Curious about how you came up with Dotty's character design because I love it a lot djfhvbdfh

Also very curious about what happens between her and Gale post-canon. I know that there's angst in their future and I'm 👀👀

I made a little inspo graphic for Dottys design actually! I think you could find if if you search her tag on my blog but basically i wanted to do a Proper Lady design, mixing elements from 1900 and 1960 design. I also wanted to include parts of heritage in the design (dotty is very heavily based off of india during imperialism- the pressure to conform to western standards of style- it was more obvious in her original ttrpg) hence the nose ring and the saree sash

Also royal blue is such a pretty color and wanted her to have a darker color palette so i went with greys and purples

But YES Dotty is just tragic and one of the things she and Gale would need to deal with post game would be her bone hurt curse

I think that kind of like Astarion and his vampirism the tadpole suppresses the worse symptoms but after its gone it starts to hit her full force. Necrotic deterioration of her bones from the inside causes her hands to shake and she starts to develop chronic pain that makes it hard for her to walk. It takes awhile for her to say anything to Gale bc she doesnt know whats wrong and doesnt want to worry him

The curse will eventually kill her so they need to get the party back together and go on a quest to break it, ultimately culminating in Dotty having to kill her uncle (who cursed her and her father before her) to break the curse. Despite that her life span is pretty significantly shortened and leaves her with chronic pain the rest of life

Had an idea for a fantasy game mechanic this morning that I thought I'd share! If this is cool to you, go ahead and use it as a hack, or codify it in the rules of your game. Message me if this happens, I'd be really into seeing how this works at a table or in a bigger set of rules!

Mechanical Epithets and Sobriquets

Epithets as in like "John Heroman, the lonesome tree, hero of five forks, skull crusher" are a really fun thing from fantasy (and real life) that tell us about the deeds of characters without having to get the whole story. They paint broad strokes about a person and give us a vibe, but leave the actual details of their deeds up to the imagination.

Kinda like the best TTRPG character backstories. 👀

So a couple of assumptions to make this microhack work:

The Characters are Already Known Heroes

We aren't writing the story of their lives before the game starts

We want to discover what (at least some of) our character's abilities are during play

After you've got the basics of your character sorted out, take a minute to come up with (or pick from a pregenerated list) a handful of sobriquets that feel right for your character. I'd say somewhere in the area of 2-4 feels right, with more established adventurers having more epithets.

They should all be vague and evocative, and paint right up to the edges of what you have already established about the world. Name drop battles and gods that haven't been established, give your character stories that are part of their legend but that don't yet make sense to you.

And then, during play, have characters use them. Player characters, NPC's, gods, bosses, random goblins. Make your epithets into threats "You dare defy the The Evening Rook!?" or appeals to your authority "Do it not for a stranger, but in the name of the Leyfinder". Establish how people feel about those epithets, which ones they love you for, and which they fear or hate you for. Know what your character feels about each of these epithets, and start to know in your heart how they got them.

Then, when it's mechanically and or narratively appropriate, declare to the table that you're using your epithet to gain a new ability. Tell the story of how you earned the title to the rest of the table (you should already know how people feel about the title, which ought to make this easier), and write a new ability based on how you earned the title.

Don't worry too much about being good at ability writing, just tell the table what you want to be able to do, and people will help you come up with something that feels right. And if you find that your ability or someone else's isn't working down the line, is taking some of the fun out of the game, or anything like that, just have a conversation about it. You're (probably) an adult, and if the people you are playing with are friends, or at bare minimum decent people, they will understand and try to help fix the problem.

Hey hello its me racoon anon back with another Idea

Thinking about your vampire aus and specifically thinking about how in the TTRPG vampire the masquerade there's a mechanic called "blood bonding" where basically if you drink another vampire's blood (by choice or otherwise) you become basically brainwashed to do what they want. And also usually addicted to drinking their blood (which prolongs the effect) anyways seemed like something u could have fun with in some way idk 🦝

(We are all going to collectively ignore that I've left this ask in my inbox for like, three weeks okay)

This is such a tasty concept!!! I immediately had to look it up and also saw that there are different levels to the 'brainwashing' depending on how much blood they're fed. Ranging from a very vague "this person is still themselves but will feel slight, inexplicable affection towards the vampire(s) in question" to "this person is basically in a permanent state of thrall where the vampire has suggestion power over them and the person is swayed to act towards their wishes/is dependant on them, but with a lot of their original personality remaining" to "full-on complete brainwashing where the person can't even take care of themselves and will only do what's commanded". This works on both humans and other vampires, so 👀👀👀 And combined with the blood-drinking becoming addictive, sounds like lots of potentials for Dark SBI!

I immediately came up with two scenarios. The first one is a more basic one: some AU where all of them are vampires. SBI (+whichever side characters you enjoy) form a coven. Techno is a covenless vampire. SBI meets him somehow and invites him to join their coven but Techno refuses - probably due to a combination of him being an introverted loner and maybe a dash of trauma from previous experiences with other vampires. SBI doesn't take no for an answer and instead resorts to blood bonding to get Techno to join. I don't know what's tastier: Techno being very young/a fledgling in vampire years so they treat him like the baby of the family because of that OR he's not actually all that young but since he never had a coven to rely on and the blood bond makes him dependant, he still gets treated like a fledgling anyway despite being older.

Second scenario: Human!Techno is a famous vampire hunter!!! SBI initially tracks him down and forces the blood bond on him to use him as a weapon (heehoo angst) or as a flex on other vampires. However, stuff happens and they get attached (again, Techno probably has Major Trauma tm) and end up caring for him more as a family member. Maybe some angst where SBI are scared that if they undo the blood bond, Techno will run away from them so they feel forced to keep it in place - even if just in a very low power capacity - because they're unwilling to let him go. This could also lead to another vampire yoinking Techno from them after they get attached and some delicious Techno whump because it says on the wiki that being deprived of the blood after being bonded would cause pretty terrible withdrawal symptoms and maybe even death.

11. How do they cope with confusion (seek clarification, pretend they understand, etc)?

She's a seek clarification type of lady. Cas will not have herself looking stupid because she made an assumption she shouldn't have. With anything genuinely important she'll make sure both parties in the conversation agree on what is being asked and what she plans to do before she does it. The exception to this is Marazhai because he will maybe let her get one question in and still won't give a straight answer 80% of the time, so in that case if she still doesn't know by Dodge Answer #2 she just goes with it until she can read whatever cue he's giving. It never ends up being that much of a problem but also he's generally not in charge of stuff like "trade routes" and "making sure the colonies don't implode" so his exception is allowable.

28. Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth? 

She prefers the unpleasant truth. A lie has a high chance of making fools out of everyone involved but an unpleasant truth can at least be worked around and come to something better. Duly note that she is a bit of a hypocrite on this, because she herself is okay with lying if she thinks there's no consequences to it, like telling Heinrix she didn't know anything about the sword shards. And when the need comes for her to approach a difficult topic she will internally grind her teeth and drag her feet to avoid the conversation until something forces her hand.

42. How badly do they want to reach their end goal? 

Her end goal here being: "make the Protectorate less chaotic and get the dynasty under the control," greatly. Cas has never had a great opinion of off-worlders in general and Imperium nobility in particular and so frankly everything that happened after her arrival on Theodora's flagship was a reinforcement of all her biases. Between Theodora's neglect and Calcazar's scheming, Cas hasn't had a peaceful night since she left Iocanthos because there's just so much she needs to do, fix one problem and five more spring up. But if she can actually get things back into some kind of working order her way that will make all the difference (and stick it to a political entity that she very much dislikes, so a mighty bonus).

B. What inspired you to create them?

Oh that's a long and convoluted answer. In short I'd say she's an amalgamation of a lot of character concepts that I've played with off an on since I got the original Rogue Trader TTRPG book a decade or so ago. The CRPG is quite different from any of the FFG 40k games but Casimira being A) high Fellowship, B) Xenos-friendly, and C) probably from Iocanthos (a favorite from Dark Heresy) were going to be givens for me. I'm always looking to play high charisma PCs in general and I also really like having characters that are from the outskirts of Imperium society in some way. Also just for the general concept I'd just finished Catherynne M. Valente's Palimpsest, and I'll say the Casimira in that book is very much her vibe (alone and in parts of her romance w Marazhai) in ways I didn't know when I first grabbed the name off of her.

Mechanically, since Psyker (my usual preference) wasn't fully implemented in EA, the original Cas in EA/first half-playthrough was a Death World/Commissar/Operative (conceptually similar to how I see her older sister actually). That Casimira was more genuinely "good person" Iconoclastic, which didn't quite fit what I was going for but also I didn't really know how the Iconoclast/Heretic split was going to go at the time. This Cas was practical, had some Dogmatic moments, and generally was approaching her role as Rogue Trader by trying to be a decent person/"benevolent noble" more often than not.

Then Yremeryss kicked my ass back to Act 1 and Cas was remade as a Hiver/Noble/Officer, both for the Fellowship bonuses and because at that point I'd decided Marazhai was the one for her and frankly "You. Serve Me." being the Noble's key ability was, uh, fitting for their dynamic. That Cas was going to be from Scintilla, and I made her a bit more spoiled, callous, and scheme-y, very into crime and other light heresies because she's very sure of her power as Rogue Trader and the right to do what she wants.

The current Xenoheretical, actively Anti-Imperium, Chaos dabbler Casimira emerged partway through that playthrough. She became Iocanthan again, an envoy this time, and Hiver still fit with the nomadic background. She got some of her old altruism back but it was more out of pragmatism than genuine feeling and could be overridden if she felt wronged or that her immediate want had a greater benefit. Also her being nominally a Noble but unable to meet the proper expectations of how she should act (according to Imperium standards) became a bigger part of her arc, one that ended up resulting in the Great Heinrix Divorce Arc and her darker turn with Marazhai in the second half of the game. And with all that, the Casimira I have today!

(Honorable mention vibe-wise, Bizet's Carmen, and specifically this performance of "Ramparts of Seville" conceptually influenced quite a bit of how I see her and Heinrix in that they definitely fit the "uptight man married to his job meets a mezzo soprano and they are not compatible and won't end up together but boy will they wreck his fucking life with the time they've got" genre 🤫)

I love being a ranger, I like nature and its good for horror settings too. In theory, I also love being a bard except I'm absolutely terrible at it, I don't know what to cast or do so I just sit there and make Dolly Parton d&d parodies.

It's cliche, but I do like being elven because again, naturey, but also just because I want to be humanoid but not human. And pointy ears are cool. Tielfings are cool race as well.

I haven't played many campaigns, mostly I've done it online which doesn't work that well for me. I do play solo ttrpgs, it's just easier and also fun!

My dream is to play a horror campaign, I've never done it. Maybe Call of Cthulu or something. Even the Stranger Things one.

I also used to play a lot of MTG but again, it's been a while. I have no one to play stuff with 😔 I miss it.

Caoimhe Yael - Thank you so much for asking about this one ^^ So, they don't really exist in the same world, as my wife's TTRPG campaign is not set in the Wayhaven universe, but it is a monster hunters, "real" world setting, so I just decided they do live in the same world.

They don't clash at the start, but Caoimhe, who is a powerful supernatural (she's a baobhan sith), is a bit doubtful at having to team up with a regular human. Yael, on her part, needs some time to feel comfortable working with someone she barely knows. This means that Caoimhe tries to make Yael stay out of the action, and Yael's impulse is to go along. Of course, the mission will force them to learn to trust each other and themselves more.

Dreams & Fangs - haha, it's neither fluffy nor soul destroying (I hope). It's Yael dreaming about Nate biting her in the, ehm, heat of the moment. Nate, who thinks she's having a nightmare because of how restless she is, wakes her up. Only to then realise why she was this restless. I've yet to decide whether I want to sprinkle in some angst then, or if it will just be self-indulgent smut.

I am in love with you - This ficlet touches on some of the issues that will lead to Nate initiating that conversation at the end of B3, as well as on Yael's state of mind. Other than that, I'm planning for some brief flashbacks that come up during the time that they are split up, to try to explain their reasoning, but there won't be any major non-canon events that cause it. (ngl, I'm kind of anxious about writing Nate's part, but have been talking with some wonderful people about it, which has helped <3)

Genesys: An Elden Ring Hack

Now that we’ve gotten the D&D 5e hate out of the way, I want to focus on something more fun: I’m going to be doing an Elden Ring-themed hack for Genesys 👀

What’s Genesys?

To sell you on Genesys, I’d say it’s basically a mix of traditional TTRPGs (D&D, etc.) and story games (Powered by the Apocalypse, etc.). It features a lot of similar mechanics to trad games but the way it resolves die rolls is quite unique and leads to more varied outcomes. Rather than Success/Failure, there are many possibilities for Advantages and Threats, or Triumphs and Despair. It’s basically a system that allows for successes that come with threats or failures that give you an advantage. Triumph and Despair are the “critical” versions of Advantages and Threats.

It all makes the action feel filmic and dynamic, as the tide of battle could turn at any moment. A missed attack roll in something like D&D is just a waste of a turn, while in Genesys a failed attack check could lead to an advantage like creating cover or disorienting the enemy.

Why Elden Ring?

I think this makes sense for Elden Ring because it’s essentially an action game with RPG elements. The frantic nature of combat goes hand-in-hand with the strategy you employ in the split-seconds you have to plan. Genesys has a turn-based combat system but it still feels dynamic and frantic as it plays out. Characters are constantly dodging, attacking, aiming, setting up combos, etc.

Like I said in my previous post, 5e’s combat is boring. Genesys has a lot more potential to capture the feel of Elden Ring’s combat due to having more possibilities for unexpected outcomes and strategy. 5e’s combat is a lot more basic, with all the possibilities being quite straightforward. That’s fine, and if you want to run an Elden Ring game that focuses on dungeoneering then mabye D&D 5e would be the best bet. For my money though, the first thing that people want to do when they think “Elden Ring TTRPG” is do a big, bombastic boss fight. For that, I feel Genesys would be the most fun option.

Of course, if what you want is deadly combat, there are a million OSR games that will capture the feeling of your first time playing a Soulsborne game. The only OSR game I own at the moment is Dungeon Crawl Classics, which I feel is maybe a little too gonzo for Elden Ring’s tone. Perhaps if I ever pick up Old-School Essentials I’ll whip something up for that system as well...

Halo TTRPG you say? 👀

I’ve had ideas floating around for a halo ttrpg for a long time because the existing fan ones are mostly just autistic wargames and while i enjoy that, it doesn’t really get at what makes Halo interesting as a setting to me, y’know? Like I want my ttrpg to be an rpg lol, and Halo’s themes lend it to specific types of roleplay and mechanics to facilitate it that I haven’t seen explored yet.

My current idea is to do a hack of the game Twilight 2000 with a halo theme, since it has some elements of granular wargaming but ties them mechanically into the system’s themes in interesting ways. Twilight 2000 is about an alternate history where the Soviet Union never collapsed and now it and the United States are two declining empires launching one last desperate offensive at each other, and it failing, causing the warfront to collapse and drag society down with it, which screams Halo to me bc I’m mentally ill.

The game gets very specific with weapon stats and managing your equipment, but it’s to emphasize how war is horrible and always has costs. Even when you “win.” You largely want to avoid conflict since you always come out the other side worse, either with fewer supplies or with bodily and mental harm.

The goal of the game is usually either to escape the warzone, try helping the people who live in it as shit hits the fan, or exploit the new power vacuum, and those are what most people/factions are shooting for as well.

I haven’t messed around with it too much since I’ve been in a bit of a creative rut, but I’ll be sure to post about it here when I make progress/have something to show off, since a lot of girls have showed interest

yaa!! me too hehe so triple b centers around the son of an oc i made for a ttrpg campaign, his name is bramble and he's a bunnyfolk! from daisy hills! which conceptually is like if you took the shire and turned them into little animals and anyway uh the ficlet itself is about a spring festival in his hometown, where he has entered his mushrooms into a contest which he is determined to win by any means necessary....

Surely Bramble could learn some manners, it isn't as if he were raised in a barn. Briar knew better than his brother and sweet earth below Rosemary knew both of those boys could get into trouble faster than a badger could dig a hole. Well, Rosemary pats down her dress and apron smoothing out the soft fabric and marches over with a determined step. "Bramble Thunderfoot you explain to me right now just what you think you're doing and you better not say anything about the state of your morels compared to theirs. Miss Woodroof did a fine job last year of selecting only the best and all of us agreed with her decisions, you included."

Ohh yay, thank you! 😌 His deals a lot lol cuz I could talk about him and our game a LOT. I do hope this makes sense and I can explain it well enough and I suppose no one of my game has this tumblr, so I could even spill about his backstory. Also a lot to read ahead, I'm so sorry ^^*

First off some quick to read stuff about him, in case you don't want to read the whole block of text:

- he's currently 23-24 years old, also a Gemini

- he's about 185cm, which is short for an elf

- he's definitely trans masc and definitely not straight, but I can't decide on his sexuality, somewhere in the asexual/bisexual range

- he's bad with technology

- he says he doesn’t care about other people, still always the first to heal everyone else

- bc of his backstory, most of his spells are manipulation based (like Control Person, Tell truth, stuff like that)

- he has a cat mentor spirit, and bc of that, cats usually trust him ✨ I started a drawing of these two but it’s still fairly rough

- magic is life. No seriously, he just doesn’t know what else to do with himself.

let’s start with his veil and clothes, since you talked about it. Not much necessarily to the veil tho, but he has a light allergy, as a night elf/drow would in dnd too. So he wears it to look fashionably protected. His clothes are full on purpose too, both because he likes to look pretty and because he's used to fancy dress as a little disgraced rich boy 😌 Not necessarily the most original backstory as an Elf in that sense I guess 😆. The way he dresses and looks is pretty important to him, because he's insecure, he feels like he can make up with it somehow and also feel more like his 'old self'. Anyways that's on his clothes! Also like the ongoing stars ✨ theme with them doesn’t necessarily have a big reason, He just likes them.

What else..uhh.. backstory. So he's a disgraced rich boy, his parents are assholes and his memory has at this point a lot of holes to give the frame work! The latter is bc of something that happened in game, but basically he doesn't exactly remember everything from his past anymore which managed to make it even worse and he feels a bit lost bc of it.

So, magic is fairly new in the world - it's been rediscovered only like 50 ish years or so? Which makes wizards pretty valuable. Lux's parents are politically involved in their country and thought to make use of his talents once they knew, to raise him to be kind of get them ahead and have Lux manipulate their rivals magically for them. Long story short, he kind of goes through phases but eventually realises how shitty that is and makes a group of friends that kind of change his mind even more, though they don’t know who exactly he is. They genuinely want to make social changes, cuz elf politics be kinda shitty for everyone else. However, his parents find out, drag him back, want him to tell on his friends activities. What he doesn’t know is that one of his 'friends' told on him on the first place. He doesn’t exactly know what happens to all of them but *thinks* they end up mostly dead. And he ends up faking his death, and fleeing the country basically to where we are now. Since it's based on the real world that's the A.D.L. (That words version of Germany). To get by, he becomes a 'Shadowrunner' which is what you play as in the TTRPG, kind of what you can do when you're off grid. I hope this wasn’t too long ^^

All Tangled or D&D (specifically a campaign I am playing in. I'm obsessed. It's a problem)

TTS dnd! I'm writing a one-shot (now 4-shot) of the gang playing D&D. They have a bit of a preamble and then the story takes place in character (in game), with the occasional dialogue interjection. The humor in it is very much inspired by Borderlands 2 DLC. Each chapter will get progressively more dnd invested. 1 will be super easy to follow character builds and mechanics. by 4, we are going to have people trying to break the game.

Bit about it: Chapter 1 - Varian DMs! Everyone else is new to the game. I'm keeping it very simple and easy to follow along, even if you know nothing about dnd or ttrpgs. The players are Raps (elf sorcerer), Eugene (half-elf rogue), Cass (human fighter), and Lance (half-orc barbarian). Varian knows all the rules and everyone else...doesn't. Much banter.

Chapter 2 - Raps DMs! The pcs are all made by her, and she kinda springs it on her friends. PCs are more complex. Things get angsty. I don't want to say much about this one.

Chapter 3 - We get into Vat7K territory. Varian DMs. Nuru, Yong, and Hugo have all played the game before (or something like it). Gameplay gets a bit spicier. Spoilers: Hugo pisses Varian off.

Chapter 4 - I have no outline for this one, but I do have the initiative (pun intended). Hugo DMs a game to prove to Varian and the people closest to him that he is a worthy partner. At least, that's what he's rationalizing. Biggest table with the most dnd knowledge required to follow along.

I am happy to talk more about it if you want specifics! I am full of ideas.
