EVERYONE SHUT UP. I’M WRITING AN ESSAY. I CANT STOP THINKING OF THE DO I WANNA KNOW ASK.

first of all. THAT ASK UNLOCKED A CORE MEMORY, because do i wanna know was the song ellie and reader were originally going to write in ch.4 and perform for the grammys in ch.5. INSANE? CORRECT. that was the plan. that was the moment. the build-up. the raw honesty. the big reveal without even saying it outright.

the amount of DAYDREAMING i had of that performance and them singing those lyrics looking at each other STRAIGHT IN THE EYE.

the lyrics??? they're basically screaming at each other without using each other's names:

“Been wondering if your heart’s still open and if so I wanna know what time it shuts.”“I dreamt about you nearly every night this week.”“Do I wanna know if this feeling flows both ways?”

LIKE BABY. BABY. THIS IS NOT A DUET. THIS IS A BREAKDOWN ON A STAGE IN FRONT OF MILLIONS.

BUT. i changed my mind last minute. the lyrics were TOO telling for them to keep pretending they didn't know what the other felt. adrien and marinette blindness who. also i wanted a more guitary-punky-experimental vibe?

so i shelved it. not because it wasn’t perfect, but because it was too perfect. too telling. and instead i picked “She.” because it's still gay. it's still vulnerable. but it’s got more edge. more punk. it lets them wink at the truth without sobbing through it.

also “do i wanna know” has turned kinda basic even though it's a certified BANGER and hits every single time.

BUT you know what made me the most SICK ab that ask? the fact that the same exact lyrics in the Arctic Monkeys version and the Hozier cover somehow feel like completely different emotional realities.

arctic monkeys version = chapters 1-5. they’re hiding it. playing the game. falling. its sultry. it's so COLLIDE early era.

hozier version = chapters 6–8. slowed down. raw. aching. every word like a wound.

in hozier’s version, that lyrics are no longer a flirt. it’s a confession. a plea. ellie’s version of it post-breakdown? a whisper. reader’s? a sob. same lyrics, but now they mean “why did you leave me.” now they mean “i was yours and it still wasn’t enough.”

the shift is devastating. because that’s the whole point of collide.

the songs don’t change—but they do. their love changes. their trust. their fear. so the words stay the same, but suddenly they’re coated in grief. and memory. and everything they can’t say anymore.

in conclusion: the hozier version is them singing it apart. the arctic monkeys version was what they would’ve sung together.

and i kinda regret not making it their grammys performance song.

Here’s my Woe’s Hallow take:

The mechanism of the Glasgow block removed consent between innie interactions. This is one again intrinsic to being an innie. This is not the first time a crime has been committed against the innies. The moment they are born, the moment they choose to leave and cannot, they are being treated as subhuman and are given zero consent.

The story is about the horrors that severance creates.

The themes are dark because the idea of severing your work life from your home life and not letting the other version of you out, is extremely, deeply evil.

Now about the scene:

It’s open to interpretation, as the writers and actors have mentioned many times before, so I think we owe it to the fans to allow multiple viewpoints of it.

My take:

The conversation prior to the tent scene—Helena laughing at the story and thinking it’s ridiculous, Helena lashing out, then apologizing for being mean to Irving, Helena apologizing to Mark for distracting him from finding Gemma—indicate she is going through a character transformation of sorts. There are moments where you can see the Helly in her shine through. Not via severance, just her inner child, when she feels safe to do so.

The warm, red lighting that envelops both Mark and Helena during the scene reflects that they’re connected, in the moment, together. Red is the color of love and passion in severance. This is not an accident.

And then afterwards, she says she doesn’t like who she is on the outside. We have no reason to believe this is not true. There is very little political motive to her being vulnerable in this way. We have seen this season be the season of reintegration. Is this the beginnings of a form of reintegration for Helena? Realizing that she doesn’t like who her father shaped her into? Embracing Helly again?

I am not trying to absolve Helena, and she is certainly morally grey as is nearly every character. But I think her arc, her relationship with Mark, is inevitable. Mark and Helena’s innies are drawn to each other so their outies will be too. The severance barrier doesn’t keep emotions from flooding through, especially when they’re as strong as love.

And I do think it’s very key to consider why Irving (paranoid, detail-oriented, intelligent) figured Helena out—through her mannerisms, her lies, her inconsistencies—whereas Mark (emotional, sensitive, attentive) did not. He only saw Helly in her. Maybe because he found Helly in her.
