No, Loki is not going to be asexual in the rewrite; he's going to be bisexual and aromantic. This makes him allosexual aromantic, or alloaro for short.

Asexual and aromantic are sometimes confused with each other, but while asexual means not experiencing sexual attraction, aromantic means not experiencing romantic attraction. They are not the same.

To answer your questions, here's a broad overview of several things:

Asexual people (as well as people of other sexualities, for that matter) can be sex-favorable (like sexual activities or the idea of it), sex-indifferent (don't have strong opinions on having sex or the idea thereof/are indifferent/don't care) or sex-repulsed (find taking part in sexual activities or even the idea of it undesirable/repulsive). Note here that this is an oversimplification of all three terms. Rewrite Loki is likely sex-favorable.

Being asexual is a sexual orientation and has nothing to do with one's views on the acceptability of the sexual activities of other people. For that, the terms are sex-positive or sex-negative, wherein (to oversimplify) sex-positivity is essentially the belief that all sexual activities between two or more fully-consenting adults are acceptable, whereas sex-negativity is the belief opposite to that. Sex negative people may believe that sex is only acceptable after marriage, between a man and a woman, be anti-sex work, and so on. Sex-favorability or sex-repulsion has nothing to do with sex-positivity or sex-negativity, and people who are sex-repulsed may be staunchly sex-positive. Rewrite Loki is obviously not sex-negative.

Action is not the same as attraction. Being asexual does not mean being a celibate. Asexual people don't experience attraction, but that doesn't mean they cannot have had several sexual partners for other reasons. Likewise, aromantic people can have had multiple romantic partners. Loki is not asexual in this rewrite, but even if he was, there's still nothing stopping him from having slept with a lot of people.

People don't necessarily have to be asexual to be aromantic or vice versa, although there's plenty of people who are both aromantic and asexual (referred to as aroace). Alloromantic asexual people (alloace for short) experience romantic attraction but not sexual attraction. Allosexual aromantic people (alloaro for short), on the other hand, experience sexual attraction but not romantic attraction.

However, both 'asexual' as well as the 'aromantic' are identities as well as spectrums (ace-spec and aro-spec respectively, collectively known as aspec, a term which is also shared by autistic-spectrum people) which not only include people that don't experience attraction at all but also those who experience limited attraction, i.e. demi and grey people (as well as several other microlabels). Both spectrums are incredibly diverse meaning there's a lot of ground to cover to be fully inclusive of everyone within it, but if you want to know more, the split attraction model is a good place to start.

Loki being bisexual is canon in the series, and him being either bi, pan, or some other label under the multisexual category is canon in most other interpretations of him including the mythology. The rewrite's Variant Loki will be bisexual in accordance with this, although this may or may not hold true for other variants of him. Meaning yes, Loki is sexually attracted to men, women and nonbinary people (but not romantically attracted to anyone).

While him being aromantic is a headcanon we're adding from our side with no particularly solid canon basis, it's something many of us latched on to when he admitted thinking (romantic) love isn't real in episode three of the canon show. And when the series decided to shove the amatonormative bs that was canon sylki down our throats the very next episode, we decided to go along with our aro Loki headcanon both out of pure spite as well as out of a desire to have more arospec content in a fandom that heavily lacks it, because while aro rep in media is scarce as it is, it is also immensely scarce in fandom spaces, and since several writers of the rewrite happen to be arospec, we wanted to fill that void.

The fact that the aro flag is green and black and the alloaro flag is green and gold really doesn't help.

Ace-friendly SH Fics: Masterlist

Alrighty folks so strap in, here is the first round of my ace-friendly Shadowhunters fic rec list! It’s so hard to have to navigate fics that should have a canon asexual character, always just vaguely expecting disappointment (cough Raphael). So. All of the fics on this list are ace-friendly in some way or another, whether it’s tagged/talked about or even intended by the author or not- they do NOT invalidate Raphael’s asexuality (using the definition of asexuality as not experiencing sexual attraction, irrespective of feelings toward sex. And while this list does have some aroace!Raphael, it is specifically for ace!Raphael)  This’ll cover everything from ace-friendly smut for my smut-inclined friends (meaning Raphael is not sex-repulsed in those, but still ace) to platonic/solo stuff for those of my friends who are less romance-inclined. I also threw in some headcannons of other SH characters. Let me know what you all think! (Things not under the “smut” category do not have any written descriptions of sex to the best of my memory and brief scan-throughs, but please let me know if there’s something in the general list that should be under smut). If you’re strongly sex-repulsed please use your usual discretion. (And everyone just please read the tags in general).   One final note: keep in mind that this is just a collection of fics that are supportive of asexuality. While these are fics I personally enjoyed/read often, this list is not an endorsement of all aspects of the content (ie. the way other identities are handled, etc.) This list is meant to account for different tastes, just with the bonus relief of knowing asexuality is there. (so I’mma be honest I was in a pretty sex-repulsed mood while doing this part so I didn’t fully reread it to be sure it’s safe but it’s literally written by a self-professed ace author and I did see reference to the aceness amidst the smut so I’m pretty sure we’re good)

What is Desired by DustinMcDreamy (I’m not going to include descriptions for smut because many of them are potentially triggering in nature for sex-repulsed friends, but this one is a dom/sub sort of thing, pretty hella kinky so buyers beware. It’s messy on the ace-front (the author started the series before Raphael came out, and had to add it retroactively) but there’s some good lines in there in particular for gray ace or demi folks who are experiencing lust for someone for the first/only time, etc.) chasing starlight by  mostlikelydefinentlymad There was no set destination, simply one agreed upon prerogative: drive. (So this isn’t technically smut insofar as there’s no actual explicit description of sex, it’s basically all blood drinking, but it’s a heavily implied metaphor and Raphael’s blood lust for Simon is very reminiscent of sexual attraction, so that part kind of doesn’t reflect how I feel as an ace person. BUT Raphael does not actually experience sexual attraction, the story is quite lovely, and the author is quite lovely as well, so I’d still recommend it)

His mother should have had a house full of girls. Instead she ended up with him and his brothers and a rag tag crew of every teenaged hooligan in a five mile radius running through her home. She was quick to grab an ear but quicker to give a hug, and Raphael put up with it as well as could be expected. She gave hugs to the neighborhood boys and kisses to her sons, and the only silver lining was that she didn’t wear lipstick. (honestly this is one of my favourite Raphael fics in general, and I believe the author only intended for him to be ace in this but I definitely interpret it as at least aro-spec as well if not just straight-up aroace)  When’s a monster not a monster? by scalira “He had never heard about something like this before. You either liked the opposite sex or you lived in sin as someone who liked the same sex. But he had never heard of people just not liking any sex.He decided to just let it rest for now, pushing the worry aside till he at least graduated highschool. But then there was a friend, and his name was David.” (*** Warning: there is a fairly sudden mention of oral sex near the beginning. And some descriptions of violence. There’s definitely implications of feelings- especially from Simon- but really I interpret it as being this chill, mostly platonic, nice little fic that makes me feel pretty good when I’m sick of all the heavy romance stuff) 18. It also does the ace=not wanting sex thing, but the author is ace-spec so it’s got some perspective for sure. And it’s written so beautifully and such a lovely concept. **Warning for ace-phobia and brief sexual harassment) (I cried the first time I read this) El Hijo De Santa Muerte by Gzmoii “He stepped aside, letting Guadalupe in. She walked in with a careful nod, looking around at Magnus’ loft. Magnus snapped his fingers behind his back, hiding the potions and other magical ingredients around the loft. Given that Guadalupe wasn’t a mundane, she wouldn’t be able to notice the subtle shift as everything around the room moved. Guadalupe’s head snapped toward him, “What was that?” She asked.” (So this actually DOES have ace!Raphael, but I’m putting it here because it also has aro!Guadalupe Santiago, which is hella rad) (22 ch and counting)

Sorry to be one of "those people" but what exactly is asexual and aromance (i probably wrote that wrong sorry) and basically everything going on with Jughead cause I watch the show but I had/have no idea about all this...

  Oh thats fine! its okay I had that problem too at first. but thanks for trying to learn these things! I’m not the best at explaining  but I’ll try to explain it.

Before i go further, I wan’t to note that i’m asexual and possibly demiromantic (only experiencing romantic attraction after i have a special bond with someone,) but even then I don’t know everything about the show or comics, and others are more dedicated to this topic than I am (I’m siding on making jughead aroace, but I haven’t done a lot of research,) so I’m only saying things from what I’ve seen and was taught.

Aromatic means you don’t experience romantic attraction. (i rememberd it by “A lack of romatic attraction”

Now, you can still expereince love like you would with your friends (also known as platonic love) and you can still love your family, but they don’t experience the “Special” love that people do with their romantic partner. Most of the time aromatic idivduals don’t want romantic relationships, but it varies for each individual.

Asexual means you don’t experience sexual attraction (very different from aromatic.)  (I remembered this word because i identify as it, but I also think of it as “A lack of sexual attraction”)

 Idk what sexual attraction is, but any sexual feelings you (or “not asexual” people) feel towards someone is something asexuals don’t or RARELY experience. Again it varies with different indivudials.

Some people are what’s known as Aroace (I think thats the right word), where your BOTH asexual and aromatic (they might also identify as Aspec-i think-, meaning they fall somewhere on the asexual or/and aromantic spectrum.) Aroace means they don’t experience romantic OR sexual attraction. However, you can still feel platonic (Friend) love or love your families. Some (NOT ALL) like to touch (like cuddle, or hold hands and possibly but unlikely have sex) but I think the majority don’t like to do any of these things, however, I’m not sure.

if you watch Riverdale, you probably know that is a TV show based on the Archie comics. In the comics Jughead didn’t date (or when he went on a date he didn’t know it was a date then told his date that then mentioned that he didn’t feel “that way” towards people.) He never (from what I’ve seen) had crushes either. He’s also romace and sex repulsed (meaning he had NO INTREST IN ROMANTIC OR SEXUAL acts -not sure how to word this, but he basically dosen’t like to be hugged or touched nor does he want a romantic relationship at all.)

I haven’t read all of the comics, but I’ve also never seen Jughead wanting sex/romantic relationships with anybody (except food most people would joke.) and I always related to him (even when I didn’t know what asexual was at the time.)

When Riverdale came out, we were told that Jughead could be asexual (which ignored his aromantic sexuality for one,) but then we found out he would not be asexual or aromatic, which made people who were aromatic or asexual (or both) very upset. (Some would argue he’s still asexual in the show, but he was a touch-repulse asexual in the comics-not liking hugs or kisses, which is why people are mad.) The only “representation” we’ve seen in the media were either faking it, or had a medical condition that prevented them from experiencing the attraction. Actually, now that I think about it, I don’t think there are any aromantic characters out there, which is even more upsetting for those who are aromantic and/or aroace.

A lot of people who are not aroace tell us that we should just shut up and accept it, but the thing is, they’re erasing his sexuality (and theres more than enough straight characters in the show so they can “sacrafice” jughead to be aro ace.) Even if he never outwardly said it in the comics (except for the recent ones) he always had “hinted” that he was aroace. (and chip zdarsky viewed him as asexual before he started to write the recent Archie comics.) 

So basically, the tv show/crew ignored his sexuality from the comics and made him straight in the show. We want him to not want to date or have sex in the show because that’s how he was in the comics a majority of the time; plus we want representation/someone to relate to in the show because we related to him in the comics. if they did make jughead aroace, this would spread awareness about aromantic/asexual identity and maybe help those who are wondering why they don’t feel sexual or romatic attraction (or at least help them feel less alone like jughead did in the comics for me when I was 10.)

I’m still clinging on to the hope that he just dosen’t know what his sexuality is yet, but I’m doubting that’s whats happening.
