Braids

The streets of The Shire were long, dusty and winding in a way that would get any stranger lost. It was in fact so dusty, that if you had squinted, you would have seen minute particles of dust floating through beams of tree-filtered sunlight. The day was loud and bustling, as it was a Saturday- the day of the Hobbit market.

Bilbo, in a great hurry, had weaved through hordes of Proudfoots (feet?), Tooks and Brandybucks that had gathered in the town centre for the best deals on various sorts of spoons and was now firmly on his way home, Frodo at his side. The wind had picked up slightly. Bilbo’s hair was being brushed back by the breeze, lifted gently off of his neck

Frodo squinted up at his uncle. Revealed by the breeze was a braid, weaved intricately behind his ear and fastened with a delicately painted bead: some indistinguishable red blob on a blue sky.

“What’s that braid, Uncle?”

Bilbo startled.

Then slowly, he tucked the braid back behind his ear and turned to face him.

“It’s nothing, dear Frodo. Don’t worry yourself” He murmured, running a hand through the boy’s hair. Frodo took this as an answer, let the question sit in the back of his mind and continued to hop carefully over rocks on the dirt Shire path.

On the other side of Bilbo’s carefully cut curls was another braid. If Frodo were a dwarf (which he clearly was not), he would have recognised it as a braid of courtship, cut harshly, in a moment of wild grief, to chin length where it normally would have reached Bilbo’s shoulder.

And in Bilbo’s pocket there lay, beside a golden ring, a dark purple bead that would have ended this braid; holding the careful insignia of the line of Durin, and the outline of a wooden shield.

Bilbo walked home, Frodo at his side.
