20 - 21 June 1998 - A weekend in Salzburg - crazy pretzels and sliding down in the Berchtesgaden underground salt mine

21 June 1998

Hi everyone

Today and tomorrow, twenty years ago, I was in Salzburg, in kangaroo-less Austria, and the Berchtesgadener Land in southeasternmost Germany. Because I would not be paid until a week or so later, I had to spend a night in a hostel and eat cheap. I found a good hostel just southeast of downtown Salzburg, called the Eduard Heinrich Haus. I reserved my room by phone, on Friday on a payphone. (Payphones in 2018 are hard to find anymore)

Originally I was not supposed to go to Salzburg the weekend of the 20th/21st June, but rather on the 19th my work colleagues were supposed to go mountain climbing (actually hiking which could as well be climbing!) south of Holzkirchen. That was postponed until the 26th because of the weather forecast for the 19th – in the mountains of Bavaria, the weather can change unexpectedly, and it is hard to find shelter, so we made the safe decision to wait until the 26th.

From Munich to Salzburg, the Schönes Wochenende ticket that cost 35 DM, was valid all weekend on the slow trains. I took the Regional Express from Munich Ostbahnhof via Rosenheim and Freilassing. The train was not air conditioned, as were many Regional Express trains at the time, so it was an annoyance to some passengers, to slide the window down when going over 50 mph, particularly between Munich Ost and Rosenheim. I think I arrived around 10:30 AM in Salzburg Hbf. As I noted from 7th June 1998, there was no longer any formal customs between Germany and Austria as a result of the Schengen Agreement, so the station customs at Salzburg Hbf I remembered in operation in June 1997, for 1998 it was completely unmanned. It was still standing in December 2001/August 2002, and I think also in August 2004 when I returned for a day visit, but sometime in 2005, it was demolished to make room for more train platforms and was complete around February 2012.

I went to the ticket hall, and then bought a day pass for the Salzburg Verkehrsbetriebe for the city and also for the zones including Lamprechtshausen and also Trimmelkam, as I was curious about riding the Lokalbahn, which is now the S-1 line. In today's money it would be EUR 13.60, now 190 Schilling if today's exchange rate of ATS 13.9 = EUR 1.00 were to be used, but it was cheaper 20 years ago. It was a good ride up to Lamprechtshausen. I bought myself a big bottle of Almdudler (it is herbal and tastes like fizzy iced tea) at the Billa grocery store, of which I posted a photo of it while waiting for a bus in Wildshut. From Lamprechtshausen I took the "shuttle line" to Bürmoos in Oberösterreich. There was not much to see or do, and I was not quite thirsty enough to drink any of the Almdudler while waiting for the train to return to Bürmoos and on to Salzburg, so somehow I walked to Wildshut. I think I took an hour to get there. It was sunny and I think about the 90s. I caught the bus that went on to Oberndorf where the S-1 would take me back to Salzburg. I was starting to get a headache so I drank some of the Almdudler but it was not much use. I went back to Hbf to fetch my clothes bag and headed for the hostel. I had to take trolley bus 51 and exit at Egger-Lienz-Straße and walk a half mile towards the Salzach bank more or less. My bed in the room was ready, and I took a nap for about two hours, and listened to the former "Blue Danube Radio" station. The station is now part of the independent channel FM4. I remember a story about the Empress Sisi mentioned on the broadcast.

I could not stay at the hostel for so long, as I did not come to Salzburg just to sleep all day. I had to go back to the Altstadt to see what was going on. As the 1998 FIFA World Cup was still in group stage, there were two matches. One was Belgium vs Mexico, and the other was Netherlands vs South Korea. I did not have any internet at the time, even a "smart phone", so back in 1998, there would be internet set up and probably 50 people or so would wait in line, waiting 15 to 20 minutes to get a turn. I think I waited a whole hour. Grumpy-Old-Man would say "That's the way it was, and we *liked* it!" Now everyone can just skip that and use their smartphone. I thought of going up to the top of the castle but I decided it was getting too late for that. I think I had a "Käsekreiner" and can of Stiegl beer for dinner, took a bus to the Parsch district, I guess for sentimental reasons, and when it was dark, I went back to the hostel. Back then I did not know that the Sacher Hotel was across the Salzach from the Altstadt, until I saw an ad sometime in July 1998. It was out of my price range at the time anyway.

Sunday morning the 21st was as sunny as Saturday. That was the day I was going to go to the Schloß Salzburg by cable car. I had breakfast at the hostel, washed up, checked out, then took bus 51 to Salzburg Hbf to leave my clothes bag. I went to the castle by cable car. At the top, there was a very good panoramic view, not just of the , but also towards Maxglan, Hallein and even a little bit of Tirol. And also the Berchtesgadener Land which I would visit later that day. After I took the cable car down, I walked around and found a pretzel seller. They had so many kinds of soft pretzels that I chose three, all of them about 10 inches wide. One with ham and cheese, one with just salt, and the other split and filled with chocolate. I took them along and then after taking the bus to Maxglan, I ate the ham and cheese pretzel, maybe one more. By that time I think I had seen enough of Salzburg. I was not much of a fan of Sound of Music so I did not go on that tour. It was time to leave Austria and then return to Germany.

I boarded, I think 1:30 PM, the train at Salzburg Hbf, for Berchtesgaden via Freilassing. It arrived in Berchtesgaden, the end of the line, at 3 PM. I thought of going to Kehlsteinhaus / Eagles Nest (would do that on 19th July 1998), but I settled on the Salzbergwerke, the salt mine. It is basically a 10 minute train ride inside the mountain, a walk through the tunnels, sliding down and also a boat ride through the salt pool. Everyone is required to wear a rented salt mine overall (somewhere I have a selfie!) and stay with the guide at all times. In comparison to the upper 80s temperatures, the inside of the mountain was about the low 50s. It is constant year round, as I would find out later, namely in February 2012 when I visited another salt mine in Bad Dürrnberg near Hallein. Coming out of the salt mine was not so fun, after it being so cool inside. Oh no it's so hot! The walk back to the rail station was not pleasant but I had a surprise going back to Munich. The train that arrived in Berchtesgaden as an Intercity train, was returning to Munich as a Regional Express, it was air conditioned and my Schönes Wochenend Ticket was also valid at no extra charge. What was the catch? It had to make its scheduled stops. But I did not mind.

I think I arrived at München Hbf about 8:30 or 9 PM, went to work the next day. The weather forecast for Friday 26 June would be mostly sunny, for my colleagues, excellent weather for mountain climbing. I will tell about that sometime next week, what that all entailed. No one got hurt (badly), everyone survived. And I even had a chance to see a pre-production BMW Z3-based E36 series coupe - probably the coolest car I saw all that year.

Well, have a nice rest of the week, everyone. There were no "foreign" journeys - in relation to Germany - expected until Friday 10th July 1998.

We all have a favorite alternative universe we’d like to see Team 5ds in. Whether it be a coffee shop, college, or maybe even a glimpse of the timeline Z-ONE came from! Anything is on the table for this day!

Like the Heart of the Cards, there are many signature catchphrases within the world of 5ds. What’s your favorite quote?

Prepping for Isaias coming through tomorrow with a last check on my crabs. Also, found a cool summer study challenge by @myhoneststudyblr and think it could be something fun to try! I’m a bit behind since it started in July, so I’ll just do a broad one for all of July and then maybe so once a week :)

13th July: What are your plans for this summer?

I’m doing research all summer on a grant looking at parasitic barnacles!

14th July: Have your plans changed at all because of the pandemic?

Sort of, mostly timings were delayed until the start of July as opposed to the end of May. I was supposed to go to Disney World for my sister’s graduation but that’s been postponed :(

15th July: Do you have a specific goal for this summer?

Catch up on my New Year’s Resolutions and organize my creative projects.

16th July: Do you have a lot of work to do for school or university or your job this summer?

I’ve started research this summer so that’s been taking up most of my time.

17th July: What is the most important task that you need to complete this summer?

Move into my new apartment.

18th July: What do you usually do during the summer?

It’s changed a lot since I started college. In high school I had a summer theater camp I went to, but now I just do odd jobs and do a lot of reading.

19th July: What did you do during the summer when you were a young child?

I used to do swim team and go to a week long overnight camp!

20th July: Do you usually go on vacation during the summer?

Yes! We usually go to the beach with my mom and my dad takes us to New York or Atlanta.

21st July: What is the best vacation you have ever been on?

I went to California to visit my grandparents and we spent a lot of time in Monterey and at national parks! It was beautiful and full of good food!

22nd July: What is your dream vacation?

Going on a road trip somewhere and exploring new places with a couple friends for a week.

23rd July: What is the worst vacation you have ever been on?

I don’t think I have a worst vacation. All of the ones in my memory have been fun in their own ways.

24th July: What is your favorite vacation memory?

Surprising my older sister with a trip to Disney World for her graduation when she thought we were just going to the beach!

25th July: What was/is your favorite event/day in the summer? Are you a summer person or do you prefer it when it is colder?

I really like the beginning of August because that’s usually when we were at the beach. I love summer weather, but I tend to get a bit bored if I don’t have some structure during the day.

26th July: What is your typical daily routine in the summer?

Wake up at 6, shower, dress, eat breakfast, then head to the lab for the day and check on my crabs. My friend and I will eat lunch outside by the cove. Then I head home and relax until dinner. I attempt to sleep by 11 but that doesn’t always work.

27th July: Do you stay indoors or outdoors more in the summer?

Outdoors if I’m by the ocean but indoors usually. Me and bugs don’t get along.

28th July: How do you stay motivated to study during the summer?

I’m usually bored out of my mind so having something to do, even studying, is a wonderful relief.

29th July: Have you done or are you planning to do any activities other than normal work during the summer?

I’ve taken a few beach days and had some movie nights, but mostly it’s just research grind.

30th July: Beach or swimming pool?

Beach!

31st July: What do you like most about the beach?

I like sitting in the water and just swimming or boarding for hours.

Sunday, August 17th, 2023 - Day 15 of quarantine

“Westchester County residents should be expected to shelter in place for at least 5 more weeks. Healthcare professionals are resigning by the hundreds as the disease spreads to nurses and doctors throughout the country. Over half of all patients that have tested positive for the Westchester Plague have either committed suicide or attempted to commit suicide. More at noon.”

“It only gets worse and worse every day,” Desirée frowns.

“Maybe we should take a break from the news for a while.” Andy turns the TV off and heads into the kitchen. “What do you want to eat?”

“Um…” Desirée could probably read him a numbered and alphabetized list of foods that she would ruin right about now, but she refrains. “What do we have?”

“Well, there’s some ramen in here…”

Not ideal, but it’ll have to do. They are in the middle of an epidemic, after all. “Awesome.”

So they eat chicken flavored ramen like a pair of broke college students while watching some old anime, which Andy adamantly rejects the second the words leave her lips (“Avatar: The Last Airbender is a cartoon, Desirée”), and she lets her mind wander.

Eventually, it arrives to Andy, as it seems to do more and more often these days. His name warms her skin like the sun on a late summer afternoon. His presence feels like the down comforter on her bed after a long day of work.

A small smile plays at her lips as she leans into the promise of an exciting summer and sweet dreams. It welcomes her with open arms and promises fond memories for years to come. But as soon as she goes to take it, she finds herself drenched in a raging storm.

While they polish off the last of their cups, a devastating truth hits her.

As lovely as their moment feels, its end is as inevitable as the bone-chilling winter or the start of a new day.

Monday, August 18th, 2023 - Day 16 of quarantine

“Did you want to give video games another try?” Andy asks tentatively. Then, like the infuriating bastard he is, he smirks. “I promise I’ll let you win.”

“That won’t be necessary.” Desirée retorts, donning a small smile.

“Don’t get too cocky or I’ll have to show you up.” Andy

After a tense round of Mortal Kombat, the TV screen flashes a victory. Andy slumps back, defeated.

“I...how…?”

“Lily and I used to play. I’m excellent at playing dumb, Andy,” Desirée smirks. “You know this about me.”

He shakes his head. “You’re something else, you know that?”

“If you say so.” Desiree rolls her neck and stretches her arms. “Ready for round 2?”

Tuesday, August 19th, 2023 - Day 17 of quarantine

“Scientists have found that cutis dissolutitis, better known as the Westchester Plague, mutated from Bacillus subtilis, a bacteria species found in dirt that acts as a decomposer of organic materials. It was first found in a large forest area. The best way to protect against this epidemic is to cover all exposed skin when you’re outside and sanitize once you’re inside.” A disgruntled news anchor reports from the outside of a nondescript building. The only patch of visible skin is around his eyes, which are covered by transparent goggles.

Desirée gasps suddenly. “Oh my god, the woods. Andy, you don’t think that…”

He catches the implication. “There’s no way. Devon would never do this.”

“We never suspected that Jane...or Noah…” She shakes her head. “I just hope not.”

Wednesday, August 20th, 2023 - Day 18 of quarantine

The official body count is projected to be 100. Over 200 citizens in the county have reported testing positive for the virus and 400 more are showing symptoms. Ignoring the news at this point is just short of irresponsible, but fear keeps her from lingering on the headlines.

As the day winds to a close, a feeling of dread slowly infiltrates her mind. The thought of tomorrow makes her skin crawl. Her stomach inverts and reverts on a constant loop as she reads yet another headline about yet another person committing suicide to avoid the disease.

The sun sets and she’s overcome with a terrible truth. A subtle prick of worry that blossoms into a deep ache in her chest that she can’t quite place.

“Something terrible is going to happen tomorrow.” Desirée whispers aloud. She locks herself in the bathroom as she feels the omen leave her lips. Andy doesn’t need to hear this. “Something that will change everything we thought was true.”

Thursday, August 21st, 2023 - Day 19 of quarantine

They don’t bother changing out of their pajamas anymore.

An alert on her phone tells her that the death toll in Westchester County has climbed from 100 to 1,000 overnight. Westchester alone has lost a third of its population. Then, she gets the call.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Dizzy,” Lily sniffles.

She knows that something is very wrong for two reasons. One, no one has called her Dizzy since her junior year in high school. Two, Lily is a notorious night owl and wouldn’t be caught out of bed before 9 in the morning if she had her way, let alone willingly engaging in human interaction. If she was calling at 8 AM, it had to be serious.

“Lily, is everything okay?” Desirée whispered as she tiptoed out of bed to avoid waking Andy.

“It’s my mom.” She sobs, and suddenly she can no longer hear the hum of the vents above her head or the whirring of her computer on the coffee table. “She has the plague.”

“Lily, how long has she had it?”

“I don’t know.” She sobs harder. “They’re queueing everyone on the block for testing.”

“Lily, it’s going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay,” Desirée whispers. The burning in her eyes and the constricting feeling in her throat tell her that she’s crying, too. “You’re going to be okay.”

She’s lying through her teeth and she knows it, but the words seem to offer Lily some comfort as she recites them back to her.

“I will be okay,” she chokes out. “Everything will be okay.”

“If you need anything at all…”

“I know who to call,” Lily replies. The line goes dead.

Desirée holds the phone to her chest and sends a silent prayer. It’s bad enough that you’ve taken a third of our town. Please don’t take Lily, too.

Silent tears stream down her cheeks as she prays over and over again.

Don’t take Lily.

It’s that exact moment that Andy wraps his arms around Desirée’s middle and buries his head in the crook of her neck. She’s suddenly overcome with guilt and shame as she turns to him with shining eyes.

“Andy, I-”

“Shhh.” He shakes his head and pulls her into his chest, blinking back tears of his own. “Whenever you’re ready.”

Soon, everyone knows. The news is bleaker than ever, with cameras being shoved into the grieving families of the victims and the death toll climbing by the hour. As the day crawls to an end and she lays in Andy’s arms, one thing becomes astoundingly apparent.

Life will never be the same again.

Friday, August 22nd, 2023 - Day 20 of quarantine

It becomes physically unbearable to look at the news. Desirée briefly considers letting Andy unplug the TV again.

No one takes the news of Lily’s mother well, but Ava seems to struggle with it the most. She refuses to answer phone calls from anyone and only replies in short, but extremely worrying sentences.

“I wish this wasn’t going on so that I could check on her.” Desirée sighs after a fifth “missed” call. She’s curled up on the living room sofa with her head hanging on the arm. Her eyes are shut tight. “But here we are.”

“She’s never really been the emotional type, Rée.”

“That’s why I’m so worried about her. If she’s shutting down this early, what’s she gonna do if Mrs. Ortiz doesn’t make it?”

“I don’t know, but I think what Ava needs right now is space.”

“Andy, I can’t just let her spiral.” She sits up at this, frowning.

“I know it’s hard to see her like this, but you can’t protect everyone.”

“I know I can’t. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.” Desirée whispers. “But I can help.”

“What happened with Devon wasn’t your fault, Desirée. The only person you should blame is-”

“Don’t.”

“The point I’m making is that you don’t always have to be everyone’s person.” Andy stares deeply into her eyes. For a second, it feels as if he’s seeing her every flaw, every imperfection she’s buried deep into her heart and mind, every secret she’s ever kept and maybe even the ones she didn’t. For the longest second, it feels as if he’s peering into her soul and reading it with the ease of a picture book and she’s helpless to turn away and shut him out despite the fact that she desperately wants to. “You’re always so focused on being there for everyone else, but who’s going to be there for you?”

You. She almost whispers. It’s always been you.

“A therapist.” She replies instead, forcing a small smile. “And a bottle of wine.”

“Take care of yourself.” Andy squeezes her shoulders once and turns for the bedroom. “Let someone else be there for you once in a while.”

“Someone else like who?”

“I don’t think either one of us is ready for that conversation.”

“You sure?” Desirée retorts, suddenly emboldened. She’s not the only mind reader between them and she’ll be damned if Andy Kang gets to leave her wondering like every night before. “Because I feel plenty ready to talk. If you’re scared of going there, just say that.”

“Who’s scared?” Andy turns back around, staring her down. She holds her own, meeting his gaze head on. “I’ll go there if that’s what you want.”

“Hey, don’t hold back on my account. If you want to say something, I’m all ears.”

“Could you handle that?” He walks slowly toward her as he speaks, sizing her up. “Could you handle it if I told you that I wish you’d stop trying to play tough all the time and open up to me like you used to? That I wish we’d just quit this dance where we pretend we’re still not in love with each other?” Her breath catches and his face is inches away from hers, so much so that she can feel his breath on her cheeks. “Could you even function knowing that?”

“I could. You know why?” She finally responds, placing her hand directly onto his chest. “Nothing is the way it used to be, Andy. We’re not the way we used to be when this started and we’ll never be those people again. So I suggest…” She tilts her head upwards and brushes her lips against his chin. “...you make peace with that.”

She lets him meditate on her words as she heads toward the bedroom and into the conjoined bathroom, where she finally lets her face rest in her hands as she cries.

Saturday, August 23, 2023 - Day 21 of quarantine

They don’t speak for most of the day.

“I probably should’ve told you this earlier,” Desirée tells Andy during the evening. They’ve just eaten dinner. “But everything that happened on Thursday...I felt it.”

“You...what?”

“I’d just been feeling horrible all day and I thought my anxiety was just acting up, but then I just felt this ache in my chest and I knew something awful was going to happen.”

“What did it feel like?”

“Death.” She inhales a shaky breath before nodding resolutely. “It felt like death.”

On April 29 I wrote here:

This is the first cartoon I’ve updated on the day it was drawn because there was no buffer (as opposed to one I wanted to update with right away instead of putting it behind what was in the buffer) since before the new season started last August. If memory serves, I’ve quit for the season when the buffer ran out the last few seasons, so this may be the first necessarily immediate update for years. This year I mean the season to run until May 21 whatever it takes (May 21 is my arbitrarily chosen Traditional Date for season finale because it’s the date triangle cartoons [not yet then under the title The Hero of Three Faces] went on summer hiatus in 2004 because Arthur, King of Time and Space debuted). “Whatever it takes” may mean lots of sketches and weak gags (I won’t be saying which ones I think are the weak ones). There’s a reason I take a summer hiatus.

I’ve been thinking for at least a week and a half that the 21st was Wednesday of this week, tomorrow, and I went through today tryna hammer out what I thought was the last gag I’d have to write before summer hiatus, only to realize after updating that tomorrow is the 20th. Now I gotta do today’s emotional journey all over again tomorrow, though hopefully with the inclusion of coming up with a new gag, at the latest, just after I start redrawing one swiped from the old website.

The season finale gag is a pretty good finale gag but I still wish I’d saved that other one.

It’s time to join Ikki’s fan club! Or, is it? Much like the protagonist, Ikkis eyes never really worked on me either, but he was doomed with me from the start. I loathe the pretty boy, girls flocking around him type. The first time i saw him, he reminded me of Caesar from Princess Debut, or Shingen from Ikemen Sengoku. But he actually turns out to be a pretty decent guy, and eventually I found myself blushing. I never pick these types in otome unless I’m trying to 100% a game, so he was a nice change of pace. Ikki’s charm is not in his *INTENSE RADIANT BEAUTY*, it’s in his reflection on it, and how it affects his life.

And there you have it! You’ve seen every side there is to Ikki. I’m curious to know how other people felt while playing through his route. His character left me a bit conflicted, and i stubbornly wanted to know what all the hype was surrounding him and kind of answered my own question in the end. It’s hard to wonder as the player if he really LIKES you, or if hes just into you because you're the only one whose not laying all over him begging to be his girlfriend. It’s just a game, i know, so OBVIOUSLYYYYY, he really does like our protagonist. But still! I felt that worry as if I was in her shoes. I guess that’s what makes him such a great character!

July 1st, 1974

It's so nice starting off summer, knowing that Sirius is safe. But now I'm worried about Reggie. At least Reggie isn't as impulsive as Sirius, which likely means he can resist getting into fights with his parents. At least I hope so.

Sirius and I accidently broke a mirror today. But it gave me a really good idea. Lily was telling us of things called tellie fones* that let you talk to people even if you're miles away. What if we could charm the mirrors to do that as well? Except we could also enchant them to let us see each other's faces. Dad says he'll even help us out, as long as we do the research first!

I was right to say that Pete wouldn't like the idea of studying, but I was wrong to say that he would do it anyways. He practically lives in the kitchen and since Mum loves my friends, she keeps making him sandwiches.

I can't believe that he doesn't realize how important this is to me.

Pete finally came to study with us today, but it was pointless. All he does is distract Remus, and Remus hates distractions while studying. So, now, Remus is in the kitchen, but at least he's studying there. And he's eating a bunch, which is a bonus!

Sirius thinks he found a spell that will work!!!!

Dad cast the spell on two shards of the mirror, and it worked, it really worked! Dad says that we can even enchant other shards, that way all of us can keep in contact, but it might be tricky, seeing as we can't find a way that one shard can reach a specific shard, instead of all of them. Guess we'll just have to trust that the others aren't listening in, that is, if we do enchant the other shards. For now, it's just going to be one for me, and one for Sirius and Reggie.

Remus and Peter had to leave yesterday, but they'll be back for a day at the end of the month, even though both Sirius and I told Remus that he didn't have to come, since the moon is on the third. He refuses to not come. I think he just really wants to see Sirius before Si goes back to that place.

Sirius seems to be eating more as we get closer and closer to his send off. I have to wonder if they even feed him. Mom doesn't seem to mind though.

Today is Reggie's birthday. I wish I could be with him, spoiling him with gifts and making him smile, maybe kissing him (if he wanted me to). I just miss him so much, and I feel so blue, and I should be paying more attention to Sirius, but it's like I can't focus on anything except Reggie.

Everyone showed up today for Sirius' send off party, even Lily.

My parents are so excited to meet all my friends, and they told everyone to call them Monty and Mia instead of Mr. and Mrs. It's a little embarrassing, but I would never tell them that.

We're playing a bunch of games, but I don't feel the way I usually do about these things. It's more of an empty, guilty feeling.

I just wish he didn't have to go back home.

What I was feeling about Reggie being at that house with those has now doubled because Sirius is there too. I know that I'll see them in a month, but it's still pretty devastating to think of what could be happening to them...

Thank Merlin that Sirius took the mirror shard, that way I can check on them whenever possible.

Today was the first time Sirius and Reggie were able to talk, because apparently they were both being watched pretty closely, presumably because two certain evil "people" (more like monsters) thought that Sirius would try and "corrupt" Reggie.

Sirius let Reggie and I talk for the majority of the time, and he doesn't seem to be hurt, physically or mentally. But I still wish that he wasn't there. I just want to hold him and take care of him and...

Ugh, I need to stop.

Today, Reggie and I talked about quidditch for an hour. He's the Slytherin seeker, and I'm the Gryffindor chaser, so it's not we can give each other tips, but we both love playing, and Reggie has some good ideas on how it could be safer. I know that they will probably will never happen, because the Wizenmagot is kind of stupid when it comes to safety regulations, but a boy can dream, right?

I know that Sirius probably feels left out when Reggie and I take up most of the talking time that they, but I'm sure he understands... Or at least I hope he does.

Anyways, Reggie talked to me today about The Monsters. Apparently they've been hinting at him that he's going to join the Death Eaters (the other side of the war) in a couple of years. I just hope that I can save him and Sirius by then.

Actually, I hope that there will never be a war. But that's too much to ask for, isn't it?

Sirius and I talked today, because apparently Reggie isn't feeling well. Sirius refuses to give details, so that I know it's bad. But I can't go to Mum and Dad unless I know what happened...

This is me, adding some notes, at 8.14 am. I must admit waking up one hour sooner is making me more productive. I like working in the morning and the sooner I start, the more is done.

I was studying from 7 am to 12 am. Then I took break before lesson, so my eyes didn’t hurt. I can’t even believe, how my eyesight got worse during online classes. I think I should visit my ophthalmologist.

I still want to finish creating new flashcards set, but I started feeling a bit sleepy.

I hope tomorrow is going to be better. :)

16/100 days of productivity

Well, well, well.... After long months of isolation, I finally spoke to someone from outside :D It really made me feel better, calmer, I smiled the whole time I was out with friends. I miss daily socialization.

In physics, we started optics, which I really love and it’s probably the only chapter I understand :D So the few following weeks, I might enjoy hated-by-me physics.

Currently, I have small revising session in bed. Don’t mind the torn periodic table, it’s very old one and survived through many cruel moments of my life with chemistry.

Tomorrow is the longest and toughest day of the week and the last day of March. I probably will have no time to fully enjoy it, but I am very excited for what April is about to bring <3

#summer studying challenge 2021

Hello! I am back! August is behind the corner, school days are getting closer and closer. On September 16th, I have introduction to medical studies. I am so excited.

Also, I flipped through the pages of my anatomy books. First topics will cover skeleton and muscles. To be honest, I am terrified of face muscles :D I am sure I will feel uncomfortable after seeing cadaver ooops

16th July - Do you have any summer traditions?

Not really. But one thing I noticed is that every summer I did something to my hair. Once I dyed it Ariel red, next summer it was purple, then I cut my bangs and last summer I dyed my hair ginger. This summer, I am thinking about getting curtain bangs, but we will see... So I guess my tradition is to change my hair.

17th July - What is your typical daily routine in the summer?

On days when I am working, I wake up at 4 am, have light breakfast, go to work, come home at 8 pm, then I do a few Duolingo lessons, take shower and go to sleep. (So sad, I know)

When I have day off, I wake up at 6 or 7, have a cup of coffee, watch morning show on tv, then I do Duolingo lessons and stories, walk the dog, clean the house and my room, journal a bit, then in late afternoon, I visit my aunt, we drink coffee (sometimes wine) and chat. Then I read a book or scroll socials and in the evening, I watch movies. (Boring af)

18th July - How do you stay motivated during the summer? (for example, to study)

This summer it is a little bit more difficult, since I am not spending most of my days at home. But I will tell you example, I am completing Duolingo lessons, because of my 180 days streak. Does it count as motivation?

19th July - Do you stay indoors or outdoors more in the summer?

It's 50:50.

20th July - Are you a ‘summer person’?

Not at all. I am glad it is finally warm outside, but I prefer spring or autumn.

21st July - What is an unpopular opinion that you have about summer?

School holidays are a bit too long. In my country, holidays last 2 months, college students have longer holidays. I think, 2 months at once is a bit too much. I would prefer having holidays like this: School from September to Christmas, then maybe 3 weeks of holidays in April or May and then August.

22nd July - What does summer feel like where you live?

It feels....fine? I live in Central Europe, so we do not have any sea, but I live in area that is influenced by the mountain climate, so our temperatures are not that high, but I still feel like in sauna.

23rd July - Would you prefer summer to be hotter or colder than it usually is for you?

Colder!!!

24th July - Would you prefer your summer to be shorter or longer?

If we talk about the season, then I am okay with how it is now :)

25th July - Daytime or nighttime – what’s your favourite time during summer?

Suprisingly, I prefer nighttime. I am usually morning person and most active before noon, but it changes in summer where I am opposite.

26th July - Do your sleeping habits change during summer?

I go to sleep later in the night.

27th July - Do your eating habits change during summer?

Yes, for me it is easier to do 20+ hours fasting during summer than in winter sooooo.... that's what I do (#not pro any eating disorder)

Ruth's Random Rambles - Week 3

I decided to create this "series" to relax a bit from school and to keep this blog active :)

It's already middle of the week 3 of my first semester at medical school. Let me be honest, it's hell. There's too much to study, too much papers to fill and too little time. I still have no idea how people in higher years managed to pass all of the exams.

Currently, chemistry is a huge problem for me. Equations, pH, solutions, titrations,... I have to score more than 60% on my exams and this scares me! God, I hope I will pass my exams.

About anatomy, well, we are still studying upper limb. This week was about muscles. Anatomy is all about memorizing and revising.

The biggest struggle for me is keeping myself motivated. It was only 2 weeks into semester and I already searched for a job, because I thought I won't make everything on time and it made me feel down.

But if i fall down, I am sure I will stand up and work as hard as I can towards my medical diploma :) #motivation

May 4th, 2021 happy star wars day!

51/100 days of productivity

I am halfway through this challenge. lol. I am kinda proud of myself, that I am able to stick to this blog.

The informatics exam was easy, but the problem was lack of time. Really, 90 minutes to finish 16 tasks with lots of tables, formulas,... I didn’t finish all of the exercises. But I hope I have at least 60% correct.

I wasn’t as productive as I would like to be today. For last few days, I feel huge wave of tiredness during the day. I can’t focus, because I am always yawning and just feeling tired. I have no idea what’s wrong.

Shame on me, because I still haven’t written my April sum-up and May title page into my bujo. :/
