Body Like a Back Road
Request: Joe Burrow and reader go on spontaneous road trip during off season.
Warnings: smut (fingering, intercourse), language, mentions of a funeral
A/N: my second stand alone Joe fic! Enjoy!
Tumblr media
"In 500 feet, turn right". The voice of the GPS startled you out of your nap, your head knocking against the window as the car went over a pothole. "Ow!" You pressed a hand to the side of your face, grimacing at the sharp pain. Joe snickered as he glanced over at you, his hands flexing open and closed as he balanced them on the top of the steering wheel. "Good, you're awake."
"Where are we?", you grumbled out as you stood up, stretching your arm over your chest in hopes of getting the knot out of your shoulder from sleeping against the door. There were no signs to indicate your current location, and for the past eight hours, everything out of your window looked the same, nothing but trees along each side and the open road.
"We're just outside of St. Louis. At least according to the GPS, but I think I made a couple wrong turns about an hour ago, so I know fuck all where we are." Joe bit at his thumb nail, something he always did when he was stressed. "Great." You whispered, leaning your head against the window. The vibration of the car was lulling you back to sleep, your eyelids growing heavy.
The season was finally over, and after a less than stellar year, Joe was going stir crazy sitting around with nothing to do. He could only hit the gym so many times a day and watch game tape over and over before it started to get boring. When you mentioned to him that you had to travel to Denver to attend the funeral of one of your distant cousins as a favor to your mom, he offered to tag along with you, and against your better judgement you said yes.
Going to a family funeral was something that a boyfriend did for their girlfriend, not for their fuck buddy. You didn't want to give Joe, and honestly, you're own heart, the wrong idea about where you stood, but the thought of making a 17 hour drive alone sounded like torture.
Your relationship with Joe was...complicated, to say the least. You had been friends through college, and for the longest, it was nothing more than that, but when you both ended up in Cincy, Joe was drafted to the Bengals and you had just settled in the city with your first big-girl job, it became something more. You were both lonely, living in a new place, and you leaned on each other for support.
The first time you slept with Joe, you considered it a fluke, a slip up that could easily happen between friends. After months of consistently ending up in bed together, you realized that the two of you were in too deep. Now, a couple years later, it had become more habit than anything else, and you weren't even sure if you could call yourself friends as much as you had become a source of comfort for one another. You knew it was best to end it before anyone got hurt, but for some reason, you just couldn't.
Joe slapped your thigh, making you jump. "Hey, I need you to stay up. This GPS is useless."
"In 200 feet, turn left onto Franklin Street."
"Franklin Street?!" Joe gestured wildly to the left of him. "There is no fuckin' Franklin Street! Does she want me to drive into the woods?" Joe scoffed as he leaned back in his seat. You leaned forward to see there in fact was no Franklin Street, chuckling to yourself. "Don't let her get to you, J. You know she's not real, right?"
"Ya know what...its not even the GPS, its your damn car. Piece of junk." He slapped the console, the volume dial falling out of place. You grabbed it, shoving it back onto its slot. "Hey, Darla has been there for me since I was 16. She is a classic." Truthfully, Darla was hanging on by a thread, and the last time you brought her to a mechanic they offered you $200 for her to use for scraps, but you didn't have the money for a new or gently used car right now, and as long as you didn't go over 50 mph, she drove fine.
"A classic piece of shit", he mumbled under his breath, earning a slap on the arm from you. "Shit!", he rubbed at his chest, "do you wanna drive? 'Cause I can pull over right now."
"Funny, because she wasn't a piece of shit all of the times we were doin' it in the backseat." You propped your feet on the dashboard.
"Yeah, good times." Joe's ran his fingers through his hair nervously, his face starting to heat up. He was glad you went back to sleep so you couldn't see him start to sweat.
"Wake me up when we get to Kansas." You grabbed Joe's hat from the dashboard, pulling it over your eyes to block out the evening sun.
****
The next few hours went by like a dream as you went in and out of consciousness, listening to Joe's terrible singing along to the Hamilton soundtrack as he managed to eat through all of the snacks you packed for a two day drive.
You took in a deep breath as you woke up to darkness, the overhead light blinding you as you rubbed your eyes to try to focus your vision. As soon as you noticed you were alone, the driver's door was wide open, and Joe was gone, you began to panic.
"Joe! Joe, where are you? This isn't funny!" All horror movie protocol went out of the window as you unbuckled and climbed out of the car.
"Joe!" Silence. You grabbed your phone out of your back pocket and turned on the flashlight as you rounded the back of the car, illuminating the eerie thicket of trees you were parked next to. "Joe, I swear to God, if you're hiding somewhere I'm gonna kill you." You took a step forward, jumping as you heard a twig snap beneath your feet. You held your breath, feeling your pounding heartbeat in your ears as you listened for any sound of life. Again, silence.
"You know what? I'm just gonna assume you're already dead and keep it pushing." You called out to the open. You had seen Friday the 13th enough times to know there was no way you were going to outrun anyone. You turned back to the car, noticing a figure flash by out of the corner of your eye.
"BOOO!!" Joe jumped out from behind the car, his arms swinging above his head to appear terrifying. You collided with him, bouncing off of his strong frame, and landed on your ass.
"Ha! You should have seen your face!" Joe bellowed over with laughter as you stood and dusted the dirt off of your pants, a scowl on your face. "Fuck, that was so worth it." He wiped a tear from the corner of his eye.
You shoved him, hard, making his back hit the car. "What the hell were you even doing? Why did we stop?" You opened the trunk and grabbed a sweatshirt out of your bag, feeling the chill on your skin as the temperature dropped after dark. "Had to take a piss."
"I feel like we've been driving forever. How far to the motel?" You were beginning to get cranky, your empty stomach contributing to your sour mood. "Still got another two hours until we get to Kansas City and stop for the night." You both got back into the car, but as Joe tried to turn the engine, it only sputtered a couple of times before dying out.
"C'mon", Joe groaned, cranking the key again to no avail. 'Fuck!" He slammed his hand against the steering wheel, hitting the horn. "Your piece of shit car died, Y/N."
"Its not Darla's fault, you probably made her mad stopping in the middle of nowhere."
He pressed his forehead to the wheel. "Please tell me you have roadside assistance."
"Um...define "roadside assistance"?" You had AAA at one point, but let your membership expire when you couldn't afford the monthly payment anymore. "Y/N! What if I wasn't here?! You would have been stranded in the middle of Kansas by yourself with no way to get help!" Joe didn't mean to yell at you, but just the thought of you being out here alone was stressing him out.
"Good thing you're here, then." You harmlessly placed a hand on his thigh to reassure him as you scrolled the internet for tow trucks. Neither of you realized that Joe had grabbed your hand in his, interlacing your fingers. As you rose your head, feeling him massaging your fingers mindlessly as he stared ahead, you felt your stomach flip. "Joe", you uttered out, waiting for him to look at you.
"Oh, sorry." He snatched his hand back, running his fingers through his blonde locks. He didn't even realize he had done it. You were his safe place, and touching you brought him comfort in a way that he really didn't understand himself. You were no stranger to his touch, but it was always in the name of getting off.
"I think I found a place a couple miles away. ETA is...2 hours." You let out a frustrated sigh. Waiting two hours for a two truck meant you weren't going to see a shower or bed anytime soon. You desperately wanted to wash this road trip off with the hottest water a hotel shower could produce.
Joe leaned his seat back, the worn leather creaking underneath him as he sunk down, crossed his arms over his chest and closed his eyes. "What are you doing?", you asked, shifting in your seat to face him.
"What does it look like?"
"You can't fall asleep. What if some monster comes and snatches me out of my window?" You were partly kidding, partly terrified that would actually happen. "That's not gonna happen", he huffed, "I'm not that lucky." You scoffed, throwing your feet over his lap. "You need to stay up and keep me company. Those are the rules of the roadtrip."
"Please. I just drove eight hours, five of which you were asleep."
"Joe, please. Just until the tow truck gets here."
"Fine. Tell me about your cousin. Were you close?", Joe hummed, scratching his nose. "Technically she's my mom's cousin, and no, I've never met her. My mom was close with her at one time, but they lost touch years ago. I'm just going to represent the family."
Joe opened an eye to peek at you. "You're going all the way to Denver for someone you've never met?"
"Why do you sound so shocked? I can do things out of the kindness of my heart." You clutched your chest dramatically, but Joe just chuckled, dropping his shoulders in a sigh. "It's just... ya know what? Nevermind."
"What? Tell me."
"Its just...are you sure that's all that it is? In all the time I've known you, you do things out of comfort. I'm not saying its a bad thing, but this isn't like you." He was looking at you know, his blue eyes illuminated by the orange hued overhead lighting. He was staring into your soul, like he was trying to pull something out of you, and you squirmed underneath the scrutiny.
Your head snapped when you saw a pair of headlights coming down the road, but it was just a passing car. "We have had sex in this car so many times, because you don't even want to come to my place most of the time." You turned back to Joe, whose eyes were closed again.
You bit at your bottom lip. You never realized anyone was paying attention to you that closely, especially not Joe. "I've been thinking a lot about the things I've settled for in my life, and this felt like a breath of fresh air, something different. I'm going a funeral, but I'm also getting out of Ohio for a minute."
Your words hit Joe like a ton of bricks. He quickly sat up. "Are you thinking about leaving Ohio?"
"Eventually", you shrugged. "You didn't think I'd be there forever did you?" you giggled, playing with the hem of your sweatshirt. "I mean, I guess, I- didn't give it much thought." Joe let in a sharp breath to stop his fumbling. He did think you'd be there forever, or at least, he always thought you'd be there as long as he was.
"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find a new fuck buddy", you said in jest, crossing your legs one over the other. Joe felt his throat go dry, his skin crawling in the silence. He was desperate to change the subject and get his mind off all of the terrible possibilities. "How much longer?"
You checked your phone. "Still got another hour. I'm starving. Did you really eat all of the snacks?" You sat up and crawled into the back of the car to search the bags you packed. "Really, Joe, even my Cheetos? Aren't you on some sort of athlete diet?" You threw the empty bag at him, the plastic hitting him in the face. "I was hungry." He tried to go to the sleep to the sound of you rummaging behind him.
"Hey, look what I found." Joe opened his eyes to see a gold-wrapped condom dangling in front of his face. "I have an idea of how we can pass the time", you whispered in his ear, making him shiver. "If you're not too tired."
"Fuck it." With a grunt, he ripped the condom out of your hands, and took it between his teeth as he unbuttoned his jeans. You frantically climbed to the front, stripping off your sweatshirt before climbing over him to straddle his legs. You turn off the overhead light, moonlight pouring over both of you through the window.
Goosebumps rose on your skin as you pulled him in for a messy kiss, your skin on fire even though seconds ago you were freezing. As you made out, his hands trailed around your waist, inching closer and closer to your spine before his large hands slid down the small of your back and grabbed rough handfuls of your ass, his fingers digging into your delicate skin as your back arched.
He began to move your hips slowly back and forth, making you grind against his pelvis, but he was going too slow for your taste, so you grabbed at his hands, circling your hips against him with an eagerness that had his hips bucking from sensitivity. You could feel him grow hard quickly against your inner thigh, letting out little moans into your mouth as your lips lingered together.
'Y/N, honey-", Joe could barely get the words out, his chest heaving with each breath. "What?", you huffed out without losing your pacing. "What's the rush?", His brow knitted together in pain as his cock rubbed against his zipper. "The tow truck is gonna be here any minute." Joe nodded, holding you in place. You backed away from him, pushing the hair that was stuck to his face with sweat out of his eyes. "We're having sex. I'd like to have use of my dick afterwards, okay?"
You giggled, pulling him by the collar of his shirt for another kiss, alternating between sucking on his top and bottom lips. You moved your hips again, this time with more control, focusing on the friction against your clit with each movement. "Better?", you questioned, only earning a moan from Joe. You could feel yourself growing wet, your panties soaked as you built your orgasm off of friction alone. Joe fumbled with the button of your shorts, sliding his hand down your front, feeling the wetness pooled against the cotton fabric.
"Shit, I didn't realize you were so ready." He toyed with the band of your panties, snapping the elastic against your skin. "Take these off." You lifted yourself off of Joe's lap, settling in the passenger seat, and shuffled your shorts and panties down your legs, kicking them into the back seat. Joe pulled you back onto his lap, eliciting a squeal from you, and in a single breath, he has you writhing on top of him again, his thumb pressing against your clit as he draws agonizingly circles around the sensitive bud.
"Fuck, fuck, don't stop." You hiss, guiding his fingers to drag through your drenched folds, humping against his hand. He slides one of his large digits inside of your pussy, feeling you clench around him, your muscles pulsing as he begins to thrust in and out of you. He slips another finger inside, and you feel the stretch, taking deep breaths as he hooks his fingers and strokes against your cushiony ceiling.
Watching your face contort with pleasure, your chest bouncing in front of him with your head thrown back has him at a loss for words, desperate to get his hands on every inch of you. He helps you get your shirt off over your head, reaching behind your back to easily unclasp the hooks of your bra with his free hand, exposing your budding nipples to the cold air.
Joe leans forward, flicking his tongue against your nipple, and ghosting wet kisses between your breasts. You move back instinctively when he nips at your skin, but he pulls you aggressively back, hungry to feel you in his mouth again. "Feels so good, baby." Expletives are rolling off your tongue as he sucks harder on your nipples. Your hands find the back of his head, your fingernails raking against his scalps as he moves down to your stomach, pressing a kiss right above your belly button as you lean against the steering wheel.
He pulls out of you, your wetness glistening on his fingers. Without hesitation, you take both of his fingers into your mouth, pressing them against your tongue. "You look so fuckin' beautiful like this", he grunts out, his mouth slightly agape as he watches you. Instead of your usual bashfulness at his dirty talk, you hold eye contact with him, your eyelids heavy with lust as you lick him clean, popping his index finger against your lips as you pull them out.
"Fuck, lift your hips." He instructs, racing against his internal clock, like he'll cum in his pants if he doesn't have you now. You do as he says, cupping your chest as he fumbles for the discarded condom, finding it in the cupholder. He unbuckles his belt and pushes his jeans and boxers down to his knees, his pink cock springing free and resting against his lower stomach. You salivate at the engorged vein that travels from the base of his cock to the tip, which is leaking pre-cum.
"Hurry up!" You playfully push him, turning to look over your shoulder for any tow trucks or stray cars, but its obvious the two of you are alone out here. He rips the foil wrapper with his teeth, and removes the condom, rolling it down his length. He wraps his hands around the base of his cock as you slowly sink down on him, taking him inch by inch until you bottom out with a loud moan. "Oh, fuck."
He pulls at the manual recline handle and goes flying back, landing against the backseat with a thud, hitting the back of his head against the headrest. "I fuckin' hate this car", he mumbles, quickly forgetting about the ancient vehicle and his injury as you begin to bounce on his dick, the sound of your ass slapping against his thighs audible, quickly drowned out by the squelching of your wetness as he slips in and out of you.
Joe can't focus on anything but how good you feel and how good you look on top of him, your silhouette illuminated in the moonlight, his hands grazing against the curve of your waist and hips. You feel your legs start to fatigue so you lean forward, resting your hands on his chest, feeling the contours of his muscles underneath your palms.
He takes the opportunity to worship your body as you ride him, placing kisses on your arms and chest while you're too blissed out to even notice. "So fuckin good, baby. You're doin' so fuckin' good", he praises you over and over, which has you hurdling toward your orgasm, feeling the coil tighten in your core.
"Joe", you whimper out, your pace slowing as you tire. "I've got you", he remarks, sliding his hands underneath your thighs to hold you up while he snaps his hips into you, making you take him to the hilt each time. He strokes your g-spot in perfect succession each time and you're sure you won't last much longer. "I'm-I'm gonna cum." You bite out, your words vibrating through your bouncing chest, your nails digging into his pecs, leaving red marks. He increases his pace, hitting against your cervix, the car squeaking and shaking side to side as you come undone, your release washing over you with waves of pleasure.
Joe's right behind you, his face scrunched tight as he feels every muscle in his body contract, "Fuck, I'm gonna cum", he warns just in time, and you pepper kisses against his jawline as his hips stutter. You try to kiss him, but he can only draw in sharp breaths as he releases into you, residual muscle pulses from your orgasm milking him for every drop.
Completely spent, he draped an arm around your back, pulling your weight down on his body. Your chests heave in succession as you come down from your high and try to catch your breath. You lazily kiss his cheek with a smile. "Fuck, that was-"
"I love you." You both were silent, the declaration hanging in the air. Joe was shocked at the words as if they didn't come out of his own mouth. You lifted your head to look at him, your hands still clamped around his face. "What did you say?"
"What?" Joe responded, in immediate denial. He tried to look away, but you turned his head back to you. You heard your phone vibrating in the passenger seat but you ignored it, unable to take your eyes off of him. His face was soft, genuine, his eyes very telling. He meant what he said.
Your phone vibrated for a second time. "Its probably the tow truck. You should get that." Joe was desperate for a reprieve. "Yeah." You shook your head and climbed off his lap, grabbing your phone to answer it. "Hello? Yes, we're around mile marker 152. Okay." You hurriedly put your clothes back on, Joe watching you through the rear view mirror the entire time. He could physically see you trying to process what had just happened, and he honestly wished he'd never said anything. He wasn't sure if he loved you, he was too lost in the moment, thinking with his dick instead of his head.
"They'll be here in five." Your words jogged Joe out of his trance. He nodded and got out of the car, desperate for air. You needed to talk about what happened, but right now, you just wanted to focus on getting your car towed and getting to the nearest hotel so you could get some sleep.
The ride in the tow truck was uncomfortably quiet. You rested your head against the window, your arms crossed over your chest to create as much distance between the two of you as possible, desperate to close your eyes even for a few minutes. Joe glanced over at you multiple times in the short five mile ride to the hotel. He raked a hand through his messy hair, moving to stroke his jawline, the guilt of catching you off guard and professing his love for you in the heat of the moment, gnawing at him.
The hotel was very basic, no amenities and didn't even a continental breakfast, and wasn't really up to Joe's standards, but it was the only one in town, so he'd settle for it just for the night. He stood in the lobby and watched you as you checked in, making light conversation with the desk attendant.
Maybe if he just denied it, or avoided talking about it, you two could move past this, and it could all be a bad memory.
He felt a lump build in his throat as you walked toward him. Seeing the distress on your face, he knew there was no way you were getting over this anytime soon. "Look, Y/N-"
Your face was stoic as you threw your bag over your shoulder. You shoved a key card in his direction without a word. "Goodnight, Joe." He watched you walk away, flipping the key card in his hand.
What the hell had he just done?

you are in love | joe burrow x reader
Tumblr media
description: how did you end up falling head over heels for the quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals? but most importantly, how did the quarterback end up falling harder for you?
a/n: this is my first fic ever so bare with me! i’m still getting the hang of writing about joe. i have tried a few times but ended up deleting them because I didn’t like how they turned out LOL. buttt I got bored and got a little confidence and decided to try again. i hope you all like it (if anyone even reads this). this is based off of one of my favorite songs ever and I thought it would make a nice fic. i hope its not too cringe, enjoy :)
warnings: slight smut and allusions to sex, language
word count: 5.5 k
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
present day:
One look, Dark Room
Meant just, For you
Time moved too fast, You play it back
“And that should do it,” Joe says as he places the final pillow onto the fort.
“Didn’t know you had “architect” in your job portfolio. This is impressive,” you giggled as you got into the fort.
“No need for the flattery babe, gotta make sure your first night here is comfy so you come back,” Joe replied while draping a blanket over your legs.
“Oh I’ll be back, someone has to use the massive pool, and knowing you, you won’t go in there without me,” you said while thinking about all the exciting things you’ll get to do with him at his new house.
“You got that right, but you’re the one who needs to hang on to me and use me as her personal flotation device,” he says as he settles on the pillows across from you.
“Well then, maybe you shouldn’t be so huggable Mr. Burrow,” you say before throwing a pillow at him.
Today was you and Joe’s 6 month anniversary. You two had spent the entire day moving Joe into his new house that he bought when he signed his extension. There were boxes everywhere and hardly any furniture set up, so Joe ended up building a blanket fort for the night. He spent every free moment apologizing for not being able to do something romantic for your anniversary, but you didn’t mind. Any moment with him was special.
“Thank you for helping me out today, I know you probably didn’t think we’d be spending most of the weekend doing this when I asked you to come to Cincinnati,” He said as he was fidgeting with his wristbands.
You lived all the way in Los Angeles and were currently in the middle of working on your 3rd studio album. You were in desperate need of a break and inspiration, so you jumped on the first flight to Cincinnati to see your favorite person.
“Joe, you've apologized enough. Seriously, it’s perfectly fine. You know that I don’t care about the fancy dates and over-the-top gestures. Any time we get to spend together means the world to me, even if it involves carefully moving your extensive Lego collection to the new house,” you chuckle while rubbing his foot.
Joe’s heart was exploding while you were talking. He seriously doesn’t understand how he got so lucky. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to him and he wanted to do everything possible to show you. But the one thing he adored most about you was that you didn’t care for all the glitz and glamor of dating an NFL quarterback. And you loved that he didn’t care about your Hollywood status or all the attention you’d get from the public.
Joe got up on his knees and crawled over to the spot next to you. Once he sat down, you immediately latched onto him and buried yourself into his neck, missing the warmth of his body.
“See, you’re so huggable,” you murmured against his neck.
You heard him softly laugh and felt his hand move up your side, squeezing your arm. “How did I get so lucky” you wondered to yourself.

first meeting:
Buttons on a coat, Light-hearted joke
No proof, not much
But you saw enough
Flashback to July 4th: The Hamptons, New York
You dreaded going to the big 4th of July bash hosted by Micheal Rubin every year, but as an up-and-coming musician, saying “No” to this kind of party would be stupid given the number of connections you could make. The party would always have the most elite Celebrities, Models, Musicians, and Athletes; meaning a lot of small talk and fake laughing. This would be your third time going, and every time you end up sitting in the corner, alone with your way too strong Vodka Martini, counting down the minutes until you could leave. But this year, something was different.
You did end up sitting in the corner with your way too-strong Martini, but you weren't alone. And you certainly weren't counting down the minutes until you could leave. Hell, you were even wishing this night would never end.
“What happens to Football Players when they become blind?” he asked.
“Hmm, I don’t know,” you replied.
“They become referees,” he said while smirking.
“Joe! You can’t say that!” you wheezed out. You couldn't contain your laughter any longer. You weren’t sure if it was because of the Martini, or the fact that Joe Burrow was sitting next to you, also drinking a Vodka Martini.
“Hey, it’s the truth, but you didn’t hear that from me,” Joe said while throwing his hands up.
“You got it Mr. QB1, but I do agree; it’s such BS when they miss the most clear calls,” you giggled.
You weren’t really sure how you and Joe ended up basically spending the entire party by each other's side. One minute you're about to sit and scroll on your phone as usual, and the next thing you know you’re telling your life story to a guy you just met. Were you a little buzzed, absolutely. But something about him made you feel comfortable and safe, even though you just met.
“You’re really cool by the way,” Joe whispered.
“Gee, aren’t you Shakespeare,” you smiled and took another sip of your drink.
“Seriously though. The entire time we've been sitting here, not once did you purposefully bring up the fact that I’m an NFL quarterback. Not many girls can talk to me without bringing up football or trying to flirt with me. It’s exhausting,” he confessed but quickly realized how cocky he sounds. “Not that every girl tries to flirt with me,” he added.
You laughed and said, “Well, lucky for you I find more value in real conversations than all that superficial stuff. I totally understand the feeling, I love talking to people about my music but after a certain point I just want to talk about normal things and have real conversation,”
I do think it’s cool that you’re a football player since I grew up watching it, but I want to know more about you, not the quarterback,” you continue.
“Well then Miss Y/N, I’m in New York for a few more days, let me take you out to dinner so you can get to know the real Joe a little more,” he boldly asked.
You stared into his deep blue eyes, eyes you wouldn’t mind getting lost in. Something about those eyes was promising. You’ve only just met him and for all you know, he could be a typical “Fuck Boy athlete” looking for a quick hookup. There was nothing to attest to what he was saying, but part of you was willing to take the risk. Something about him felt different.
“Earth to Y/N-”
“Okay,” was all you said.
Little did you know that saying yes to Joe was one of the best decisions you’ve ever made.

early dating:
Small talk, he drives
Coffee at midnight
The light reflects, The chain on your neck
He says, “Look up”, And your shoulders brush
No proof, one touch, But you felt enough
Flashback to your first time visiting Joe in Cincinnati
It had been a few weeks since you and Joe had dinner together and he had been nothing but a gentleman. The two of you talked about everything from your childhoods to your current aspirations, to your favorite music, and even geeking out about Marvel Movies plus everything nerdy. Joe made you feel good about yourself. He would always tell you how pretty you looked and paid the most attention whenever you would talk. He made you feel butterflies, something which you hadn’t felt in a long time.
After you left New York, the two of you couldn’t stop talking to each other. The silly conversations eventually turned into deep ones; you telling him things you’ve only shared with a select number of people. You felt comfortable when you were talking to him, so this wasn’t difficult for you. He shared things with you about himself that he would only share with those close to him, which was very few since he kept a tight circle. You both shared a mutual feeling of trust, willing to lay yourself bare just to get to know one another. You’d always text him after a vigorous studio sesh to vent and he would update you on his off-season progress. Those texts eventually turned into late-night facetimes, which ended up in Joe asking you to fly out and see him. You hesitated a bit before saying yes. In the back of your mind, you were scared. You knew that the more you two talked and saw one another, the more attached you’d get. He could break your heart into a thousand pieces if you weren’t careful. But you owed it to yourself and to Joe to try.
You hummed along to whatever song was playing on the radio as you looked out the window and watched the bright city skyline fade. It was currently midnight in Cincinnati and Joe insisted that he take you to his favorite secret spot on your first trip here.
“You tired?” Joe asked as he glanced over to you, taking in every one of your features.
God you looked so pretty, he thought. You were wearing one of his old Athens Football hoodies and had your hair in a messy bun. You weren’t wearing any makeup and even had on a pair of his slides, which were a few sizes too big. Even in your most natural state, he looked at you like you were a diamond.
“A little. Didn’t get a lot of sleep on the plane,” you yawned out.
“I promise this will be worth it,” Joe said as he placed his hand on your bare thigh.
You immediately tensed up at the foreign contact. Joe felt you tense up and went to remove his hand but you put it right back on your thigh and felt your face turning red. Your stomach was doing somersaults right now.
“Those damn butterflies,” you thought to yourself.
“So, how’s the album coming along?” Joe casually questioned as if he didn’t just make you want to scream out of excitement.
“It’s good, slow, but making progress. I feel like I’ve hit a dead end and am having major writer's block so I think stepping away from it for a little bit will be good for me. Things were getting a bit stuffy and loud. I feel like I was getting somewhere but it always ends up being nothing,” you say as you place your hand on top of his, playing with his fingers.
“That’s good, I hope this weekend will be a breath of fresh air for you. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Always remember that you’re doing your best,”
You looked over at Joe and felt your heart swell up. He knew exactly what to say and how to make a girl feel special.
~10 minutes later~
“We’re here,” Joe says as he turns off the car.
You looked out the window and saw nothing but trees and grass. You were confused as to where he brought you but before you could ask him, he got out of the car and jogged to your door to open it for you.
“Thank you, Joey,” you blushed as he closed the door behind you.
Joe stepped behind you and whispered into your ear “Close your eyes, I promise it’ll make it even better”.
You closed your eyes and felt his hand on the small of your back. He led you through what felt like a clearing in the trees to a flat grassy patch. You could feel the cold wind against your bare legs meaning that you were out of the woods.
“Open,” he told you.
When you opened your eyes you were met with the most beautiful sight. The same skyline you saw up close, now you were looking at from a distance. It was breathtaking. In Front of you was a picnic blanket and a beautiful set up of candles.
“Holy shit Joe, this is beautiful,” you say in awe.
“Welcome to the lookout point. My favorite place to go when I need a minute alone. I also remember you mentioning how you loved looking at skylines during the sunset and even though we couldn’t make it for the sunset part, I thought this would be the next best thing,” He says as he leads you both to the blanket.
You both sat down on the blanket and he immediately pulled you into his chest. You both faced the bright skyline and all Joe could think about was how much peace he felt at that moment. It was just the two of you sitting in your own little world. The darkness and quietness around you both felt comforting because it was a sign that this moment was just for you both;  no outside noise or distractions.
“This is insane, I mean you can see the whole city and river from up here!” You say as you settle into his arms, your back to his chest.
“That’s not even the best part Y/N, look up,” He points.
You turn your head up to look at him and then you look up. You’re met with what is probably the clearest view of the stars you’ve ever gotten.
“It’s beautiful,” you whisper, not removing your eyes from the sky.
“You’re beautiful,” Joe says while looking down at you.
You got that feeling again. Your stomach was doing somersaults and the butterflies were back. Could this be that feeling? A feeling you hadn’t felt in a while? That feeling you get when the right person enters your life at the right time? Was Joe that person? So many questions filled your head that you didn’t realize Joe had been softly caressing your thigh the entire time which pulled you out of your trance.
“That right there is the Big Dipper which points straight to-”
“Polaris,” you interrupt.
“Space nerd,” Joe shakes his head and laughs out.
“Don’t think I don’t know about your space nerdy ways Burrow, I know this is your domain,” you huff out. Joe had told you back in New York that he loved anything and everything space and physics-related. You admired how someone like him was a complete nerd under the tough shell he had. You naturally went back to your apartment and spent an hour or two updating yourself on space quick facts, which certainly paid off.
You slowly got out of his embrace and sat up across from him.
“Is something wrong?” He asked with a hint of confusion in his voice.
“No, nothing’s wrong Joe,” you chuckle.
“It’s perfect actually. It’s all perfect. You’re perfect,” you say as you move closer to him, still sitting up. “You know how to make a girl feel special, this was really sweet of you Joe,” you say as you play with the strings of his your hoodie.
“I just wanna make my girl feel special,” he confesses while moving your hair out of your face.
His girl.
Those were the only words you needed to hear before you jumped onto him and pressed your lips against his. His lips fit perfectly against yours like you were made for each other, so soft and sweet. He slipped his tongue in between the valley of your lips and entered your mouth which caused you to let out a soft whimper. You both spent a few moments exploring each other’s mouths before he broke apart the heated moment.
“I take that as a “yes I’ll be your girlfriend”,” he questioned while searching your face for an answer.
“I didn’t know you were asking,” you teased.
Joe’s face dropped, did he push you too fast? You noticed his facial expression change and immediately pressed a soft kiss onto the tip of his nose and laughed,  “Yes silly, I’ll be your girl,”.
——————————————————
it's getting serious:
Morning, his place, Burnt toast, Sunday
You keep his shirt, He keeps his word
And for once, you let go, Of your fears & your ghosts
One step, not much,  But it said enough
Flashback to Joe’s house (4 months into dating)
The warm sunlight flooded the room as you slowly woke up, your body sore and wrapped up in Joe’s sheets, and Joe himself. Joe was sound asleep, fully koala bear hugging you with his head on your chest. God, how does he look so perfect this early in the morning? His dirty blonde curls were sprawled out against your chest and his lips were curled up, almost smiling. Your eyes moved to his back, a few red scratches still visible. You made a mental note that you should probably trim down on the length of your acrylics if this was going to become a common thing for you two, smiling at the thought of what unfolded the night before. You freed your hand from under the sheets and moved it around his back, hoping to soothe any pain you caused.
The two of you had stumbled into his house late last night after a delicious dinner and wine tasting at a local winery. You two had a few too many glasses of wine and were lucky you made it home in one piece.
 Flashback to last night
“I don’t think I’ve ever had that many glasses of wine in one sitting before,” you slurred as Joe led you inside the kitchen.
“Me either, next time make sure I stop after the 3rd glass. And it’s a good thing we got someone to take us back and forth,” he said as he took off his jacket and went to get you both some water.
“Literally. If you were to drive I think we’d end up in the Ohio River,” you deadpanned.
“Haha, really funny,” Joe said as he handed you a glass of water.
“God my feet feel like they’re on fire,”. You wailed out while taking a sip of the icy cold beverage.
Joe looked over at you and saw you eyeing your feet. You were wearing a short skin-tight black dress; one of his favorites. The low cut of the dress highlighted your neck which had his favorite part of your outfit. The necklace he gave you for your 1 month anniversary. A simple pendant with the letter “J”. After he gave you that necklace, you never took it off. It became a part of you, and he noticed that.
Joe crouched down and began untying your heels.
“Joe you don’t have to do that,” you cooed while twirling your fingers through his hair.
“I don’t have to, but I want to,” he said while flashing you a smile.
He helped you step out of your heels and back onto the ground. Once he got back up he wrapped his big hands around your waist and your hands immediately found their home around his neck and into his hair again.
You inched your face a little closer to his and pressed a delicate kiss onto his soft pink lips.
“Hi,” you whisper against his lips. This time, he pressed a soft kiss on your nose.
“Hi,” he whispered back, staring into your eyes.
“Tonight was really fun. Thank you for always knowing how to get my mind off of things,” you say while staring into his baby blues.
“No need to thank me Y/N. I know how hard you work and how things can become overwhelming. I’m glad that I can get your mind off of things, even if it’s for a little bit,”
He wasn’t wrong. Things often become too much for you back in LA and coming to Joe was your escape. Being with him blocked out the outside noise, you would completely forget about whatever was bothering you. You guys would often end up doing the most random things together, without any plan, but that was okay. Those nights where you’d end up eating Chinese takeout on the floor while building a new Lego set were your favorites. The hot summer days where you both would spend the entire afternoon attached to each other in the pool was one of your favorite ways to destress, it was just the two of you. He is your shelter in the hurricane that is your life.
For Joe, it was very similar. Anytime football would get too real, he’d come straight to you. You were always there whenever he needed to vent or talk something out, knowing you’d always listen. You had been to every single one of his games so far and were always waiting for him in the suite after. Whether he was upset after a shitty game or on Cloud 9, you were always there waiting with open arms. And he loved it. He loved being able to share his high moments with you, even if you had to see some of his lows. Your relationship hadn’t become public yet, which you two were incredibly grateful for. You both were incredibly private people and wanted to take in as much as you could before the whole world had an opinion of your romance. Getting to know each other in private, away from prying eyes, was a blessing.
The two of you continued to stare into each other's eyes, you found yourself once again getting lost in his.
You felt Joe’s hand migrate to your ass, giving it a soft squeeze.“Getting handsy now aren’t we, Burrow,” you softly giggled.
“Can’t help it if my girl looks so goddamn beautiful in this dress,” he said matter-of-factly.
“I appreciate the flattery Mr. Burrow, but do you need something from me or are you just being a flirt” you teased.
“I need you,” he blurted out.
Your heart almost beat out of your chest when you heard him say that. You and Joe haven’t taken that step in your relationship. You’ve had your fair share of heated make-outs that occasionally involve wandering hands, but nothing like that has happened, yet. It’s not that you didn’t want to, god you wanted to. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t want to climb him like a tree. His perfectly sculpted chest, his muscular arms, those thighs, and that face. He made you weak in the knees, and he was well aware. He never pressured you to go there, letting you know that it’s okay to take things slow. But tonight you didn’t feel like taking it slow.
“Then show me, Joe,” you said as you felt your arousal shoot up.
Joe immediately picked you up, bridal style, causing you to let out a shriek. Your arms wrapped around his neck as he launched you both up the stairs, taking the steps 2 at a time, eventually rushing into the bedroom.
“Joe, slow down!” You squeak out while laughing.
He carefully laid you on his bed admiring you for a second; you looked perfect, even with messy hair and smudged makeup. Joe moved onto the bed and started placing soft butterfly kisses up your arm, right up to that spot on your neck that he knows you love.
“Joe, please,” You whimpered, fully implying you wanted more with the tone of your voice.
Joe removed himself from your neck, looked into your eyes, and said “Are you sure?”.
You smiled and said “Absolutely,”.
He then captured your lips in a passionate and deep kiss. You felt like kissing him till your lips fell off, it was like heaven when you two would connect. Slowly, both of your clothes ended up on the floor and those passion-filled kisses turned messy and sloppy. You felt those butterflies in your stomach again as he was kissing his way down your body. You did not doubt that Joe would be careful with you, and you knew he wanted this just as much as you did.
End of Flashback
You decided to go back to sleep since it was still pretty early and you know Joe was tired from last night. You woke up a few hours later to the smell of cinnamon and coffee.
“Mmmm,” You say as you stretch out. You didn’t feel any weight on you anymore so Joe must have woken up. You looked around the room and didn’t see him anywhere so you decided to freshen up in his bathroom and head downstairs. When you entered the bathroom you saw one of his shirts (a purple long sleeve LSU shirt aka one of your favs) on the counter with a sticky note saying “For you :)”. You put on the soft shirt (which was way too big) and start fixing your messy hair before heading downstairs.
You walk into the kitchen and see the dining table decked out with a vase of pink carnations (which happens to be your favorite flower), 2 plates of French toast, and a smoothie for Joe. You also noticed a mug of coffee which made you smile. Joe knew that you would be a zombie the whole day if you didn’t have your daily morning coffee.  Joe was too busy cooking the bacon to notice you coming downstairs, so you walked up behind him and wrapped your hands around him from behind.
“Good morning sexy chef,” you murmured against his back.
“Tryna get me going again?” He teased.
“You wish, last night was a damn workout. I need at least 3 hours to recover before we go at it again,” you giggled.
You heard his soft laugh before he spun around and wrapped his hands around your waist. “Well, we will def be repeating that. “Sooner the better,” he added.
“Horndog,” you said as you pressed a kiss on his cheek.
“Only for you babe,” he says before going back to the bacon. “I’m almost done with this, you can sit at the table.”
“Damn, quarterback, perfect boyfriend, and chef? Impressive job portfolio,” you say while walking to the table and sitting down.
Joe finished cooking the bacon and sat down across from you. “The French toast is a little burnt, I got distracted by the TV,” he admitted. “They were showing this month’s Top 10 funniest cat videos.”
You burst out laughing and say “Guess I should add Cat Lady to your job portfolio too,”
You two spent the morning digging into the delicious breakfast Joe had prepared, even though the French toast was slightly burnt. He talked about the upcoming football season and how excited he was for the new offensive schemes they had come up with. After breakfast, you both ended up on the couch and decided to play a round of go fish. You gave him some album updates, which he’d constantly ask for, and even played one of your demos for him.
“Y/N this is amazing,” he said softly. The song he had just heard was called “Sweet Nothing”, and you weren't planning on ever letting anyone hear it because of how intimate and special it was. A big part of what you did involved you being in the public eye a lot, which allowed everyone to nitpick and talk about your life. It was exhausting how often people would comment on your relationships, friendships, career, body, and everything in between. They always expected you to be perfect in every aspect and when you weren’t, they would make it known. You had written about how Joe never expected anything from you like everyone else did. Being with him was easy and you knew you could always go to him whenever the background noise would get too loud. And now here he was, listening to those feelings you had a hard time saying out loud.
“Thank you. To be honest I wasn’t planning on letting anyone hear that,” you say while looking down and fidgeting with your rings.
“Really?” he asked. “It’s really good, and I’m not just saying that because I’m your boyfriend.”
“Yep. I love it, I really do. I think it’s one of the best songs I’ve written so far, but I feel like it’s too bare and the fans won’t understand the real meaning behind the song. And I feel like they won’t like it.”
“And that’s exactly why you should release it. I know the real you, and that is the real you,” he says while pointing at your phone. Screw the fans, you should do what makes you happy.” he says before reaching for your hand, giving it a tight squeeze. “You make music because that makes you happy and you shouldn’t have to worry about what people will say. If they have an issue with you doing what you want, then they are sure as hell not fans.”
You got up on your knees and jumped onto Joe’s body, making you both lay flat against each other on the couch.
“How do you always know what to say,” you beam while prepping soft kisses all over his face.
Your heart felt like it was about to explode. It only took a few months for someone you just met to understand you more than people following your journey over the past few years. Joe’s words felt like a warm comforting hug, and they always made you feel like everything was going to be okay. You valued his words so much, you trusted him so much, and he loved that you were so open and vulnerable with him. He knew that opening up was difficult for you, and he felt at peace knowing you felt comfortable confiding in him. You weren't holding back anymore. You were 100% open and honest with him and he never took advantage of it. Your fears of getting hurt were fading away.
——————————————————
present day:
You kiss on sidewalks, You fight and you talk
One night he wakes, Strange look on his face,
Pauses, then says, “You’re my Best Friend”
And you knew what it was, He is in Love
“Y/N?” was all you heard as you felt your shoulder shake. “Did I lose you there?” Joe asked.
“What?” you questioned as you looked up at him. You were back in the fort Joe built for you two.
“I was asking what you thought of the house,” he says as he plays with your hair. “Is something wrong?” he asks.
“Oh. Sorry, I must have dozed off for a second,” you lied, not admitting you were caught in a series of flashbacks. “I think it’s amazing. It’s sooo big and has so much potential.” you continue.
“Yeah, it is pretty big,” he says with a sigh. You look up at him and immediately sense the change in his tone plus the dejected look on his face, “Is that not what you wanted?” you say with concern. “I thought you wanted a big house.”
“I did, I do. I just don’t want to be alone in this big of a house when you aren’t here,” he confessed, feeling slightly embarrassed as if he didn’t have other things to occupy his free time. “Unless,” he added.
“Unless what?” you asked.
He hesitated before saying, “Move in with me”.
It took a few moments for your brain to register what he said to you. You immediately sat up, as did he. You were about to say something but he cut you off before you could.
“Y/N. These past 6 months have been nothing short of peaceful and amazing. Being with you brings me the balance I need in my life. I know that if I ever fly too high or get lost, I have someone who can find me and bring me back down. You are everything I’ve ever wanted in life, and now you’re everything I need.” he says.
“You’re my biggest cheerleader, my support system, my safety net, but most importantly.” He pauses and says, "You're my best friend.” “And I love you.” he finishes.
Those 3 words. The 3 words that you’ve wanted to say to him for months but didn’t because you weren’t entirely sure if he felt the same way. Those 3 words just came out of his mouth, and he meant it. He loved you more than anything and he needed to make it known. He needed to wake up to your smile every morning. He needed to hear your voice echo through the halls of the house. You made him feel loved, and he needed you to know that.
You didn’t realize the hot tears streaming down your cheeks until Joe lifted his hand and started wiping them.
“Y/N, are you okay?” he asks, feeling nervous since you didn’t respond to anything he just said.
You started crying even harder. He loved you. He really loved you.
“Y/N you’re scaring me”.
“Shut up,” you said before you put your hands on his face and brought him in for a passionate kiss.
You kissed him for a few heartbeats and finally whispered against his lips “I love you,” loud enough for just him to hear before you captured his lips in another kiss.
He stops kissing you and stares into your eyes for a moment, getting lost in them like you do with his eyes. “So about my first question,” he beams.
“Yes silly, I’ll move in with you,” you giggle. “Someone has to make sure that you don’t burn this place down while making french toast. You got lucky last time,” you laugh out while remembering that morning.
“Haha, really funny babe,” he says before pulling you into a hug. The warmth of your bodies pressed together was the most comforting feeling in the world. Joe spent the rest of the night telling you how much he loved you, and you reciprocated the feeling by showing him how much you loved him.
We’re in love.

"He's Mine" - R.G.
pairing: rick grimes x f!reader
summary: s4 ep16. Joe's group finds you in the woods. reader is the one targeted instead of Carl
warnings: cursing, angst, mentions of sexual assault, blood, gore
a/n: this scene is my Roman Empire
Tumblr media
You were tired, exhausted from the day's journey. It's been three days since the attack at the prison. Three days since you've seen most of your family. You were lucky enough to have found Rick and Carl after everything went down, even luckier when Michonne came knocking on the front door of the house you were hiding out in.
It was nighttime now, you sat in the front seat of a rundown truck while Carl laid down in the backseat. It was unlikely that you'd get much sleep being so vulnerable in the open right now but Rick and Michonne insisted that you get some rest.
Your eyes stayed on the pair as they sat on a log off the side of the road. Every so often Rick would look into the truck, his eyes locking on yours before he returned back to his conversation with Michonne.
Things with Rick has always been a bit confusing for the both of you. It was clear from the moment you met that there was something there between you. Of course, nothing ever came out of it. He was married and desperately trying to fix the brokenness in his family.
Now that Lori has passed, it's been even weirder. Neither one of you wanted to make the first move and burst the safety bubble you were in, in terms of friendship. Nonetheless, you both knew you cared for one another deeply.
Your eyes dart to the woods when you see movement. Your heart drops as you see a few men creeping in the trees, eyes directly on Rick and Michonne. You knew what was about to happen. You weighed your options. You could scream and warn them, but you had no idea how many of them there were, nor do you know their intentions.
You guys are incredibly unarmed, nothing good would come out of this.
"Carl." You mumble quietly, trying not to make it obvious that you weren't alone in the truck. You have no idea how many of them are our there, no idea how many people were looking at you right now.
Carl stirred and grumbled slightly at your call, you shush him immediately.
"Carl, I need you to very slowly and quietly lay down on the floor of the truck. Keep the blanket over you completely." You mumble. "There are people surrounding us. I need you to hide until me or your dad tell you to come out. Do you understand me?" Your heart raced as you saw the men creep out from the treeline.
Carl quietly did what you said. "Y/N? What's happening?" He was scared. Carl tries his best to keep up with his dad and be a man, but he's still just a boy. It's a scary world now.
"Everything will be okay. Stay hidden, no matter what you hear, okay? Promise me." Your breathe hitched.
"I promise."
That was the last thing he said before one of the men shoved his gun against Rick's temple. You jumped in your seat as another man smacked on the window next to you. You tried your best to avoid glancing back at Carl.
The man grinned at you through the mirror, the creepiest grin you've ever seen. You couldn't hear what the other men were saying to Rick, but eventually a few more men came into view.
The creep tapped on the window, licking his lips as he stared.
Daryl strolled up to the group, it looked like they knew each other?
"Joe!" Daryl yelled, giving a name to the mystery man. You could tell he was trying to talk down the man that held a gun to Rick's head. It looked like whatever Daryl was saying was working, the man still held his gun against Rick but it looked like he was thinking about what Daryl was saying. All hope and relief you felt when your eyes met his vanished when two men grabbed Daryl, punching and kicking him.
Your heart drops as the other man throws Michonne to the ground. The door of the truck swings open and you pray that Carl is brave enough to be silent.
The man grabs you roughly, pulling you out of the truck before patting you down and throwing your pocket knife a few feet away. You fought to wiggle out of his grip but he pushed you against the ground faster than you could blink.
"Shhh.." He says into your ear. "We're gonna have some fun, sweets."
"Leave her be!" You could hear Rick yell over all the commotion. The grunts of Daryl filled your ears as he got punched and kicked only a few feet away from you.
The man on top of you was chuckling as you tried to fight him off, clawing at him and squirming to get out from underneath him.
"Listen, it was me. It was just me." Rick grumbles to Joe.
"See, now that's right. That's not some damn lie." Joe chuckles. "Look, we can settle this. We're reasonable men."
"Get off of me you sick bastard!" You shout, spitting at the man. His hands found it's way to your chest and you screamed as he touched you.
"First, we're going to beat Daryl to death. Then the girl. Then when Dan finishes having his fun with that one over there, we'll all have a turn." The smugness in his voice was deafening.
"Then I'm going to shoot you and then we'll be square." Laughter leaves Joe's body.
"Let her go." Rick says again, as your being turned onto your stomach.
You wanted to cry as Dan pressed your face into the dirt. The pain was forgotten as the sound of his belt buckle clanking rang through your ears.
"This is going to be a whole lot worse for you if you don't stop fighting." Dan grunts into your ear, pressing against your butt. Sobs begin to leave your mouth as reality of what was about to happen sets in.
There was no hope.
The man tugs at your jeans, trying to pull them down.
A gun fires. Everyone seems to pause for a moment. Dan stops for a moment and you take the opportunity to look up, praying that none of you were hit by the bullet.
You see Rick take a swing at Joe before Joe hits him right back, knocking him to the ground. Dan immediately goes back to what he was doing, trying to rip your clothes off of you. You reach for you pocket knife that was just out of reach.
Your cries filled at air when Dan pins you down once again.
"What the hell are you gonna do now, sport?"
Then a squelching sound fills the air before a body thuds to the ground. This time everyone freezes in surprise. You look back at Rick to see him completely covered in blood from his nose to his chest. He spits out blood and skin and your eyes fall onto Joe's limp body on the ground, blood gushing out of his throat.
Fuck.
Michonne doesn't waste a beat as she grabs a gun and shoots the guy holding her before taking out the ones that held Daryl.
Dan is on his feet in seconds once he realizes he's the only one left. He pulls you up, pressing against you as he holds a knife to your throat.
"I'll kill her. I'll- I'll kill her!" He shouts as Michonne points the gun at him.
"Let her go!" She demands.
Rick pulls a knife out of Joe, standing up and balancing himself. His eyes lock onto Dan, it was almost like he had tunnel vision. He pants.
"He's mine."
Rick takes a few strides towards you and you feel Dan's grip on you loosen as he's consumed with fear. He pushes you forward, staring to beg Rick for mercy.
Daryl catches you from hitting the ground as you watch Rick stab Dan over and over again. Michonne stands by you, trying to block your view of the slaughter.
"Carl." You whisper, realizing that he was still tucked inside the truck. "C-carl." You wiggle out of Daryl's grip, running to the truck and swinging the back door open.
You could see Carl's figure shaking underneath the blanket. "Carl." You say again. "Come on out, it's okay." You whisper. Slowly he peaks his head out, once his eyes meet yours, his body instantly relaxes and he's pushing himself off the ground and throwing himself into your arms.
You, Carl and Michonne stayed in the truck for the rest of the night while Daryl and Rick stayed outside. Nobody talked. Rick looked to be in his head.
Carl laid on across the back seat, his head resting on my lap. You tried to lull him to sleep but it was clear that nobody would be getting a blink of sleep after what just played out.
When the sun started to rise you asked Michonne to take your place, not wanting Carl to be alone. Daryl had gone out to scout the area.
You poured some water onto a clothe and sat down in front of Rick, settled between his legs but leaving enough space to make it appropriate.
His eyes flickered to yours as you wiped the blood off his face.
“Should’ve saved the water.” His voice was hoarse. You shook your head, trying your best to clean him.
“He shouldn’t see you like this.” You say calmly, wiping his hands clean once his face and neck were clean. Rick watched you intently.
“Are you okay?” His voice softens as he asks. You clear your throat, flashbacks of last night playing through your head. Ricks clean hand reaches up and his thumb rubs your cheek softly.
You were able to catch sight of your face in the car mirrors. Red scuff marks littered your face where you were pressed into the ground.
“I’m okay, it’s not that bad.” You shrug. Rick stared into your eyes, his hands still holding your face.
“Are you okay?” He asks again, really holding your gaze. Your chest tightens and you know you won’t be able to fight the tears.
Rick let’s go of your face but pulls your body into his immediately. You let the tears fall as he held you. “I’m so sorry.” He whispered in your ear. “I will never let anything happen to you. Ever.” He kept apologizing, his voice cracking every so often.
“You’re safe.” He says. “You’re safe with me.”
And you knew that he was telling the truth.

Summary: The gender reveal of your second pregnancy, and third baby, has to top the first reveal. You and Joe decide you want to incorporate the team again just like you did with the twins’ and even go on to decide to do it during a game… but still keep it secretive to the outside world.
Warnings: fluff, pregnancy
Pairing: Joe Burrow x reader
Imagine universe: Into The Mystic
————————————————————————-
*18 weeks pregnant*
Another day at Paycor Stadium, except today wasn't just any day… today Joe and I would be finding out the gender of our third baby.
The twins’ gender reveal had been a hot topic on the internet after the story was told, and Joe and I both knew we'd have to step it up even more.
I can honestly say that I planned pretty much everything by myself last time, but this time around Joe had been bouncing ideas off of me constantly.
The team was going to be the stars of the show once again. It made sense because of how present they were in Joe and me’s lives, the boy's lives, and the pregnancy of the unborn baby still inside my womb.
I sat in the box with Robin on my right, Miles on her lap, and Tyson on my left.
Both of us were waiting patiently for the guys to run out and the outcome of the coin toss since it would be telling us how much longer we would have to wait for Joe and his offense to be on the field.
We would be on offense when the reveal of our baby's gender would happen.
This was how it was going to go down.
On our offense’s opening drive, Joe would ideally try to get the ball to one of his guys, ending in a touchdown.
The entire offense would go to the end zone, minus Joe of course, and either flex their arms for a boy or do a ballerina spin for a girl.
At first, Joe loved the idea but hated the flexing vs spinning because he found it subjective and kinda sexist.
He couldn't come up with any alternatives so Joe reluctantly agreed to the original idea.
Before the game, Coach Taylor kicked Joe out of the locker room and told the offense the gender of the baby.
Now that the guys knew what they were doing, all we needed was a touchdown.
Both Robin and I had spent the last 10 minutes trying to explain everything to Tyson and Miles in the best possible way you can to two two-year-olds.
Even though they still couldn't understand, their attention was immediately lost when “Dada” ran out onto the field.
I will never get tired of seeing them getting so excited watching their father do what he loves.
Miles had squirmed off of his grandma’s lap and was standing at the railing by his twin as they jumped up and down, cheering for their favorite person.
The moment was so blissful and sweet that I almost couldn't hear Robin talking to me.
“So, have you gotten sick yet? I know you had really bad morning sickness with the twins so I wanted to see if there was a difference.” - Robin
My hand dropped to the small bump that was just now starting to show through my shirt.
“No sickness which is insane. Joe thinks it's a girl because of that.” - you smiled
“I think it is too.” - Robin grinned
I stood up and walked down to the railing to coral the boys back to their seats, thankfully they chose not to fight back.
——
When Joe and his guys took the field, both Robin and I were high on excitement. She took one of my hands and squeezed it tight.
I could tell that Joe was trying to get down to the end zone quicker than normal.
Because of that, it wasn't long till they were within the 25-yard line.
Robin and I were practically bubbling with a mix of nerves and pure ecstasy.
Jimmy stood up at the top of the box talking to a few other people while still paying attention to the field in hopes of finding out what his next grandbaby would be.
The offense didn't keep us waiting too long for a touchdown. My heart was beating so fast as Tee caught the pass and waved the rest of the guys into the end zone.
Joe stood a few feet away, his heart beating just as fast, and he looked up at you and his boys waiting patiently for the results.
He so wished he was with you, but he knew he'd try to get you down to him during halftime to celebrate.
The O-line, receivers, and the rest of the guys started doing a ballerina spin.
“It’s a girl!” - Robin yelled and hugged you
My eyes welled up with tears as I watched Joe jump up in down out of pure excitement. He was finally going to be the girl dad he's always wanted to be.
“Joe looks so happy.” - Jimmy
“He wanted a girl so bad.” - you cried
“Congratulations sweetie, I'm so happy for you guys.” - Robin
Jimmy handed me a tissue knowing I would be mad AF if my makeup ran.
Tyson and Miles both stared at me confused, before looking at each other to confirm they were seeing the same thing.
“Mama?” - Miles
“You wokay?” - Tyson
“I’m perfect, guys. I'm really happy actually because Mommy has a baby girl in her belly. That's why Daddy’s friends did that little dance after Uncle Tee got the touchdown.” - you
“Baby Girl?” - Tyson
“Yup. You guys are going to have a baby sister in a few months.” - you
Miles and Tyson smiled widely and moved forward to my bump. They laid their little heads on it to be closer to their sister.
“Is it Daddy’s bwaby… too?” - Miles
Robin and I busted out laughing before I composed myself enough to answer him.
“Yes, it's your daddy’s baby too.” - you
My eyes shifted down to the sidelines where Joe was still celebrating with a wide smile on his face. Everyone was hugging him and patting him on the back.
I didn't think my heart could warm any more than it already had, but when I realized Joe was crying and continuously wiping his eyes I thought my heart was going to explode.
“Dada’s cryin’!” - Tyson
“It’s because he's happy, baby.” - you
Ty scooted closer to me and laid his head on my shoulder.
“Are you happy for a baby sister?” - you
“Mhm. We can match!” - Tyson
“You wanna match with sissy? Like you do with Miles?” - you
“Yes!” - Tyson
——
As soon as it hit halftime, a security guard escorted me and the boys down to the locker room after Joe texted me saying Zac gave him the okay to talk to me for a second.
Both of my hands were occupied with holding a twin’s hand in mine as we walked down the hallway.
We rounded the corner and my pase quickened when I saw that familiar tall frame leaning up against the wall.
Once we were within a foot of him I let go of the twin’s hands and ran up to Joe, who had his arms wide open for me.
“Baby, I can't believe we're having a girl.” - Joe wrapped his arms around you
“Me either. I'm so excited.” - you
“I am too. I get to be a girl dad.” - Joe
“Yes, you do, baby. I can't wait to pick out a name for her and start brainstorming nursery ideas with you.” - you
“I’m going to spoil the living daylights out of her… and you too, mama.” - Joe
I laughed as I pulled away, thinking of a response in the meantime.
“I’m sure you will, babe.” - you laughed
Tyson and Miles walked out from behind me and Joe squatted down to hug his boys, though Tyson complained that Joe’s shoulder pads made the hug “uncwumfy”.
Once they were done hugging their dad, Joe stood back up and placed a kiss on my cheek. He placed a big hand on the center of my small bump and grinned at me.
“I don't want to keep you from the team too long, I'll see you later.” - you
“One, my family is way more important than football, and two you better be seeing me later because I'm your ride home.” - Joe
“You're a dork, Joe. I love you though.” - you
Joe leaned down to kiss me, faint sounds of the team inside the locker room getting hyped, and the twins gagging watching their parents kiss could be heard, but the only thing that I could pay attention to was my husband's soft lips.
“I love you too.” - Joe pecked your forehead when he pulled away
I watched him turn in the direction of the door and I took this as an opportunity to smack him on the butt since the twins were occupied looking at the artwork on the walls.
“Go win this game, Tiger.” - you winked
Joe chuckled loudly and rolled his eyes before stepping into the locker room. My smile never left my face as I watched him walk over to Zac, who is a proud girl dad himself, patted him on the back.
——
Walking back to the box with my boys had my heart flourishing like never before. They continuously asked questions about their baby sister and for once it felt like nothing could ruin my mood, not even the fact I was going to have smile lines by 40.

“Soo.” Elijah trailed off as he and Kiyana were driving to the restaurant. “That was your ex-husband huh?”
“Yeah.” She said “I’m so sorry about that..” She apologized again. “He wasn’t supposed to be there.” she paused. “Him or his cousin.”  Elijah laughed.
“It’s no big deal. Trust me. I’ve dealt with worse from my ex-wife. Her brothers are still on my ass to this day.” He chuckled again.
“Oh you were married?” Kiyana asked, perplexed because he never mentioned it.
“Is that a problem?” Now Elijah was confused. Not even 10 minutes ago, he thought he was about to have a melee with her ex husband and his cousin. He cut his eyes over to her before looking back at the road when she didn’t answer. “Ki?”
“No, it’s not a problem.” She shrugged. “I just thought you would mention it by now.” She paused, and turned her head to look at him. “It’s not a big deal though.”
“You sure?” Elijah asked as he pulled up to a red light, now turning his full attention to her. “I don’t wanna start us off on the wrong foot.”
“Ohh, there’s an us?” She teased with a smile, feeling her cheeks heat up.
“Theres definitely an us. I normally have a rule that I don’t date coworkers but, it’s just something about you Kiyana.” There goes them butterflies again. She thought as their faces inched closer. He cupped her jaw and Kiyana felt her heart rate spike. Just as their lips were about to connect, the car behind them honked causing the both of them to jump away from each other.
Tumblr media
“Fuck!” Josh cursed as he watched Kiyana get into Elijah’s car and drive off. This was exactly what he was afraid of. He stomped past Joe and into his former home. “Samara!” He called out, softly though, still mindful of his sleeping children.  “Mara?!” He called out again, rolling his eyes as she strolled out of the kitchen munching on his children’s Doritos.
“What?”
“What restaurant did they go to?” He huffed when she shrugged and pushed past him to sit on the couch. “Samara ,please.” Josh begged. “I know I fucked up by doin' what I did. But shit, I can’t just give up and go let her fall in love with someone else. I won’t be able to take it. So please, just tell me what restaurant they went to.”
Samara felt her hatred for Josh slip away. While they were never close she still considered him a friend and one thing about Samara was that she hated seeing her friends hurting. “Fine.” She sighed out. “But you have to answer my question first.”  Josh nodded immediately.
“Aight, whatever you wanna know.”
“Why did you do it? What made you cheat on Kiyana?”  oh Josh gulped.  “Josh?”
“I don’t know. “ He said and Samara sucked her teeth. “I- we were arguing about her not listening to the doctor about not stressing. I just wanted her and Kairo to be okay.” He walked over and sat down on the couch next to her and put his head in his hands.  “You know the same thing happened when she was pregnant with Kehlani.” Neither one of them heard Joe as she entered the house and stood right by the entrance to the living room, listening to their conversation. “Her auntie died and..” He blew out a breath. “She wouldn’t relax, she wouldn’t just stop and not stress. I already have one dead kid. I didn’t want another.”
Samara nodded, remembering how Kiyana blamed herself for years for the death of Kehlani. “So that’s why you cheated?” Josh scoffed and shook his head.
“Hell no. I just- I wanted to vent. Everyone around me kept talking about how Kiyana felt and..” He paused and sniffled, wiping his eyes. “I- it’s selfish but damn, Kenneth was like a dad to me too. When Kish and my mom were going through it Ken and Ms Imani welcomed me with open arms. I just wanted to vent to someone who wouldn’t say oh well it’s Kiyana’s dad. And Shanté was there at the right  time. It wasn’t my intention to start the affair, I just wanted someone to talk to and things went too far.”
Joe let out a sigh and closed his eyes. He couldn’t intervene with Josh and Kiyana nomore. He had already done enough damage by sleeping with Kiyana and truth be told, Josh was his favorite cousin and even if Joe thought that Kiyana should be with him, he didn’t want to hurt his cousin more than he already did.
“The Grand Marlin.” Samara said after a minute of silence between her and Josh. “He took her to The Grand Marlin.”
Josh pulled Samara in for a hug and thanked her. “Do not fuck this up again Joshua. I swear on my life I will make sure she fucks every single one of your family members.” Josh sucked his teeth and pushed her away from him.
“Damn Samara.” She shrugged and pointed towards the front door.
“Go, before she falls in love with him or something.”  Josh nodded and rushed towards the front door, only to be stopped by Joe blocking it.
“Uce come-on. Don’t do this to me right now. You proved your point already.”  Joe shook his head and put his hands up defensively.
“I just wanted to apologize to you Josh. You my family and I should have never took it there with your wife.” Josh sucked his teeth.
“You don’t mean that shit. What you want me to go get my wife back so you can fuck her again.” Josh felt the urge to pummel Joe so he took a deep breath. “ Getcho’ big ass out my way Joseph.”
“Josh, this is the most serious I've been with you in years. I’m sorry.” Josh narrowed his eyes at Joe. Not believing him in the slightest. But he couldn’t worry about Joe right now, right now he needed to get to Kiyana.
Tumblr media
“Thank you for bringing me here.” Kiyana smiled over at Elijah as he pulled out her chair for her. “I’ve never been here before.”
“No problem Ms. Jackson. I plan to give you a lot of first time experiences” He winked back as the waiter came over and asked for their drink orders.
Elijah kept a smile on Kiyana’s face all throughout dinner. And if Kiyana was being honest, this was the best date she had been on in years.
Her weekly ‘dates’ with Josh were just them going out to dinner, nothing special or spectacular. He stopped making her feel special a long time ago and she had just gone with the flow because she loved him.
“Hey that’s your ex-husband right?” Elijah’s voice broke her out of her thoughts and she turned her head in the direction he was pointing to see Josh arguing with the maitre’d and pointing in her direction.
“Oh my god.” She muttered, covering her face with her hands. “This is so embarrassing. Just give me two minutes please.” She said, biting her lip as she stood from the table and walked over to where Josh was making an ass out of himself.
“All you had to do was let me through dickhead.” He sneered at the man, who was only trying to do his job.
“Joshua.” Kiyana hissed, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt and dragging him outside of the restaurant. “What are you doing?!”
“Tryna stop you from making a mistake. I’m so fucking sorry Key.” He whispered, cupping her face in his hands.  “About everything. About Shanté.” He swallowed hard when he saw her flinch at Shanté’s name. “About not sticking up for you at J’s party. About everything.” He repeated and Kiyana started shaking her head.
“No.” She laughed as tears started to well up in her eyes. “You can’t just come here and ruin my date. You have no right Joshua.” She pushed him away from her. “You cheated on me, there is no apologizing for that, not after the shit I put up with from you and your family for years.”
“Kiyana please - “
“Go home Joshua.” She muttered, blinking her tears away. She was done crying over him. “I’m trying to move on, you need to do the same.” Josh felt as if Kiyana just reached into his chest and pulled his heart out, as she gave him one last look before turning and walking back into the restaurant to continue her date. Leaving him heartbroken and empty.

—————
The last thing you wanted while starting to plan your wedding was to have a mental breakdown in front of everyone.
And by everyone, you mean everyone. Trevor, Jack, Quinn, Luke, Cole, Alex, and your essentially adoptive parents Ellen and Jim.
You had your music on shuffle as you started looking at color schemes and flower arrangements. It was great at first— the speaker played Taylor, early 2000s pop music, Morgan Wallen and other country songs, 5SOS, and even some One Direction.
And then Little Bird by The Jonas Brothers came on.
You barely noticed it at first, treating it more like background music. Until the chorus. And the second verse. And the rest of the song.
'Cause I know if I'm doin' my job correct
Nights like these will happen less
So please just keep me in your heart
When you fly into somebody else's arms, little bird
Yeah, yeah
Walked down the aisle, breakin' my heart
Lay down my pride, I know I gotta let you go
'Cause he's gonna love you when I gotta leave you
Gotta believe it when the Lord takes me home
You got a little emotional at the chorus and decided to push past it. It was just a song. But when Joe started singing about a father walking his daughter down the aisle, you lost it.
Trevor was quick to jump out of his seat and wrap his arms around you. He was standing while you were still sitting, cradling your head into his chest and rubbing your back.
“Turn it off,” Trevor said softly, but urgently, to Jack.
Jack ushered to the speaker and unplugged it, ceasing the music in the middle of the next chorus. Trevor and Quinn shared a panicked look. Everyone was dead silent and still, no one knew what to do. The lyrics that got to you were wedding and father related. The whole song is about a father’s love for his daughter, something that your biological father didn’t have for you.
“I won’t be offended if you need Quinn, sweet girl,” Trevor whispered to you. “Just nod your head if it’s him you need.”
“B-both,” you choked out.
That took your fiancé off guard. He wasn’t sure if there was ever a moment where you needed both of the two most important people to you during a breakdown.
“Let’s go upstairs,” Quinn said.
Trevor slowly released his hold and held out both of his hands for you to take. He pulled you up and threw one arm around your shoulder and used his other to place a comforting hand on your upper arm.
You bit back your sobs as you left the kitchen to go upstairs into your and Trevor’s room in the lake house. The second the door closed behind you, you threw yourself into Quinn’s arms, who was sitting on the edge of the bed.
Quinn wrapped you up tight, and Trevor sat down close to you and Quinn and returned to rubbing your back in soothing circles.
“It’s alright, Sissy,” Quinn cooed. “We got you. You’re safe. Let it all out.”
You violently sobbed into your best friend’s chest. Your entire body was shaking; there was no way that the rest of your loved ones downstairs couldn’t hear you.
“Why didn’t he want me?!” you shouted through your cries. Then, softer, “Why didn’t he love me?”
“He didn’t deserve you,” Quinn answered low.
“He still doesn’t deserve you,” Trevor elaborated on Quinn’s words.
You continued to bawl. You sobbed so hard that your head was starting to pound. You sobbed so loud that your throat was burning. The boys stayed mostly quiet, only occasionally offering assuring whispers of “it’s alright,” and “let it out” variations.
Your sobs, over half an hour later, eventually died down into a silent cry with only sniffles as a tell.
“He doesn’t deserve me,” you said weakly.
“That’s right, Quinn agreed. “You decide who deserves you. And I think five year old you made the decision that your biological parents don’t the first time they forgot to pick you up from our house.”
“I always liked it better there.”
Quinn kisses the top of your head, “We liked it better when you were there. We worried when you weren’t.”
At some point during your breakdown, you had laid down in Quinn’s lap. You slowly sat up and turned slightly to dive into Trevor’s chest. You wrapped your arms around his waist and he pulled your legs over so that you were sitting between his legs, turning you towards Quinn so that you could see him and he could still place his hand on you. Trevor put his arms around you and started to stroke your hair while his cheek rested on top of your head.
“You deserve me,” Trevor whispered. “You deserve everything and I plan to give it to you.”
“You already have,” you told him, hugging him tighter.
“Then I’ll give you everything and more. And I’ll tell you every day that you deserve me. And Quinn. And Jack. And Luke, Cole, Alex, Jamie, Ellen, Jim, all our teammates, and every single hockey player that you’ve deemed your son.”
Trevor’s words brought more cries from you, but in a good way this time. Quinn lifted your legs and scooted closer to Trevor so that he could lay your legs across his lap. You kept one arm tightly around Trevor, but you held your other hand out for Quinn to hold.
Quinn grabbed it and squeezed it gently, “I’ve never met anyone more loved than you.”
“You’d probably explode with any more love,” Trevor quipped. He smiled when he got a small chuckle out of you. He always knew when it was okay to lightly joke to help get you feeling better. You love that about him.
“Quinn?”
“Yeah, Sissy?”
“I know I originally asked you to walk me down the aisle, but would you be offended if I asked Jim to?”
Quinn broke out into a smile at your question.
“Not at all. I think it’s a great idea,” he answered.
“How about you officiate us?” Trevor suggested. “And I’ll finally cave and let Y/N have Cole as her Man of Honor instead.”
“I’d be honored,” Quinn said.
You didn’t say it out loud yet, but something about Trevor asking Quinn’s permission to ask you out on a date and then asking him to marry you two brought you immense joy. It felt like your story together was coming full circle. It was perfect.
You held on to Trevor’s hand as the three of you made your way back downstairs. Everyone’s eyes were immediately directed towards you, all of them filled with either worry or sympathy.
Jack got up off the couch and walked over to you, “Want a hug? Or do you want Trevor?”
You gave your brother a soft smile and wrapped your arm that wasn’t attached to Trevor around his waist. Jack’s arms slid around your shoulders as he held you in a firm hug.
“How do you want to ask this?” Trevor asked you.
“Ask what?” Cole asked. “Are you eloping? Are you asking for permission to elope?”
“No, dumbass,” you laughed lightly. “We do have something to ask of you, though. You and um… Dad.”
The room stilled. It had been addressed multiple times that Quinn was walking you down the aisle.
Cole and Jim moved so that they were sitting next to each other on the couch; you and Trevor took a seat on the ottoman.
You turned your attention to Jim, “I’ve already talked to Quinn, and he’s not offended or anything. But Trevor and I— well, I guess mainly me, decided to ask if you’d like to walk me down the aisle instead? You’ve been a dad to me for almost all my life. Not just a father, but a dad, too. And I’d—“
You started to get choked up. Everyone now knew what you were going to ask, but it was clear that you wanted to get it out. Trevor rubbed your back for some encouragement and to help calm you.
“I’d like you to walk me down the aisle,” you said.
Ellen was crying, and Jim had the happiest face on him that you’ve ever seen.
He took your hands in his as his eyes started to water a bit as well, “I’d like nothing more.”
You got up and hugged him, really hugged him. Quinn means so much to you, but you weren’t really sure why you didn’t go with the most obvious and important father figure in your life in the beginning of planning. Hell, you’ve been calling him “dad” since you were in middle school and really started to understand things about life.
You wiped some tears as you pulled away and forced out a fake laugh to shake off some of the intense emotions you were still feeling. You sat back down and faced Cole this time to ask him your next question.
“I know Trevor and I originally asked you to marry us, but since Quinn isn’t walking me anymore, Trevor had the idea of him marrying us instead. He asked Quinn’s permission to date me in the first place, which obviously later turned into us being boyfriend and girlfriend, so I thought it was a perfect idea that he’d be the one making us husband and wife.
“I was originally going to ask Taryn, but I haven’t yet so she doesn’t even have to know. So, Cole?”
“Yes?” he smiled. He knew what was coming.
“Would you be my Man of Honor?”
Cole dived towards you and tackled you into a hug, “I would be HONORED to be your Man of Honor, best friend number two!”
You let out a real laugh as Cole snuggled himself against you even harder to where his face was practically making a permanent indent in the ottoman cushion.
“Alright! Tell me how you really feel,” you teased.
“Nothing else has changed, right?” Jack asked. “I’m still one of Trevor’s best men?”
“Yeah, bud,” Trevor assured him. “I’ve got my groom party set in stone.”
You were really happy with your decision. Yeah, sometimes your past comes back to you with a vengeance, but you just have to take a step back and remember all the good that the bad brought.
Your fucked up family brought you a real family.
A family that every one of your school classmates thought you were apart of anyways.
A family that showed you what a family should be.
A family that showed you what love was.
A family that still shows you what love is.
A family that brought you the love of your life.
A family that brought you the best people in your life.
A family that brought you back to life.
It wasn’t that day, but eventually you were able to listen to Little Bird with a smile. You sing along to it with so much heart and emotion every time; all because of Jim Hughes.
All because of your real dad.
You’ve been a Hughes for seventeen years. And soon, you’ll be Mrs. Zegras-Hughes to finally, legally, solidify that.
You can’t wait.

Stone Cold
summary: You struggle to get on Wayne Munson’s good side.
content: Angst, breakup and makeup, Wayne is a little mean, Eddie doesn’t listen, heartbreak, apologies everywhere.
word count: 2.9k
── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆──
You and Eddie were friends once, but you couldn’t keep your hands off of each other. Everyone around you could see from a mile away that the two of you were more than that. You played with his hair and he would steal food off of your plate. You would take his rings off and put them on and sometimes he would stick his head under your shirt and blow raspberries on your stomach. Sometimes you would kiss his cheek and sometimes he would hold your face in his hands. That’s kind of when the friendship stopped and the relationship started. It was still fresh, and there were many wrinkles to iron out about it; one being Wayne Munson.
You were spending the night at Eddie’s and you needed to use the bathroom. You detangle yourself from the sheets and the sleeping log you recognized as Eddie. He whines at the sudden movement but a peck on the cheek puts him back at ease. You get dressed and head out of the room towards the bathroom.
You close the door and spin on your heels in the small hallway. You nearly jump out of your skin when you see Eddie’s uncle, Wayne standing in the hall. He’s got a sullen look on his face when he sees you. You smile nervously, “Sorry, Wayne, you scared me. I’m just heading to the bathroom.”
He doesn’t say a word and just grimaces before walking back to the living room. You furrow your brows at his reaction before continuing to the bathroom. When you get back into Eddie’s bed, you shake him gently. “Eddie? Eddie.”
He slowly opens his eyes, “Hm? What babe? What’s wrong?”
“Your uncle frowned at me.” You say, “Do you think he’s upset I’m here right now?”
He shrugs, “It’s probably just his face. You’re fine. Don’t worry too much about it.” He wraps his arm around you pulling you into an embrace, “Just go back to bed.”
“Okay.” You weren’t too sure but Eddie knew his uncle more than you. So you closed your eyes and fell back asleep.
The next morning, you wake up early and decide to do something nice and make coffee for Wayne before he leaves for work. You pour it into a mug once it’s finished and just as you do, Wayne comes out of his room. “Morning Wayne. I made you some coffee.” You hold out the mug to him.
He doesn’t react at first. You feel your heart sink and your hands begin to sweat. He purses his lips and looks at the mug. “That ain’t one of the drinking mugs.” Your eyes go wide and your smile fades. You had accidentally taken one of the display mugs hanging from the cabinets. You thought since they were in the kitchen they counted for actual use.
“I am so sorry, Wayne. I’ll clean it right now.” You quickly dump out the coffee and clean the mug. You hold it out to him again.
“Now you’ve wasted a fresh cup of joe.” He sighs, “I’ll just brew some at work.” He then leaves the trailer for the day. You set the mug down, completely embarrassed at the interaction.
You dig your nails into the counter before putting the mug back and going back to Eddie’s room. As quietly as you can, you start to collect your things. However, you were not successful and Eddie begins to wake up. “What are you doing?” He mumbles.
“I’m just getting my stuff together.” You tuck your stuff in your bag and sit on the bed next to him. He rests his hand on your thigh and smiles up at you, “Why are you awake so early?”
You sigh, thinking back to just moments ago. “I was trying to impress your uncle by making a cup of coffee for him before work. But then I accidentally used a mug from his collection. And so I panicked and dumped the coffee out and then he frowned at me again.” Your shoulders go slack, “I don’t think he likes me much.”
Eddie laughs a little, and you slap his chest, “Sorry, sorry, I don’t mean to laugh. I just wish I was awake to see it happen.”
“Eddie!”
“I’m kidding! Look, I am sure, he was just cranky about having a late night and an early morning. He gets like that sometimes. Don’t worry about it too much, okay?.”
“Okay,” You lean down and kiss him. “I should still probably go. I’ve got work later.”
He pouts, “Fine let me get dressed, and I’ll take my baby home.” He sits up and wraps you in a hug, peppering your face with kisses. Without even knowing it, Eddie was making you feel better. He makes you a cup of coffee from what remained in the pot and some toast with jam. He holds your hand and helps you into the van. You were sure he was going to help you put your seatbelt on too.
As he drives, your mind can’t help but wander to the old man. How upset he looked from the night before and in the morning. Could he really not like you? Eddie didn’t seem worried, so you shouldn’t be either.
You arrive at your house and you walk over to his side of the car. He leans out of his window and you kiss him. You feel him smile against your lips, “Come over tonight.”
“Again, Eddie, I was just at your house.” You giggle.
“Well, I want to see you again. Come over and let’s watch a movie. We can watch one of your sappy romance ones.” He playfully rolls his eyes.
You smile widely, “Really? Okay then. Your uncle working late?”
“Like always. So stop worrying. I’m getting scared you’re thinking about him more than me.” He pouts.
You squish his cheeks and kiss him again, “I promise, I’m not.” You absolutely were. That man had a stare that could see through lead. And he could stare into your soul. You just wished he could see that you were being authentic. That you loved Eddie and that you hoped to be together with him for a long time. You think about it all day and well into the night while watching a movie at Eddie’s trailer.
You rest against Eddie’s chest and watch the movie you chose. He’s fast asleep and you were on your way there too. Halfway through the movie, you hear the door open and you see Wayne come in. You give him a polite smile but it quickly fades. He lets out a heavy sigh before heading back to his room. You curl up a little and tuck your head under Eddie’s chin. “Is the movie over?” He mumbles, his eyes still closed.
You hit the stop button and turn off the television, “Yeah, let’s head to bed.” You both make your way into his room.
“Did Wayne come home?” He says as he changes into his pajamas.
“Mhm.” You’re tight-lipped as you change.
He looks over at you, “Did he say anything?”
“Mm-mm” You shake your head.
He pulls you into a hug, “He probably had a long day and didn’t want to talk.” He kisses the top of your forehead. He then pulls you to his bed and holds you in his arms as he falls asleep. It takes you longer to close your eyes. Anxiety creeps up your back as you stay under the same roof as Wayne Munson.
The next day, Eddie gives you a ride to work and even offers you a ride home afterward. However, you decline and head inside. You worked at the general store downtown. All you did was take inventory and stock shelves while another woman, Loretta, worked the register. Easy job for easy pay.
You’re stocking cans behind a shelf when you see Wayne’s car park in front of the store. You slowly sink behind the shelf and hide and you hear the sound of the store bell chime.
“Hello hello, Wayne.” The ever-so-charming Loretta speaks, “what brings you in today?”
“Just grabbing some quick stuff. That boy is going to eat me out of house and home I tell you that.” He mutters. “Him and that little girlfriend of his.” Your heartbeat picks up. Quietly, you tuck your knees into your chest as you continue to listen.
“Oh yeah, how’s that going? He seems to be swooned by her.” Loretta says. You hear Wayne just in front of the shelf you were behind.
“Well she’s something, I guess.” He sighs, “never seems to want to leave my house.” For the past few days, that’s all she wanted to do. “Starting to get on my nerves, that's for sure.”
“Sounds like you don’t like her.” Loretta’s tone had shifted. She was no longer being nice, she was getting answers, for you.
“Well, honestly I don’t.” He scoffs. “She’s all in my kitchen, in my living room, in my bathroom. I can’t have anywhere in peace.”
Then peace is what he’ll get. Once he’s gone, you head to the storage room and call Eddie’s line to tell him you’ll be coming over later. You felt terrible at how methodical this all was.
You drive over to Eddie’s house from your downtown apartment. Eddie throws open the door for you and takes you back to his room. “Okay, so today, I was thinking we could sit and listen to some new tapes I got from the store. And then maybe we head to the burger spot between Hawkins and Roane and then—”
“Eddie, I came here to talk to you.” Your voice is no louder than a whisper.
He pulls you close, “We can talk all night.” He leans down for a kiss but you turn your face away, “What’s the matter?”
Your eyes begin to tear up as you pull from him, “I can’t do this anymore.”
You see Eddie’s face wilt, “Wh-what do you mean?”
“This relationship is just not going to work.” You avoid his sad gaze as you say those words.
“What do you mean? Did I do something wrong? Tell me if I did, so I can fix it?” His voice cracks as he speaks. He takes a step forward but you take a step back.
“It’s nothing you did, Eddie.”
“Then is this about Wayne?”
You purse your lips, “I just don’t think we can make it work.”
“No, we can, I'm sure we can. Let me talk to him, okay? Make sure he changes his attitude.” Eddie holds your arms.
You push him away, “It’s not something that will go away so easily, Eddie. He doesn’t like me being around and I think it’s for the best if I wasn’t.”
“Why? We can figure this out.”
“There is nothing to figure out! He does not like me! He said it! He does not like me being in his house! And he is so willing to say it to other people and you are so willing to brush it off! God for days he’s been acting like this and you haven’t done anything, Eddie. I tried to ignore it but I couldn’t. Not anymore! I can’t be here. I can’t be around you knowing that I am not welcome.”
“Baby, I’m sorry, I didn’t know he said that. I didn’t know—”
“And that’s what makes it worse, I care about you a lot. And I don’t want to force you to choose.”
“So you’re making the choice for me?!”
“No, I’m making my own choice.” You wipe a tear that streaked down your face, “Goodbye Eddie.”
You exit his room and head out of the trailer. Outside on the porch, you see Wayne standing there. He looks at you awkwardly and he opens his mouth to speak. But he is interrupted by Eddie stumbling out of the house after you. “Wait! Wait! Please, come back inside. Let’s talk about this.”
You get into your car and stare ahead as Eddie taps on the glass. You can’t look him in the eyes. You take a deep breath and start the car pulling into the road and out of the park, leaving Eddie in the dust.
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─── It’s been a week or so since you broke up with Eddie. You hadn’t seen him in a while since then. Not that you had been going out either. For you, it was home, then work, then back home again. You missed him so much. You missed spending time with him. The long phone calls at night, and the sleepovers. Waking up to his sleeping face and making him breakfast in your kitchen.
Your heart ached for Eddie during the day. You missed when he would come in and surprise you during work. Now your days feel monotonous. Stacking cans, taking inventory and working the register.
You sit behind the register flipping through a comic when the door chime rings. You look up and to your surprise it was Wayne. You don’t say a word and look back into your comic. You assume he will move quietly through the aisles and go about his business.
You would be very incorrect. He comes over to the register and clears his throat. You peek over the comic again, “Need something?”
“Can we talk?” He asks, in all honesty, he looked worse for wear.
“Is it about the stuff in the store?” You close the comic.
“Now you know it ain’t about that.” He frowns.
“Then there is nothing for us to talk about.” You pop open the comic again.
He sighs, “I came here to apologize. Will you at least let me do that?”
“What is there to apologize for? I was eating you out of the house and home remember.”
He is taken aback by that statement. He lets out another sigh, “I didn’t mean what I said. I was just frustrated is all.”
“Frustrated that I was in your house?”
“No, I was frustrated with Eddie. And I took it out on you. That was wrong of me.” You put down the comic, ready to hear him out, “It’s like as soon as y’all got together, he forgot how he was raised. Letting you into the kitchen all by yourself that’s not how we treat guests. I was surprised you found the coffee grounds. And that day, in here, I greatly apologize. That damn boy can work a nerve when all he talks about is a girl he really, really likes.” You nod as you listen. “Now you don’t gotta forgive me so soon but Eddie misses you and he loves you to death. Don’t take it out on him.”
You purse your lips, “I’ll… I’ll think about it.” His eyes sadden a bit but he nods in understanding. He then leaves the store.
After work you head home, you think about everything Wayne says and it causes you to laugh. Eddie had annoyed Wayne so much he started to get annoyed by you too. Throughout the evening you eye your phone, debating whether or not to call. You chew on your bottom lip until finally picking up the phone.
You dial Eddie’s phone slowly and wait for the phone to ring. It rings a few times until you hear it get picked up. “Hello?” It was him. His voice was raspy and he must have been in bed.
“Eddie? It’s me. Can you talk right now?” You whisper. You didn’t need to but it felt like your normal voice would sound too harsh.
“Yes.” He lets out a breath, “Is everything okay?”
You smile at his worry, “I’m okay. Think you could come over? To talk face to face. I have a lot to tell you.”
“Yes! Yes. I’m on my way.” He tries to control his excitement, “I’ll be there in a bit.” You hang up and wait for him to arrive. Which isn’t that long a while later. He arrives with his hair damp and out of breath.
“Did you shower before getting here?” You ask as you let him in
“Maybe?” He shoves his hands in his pockets, “What did you want to talk about?”
“Wayne came to the store today.”
“He didn’t bother you again did he?” He straightens up.
You wave it away and shake your head, “No, no. He came by to apologize actually.” He relaxes again.
“That’s good.”
You nod, “He also told me you missed me.”
Eddie nods and shuffles his feet. “I do. But I respect your choice so I’ve been keeping my distance.
“Well, can I just say, I missed you too?” You take his arm and lead him to the couch to take a seat. He places his hand in yours and you rub your thumb over his knuckle, “I was so worried about impressing Wayne, I lost sight of us.”
“I did too. You were freaking out and instead of helping you I let it get worse.” He squeezes your hand gently. “That’s not how you take care of somebody you love.”
“It seems we were all in the wrong, huh?” You giggle.
“Some more than others.” He mumbles, “So does that mean we are okay?”
“Yeah, we’re okay.” You smile and press your lips against his. He makes a happy noise against your lips. “Could you believe this all started because you wouldn’t shut up about me?”
He shrugs, “I love you. I needed to tell somebody about it.”

Being a bigger girl meant never celebrating a Valentine’s day. Normally you were single and if you did have a boyfriend, somehow the relationship never overlapped with the holiday. So the last thing you wanted to do was step outside this apartment and see all the happy couples handing each other red teddy bears and boxes of chocolates. You wanted to love the holiday, oh so desperately, but how could you when you were never the one receiving stuffed bears and chocolates? Instead you went to the store after Valentines and bought all the half off candy for yourself.
So knowing you only had to hold out for one more day of this torture you prepared to open the door to your apartment and find romance on the other side. Instead, you’re met with a bare ass that has you yelping out loud and turning around. The boy jumps and turns, trying to use as much of the small towel around his waist to cover himself.
“God, I’m so so sorry. I just, I got locked out. I figured everyone would be gone at work” he profusely apologizes and you slowly rub at your eyes, now preferring to see all the hearts decorating the streets.
“Yeah, I have the day off. Can I ask how you even got locked out like that?” you question, still refusing to turn around and look at him.
“I was grabbing my mail, the door swung close and apparently I never unlocked it” he said and you can hear the clink of the metal mailbox hung on the wall by his door.
“You needed the mail so desperately you came to get it in a towel?” your voice has a teasing tone and you can hear the boy sigh behind you.
“I just got my script delivered. I was a little excited” he explains, voice defeated and shoulders hung low.
“Is it safe to look?” you ask, tired of staring at your kitchen table as you talk with the boy.
“Everything that can be covered, is covered” he answers and you turn around, met with shaggy hair and a lopsided smile leaned against his door. A striking white towel covering him from his happy trail to just above his knee caps. You’d be lying if the sight of his chest hair didn’t make you want to run your hands through it.
“Well neighbor, let’s get you inside before Miss Johnson down the hallway is also greeted with your bare ass. You can borrow some sweatpants while I call the super” you urge, hand waving him inside and the surprise that crossed his face is an adorable sight to see.
“Thank you, oh my gosh thank you!” he grins, shuffling towards your door and once he’s inside you shut it behind him, avoiding seeing any bareness again at all costs.
“I’ll be right back” you say, going into your room and finding black sweatpants amongst the huge pile in your room. Normally you wouldn’t want a handsome man like that to discover you more than likely wear the same size or possible even bigger than him but you also couldn’t leave him bare naked and alone.
“You’re the best” he says as you return with the sweatpants in hand and all you can do is nod.
“Bathrooms first door on the right, I’ll call Jim. He owes me a favor anyway so it shouldn’t be long” you tell him and he nods, shuffling down the hallway while you pull the phone out of your pocket and find the number.
Jim the super answers after only a few rings and when he hesitates to come right away you remind him exactly why he should come this instant to which he agrees after saying he was only ten or so minutes away from the building. You could handle ten minutes alone with the handsome neighbor, right? Yet you don’t believe you can when he finally returns from the bathroom now clad in your black sweatpants, chest and broad arms on full display with the white towel now hung over his shoulder.
“What’d he say?” the handsome boy asks and you smile and shove your phone in your pocket.
“He’s on his way, should only be about ten minutes. You want coffee or anything?” you ask and he smiles before nodding. You don’t hesitate to move to the machine and start brewing a fresh batch for you two to share.
“I’m Joe by the way” he says, taking a seat at the counter as you free two mugs from the cupboard.
“Nice to meet you Joe, you live here long?” you say after telling him your own name. You ask because to be honest you don’t remember him and based on his looks he is definitely someone you would remember.
“Two months I think, I’m away for work a lot though” he says and you nod, leaning against the counter.
“Explains why we haven’t met. I’m usually pretty good about keeping up to date with newbies around here” you tell him and Joe laughs lightly.
“Well I’m sorry we had to meet like this” he offers and you shake your head, waving a hand at him.
“Don’t worry about it. We used to have a guy that flashed people intentionally. Miss Johnson pressed chargers and he got booted fairly quickly. I just figured your girlfriend locked you out for forgetting Valentine’s day or some shit” you say with a snort and Joe laughs heartily.
“Is that your way of asking if I have a girlfriend?” and a deep blush covers your cheeks because that really wasn’t what you had meant but you’d be lying if you weren’t curious as well.
“No, actually. There’s just not many other reasons for me to find a bare ass in the hallway” you say and now he’s the one blushing, embarrassment filling him completely.
“No girlfriend, just not a very well thought out guy is all” he says and you crack a grin at that. “What about you, on your way to see your boyfriend for Valentine’s huh?”
“No boyfriend and in no mood to celebrate Valentine’s Day” you offer and his eyebrows furrow as he looks at you with curiosity.
“What, get your heart broken on Valentine’s day or something?” he asks, a hand coming up to run through his hair and you chuckle.
“No, try never had a boyfriend on Valentine’s day” you say with the shake of your head, finally moving to fill two cups now that the coffee was done brewing.
“That feels like a lie” he says and you give him a confused look, sliding the fresh mug across the counter and pushing cream and sugar his way.
“No lie here, not many men want to date women like me” you tell him once you’ve done up your coffee the way you like and take a sip.
“Well I find that hard to believe because from my side of things I’m a little disappointed I never realized how gorgeous my neighbor was” his words catch you so off guard your spluttering coffee back into your cup and coughing lightly. He wears a concerned look as you calm yourself down.
“I mean no offense but I don't appreciate flattery if it's not honest" you say, napkin wiping the stray coffee drops on your chin.
"Who says I'm not being honest, I have no reason to lie especially after you just caught me in a very vulnerable state and was kind enough to help me out" and the intensity in his eyes proves that what he is saying holds a truth to them you had never quite experienced before.
"You're serious?" you say, possibly ruining your chances with this attractive man even further but he doesn’t falter one bit.
"You're surprised?" he says with a soft chuckle, a bit bewildered by his neighbor. He had flirted with many girls in a life time but he had never ha one react quite like you.
"Yes, I'm surprised. I'm a big girl, I normally get looked over or in worst cases harassed. I never get told I'm gorgeous" you say with a soft shake of your head and the breathy chuckle that falls from his lips is one of surprise.
'Well then you haven’t quite found the right man yet because you’re gorgeous. In fact I figured I didn’t have a chance after how you found me this morning" the soft blush the boy wears on his cheeks is authentic and suddenly you’re a bumbling idiot unsure of what to say because to be honest you don’t recall a man ever flirting with you.
“You didn’t ruin it, I mean you have a chance. Not that I’m actively looking, but the sight wasn’t terrible. Oh God why did I say that, I’m sorry. I just didn’t expect this, you’re very kind. I’m a-“
“Hey, the doors open” Jim’s voice bellows through the door after a hard knock.
“Thank you Jim” you call back and now the sweet boy is standing from his seat and you’re hoping you haven’t ruined things to far.
“I better get some of my own clothes on. Thank you for saving me. Maybe we could see each other tonight, let me return these sweatpants?” and you’re grinning, more comfortable with him then you ever expected.
“Yeah, I would like that a lot” you say and he smiles, taking one more sip of coffee before heading towards the door.
“I’ll see you” he says with a soft smile before disappearing behind the door completely and you curse yourself for being such a fool. You knew you had to redeem yourself.
So when he stops back later that night in his own grey sweats and black T-shirt you try your best to stay cool. Which seemed to have worked when he kisses you goodbye. Valentine’s day turned out to not be such a bust after all.

Andrei Iosivas x Reader
summary: It's your bf Andrei's 24th birthday today and he scores his first NFL touchdown.
_________________________________________________________
Happy birthday baby! I love you so much and know you are going to kill it today. Can't wait to see you :)
You sent off the text to your boyfriend Andrei right when you woke up. You were sad you didn't get to start the morning with him but it being gameday meant he was staying in the team's hotel by the stadium. You met Andrei during your junior year at Princeton and the two of you had been inseparable since.
After he was drafted earlier this year your job search was immediately changed to looking in Cincinnati and you were lucky to land a job downtown in marketing. The two of you shared an apartment nearby and you were starting to love post-grad life.
"Knock knock," you heard your sister call, coming through the front door. Andrei had been annoyed when you copied a key for her but you knew he really didn't mind. You pulled yourself out of bed and headed towards the kitchen where she greeted you with a bag from your favorite bagel place.
"I love you so much," you said as you took a bite.
"Of course you do, now let's get ready."
-------------------------------------
You made it to the stadium in record time which for you was only 10 minutes before kickoff. Today you opted for a very oversized Andrei jersey with thigh-high black boots. Andrei gets free tickets for you every game so you and your sister were sitting in the same section as other player's families. By the time you made it to your seats the team was kicking off and you quickly spotted Andrei locked in on the sideline. You were a bundle of nerves as always, especially because the season wasn't going as great as everyone expected. The nerves got worse during the game as it was back and forth, tied at 7 heading into the second quarter.
With 12 minutes until the half, the Bengals had driven down to the 3-yard line and you clutched your sister's hand. Joe stood in shot gun, faked the ball to Joe Mixon before being forced to scramble. Your heart was pounding as he stepped forward to throw; the pass ripped through the air towards the left side of the end zone and right into your boyfriend's hands. Both your arms flew up as you started screaming and jumping around with your sister.
Andrei was congratulated by his teammates and trotted back to the sidelines searching the crowd for you. The second your eyes met he smiled and blew you a kiss.
The rest of the game went by and the Bengals managed to pull off the win. As fans began to clear out you stayed chatting with another player's fiancee in the stands. Eventually, security let the families on the field and it wasn't long before you felt a familiar pair of arms pick you up and swing you around. You squealed and threw your arms around his neck.
"Baby! Happy birthday, you were so great," you said smiling. He smiled down at you before grabbing your chin to pull you in for a kiss.
"Well yeah, I had my good luck charm in the stands," he said cheekily. You rolled your eyes playfully swatting his chest. "I have a good idea what my present can be," he said looking at you intensely. You took a sharp breath of air before tapping his nose.
"After your party, if you're good." He laughed and brought his mouth to yours once again.

"You what, bro?" Ja'Marr asks.
"I told her I loved her," Joe replies, shutting his locker. Ja'Marr grabs his shoulders and shakes him.
"You have only been dating for nine months. What goes on in that brain of yours? Let the women say those words first. I taught you better than this." Ja'Marr shakes his head, causing Joe to laugh at the younger boy's words. It's been three weeks since Joe dropped the L bomb on you and three weeks since he last spoke to you.
"Should I call her?" Joe asks, looking through his phone. You haven't returned his texts or his calls.
"She ghosted you. Your girlfriend ghosted you. I need you to get a grip and move on." Ja'Marr grabs Joe's shoulders and forces him to sit on the bench.
"Don't listen to a word he says. Doesn't he have like three baby mamas?" Sam chimes in, making Joe laugh. Ja'Marr flips him off and walks away. Sam sits and holds out his hand, asking for Joe's phone. Joe hands it over and lets him scroll through the messages. He makes a face and shakes his head.
"She definitely ghosted you. Maybe she's just busy. She is one of the top actresses out right now." Sam hands the phone back. They didn't help Joe at all.
"He said what?" Eliza, your best friend, shouts, jumping up from the bed. You turn around and nod your head.
"He said he loves me. I panicked and didn't reply. I've been ignoring him since that day."
"Girl, that was three fucking weeks ago! What is wrong with you?"
"I can't say those words to him. I didn't even think things would get this deep. I thought we were having a good time together. Oh God, he's calling me!" You toss your phone on the bed and start pacing. Your best friend grabs your phone and forces it into your hands after answering it.
"Hey-Hi," You answer, glaring at her.
"Oh, hi. I didn't think you would pick up. How are you?" Joe nervously fidgets with his seatbelt.
"Busy. I'm sorry. I picked up a new role, so I got invested. I'm sorry." You apologize.
"I understand. Umm, I'll be in LA for some work. I was wondering if I could come to see you."
Eliza nods her head, telling you to say yes. You frown and shake your head.
"Yes. Sure. That would be great. Text me the info. I have to go." You hang up and throw your phone.
"See, was that so hard? The guy seems to really like you. Give him a chance. He's hot. You've said the sex is fantastic, and he's the hottest thing right now. America is obsessed with him. This is a win. See where it goes." She tells you. You start playing with your fingers and catch yourself before you can get carried away. Joe arrives Thursday night, and you guys stay in for dinner and a movie.
"I can't believe you've never seen Titanic. It's my favorite movie like ever." You're about to sit in the movie chair, but Joe pulls you onto his lap.
"A movie about a real historical tragedy is your favorite?" Joe questions you. YOu bury your face in his neck.
"When you put it like that, it sounds terrible. But Leo and Kate are all-time greats. Their chemistry was beautiful. You'll see." You climb off his lap and sit in your chair as the movie starts. Joe barely watches the film. His eyes continue to drift to you. At one point, you start crying, and he leans over to wipe your tears.
"The way he loved her. Urgh, my heart is so full."
"So you are a fictional romantic?" Joe asks. You pause the movie and turn to him.
"What do you mean?" You ask, feeling a little on edge.
"I mean, I confessed to you, and you panicked and ignored me for three weeks. But things in movies and shows have you smiling and crying."
You open your mouth to speak but don't know how to answer.
"I like what we have going on, but love isn't something I'm looking for. If you want to continue this relationship, I want to keep things the same." You stand up, taking the empty popcorn bowl to refill it, but Joe lightly grabs your wrist and stands up.
"Why does love scare you?"
"It doesn't! I have the right to be happy with my situation, and I don't think love has anything to do with that."
Joe cups your face and reads your expression. His thumb grazes your bottom lip.
"Do I make you happy?"
You nod your head, getting lost in his puppy blue eyes.
"Do I make you feel good?" Joe asks, bending down so that your lips touch. You nod again and lean forward to kiss Joe, but he pulls away with a chuckle.
"Don't tease me," You pout, pushing his chest and storming away. Joe takes a deep breath. Joe could tell a lot about you from your eyes. You were going to run every time love was the subject. Maybe you had a bad relationship, but since you've been famous, you never had a relationship. Or perhaps it wasn't public knowledge. Joe follows you upstairs into the kitchen, where you are pouring a glass of wine. He lifts you and sets you on the counter.
"So, who was this guy?"
"What guy?" You ask, sipping your wine. Joe stands between your legs.
"The guy who made you afraid of love." He replies, rubbing your thighs. You chuckle and put your glass down.
"I don't want to have this talk. I want my wonderful, strong, and very attractive boyfriend to take me upstairs and fuck me into the mattress. Is that so hard to do?" You throw back the rest of your wine. Joe scoops you up and takes you to the bedroom, where he, in fact, fucks you into the mattress.
"Feels good." You cry, riding him, letting your hands squeeze his as you feel the rush of another orgasm flood over you. You buckle over when Joe suddenly grabs your hands, thrusting into you faster.
"I'm going to always make you feel good, baby." He whispers. Your mouth falls open, feeling Joe pound away at your poor overstimulated cunt. Joe quickly pulls out and flips you over. He pumps his cock a few times and cums all over your stomach. You reach up for him, and he complies, bending down to kiss you. Joe carries you again toward the shower this time. After changing the sheets, you guys lay in bed watching movies. Joe stares at your body through the sheet as he massages your feet. You turn around, smiling.
"Should I put clothes on?" You ask, noticing the print under the white sheet. Joe shakes his head, his face becoming noticeably red. He slides his hands up your calves as you turn back to the TV. Joe slyly slides the sheet off of your body. He repositions himself so that he is hovering over your butt. You squeal when he takes a bite.
"Joseph!" You giggle, turning over on your back. Joe kisses up your body to your lips.
"Keep your clothes off." He whispers. You nod your head as he works his way back down. When he gets to his treasure, he places your legs on his shoulders. The moment is interrupted by your best friend barging into the room. Joe grabs a pillow to cover himself.
"Omg! I am so sorry!" Eliza covers her eyes.
"E, what the fuck?" You shout, getting on your knees.
"Sorry! But tonight you were supposed to go to Zendaya's birthday party. We're already late!" Eliza yells, backing out of the room.
"Fuck. Sorry, Give me an hour." You yell, scrambling to get out of bed.
"Umm." Joe sits on the bed awkwardly.
"Oh, right. Do you want to come? We can't go together, but if you come with E, I think it should be good."
"It's alright. I'll stay here and watch something."
"Are you sure?"
"No worries, go have fun."
You return to the bed to kiss him and hurry to your closet. Joe makes himself comfortable, but after two hours, he becomes bored and decides to explore your home. He starts in the living room, where you have photos of your three brothers and father. After you and he first hooked up, he might have done a small (deep) dive on you. It did help that his sister-in-law is such a big fan; all he had to do was listen to her rant. Even his cousins adored you, so getting his family to tell him all about you was easy. Unknown to him, you did your own research on him. Joe had spent some time watching your interviews. He loved how much you adored your family. He could see the genuine happiness they brought you every time you spoke about them. Joe hopes to be introduced to them one day. He put the photo down and made his way to your piano room. You started playing piano when you were seven and haven't stopped since. Joe liked that you had such a special talent. On top of being a phenomenal actress, you had an incredible ear for music. He could listen to you play and sing for hours. It's insane to him how you didn't get into the music business first.
"Hello?" Joe picks up a phone call from you.
"Hey. Missing you. Can you tell I'm a little drunk?"
"Yeah, baby. Are you coming home?"
"What do I get if I come home?" You slur into the phone. Joe leans against the wall smiling to himself.
"Come....find out." He says, emphasizing come. You giggle into the phone and tell him you are on the way home. And when you get home, Joe takes over your body for the rest of the night. In the morning, you feel like a brand-new person. You stand by the stove, humming and dancing as the bacon cooks. Joe sits on the counter, watching you.
"You are so beautiful. Do you know that?" Joe asks. You stop and roll your eyes.
"I'm in nothing but a t-shirt freshly fucked. My hair is all over the place. I look a mess." You complain.
"I think you look the most beautiful right now. Mostly because I helped you get to this state." Joe grins. You slap his knee and turn back to the stove.
"I have to fly back home today after this interview but don't ghost me again." Joe hops down. You nod your head, flipping the bacon. Joe wraps his arms around you, kissing the top of your head.
"Baby, I'm serious. I care about you." He says, turning you around. You look at him and give him a reassuring grin. But Joe can see it in your eyes; you are again in flight or fight mode. Joe links your fingers with his and kisses each one.
"I care about you too. I won't ghost you. I'm enjoying my time with you and where this is going."
"Good. Does it make you uncomfortable when I tell you I love you?" He asks you. You let go of his hand and turn toward the stove.
"I'm not uncomfortable. I'm afraid."
"Of what?"
"Losing myself...again." You whisper the last part. Joe doesn't say anything, but his heart breaks for you.
"I won't let you lose anything."
"You can't promise that. When people fall in love, one person always falls deeper." You shake the feeling creeping up in your gut and start cooking again. Joe leaves you to your thoughts and packs his bag. Breakfast was a little more awkward than you wanted it t be; you tried to make small talk, but you could tell something was bothering Joe.
"If you want to end things, it's okay." You push your eggs around, and Joe puts his fork down.
"I don't. Let's talk again. I have to go now, but I'll call you. Come visit me when you can." He stands up and walks over to kiss you. Then a week goes by with no word from Joe, so you hope on the first flight to Ohio to surprise your boyfriend for a home game.
"You did amazing!" You squeal as he scoops you up.
"How long have you been waiting for me? If I had known you were coming, I would have hurried up. I still need to shower." Joe states fixing the towel around his waist. You lick your lips and pull your shirt over your head.
"I can help you with that." You say, unbuttoning your jeans. The smirk on Joe's face doesn't leave as he watches you tip-toe toward the shower. He stands by, watching you turn the shower on. The warm water hits your body, and you hold your hand for him to join you. Joe drops his towel, following you into the shower. He is very surprised at your spontaneous public session but doesn't complain one bit. How can he when he's losing himself while giving you the deepest strokes? Joe holds you against the shower wall tiles as you dig your nails into his shoulders.
"Fuck Joey right there." You cry out.
"Yeah, I know." Joe chuckles against your throat, leaving open-mouth kisses on your neck.
"Can I cum inside you?" Joe whispers. You nod your head, too fucked out to realize what he's asking at first. When your orgasm hits, you go limp in his arms.
"Yeah. Cum inside me." You mumble. This cause Joe to rapidly snap his hips, moaning your name and complimenting you on how good you feel. You can't help but let it all go to your head as he cums inside you for the first time. You spend five more mins making out and then finally get dressed.
"Oh yeah, your parents want to meet at their house. I was sent in here to tell you that. I'll meet you over there." You kiss him goodbye and leave. Joe quickly dresses but finds his athletic trainer there stunned.
"No fucking way. You are hooking up with-"
Joe covers his mouth before he can say your name.
"I need you to keep this quiet."
"Why? You are banging the hottest chick in the game right now. She is everywhere."
"I know, but please."
"Fine, but you owe me, Joe." He says, leaving. Joe prays that he doesn't open his mouth. Ever since you ghost him, he feels he needs to walk on eggshells to keep you from running. There had to be some reason you wanted things to be kept quiet. Joe arrives at his parent's house and finds you in the back, where everyone is around the bonfire. You stand up to give him your seat so you can sit on his lap.
"Your mom was getting worried about you." You whisper into his ear.
"Sorry, my girlfriend held me up." He answers back. You cuddle up to him, listening to his parents tell you stories of when Joe was younger. The night ends with you and Joe back in bed.
"I have to go to Italy for the next few weeks for some shoots."
"Is that why you came to see me?" Joe asks, sitting up. You stare up at the ceiling.
"I didn't want you to think I was ghosting you again." You lean on your elbow, turning to the side to give him your full attention.
"Can I ask you something?" Joe is ready to dive deeper into that head of yours.
"Go ahead."
"Why don't you want to go public about us? I'm sure there will be speculation when you've been to two games already and photos of you around my family."
"Which is why I've attended other sports games. I went to the Rams games a few times."
"But why? Why keep us a secret?" Joe asks, rubbing your hand. You slip your hand away and get up from the bed to grab your clothes.
"I should take a plan B." You say, going through your purse. Joe lays back down and stares at the ceiling. It seems he takes one step forward with you and two steps back.
"Can we talk without getting mad or changing the subject?" This time, Joe gets up and follows you to the bathroom.
"Joe, I can't give you the answers you're looking for. There are reasons I do what I do. I can't love you right now."
"What do you mean right now? Then when? Do you think I will wait around for you to love me?" Joe's voice comes out louder than he expected it. Both of you are shocked. You squeeze your palms so tight that your nails dig into your flesh. Joe looks down at your closed fists and tries to reach out, but you flinch away.
"Hey. Baby, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to raise my voice." Joe's voice is softer. Joe reads over your body language and takes a step back.
"I need to go. I have to catch a flight to Italy. I'll call you." You stand there waiting for him to leave the bathroom. Joe takes the hint and leaves you to get dressed. He sits on the bed panicking, but you come out of the bathroom in a different mood.
"I'll call you when I land, okay? If you have some time, you should come to visit me." You kiss his cheek and grab your phone. Joe doesn't walk you out because he's never been more confused in his life—the dry texting between you two last weeks. During Joe's bye week, he uses this time to fly out and see you. Eliza plans everything so when you return to your hotel from a long day of shooting; you find your boyfriend with roses. A feeling of guilt rises in your chest, and you drop your bag running over to him. Joe pulls you into his arms.
"I'm sorry for being difficult. I want things with us to work. If you give me some time, I think things with us could work out."
"Of course. That's what being in a relationship is about. We will work on things together."
"Thank you for coming to see me. It's been such a crazy schedule. I'm so tired. You don't have a game?"
"On bye week, so no game this week. I decided to come here, spend some days together, and fly back. So, are you going to show me a good time?" He asks. You nod your head eagerly. You show Joe the set and your trailer, telling him all about the movie's plot. Joe even gets to watch you in action.
"Who's your favorite actor?" Eliza asks while you guys have dinner at a local restaurant.
"Of all time or currently?"
"Currently, well, besides your girlfriend." Eliza gives you an elbow. You sip your wine and lay your head on your boyfriend's shoulder.
"My favorite actor right now is Jackson Taylor. I think he's amazing. I mean, I've probably watched every movie he's ever done. He's a good guy too. He has so many charity organizations too. I hope to collab with him one day. And he's from Ohio, so can't go wrong there." Joe laughs. Eliza looks at you, and your eyes are staring at the table.
"Nice." You comment, excusing yourself to use the restroom. Eliza watches you walk away and turns her focus to Joe.
"How much do you love her?" She asks, ready to give him the best friend shakedown.
"I'm in love with her completely. But I can sense she's not ready for that step. I want to take things as slow as she needs." Joe takes his card out to pay the bill.
"Be careful with her. She's fragile. But I think she's coming around these days. I haven't seen her so happy like this in a while." Eliza's comments stick with Joe all week. He knows there's more to the story, but he decided to take his time and let you tell him when you're ready. When you get back to the States, you go visit Joe. It's Christmas time, and you decide to spend the holidays with him. One year ago, you met at your cousin's wedding, and here you are, all lovey-dovey.
"Fuck, baby." Joe moans moving your hips as you ride him on the couch. Joe bites your shoulder, bouncing you up and down on his cock, sending waves of pleasure through your body.
"Don't stop." You cry, feeling yourself reach another orgasm. Joe flips you onto your back, pushing your legs to your chest.
"One more baby. Give me one more." Joe coaches another orgasm out of you as he fills you simultaneously. He grunts, and his hips stutter. Joe throws his head back and runs his fingers throw his sweaty hair. You lay there trying to catch your breath. Joe pulls out of you and reaches down to scoop you up for a quick shower. He kisses your back in the shower and tells you how much he loves you. Once both of you are fully dressed, you guys finish decorating your Christmas tree. Yeah, you both got carried away and decided to have sex in the middle of decorating.
"I did date someone before you." You place a snowflake on the tree and turn to Joe.
"Yeah?"
"I started dating him when I was 18. He was 30."
"What the fuck?"
"Umm yeah. It was hard for me to move on from him. The reason I can't go public is that he-I signed an NDA. And if our relationship ended, I couldn't date someone else for five years."
"What piece of shit did that to you?"
You shake your head.
"It doesn't matter. Joe, I'm happy with you. I want a future with you, so if you can just be patient with me, I can work this out."
"5 years...How long has it been?"
"3." You stop decorating to face Joe. He places his snowflake down and opens his arms.
"What he's doing can't be legal. There has to be some loop and-"
"No one knows besides Eliza. I was stupid and young, and new to Hollywood. I shouldn't have signed anything, but I thought he was my forever." You bury your face in Joe's chest as he rubs your back. Joe doesn't pressure you into telling him more about your ex; instead, he makes you his mother's famous hot cocoa, and you watch the polar express on the couch. Having Joe in your life gave you back the normalcy you craved. He was fun, caring, and loving. Joe always made sure you were comfortable and able to be yourself. In his eyes, you weren't a star; you were his world. Spending the holidays with Joe and his family left you feeling renewed. Joe has been asking to meet your family, but you're too afraid to take that step. What if things don't work out? What if Joe hates your family dynamic? What if Joe leaves you? What if-
"What are you thinking about?" Joe groans, kissing your forehead. You've been taking space in his home for the last few weeks. You didn't realize Joe was awake for the last 5 mins.
"Nothing. I have to fly home today. It's my dad's birthday." You close your eyes as Joe pulls you closer to his chest.
"Yeah?"
You loved waking up to Joe's deep morning voice. He always called you first thing in the morning when you were away from him.
"Would you like to meet him?"
"Are you sure?" He asks cautiously. You only nod your head. With Joe's season-ending because of the loss to KC, you thought that this was the right move. Joe will have a lot of downtime, so it's better to get the meeting over with. And with that, you find yourself making room for Joe in your own home. He arrives today, and you've already psyched yourself into him meeting your family. Everything needs to be perfect. But, of course, nothing goes your way. You get called into a last min appearance at some day party. Joe tells you it's okay, and he will find his way to the house. But Joe gets invited by Ja'Marr, who was there, so it works out for you. The place is packed with celebrities; you laugh and greet some friends and make sure to mingle with everyone because once you find Joe, you plan to stick by him for the rest of the party. That is, until you spot him. Ja'Marr is the first to see you and waves you over. You smile, walking over and hug him, Joe, and the man they're talking to.
"I can't believe we are talking to the legend himself, Jackson Taylor," Ja'Marr says excitedly. Joe agrees with the comment.
"Don't brag on me too much. I don't think I'm a legend yet." Jackson replies with a big grin.
"You are! Don't humble yourself. You are up there with Leo, DeNiro! You are!" Ja'Marr can't contain the excitement and asks you to get a photo of all three of them. You take his phone and snap a few pictures.
"How do you guys know her?" Jackson asks, placing his hand on the small of your back. Joe doesn't miss the way you stiffen.
"Who doesn't know her? She is also an amazing actress. She is on the cover of every magazine, and she's da-"
"My brothers are huge Bengals fans, so I took them to a few games." You interrupt Ja'Marr and take Jackson's hand off your back. Jackson takes this opportunity to hold your hand.
"You guys should do another movie together," Ja'Marr adds.
"What do you think, sunshine?" Jackson asks, kissing your hand. You nervously laugh and slide your hand out of his.
"That would be awesome. I need to find Eliza."
"Actually, you guys don't mind if I steal her away, right?" Jackson asks. Ja'Marr shakes his head, and Joe doesn't respond. Jackson takes your hand and pulls you away from the crowd. You snatch your hand out and walk in the opposite direction. Jackson follows you, calling your name. You bump into Joe and stumble back. He catches you and gives you a concerned look.
"I-"
"Joe Burrow. Look at us two Ohio boys. I wanted to talk to you about joining one of my charity events. Let's chat." Jackson steps in. Joe looks down at you, and you give him a weak smile.
"I'll leave you guys to it." You walk away to find Eliza and leave the party. But Eliza is currently chatting up some guy. You don't want to block, so you find a seat and stay there. Joe finds you sitting alone and takes a seat next to you.
"It was that piece of shit, wasn't it?" He asks you, eyes trained on Jackson, who is talking someone else up. You don't take your eyes off Eliza in the opposite direction. Joe shoots up, and you grab his hand.
"I'm ready to go home." You say with pleading eyes. Joe takes a deep breath, and you leave together. At home, Joe doesn't mention Jackson, but you know in the back of his mind he's dying to talk about it.
"How did you know it was him?" You ask, taking a seat next to him.
"When he touched you, you stiffened. Every time he spoke and we laughed at one of his stupid jokes, your face held a look of terror." Joe rubs your hand. Little things like that could bring you back to the surface, so you appreciate every small gesture from Joe.
"Oh. I thought I got better at faking it. But seeing you laugh with him, I feared he would take you away from me." Your voice is sad again, and Joe stands up and squats before you, cupping your cheeks.
"No one on this Earth can take me away from you."
"Joe, you don't know what kind of power he holds. He can have me blacklisted at the snap of his fingers. I don't know what I would do if he ruined your career too." You take Joe's hands off your face and stand up. Joe follows you to the kitchen.
"What are you saying?"
"We should break up. It's for the best that way; nothing can happen. I'm not breaking the contract and-"
"He can't hold that contract over you. You're a person, not an object. You can date whoever you want to date. Fuck that guy."
"Joe, please, you don't understand how this works. I won't go to jail, sure, but I will have my career ruined. I've worked so hard to get where I am. I can't let him take that away from me. My father gave up everything just to get me into auditions and school. I can't throw it all away. My career is too important!" You didn't realize you were yelling until the silence filled the space between you and Joe.
"I know you're scared, but he no longer controls you. Think about the people that would be behind you if you spoke up. Think about the women you will help keep him away from. Most importantly, think about how free you will feel after it all comes out. You deserve to be happy....to be loved."
You shake your head and step away from Joe.
"I'm sorry." You walk away, leaving Joe standing there, trying to find a way to fix this. But he is clueless for the first time when it comes to you. Joe finds you in the bedroom texting. You tell him it's over and that he should go home. There is nothing Joe can do but give space.
"She broke up with you? Out of nowhere?" Ja'Marr laughs, throwing his head back. Joe shakes his head and stares at his phone. His lock screen is a photo of you sleeping on his arm. He unlocks his phone to look at his home screen, which is another photo of you smiling down at him. It seems like an innocent photo, but you're in Joe's jersey riding him in that photo. Joe locks his phone and groans. He tried texting you, but you blocked him.
"Can't believe you messed that up. But since we both are single, we got invited to a party. There are bound to be bitches all over." Ja'Marr pulls Joe off the couch.
"I'm good. I'm going to stay here."
"Stay here and be sad? What kind of a best friend would I be if I let you do that? We are in LA; there are too many women for you to sulk about one, even if she is the hottest. Besides, I need a DD unless you want me to drink and drive!" Ja'Marr forces Joe to get dressed and come along to the party. Joe talks to a few people and mingles.
"Joey B! Am I allowed to call you that?" Jackson smiles, making his way over. Joe instantly stands up straight and glares at the older man.
"Joe is fine." He replies, correcting him. Jackson raises his eyebrow and nods.
"Thanks for coming to my party. I like to host these little events to have fun. You don't need to be football Joe; just be yourself." Jackson taps Joe on his shoulders with both hands. Joe removes his hand and tries to walk away.
"Is everything okay between us? Earlier, you were my biggest fan, and now I'm sensing animosity." Jackson crosses his arms over his chest. Joe wants to tell him to go fuck himself, but he has to protect you. This isn't protecting you.
"Everything is good. I'm tired, and Ja'Marr dragged me to this party. It's an honor to be here." Joe replies with a smile. It made him sick to his stomach to be conversing with him.
"Been there. So many of my friends dragged me out to parties; you get used to it, trust me." Jackson offers Joe a drink, but he declines. Joe continues to engage in unwanted conversations with Jackson, and when your name is mentioned, Joe mentally calms himself down.
"You guys seemed a little close at the party earlier."
"Not really," Joe mumbles, looking for Ja'Marr through the crowd.
"Seemed like it, but that one is quite the girl." Jackson smiles and laughs to himself.
"And what's that supposed to mean?" Joe turns toward Jackson, facing him. Jackson is a few inches short than towering Joe. His aura is intimidating, but Jackson laughs it off.
"You know these young stars that get around. I wouldn't get mixed up with that one. There are rumors, and I'm guessing you would like to keep the title as America's All-American good boy." Jackson's smile isn't inviting or nice. Jackson is threatening Joe. Joe stares into his green eyes, not backing down.
"I think I can handle myself."
"Relax. It was a joke. You're a good kid. Enjoy the party. I'll have my people contact your people." Jackson bumps Joe's shoulder as he walks away. Fuck. He knows. Joe knows he knows. There is no way he doesn't know. Joe had one opportunity to protect you, and he blew it. He let his stupid anger get the best of him. Joe grabs Ja'Marr, and they leave the party. The next morning, Joe is one of the celebrities on the gossip blog.
Jackson, Ja'Marr, and Joe photographed at party together.
Joe stares at the photo of him all smiles with the man who ruined his relationship without even trying. He throws his phone and screams. You haven't unblocked him, and you probably saw the headline. He picks up his phone, logs into IG to find your page, and realizes he's blocked there too. Joe does the most desperate thing he has ever done and emails you.
"Why is Joe emailing you?" Eliza laughs, checking your email. You have your makeup artist stop so you can read the email.
"Can you block it? Thank you." You tell her, handing the Ipad back. Eliza takes a deep breath and blocks Joe's email. The door opens, and Jackson walks in. You sit up straight as the room clears. Eliza stands in front of you protectively.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm the executive producer of the show. I think I'm allowed to be on set." Jackson laughs. You stare at him through the mirror.
"What? Your name was not on the project at all. I wouldn't have let her book if-"
"Money talks. I'd like to talk to her privately."
"Go fuck yourself. Stay away-"
"It's okay." Your voice is meek. Eliza looks at you, and you give her a nod. She leaves the room. Jackson stands behind you, touching your hair.
"Do you know why you got this role?" He asks. You don't look at him; only focus on your hands. Jackson softly grabs your face and turns it towards him.
"I'm a good actress." You whisper. Jackson laughs a loud belly laugh. He wipes his fake tears.
"Sweetheart, you're not good at all. I told the director to hire you. I think this is a better way to keep an eye on you. I met your little boyfriend."
"I don't have a boyfriend. You made sure of that." You spit, snatching your face out of his hand. Jackson lifts your hand to kiss it.
"I care about you. If you get caught up with relationships, it will only mess up your career. This is how I look out for you. I'm always going to love you. I'm always going to care about you. Stay away from him."
"I don't know who you're talking about. I'm not-"
"Joe Burrow."
You don't move at the name, and Jackson smiles.
"Maybe you are a good actress. I'll see you out there, sunshine." He kisses your cheek and finally leaves. You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding. You quickly put out hand sanitizer on your hand, trying to rub off his touch.
Joe flies back home to Cincinnati, heartbroken and confused. His brother opens the door, shocked to see his younger brother looking heartbroken.
"Is Janet here? I need to ask her something."
"What's up?" Janet appears almost out of nowhere.
"I need help with a contract. You're a lawyer, so I figured it makes sense." Joe says, walking into the living room.
"Your contract? What's going on?" Dan walks over, joining the conversation.
Joe takes a seat. If he's going to protect you, he needs to know everything on the contract. He doubts you will let him see it, but maybe Eliza would help in that area. Joe was going to do everything in his power to help you, even if that meant you couldn't be with him in the end.

lonesome tonight | austin!elvis x injured!reader
summary: after firing the colonel, elvis is headed back home to memphis. it isn't until he makes it to graceland that he learns about the tragedy of the previous night. sitting beside your hospital bed, elvis remembers a promise that you made to him back when you two were young. he's going to hold you to it.
pairing: austin!elvis x injured!reader
word count: 3,103
notes/warnings: angst!, mention of violence. this one is super sad, guys. the usual elvis angst mentions infidelity, which is a topic that i refuse to write- so this is what my brain came up with instead. in usual dolly fashion, this is a super detailed description of elvis going through the emotions of potentially losing you- the only thing that he truly has to live for.

He understood the words, but couldn’t grasp the meaning behind them. It echoed and echoed; reverberating there in his chest. It hollowed out the space right beside his heart, slowly spreading with each beat. This couldn’t be happening. Shouldn’t be happening. It felt like someone had punched a hole straight through stomach, knocking the breath from his lungs- the life from his body. He tried to speak. He tried to say something, but he couldn’t make a sound. “Elvis- Elvis, you’re going to make yourself faint. Breathe, brother. Breathe.” Joe Esposito was gripping his upper arms, but he couldn’t feel the pressure on his limbs. He couldn’t feel anything at all. He couldn’t hear, couldn’t see, couldn’t function. “God damn it, Vernon! Vernon!” Sonny and Red heard the commotion from the driveway, and were quick to scale the steps of the front porch, eyes wide as they took in the current state of their best friend.
“Son, the doctors said she might pull through. She’s in surgery right now, and we can go see her whenever she’s in recovery.” Vernon had pushed Joe to the side, his hands gripping at Elvis’s shoulders, then moving up to cup his face. It was almost like his father wasn’t standing there at all. He was looking through the older man. His eyes were glassy, his face pale. He couldn’t go through this again. He wouldn’t survive it. He thought that losing his mother was the worst thing that had ever happened to him. Part of his soul went right along with her.
You had always been off limits in his mind. Death wasn’t allowed to touch you. He was supposed to be the one to die first, because he couldn’t bear even the thought of losing you. It kept him awake most nights, his limbs tangled up with yours, his chest pressed tightly against your back. You were always so small in his arms. It only made him want to hold on tighter. You were too pure- too good for this world. “Elvis, breathe!” Vernon shouted, shaking the taller man. He felt like he was dying. He hoped that he was. “Joe, go get me some cold water from the tap.” There was movement all around him. Hands gripping, rubbing, shaking at him. He just kept staring. Never blinking. Never breathing.
Someone had hurt you. Someone had hurt you badly, and he hadn’t been there. You’d been alone, and it was all his fault. He should have postponed the show. He should have told the Colonel to go fuck himself. He should have, he should have, he should have. Because he never would have let this happen to you. He would have taken the bullet himself if he could. It should have been him. Vernon reached out for the cold glass of water, and without any warning he dumped all of the contents over Elvis’s head. The cold water made the man jump, gasping in a breath that rattled in his chest. His shirt was soaked, his hair hanging limply down in his eyes, but the shock had helped him remember how to breathe.
“Oh god, why?” Elvis screamed at the top of his lungs, his knees growing weak out from under him. Vernon tried to keep him upright, but he wasn’t strong enough to lift him. Elvis fell roughly to the carpeted floor on his knees, pain shooting up his legs. He didn’t care. He wanted to hurt. He wanted to bleed. He wanted to feel anything other than the crippling fear, guilt, and sadness. He hunched over, bracing his palms against the floor. The wedding band felt heavy on his finger as he threaded his fingers through the fibers of the carpet. “She’s just a girl! Why? Why? Why?” Vernon had never seen his son like this, not even when his own mother had died. He wasn’t quite sure what to do. Elvis didn’t care who was around him. Who could hear his screams or his moans of pure agony. His image didn’t matter anymore. Nothing mattered. A sob ripped through him so hard, and so loud that he felt as though he might tear right in half. “We don’t know why, baby. We don’t know why someone did this to her.” Vernon rubbed his son’s back up and down, his eyes nervously flickering around the room, wordlessly begging for some sort of help. Sonny got down on his knees next to Elvis, lowering his head to catch a glimpse of the singer’s face.
He almost burst into tears himself. Never had he ever seen a man so laden with sadness.
“I can’t live without her, daddy. I can’t.” Another sob wracked his body, shaking his entire form. He gagged, spit pooling in his mouth and dripping down his chin as he let out another loud cry. “We haven’t heard anything yet, Elvis. Don’t start thinkin’ the worst.” Elvis had worked his entire life to provide for his family. He had scraped his way up from the bottom to the very top, all so that he could have the means to look after those that needed to be cared for. Elvis had been good, so why would God forsake him like this? Why would he allow the one good thing in his life to be taken from him? What had he done to deserve this? What bad decision had led to all of this happening? He felt like he was cursed. Elvis leaned down, pressing his forehead against the carpet, sliding his hands and clasping them together tightly, squeezing his fingers so hard that he thought that they might break. “P-please,” He rubbed his nose against the carpet, closing his eyes tightly. “I-I’m sorry, lord. I’ll do anything.” Joe rubbed at his own teary eyes, and unable to see his friend in such a state he turned his back, respecting the man enough to give him his privacy. Sonny and Red turned their heads as well, their lips quivering as they tried not to lose their composure as well. Because Elvis wasn’t the only one that loved you. You were the golden girl. You were the breath to Elvis’s life.
“Son, I need you to try and get a hold of yourself. You’re going to make yourself sick.” Elvis sat up onto his knees, gripping at his hair and yanking as hard as he could. “I hope I do!” And he meant it. If you died, he wanted to go right along with you. He refused to live, even for a season, without you. Because he loved you, and will continue to love you- on his knees with his shoulders drawn back, showing his heels to the headsman, straining his neck- even then. Afterwards- no, even more so afterwards, he would continue to love you. Elvis always thought that you had been sent to him. You were a wish that had drifted down, landing right into his lap. You were a doe eyed angel, all wrapped up in pretty bows and tinsel. Far from being vapid, you contained the sort of depth that was known to sink ships and strand sailors. To make you happy had been reason enough to live, to continue breathing. . . but now what did he have? It felt as though the moon had completely deprived him, its glow so blinding that it blocked out even the smallest of stars that had once graced his sky; all that was left in its wake was a cold daunting darkness. Elvis had once believed that a world ending in fire would be more painful, but he had been wrong. Anything was better than the icy chill that surrounded him. Y/n L/n had completely eclipsed his heart, and without any source of warmth he was left to freeze. Self preservation be damned, Elvis couldn’t be bothered to even picture a life without you in it.
“Somebody. . . Anybody, please take me to her.” Slowly the men turned to face Vernon, silently asking for permission. Slowly the older man shook his son. “She’s in surgery, Elvis. There’s no telling how long that will take-” “I’ve left her alone for long enough. I won’t make her wait for one second more, damn it!” He was always traveling, going from one city to the next. The thought of you, unconscious or not, being left in a hospital room made him want to curl up into a ball and disappear. A part of him was tempted to do that anyway. “Joe, go ahead and take him.”
Time doesn’t exist in a hospital. In that room, your small body hooked up to all sorts of machines, Elvis had lost track of how long he had been sitting there. When staring at your face became too much for him he would look up at the ceiling, his blue eyes searching for any sort of imperfections. He found a few cracks and a few spots that appeared to be a little discolored. When he found it within himself to finally turn his attention back to you- he found none. He never had been able to find something that he didn’t like about your face or body. Every imperfection was perfection. Every freckle or mole he always made sure to kiss twice. Your smile lines reminded him of just how many times he had made you laugh over the years. Every scar on your knees or elbows was a testament to how wild and free you had been as a child. He loved everything; every ounce, every inch, every nook and cranny. The sound of your heart monitor became the only thing that kept him sane. It was the only sound that filled the room for a long while after he had stopped crying his eyes out. Seeing you all bandaged up in that hospital room, your body looking oh-so small in that cot, had been enough to force him to stumble off into the attached bathroom, vomiting up the small lunch that he had eaten on the plane ride back to Memphis. Back to you.
A few nurses and doctors had peaked their head into the room, hearing that Elvis’s wife had been administered into the hospital. He sat silent in the chair beside your bed, his nails digging into the the cheap plastic chairs as he listened to the murmuring just outside the door. “Have you heard about it? The celebrity that was admitted here yesterday? The story has been posted on just about every single news station in the U.S by now. Elvis’s wife was shot. I heard someone tried to rob the poor girl, and she got shot a few times as a result.”
The wedding ring. This was all over your stupid fucking wedding ring. You had told him that something smaller would be fine. That a diamond that big would draw too much attention and make you look greedy. He had been the one to insist on getting you the biggest diamond he could find. Had it specially made for you and everything. That had been the part of the story that tore Elvis apart when he had finally calmed down enough for Joe to tell him the truth of what happened last night.
Because you wouldn’t give it up.
You refused to hand over your wedding ring, and as a result you had been wounded. Possibly even fatally. He would have bought you a hundred other rings, did you not know that? Did you not understand how unimportant something as trivial as that was to him? If it had been smaller, like you wanted, maybe you wouldn’t have been approached. It was his fault you had been alone that night. It was his fault you were wearing that gaudy thing in the first place. It was his fault that you got shot. “M-Mr Presley?” He didn’t look up from your face, but his eyebrows twitched up as he heard his name being called from the doorway. “It’s already six o’clock. We could get you some dinner. You should eat something.” He hadn’t had anything since lunch, and the contents of his stomach had been flushed right down the toilet earlier. The thought of eating something made him feel sick all over again though. If you didn’t eat, then he wouldn’t eat either. “Not hungry.” He mumbled simply, looking down at the needles tapped to your arms. “Is she in any pain?” He finally spoke up, his voice sounded foreign to his own ears. He didn’t sound like himself. The nurse froze in the doorway, looking down at your sleeping face. “No. She’s still sleeping from the anesthesia.” At least there was that. You had been in pain though. You had been awake during the entire ambulance ride to the hospital. Elvis’s lower lip began to quiver, so he took it between his teeth, biting down hard. “I-Is she. . .” He couldn’t say the words, but it was all he had been able to think about. The nurse understood what he was trying to say, and for a second she stayed silent. “The doctor was happy with the results, but she was hurt pretty badly sir. I have faith that she’ll be okay.” Faith and hope had left him.
The nurse had told her fair share of husbands and wives about the unfortunate fate of their spouses, but never had she seen anything like this before. It was as though all of the light had drained from his eyes. He was a shell, half dead himself. “Just keep talkin’ to her,” She offered up, trying to give him something to focus on. “Give her somethin’ to keep fightin’ for.” And with that the woman backed out of the room, eager to get out of the stifling environment. Elvis could tell that she had volunteered herself to offer up dinner, wanting to get a glance at him. She had been the one speaking out in the hallway earlier. Gossiping. Maybe she expected him to carry a conversation with her. To sign a damn autograph. Everybody always wanted something from Elvis. They took and took until there was nothing left of him to give. He wasn’t blind to the fact that even his family liked to bleed him dry, but he pretended not to see. He looked the other way in fear of being alone. In fear of losing the only people that truly loved him and needed him.
But then there was you.
High school sweethearts. His beautiful doe eyed girl with a wide smile that threatened to split her cheeks. You were a jasmine scented daydream. His baby. His love. His life. You never asked for anything. Not even during the holidays. He always spoiled you rotten anyway, but you were humble like that. You were perfectly content with just living with him. Whenever he would beg you for gift ideas you would simply turn to him and smile. “You’re the only gift I need, honey.”
On your one year anniversary you had tried to cook dinner for him. You had burnt just about everything aside from the buttered rolls, and even they had turned out rock solid. He had practically licked his plate clean, and asked for seconds when he saw that you were practically in tears over your mistake. Gladys had told him the night before he had proposed that you had called her five times, making sure that you had the recipe right for the mac and cheese. The sauce had been delicious; tasted just like his mamas. You had forgotten to boil the noodles. Elvis couldn’t help but crack a smile as he remembered how he had nearly broken a tooth when he had first bit into it, but he had savored the taste. Savored the thought and love you had put into it all. He could still remember how your eyes had gone wide the second he took that first bite, hearing how loudly it crunched. It was still the most delicious thing he’d ever tasted, because your anxious little highschool-girl hands had made it for him.
“I love you,” Elvis croaked, staring down at your face. “And I’m not goin’ anywhere. I-I did it. . . I fired the Colonel, just like you wanted. I don’t ever want to step foot in Las Vegas again.” The only reason he hadn’t taken you was because he knew he was only going to be gone for the day, and that things might get ugly. He had quit on the spot. You would have been proud of him for standing up for himself the way that he did. “I think we should fly far away. Wherever you want to go, baby.” He reached out his hand, his fingers gently brushing against your arm. You felt cold. He swallowed back the bile that was threatening to climb its way up his throat. “I think I might die if you leave me. So I need you to wake up and look at me with those great big eyes of yours, beautiful.” He wasn’t sure how he had any tears left to cry, but he tasted salt on his tongue as he spoke. “Remember that promise you made me in eleventh grade? You told me that you’d let me pass first. You’d stick around and follow me right after.” He lurched forward, placing his elbows against the bed as a sob wracked his body. He felt too weak to sit up straight anymore. He wasn’t sure he had much strength left in him. “Damn it, baby. You promised.” He hiccuped, clutching at your hand and pressing it against his chest. “You’ve never lied to me before, so don’t start doin’ it now. Please. Please don’t go.”
He wasn’t sure how long he stayed like that, hunched over you, his hand clutching at yours as though he could somehow tether you to him. ‘Take me’, he begged. Pleaded. Prayed. He felt like he hadn’t done anything lasting with his life. He didn’t do too much that he could be proud of with his career. But being with you was the one thing he could look back on and truly feel fulfilled with. You two had stayed true to each other, even through all your teenage angst. You two had never fallen out of love. Had never gone to bed angry. He couldn’t remember a single time that he hadn’t kissed you goodnight. You were his greatest achievement. His soaring victory.
“Wherever you go, I’ll follow,” He finally spoke up after what felt like hours. “I’ll be so close that if you hold out your hand, you’ll reach me.”

Diner Girl – Joe Keery
Tumblr media
Joe walked into the diner and smiled when no one even noticed him. He was about to sit down but he looked around the room, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. He couldn't help but feel disappointed when he didn't see her.
She was the whole reason he came to this mom-and-pop diner. The first time he saw her, she was reading a book and drinking coffee. He could still remember the smile on her face when the waitress brought her burger. He could still remember how she used an old picture as a bookmark and how she put her book safely back in her bag when the waitress brought her food.
After about a week, Joe figured out that the girl came here every day for lunch. She worked as a fashion magazine editor nearby and used the diner to get away from the busy buzz of the fashion world. She loved the diner because she used to come here with her parents every Friday. Her dad worked at a factory nearby, so she and her mother would meet him here for lunch. She loved coming here because it reminded her of when life was simpler.
Of course, Joe only knew this because he overheard her talking to the head waitress, Gertrude.
He walked over and sat at the bar, still looking around to make sure he hadn't missed her when he walked in.
"Welcome back, Joe." He looked up to see Gertrude walking out of the kitchen and toward him. "She's not here yet," she said with a knowing look. Joe opened his mouth to say something but Gertrude just laughed. "She should be here soon, though."
"I wasn't. . . I mean. . . Who?"
"Oh, sweetie," she sighed. "I know you don't come here for the greasy fries and the overpriced burgers. You come here for that sweet girl."
As she said that, she pointed behind Joe at the door. He turned around, his breath getting stuck in his throat when he saw Y/N walking in. He glanced over at Gertrude to see her smirking at him. His stomach dropped when she sent him a wink.
"Hey, cute girl," she said to get Y/N's attention. "Why don't you sit right here, beautiful?"
As she pointed to a seat on the bar just a couple of bar stools away from Joe, she sent him a look.
"Thanks, Gertie," Y/N chuckled. Joe's heart jumped into his throat as she smiled. Joe loved to watch her smile. He wished that he was the reason for that smile.
His stomach dropped when Y/N's perfect smile faded.
"You okay, sweet girl?" Gertrude asked, reaching across the bar and grabbing Y/N's hands.
"I'm fine," Y/N said, not at all convincingly. "It's just. . . Work."
Gertrude smiled sadly as she squeezed Y/N's hands. "Why don't I get you a cup of tea? On the house."
Before Gertrude left to get her some tea, she glanced at Joe. Joe looked at Y/N to see her playing with her nails. He wanted nothing more than to run to her, wrap her in his arms, listen to her vent about her job, and tell her everything was going to be okay.
Joe ate his lunch, forcing himself to resist the urge to stare at Y/N. He rehearsed what he could say to her several times, but nothing sounded smooth enough.
"Can you pass me the mustard?"
Joe froze when he realized she was talking to him. He turned towards her to see her smiling and pointing at the mustard in front of him.
"This one is all out," she continued.
"Of course," he stuttered. He cleared his throat and grabbed the mustard bottle. He was about to hand it to her when he got an idea. He wasn't sure if this was a good idea or dorky, but he did it anyway.
He put the mustard back on the counter and slid it over to her. He held his breath as he waited for Y/N's response. He let out a sigh of relief when she giggled. She caught the mustard and winked at him.
"Thanks."
"My name's Joe," he blurted out before she could turn her attention back to her burger.
"Y/N," she greeted.
"I have to be honest," Joe stuttered, "this might be weird but I umm. . . I've seen you here before."
"That's not weird," she chuckled. "I'm here every day. And if it makes you feel better, I recognize you."
"You do?" Joe couldn't help but ask.
"Of course," she said instantly. "I recognized you instantly, Steve Harrington."
Joe could feel his face burning when she teased him. Usually, he hated it when someone recognized him and called him Steve Harrington. But when Y/N did it, his stomach flipped.
"If I'm being honest, I hated that role at first," Joe confessed.
"Really?" Y/N asked. "Sure, it was rough, but that first season set Steve up for an amazing character arc. I mean, he is the definition of character development."
Y/N suddenly stopped talking, her face turning red. "Sorry," she mumbled. "That was extremely embarrassing."
"It wasn't," Joe tried to reassure her. He gathered as much courage as he could before he said, "Do you wanna join me?"
"I'd love to," she said sweetly as she smiled at him. Joe cleared his throat trying to get rid of the sudden lump as she grabbed her food and scooted over onto the bar stool next to him.
Joe and Y/N spent the next hour, eating their food and talking to each other. The longer they talked, the harder Joe fell. They talked about Joe's career and the different roles he's had. They talked about Y/N's career. Apparently, her boss was crazy and was constantly making her jump through hoops. She was starting to get tired of it.
"This probably isn't my place," he said hesitantly, "but have you thought about quitting?"
"I can't," she sighed. "I've got bills to pay and rent and car insurance and. . . I need a job."
"I'm sorry," he said gently. "I wish there was something I could do."
"It's not your fault," she said softly. She smiled as she added, "But thank you, Joe."
Joe's heart sank when she looked at the watch on her wrist. "Speaking of which," she sighed, "I should be getting back. I had a lot of fun though."
"Me too," Joe said, his stomach going crazy. He cleared his throat and added, "Good luck at work."
"Thanks," she said, sending him a knowing look. "I'll need all the luck I can get."
Joe bit his lip when she gently put her hand on his shoulder and squeezed. "See you around, Harrington."
"Hey, Y/N?" Joe said before she could leave. When she turned around, he forgot what he was going to say. When he remembered, he cleared his throat. "I was wondering if you'd like to go get dinner sometime?"
"Really?"
"Really," he said, hoping her question wasn't one of anger or scoffing. "I really enjoyed talking to you and I'd love to get to know you better."
"I'd love to get to know you better, too," she smiled. Y/N reached into her bag and handed him her work card.
"Call me."
"I will," he said before he could stop himself. "I will definitely call you."
"I'll be waiting."

Part 2.
It had been a whole month since you and Joe had parted ways that unforgettable night, regrettably that was the last time you'd seen him when you left him sobbing on the ground. You'd moped around both at home and work, not putting your all into anything, the memory of the whole event just repeating in your mind over and over again. Of course, he'd still tried messaging you in the first couple of weeks but that died down the more you ignored, you just simply couldn't move on from the hurtful words or painful gestures; even just the thought of his ex-girlfriend made you want to hurl your organs out of your mouth, it'd clearly broken your heart.
You'd got no plans this weekend, other than to lay in your own filth and watch a string of senseless romantic comedies, a thing you tended to hate to love right now. Your phone buzzed at the side of you, glancing down it was your best friend calling, putting your device up to your ear you took a deep breath in and put your brave voice on.
"Hey girl, you alright?"
"Yes, just wondering if you were, haven't heard from you in days and was making sure that you're still living."
"Just had a lot on my plate, you know this." The brave voice slowly disappearing.
"Well, I hate to drop this on you." She purely didn't hate to do anything. "But we're going out tonight and you can't say no, you need to let your hair down and forget that idiot for one night at least." The idiot comment was her insinuating Joe in a rather nice tone, just due to the fact she was holding in her rage for what he did and the other reason that was she just didn't want to give you any ammunition to decline.
"I don't know honey, I'm nowhere near the stages of getting ready."
"I'll be round in half an hour, and we'll get you looking hot."
She gave you no room to get a word in, hung up the phone and you scoffed, throwing your phone down to your feet where you laid and rubbed your hands over your face. Looks like you're going out tonight.
Tumblr media
Your best friend did just as she said she would, you felt good about yourself for the first time in a while, the drinks you'd shared and the shots you knocked back at your flat gave you your initial new happier and confident feeling. She'd suggested your favourite nightclub whilst you got ready, it only took the name of it to prick up your ears and grab your attention; you were ready for tonight.
The booming of the music got closer as you got to the doors of the club and you could've jumped up and down like an excited child, you were ready to drink yourself silly, sing and dance with your main girl like a loon. You'd worry about the inevitable depression hangover tomorrow. The first point of call was tequila shots, the second was the buy one get one free offer on any cocktail of your choice from the menu, the thing with cocktails is that you don't feel it at first and then the next thing you know you're on the floor.
Little did you know that you were instantly sighted by Joe's best friend, he'd obviously had the same idea in taking him out whilst he had some free time to make him feel better also and it oh so happened that you were in the same place on the same damn night. Your friend dragged you to the dancefloor once you'd got your beverages. Your guilty pleasure Taylor Swift hit the speakers and the relatable lyrics of I knew you were trouble filled the entirety of your lungs, you sang your heart out to the song, feeling every moment of it.
Joe's best friend had done his best to keep him well away from seeing you but being at least 3 metres away from each other probably didn't help when he heard your friend yell your name laughing at the way you were dramatically yelling the song, she filmed the memory well and truly, your hand to your heart as you held your drink into the air, intentionally meaning every word. Joe whipped his head round to find you immediately, his chest was puffing in and out, heart ached excruciatingly, his lungs were in pain not able to get a proper breath out, his body had become stone, not moving his stance whilst he watched you with tears heavily filling his eyelids.
Not more than a moment later, he felt a sudden mild burst of anger hit him when he saw a guy attempting to dance behind you then leaning over to speak in your ear. Interrupting your dancing, you laughed it off and shook your head at the guy who'd asked you if he could buy you a drink. The male wouldn't leave well enough alone and wouldn't take no for an answer, you tried ignoring him to see if it'd make him give up, it didn't work.
The guy grabbed you by your waist and pulled you into him, trying to convince you further to let him do as he'd originally asked, his intentions clear as you felt that of a vulgar press of his crotch against your stomach. You gagged in his face on his purpose, you weren't out looking for a hook up and he knew that it just pursued his want further for you.
Joe was foaming at the mouth and the moment he heard you shout at him to fuck off was the moment Joe moved at a deadly pace through the few people between you and jumped the guy to the ground, punching him square in the jaw. You couldn't believe your eyes; you didn't want to believe what you were seeing was real. Joe had been positioned to the floor now, being dragged forcefully whilst the male took a swing at his face, a small circle forming in the middle of the dancefloor, egging them both on further. You yelled out Joe's name telling them both to stop, your instant reaction was to try and tear them apart, but Joe's best friend heaved for your arm bringing you back as the security guards dragged them to their feet by the scruffs of their neck.
The two heavily built men caught sight of your fearful face and asked what had happened, you pointed out at the stranger "He started it, he wouldn't leave me alone and my friend came into help me." Friend. You may as well had called him a stranger too, that might have made the suffering of the word easier. Calling him that almost felt good, a moment of succession for you in a way. You said it clear enough for Joe to hear you, a dagger to his heart just as it had been to you when he'd named you his close friend to her.
They let Joe go and took the other guy out of the club, warning him not to bother trying to get back in. Then there it was, you and Joe face to face properly after the first time in a month, the longest most torturing month of both your lives. Joe rubbed his hand under his nose where he bled slightly from, the darkness in his eyes from the rage of the moment was now returning to his soft brown stature. You heaved your chest, staring back at him, ignoring everything and everyone in your path as you walked away in a huff.
You sat on the ledge in the busy smoking area, pulling a cigarette to your lips and lighting it, puffing as hard as your lungs could bare. Your best friend gave Joe an earful but slowly calmed down when she declared for him to go out and attempt to talk to you, that was if you'd listen. You noticed the top of Joe's untamed curls emerging out of the double doors and at once you turned to the side, moving your head and whole body to the opposite side of the door; he still spotted you though hunched up on the ledge by yourself. Joe plucked up the courage to sit down next to you, leaning down slightly cupping his hands together between his spread thighs. All but silence between the two of you at first until he spoke up.
"Y/N, are you going to give me a chance to at least make my peace with you? I-"
You cut him off, swinging around to meet his gaze, almost crashing into his arm, you'd underestimated how close he already was sat next to you. "A chance to make peace? Are you fucking kidding me?" The question was almost laughable.
"I gathered you meant what you said about never speaking again when you ignored my calls and messages, but I can't just leave it where it ended, it's not in me to do that at all."
"I'm pretty sure it was in you when you outright called me a close friend to your ex, proceeded to tell me to stop being a bitch and basically caught her mouth with yours. Was all that an accident to? Or are you still blind to her bullshit." Joe furrowed his brows at you, his head internally screaming. Yes, he knew it was all his fault.
"I'm terrified of her Y/N. I said it because deep down I clearly knew her aim at the time and I just-"
A girl interrupted the two of yours now becoming heated debate, she looked really excited as she stared down at Joe. You looked up as she spoke out. "Oh my god, are you Joseph Quinn?" Joe put his best poker face on, his profession coming into full force as he pulled a toothy grin at the girl. "Yes, hi." She screeched at his answer. You folded your arms watching the two of them speak, not quite jealous but this wasn't the time for this to be happening. The girl looked at you "would you mind taking a photo of us please?" You squeezed your eyes shut and then put a fake smile onto the both of them, standing up to take her phone and took the photo she so solely desired in that moment. She thanked you both, hugging Joe and left, you both sat back in your original positions facing one another.
"As I was saying, you backed down to her like a submissive puppy. You're 28 years old, do you not think acting like you probably did as a teenager is a bit much?" Joe was highly defeated by your statement; he was at a loss for words.
"That's what I thought."
Yet another duo of fans stood before him, intruding once more. He didn't want to seem like a bad person, typical Joe, so he took his attention to them. You clearly weren't getting any further and you'd had enough of it all for one night, sure you still loved him with all your heart and that's what didn't help the situation, you wanted to forgive him and believe that it was a mistake, but Joe's lack of actions proved otherwise.
You got up and left him with the girls, not turning back and finding your friend with Joe's talking at a table. "I'm going to get a taxi home; I really just want to go to sleep and forget this whole night." Your best friend hugged you. "Do you want me to come with?"
"No stop out, I just want to be alone, I'll text you once I'm back." You exchanged your goodbyes giving all but a subtle wave and smile to Joe's friend before you left the club. You walked to the taxi rank, waiting for a vehicle to pull up to take you back to your safe place when you heard an unpleasant and familiar voice shout you from across the street.
"Aw hi Y/N." You looked around to meet the redhead, looking smug and highly unattractive in her body language. His. Fucking. Ex. Really? Could this night get any worse?
You slowly blinked at her, no response to her unwelcomed greeting at all. "What's up with you, you still bitter about last month?"
You snorted a laugh in her face. "How dare you even think you're worth a breath from my lungs, you silly cow." You pushed her slightly, squaring right up into her face; you weren't willing to take another word from the girl and she was shaken, probably down to the fact that any girl that she had been out to ruin with Joe never stood up to her. "A lowlife, disgusting little slut like you should've been taught a lesson a long time ago." You slapped her clean across her cheek and watched her grimace at the sting it caused. A small, fulfilled smile creeping onto your face. Joe had quickly caught up behind you, stopping in his tracks, watching as you struck her, he also noticed how she didn't hit you back. He made the effort to drag himself over, watching you eye each other back and forth like a pair ready to go to war.
Your eyes flitted over to Joe and so did hers, putting her best whiny voice on. "Oh my god Joe, she attacked me, she's an absolute psychopath, did you see it? Did you?"
Joe said nothing, eyeing between you both, proving your point again quite rightly, that was until she tried to embrace him into a hug, and he harshly shoved her away from him. "What the fuck is wrong with you? I've given you the benefit of the doubt maybe a couple of times in my life but then you just took it next level, I've always been afraid to be myself around you. Until now. I don't want anything more to do with you, you've ruined my life for the last time." He spoke his home truth like it had been a speech he'd been practicing for weeks. Your mouth gaped open; you couldn't believe what you'd just heard.
She did nothing but huff at Joe and turned back to you. "You'll leave if you know what's good for you." you stated before she could get a word in. "Is that a threat?" she barked nervous laughter, her confidence clearly belittled but still trying to remain intact. "It's a promise." Joe interrupted your final face off.
"She changed you Joe, you used to be so, so-"
"So, your little bitch? maybe. But this is the last time you'll put a foot in my relationship, do you not realise every time I got a girlfriend or even as much as looked at anyone other than you, you'd break it up without even a second thought, I've let you get away with it for 13 years too long, I should've cut you off the moment we broke up." He turned to you, "that's why I referred to you the way I did that night Y/N, purely because I wasn't blind to her intentions anymore." You looked to the ground, almost humiliated by your thoughts.
"So that's it, you cut me out completely?" she raised her voice at Joe, and he nodded vigorously back at her. "I might not get Y/N back from this, but at least she'll know that I got you out of my life for good, you're an absolute headache now get out of my sight."
She stomped her foot to the ground, nothing clearly more to be said and walked away as she should of long before. You took a glance at a proud Joe, and you must admit you were somewhat also elated for him for finally standing up for himself even if it was almost little too late for it. You turned and walked the other way.
"Y/N, where are you going?"
"Home." you shouted back. You took a curtsy at Joe and applauded. "Well done for being all done with her and shit but I don't know if that's enough for me to forgive you anymore."
Joe sped up his feet to grab your arm, swinging you round to look at him. "Do you still love me?"
"Joe."
His hands gripped into your arms now, holding you in place. "Do you still love me Y/N?"
Tears filled your eyes hard as they fell once you blinked, your lips trembled but you didn't try to escape his grasp, his touch was all too familiar and wonderful, you'd missed it.
With a sigh you admitted. "Yes."
"Then one last kiss, goodbye. Please, I know I'm not in a position to beg you for anything, but I need to feel it one last time." He was right, you owed him nothing, but you couldn't stop your feet from raising onto your tiptoes, holding onto his forearms for support as you leaned in to kiss him, it was short and forceful but desperate as your emotions clearly played on it.
You broke the kiss, watching as Joe's tears mirrored yours. "I love you too. I'm so sorry for everything I did and everything she did too. I'm sorry for hurting you, I'm sorry for not speaking my mind sooner. I'm sorry for ruining what we had in a few words, I'm sorry for giving her the ammunition to break what we had. Most of all, I'm sorry that we have to say goodbye." You couldn't deny his apologies were nothing short of admirable, he'd owned up to everything in one breath.
Your already broken heart could not fathom anymore pain that it already held. You were crazy for your next action, your arms finding the back of his neck as you pulled him back into a needy, open-mouthed kiss. His greedy hands pushed at the bottom of your back to keep you as close as he possibly could. If this truly was the last time, you'd feel one another then you'd make it something to remember.
You were by no means a pushover, but your thoughts overtook you whilst you shared the mutual enjoyment of the kiss, you wondered if giving him a last chance wasn't completely off the table. Your parents had taught you in your life to forgive but not forget until it was absolutely necessary too. You were in no state of mind to get over this man in a hurry and it seemed he wasn't either.
Your mouths parted, but you remained in position, your foreheads pressing together, out of breath from the heated smooch. "Y/N- I" you took a hand from his neck and placed it onto his lips, stopping him from saying another word until you had finished yours. "I'm not ready to say goodbye, it will take a lot of time and effort but if you're willing, there's a last chance being offered to you here and now. Take it or leave it, I just love you so much and I can't stand not having you around, even if it is as your 'close friend'."
Yet another stab at his heart as you brought up his once spoken words again, but he understood. He slowly nodded at you, removing your hand to see a small smile forming against his swollen pink lips. "I will do anything for that chance, my love. I can't lose you."
He pecked at your lips for the third time. "You've got a lot of work to do, Quinn." You edged a smile back to him.
"I've already started." He gestured his head backward to the place you were stood earlier with his ex-girlfriend, he let go of you and lifted you off your feet, carrying you in his arms.
"What are you doing?" you chuckled.
His eyes shut for a second, taking in the warmth of your voice.
"Giving you no reason to doubt me, yours or mine?"
"Yours." you arched the top of your head to rest in the crook of his neck as you held onto him. Your first and last fight truly ending.

Tumblr media
————————————————————————-
Summary: A sweet Valentine's Day surprise trip from your boyfriend Joe turns into one of the most important days of your life.
(Part one to - Part 2)
Warnings: pure sickening fluff
Pairing: Joe Burrow x reader
————————————————————————-
February 13th, 2024
(y/n’s pov)
Waking up on the day before Valentine’s Day alone in bed is never fun, especially when it's just 4 days after Joe and I’s 7th anniversary as a couple. The reason the day before was special was that Joe and I were celebrating today, Joe said he was super busy tomorrow with foundation stuff and we needed to celebrate today.
Joe had already told me last night that he was still going to work out this morning but instead would opt for our home gym. Still, the last thing I'd want to do is bother him.
Spending the alone time wisely, I didn't stay in bed too long and took a relaxing shower. Afterward, I did my normal skincare routine and put some light makeup on.
Once that was finished the next step was slicking my hair back into a tight bun and getting dressed.
As of right now, Joe and I don't have plans to leave the house so I put some leggings on and grabbed my favorite one of Joe’s sweatshirts, and put it on.
It was his pink Nike sweatshirt that was my favorite one ever since I hugged him when he wore it for the first time. It was so soft so I've been stealing it out of his laundry since.
After brushing my teeth and making the bed, I went downstairs to make breakfast.
To my surprise, when I walked into the kitchen there was already a whole spread of breakfast foods on a longboard charcuterie-style.
My heart warmed as I looked at the collection of baked goods, savories, and different juices.
When I picked up a blueberry muffin there was a white envelope underneath it.
I put it down for a second to quickly pour a glass of pink lemonade.
Picking it up to read the front a smile spread on my lips when it said “Joe” with a little heart.
I quickly opened the envelope and pulled the small note card out.
Happy Valentine's, Baby!
I'm probably still working out as you're reading this (gotta have big muscles to fight off guys that hit on you). But anyway… how'd I know that you were going to get a blueberry muffin out of all that food I put out?? I'll tell ya. It's because I know you like the back of my hand. I'm gonna guess right now that you're going to pick strawberry lemonade out of all of the drinks I put out.
This isn't the first little surprise either, I've got lots of things up my sleeves and in my pockets to make today the best Valentine's Day ever.
The best of my love, Joey
The little note had me smiling from ear to ear and I was so deep in a trance that I didn't hear Joe behind me. I jumped when two strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind but the familiar laugh coming from behind put me immediately at ease.
“Startle ya?” - Joe
“My gosh, Joe! Yes!” - you
I turned around in his arms and placed my hands on his chest, looking up into his gorgeous blue eyes.
“Did I guess right?” - Joe smiled
Nodding my head in the direction of my muffin and glass of pink lemonade I grinned as Joe’s cheeks deepened a shade of red.
“You know me so well.” - you
“Well, I hope that I know you a little bit after seven years together.” - Joe laughed
“Seven years is a long time…” - you
“It is, isn't it? Does it ever surprise you that we have lasted this long?” - Joe
“Oh gosh no. You're my best friend, can't live without you. Does it ever surprise you?” - you
“No. The rest of my life is with you.” - Joe grinned
I jokingly scoffed and Joe’s face turned to confusion.
“Not officially, last time I checked my left hand was empty.” - you held your bare left hand in front of his face
Joe’s lips formed a straight line as he glared at me. His facial expression made me giggle before I leaned in to kiss is soft lips.
“I’m kidding, Joe. You know I seriously don't care if and when it happens.” - you
“If?! What do you mean if it happens?! It's sure as hell going to happen, I don't care if it's the last thing I do. Who knows, it might be happening sooner than you think.” - Joe
“You said that last Valentine’s.” - you laughed
“Oh, whatever. I have to go shower but expect another surprise in a few minutes.” - Joe
“Ok…” - you
Joe kissed my cheek and unwrapped his arms from me. I couldn't help but watch him walk away because of how borderline delicious he looked wearing his cut-off Nike top with shorts.
Just as Joe was out of my sight the doorbell rang. Woah he wasn't joking, I thought.
I immediately walked to the door and thanked the delivery man after he handed me the substantial bouquet of beautiful red roses.
There was a vase that was my go-to for when Joe got me flowers but after a quick analysis, I came to the realization that there was no way they would all fit.
After placing them on the counter I was examining the huge arrangement when I realized there was yet again another small white envelope.
What it said was short but so sweet, making my heart swell even more.
For our one-month anniversary a few weeks short of seven years ago, I gave you a singular red rose. Here’s eighty-four roses for every month you've been my girl.
The best of my love, Joe
He must be in a sentimental nostalgic mood this Valentine's because though Joe is secretly a raging romantic, I've never seen him go to such great lengths as this.
When I went to put the card back in its stand, it fell and I realized there was writing on the back as well.
P.S. Go get my card from my wallet, a new nail set on me. There's a surprise waiting for you there, and maybe a few more afterward…
What is this man up to??
I went upstairs, and grabbed Joe’s card before grabbing my purse, putting shoes on, and heading to my favorite nail salon.
When I arrived the front desk lady offered me a warm smile and I sent one right back.
“Miss y/n! We've been expecting you. Go ahead and head back.” - Lady
“I don't have to pick a color?” - you
“Your boyfriend prepicked a color, nail type, and everything. You're all set!” - Lady
“Oh okay! Thanks!” - you
As soon as I walked over to my go-to station I noticed a familiar face already sitting there.
“Aubrey?!” - you
“Hey girl!” - Aubrey jumped up
Aubrey was my roommate at Ohio State and has been my best friend ever since. She had moved to California after college to pursue her career as a doctor.
“What are you doing in Cincinnati?” - you hugged her
“Mmm, a certain someone invited me down here…” - Aubrey smiled
“Joe?” - you smiled, immediately thinking about Joe’s letter on your roses
“Maybe.” - Aubrey smirked
“What is he up to?! Do you know? He's been acting so… romantic today.” - you laughed
“Hard to tell. I don't know what he's up to, but he has a nail request that he's also paying for so let's get down to business.” - Aubrey
——
A couple of hours later I had nice oval French tips and Aubrey got solid sage green coffin nails.
We went up to the counter and I handed the lady Joe’s card. She smiled up at me and gave me a wink.
“Your boy has taste.” - Lady
“That he does.” - you giggled and looked at your nails
She laughed as she handed me the card back but she held up a finger telling me to wait. I watched the woman reach under the counter to retrieve yet another white envelope.
When she handed it to me I couldn't help but gasp and quickly rip it open to see what was inside. It was a note and read…
Go down to Kroger with Aubs and get your favorite road trip snacks… you'll need it. ;)
I hope you like your nails, I tried my best to explain what I wanted.
The best of my love, Joe.
Aubrey was reading the note along with me over my shoulder and when we were both done we looked at each other with wide eyes.
You didn't know of course, but Aubrey has known Joe’s plan for weeks so she knew this was happening.
“Aubrey what the heck is he doing?! - you
She just shrugged so I thanked the front desk lady and practically sprinted to the car with Aubrey.
“I’m so confused.” - you
“I know just as much as you, let's get to the store to get your snacks though.” - Aubrey
——
I tried to make the Kroger trip as quick as possible because all I wanted was to get back home to Joe and find out what was going on.
Aubrey asked me to drop her off at the hotel she was staying at since she got an Uber to the nail salon.
After dropping her off, I headed straight for home.
“Joe!” - you called out as you made it through the front door
“Upstairs!” - Joe
I practically ran up the stairs and into our bedroom.
When I did, my heart stopped when my eyes scanned the room.
There were probably over 30 heart-shaped balloons that had floated up to the ceiling and multiple huge bags sitting on our made bed.
Joe was standing to the side of the room looking incredibly cute in his usual sweatpants and t-shirt combo while he wore a bashful grin.
“What is all of this?” - you
“Just another step in my master plan of putting this year's Valentine's Day down in history.” - Joe
I walked up to him and immediately pulled him into my embrace, my head on his built chest as we rubbed each other's backs.
“What are you up to Mr?” - you smiled
“You’ll see. Open your gifts!” - Joe grinned
Walking over to sit on the bench in front of the bed, Joe handed me the first gift bag.
We grinned at each other as I pulled the tissue paper out of the bag. It revealed a shoe box that said “UGG” and I immediately gasped.
They were the Tasman’s that I had been wanting for a while. I had briefly mentioned them when another WAG had them on and I complimented them, turns out Joe was paying attention.
“Thank you! They're so cute.” - you
“You’ll be needing them later today, you know something comfy. And speaking of comfy…” - Joe handed you another bag
I removed the tissue paper and a cute sweat set was revealed.
“Pastel orange, Joe?” - you giggled
“Orange looks good on you!” - Joe
“You’ve said that multiple times, honey.” - you
Joe just smiled at me and took the empty bags off the bed to put them in a pile by the door. He also grabbed the UGG box and sweat set to neatly stack them on the bench in front of the bed.
“Why are you waiting? Open your last gifts, baby!” - Joe
“I’m waiting for you Mr. to tell me which one to open!” - you
“This one.” - Joe grabbed a bag and handed it to you
I reached down into the bag and my fingertips brushed against a smaller box. Giving Joe a skeptical look, he returned my look with a sweet smile.
When I finally looked down inside my heart stopped when I noticed the familiar Cartier packaging.
“Joe… what did you do? This was probably so expensive.” - you
“Stop that, I love spending my money to spoil you. You know that. Just open it.” - Joe
His gaze was convincing so I took the box into my hands and flicked the lid off.
They were the most gorgeous earrings I'd ever seen. The White Gold, Diamond LOVE earrings.
“Joe… they're beautiful.” - you
“Yeah? Do you like ‘em? They're the matching earrings to the bracelet I got you for Christmas. I've had ‘em since them but I didn't give them to you at the same time to avoid ‘you spend too much on me’ speech.” - Joe
“If you keep it up with the white gold and diamonds Imma be more shiesty than you.” - you giggled
“That’s 100% my plan. Gotta keep my girl iced out.” - Joe grinned
I walked forward and immediately wrapped my arms around my boyfriend.
“I love you so much. Thank you so much for everything.” - you kissed his lips
“Aye not so fast. You've got one more gift.” - Joe
Joe unwrapped one of his arms from my waist and reached into the final gift bag. He pulled out a white envelope and smiled brightly when he handed it to me.
“Saved the best for last.” - Joe
“Better than those earrings?! Did you get me a puppy??” - you
“No! No puppy.” - Joe laughed
I backed away from him to open it and my mouth dropped open when I pulled out two plane tickets.
“Where are we going??” - you
“Read the tickets.” - Joe
My eyes frantically searched the tickets and I slapped Joe’s arm out of pure excitment when the destination of my dream getaway was printed on the sheet of paper.
“Shut up! I’m going to Portofino?!” - you yelled
“You’re going to Portofino, Italy!” - Joe
I practically lept at Joe and wrapped my legs around his waist, my arms around his neck.
“Thank you! Thank you!” - you yelled into his neck
A thought popped into my mind that made my heart sink and I pulled away from Joe’s neck to confirm or deny my disappointing thought.
“Wait… you're going with me, right?” - you
“Yes, baby. I'm going with you.” - Joe laughed
“Yay! My dream vacay with my favorite person ever.” - you smiled
“Are you excited?” - Joe
“Am I excited?! Joe, I'm ecstatic! I've been dreaming about going there since I was in high school. I can't wait to mark this one off my bucket list… especially with you.” - you
“Good. I'm happy to be there with you.” - Joe
——
“Do you have everything packed??” - Joe
“Yup!” - you
I rolled my suitcase out of the closet and into our bedroom where Joe was sitting on the bed waiting.
“I was going to pack everything for you… but I realized I can't pack everything you need, cause I have no idea.” - Joe
Laughing at him as I wheeled the suitcase to him, I quickly came up with a response.
“You can't pack it but you can use those muscles to carry it to the car.” - you winked
Joe grinned as he flexed his arms, I had to hype him up and it never failed to surprise me with how deep the blush went.
He left the room shortly after to take my suitcase down to the car and I did a final walkthrough of the house to make sure all lights were off, we had everything we needed, and nothing was left running.
When I finally got outside the site of Joe headbanging slowly while biting his lip through the front glass of the car made me internally giggle as I rounded the side and plopped in the front passenger seat.
“Do we have to listen to Kid Cudi?” - you
“I thought you liked him?” - Joe
“I do. But we listen to him all of the time.” - you
“Fine. You pick.” - Joe sighed and handed you his phone to play a song on Spotify.
Naturally, I pulled up my go-to playlist and shuffled it. The first song that played was Nat King Cole’s “L-0-V-E”.
I of course was yelling along the lyrics while Joe just shook his head with a playful grin.
“This song is boring.” - Joe
“You think so? It reminds me of us.” - you
“Why? Because it's boring? Are you calling us boring?” - Joe
“No, you goofball. Because it says ‘love was made for me and you’ and I think that it was.” - you
“I think it was too.” - Joe grinned and laced your fingers with his
——
“Was that whole playlist just old love songs? Or are you in a vintage gushy mood?” - Joe
I thought back to the songs that had played previously…
Can’t Take My Eyes off You by Frankie Valli, Everybody Loves Somebody by Dean Martin, Everlasting Love by Natalie Cole…
“Uhm… yes.” - you
“Yes, to which one, baby?” - Joe laughed
“Both!” - you
“Did I put you In a gushy love song mood?” - Joe
“Yeah… maybe you did. You've been so romantic today.” - you
Joe grinned at me while he squeezed my hand and the next time we were at a red light he leaned over to kiss me.
“I have a feeling that every trip we take from here on out isn't going to top this.” - Joe
“I already know they're not! I'm so excited. Thank you so much, Joe.” - you
“You’re so welcome, but just wait till you see what I have planned throughout the trip.” - Joe
“Ok, I still can't believe you planned a whole International trip with your homebody ways, Joseph Lee.” - you
“I didn't do it by myself. I got help from a lot of people. My mom helped, Aubrey, some guys on the team, your parents, and maybe or maybe not the team’s travel advisor.” - Joe
“Baby, that's so sweet.” - you
“It needs to be perfect…” - Joe sighed
“I think it will be. Can I ask you something?” - you
“Yup.” - Joe
“Why’d you get my nails done?” - you
“Uhm… because we're probably going to take pictures and you had said multiple times your old set was busted. Thought you might want to get new ones.” - Joe
I reached over and put my hand on Joe’s arm, lightly scratching his skin with my nails while I smiled brightly at him.
“I love you.” - you
“I love you too, babe.” - Joe
——
We arrived at the airport and to my confusion someone was there to escort us. The tall male with a bodyguard build led us through an area adjacent from the regular airport and before I knew it Joe and I were standing in front of a jet.
“What did you do?!” - you
“Wanna fly in a private jet?” - Joe grinned
After we handed our bags and suitcases to part of the crew, I was standing there astounded so Joe took my hand and guided me up the steps.
“This is incredible… how much did this cost to fly us there?” - you frowned slightly
“My love, money is not something we have to worry about.” - Joe winked with a cocky grin on his lips
I had changed into my sweat set, UGGs, and put my new earrings in before we left the house and I swore sometimes I would catch Joe’s eyes lingering to the substantial diamonds on my ears.
Eventually, we made it inside the jet and it was even nicer inside than it was outside. The lighting was warm and the leather seats were astonishing.
“You like it?” - Joe
“I love it, and I love you.” - you pecked Joe’s cheek
Joe put a hand on the small of my back and gently moved me in the direction of a chair.
After sitting down, Joe took his spot across from me, a table in between us and I propped my feet up on his lap.
He slipped my UGGs off and gently put them on the floor before he started massaging my feet.
It was the little things that Joe did that made me praise him for being the best boyfriend ever, and he never failed to hold himself to that title.
“You comfy?” - Joe
“Very.” - you smiled
“We have a long ride ahead of us so hopefully we can take a nap at some point.” - Joe
I nodded and the flight attendant walked over to us to explain a few things. Due to the fact Joe is an avid hater of PDA I was expecting Joe to drop my foot when she walked over, but he didn't. He listened to her intently as he continued rubbing small comforting circles on my foot.
Joe had a few questions about the lunch and dinner menu but eventually, she walked away.
“You have absolutely spoiled me today, I don't know how it can get much better.” - you
“Just you wait.” - Joe winked
——
February 14th, 2024 - *Actual* Valentine's Day
When we finally arrived in Portofino it was early morning the next day, Joe and I were pretty exhausted.
Despite being jet-lagged and tired, the drive to the Airbnb was absolutely beautiful.
The different colored buildings and the water were some of the most breathtaking sites I'd ever laid eyes on. I had to look back at Joe who was sitting next to me in the back of the car just to verify he could see it too.
“It's beautiful…” - you
“It is, isn't it?” - Joe smiled
He was so in love with you, so obsessed with pleasing you that he’d do anything just to see that twinkle in your eye when you see something you love. When you looked back at him he saw that twinkle and he hoped that it wasn't just coming from the gorgeous surroundings, but also because of him.
You were still looking out of the car window but suddenly he felt a hand on his thigh. When he looked down he saw your fingers making grabby motions and when he laced his fingers with yours, they were at ease. Even with the view in front of you, you still reached for him behind.
The Airbnb was even more breathtaking. Joe, in the most broken Italian accent I'd ever heard, told me it was called the Baia degli Ulivi.
It was a pretty pink color with forest green shutters and a beautiful balcony view.
Joe and I sat our bags down when we got inside because he said he wanted to show me around.
I could tell that Joe was proud of himself for picking such a ravishing place for us to stay.
He was so adorable as he walked around the house and pointed out little things he liked on the Airbnb app when he looked at pictures.
My favorite part was when he was super proud to show me the bathroom because…
“It has a fucking bidet!” - Joe pointed
He was looking equal parts intrigued and proud but I couldn't help but bust out laughing at his exclamation.
“There’s my goofy boy. You've been so romantic the past two days that I've kinda missed the goober side of you.” - you
“Trust me, it’s never gone sometimes it just gets overpowered by another side of me.” - Joe grinned
“C’mon Joey, let’s go take a nap.” - you
——
A few hours later, meaning like six, we woke up at one o'clock and decided to venture out of the house.
Joe had an itinerary on his phone that he pulled up while we were still lying in bed cuddling.
“Wanna go to a castle?” - Joe
“A Castle?! Yes!” - you
“Okay, we can get dressed and go to the Castello Brown before we head to lunch.” - Joe
“Is that the name of it?” - you
“Mhm.” - Joe nodded
“I can't believe I'm here with you right now. This is my dream come true, Joe. Thank you for everything, you're the best boyfriend a girl could ask for.” - you
“I love you.” - Joe kissed your forehead
——
Soon we were walking through the castle grounds hand in hand.
There was this one particular painting that I walked away from Joe to take a picture of, and when I turned around I was met with the sight of Joe holding his phone up taking a picture of me. He never fails to make me feel like the most loved woman on that planet.
We continued walking to the top where there was a beautiful view of the water. Our hands were laced together as I laid my head on Joe’s shoulder, and he laid his against mine.
The moment was amazing, everything just felt so surreal and magical. After everything Joe went through with football last season and all of the obstacles we've faced, it felt like they all disappeared.
I was so focused on Joe and the view that I flinched when there was a tap on my shoulder. When I turned around it was an older woman and what seemed to be her husband standing next to her.
“Sorry to bother but you two are just so adorable and remind me of my husband and I when we were young. I took a nice picture of you guys, do you want it?” - Lady
She showed Joe and me the picture and we both looked at each other with a large grin. You could see the love radiating off of us.
“Yes! Here I'll give you my number. I'm y/n and this is my boyfriend Joe.” - you smiled
“I’m Linda and this is my husband Ben. How long have you guys been together?” - Linda
“Seven years.” - you answered
“Wow, that's a long time! We've been together for 35. We got together as 15-year-olds in high school.” - Linda
“That’s so sweet. What are you guys doing in Italy?” - you
“Revisiting the place we got engaged for Valentine's Day. What about you two young’un’s?” - Linda
“Aww. This is my dream vacation place so Joe surprised me for Valentine’s Day.” - you
“That’s a good man you have.” - Ben nodded
“I know. He's my best friend.” - you grinned at Joe
We talked to Linda and Ben for a little longer before I offered to take a picture of them just like Linda had done with me and Joe.
They agreed and posed with smiles plastered on their faces.
Linda and I exchanged pictures before we parted ways and Joe and I went to lunch.
It was a place that Joe again attempted to pronounce, named Trattoria Tripoli.
“It has 4.5 stars.” - Joe
That boy really did do some research.
While we were sitting and waiting for our food Joe made a little ring out of the straw paper and slid it onto my ring finger. It was a gesture he'd done for a long time almost at every restaurant we go to, but this time it felt different. More butterflies set off in my stomach than normal.
——
We spent the rest of the evening and afternoon at the Airbnb watching movies on the couch since it had been such a long day.
At around seven I told Joe I was getting in the shower and that he was welcome to join me but he passed on the offer and said he wanted to start unpacking instead.
The shower was amazing and the many different settings had me making a mental note to buy a new showerhead for the house.
After stepping out I wrapped a towel around my body and put my hair up in another one before leaving the bathroom to get a comfy outfit.
I was confused when I stepped into the bedroom and Joe wasn't there, his suitcase was still zipped up and hadn't moved spots since we had gotten here.
“Joey?” - you yelled
My eyes scanned the room one more time and paused on the bed.
There was a beautiful dress I couldn't recognize as one from my closet and on top of it was a white envelope.
I immediately grabbed it and ripped it open.
Put this on and meet me on the balcony, the final surprise of the night. (but not of the trip)
The best of my love, Joe.
Asking myself the question I've been asking myself for 48 hours straight once again, what is he up to?
A while later I had the dress slipped on, my hair fixed, and very light makeup on.
There were nervous butterflies in my stomach because I had no idea what Joe was going to do.
I took a final deep breath before I walked out of the bedroom and out to where the balcony doors were in the living room.
When I stepped outside my heart stopped.
The instrumental version of Turning Page started playing (specifically at the time stamp 1:40) and Joe stood at the end of an Isle lined with candles and rose petals. He was wearing a dark grey button-down shirt with dark-washed jeans and dress shoes.
“Joe… what are you doing?” - your eyes filled with tears
“C’mere, baby.” - Joe smiled
I slowly walked to Joe who was nervously rubbing his sweaty palms on the front of his pants.
Joe took my hands in his and took in a deep nervous shaky breath.
“y/n y/l/n, for as long as I can remember I've wished for a princess to be the woman next to me. When I was younger every wish I made on an eyelash, dandelion, shooting star, or birthday candle, was about love. You filled that void. I remember the first time I laid eyes on you back at Ohio State, I was so infatuated with you but I knew there was no way I would be able to get an actual goddess to get out with me.” - Joe
He paused to laugh with me while I wiped my tears until he forged ahead.
“I was so surprised that my embarrassingly awful tries at flirting with you worked. I didn't need tutoring that much by the way, I just really wanted to be with you any chance I got. It seriously didn't matter to me if I was at your dorm studying till two with an eight AM practice the next morning if it meant I was spending time with you. You've been the one consistent thing in my life since then that I know will always be with me through anything. y/n, you're the princess that I've been asking for my whole life. The most gorgeous, humble, kind, selfless princess there ever was. You understand me on a level that no one else is even capable of doing and there isn't a life that I picture for myself without you in it. I'll love you when we're old farts with dentures, stealing kisses at the family get-togethers to freak our grandkids out because I know the rest of my living is with you. y/n, your love is my turning page.” - Joe
Both Joe and I giggled at his use of a line from the song that was currently playing before he dropped one of my hands to help wipe the steady flow of tears falling from my eyes.
“That being said…” - Joe
Joe paused and let go of my hands. My crying only got harder when he dropped down onto one knee and pulled the light blue Tiffany box out of his pocket. He flicked the box open and the gorgeous diamond ring only made me cry harder.
“Will you marry me?” - Joe looked up hopefully into your eyes
My hands covered my face for a second just because of how surreal this moment was.
“Yes! Of course, I'll marry you, Joe.” - your cried
Joe lept up and immediately wrapped his arms around me.
I wrapped my arms around him as he picked me up and spun me around.
When Joe finally sat me down he slipped the ring onto my finger and grabbed the back of my neck to kiss me.
Out of all the kisses we've had over seven years, this one was my favorite.
“I love you so much.” - Joe hugged you tight
“I love you too.” - you
——
We were both back in bed now that things had died down, but we were both bubbling with excitement.
“You’re my fiance.” - you smiled at Joe
“We’re getting married.” - Joe grinned
“You say that like you didn't think we ever would.” - You
“No, I knew we would. It's just official now. I'm so glad I finally did it.” - Joe
“Me too, baby. Me too.” - you smiled
I cuddled into Joe’s chest more and found myself nuzzled into his neck.
“Do you like the ring?” - Joe
“I love the ring. It's like exactly what I had pictured. You're really good at picking things out for me, Joe.” - you
“I have never put so much thought into anything else in my entire life. It took me weeks to find the one I wanted to get for you because it had to be perfect.” - Joe
“You seriously did an amazing job. We need to talk about some things though.” - you
“Like what?” - Joe
“When and how we're going to tell people, if we're going to make it public…” - you
“Shhh. We can worry about that when we're in Ohio. Right now I just want to be with my gorgeous fiance, eat dinner, and go to pound town later.” - Joe
I giggled and wrapped myself around Joe, grateful to have such an amazing man in my life who would soon be my husband.
