A Gay Girl's Guide to Korean Musicals (with English subtitles!)

People often associate musicals with male gayness (both onstage and off) but there's stuff out there for female-oriented queers too! It's just harder to find, which is why I put this video together despite not knowing Korean.

This list isn't comprehensive and I deliberately chose musicals with either queer female characters or gender-free casting (i.e. female actors playing male roles), except for Bernarda Alba, which is special as it’s by far the largest-scale all-female production with 10 characters. Obviously there are many Korean musicals out there which don't meet these criteria and are still of interest to the queers, but I wanted to highlight these in particular as they are, apart from Rebecca, not as well-known. I highly recommend checking out @koreanmusicals for more information on Korean musicals generally!

Note: Again, I don’t understand Korean and relied heavily on machine translation and the original lyrics for licenced productions, so any errors in the subtitles or explanations are mine. Corrections are very welcome!

QSMP HALLOWEEN TRANSLATIONS MASTER POST

This post is to help us do a halloween event without everyone necessarily having to speak english! Here are some translations for the phrases Trick or Treat or Happy Halloween, if they exist within the cultural context in other languages, so you can wish someone a happy holiday back in the same language!

French (from @/omglescubes)

Trick or Treat = Des bonbons ou un sort! (litt: sweets or a spell) Happy Halloween = Joyeux Halloween or Bonne fête d'Halloween

Brazilian Portuguese (from @/leolingo and @littleseasalt)

“trick or treat” = "doces ou travessuras" or "gostosuras ou travessuras" “happy Halloween” = feliz dia das bruxas OR just feliz halloween

Hebrew (from @/qdramatrio and @/azure-wing)

Happy Halloween! Option 1 - ליל כל הקדושים שמח! Pronounced "lel kol ha'kdosheem same'ach" (The ch sounds kinda like the French r). This is the translated version Option 2 - האלווין שמח! Pronounced "Halloween same'ach". This is the transliterated version many people use Trick or Treat! This one is a bit tricky(pun not intended) because the tradition simply does not exist here, which means any translation would just that- a translation Option 1 (most used[relatively]) - תעלול או ממתק/ממתק או תעלול! Pronounced "ta'alool o mamtak/mamtak o ta'alul" Option 2 - תעלול או גמול pronounced "ta'alool o gmool" Option 3 - ממתק או ברדק pronounced "mamtak o bardak" (The last two are mainly attempts of translators to make the Hebrew words for "trick" and "treat" rhyme)

No phrase available in Korean I'm afraid, at least nothing that's widespread enough to count. I mean, I suppose you could say: 즐거운 할로윈 보내세요! (Have a nice Halloween!) (We do NOT say this, but if you really want to wish someone happy Halloween, this should be your best bet I think.) trick or treat has been most commonky translated to "cukierek albo psikus" (candy or trick literal translation) and we dont translate Halloween so its a bit awkward so its usually "Wesołego Halloween" (happy halloween)

In Japanese you usually see トリックオアトリート！ (trick or treat) ハッピーハロウィン！ (happy Halloween!) both of which are just direct transliterations of English… A direct translation of “trick or treat” in Japanese would be お菓子をくれないといたずらするぞ (lit. "if you don't give me a treat, I'll play a trick on you") but that’s a little less natural.

Yiddish doesn't have a translation really of Halloween; you can transliterate it as: האַלאָווין (haloveen) And for trick or treat there are, predictably, far more words for trick than treat in Yiddish, but I'm partial to: כּישעף (kishef), המצאה (hamtsoe), שטוקע (shtuke) And treat: לאַקעטקע (la'ketke) or צוקערקע (tsukerke) So you could say "Happy Halloween" as "פריילעכע האַלאָווין" (freylekhe haloveen) [though below I'll talk about why you don't have to] and phrase "Trick or Treat" as really any combination of the above, though "שטוקע אָדער צוקערקע" (shtuke oder tsukerke) rhymes somewhat and "המצאה אָדער לאַקעטקע" (hamtsoe oder la'ketke" sounds nice to my ears. It would also be perfectly reasonable to use Hebrew for parts of this, particularly the "Happy Halloween" bit, as Yiddish incorporates a lot of Hebrew (for instance, "hamstoe" is Hebrew but has its own meaning in Yiddish). 우주 해적 시즌Season of Plunder 때, 에라미스와 칼싸움하고 아이도 구해낸 뒤에 거미가 파는 술 한 병 얻어서 아이도한테 따라주면서 자기 어머니 이야기하는 미스락스가 보고 싶다.

미스락스가 에라미스를 죽이지 않은 건 단순히 살생은 나빠! 같은 원칙 때문에 자비를 베풀거나 딸을 구해준 빚을 갚으려한게 아니라 자신의 그리고 자기 종족의 "과거"를 부정하지 않고 받아들인 행위라고 생각했음... 에라미스는 나이가 많고, 쉽게 폭력을 일삼던 미스락스의 과거랑도 닮아서 엘릭스니의 과거 세대를 상징할 수 있으니까.

그래서 미스락스가 에라미스에게 네 딸에게 네가 어떤 사람인지 보여주라는 도발을 들었을 때 에라미스를 부정하지 않고(=죽이지 않고) 칼을 거두었다고 봄. 아이도는 과거를 부정하지 않고 과거를 통해 성장해야한다고 말로 표현했지만 미스락스는 행동으로 보여줬다고 생각해

그래서 에라미스에게서 칼을 거둔 이 싸움 이후에 엘릭스니 구역 모금 이벤트에서 거미와 협력할 수 있었다고 생각함. 그 전까지 거미와 마주하기 싫어한 이유는 자신의 과거를 돌아보기 싫어하는 태도의 연장선상이라고 봤어서... 이제 자기 과거를 연상시키는 거미도 덜 껄끄럽게 대할 수 있었겠지

그래서 본인이 마주하기 싫었던 과거 인정하면서 동시에 성인으로서의 아이도도 인정하는 의식처럼 거미한테 얻은 술 아이도한테 따라주며 이야기 나누는 미스락스 보고 싶음.

사진 속 여인에 대한 단서도 찾을 겸, 잡무 처리 겸, 가볍게 돌아 보는 동네 한 바퀴. 우선은 올드 시티부터다.

​어디 보자, 수첩에 아직 미해결로 남아 있는 임무가... 아, 그래. 칼의 기둥이 있었지.

리들리 사건 때 조사차 방문했던 영국군 막사 밖에서 군인들이 이 기둥에 대해 나누는 대화를 엿들을 수 있었다. 이들은 기둥의 존재가 영 못마땅한 듯, 위에서 명령만 떨어지면 당장이라도 부수러 나갈 기세. 다만, 오스만계 원주민 중에도 이 기둥을 꺼림칙하게 보는 자들이 없지는 않은 모양이다. 그러게. 증오와 고통뿐인 기억을 굳이 저렇게 남겨서 되새길 이유란 대체 뭘까. 제 아무리 성공적인 복수를 기린다 한들, 그 복수의 원인을 제공한 비극이 없던 일이 되지도 않을 테고. 흠...

​아무튼 이걸로 칼의 기둥과는 완전히 작별이다. 다음은 동전을 찾아 형님의 옛 단골 카페로 가 볼까? 참, 그런데 그 카페 위치를 아직 모르는구나. 단서는 라미르 가문. 형님 말로는 그 가문의 일꾼들도 좋아하던 곳이라는데. 문제는 라미르 가문 사람을 어디 가서 찾는담?

다행히 핫산 가문 근처 가게에서 라미르 출신 상인 발견. 같은 오스만 사람인 척 변장하고 가서 물어 보니, 매우 친절하게 카페 주소를 공유해 준다. 그나저나, 이 아저씨는 자기네 가문 놔 두고 왜 남의 집 앞에서 장사를... 형님 말처럼 시대의 흐름을 따라가지 못해 도태된 건가?

​상인의 말에 따르면, 카페는 굴 아프샤르 카라반세라이 - 즉, 보겔의 화랑과 이맘 자히르 모스크 사이 바자 가에 있었다고 한다. 있었다라는 얘기는 지금 거기 가서 카페를 찾지 말라는 뜻이군. 꼬꼬마 셰리가 20대 청년이 될 만큼 시간이 흘렀으니, 없어졌다 해도 이상할 일은 아니다. 잠깐, 그럼 형님이 실마리로 언급한 나무 문이나 아치형 입구도 지금은 옛날 말일 수 있다는 건데.

​뭐, 가 보면 알겠지.

보겔의 화랑을 지나, 큰길을 쭉 따라서 모스크까지 왔다. 카페가 있던 곳은 화랑에서 모스크 사이 어딘가. 이제 다시 화랑 쪽으로 방향을 틀어 집중 모드로 걷다 보면...

여기다.

​옛 카페 터까지 온 건 좋은데, 이 근처에서 높은 탑이 보이는 길이란 어디를 말하는 것일까. 커다란 나무 문은 눈을 씻고 봐도 안 보이... 혹시, 이 길인가?

길 앞으로 멀찍이 탑 같은 것이 눈에 들어온다. 셜록 오른쪽의 나무 문이 형님이 말한 그 문인지는 잘 모르겠지만, 느낌상 출발점은 제대로 짚은 듯. 다음으로 이 길 왼편에서 아치형 입구를 찾아,

아치를 통과해 뜰 안에서 발코니 근처 나무를 뒤져 보면...

​동전이 눈에 잘 안 띄는 곳에 있어서, 예상 외로 살짝 애를 먹었다. 하긴, 덕분에 도둑맞는 일 없이 셜록 손에 무사히 돌아올 수 있었겠지. 참고로, 이번 동전은 마이크로프트의 베니스 여행 기념품이라 한다. 설마, 그 남자 동전 수집 중인 어린 동생을 위해 여행지에서 일부러 가지고 온 건 아니겠지? 셜록에게 물어 보면 분명 아닐 거라고 하겠지만, 마이크로프트도 어쩌면 그의 생각보다는 상냥한 형이었을지 모르겠다.

​자, 동전도 찾았겠다, 이제 또 올드 시티 어디로 가 볼까.

수첩을 보니, 올드 시티 북쪽 해변에 어린 시절의 추억이 있는 모양이다. 오래된 난파선이라.

흠... 부서진 배 같은 건 아무래도 안 보이는데. 내려가서 살펴볼까.

세월의 풍파에 이미 자취를 감추지는 않았을까 했더니, 그때의 흔적이 얼마간 남아 있었다. 이 난파선은 셜록이 코르도나에 이사 온 지 얼마 안 돼 발견한 것으로, 그 뒤 어린 셜록에게 마음의 안식처 같은 역할을 해 주었던 듯하다.

​두 소년은 배에 이름까지 지어 주고, 집에서 가지고 나온 몇 가지 물건으로 배를 꾸몄다. 그 가운데는 아버지의 수집품도 있었다고 한다.

그런데, 셜록의 아버지는 홈즈 가족이 코르도나로 오기 전 사망한 게 아니었나? 홈즈네가 지금의 저택으로 이사 오는 시점에서 그의 아버지는 이미 세상을 떠난 뒤였는데. 아니면, 그 전까지 코르도나에 있는 다른 동네에서 살다가 아버지의 죽음 뒤 그랜드 사라이의 그 집으로 옮긴 것일까. 내가 이야기를 잘못 따라왔는지, 아니면 설정 충돌인지 좀 헷갈린다. 저택에서 아버지의 부고가 실린 신문을 봤을 때 존이 무슨 말을 했는지 생각해 보면, 아마 후자일 듯.

그러나, 모처럼 찾아 낸 안식처도 불청객의 등장으로 오래가지 못하고, 셜록과 존은 힘센 동네 아이들의 텃세에 밀려 곧 난파선에서 쫓겨나야 했다. 하지만, 셜록의 기억과 달리 존은 도망이 아니라 무기를 가지러 갔다고 한다. 다리 위의 대포? 그 다리에 대포 같은 게 있었던가?

대포 찾으러 가는 길에 시청에서 보물찾기 행사용으로 숨긴 물건 발견. 찾으려고 애쓸 때는 죽어라 안 보이더니, 이런 데서 얻어 걸리네.-.-

참고로, 이 보물과 이어지는 단서의 이름은 '모래사장'. 보물의 위치상, 이 난파선 퀘스트를 하면서 자연스레 발견하도록 처음부터 의도된 것 같다. 그러고 보니, 초회차 플레이 때도 이런 식으로 맥이 풀릴 만큼 쉽게 찾은 보물이 꽤 있었다. 반면, 끝까지 못 찾아서 결국 공략글의 도움을 빌려야 했던 적도 없지 않았고.

​그나저나, 이거 그때도 잠깐 궁금했는데, 이 보물 찾기 개발진더러 직접 해 보라고 하면 어떨까? 아무리 그래도 본인들이 만든 게임인데, 이쯤이야 식은 죽 먹기겠......지? 아, 물론 내가 찾느라 애먹다가 심통 나서 하는 말은 절대 아니고요.  (흠흠)

다시 난파선 얘기로 돌아와서,

어린 시절 존과 셜록이 찾았던 대포는 다리 위 그 자리를 여전히 지키고 있었다. 당시 두 소년은 자기들의 안식처를 빼앗아 간 동네 녀석들에게 이 대포로 복수해 줄 생각이었던 모양이다. 그러나, 결국 둘은 대포를 쏘지 못했고, 그 아이들과 제대로 싸워 보지도 못한 채 힘없이 물러나고 말았다. 셜록은 그때 일을 더 이상 떠올리고 싶지 않은 듯, 혼자 해적 놀이에 빠져 있는 존에게 그만 잊어 버리자 말한다.

하지만, 존의 기억에 따르면, 난파선 사건은 여기서 끝이 아닌 듯하다. 셜록이 봐야 할 게 한 가지 더 있어? 그게 뭔데?

이때 셜록은 존의 말에 못 이기는 척 넘어가 줄 수도 있고, 그래서 뭐 하냐는 식으로 삐딱하게 대꾸할 수도 있다. 오랜 벗의 기분을 헤아린다면 당연히 전자를 택해야겠지만, 그 전에 셜록이 어떤 반응을 보였는지 생각하면 후자 쪽이 좀 더 자연스러운 흐름 같기도 하다.

어느 쪽을 택하든, 존은 셜록에게 해변 위 작은 술집 이야기를 꺼내면서, 당시 그 벽에 뭔가 표식을 남겼다는 말을 전한다. 해변 위 술집? 하지만, 이 근처에서 술집을 찾으러 다녔다가는 낭패를 보게 된다. 이 대목에서 셜록이 찾아야 할 것은 술집이 아니라 해변에 있는 동굴 입구. 수첩에는 제대로 '동굴'이라 적��� 있는데, 왜 존의 대사만 엉뚱하게 나왔는지 모르겠네.

​아무튼, 문제의 동굴은 이 다리 아랫길로 내려가 해변을 쭉 따라가다 보면 찾을 수 있다. 덤으로, 가는 길에 보물 하나 더 회수 가능. 이 보물과 이어지는 단서는 '긴 다리'라는 이름으로 수첩에 적혀 있다.

동굴 입구에 이르자, 셜록도 그제야 이 장소가 기억난 듯 뭘 찾을 수 있는지 보자고 한다. 동굴 안에는 바지로 만든 돛과 배 이름이 적힌 나무 판자, 낡은 조타륜, 부서진 배 한 척이 있었다. 이 가운데, 돛을 만드는 데 쓰인 바지는 그 동네 녀석들의 옷을 몰래 훔친 것, 그리고 낡은 조타륜은 그 난파선에 있던 아버지의 수집품으로, 역시 그 녀석들한테서 되찾아 온 것이었다. 그래, 아무리 힘없는 어린애라지만, 그 정도로 순순히 물러날 셜록이 아니지.      

​셜록은 동굴 안에 있던 물건들로 부서진 배를 다시 고치기 시작한다. ‘죄와 벌’에서 처음 나를 애먹였던 그 퍼즐. 이 게임에서 또 만날 줄은 몰랐지만, 왠지 반가운 기분이네. 그때보다 발전된 형태로 다시 보게 되어 더 좋기도 하고.  

배를 완성한 다음, 셜록은 추억을 되찾아 기쁘다고 순순히 인정하며, 마지막으로 존과 함께 기념 사진을 남긴다.
