i think we should stop making fun of the way ppl dress. saying this as someone who doesn't know shit abt (current) fashion and doesn't want to. all trends are manufactured by corporations you are not better than anyone else for being able to afford keeping up with them. also clothes can be used for self expression and making fun of anyone who dresses in any way that's not the norm is just kind of disney channel school bully behavior of you (that's not even getting into how certain disabilities affect your ability to wear certain clothes so some people literally CAN'T keep up with trends even if they wanted to and could afford it)

Rollo can't bear the way you look at him.

All the ideas he'd been stewing over for years, the ideals that shaped his life, the plans to take it all down... To reshape this world, and finally make it a safe place to live. (so no one may have to find one of their loved ones in such a state, ever again.) To you, he bared his heart. All of it came bursting out of him in one powerful, continuous, disjointed rant. For him to even have entertained the thought of confessing, much less go through with it, means he has come to care about your opinion far, far too much. He wanted you to treat him like you always do. For you to find the good in himself that he has failed to discover. 

He wanted you to tell him that his ideas were worthy, that the salvation he dreamed of was beautiful, that the people embraced by the cleansing fires would have deserved it. If you reached out your hand to him, he would have taken it. He thought, maybe, you would be the one to understand.

Instead, you look at him with pity. It causes his chest to tighten like it’s being constricted, and his mouth to set into a thin line. Your ideas do not align with his. But, how could they? Compared to him, you are too kind and untainted, too believing and warmhearted. He should not have expected you to be able to descend to his way of thinking. You are no fool for that; You, who hail from a world that never knew magic, to whom the concept is fresh, could not be expected to grasp all of its dangers. 

“Rollo... Um, it’s clear you’ve been suffering a lot. I’m sorry that I didn’t notice before, and that I couldn’t help you. What happened to your brother sounds... Horrific, and you have every right to be upset about that. But...” Your gaze wanders off. “I think that while magic has the potential to do harm, it can also do many good things. Taking it all away would be- Well, I don’t think it would be the right action to take here.”

With your words, your fate is sealed, and so is his. Rollo has gone too far down the path of no return to be changed now, and you are clearly too kind to take up the burden of truth from this world. He would have shown you their crimson salvation, but it is clear that you would, in your limitless, naive kindness, not be able to bear it. For all these filthy mages, you would only be a perfect victim. He has to do this. You will not known, until it is all over. And once you can walk the streets of the City of Flowers, without a care in the world, you will thank him. 

For now, he will pretend. His tongue feels heavy in his mouth as he prepares to tell his lies. He will have to sink down further, before being allowed peace. “I- I understand.” Rollo mutters. “What would you suggest I do then? And, please, do not tell anyone about this, because I...” He trails off, and you support him.

“I get it. I promise I won’t. You haven’t done anything yet. Thoughts are just thoughts, and you’re not evil for them, or anything.” You smile. The rest of your words are lost on his ears, but Rollo cannot stop staring at you. If he tucked you away somewhere safe, until all is said and done... You wouldn’t be able to try and save him with your good intent.

dunno if you've discussed it but having your chronically ill character describe themselves as "a pitiful amalgamation of frail bone and flesh" feels very offensive. said as someone who is chronically ill. don't get me wrong I am all here for chronically ill characters who aren't inspiration porn but this just feels like mockery.... i hope you understand what im saying.

Thank you for your message. My past writing is unfortunately riddled with insensitive handling of subjects that I don’t personally have experience with. This is something that I’m actively working on improving, because the last thing in the world that I want to do is hurt people through my art or writing.

I had actually addressed this on Twitter a little while ago (I will include that message here) but I don’t think I’ve posted it here yet, my apologies. In all honesty I had completely forgotten that I wrote that specific piece blurb that you mentioned until I saw your message, and I deleted that post accordingly. It was insensitively written, and while I want to say “what was I thinking?” the frank answer is that I wasn’t.

Here is what I shared on Twitter:

“It has come to my attention that the way I’ve been writing Te’lise – the secondary protagonist in my main Dragon Age story, who has a lifelong chronic illness - contains potentially ableist tropes.

I feel sick and horrified by the thought of my writing and stories hurting anybody, when I share them with the intent of doing anything but that. I have an unfortunate habit of going into a situation with good intentions, but ultimately fumbling it due to foolish ignorance on my part. Despite that flaw of mine, I’m determined to make this right in any way I can.

This whole time, I’ve been viewing her story solely through the lens of The Writer. I know what happens from start to finish, all of the mistakes and trials and tribulations that my characters go through, and all of their development. I know how (currently) Te’lise’s arc is supposed to be one of gradual self-acceptance and self-love. But you, as the readers, are only able to view the bits and pieces I provide, and piece together a story from there. Because I’ve been publishing snippets instead of a story in chronological order, it puts my storytelling at a disadvantage, leaving many details murky and able to be misinterpreted. I have a feeling this plays a large part in how I’ve fumbled her tale so far, and I apologize. I should have considered that more when posting.

Clearly I’m not experienced enough of a writer to tackle the subject of struggles with disabilities and chronic illnesses in a respectful and insightful manner. Even if I were more experienced, that might not have been a good narrative choice on my part regardless, because I’m able-bodied and I’ve never had to deal with those struggles myself. No matter how much I research or try to tread delicately, that will never be able to compare to the lived experiences of disabled people, and I understand that now. I’m so sorry for not understanding it sooner.

I don’t want Te’lise to be portrayed as a caricature or a negative stereotype or to hurt anyone in any way, so I was thinking of removing her current insecurities at the beginning of her story (namely, not feeling ‘good enough’ because of her chronic illness) to prevent any sort of unconscious ableism at the source. There are ways to facilitate character growth without falling into harmful tropes or stereotypes, and I’m determined to make that happen.

If anyone has other suggestions as to how I should proceed with this, or opinions on if this is the right way to proceed, I’d be endlessly grateful if you shared them. I really want to make this right in any way I can.

Thank you to the people who brought this to my attention. My head is always in the clouds, and that unfortunately has consequences. Good intentions don’t always translate in the way they should, and I’m ashamed at the thought of hurting anybody with a character that I’ve created to share love. I’m taking this experience to heart as a lesson, and I’m going to be more careful with how I tackle sensitive and nuanced subjects like this in the future.”

Since I posted this, many people have generously reached out to offer advice, and even firsthand experiences with chronic illnesses. I’ve started researching more thoroughly into how to write chronically ill characters without unconsciously falling into ableist tropes. I’ve also been approaching how I write my characters more thoughtfully, and with more tact, in general.

Yeah, I was very sad yesterday seeing everyone do that. Especially the secondhand embaressment. This is this production company's first big thing, in the SPN universe, and when you have the actor of that universe suddenly turn producer to make more content — folks were going to write articles and the twitter descriptions it's just like —

I feel like the fandom showed its ass yesterday. No one is saying folks have to be jazzed but the reaction, in my opinion, was childish and very rude. Many things that the fandom told each other over the last several months, telling each other how much we trust Jensen with anything SPN related, how much we began to understand his respect for the material etc etc just flew out the window as soon as folks saw 'John Winchester'.

Folks I thought of as rational thinkers, level headed, not dramarific or one for over reactions for SPN things over the years were very quick to get morose, negative, and bemoan the fact this isn't a continuation with destiel attatched to it. There were also the concerns over trying to paint John as a "good man", which, there's no way to make that assumption with any facts behind it. It's just emotions replacing facts in my opinion.

It's like the article was published, people blinked, and forgot everything.

It takes two seconds of thought to understand where this is coming from, what may come of it, and what benefits it'd have to both CMP and to just the SPN universe in general.

But some people wanted to get memes out, wanted to get the quip out, wanted to get the viral tweet or tumblr post, wanted to sit on their rockers and just complain.

I understand some of the criticisms, and they are founded — after the content begins and you actually see something amiss with it.

Right now however, there is no content to judge. You have nothing. It's just emotions being presented as facts in folks' heads which led to SUCH an embaressing twitter blurb being written — I honestly wanted to cry when I read that.

There was no reason for that reaction. Not the caution, but the meanness that came from some fans.

I'm chalking it up to old bitter fans, new bitter fans, fans who don't know who Robbie is, fans who still for some reason think Jensen is a homophobe, fans who wanted to be "right" and were embaressed when they weren't ("right" being "oooh they're going to come out with a continuation as their first SPN project").

I will admit myself when I first saw it I went "wait... what?"

But I got over it, I sat down with myself, and gave a minute of thought to it to understand 1) why we're starting with this 2) what can come of it and 3) what are the good things we're already seeing like Robbie Thompson being involved.

I'm not saying I'm better than others who had their reservations, because this fandom did get put through the wringer last November and a few times before that. I understand the hesitancy. I understand the caution.

But what I did not understand were the trending comments that put Jensen and Dee on blast. I did not understand people complaining to them. I did not understand people celebrating that the twitter blurb made us look like idiots.

Sorry I really lost myself in all of that. I'm really tired, I've been awake since 3 a.m. and had no sleep lol.

To answer your thing: I think Jensen and Dee will actually weather it.

Because even though I just said what I said, the ball is actually in their court, and I do believe they'll do some magic. Bad press around a series only sticks around if it is, in fact, a bad series.

It took less than a night talking about the potential of the show not from only me but from several others as well for other fans to pause and maybe give this a cautious optimism.

Imagine if this series comes and it is something amazing (which, I think it will be good. yes yes CW this and CW that but whatever. It is what it is).

I think we as a fandom forget that SPN means just as much to Jensen as it does to us (most of us — some of "fans" are still extremely bitter or just weird and don't actually watch or care about the show and only want to criticize so... idk what they are doing here).

And it's in that care, in watching the last two years of interviews of him talking about a continuation, him voicing his excitement in 2018 over wanting to help tell the Wayward Sister story, his "I have Dean", his insistence that nothing stays dead on SPN, his overall love and devotion for the show, for the crew, for the cast that I personally think he will 1) push through this and show us just what he can do and 2) prove the trust we had in him was justified.

And I do trust him, and Dee, and Robbie, and everyone else involved in making this. I think their drive is going to push through this weirdly annoying reaction that spawned.

Their love and passion and respect for the material I think will give us something very special, and I think they know that as well!

9. Have they made each other cry?

Short answer: Yes

Long answer:

Karma knew that Gakushuu would be a difficult person to live with and that he was sensitive despite his hard exterior, but that didn’t mean he didn’t get annoyed too sometimes.

That night they were arguing about who knows what, saying things they didn’t mean, when the insults became half truths and eventually full truths that became insults. Karma said something along the lines of “Oh, and it’s not my fault your dad didn’t raise you right but it your fault that you’re becoming exactly like him, don’t ask me why I’ll need therapy more than twice a week after this.”

If it hadn’t already clicked to Gakushuu that they were fighting fighting before then, now he got the message. He ran out of the room without another word and Karma had to pace to cool down. Karma decided to sleep on the couch that night and only realized Shuu went off crying the next morning, when the air was cold and rigid and Shuu had tear stains under his eyes. Karma didn’t say anything though, he didn’t really know how to fix it. They ended up spending that whole day apart and eventually had a long talk.

Gakushuu made Karma cry when he told him they’d probably end up breaking up. Karma was joking about meeting Shuu’s mom and Shuu just laughed saying he didn’t think they’d make it that far. That messed with Karma’s perception of permanence and what he thought they were. He thought they were gonna get married some day and that they were going to live together and... what? He tried to ask Gakushuu why he thought they wouldn’t make it and Shuu seemed unbothered. He said something about how they were incompatible in many ways and how they were both handfuls and how life would get harder and how Karma probably wouldn’t be able to handle all the weird changes in Gakushuu’s life because of how the businesses was booming. They said goodnight after that and Karma found himself outside at 3am taking a walk. He didn’t realize he was crying till he came home and Shuu asked him why he was crying. His first instinct was to say he was doing drugs but that would get them nowhere. Instead he said he didn’t want to talk about it, and they went to bed. He could think about permanence another day. And he did, they talked about both that and their insecurities going forward to try to salvage their relationship. (I can imagine that this is a few years into their relationship.)

10. Write a ~300 word argument scene for them.

11. What causes them to fight?

The lighthearted answer would be: anything and everything. They fight over how many pillows they need but always laugh about it in the end.

Another answer would be: the fact that at the beginning of their relationship they were insecure about themselves. You know you really shouldn’t get into a relationship until you love yourself enough, at least in most cases. But for them I’m guessing that the mutual attraction was enough for them to get together, which isn’t always bad b u t for them they had a lot to unpack. It’s surprising and maybe even kinda toxic that they stayed together after the first part of their relationship but now they’re happy. I can imagine that they’re happier as adults at least, and that they still do fight over small things like the TV volume but those fights don’t even count as fights. It’s just a little conversation to keep them going yknow?

12. Do they have differing political opinions?

Kinda? Gakushuu is a businessman and probably took a course called “creating capitalism” so we can assume he’s pro capitalism, and on the other hand Karma joined the bureaucracy in Japan (and Japan is, if I’m not mistaken, a socialist country) so he’s probably at least pro socialism.

I just want to comment on how this is cool because Gakushuu being pro capitalism is a solo player as the CEO with the most shares of his corporation. Whereas Karma who we assume is pro socialism works as a bureaucrat for the government. Which is cool because capitalism is more about individuals climbing the corporate ladder and whatnot whereas socialism is more of a government intervention thing where the government has control and places limitations. (There’s way more to it but I tried to badly summarize.) So they’re both doing very well in their respective economies. That being said, we could go into the capitalist tendencies in Japan but we won’t! AHEM THE MAIN QUESTION WAS ABOUT POLITICS BUT I WARPED IT SORRY THEYRE PROBABLY BOTH MORE LIBERAL BUT I WONT GO INTO THAT.

Anyways to finish off explaining the “kinda” I answered with, I said kinda because I don’t think they feel strongly enough about their own (preferred) economies to argue about it. Though maybe Karma will complain about some of the disparity in wealth he sees between Gakushuu and others but honestly I don’t see them caring much, since they have the luxury of living in their own bubble of karushuu happy fun. I hope this blurb made sense.

13. Name something they would never do for the other person

Gakushuu would never give up his ambitions to be with Karma. Sounds sad but after letting go of some of those insecurities that were there at first, he’s found his self worth and won’t give up all his hard work for anyone. Is that selfish? Personally I don’t think so, because it would be selfish for someone to ask him to let go of his dreams for them. Karma would never do that anyway, so. By give up his ambitions for Karma I mean like if Karma were to ask Gakushuu to drop his work or him, he’d be dropping Karma.

Karma would never settle down entirely because Gakushuu asked him to. This is similar to the first one but I don’t think he wants to calm down and live in another tropical country and retire young just because they have enough money you know? Not like Gakushuu would ever ask him to slow down but if he did then Karma would still probably work a few jobs because of how boring life would be without something to do. This is basically like Gakushuu’s but I feel like Karma’s is less intense and he wouldn’t break up with Gakushuu right away because of this.

14. What would be a dealbreaker

This is the same as the last one I think. Telling the other to slow down and pick between their passions (for work lmao) or them. Since it’s the same ish for both of them I don’t think there would be that much of an issue though. Maybe if Karma killed Shuu’s cat then that would be a dealbreaker, who knows.

15. What are traits they dislike in one another?

Karma dislikes how Gakushuu is a workaholic and Gakushuu hates how Karma is taller than him :P also how quick he is at making impulsive decisions. HmMm maybe also how Karma snores- that’s not even a trait i- anywayyyyssss

16. If they broke up, what would be their opinions of each other.

Oh boy. I’ve thought about this for not karushuu things too so here’s my take on this:

Karma would consider Gakushuu as an addition to the toxic people in his life. First his parents, then some of his teachers, and now his first boyfriend. He’d remember the happy moments they had together but quickly try to replace them with the sadder memories. He’d try his best to paint Gakushuu is the worst lighting, he’d villainize (not a word but shh) him so he could go on thinking he didn’t do anything wrong and it was Gakuhsuu’s toxicness that tore them apart.

Gakushuu wouldn’t think of Karma. Not after a bit of time, not because Karma never came to mind again after the breakup, but because any thoughts of Karma would be illegal. Honestly I can see him thinking that his time with Karma was an era of weakness. He can’t go back to that weak state, not even in his memories, so he doesn’t. (Well maybe in the middle of the night some days he does but he’d never admit to that.) I hope my grammar here was bearable lmao.

I’ll confess my sins. When I skipped the first chapters of Capri I got stuck on Laurent’s description as spoiled and similar to overripe fruit. So i was like ah. Royal Dudley Dursley with a blonde curly wig. Sounds about right. I finally saw some fan art and was like??? Who is this anemic Victorian vampire legolas persona?? Honestly tho in an alternate universe where Auguste doesn’t die and Laurent still dislikes sports but enjoys Veres sweet meats and his metabolism is only the slightest bit slower Laurent is absolutely getting chubby. And Damen. Smh he manages to be shadiest bitch while also being appreciating. Would he insult an overweight courtier who never touched a sword? Absolutely. Would he respect a meaty sumo ringer able to throw Damen around like a rag doll? Absolutely. He seems to appreciate multiple types of bodies just fine (muscled gladiators, frail slaves, sturdy vaskian women) so I feel like he’d also appreciate curvier partners as long as they. Well know how to use their body yk. Oh and what about chubby jokaste? We don’t know enough about akielon beauty standards at all. Sure slaves are probably mostly slender and frail to add to the submissive aesthetic (tho I do remember damens fixation on his female slaves big boobs, dude is far from subtle as always). You mentioned Dudley, whose weight and fat (derogatory) tendencies are accentuated throughout the entire Harry Potter saga. I think—and this is my personal belief, it is not something anyone else has to agree with—that part of what makes Laurent interesting and redeemable to many readers has to do with the fact that he’s beautiful*. I don’t think many people would be willing to admit that, but Laurent’s pretty privilege as a fictional character is similar to Draco Malfoy’s (in fanon) or other morally grey villains/characters’. Ugly characters are harder to forgive, for some reason.

This got me thinking that had Pacat written Laurent as canonically fat, there would be a lot of stuff going on in Damen’s head that I don’t think we’d be able to excuse as easily as we excuse other (quite horrible) thoughts of his. But also, like I mentioned above, I think Laurent would have a harder time proving to some readers that he’s not Dudley, that he’s not just a stereotype of selfishness and greed and other things fatness is associated with (like childishness or an inability to take accountability for one’s actions). This would happen not because he’s fat, but rather because we see the world through Damen’s eyes. And Damen is. . . Quite opinionated.

You mentioned Damen would be judgmental of someone’s weight based on their ability to fight. So, like you pointed out, he’d make fun of a useless in battle courtier but not of a Sumo wrestler. I think in Book 1 Damen would make fun of anything and everyone, but I do understand where you’re coming from with that statement. It makes me wonder what Damen would think of people with a mobility/physical disability. Or even with learning difficulties. Or just about anyone that, according to him, doesn’t contribute to society. If you can’t be a warrior or a bed slave, and if you’re not in a condition to be a peasant and plow fields, and if you don’t have royal blood in your veins. . . I have a hard time picturing Damen being sympathetic.

What I liked the most was the ending of your ask, where you went on to add little worldbuilding details. Like I said yesterday, I wish canon was more detailed so we could maybe have something to hold onto when we make certain claims. It’s hard to say which parts of Damen’s thought process are entirely his (as a prince with a lot of privilege) and which ones have to do with his culture. Pacat has pointed out some to us, like the fact that Akielons don’t enjoy certain “spectacles” of the body, like pet rings or public sex, but they do enjoy staring at bodies when they’re wrestling or performing physical activities unrelated to sex. Other things remain little mysteries, in my opinion. Do all bed slaves have the same body type? Do women wrestle? How does marriage work in Akielos? What is everyone else’s opinion on fat people? I am not saying Damen is the only character who, in the historic period where Captive Prince is set, would have fatphobic thoughts. If Damen was fat, Laurent would be the first one to use that against him, especially in Book 1. I just think Damen fits the fatphobic mold better because he’s described as this hypermasculine character, very into war (I think the blurb of the book calls him a warrior prince?) and manly things. Which is not to say war is inherently manly. Which is not to say Laurent isn’t manly. Which is not to say. . . whatever.

Captive Prince is a fantasy trilogy, set in. . . the past. Concepts such as fatphobia or toxic masculinity are not exactly applicable, but I think it’s fun to explore Damen’s character through his flaws. Laurent has a lot of flaws, but Damen’s are sometimes confused with virtues. In my opinion, they’re at their best when they’re being disgustingly horrible to each other.

I’m not mad at all, don’t worry! I know Yoshida is... a touchy subject among female YGO fans, to say the least, but I really don’t mind expanding on my thoughts. I was originally going to just put the Eliphas part under a cut for length but... I have a lot of thoughts on this, so I’m going to put most of it under a cut for the sake of peoples’ feeds. As always, people can rb if they want, idc.

This ask is about this vent post, which in turn is me piggybacking off this post I reblogged. The post I reblogged in particular being a very common plight among wlw shounen fans, and is why I overwhelmingly prefer shoujo to the point that YGO is quite literally the only shounen series I like besides one other shounen manga with a near all female cast.

Perhaps (though many will disagree with me) saying Yoshida hates women was a bit harsh. However, he has explicitly said in a blurb at the back of a volume of the Zexal manga that he very rarely, if at all, writes women when left to his own devices - to the point that the artist literally had to convince him to make the manga-only character Luna female because there were no female characters contributing to the story.

So, at the very least, Yoshida is very much not fond of writing women into his stories, whether intentional or not on his part (because what he said very much reads to me like he doesn’t intend to not write women, however: unintentional misogyny is still misogyny, and I think reflects subconscious views he has on women as a result).

As for how this plays into IV and Shark’s relationship and my feelings towards it: I’m gonna be blunt, HellShark is one of my absolute favorite ships in the franchise despite the lack of content I make for it. IV V Nasch in particular is a duel that means a lot to me wrt my own trauma and older unhealthy coping mechanisms as reflected in IV’s character. 

However.

It’s also very, very hard to ignore that a lot of their canonical, on screen interactions are directly at the expense of Rio. The entire foundation for IV and Ryoga’s relationship is that IV set Rio on fire, that Ryoga wants revenge for Rio, and, in II that IV wants to make things up to Ryoga for what he did to Rio.

Yet, Rio Kamishiro herself is never present for any of this. We are never  oncegiven an opinion from Rio about what IV did to her. At best, we have it mentioned in a 3Ds game that isn’t canon that she wants to talk things out with IV, but nothing in the anime itself. This is a very blatant red flag. Rio spends 80 episodes in a coma for this, wakes up from said coma, then is put into another coma before she can sort things out. In general, Rio has very little, if any agency of her own from the time her and Shark start realizing they’re Barians until the Barians start attacking Heartland.

This also plays into my comment about Megumi Han, Rio’s voice actress. The friend of mine who got me to watch Zexal watched it herself as it aired, and mentioned that Han accidentally slipped up/leaked Rio being Merag right before the Barian backstory arc. Because of her then being put into a coma right when things started to involve the Kamishiros and her being shown with IV in the ED, this lead to a rumor coming out that her and IV were supposed to talk things out in canon, but they wrote Rio’s character out as punishment. However, it’s just that: a rumor, and nothing more, so take it with a grain of salt.

As for Eliphas:

Juuuuust so I’m not talking completely out of my ass (as I often do), I’ll be citing this article by Masami Tamagawa, particularly the subsection of it linked therein. 

The rundown is: family structures are a very key cornerstone in Japanese society, with a very distinctive focus on relation to the father. Keeping this structure in tact is very key for career movement; particularly for men, who are traditionally viewed as the breadwinners while the wives stay home. Risking straying from this structure not only puts your family at risk, but yourself as well - leading to many LGBT JP people to stay closeted.

With this in mind, Eliphas is the known creator of Astral, and also explicitly created Barian when he banished all Astral beings who had chaos in them so that Astral World could continue to prosper. This already lays the foundation for an allegory to conservatism down, but in particular the way he, Astral’s patriarch, talks about Yuma’s chaotic (gay) relationship with Astral and how Yuma defends himself goes much further in this.

The foundation for Eliphas’ stance and rhetoric on keeping Astral away from Yuma isn’t the “impurity” of their love, though it is a major component, but rather: their love, and Yuma encouraging Astral to think for himself and find his own purpose detracts him for furthering the prosperity of Astral World. Because of Astral’s relationship, he is denying Eliphas, his family, the opportunities to further society. Afaik, this is a very major point for JP conservatism as a whole - however, my source mostly focuses on the family aspect, so I will refrain from going further on that.

Yuma’s defense to this basically boils down to “we’ve argued, but all I have ever truly done to Astral is love him.”

The article linked also goes into what an extreme generation gap Japan now has with regards to viewing LGBT cultures, and cites the 90s gay boom to exposure in the identities as a reason. Yuma’s final line in this defense reads very strongly as a generational argument/parallel to me:

Eliphas’ rhetoric is furthered when Yuma summons Hope, a direct symbol of Yuma and Astral’s relationship:

He refers to it as an “abnormality born from irregularity”, directly accusing Hope of only existing at all for deviating from the social norms, which is bad. Yuma again refutes that there is nothing wrong with Hope, just as there is nothing wrong with him and Astral being together.

This is all just from the first episode of this duel. I’m sure I could go on, but I’ll be blunt: while I like the themes and allegory of Yuma V Eliphas, I hate the pacing and don’t even want to skim through more. 

However, I do feel based on everything above, combined with the two being canon in the manga also written by Yoshida (with an argument I can very easily make that they’re canon in the finale of the anime as well - but that’s for another post), and again, Alit canonically being in love with Yuma being used as a point of sympathy for him and the Barians’ situation, that Yuma and Astral are a very deliberate and very intentional LGBT narrative. 

As someone whos gay relationship was recently sabotaged by her GF’s parents, all of Yuma’s points hit EXTREMELY close to home for me in particular - and, I’ll be frank: I’m friends with a lot of Zexal fans in gay relationships, and literally all of them have picked up on having the exact same sentiments as Yuma, be it to someone close or society at large - at some point in their lives.

KOTLC: Flashback Review [WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

Keeper of the Lost Cities: Flashback by Shannon Messenger ★★☆☆☆

That little blurb/intro in the beginning? Hmmm, intense. Like, way more directly and upfront intense than the rest of the series has been, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing.

Alvar’s sentencing was a really interesting choice, but I feel like bringing in all the Vackers was a little unnecessary. There were just too many opinions to follow, and it did make Fallon Vacker a little less of the interesting enigma that he previously was.

Fitz’s outburst wasn’t totally uncalled for, but he could have definitely dialed it back. I mean, he wasn’t as close to Alvar as Biana was, and his younger sister wasn’t reacting as explosively. This does show that Fitz is consistent (his outburst in Exile), but it did feel a little repetitive when he kept yelling out about how much he hated Alvar. We get it dude, Alvar sucks. But so do Lady Gisela, Quan Song, and Mai Song. And let’s not forget that Wylie’s just scarred, after what happened to Prentice and his mom.

Whom the heck is Luzia Vacker? Why bring in another Vacker only to make them relevant for a little bit and then take them out again? We, as a fandom, already went through that with Kenric, and trust be we’re all still sobbing about that. Not to forget Marella, who is suddenly relevant again?

Dex’s technopathic skills. Goodbye everyone else’s abilities, Dex is a genius who is finally, getting some sort of credit, even if it’s from the council, and not his friends, I am desperate and will take it, at this point.

Speaking of Dex, it was nice to see him standing up for himself against Alvar.

And Fitz is mad again, and yelling at Dex and then Keefe, and then Sophie, quiznak, dude, anger management and a therapist will do you wonders.

Also, why didn’t Sophie stand up for Dex? She did *technically* side with Alvar’s sentencing, she spoke with Keefe and Ro about it. Besides, Dex is her best friend, who was there for her when Fitz and Biana definitely were not. Dex was also her first friend and they’ve been through a lot together.

This would’ve also helped with fixing their relationship a little after the events of Nightfall, and would’ve been a stronger argument for women and men being friends without having to make things romantic. (This can *technically* be said for Fitz or Keefe, but they’ve both been hinted as the possible end games.)

This just disappointed me so much, because Biana had finally come so far in getting to know Dex and so had Fitz, but they just couldn’t see any other perspectives.

The little Ro and Keefe bet was super cute. It was nice to see Keefe goofing around again, and Ro’s personality is just so fun.

Alden and Della wanting to get to know their son again? Valid, they are completely valid for that, except for the fact that they seem a little too interested in getting to know Alvar and a little less in oh he was a murdered and he kidnapped my son’s girlfriend and her best friend and tortured them, but he doesn’t even remember now, so that’s okay.

Keefe defending Sophie was cute, as always, but what was that whole thing with “Especially Foster” and the look he and Alden shared? I’m calling shenanigans. Let’s break it down:

Theory: Keefe knows about Fitz’s crush on Sophie and doesn’t want him to hurt her. ( See Exile. )

Easily possible, so easily possible. And this is aside from Keefe just generally defending Sophie regularly.

Theory: Fitz knows about Keefe’s crush on Sophie and he knows that Keefe knows about his crush on Sophie.

Also not that far fetched, they’re best friends and probably talked before Keefe joined the Neverseen.

Theory: Alden asked Keefe to back off.

It would explain the whole look thing but Alden’s never really showed particular interest in that kind of thing. My shipper heart wants to agree with this, but realistically? Probably not true.

Theory: Alden and Keefe are both remembering the events of Exile.

This is probably more likely, considering that Fitz threw a huge tantrum there too and both Alden and Keefe tried to calm him down. This is my best bet about what that whole looking thing was.

Quiznak, who actually believed Alvar when he was whining about being innocent? I have to give it to Fitz, he had a good point about Alvar’s acting being intense. As it turned out, Alvar wasn’t acting, but he did join the Neverseen again. No surprise there.

This was a pretty polarizing event. If you ask me, it didn’t make sense for them to capture Alvar and not gain anything from it or for him to claim innocence for an entire book only to regain his memories and rejoin the villains. The two actions cancelled each other out and left it so that it was as if they’d never captured him in the first place.

Weapons? Uh, quick question, what the heck? Sophie’s spent this entire time ( like six books worth of time ) wanting to be different from the Neverseen, Vespera, and Lady Gisela. She’s even concerned, at one point, that Project Moonlark made her a natural killer, but she just throws all of that out the window and starts up an initiative to fight back?

This seemed really out of character. I don’t know what else to say, especially since elves’ minds can’t handle violence? And Sophie proposed an initiative centered around violence?

What was that entire fight scene? Sophie inflicts, but whoops, there go Fitz, Grizelle and Sandor? Sophie’s outnumbered, so she calls Dex and Wylie? I’m sorry, did we miss something? Wylie wasn’t really a main character prior to Flashback, which is fine, but how is hanging out with Dex all of a sudden?

Side note, Wylie was great, he kicked some Neverseen butt and gave it to them, it was probably one of the better moments in the book.

I feel like we had more of Sophie getting all hot and bothered over Fitz rather than actual plot.

The death of Umber was very anticlimactic, but I have a theory that she’s actually Lady Zillah, Tam’s Shade Mentor. Call it a hunch, Shannon Messenger hasn’t introduced characters to Sophie and/or Mr. Forkle and more of the gang unless they’re important to the plot.

Lady Gisela, Marella, Brant, Magnate Leto, Tiergan, Quentin, Physic/Livy, Amy, Vika, Stina, Luzia, Tarina, Cladfael, Wylie, need I go on?

BUT the majority of the book was just Sophie and Fitz flirting while on bed rest. They spent way too long recovering, and I preferred Nightfall’s way of handling an injury in one half of the love triangle, even if  Keefe’s my favorite character. Nothing happened while they were lying there, which is so unreasonable, because when Keefe was out of the picture, they went to Nightfall, but when Fitz got injured, Sophie insisted on being bedside the entire time?

There was also the matter of Fitz choosing Sophie over his family which, yeah, was kind messed up. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Biana was hurting too. Alden and Della were hurting too. Honestly, Sophie was probably the least affected here, especially considering that she pitied Alvar and believed that he shouldn’t be punished for things he didn’t remember doing.

How was Sophie more injured than Fitz when he needed to be on bed rest and sedated constantly? I know she’s the main character and all, but it’s okay to let the other characters develop too. In that sense, Fitz has had the least development, while Biana was injured and got over it, Keefe lost who he was and is still trying to find himself, Linh got over her fear of her powers, Dex acknowledged his crush on Sophie and got over it, and now Tam is starting to get over his hesitance when it comes to using his powers. Even Stina’s getting over her prejudices, but no such development from Fitz.

He’s still focused on being cognates and solely that, but he has so much more potential! He might not be my favorite character, but I know there’s more to him than “I’m in love with Sophie now,” and “I want to be Cognates” and “I hate Alvar, ra-ra, now I’m mad.”

I was hoping to see more development especially since the book seemed to focus on Fitz so much, but I guess not.

Sophie has a bodyguard from every single intelligent species? There was a tumblr post that seemed to describe this perfectly, about how by the end of the series the entire Keeper crew will have at least 98127354392 bodyguards.

Not going to lie, that’s a bit extreme. Five bodyguards? One from each species?

It’s also definitely not helping the idea that all of the species are equal, it makes the elves seem far more superior, and that’s not in Sophie or the Black Swan’s favor. In my opinion, that was unnecessary. ( Especially Bo, but that’s only because he was a huge jerk. )

Whenever Keefe was there, it seemed like everyone was hating on him or he was moping. There’s more to his character than the screw-up troublemaker, hasn’t he proved himself yet?

The monocle pendant was a mistake, and I’ll say that for the people in the back. He didn’t give it to her so they could track her on purpose. The poor boy’s smitten with her, he would never do that. He just didn’t think it through, and it resulted in this.

“...and then I wasn’t even there to help you fight, because I promised Alden . . .’

‘Promised Alden what?’ Sophie asked, glancing between the two of them.

Keefe shook his head. ‘It doesn’t matter’”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback).

Guys, I have no idea what’s going on here, but I really don’t like it. They shouldn’t be sidelining the one person who worked with the Neverseen.

Shadowflux. The seemingly unnecessary introduction to an already complex plot. Thoughts:

Unnecessary. The plot was already complex enough, and it didn’t even touch on the Lodesar Initiative that two books spent worrying about. Not to mention it didn’t help connect the title to the plot in any way either.

Not to mention the fact it focused on the echoes way more than the rest of the plot, which has been built up for so long now.

There were barely any interactions with the whole gang, or really any other characters other than Fitz. We didn’t even get much time with Edaline and Grady, who bonded with Sophie in Nightfall and every book prior to Flashback.

“‘Cool. Now how about you try that again with the truth?’”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback). This was really cute, and honestly, I was so glad that they brought Keefe back in. He (and Dex) have a really great way of reducing the stress and tension and just grounding these larger than life characters. I would’ve loved more Dex and Keefe time, but I’m not writing the series so…

“‘Did you let Fitz win?’

‘Psh, like I’d ever do that!’

‘I don’t know . . . ,’ Ro told him—and he sent her a death glare.

‘That’s different,’ he insisted.

‘Not really,’ she grumbled. ‘But it’s your call.”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback). What could this possible mean? ( could you hear the sarcasm? ) I really don’t like the idea of Fitz or Keefe just giving up like that, with zero communication. They were supposed to be best friends, but instead, Keefe’s avoiding Fitz and Fitz is blaming Keefe and just being a total jerk about his mom. Get your act together!

I was disappointed that Silveny asked for Fitz before Keefe, considering that she knew about Keefe first.

Theory: Silveny can pick up on Sophie’s feelings, and with Fitzphie canon now, she probably sensed Sophie’s feelings for Ftiz and responded.

“Keefe flashed the smuggest of smiles. ‘It’s because I make everything better.’

‘Like giving Sophie the pendant that helped the Neverseen find her?’ Fitz snapped back”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback). So no best friend bonding then?

Ro standing up for Keefe slayed me. It was so nice to see her taking Sophie’s place as moral support and being there for him whenever Fitzphie go too intense or Lord Pretentious started acting up.

Not to mention Tinker, who was brought up once and then never really mentioned again, with the exception of the null. I hope she’ll be back, otherwise that entire section/chapter would be unnecessary.

Okay, this is the end of part 1! Wow, that’s a lot longer than I’d planned, guess I just had a lot to say. Let me know what y’all think in the comments below! Arualt’s Socio-Economic System

Perhaps you’ve read my author blurb and you’re wondering how communism fits into This Curious Island. Perhaps you’re just learning now that communism might fit into This Curious Island and you’re thinking about the fallacious circular political spectrum taught in some schools where left and right meet at the bottom at their equivalent extremes of communism and fascism. Hopefully you weren’t taught that, but it’s possible that you have a poor opinion of communism all the same. I’m not going to try to change your mind on this lighthearted post about an accessible and charming work of fiction, so I digress and refocus: What is Arualt’s economic system like? Here’s a longer segment from chapter 10 to explain:

Yelmy notices [Anthony’s] struggle. “Is something bothering you? Are you feeling okay?” “I just—” he starts; “I don’t have any money.” Yelmy laughs. Perhaps you think this reaction is cruel, but even Anthony can tell that it is not disingenuous; it is an innocent and friendly laugh; but he is certainly confused by it. “You don’t need any money,” Yelmy says. “One, you don’t really buy anything at [the place we’re going to].” “Well,” chips in Cybelline, “I think there are things you can buy.” Yelmy ignores her. “Two, you don’t need money, really—I mean, to buy anything.” “You don’t need it, but it’s still a thing.” “Yes.” Yelmy throws Cybelline a look. “But there’s no need to complicate things.” “You don’t need money?” Anthony wrinkles his brow. “Like, money’s still a thing,” says Yelmy, but it’s clear she’s beginning to tread waters beyond her depth. “But it’s not the only thing.” “You really don’t know how . . . y’know . . . the economy works?” asks Cybelline. Anthony shakes his head. “My . . . em, my parents were always griping about money? Said I was costing them more than they could afford.” The girls’ eyes widened. “Firstly,” says Cybelline. “I’m sorry.” “Your ‘parents’,” says Yelmy with some acid, “were just being cruel.” Haltingly, the girls explain Arualt’s socio-economic system to Anthony. The main points are these: Money is still exchanged for goods and services, but goods and services are not denied to those who do not have money. If you are able, you pay. If not, the vendor or serviceperson will be paid by the community. The girls don’t know exactly how this works and it’s not vital to the story for you to, either, but it has to do with taxes and good faith. You may be thinking, You cannot trust people to report what they are owed honestly! or If money isn’t required, why would anyone choose to use it? but if you are thinking these things, you would be forgetting that Arualt is not like where you live. Is it better? Probably, because nobody goes hungry, homeless, or unclothed—but then, nobody in Arualt can aspire to be a trillionaire, because such a concept is wildly beyond their scope, so perhaps you might think that that’s an unfair trade off. Hopefully not. Sometimes people in Arualt are dishonest in commerce, but such fraud is actually quite rare. As rare as shoplifting or tax fraud is in your world: not enough to crumble the system. More dangerous is the weed of classism that folks of a certain unfortunate bent water and tend in the cracks of society; the kind of people that say, “If you can’t use money, you’re not as good as us.” Most people in Arualt are not like this, but there are enough of them for the idea to permeate beyond their mean little circles. The Pears are this kind of people, of course, but they are this way hypocritically, which is horribly tragic; with so many children and so many bad and expensive habits (Mr. Pear especially), there is nothing Mr. Pear’s wage from the office where he works nor Mrs. Pear’s wage from being a stay-at-home parent can do to keep up. The third thing you may be wondering is, If you don’t need money, why would you work? and the answer can be found in a simple thought experiment: Would you like to do nothing all day, every day? Certainly there are less soul-sucking jobs in Arualt than in your world, perhaps less fast food joints because only so many people enjoy preparing easy burgers, but the important thing is that most jobs that have bad reputations where you are do not have the same reputations in this world because yeah, that’s right! the workers don’t need to be there! What does this mean for employers? It means fostering a good and enriching work environment; it means time off and benefits; it means promoting from within and so on and so forth. Also more things are jobs in Arualt, lots of things a person doesn’t necessarily need to “be employed” for, but there’s no need to get into that here. “And, like, everyone kind of gets paid in the end,” concludes Yelmy weakly. Cybelline adds, “And nobody asks at check out, so you really don’t need to worry.”

Does this system make sense to you? What do you think of how it is described? Is there a reason Arualt uses this system beyond the political bent of its author? Yes, but you probably won’t learn it in the first book.

SUPPORTIVE SIBS AND JEALOUS STEVE PLS MAKE THAT A THING THAT HAPPENS

[A/N]: Ask and ye shall recieve anon! Anon’s refrencing this post. If you have no clue what my Triplet AU is, here’s the original post, and here’s the tag.

The Avengers were gathered in the lab trying to track down AIM, who had been stealing parts for something, and escaping before the Avengers could get there. They’re all ready to go as soon as they get a call for another AIM attack, so for now all they could do was watch as Iron Man, Tonio, and Tony work together to figure out how AIM is making so many clean getaways.

Steve had no clue what they’re saying at all. Even Bruce seemed to be lost, because when the Starks get in the zone they only need to say maybe every third word out loud. Anyway, Steve just stared at Tony’s face scrunched up in concentration and tried to avoid sighing happily at every little movement Tony made. Sam had been telling him to cut that shit out and make a move for weeks.

Steve still made a little gasp of delight when he saw Tony’s eyes widen and he smiled and he made a “eureka” face. Steve loved the look of pure joy on Tony’s face and the excited flash of brilliance he got when he had a breakthrough.

Tony dashed over to the computer, allowing Steve to appreciate the tight jeans he always wore, and  typed some sort of algorithm out. Within moments a map of the city opened up and Tony gestured to it excitedly.

“Tony you’re a genius.” Tonio said, while Tony shrugged.

“It isn’t anything you or Tasha couldn’t do.”

Iron Man put a large gauntleted hand on Tony’s shoulder

“Don’t sell yourself short, Tony, you’re fantastic.” Tony blushed, and muttered something under his breath along the lines of:

“Maybe not in front of the other Avengers guys.”

That’s when Steve started thinking.

On the one hand, Tonio and Tasha tended to compliment  and brag about Tony a lot so it wasn’t weird that Iron Man would too. He was close to the three of them. Hell, Steve wanted to shower Tony with compliments all the time.

Then again Steve was very very very head over heels for Tony, so maybe he was an outlier here? Or was he representative of the data?

Not that the only people who would compliment Tony were people who were in love with him. Or that Steve only thought Tony was amazing because he was in love with him.

Where was this train of thought going again?

Steve shook his head to clear it as the Avengers went out to deal with AIM. He was probably overreacting.

A few days later, the Avengers were able to use what the Starks had discovered to stop some of AIM’s thefts, but they were no closer to figuring out what they were up to

Steve was a little annoyed, and mulling over AIM and Iron Man and Tony when he spotted a newspaper stand across the street.

“Oh what is this nonsense.” He said taking a look at the front page of some magazine.

Iron Man flew over and landed behind Steve

“C’mon, Winghead, you know you’ve just gotta ignore the stupid tabloids. Whatever it says is probably 100% pure crap.” He said.

“I’ll say.” Steve angrily turned around and showed the magazine to his teammate. The cover of the was an image of Tonio from a gala last week.

“Oh Cap, that is not the worst picture of Tonio ever taken. He’s actually got his clothes on in this one.”

“Not that, this!” Steve pointed to the blurb in the corner read The Hottest Stark’s best looks from the Charity Gala. “Tonio is not the hottest Stark. It’s Tony”

Iron Man stared at Steve in silence before nodding vigorously.

“Finally, another Intellectual. Anthony Edward Stark is the best looking of all the Starks. That is Iron Man’s official opinion and any time I say otherwise I am lying.”

At the time, Steve was happy for Iron Man’s enthusiastic agreement.

It wasn’t until later when he overheard Tony excitedly talking to Tonio.

“He said I’m the good looking one!” Tony bragged.

“Of course he did,” Tonio chuckled in response.

Steve promptly walked quickly in the other direction, thoughts buzzing through his head.

Were they talking about Iron Man? Could Iron Man really openly say one of his bosses was better than the others? The Starks wouldn’t fire him over something so petty, but Iron Man should probably be more neutral, if for no other reason than Tonio and Tasha would prank him mercilessly.

Steve’s thoughts from the other day came flooding back. Was Iron Man in love with Tony? Did Tonio and Tasha know, and that was why they didn’t even joke about his reaction? Or were they together and keeping it a secret and only Tasha and Tonio knew.

Steve was pacing back and forth through the tower living room when and so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear Tony come up behind him until Tony shouted his name.

“Tony!” Steve stammered. “Uh um, do you need something?”

“Y-yeah. I’ve got those notes you missed from Professor Pym’s class while you were out, you know, saving the city.” Tony said, handing Steve a folder of neatly typed notes.

“Oh. Thanks.” Steve said.

“Do you want to go to a cafe or something?” Tony blurted out. “You know in case I did the thing again, with the notes. I can walk you through them.”

Tony was actually kind of terrible with notes. He tended to overestimate Steve’s base knowledge  and would leave out key information from the notes that he just assumed Steve would know already. Steve didn’t really mind though, because it meant he and Tony could spend hours together going over them.

“Yeah. Sure.” Steve said.

Tony looked at him expectantly for a solid minute.

“Oh! Oh you mean right now,” Steve stuttered, “Yeah, just, just give me a moment.”

Steve suggested a place in Brooklyn for it’s quiet atmosphere and not because he specifically wanted someplace far enough away that he could convince Tony to ride on the back of his bike.

Not at all.

Unfortunately, their Not-Study-Date was interrupted before it could even begin when something exploded as they were driving out.

“Thousand bucks says it’s AIM” Tony drawled.

“You don’t need that money.” Steve said as he turned the bike.

He dropped Tony off on the other side of the police perimeter with the bike and rushed in to join the fray. The other Avengers were there and so were a dozen AIM goons.

If Steve hit a little harder than he should’ve well, he was really looking forward to that Not-Study-Date. The AIM guys were fine. As unfashionable as their beekeeper suits were, they could at least take a hit.

“Captain,” Iron Man said, as they finished.up, “where’s Tony?”

“I left him over by the police perimeter.”  Steve explained.

Iron Man gave a curt nod and flew away. Steve sprinted after him to find Iron Man holding Tony bridal style and checking him over.

“I’m fine, jeez” Tony giggled. “You worry too much.”

“Can’t blame me for making sure. You can get into a lot of trouble if you’re left on your own.”

“Oh and you can’t?”

The whole scene looked… kind of intimate.

“Hey Cap!” Tony called as Iron Man set him down. “Wanna get back to what we were doing?”

“No.” Steve said. “I’m tired, I think I’m going to head back to the tower.”

Steve ignored Tony calling his name as he ran back to the Tower.

There was a soft knock at Steve’s door. Tony was standing in the hall and looking around nervously.

“Steve! You left the your bag. And your bike keys. And your bike. I didn’t bring your bike all the way up here obviously though I was thinking it could probably use some repairs or maybe upgrades and I brought it down to the lab if you don’t min-”

“Thanks Tony.” Steve said. Tony’s babbling trailed off to into an awkward silence.

“Can, I come in?” Tony asked.

“I don’t know, are you a vampire?”  Steve joked.  Tony visibly relaxed and stepped into the room.

“So, our date kind of got cut short by AIM. And I was wondering if you’d let me make it up to you.”

Before Steve could even blink, Tony stood up on his tiptoes and kissed him.

Steve kissed back for a few seconds before pushing Tony away.

“No. We can’t, Iron Man-” Steve started before Tony interrupted him

“You’re in love with Iron Man?”

“No, you are.” Steve sputtered. Tony’s brown eyes widened in shock.

“You think I’m in love with Iron Man?” Tony’s face was a mixture of disgust and shock. Steve could hear sniggering down the hall.

“You’re brother and sister do remember I have super hearing, right?” Steve asked. Tony blushed as footsteps the laughter and accompanying footsteps faded down the hall.

“I am very sorry for them,” Tony sighed, “and I am 100% not in love with Iron Man. He’s like a brother to all of us.”

“So you’re interested in me?” Steve asked slowly.

“Very much so.” Tony said blushing.

“Well,” Steve coughed, “We’re gonna be a thing, then let’s do this right. How about dinner, tomorrow night at 6?”

Tony beamed and Steve’s heart melted.

“Sounds good Steve.”

“I can’t believe he actually thought you were in love with Iron Man!” Tasha had been laughing about this for thirty minutes straight.

“Yeah and it’s your fault! You’re always bragging about me and coddling me as Iron Man.” Tony pouted.

“Awww,” Tasha said, coming around to give Tony a hug, “can’t we just want to show off our awesome little bro and make sure he’s okay?”

“Ten seconds,” Tony muttered, “You’ve got ten seconds on me.”

“Ten seconds and four inches.” Tonio corrected.

“I will hit you. You’re shins are not protected.”  

Tonio ruffled Tony’s hair as Tony glared at the two of them.

Michelle's Fashion Industry Pros and Cons series: Post #1

How many of you have ever felt personally victimized by the fashion industry?

Haven’t we all, in some way? Isn’t it wild to think that the fashion industry only allows in a small group of people? Like many, I’ve always had a love hate relationship with this industry. My favorite part about fashion is that it’s forever evolving, it changes because we evolve as human beings. Why stay the same when there’s so much to explore, in my opinion. As I sit here on NYE of 2020 I can’t help but to look back on my year, I can truly say that this is the first year that I felt my life had extreme ups and downs. I’m ending the year on a low, but that’s for another time when I have the energy to tell the story, for now let us stick to fashion. 

So the fashion industry, eh? All in all it hates my type, a petite-plus size gal, woohoo thank you, genes!! However, that’s never stopped me from dressing to express myself. In this series I talk about my love hate relationship with fashion, the pros and cons of the industry in my opinion and where I see myself fitting in. Spoiler alert, it’s not anywhere haha, but that’s what makes fashion so great you can mold it to fit you, but for some of us it takes some extra work to find items that work. I’m going to give one positive and one negative-opinionated blurb about the industry and fashion in general. I’ll start with the negative, because we should always leave on a positive note :)

The number one thing I hate about the industry is that it makes me feel like I’m intruding, like I’m not supposed to be there and everyone who’s in the know, lets you know you’re unwelcome. One time I was at the House of Blues in Chicago to see the band Marianas Trench, I went to see them by myself and if you’ve never been to a concert by yourself, I highly recommend, it feels spiritual, I promise. Anyway, I felt adventurous so I decided to walk up the stairs to see how far up I could go. I made it to the top level and it was almost nauseating on how high up it was. I will say it was pretty cool to see a concert from a bird’s eye view for a song or two, but that’s all I could stand before I started getting dizzy.   

Here’s the proof I was that high up haha. The lead singer, Josh Ramsay is in the back playing the drums, he was also singing while playing, pretty dang cool. 

As I was walking back down to the main level I got lost, (if you’ve never been into the House of Blues in Chicago they have a bunch of staircases with doors and actual doors that lead into rooms both types of doors look very similar.) I walked into one of those mystery doors to what I thought was the staircase I had used to walk up. Instead, I found myself in a room with a bunch of guys in business suits, who whipped their heads around to see who just walked through the door. All I remember is walking into a smokey room and all these guys were staring at me with puzzled looks, my anxiety got the best of me and I awkwardly waved and said “sorry, I’m trying to find the stairs,” turned around and left right away before they could even say anything. That's how the fashion industry makes me feel, like I’m walking in on something I have no business being a part of, which is a sucky feeling, if you know the feeling, hello I hope you’re doing well. I just want to let you know you’re not alone and I know how horrible the fashion industry makes you feel, and I’m sorry for both of us that this industry made us feel that way, but here we are against all odds thriving in it!!     One of my absolute favorite things about fashion is the creation of outfits and using articles of clothing that I already own. To me it’s a test to my creativity on how many outfits I can make using the same one item. Don’t get me wrong, I still buy new things to add to my wardrobe every once in a while, but  that’s few and far between, unless I’m super stressed or extremely emotional than watch out retail therapy, because here I come!! When I do make a purchase I try to make sure I can make at least three outfits with that one item before I finalize the purchase, well I usually try to do that. Sometimes you just buy things on a whim, and for me it usually becomes a staple in my wardrobe, I call it dumb luck. For example, when I was away at college I lived in a rural ass town in central Illinois, and trust me they’ll let you know you’re in central and not southern Illinois. There’s only a few places to shop for clothes in town, the biggest selection was at Walmart, which I frequented a lot, since well, you know there’s nothing really to do in a small town anyway. Honestly that’s how they get you with that one stop shop food and clothes in one place, hellz yeah!! I felt like I was always broke, but I would somehow always find money to browse the clothes section :) I normally only buy off the sales racks, because I took fashion merchandising classes and I know how things work, haha. This particular time, my attention was drawing me to this long shaggy vest, my first thought was, “This looks so 70s” then it reminded me of Penny Lane from the movie Almost Famous, so I knew it would be a smart addition to my wardrobe, because you can’t go wrong with anything fuzzy and warm, especially if it reminds you of one of your favorite movies. 

That whim purchase has now become one of my most prized possessions and a wardrobe staple. Do you ever do that math thing to figure out how much it cost to wear that one item you purchased? So lets take that shaggy 70s vest and say I wore it 10 times and made 10 different outfits with it, you take how much you paid for it, which was $26 and divide it by 10, so every time I wore that vest it was $2.60 a wear. Not too bad in my opinion and totally worth the buy!! That is one of my absolute favorite things about fashion, the ability to keep using the same piece for different outfits. And the more you wear that piece the more you’re getting your money’s worth!! Here are 3 outfits using that shearling faux fur vest.

Sommer’s Sarcastic Writing Challenge

Hey y’all I don’t know how but I have made it to 200 followers! I want to thank each one of you for your follow and your encouragement and thank you for reading my stories. Still being new-ish to the writing scene it really means a lot that y’all have taken a liking to me. I never thought I’d make it to 100 followers let along 200. So, to celebrate this milestone of mine I will be doing two things I have never done before and am excited to do. First I’m doing a writing challenge and to bring it home, its going to be a sarcastic writing challenge.

Rules:

Send in an ask with a prompt and a backup one just incase.

If you could, it would be nice to know who you plan on writing for. i.e. Dean x reader

You can write for any supernatural character or actor. I’ll throw in marvel because I do enjoy those as well and have neglected my marvel people as of late. I do ask though no wincest, sorry I just don’t agree with it. Also, reader inserts or OFC’s only. No ships only because there are some I don’t like and I’d prefer not to name any so I don’t hurt anyone’s feelings. I get it you like what you like and you are entitled to that.

Can be fluff, angst, smut, flangst, or any combo of the three. I love all three. If you want to write an AU go for it I love those as well.

There is no word limit. Write what your heart desires whether it be a drabble or 9000 words do it. Go for it. I just ask that if its over 1000 you insert the keep reading link.

I know there are a lot that say not to have it part of a series unless it’s the beginning of one, but hey if you can work it into an ongoing series of yours do it. Send me a link to the whole series so I can catch up and enjoy the part.
