope, so I want to set that image. Before debut, I was a street dancer and my nickname was smile hoya. Haha.

Q: You’re the maknae and now you’re in the second grade of high school. Is your school life going well?

A: I don’t really have any friends at school. I’m shy with strangers and I’m awkward when I talk so I can’t approach people first. I think I can be funny if someone comes and talks to me first. (Laughs) I don’t know how I should act around my peer group. And I don’t know what these friends thinks of me.

Q: I heard that while you guys were promoting, you have grown taller, how much have you grown?

A:It’s not that I have grown taller, it’s my body that got bulky and my face got a bit older. Hahaha. I think my chin got a little bit bigger too. So the fans said that they miss the days when I had a baby face. It looks like I’m changing too quickly. Ha…

Q: It was your birthday on 1st September, did the hyungs treat you well?

A: This is my 4th birthday in Seoul, every time it feels like a new experience and it feels good. It’s fascinating that as time passes, I’m getting to know more things. The hyungs bought me grilled duck. Because I like duck meat the most out of all the meat. (Laughs)

Q: You’re going to be an adult few months later. 2016 January, what do you want to do the most?

A: I want to get a driving license. Recently I’m interested in cars. When I see the cool cars while exercising, I also want to try to drive. Especially the big cars. I want to buy one and drive a safe car.

Q: You were the only one in BTS to go to America to learn dancing.

A: I think it was when I was 15? When I was a trainee, I went with the choreography teacher. I learnt for a month and a lot of things have changed. Shall I say that the feeling was alive? Anyway, it was visible in my eyes so everyone was satisfied.

Q: I heard that you love Super Mario. When did you start to like it?

A: I’ve always enjoyed playing Super Mario when I was kid so I gradually collected the figures as a hobby. Then later the fans gave me presents so my collection has increased.

Q: I saw that you’ve uploaded posts on the bulletin boared named ‘JIN’ about your cookings on BTS’ blog.

A: Haha. BTS’ blog is actually mine. I don’t have time these days so I couldn’t post often. I made the bulletin board to get closer to the fans. I really like eating and made it simply so I filmed and showed my mokbangs. Nowadays, there many mokbang shows, I really want to go on it. I’m serious. I can do well.

Q: I saw that you were using a pink flip phone, is there a special reason for that?

A: I’m using it because it’s pretty. But these days, I feel that it’s inconvenient. The screen is small so I have to put it closer to my face to look and I think my eyesight got worse.

Q: As the oldest hyung in BTS, the biggest worry is?

A: In the past, they would follow me while calling me ‘hyung, hyung’, now I can see that the members are always thinking about how to annoy me. Haha. Especially Jungkookie. In the past, he had the look that listens well to me. Now the look of him thinking about how to annoy me is so obvious.

Q: I heard that you can’t make eye contacts with girls when you first meet them, is that true?

A: I never really had any chance to talk with girls because I went to an all-boy school for middle school and high school. After debut, because we see girls every day, I avoided making eye contacts with them. So I’m also very sorry towards our fans. Last time, I was a bit surprised when a fan asked in a letter: “oppa, I made eye contact with you on the stage, why did you avoid it? Is it because you dislike me?” No, never! It’s definitely not!

Q: You guys received a lot of love while promoting I Need U and Dope, and you guys worked hard abroad too. I think 2015 is a meaningful year for BTS.

A: That’s right. It feels that this year has been the most beautiful, happy moment in our lives just like the meaning of 화양연화. I don’t know what we will promote in the future but we will show you a more hard working BTS.

Q: If you could have a break with the members, where do you want to go?

A: Water park. I’m scared of the water so I haven’t been there before but I want to go the sea or the water park with the members.

Q: Among the members, only you wear thick eyeliner.

A: I have a lot of fat around my eyes, I need to look intense/ strong on the stage so I have to wear thicker eyeliner compared to the other members.

Q: Jimin is the last one to join BTS. How did it happen?

A: I started dancing since middle school. I had dance battles on small stages, and also performed. It was fun but I was curious of how happy I would be if I stood on a bigger stage. There was an open audition in Busan at the time so I applied for it and I went through a period of the trainee life, then I became a member of BTS.

Q: Compared to the first time you joined BTS, who had the biggest change?

A: Everyone became cooler. I think I changed the most. I came to Seoul really late. And at the time, I looked really unsophisticated/ old-fashioned. Haha.

Q: BTS has debuted nearly 3 years. Say something to the members that has suffered (through these years).

V: You guys suffered a lot. You rascals! Hahahahaha.

SUGA: I don’t think the tough time has arrived yet. Let’s suffer for 10, 15 years in the future.

J-HOPE: I’m the one that is in the middle of you guys (in terms of age) I’m thankful that the hyungs takes my opinions into consideration and I’m thankful that the dongsaengs listens to me. And I have a lot to learn from the members. Let’s keep doing well!

JIMIN: I feel that we are only running forward without a rest. I hope that we can find time to relax and smile a bit more.

Q: What’s BTS’ final dream?

SUGA: Instead of being really good at rapping and has awesome melodies, I want us to become the BTS that when our album tracks are being played, the whole album can be played without pausing.

RAP MONSTER: Sometimes there are fans that are impressed and say that it had influenced their lives. So, I hope that the songs will help more people to achieve their dreams. I want to make the most out of it (help people).

JIMIN: My dream is to perform on a big stage. I want to go on Dome and also on Arena.
