Afrocarbo Kennedy et al., 2023 (new genus)
Tumblr media
(An individual of Afrocarbo africanus, photographed by Charles J. Sharp, under CC BY-SA 4.0)
Meaning of name: Afrocarbo = African Carbo [defunct genus name for the great cormorant, now in the genus Phalacrocorax]
Species included: A. africanus (reed cormorant, type species, previously in Microcarbo) and A. coronatus (crowned cormorant, previously in Microcarbo)
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Freshwater and coastal habitats in Africa south of the Sahara
Notes: Afrocarbo is a genus of small cormorants, a group of waterbirds that primarily catch prey by swimming underwater, propelling themselves with their feet. Members of this genus are closely related to other small cormorants from Eurasia and Australasia, but can be distinguished from them by having red eyes and a larger patch of bare skin on the face.
In recent years, all of the small cormorants have been classified in the same genus, Microcarbo. However, a new study has estimated that the African small cormorants split from the others around 12 million years ago, in the middle of the Miocene. This is comparable to or older than the estimated divergence ages separating other currently recognized cormorant genera, so the authors suggest that the African species should be reassigned to their own genus, Afrocarbo.

A peek at my Master's Thesis
So as I prepare my master's thesis, I needed to write up a quick summary of what was actually going to be written during that process. The following is the rough draft and bibliography I'm starting with, though more research and details are almost a guarantee for later. This is also only about 500-ish words for the summary, so by no means the most thorough.
Environmental Storytelling, Ludonarrative Harmony, and Immersion: A Summary
For my master’s thesis, I plan on exploring environmental storytelling in videogame narratives and the role that the background plays in immersion as well as ludonarrative harmony. During the Fall 2023 semester, I worked through some of the research for this paper as a directed study with Dr. Kee, which informs some of my bibliography along with some of the work I had done in previous classes with both Dr. Kee and Dr. Fox. I hope to argue, by the end of the paper, that the innocuous and mundane details that we see in the background of video games while playing are actually at the core of the immersive experience. To prove this, I will be referring to past work by many digital media scholars who have been working on game environments for the past 30 years, as well as games that both utilize and fail to utilize their environments for proper immersion.
I will begin my essay talking about the core concepts that I want to show throughout the paper, those being Ludonarrative Harmony (as derived from Clint Hocking’s Ludonarrative Dissonance), theories of immersion and presence within the game world as discussed by J. P. Wolf and Marie-Laure Ryan, among others, and discussions of spatial practice and engagement within a video game’s world. Because of the layered meanings of the terminology, I will be using throughout the paper, I will be laying out some of my own definitions as well to make my essay more clear in its purpose. Specifically, I want to be precise with the term “virtual world,” which I will be using to refer to the environments of the games that will be discussed throughout the paper. An extension of this is “virtual world lore,” which will refer to those details given to the world through mediated sources, such as character dialogue, tooltips, and item descriptions.
For the games I wish to consider throughout this paper, I have selected several from the catalog of FromSoftware, since these titles are famous for their ambiguity and lack of clear narrative as opposed to more traditional role-playing games (RPGs), such as the Fable series. For the FromSoftware examples I have picked Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), Elden Ring (2022), and Bloodborne (2015), as each of these takes a different approach to their worlds and the way their narrative unravels. Bloodborne specifically shows off a high level of ludonarrative harmony in level design and player traversal, reinforcing its main message, through loss of character health, that progression is always painful. Sekiro takes a much more traditional narrative approach, with considerably more dialogue and cutscenes compared to the rest of the FromSoftware titles. Finally, Elden Ring, as an open world game, gives the player a lot more freedom and proves an interesting lens to approach the notion of game world, since it emulates a very large environment, The Lands Between.
In addition to these traditional action RPG experiences, I have also selected some independent games that work well in this discussion. Unpacking (2021), Inside (2016), and Alien: Isolation (2014), all exemplify similar ideas to the FromSoftware titles, though in different forms, especially puzzles. Unpacking and Inside are both of note here for their lack of dialogue entirely, leaving the environment as the primary mode of storytelling for drastically different stories between the two. On the other hand, Alien: Isolation is more of note as an exploration of a place with few additional characters and survival elements recontextualizing the space around the player in times of intensity.
Finally, I will be looking at some games that do not use the full potential of their environments and the detriment to the storytelling that is the result of such an experience. For this, I will be looking at Goodbye Volcano High (2023), and Cyberpunk 2077 (2020), both games that experienced several delays. Both offer empty virtual worlds, where there frequently feels like there should be more for the player to engage with given their Visual Novel and RPG genres.

Lisi Diane Hazer (Pronounced Leesie)
born October 31st 2004
Lisi's hair is dark brown and about halfway down her back. She also has whispy bangs
She's almost 5'6 with a pretty muscular build
Currently a freshman at the University of Wisconsin but is considering transferring to Boston College

She has an older sister as well that played in the world juniors 7 years prior. Lisi also has a younger brother who is 9.
Lisi's dad is a retired NHL player.
She was named captain for the 23-24 world juniors season because it is her 3rd season on the team.
Lisi is terrified of what she'll do after college because pro women's hockey isn't a very reliable career.
She is an insane workaholic always at the gym conditioning or on the ice for practice or studying.
She does like to have fun with her teammates but she is more of the cool reserved type looking out for her teammates.
She has known Will, Gabe, and Ryan for awhile now always seeing them at camps and the combine. (They are friends just not very close)
She gets extremely annoyed in interviews when they ask her about guys instead of hockey.
She is kind of the spokes person for Team USA just because she's so poised and she can be really professional (ehehe this will be fun)
Random Fun Facts:
She's always very sleepy
Loves Legos
She love's sweets and is very anti-crazy healthy diet
She wears headphones everywhere (especially before games so people can't interview her)

The most distant fast radio burst ever
An international team has spotted a remote blast of cosmic radio waves lasting less than a millisecond. This 'fast radio burst' (FRB) is the most distant ever detected. Its source was pinned down by the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) in a galaxy so far away that its light took eight billion years to reach us. The FRB is also one of the most energetic ever observed; in a tiny fraction of a second it released the equivalent of our Sun’s total emission over 30 years.
The discovery of the burst, named FRB 20220610A, was made in June last year by the ASKAP radio telescope in Australia [1] and it smashed the team’s previous distance record by 50 percent.
“Using ASKAP’s array of dishes, we were able to determine precisely where the burst came from,” says Stuart Ryder, an astronomer from Macquarie University in Australia and the co-lead author of the study published today in Science. “Then we used [ESO’s VLT] in Chile to search for the source galaxy, [2] finding it to be older and further away than any other FRB source found to date and likely within a small group of merging galaxies.”
The discovery confirms that FRBs can be used to measure the 'missing' matter between galaxies, providing a new way to 'weigh' the Universe.
Current methods of estimating the mass of the Universe are giving conflicting answers and challenging the standard model of cosmology. “If we count up the amount of normal matter in the Universe — the atoms that we are all made of — we find that more than half of what should be there today is missing,” says Ryan Shannon, a professor at the Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, who also co-led the study. “We think that the missing matter is hiding in the space between galaxies, but it may just be so hot and diffuse that it's impossible to see using normal techniques.”
“Fast radio bursts sense this ionised material. Even in space that is nearly perfectly empty they can ‘see’ all the electrons, and that allows us to measure how much stuff is between the galaxies,” Shannon says.
Finding distant FRBs is key to accurately measuring the Universe’s missing matter, as shown by the late Australian astronomer Jean-Pierre ('J-P') Macquart in 2020. “J-P showed that the further away a fast radio burst is, the more diffuse gas it reveals between the galaxies. This is now known as the Macquart relation. Some recent fast radio bursts appeared to break this relationship. Our measurements confirm the Macquart relation holds out to beyond half the known Universe,” says Ryder.
“While we still don’t know what causes these massive bursts of energy, the paper confirms that fast radio bursts are common events in the cosmos and that we will be able to use them to detect matter between galaxies, and better understand the structure of the Universe,” says Shannon.
The result represents the limit of what is achievable with telescopes today, although astronomers will soon have the tools to detect even older and more distant bursts, pin down their source galaxies and measure the Universe’s missing matter. The international Square Kilometre Array Observatory is currently building two radio telescopes in South Africa and Australia that will be capable of finding thousands of FRBs, including very distant ones that cannot be detected with current facilities. ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope, a 39-metre telescope under construction in the Chilean Atacama Desert, will be one of the few telescopes able to study the source galaxies of bursts even further away than FRB 20220610A.
Notes
[1] The ASKAP telescope is owned and operated by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, on Wajarri Yamaji Country in Western Australia.
[2] The team used data obtained with the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2), the X-shooter and the High Acuity Wide-field K-band Imager (HAWK-I) instruments on ESO’s VLT. Data from the Keck Observatory in Hawai'i, US, was also used in the study.
IMAGE....This artist’s impression (not to scale) illustrates the path of the fast radio burst FRB 20220610A, from the distant galaxy where it originated all the way to Earth, in one of the Milky Way’s spiral arms. The source galaxy of FRB 20220610A, pinned down thanks to ESO’s Very Large Telescope, appears to be located within a small group of interacting galaxies. It’s so far away its light took eight billion years to reach us, making FRB 20220610A the most distant fast radio burst found to date.  CREDIT ESO/M. Kornmesser

Today's Bat: Fringe-Lipped Bat
Your best friend sets you up on a blind date. She says, "He's a real foodie, has great facial hair, and he makes his own cologne!" You're a little apprehensive when you're packed into a Jeep, and become even more so as you're taken out to the Peruvian Amazon. You find yourself alighted to a beautiful stream... the romance in the air crests... and you look up into the face of your date:
Tumblr media
Environmental Impact: These guys are fairly omnivorous, though they're best known for eating frogs (more on this in the Power rating). They've got a wide range across northern South America, and are of no conservational concern. Their usefulness knows no bounds: they're a foundational food source for predators, they control pest species like katydids and mosquitos, they provide fertilizer in the form of guano, and they're choice research specimens thanks to their sociable natures and unique behaviors.
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇/5
Beauty: Look at that mug. Those namesake lip protrusions are a real showstopper. Additionally, Fringe-Lipped Bats are famous perfumeries: they're well-studied for their "forearm crusts", which are orange patches along their wings where they cake a musk-and-fruit scented mixture of glandular secretions and saliva. These crusts are lady magnets (read: sexually selected traits). Researchers have reported locating roosts based on the group's collective odor. If human beings can appreciate the smells of whale vomit and beaver ass, I think we can make room in our hearts for Fringe-Lipped Bat crusts.
🦇🦇🦇🦇/5
Power: As promised, it's time to discuss this bat's superpower. The whiskers aren't just for show: they can sense the presence of poison. This, combined with their ability to differentiate between vocalizations, allows the bat to select only the most delicious frogs. They have the ability to eat nearly anything (including other bats!!), yet they continue to refine their palates. Respect.
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇/5
Overall: The Fringe-Lipped Romeo is infinitely loveable. I'd highly recommend looking into Merlin Tuttle's research and photography of this species... and honestly, everything else Merlin Tuttle does. No further notes.

good lord i just read your whole dissertation (and half the incredibly well cited links) on the fucking ryanrosspetewentz history and i’m a bit stoned and have so many thoughts i hope you don’t mind me sharing
anyway. i’m a fucking wreck.. just absolutely devastated about ryan’s life story and the insanity of the scene in that time while simultaneously so impressed by the quality of your writing? i was absolutely enthralled the whole time i was reading, the literary allusions the Homoeroticism the ludicrous lives they were living the role of the early internet and state of popular culture (i can’t tell you how far up my metaphorical alley this is. i’m a huge fob fan and a media/music studies student and wrote my final paper on the rise and fall of emo - it’s not good but i had such a fucking good time writing it i didn’t even care i got a B)
and just some of the most insane real quotes from them. he’s so loved but so unloved. everything palahunik-linked. all of keltie colleen’s quotes about ryan.. oh god the lyrics to Camisado
i’ve been a fan of both bands but had no CLUE about this? god. i find it insane that i was alive at this time but absolutely not clued in to celebrity culture or the internet so just. completely fucking unaware.. i’m not going to lie to you some of those j-14 covers hit me like a truck. like seeing a parallel universe i can’t believe that’s the same group of some kinda nerdy dads doing music. (also i read the whole urie paper mag article and i hated it the whole time.)
god i just enjoyed it so much (although i’m still weeping) and i could sit here and keep bulletpointing my favourite parts but i feel like i’m already coming in very strong. but thank you for like. the most entertaining hour or two of my life, i can’t wait to read more of your work xo
thank you! and yeah ryans life is really tragic. this didnt make it into the article because i didnt really have enough proof and i didnt want to detract from my credibility by making wild claims.
but i think ryans life gets even worse somehow. while i was researching i noticed that there were two very different names going around for ryans mom-- i believe they got printed in two different magazines but so much is behind paywalls or has been lost to time its tough to say where exactly it originated
one of the names had her maiden name and the other didnt. it struck me as unusual that ryans mom would be using the ross last name if she and ryans dad had been estranged for ryans entire life.
it could have just been a mistake or a made up rumor that caught on but then i noticed ryans dad was a casino dealer in addition to being an abusive alcoholic. ryans dad was also older than average, he was 60 when he died and ryan was only 20 which means he wouldve been 40ish when ryan was born.
rolling stone also described ryans mom as "free spirited" and that she was not in contact with ryan which is like the polite way of saying on drugs. this was compounded by the fact that it got printed that ryan was briefly in contact with his mom again post-fame and then stopped, which is also a bit odd, like she only wanted money. i felt like maybe at one point they gave a fake name for ryans mom to obfuscate her actual identity and then just said her name later on.
ryans dad being so old especially was weird because i just did not see it as probable a 40ish year old woman would conceive a child with someone and then leave and have no involvement in that childs life because shes so "free spirited" even after the dad died, especially if the dad was an abusive alcoholic
this was also all so bizarre and set off alarm bells and the math was not mathing so i tried to figure out which name was his actual mom. the one i thought was fake was super common but a las vegas public records listing immediately came up for the maiden name which would put ryans mom at 20 years younger than his dad-- aka she was 20 and he was 40 when he was born. a second listing also came up that would make her 11 years younger
i cant prove it and its very tenuous and speculative, but it would make much more sense for a 19-28 year old possible addict to get knocked up by a 39 year old casino dealer in vegas and then abandon her child with him forever to go be "free spirited" because hes an abusive alcoholic than for a nearly middle aged woman to do that for seemingly no reason.
this is also where "the heart is deceitful above all things" comes in because theres this pervasive rumor that pete said the book reminded him of ryan, which i couldnt prove happened but the book is about a little kid with an addict mom in an out of jail thats physically abused by his religious older relatives when not in her care. i suspect ryan said pete said this on the messageboard panic set up to talk about the book, but the messageboard is long gone lol

More of a suggestion if you wanna watch a Holocaust film that isnt so traumatic as Schindler's List or the Pianist, Life is Beautiful is actually a really good film on the subject even using the theme of "humor can get you through the worst"
I think I am vaguely aware of "Life is Beautiful".
I think a big problem behind movies that deal with the Holocaust is that there is a very fine line between accurate portrayal in a way I can emotionally handle, and a portrayal that sanitises the event to a degree where it becomes insulting (see: Boy in the Striped Pajamas).
I still find Maus to be the best balance in terms of fully giving a first hand account of the full horrors of surviving the Holocaust but due to the presentation of being both a book as well as the art giving just enough degree of separation where I don't feel like I want to die afterwards for a full month after finishing it.
It's difficult tho because I can never fully predict WHAT will trip up the little switch in my head which makes a WWII set story deeply traumatic for me to watch. I have never watched "Saving Private Ryan" but I have no interest in doing so. Because I watched History Buff's video on in and the clip of the kid lying on the Normandy beach crying for his mom bothered me so much I completely swore off ever watching the movie.
It's a really difficult balance and I try my best to listen to people's experiences with war films and how hard it hits, specifically around WWII (although not always. For instance I also have 0 interest in ever watching "Come and See" based on its reputation and I can't remember if that is WWII adjacent or if it's specifically the Belarusian war. Either way I know the movie's reputation and despite Mosfilms making it free on their youtube channel, I know I can't handle that one.)
I feel it's worth mentioning that when I was 16 we studied WWII in high school for a month or so, and our teacher had us watching recreation footage of the Nuremberg Trials which included real life footage taken by the Allies of the concentration camps. And when you're 16 that kind of imagery hits extremely hard and puts things into a much more realistic perspective. (also pretty sure I read Maus for the first time when I was 16 as well but I can't fully recall)
Although in all honesty, most historically accurate films upset me greatly depending on the subject matter. Weirdly enough, I do better with documentaries revolving around these types of subjects than I do film. It's probably something to do with emotional separation which documentaries tend to have versus film which specifically design themselves for emotional response.
Anyway I'm rambling.
I think I have had enough exposure to the Holocaust in narrative media where I would rather stick with watching documentaries about the subject matter I haven't watched before, and just sticking to re-reading Maus and similar accounts in book form. Rather than watch narrative movies about the subject itself.
That being said tho, apparently there's a 4 part miniseries from 1978 called "Holocaust" which, after being released in Germany, was so affecting that during the discussion panel that ran after each episode had German citizens phoning in either enraged saying the show was purely fiction and nothing of the sort happened, or in contrast, SEVERAL German citizens phoning in to confess how in 1938 they participated in Kristallnacht. I might be able to watch that one. And although it is about fictional characters (for the most part) I also need to finish Osamu Tezuka's "Adolf" which I stopped halfway due to how upsetting it was. As well as continue my man Shigeru Mizuki's manga "Showa" which I also stopped reading for a short time to take a break from the events at the start of the series (I haven't even gotten to WWII in that manga series yet. So I don't know if he covers the holocaust specifically as he is writing pure from a Japanese point of view).
Anyway my point is, I am very careful with my exposure just because I have severely upset myself in the past regarding this subject matter. So I'm always trying to find methods to learn more about the subject matter from accurate sources in a way where I won't severely cause lasting emotional damage to myself. But because of that I tend to avoid films and rather seek it out elsewhere.

H U H J A D E -> HYBE SOLOIST
#JADE_BACKSTORY
HUH JADE is a 22 year old soloist under HYBE. Born in Toronto, Canada, Jade was the youngest in a family of 2 boys named Ryan and Matthew and her parents April and Nick.
Since Jade was little, she was surrounded by the KPOP as her parents and brothers were huge fans of the genre. At first, Jade denied her attraction to the genre, but one day after watching Lee Hyori perform 10 minutes she became a fan like everyone else. Jade would become a huge fan of Lee Hyori, crediting her as the reason why she wanted to become an idol singer. Jade wanted to be an IT GIRL, just like her.
Jade's parents spoiled Jade rotten, always giving her whatever she wanted and let her do whatever activity she wanted as well. So when Jade approached them about putting her into singing, rapping, and dancing classes, they immediately obligated, putting her in some of the best classes in Toronto.
When Jade was 16, she moved to South Korea with her family to continue her studies at Seoul Arts while her brothers went to university. She would attend auditions on the weekends, hoping to get into at least one company. One day while leaving a shopping mall, Jade would be scouted by a man who then invited her to audition for their company. Jade thought the man was shady, but agreed to audition as long as her parents could come.
A few days later after her audition, she would receive her first callback from the shady man. The man met Jade and her family at a nice restaurant before revealing that the company Jade had auditioned for was actually HYBE.
This would mark the beginning of her journey.

hello ryan!! what is a language or dialect you want to know more about?
hi anon!! i like this question a lot thank u!! i'll have to say the long-dead, non-indo-european pre-greek substrate.
fun summary: for a long time linguists thought there was an indo-european language in the balkan peninsula that was spoken before greek and replaced by it ("pelasgian"). it was with a 1956 article by f. b. j. kuiper and a subsequent 1972 study by e. furnée that the existence of a language was confirmed, but its "indo-european-ness" was debunked
r. beekes' etymological dictionary of greek and later the aptly named pre-greek continue their work. it is fascinating to be able to reconstruct so much of a language out of holes in the etymologies of words in another language!!

'“Barbenheimer” is officially here, and the battle between the bomb and the bombshell is about to ignite the box office.
Greta Gerwig’s cotton candy-colored “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie as the plastic, fantastic doll, is expected to generate a huge $95 million to $110 million from 4,200 North American theaters over the weekend. Given the omnipresence of “Barbie” (the marketing is practically inescapable, with enough memes and marketing tie-ins to last a lifetime), initial estimates are all over the place. Warner Bros. is projecting a more conservative $75 million to start, while rivals and exhibitors believe the PG-13 movie could make as much as $140 million between Friday and Sunday.
In any case, “Barbie” will claim the top spot over Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb drama “Oppenheimer,” which is aiming to collect a solid $50 million from 3,600 cinemas through Sunday. Universal is backing the R-rated historical biopic, which cost $100 million.
“Oppenheimer” runs at three hours (“Barbie” clocks in at just under two), which may limit the screenings per day. However, Nolan’s epic will benefit from premium large format screens like Imax, which is dedicating its entire footprint to his film for three weeks.
Together, the seemingly different blockbusters with twin release dates are fueling the phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer.” AMC Theatres, the nation’s biggest cinema chain, reported that 40,000 people have already purchased tickets for double features of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day — up 20,000 from last week.
The $145 million-budgeted “Barbie” stars too many A-listers to name, but we’ll give it a shot: Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Helen Mirren, John Cena and Will Ferrell round out the cast of the fantasy comedy, which follows Barbie and Ken as they leave the comfort and familiarity of Barbie-Land on a quest for self-discovery in the real world.
“Oppenheimer,” adapted by Nolan from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus,” is an equally star-studded character study about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy plays the man who led the development of the atomic bomb, alongside an ensemble of Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Alden Ehrenreich.
The potent combination of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” as well as last weekend’s champion “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” is expected to fuel one of the biggest box office weekends in ages. Summer season has otherwise produced a string of underperforming options, like “The Flash,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.”
Tom Cruise’s newest “Mission” looks to add $28 million to $30 million in its second weekend of release, a decline of roughly 50% from its debut. The seventh installment in Paramount and Skydance’s globe-trotting action franchise opened to $56 million in North America and $234 million globally. It cost $291 million before marketing, so Ethan Hunt’s latest death-defying adventure needs to remain a draw throughout the summer to justify that price tag.
Elsewhere, the unlikely box office hit “Sound of Freedom” is imminently crossing the $100 million mark, which will put the film among the top 16 highest grossing of the year. The low-budget, faith-based movie about child sex trafficking has generated a remarkable $85.7 million to date. That’s thanks mostly to the religious and conservative media groups that have rallied behind the film.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst, calls “Barbenheimer” a “movie marketers dream come true.” He adds that the craze is “creating a rising tide of interest that should also boost the fortunes of ‘MI7’ and ‘Sound of Freedom’ as moviegoers flood the multiplex in search of movies to catch on the big screen.”'

Emily Deschanel doesn’t know why Hollywood has continued to tap her to play doctors, but she’s not about to start protesting now.
“I don’t know what screams ‘science’ about me, but I’ll take it,” she tells The Daily Beast’s Obsessed over Zoom with a laugh. “When I got the part on Bones, a friend of mine said, ‘Oh my gosh, that must be your dream role,’ knowing how much I loved learning about forensic science. … Science was my favorite subject when I was a kid, so I’m not going to argue with it. I enjoy it too.”
More than five years after wrapping up her 12-season run as forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan on the beloved Fox procedural drama Bones, Deschanel has returned to television in Netflix’s Devil in Ohio, playing a hospital psychiatrist whose world is thrown into disarray when she decides to shelter a troubled teen escaping a satanic cult.
The role is a departure from the crime/procedural genre that has defined most of Deschanel’s career, which, after Bones, has included a guest spot as Nathan Fillion’s ex-wife in ABC’s The Rookie and a 12-episode arc as a recovering drug addict in TNT’s Animal Kingdom.
For Deschanel, things have a funny way of coming full circle. She first met Daria Polatin—the author, creator and showrunner of Devil in Ohio—in the mid-90s, when they were both studying acting at Boston University. They kept in touch after graduation but eventually lost contact, even if they continued to keep tabs on each other’s work from afar.
So when she was pitched the idea of starring in an eight-episode adaptation of Devil in Ohio last summer, Deschanel was intrigued both by the prospect of reuniting with her former college classmate and exploring what would compel her character, Dr. Suzanne Mathis, to commit “a huge ethical breach” with a patient named Mae (Madeleine Arthur) that puts the rest of her family at risk.
Margaret Qualley Is Phenomenal in Netflix’s ‘Maid’THE DAILY BEAST’S OBSESSEDKevin Fallon
“Suzanne has some things that happened in her past that make her more susceptible to wanting to save someone like Mae,” Deschanel explains. “I think investigating where Mae comes from all stems from Suzanne’s past and trauma that she experienced herself, and the fact that she never fully dealt with what she experienced. … It’s almost as if Suzanne is trying to save herself through Mae, save her younger self from what she [had once] experienced.”
Deschanel was always one of Polatins first picks to bring Suzanne to life. “Emily has incredible emotional and intellectual intelligence that she brings to her roles, in addition to warmth and depth,” Polatin says. “The character of Suzanne is a doctor, a mother, a daughter and a survivor. Emily’s talent and range as an actor allows her to be all these parts of Suzanne.”
Polatin, whose other screenwriting credits include Jack Ryan and Heels, first began working on Devil in Ohio eight years ago, after hearing the true story of a psychiatrist in the Buckeye State who once took in a devil-worshiping teen. “I was fascinated by the idea of someone trying to escape a cult,” says the author-turned-showrunner. “I also love the dynamics of micro-communities. How do other people influence the way we talk, dress, think? And when you’ve grown up in an insular community, can you ever escape your past?”
The insulated nature of Mae’s upbringing was of particular interest to Deschanel, who quips that she has “watched every documentary about cults” that she can find, because she finds the psychology of these groups “really fascinating.” For the show, Polatin and her writers’ room used countless hours of research to create their own cult—down to inventing their history and ideology—and even wrote a manifesto to give to their heads of department.
Even as a self-proclaimed skeptic who doesn’t believe in the devil, Deschanel couldn’t help but feel “creeped out a little bit on set.” The fictional cult is unique because “they don’t have to recruit new members,” she explains. “They just breed them. They just birth new members, so it makes it harder to get information on those types of cults … because they’re less integrated into our daily lives, even less than other cults. They really keep to themselves; they don’t have that outside interaction.”
Regular viewers of Deschanel’s work might notice that some mannerisms have carried over to her performance in Devil in Ohio from certain past characters. For instance, when her character says something assertive in a professional setting (à la Bones’ Dr. Brennan), she will often tip her head slightly to the left with big eyes, almost daring her counterpart to disagree with her in a non-combative way.
While she concedes that Dr. Mathis shares a few professional similarities with Dr. Brennan, Deschanel says she elected to play the former because she felt “different enough” from the latter. “Once you do one character that you’re known for, you’re going to be thought of in that way. I think there are probably actors who want to be considered as doctors and people don’t think of them as doctors, and now I want people to think of me as [something] different than a doctor.”
Nevertheless, in conversation, Deschanel lights up at the first mention of Bones, which she lovingly describes as “the show that launched a thousand friendships.”
For 12 years, the actress played television’s favorite forensic anthropologist, who teams up with FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) to help the Bureau investigate homicides by identifying too-far-gone human remains. With her literal, empirical view of the world complementing his deeply emotive, instinctive nature, Brennan and Booth became one of television’s all-time slow-burn romantic couples—so much so that the actors playing them worked with an acting coach every weekend for the first six seasons to develop the characters’ will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic.
“I miss him so much. I text with him here and there, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen him.”
Deschanel thinks mutual respect on and off the screen was the key to building her partnership with Boreanaz, who taught her the importance of setting a tone on set as the lead of a show. “He always treated me as an equal. He was a big star [on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel], and I was coming from some indie films when we started doing the show, [but] he always treated me as if we were coming from the same place and with great respect, and we built a great friendship over time,” she says. “I miss him so much. I text with him here and there, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen him.”
What does she miss most about working with Boreanaz? “Our inside jokes,” Deschanel says before exclusively revealing one of their many inside jokes to The Daily Beast’s Obsessed. “He’d put a coffee stirrer inside the foam of the interrogation room,” she recalls with a laugh, “so that was always forever known as ‘coffee corner.’ There are just different things that are just really hard to translate … but I guess [I miss] laughing with him on set and him making fun of me maybe. I enjoyed it all.”
Apart from Boreanaz, Deschanel says she is still “texting with different Bones people every week.” She is still close with Michaela Conlin and Tamara Taylor (“We did some amazing cocktail Zooms during the pandemic, and we’re trying to get together,” she reveals with a smile), and recently caught up with a few of the actors who played a rotating group of interns at the fictional Jeffersonian Institute (Pej Vahdat, Eugene Byrd, Carla Gallo, Ignacio Serricchio). The former castmates continue to marvel at how Bones has, in the 17 years since the series premiere, inspired a generation of young women (and men!) to pursue a career in science.
“With Brennan, I never thought [the show] would last as long as it did,” Deschanel admits. “[But] I thought hard about what characters I was putting into people’s living rooms, and I thought about how young girls would be watching it. And being a feminist and always wanting to inspire girls, I loved the fact that the character was in STEM, was unapologetically a genius, and made more money than the men in her life and wasn’t going to bat an eyelash about it.”
Going forward, Deschanel’s professional plans are simple: She wants to tackle projects that will make audiences see her in a new light. “I’d love to do a comedy or two,” she says with a hearty laugh, “and play characters that are really different … so I’m not necessarily looking for anything in particular.”
(When asked if she would like to appear in Yellowjackets opposite her good friend Melanie Lynskey, whom she met on the set of Stephen King’s Rose Red, Deschanel hardly misses a beat: “I would love to work with Melanie! I’m just so excited for her, and it just feels like such a long time coming [that] people are really recognizing her talent. That makes me teary-eyed to think about.”)
Having also worked as a producer and director on Bones, Deschanel says she has been using those experiences to develop projects behind the camera—even if, she admits, producing takes a long time. “Without getting into specifics, a project that I’m trying to get off the ground is a story about a group of women fighting for freedom,” she adds. “I think there’s always going to be a feminist slant to things that I’m attracted to as well.”

WIP Challenge
Tagged by @kimbapisnotsushi!
Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous.
Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs. (You can make your own post or reblog this one!)
Uh, so a couple addenda. I have multiple files that include multiple fics in them, and most of those are prompt lists; I won’t be including the prompt lists, but I will be including the multi-fic files that are series. And, I normally don’t tag as many people as specified anyway, but 1) I won’t even be counting my WIPs because it’s a lot, and 2) I don’t even follow nearly as many people as I have WIPs because it is a lot. I’ve been writing fic for almost 8 years now, so my ADHD self has naturally accumulated a ton of unfinished fics.
As usual, I’m tagging anyone who wants to do this!
Now, under a read more, because I really was not lying about there being a lot. They’re separated by fandom in alphabetical order (there are 41 total), and to make it a bit more navigable (at least in the browser; sorry, app-users), they’ll be numbered in the "##.” format.

Exploring Purposeful Design Patterns to Inspire and Elevate Living Spaces
Abstract
Design patterns play a crucial role in shaping the ambiance and functionality of living spaces. This article delves into the science behind purposeful design patterns, drawing from empirical studies and established principles of environmental psychology. By understanding and applying these patterns, individuals can create harmonious, inspiring, and uplifting environments within their homes.
Introduction
The design of our living spaces profoundly impacts our well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. Purposeful design patterns are rooted in scientific research and offer effective strategies for optimizing residential environments. This article explores key design patterns supported by scientific evidence, providing insights into how they can be applied to inspire and elevate living spaces.

Incorporating Purposeful Design Patterns
Biophilic Design:
Incorporate elements of nature within your living space to enhance well-being and connection with the environment (Browning et al., 2014).
Introduce indoor plants, natural materials, and views of greenery to reduce stress and increase productivity.
Natural Light and Ventilation:
Maximize natural light and airflow to create bright, airy, and inviting interiors (Heschong, 2003).
Use light-colored curtains or blinds that allow ample sunlight while maintaining privacy.
Functional Layouts:
Optimize space functionality by employing ergonomic furniture arrangements and intuitive traffic flow (Baird & Sampson, 2017).
Ensure that key areas like kitchens and bathrooms are efficiently organized for convenience and accessibility.
Color Harmony:
Apply principles of color psychology to evoke desired emotions and moods (Elliot & Maier, 2014).
Use a balanced color palette that promotes tranquility, creativity, or energy depending on the room's purpose.
Personalization and Meaningful Decor:
Infuse personal touches and meaningful decor items that reflect your interests, values, and aspirations (Owens et al., 2017).
Display artwork, photographs, or artifacts that evoke positive memories and emotions.
Multi-sensory Experiences:
Engage multiple senses through textures, scents, and sounds to create immersive and stimulating environments (Jiang et al., 2017).
Incorporate soft textiles, ambient lighting, and soothing background music for a sensory-rich atmosphere.
Conclusion
Purposeful design patterns offer a systematic approach to transforming living spaces into inspiring and elevated environments. By integrating principles from environmental psychology and design research, individuals can cultivate homes that nurture well-being, creativity, and a sense of connection with the surrounding space.
