Part 3: Executioner

The other Juries are brought to silence instantly as the Jury standing before Glen drives their cane against the floor like a gavel.

"We have reached a decision," they announce. "Unfortunately, your request to alter the past and rewrite the Story has been denied. This world will head towards its end." Jury smiles, tilting their head as they turn towards Glen. "That's good. That is... The most interesting outcome."

Glen is silent for a long moment, intense, starry stare fixed on the ancient god before him. "In that case...."

Without a split second's warning, Glen swings his sword, bringing it down through Jury's inhuman body. Viscous, black liquid spills across the floor of the witness box.

"I won't be needing your counsel anymore."

That black fluid swirls around them both. As it slowly comes together, reforming Jury's body, it also tangles itself around Glen's arms and legs, bringing him to his knees. He drives the blade of his sword into the ground, bracing himself against it.

"You won't be able to open the door leading to the past," Jury warns, hovering over the defendant. "If one of the Glens were to go too far, I am allowed to strip him of that power."

Vincent races up the rest of those stairs, calling Glen's name as he reaches out to try and help. As he touches Glen's shoulder, however, that black goo suddenly errupts. There's a burst, and Jury staggers back. They groan in agony, their body left a half-formed, oozing thing. That liquid falls in an innate puddle on the floor.

"W-why--" Jury wails, their voice becoming distorted. "Why is the Child of Misfortune here?!"

Glen holds himself himself up by his sword driven into the ground, energy sapped by that awful goo. "He was here all along... You simply failed to notice, didn't you?" he says through gritted teeth. "Vincent. Stay by my side."

And what other choice does Vincent have but to obey?

"Children of Misfortune cannot be accounted for in your plans to create branch points in his world, correct?" Glen confirms as he pushes himself to his feet again. "Or rather. You can't see them at all, can you? They're complete irregularities generated randomly by the Core of the Abyss, outside your understanding or control. That's why you hate them. That's why you demand we cast them into the depths of Abyss as soon as possible."

Those massive chains pierce the air, driving into the ground below. They wrap across the massive Gate, sealing it shut and blocking Glen from approaching.

But, with a Child of Misfortune on his side... Glen suddenly grabs Jury by the throat. And the ancient watcher writhes beneath his hand.

"Can you die?" Glen asks, squeezing with all the strength in Leo's body. "Can you feel pain? Fear? Shall I discover with my own hands just how similar you are to us?"

The sound of footsteps behind him, however, forces Glen to drop his captive. He spins to perry Break's incoming strike. Jury creeps up behind him, an attempt to once again sap Glen's strength as he's distracted with his opponent. But the swordsman knocks Break back, then throws a strike across his body, swinging his sword over his shoulder, piercing straight through the eye of the eldritch figure behind him.

"Why are you trying to stop me?" he demands as Break catches his breath several steps below. "Do you, too, wish for this world to be destroyed?"

"Of course not," Break huffs. "But I cannot allow you to change the past, either. No one should ever do that. Trust me. Nothing good can come of it."

"Shut up, Hatter!!" Vincent yells, taking a step from Glen's side. "Countless lives can be saved this way! What's so wrong with that?!"

"Wow!" Break laughs. "When did you become so altruistic?"

Demios bursts forth from the shadows behind Vincent as his mismatched eyes narrow in rage. "Shut your goddamn mouth!!" he screams.

But the Executioner's spiny blades are blocked by the Abyss-destroying power of the Mad Hatter channeled into Break's blade. Vincent growls in frustration, his Chain shrinking back from the counter. Before he can strike again, Vincent is called away from his fight by Glen once again.

The head of the Baskervilles holds out a hand toward his servant. Hesitantly, Vincent reaches out his own. Jabberwock suddenly fills the air above them, a blast of energy already charging in its powerful jaws. As their hands meet, the dragon attacks.

Break drops to his belly to duck beneath the blast, but he was never really Glen's target.

The sound of static shakes the courtroom as the Juries in the stands scream and wail, unable to escape Jabberwock's blast. The dragon soars into the sky, leveling another tier. And with Vincent's power as a Child of Misfortune flowing through Glen, his Chain's attack is deadly, even for the ancient Juries.

Black goo oozes and drips from the stands.

Glen raises his sword, calling on the power of the Key to Abyss hidden within that blade.

The ground shakes as the chains across the massive gate all snap at once. Immediately, the doors open, revealing a veil of swirling black void.

Vincent feels his heart pound in his chest.

The courtoom seems to crack and fall apart around them. The witness box crumbles away, and the staircase extends, reaching up into that open portal.

Break races towards them. Whatever happens, he has to slow them down. He has to stop Glen from changing the past. He swings his blade, but Glen blocks his attack easily with his own.

"Are you in a hurry to die?" Glen warns as he draws to strike. Break manages to defend, but the force of the attack sends him flying. His back hits the crumbling edge of the witness stand, and the empty darkness of his vision is filled with stars. He slumps down helplessly where he lands.

Without any more distractions, Glen turns toward the past.

☆ six hairstyles!!!!1! (no idea what to title this) ☆
