I do not trust myself to have the lyrical ability to translate it well rhythmically, but I've been thinking that perhaps if I put out a gist of the meaning then perhaps someone more musically inclined can work off of that to turn it into something usable. At the very least, I hope it's helpful to give a bit more context. I'll include the original lyrics as well for those who want to compare side by side. For all of these (assuming I get to more) I'll be using the full song version lyrics from the vocal collection. Translation notes are in brackets. Sorry the spacing is weird because Tumblr's formatting is honestly kinda garbage and won't let me change much.

Note: The lyrics in this game are quite dense with nuances and references so if there's any I seem to have missed, please do let me know! Please consider these simply rough drafts to get the gist of the full lyrics as I just did this in one sitting. Overall thoughts: I’m sure people can draw their own interpretations from this but you can see it’s a song about dreams and the hard-fought battles in pursuing said dreams with lots of Quartz-related phrasing. Quite interesting as well how Kisa is sometimes mixed in with various LI characters and sometimes singing in contrast to them.

I would recommend for those who haven’t read it to also check out the first chapter of the moon novel (translation here) as it emphasizes Kisa grappling between her dreams and her reality. 

Also I would like to plug this cover version by Saki Hazuki singing this song with both male and female parts which feels very Jack Jeanne.

This really depends on your beliefs. Some believe pendulum move on its own, or that a certain spirit is moving it. Others on the other hand believe that it is our own intuition that moves it - so that we are moving it through subtle moves of the fingers. Depending on where your beliefs lie, you may choose to either hold the end of the string/chain in between your index finger and thumb with your elbow on a solid surface, or hang it on something to make sure you’re not the one moving it.

If you would like to rather hang it, there are sites that sell stands for it, or some people like to DIY a pendulum jar/bottle - for that you basically grab a transparent jar and glue the pendulum chain to the middle of the lid, so that when you close it, the pendulum hangs freely in the middle of it. This ensures that no wind will tamper with it.

Some tech witches would probably also use some sort of an app or a website which randomly decides what the pendulum answers. Once again, this depends entirely on your beliefs, whether you believe in the accuracy of divination tools in electronics. Unfortunately I haven’t found a good website or an app that would simulate it well, but perhaps you’ll have better luck!

Now, when you first get a pendulum, other than cleansing it, you can also “calibrate” it. Either you can decide on how it should show each answer, or you can ask it to show you each. You can also ask it basic questions that you know the answer to to find out their meanings (and many people do that even after “calibrating” to check if everything fits). There are 4 basic moves of a pendulum:

Yes - usually either from front to back (like nodding your head), or side to side. As I mentioned before, you can also ask it to show you (“show me a yes”) and remember it or write it down somewhere.

No - once again, usually side to side (like shaking your head) or front to back.

Maybe - usually either clockwise or counter-clockwise. This often means that the answer to your question depends on different factors. Kind of like saying “yes if X, no if Y”. Sometimes certain spirits also like to say “maybe” a lot, in my experience it is a common thing amongst tricksters.

Don’t know / Can’t answer / Rephrase - once again, usually clockwise or counter-clockwise. Some pendulums actually merge “maybe” and “don’t know”. This means that either they do not want to tell you, or you asked a non-yes/no-question.

Another thing are charts - you can use a pendulum chart or board for questions that don’t have yes/no answers. And many also use a pendulum board that has the basic 4 motions on it as well! Super useful for forgetful people. There are many you can choose from, and you can also make your own. There are ones with a full on alphabet, so that it can give you custom answers. You can find many for example on Pinterest. It’s better to print them out, but there were many times I’ve simply opened one on my phone and held my pendulum over the screen.

Pendulum’s are also often used in energy works as a way to find some blockages, which areas need the most attention, etc. Basically in these things one person lies down flat on the stomach or back, and the other person holds the pendulum over their body, asking to point towards the areas. I believe that it is quite a common practice when you go to some reiki therapy.

There are also other ways of using your pendulum. It can be used to find a location that meets your specifications / where the object you’re looking for is located. That could be for example when you’ve lost something in your house, or when you want to look for an ingredient.

For finding something local, you usually ask yes/no questions for each of the rooms (if it’s inside a house, this step would be skipped if you already know the room or if you’re in a larger area). Alternatively, you could hold your pendulum over a sketch of the layout of the building to figure out the room. Then, you would ask for the direction and the pendulum will point towards the object. Make sure you’re standing in the doorway, because otherwise you might be going forwards when the pendulum was actually pointing behind you. You do this multiple times, also throwing in some questions like “am I near the object”, etc.

For finding something in a large area (like entire neighbourhood, or tips for trips to other states, finding ingredients, etc.) you can use your pendulum with a map. Then you ask it to point to the area where you will find it / that’s good for your vacation. You can once again do it multiple times, and if you’re going to search for something specific, you can then use the local way of finding things.

One more thing I’d like to talk about before moving on to taking care of a pendulum, is divination itself. When talking about divination, most people probably imagine fortune telling. Now I’m not saying that’s impossible, but the fact is, future is everchanging. The slightest of things can change it - that is why the further we’re reading, the more inaccurate it gets. When you do a reading (and I mean anything, be it pendulum or tarot) for today, it will be likely quite accurate, but the further away you do, it gets less and less accurate. And on top of that, we can often misinterpret things. So just keep this in mind when using your divination tools. I personally rather do readings for advice rather than fortune-telling.

  Pendulum care

When we talk about pendulum care, it’s mostly about cleansing. Why do we cleanse? Because most things collect some amount of negative energy through time. This is especially true for spiritual tools, including divination tools, because by doing spiritual things, we open the area (and ourselves) to the energies of the universe - which includes negative ones. Other than that we also always cleanse tools when we first obtain them, to rid them of any energy they were subjected to up till they got into our hands. This ensures they keep giving accurate answers and we don’t bring even more negative energy into our lives.

Another thing is bonding with your pendulum. Using it by itself of course also is a way of bonding, but there are other ways too. Bonding helps you be more in tune with its energy, makes your readings more accurate. And if you (like some other people) believe that each divination tool has its kind of spirit (I feel like this is really common among card readers, because those cards be acting sassy), you might want to bond for the sake of bonding. Now this is done through for example carrying it around with you and meditating with it. When you first get it, asking test questions (ones you already know the answer to) can be a good way to feel its energy as well. Just make sure it’s alright with test questions, some divination tools really don’t like those in my experience, at least when you’re acting distrustful.

Cleansing your pendulum can be done in multiple ways. If you’d like to use physical cleaning (with water) while focusing on cleansing it spiritually too, please make sure that whatever the material is can be washed. There are many crystals that react with water, and in some cases it can be harmful not only to the crystal, but also to you.

Another way you can cleanse is by sunlight or moonlight. I’ve seen multiple opinions on these - some say that some crystals would be better with sunlight while others with moonlight and that full moon is the best, because the moonlight is strongest. However I have found it more common for new moon to be a cleansing period. The energies of new moon leave behind what should be gotten rid of and starts with a clean slate. Charging crystals would be probably better in full moon though, yes. But crystals currently aren’t our topic. You also need to make sure how certain crystals react with sunlight - because some fade if left too long in it. It doesn’t damage them, but you might be disappointed if your beautiful amethyst pendulum suddenly starts losing its purple colour. 

There is also something called soundcleansing. Usually it’s done with tuning fork or a singing bowl, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. I often combine this with visualisation and clap my hands, hum, things like that. It is mostly believed that the vibrations are what cleanse. So you can also pull up youtube video with some sounds and it should work just fine.

And then there is visualisation and meditation.This one is even more flexible than the other methods. You sit down with your pendulum and meditate, then imagine perhaps the energies exchanging, getting rid of any dark spots (negative energy) and bringing in some positive energy (often either white or yellow). I often combine this with some movement like slamming one hand lightly against the other, like shaking the negative energy out, like a powder.

  Materials

And I’d also like to mention that it is good to put up some protections around the place you wanna keep it in (you can also make a protection for the sachet you keep it in. This keeps it from building up too much negative energy. Many people believe that if a crystal builds up way too much negative energy, they can break. As in, part of them can fully chip off. This is actually what happened to my pendulum unfortunately, as I did not keep it in a protected place. You can continue using it even after that, I still do, but it’s never a good thing nor a good feeling to have that happen.

Other than protecting your pendulum, don’t forget to protect yourself too! Since you’re opening yourself to the universe, it is important to protect yourself from anything harmful that could enter your place through it.

Pendulums can be made from all kinds of things. If you don’t have the budget to get one, you may even use a necklace, or literally any weight hung on a string. But of course, crystals are the most common for pendulums. 

Rose quartz - Other than being the love crystal as everyone knows it, rose quartz is pretty good for getting rid of negative energies. So might be doing exceptionally well in love readings, but is mostly used for it’s protective energy.

Black obsidian - another crystal known mainly for its protective and cleansing energies, maybe more than rose quartz, which is usually focused more on love, self-love. 

Lapis lazuli - its properties have wisdom and truth. It’s not surprising that it is used for pendulums a lot. We do after all ask it for answers.

Aquamarine - quite an interesting stone. The connection with water means it has some cleansing properties. Spiritually however it is also connected with trust and communication. Once again, not surprising why one would want it for a pendulum.

Amethyst - Ah yes, amethyst. It has been considered one of the main spiritual crystals. Not too surprising, it is connected to the third eye energy center. It has the properties of wisdom, intuition and fighting anxiety and depression. In my opinion it is likely one of the most common materials used for pendulums and other spiritual tools.

Of course, crystals aren’t the only material used for pendulums. Another common one is metal. Copper for example is a great energy conductor and is quite widely used. Brass and Bronzestem from copper and therefore have very similar properties and are quite sturdy.

Sometimes also wood is used, as it is more grounding and stable, unaffected by the surrounding energies, only by yours as you hold it.

Some pendulums have beads / small crystals on the string. It can be used to customize the look, but also to add some meanings if you’d like. Quite common are also energy center beads (sold under “chakra” term, as chakras have been greatly appropriated from Hinduism and Buddhism).

  Making a Pendulum

There are multiple ways you can make your own pendulum if you don’t have the funds or don’t find it worth investing money into. You can always grab a necklace that you perhaps own. While most rather own pointy pendulums, they don’t have to have that shape. It is always good for it to be balanced though.

And if you’re into some woodwork, you can also carve out a wooden pendulum, hang it on a string and there you go! It shouldn’t be too heavy though, otherwise it will have a hard time swinging. And being too light might lead to it being swayed by the faintest of breezes.

we were in the kitchen and the medium was explaining about the satanic panic that happened for a while witch I found absolutely fascinating.

“ she just observeing by us” the black pendulum said waving the equipment over the closet “and tall”

“she’s like, ‘whatcha guys looking at?’” We all chuckled at sams joke

While the others set up and checked the equipment seth pulled you out into the hallway for a conversation

“so uh..you have fun last night?” He asked jokeinly

“Uhh what” I say

“your hickeys” he said pointing at you neck

“oh OH OH. Seth I’m so sorry I didn’t even realize” I replied turning bright red with blush

“Lemme guess it was Colby?” He laughed

“how did you know?” I smiled

“y/n” he looked at me sarcastically “ I’m not blind it’s obvious to literally everyone”

I go over to get y/n and Seth for the investigation and see them laughing together

was Seth flirting with her! That was the first thought that crossed My mind mind. but I needed to calm myself I was jumping to conclusions.

“Time for the investigation” I said a little firm

“okay” y/n said cheerily as she walked into the investigation room but Seth stayed back and whispered in my ear

“ next time you two have ‘fun’ don’t leave such obvious marks on her”

I blushed heavily as we all went back into the investigation room. It’s funny how both Sam and Seth told me to try and keep my hands off y/n. Sam said that I should at least wait till we get back to the hotel before making out together in a haunted house. But it sure was hard she is so beautiful.

When we all got back into the room i see Sam standing over a rem pod with sallie toys all around it almost immediately the rem pod started going off in a very strange and specific pattern. It looked like the ghost was walking around the pod in circles. Obviously everyone freaked out a little bit because the rem pod had never gone off this way before.

“ wait what was that?” Sam said in a whisper we all quickly went over to see it and set up the music box. At first the music box was calibrating but then it started to go off. “Woahh” everyone reacted. For some reason I got bad chills and I was the only person who got this.

Ghosts had always been targeting me in particular more than anyone else. They would seek me out and touch me. They would say my name in the Estes method and would prefer to speak with me more than anyone else. I suppose this is because of my gifts and my connection with the afterlife. From now on I decided that I would try and honor my grandma’s legacy and tap into my abilities.

for majority the investigation went on well but I got this weird feeling as we went on. Like someone or more likely SOMETHING was trying to take hold of me. before we were about to do the Estes method I got this horrible feeling. Like my back was suddenly hot. Really hot. It felt like a burning pain

“ahh” I cried out as I fumbled from the pain

“What’s wrong?” Colby asked catching me

“y/n are you okay” sam said concerned

“ it’s - burning like — hurts so ba- cut” I stutter crying a bit into Colby’s arms.

he looked down “ oh my god” he exclaimed as he took the camera to show a long bleeding scratch all the way down my back. At this point I was crying because of the pain.

Sam and Seth went out to have a discussion about weather they should end the investigation here. They decided to leave me and Colby alone together.

And I collapsed into Colby’s arms as he comforted me “shh it’s okay baby” I cried even harder I felt weak for crying but I was so scared “I love you” I managed out in a shakeup voice he pulled me even closer. The blood had soaked through my white shirt at this point. “I love you too” he said trying to be strong for me but seeing her cry really broke his heart

I've been rediscovering BL and yaoi recently as someone who is 35 and who read their first yaoi (Gravitation) in high school almost 20 yrs ago. And I really appreciate your knowledge, research, and analysis of the genre and Fandom. I feel some times the younger fans have a hard time letting themselves enjoy the inate fantasy of it vs. Having to flagellate themselves and others for it existing. It reminds me of an article (which I need to find) about how under capitalism in the west, we only feel empowered to control what we consume, so we assign some moral value to what media we consume or not consume. It's sad because some folks are ok with NSFW bans that will target queer folks and sex workers. They are okay with bans if it means that the things they consider indecent or problematic are gone but conservative and right wing parties think the existence of queer is indecent. I fear they'd ban themselves in the public sphere because of this mindset.

Ha! Gravitation was also the first BL anime I watched and read!

And yes to the younger fans but I think there are many, many things that fall into each other to create the current fandom climate in addition to what you said about capitalism and assigning moral values to your consumption.

Things aren't as separate as they used to be, now everything falls into a big fandom hub and fans of different things with different boundaries and preferences have to see each other constantly. 15+ years ago everything was more sequestered and you had the easy option of noping out of places without having the feeling of falling out of fandom. Not to forget that having different accounts was also more widespread, sth that people forgot for a while and tried to put everything under their one and sometimes real name account.

The US, the main driver of anglosphere fandom spaces and unfortunately main influencer of other language spaces, straight up without a doubt had a huge right-wing shift in many, many aspects of its society including their culture. Some time ago you could be reasonably sure that an online queer person would be pretty leftist in many things they said and did. Now you have gays, lesbians, bisexuals and more just parroting Christian conservatism with their entire chest and that's reflected in fandom as well.

Again the US but this time their failing school system also in the last 20 years. You have one, one and a half generations of American children, teenagers and young adults who have trouble reading and understanding a text. And as sad and devastating that is for them they make it everyone else's problem and that constantly.

There is so much that goes on here and I as a non-American, non-Christian fan feel like the American cultural Christians and their teenagers are suffocating queer fandom even if they're queer themselves but it's not like we're forced to engage with them when we don't want to (most of the time)

But in my personal experience that fandom climate is on the down actually, like a pendulum that swings back and forth after reaching its high point. Unfortunately, American society itself, with its crumbling status as an Empire, is not doing well or in the path of recovery.

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED YUGIOH ARC-V

So yesterday I decided to start rewatching ARC-V (for the second time, at the behest of a friend who just got into the show), and, well... shit.

There is a hint of foreshadowing I missed, and it's in Episode fucking One to boot.

Unfortunately, this hint is entirely lost in the English dub (edit: I stand corrected, it's still there, just not as explicitly obvious), and I can't seem to find any source for the Japanese dialogue of the episode (not that it'd help much, in the end; I can't read Japanese for shit and am mostly going off the romanization of structures I only barely understand). But why is this relevant here, you ask?

Well, allow me to explain.

There are several ways of referring to oneself (or one's possessions) in Japanese. You're probably already familiar with first person pronouns 私 (Watashi), 僕 (Boku), and 俺 (Ore), all of which mean "I" in English, and each of which is used by different sorts of people in different sorts of situations.

In the context of ARC-V, Yuuya normally uses Ore when referring to himself, and Ore no for possessions. But being the expert performer he is, he puts on a faux-formal persona for Entertainment Duels, so in addition to giving extra flair to...literally everything he says, he switches to the more polite Watashi and Watashi no for a more, ah, charming impression.

(In comparison, Yuzu already uses Watashi, as it is also the most common pronoun for girls. Gongenzaka defaults to the "manly" Ore, and Sora uses the softer male pronoun Boku and its derivative).

Now the kicker here is that, from the moment Yuuya acquires Pendulum until the end of his Duel with Ishijima, he uses none of the aforementioned pronoun sets. Instead, he switches to the first person pronoun 我 (Ware) and possessive pronoun 我が (Waga), which are now considered a stiff, archaic, and outdated way to refer to oneself, mainly used in fiction by characters with a strong sense of dramatic flair.

But Pink, isn't that basically Yuuya getting really into the entertainer persona?

... well yes, but actually no. I would have written this off as another flashy quirk of his, had it not occured to me that:

1) This is not a one-off occasion, and it only repeats in specific situations. I mean, we don't see this particular pronoun switch making another appearance until the tail end of Episode 39... when Yuuya goes into the Awakened state for the "first" time.

He doesn't talk much when he's like that (which, yeah, fair enough; I can't focus on talking and doing full combo at the same time either), but you may notice that his Pendulum summoning chant changes from "Appear now, my monsters!" (Arawareyo, ore no monsuta-tachi!) to "Come out, my monster servants!" (Ideyo, waga shimobe no monsuta-tachi yo!)

And guess what? The same happens in Episode 1, when he does the very first Pendulum summon.

2) The personal pronoun Ware is not only used by melodramatic characters, but also by those that view themselves as distant from, and/or superior to everyone else. Ancient spirits, magical entities, you get what I mean here...

And it sounds kinda familiar, doesn't it?

An egotistic crackhead with a strong superiority complex, who still strives for drama and entertainment despite his twisted ways. You know him. I know him. Everyone knows him.

He's been trying to hijack Christmas for six years now, after all.

...God fucking dammit.

Yes, Zarc is the only character with enough theatre kid energy to use Ware as his default personal pronoun. And yes, Yuuya copies that aspect every time magical Pendulum fuckery is involved... which, admittedly, would not register as foreshadowing until you have context for what it's supposed to be foreshadowing in the first place.

.. And it still flew over my head entirely in the first rewatch. So much for a resident theorist, lmao.

Seriously though, I think this is pretty brilliant. Sure, it's a niche linguistic detail that requires prior knowledge of the ending to understand, but it hints towards a great mystery behind the origins of Pendulum summoning, which is very damn cool, if I do say so myself.

It's worth mentioning that I also watched Episode 2, which doubles down with the more obvious, but no less neat hint of placing Yuuya on the "antagonist" side of the Duel screen against Yuzu in their exhibition match thingy.

See, this is why I love ARC-V so much. One of the greatest joys of watching this show is finding all the hidden puzzle pieces and going "Oh, so THAT'S what they meant when they did this!", and it never fails to amaze me every time.

The entire time I've been distracted between writing these, crows have been yelling at me about it. Which. Is how Apollo communicates with me when I'm not actively talking to him through readings LMFAO.

Disclaimer that I didn't know of Fit before QSMP (I've only been in mcyt for 4 years monkaS) so these are gonna be largely pulled out of my ass and a lil repetitive.

These two both have experiences in anarchy and war, they've definitely brushed shoulders a couple times bc of it

They admired each other's work ofc. Phil is a macro scale kinda guy, total annihilation and victory that makes a statement. Fit's more of a micro scale kinda guy, zeroing in on one person or group individually and making their lives hell until the end in the name of surviving a little longer

On that note, I think we all sleep a little bit on the fact that Fit is Also a survivalist like Phil, just in a very different set of high stakes conditions. These two are equally skilled in it and equally sharp strategists

On that note, anyone who knew them from the past would fear the idea of them coming together to create a plan of any kind, especially of the anarchist-fueled variety. If the Federation has done their research right, they should know full well how terrifying this duo could be in an effort to dismantle their authority

Btw by brushing shoulders I don't just mean brief passings by, I mean they've like. Camped out for a night together, temporarily truced for the sake of safety in numbers, etc. More than a few conversations have been had even if the time they've spent together totals to less than a week.

However, even when they weren't actively paired together, they'd still occasionally trade or gift each other surplus resources. It was a genuine kind act, even if it simultaneously served as a reason for each of them to not come after the other. I scratch your back, you scratch mine.

Like why do you think Fit was one of the first threats on Phil's mind in Purgatory. He Knew(tm). And he knew Fit has an affinity for picking off the weak first, like a lion after a herd of antelope. To him, Purgatory was the awakening of a monster who'd been dormant for a long time.

See, present day they're QPR as fuck, they'd never do this now without 10x the pressure Purgatory put on them, but back in the day they took close notes on each other's strengths and weaknesses. Just In Case, yknow? They could very much kill each other. Back in the day they would've if it came to it, no matter how good an ally they were.

Something about how these two used to be so cold and hard to the world. Be it to self-preserve or some other reason. Something about how now they've both softened and warmed after becoming parents. They never could've imagined the other would "weaken" like this, especially back then.

A lot of this boils down to mutual respect, common interests, and secret admiration tbh. And what's more homoerotic than that?

They're both crisis preppers. Not doomsday type shit, just. Being ready for shit to hit the fan. They both come from places where life is significantly more dangerous than it is in other realms.

The crazy thing is though? Despite the above, they can't imagine being from each other's realms. Phil would LOATHE 2B2T and Fit would hate the absoluteness of Hardcore. Isolation is absolute, death is absolute. There's no wiggle room or margin for error.

With how adaptive the two of them are due to their origins, they could probably acclimate to any conditions. They'd complain about having to, especially if it was inconvenient, but they could. They used to swap tips & tricks with each other on how to improve their adaptability too.

Fit would've 100% been down to join Phil on Doomsday in DSMP. He was thoroughly impressed when Phil told him the story.

So, as requested, I did a reading on this topic. I also asked @shamrock313 to ask her Oracle, and @theloverscardtarot asked her Oracle and her Pendulum. Let’s get into it!

🎴 With my cards, I got Eight of Cups: “abandonment, walking away, letting go, searching for truth, leaving behind; leaving unhappy relationship, abandonment issues”. The difficult choice of leaving something behind in pursuit of something greater. The Eight of Cups is the card of walking away from something. This is a relationship that probably doesn’t satisfy any of them. And there’s also the need to experience a higher purpose in life - which, I assume, comes from Bill, since we saw in my last reading that he seeks a deeper connection. There’s also a feeling of exhaustion, and the realization that nothing is coming out of this relationship. “Can you imagine spending the rest of your life with this person? “You know, you don’t make this any easier.” Will scolded through the bars.

“In what way?” Hannibal asked, looking up from the pan where Councilman Sheldon Isley’s heart sizzled in Will’s mind.

Will’s look was as flat as his mood and he ignored the slight smirk pulling at the corner of his lover’s mouth. “You wanted to play this game, wanted to put me in here. I can’t exactly pretend I don’t know who you are, what you are.” Will paused and took a breath, exasperated but also starting to get a little hard. They had been playing this game for a while and it was forever escalating. Now he was in Chilton’s care only able to see his lover infrequently and fantasise that they were back together in Hannibal’s home. “I have to play along with Jack too, but I also don’t want you to go to prison, and some days those two things come into conflict.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Hannibal offered, with no apparent sympathy as he turned the slices of heart over in the pan.

Will huffed a sigh and then resorted to what he knew would get under Hannibal’s skin. “I warned Jack that you’d be hosting a dinner party the next time the Ripper kills. And here we are.” He could almost smell the scent of the meat cooking.

“Here we are, indeed,” Hannibal drawled darkly, before looking back up at Will. “Sheldon’s heart will make a perfect dinner tonight.”

“Yes, but the rest of poor Mr Isley is in the fridge awaiting a dinner party,” Will accused, accurately he knew. He knew Hannibal better than anyone ever had or likely ever would. They knew each other intimately.

“You need to be more careful. At the moment I’m doing a very good job of convincing everyone that my accusations about you are wholly unfounded. We discussed this Hannibal, I was meant to throw them off the scent, give a way for you to clear your name. But then you do shit like this,” he gestured between the stove top and the fridge. “I can’t suddenly say I don’t think it’s you, but if you’re not careful, people will start to believe me.”

“Hmm,” Hannibal hummed his agreement but there was no remorse there. A slight tone of amusement if anything. “Tell me, Will, what is it you are seeing right now.”

For a moment the pendulum swung and the scene before him shifted from Hannibal in his kitchen to Hannibal outside the barred cage Will had been placed in for Hannibal’s visit. Just as quickly he was back in Hannibal’s kitchen.

Chaote Tips #3

Get creative with your spell work and look towards the items you have laying around the house for inspiration. I once did a very successful working for luck by writing a letter of intent and mailing it to myself, the idea being it would activate when I opened it. Chaos magick has a strong emphasis on a DIY approach, and you can turn common household items into workings with just a little imagination. A few weeks ago I used an old pill bottle as the container for a spell jar.

On the other hand, don’t be so quick to dismiss traditional methods either as they can be just as powerful.

At the end of the day, what makes a spell powerful is how much you vibe and connect with it. If you hate the process, well you’re probably not going to see the success.

Develop you own correspondences. It’s useful to have tables and charts with the traditional values of herbs, crystals, colors, or whatever, and that can serve as an excellent starting point. However, those associations were once assigned to that specific item by another practitioner who was also just going off their intuition. These associations have power because we give it to them through belief. In the end, your personal beliefs are going to be the most powerful for you since they’re the ones you vibe with on the deepest level.

Become proficient in a divination practice, any at all, doesn’t matter. This is like one of the biggest tips I’ve got because learning how to divine answers and receive insights on all manner of circumstances is majorly beneficial. Plus, I always recommend doing a reading before you do any spell work, to get an idea if you actually should or not, as well as after to get an idea on how well it went. I prefer tarot personally, along with other cartomancy methods like oracle cards, because they’re so rich with information you can gain so much detail. The pendulum is okay, I guess, but unless you have a pendulum board with the alphabet and other things like that, you’re restricted to yes/no questions, which is severely limiting. Runes are better, but they’re difficult to learn and there’s a lot of UPG being passed off as tradition within the practice. Geomancy is something I just gave a shot, and it’s a lot of fun, and it’s very insightful. Play around with a bunch of different types and see which one you vibe with the most.

Our Responsibility in Spirit Work

Deciding to walk with and work with spirits is a responsibility to yourself, and to the spirits who decide to step forward. You are welcoming a teacher, mentor, friend, and a deeply intimate relationship into your life. You are willingly asking for someone to come into your life with the goal of aiding and helping you on your path. 

Your responsibility is to interact with them, to learn self-mastery in order to effectively communicate with them. This is a reciprocal relationship. The spirit chooses you as much as you decide to work with them. There’s a level of commitment there that must be honored, which is something that not a lot of newer people realize when they begin their spirit work journeys. 

When you reach out to find a guide or companion, you are also reaching into the whole realm of spirits and all forms that they may take: the good, the bad, and the ugly. This becomes a life-long journey, sure you can close yourself off and give it all up, but you have already invested in this. You’ve invested time, money, and research into this world. 

If you open yourself up to spirits, you should also be able to open your mind to the vast amount of different ideas and approaches that are out there. This path is not for anyone that is unwilling to challenge themselves and is comfortable with staying within their own bubble. A lot of times if a spirit that you work with does not challenge you and does not help you to grow or carry out tasks, chances are they are a projection of your own mind. It happens. It’s not a failure on your part to work with a servitor you had accidentally created. They also have their own place in the craft. If you do decide to begin working with spirits, discernment, and a good banishing ritual will be your best friends. 

Before you begin this journey take time to really think it through. Think about the time and energy that needs to be put into this practice, from spending time with your spirit allies to learning how to engage with your psychic and astral senses in order to really communicate with them. Think about how much time you can dedicate to each spirit and really pay attention to how much time you actually commit to them. Over time it gets easier but there will always be some amount of bumps in the road such as life getting in the way or hitting a fallow period. In these instances, communication is key. It’s important to reach out and let them know what is going on and renegotiate any contracts that you have currently going. Will they accept a different offering? Will they accept delayed offerings? 

While yes, they understand and can ease up on the contracts sometimes, feeding is still an important part of the symbiotic relationship of the witch and their familiar. It’s an integral part of the contract and must be honored. This is why it’s so important to make sure that you don’t overextend yourself when reaching out and establishing these connections. We all deal with physical illnesses, our mental health might take a hit. But our spirits must still be honored and they can often be instrumental in helping us to understand what exactly we need to do in order to bounce back. 

Make sure to really take time when “interviewing” your familiar. Set out your expectations and clear goals. Really try to get to know them. Ask them questions about themselves. Ask what they expect from you. Utilize divination methods to help facilitate communication. Tarot or Oracle cards can be helpful to get to know them and can give them a mode of communication that can be really clear. You can also get a better read on them and their energy. For figuring out what offerings they like, pendulums can be instrumental in being able to help figure out exactly what the spirit wants in terms of offerings through the use of yes/no questions. You can also ask the spirit for specific signs of what they want.

It’s all about being able to communicate with them and making the terms and conditions as clear as possible. This is easier if you have a more developed clairaudience or clairsentience, but anyone- with a little work and effort- is able to communicate with spirits. If you find something isn’t working, bring it up to them. Everything is negotiable. Start with the standard offerings and sacrifices that can be applied to most, if not every spirit. This includes water, cakes, coins, oils, incense, and sometimes even a little bit of blood. I know that’s a scary sentiment, but traditionally witches would offer their blood to spirits. It’s seen throughout the witch trials. These are seen as safe bet offerings. The spirits you contact will probably have more specific things they like. For example, if you’re working with a human spirit, they may have had vices in their life such as smoking or drinking so for them, a pack of their favorite cigarettes or drink of choice would make an excellent offering.

When I was first exploring Spirit Work, I messed up. I was young and naive as to how everything worked and had a fantastical approach that just wasn’t accurate. I neglected my end of the contract with the spirit I was working with and for a while, my life fell apart. I was constantly broke and the situation that I had tasked my familiar with fell through. It was completely my fault. I had missed specified offerings and the Spirit I was working with took offense. We hadn’t really formed a relationship at the time and there was no communication that I was in a depressive episode without the energy to make the offerings. It seemed like a monumental task at the time and I didn’t push myself to make the offering anyway. No one wants to pay the tax man but we all have to. I tried to avoid it and it blew up in my face. I fumbled that relationship for a while. There’s no shame in hiding it. I know a lot of posts make it seem that everything is okay all the time, that just isn’t the reality. Life gets gritty and we all make occasional mistakes on our Paths.

However, I was able to understand that the spirit wasn’t happy. I didn’t make my offerings, and they were doing the work for me without payment. Understandably, they were unhappy. And they found a way to take their payment. Finally, I was able to muster up enough energy and willpower to conjure them and explain what exactly happened and make appeasement offerings. We opened a dialogue and were able to communicate what exactly happened. They became more of a mentor from there on for me in the ways of navigating working with spirits. They kind of took pity on me for not really knowing what I was doing and jumping into the deep end of things. Someone else I know went through something similar, the situation didn’t really work out like that. They ended up having to cut ties with that spirit and banish them. There was a lot of work that had to be done to put their life back into order. They had to essentially build their practice from the ground up again and relearn everything.

There’s a lot to consider before throwing yourself into spirit work and you should take all the time that you need to figure it all out before beginning this journey. And while you’re figuring this out, research as much as you can. Look through accounts of traditional witches and even modern practitioners. Ask questions to witches who are willing to teach. Really understand what it means to open your home to familiars and spirits. Learn ways to defend yourself and your space if need be. 

While yes, you can communicate with them to let them know what is going on, it shouldn’t become commonplace in your practice. You can’t be late on your credit card payments every month and expect nothing to happen. It’s the same with spirit work. This makes it sound transactional, and that’s because it is. Traditionally speaking, familiars are our assistants and mentors in the craft. We learn from them and ask them to perform tasks for us. In return, they expect payment. As you develop your relationship with your familiar and other spirits, the nature of the relationship will naturally change. It will still be transactional, but it will also come with more leeway when there are disruptions to your life.

Opening yourself up to the Spirit World, and welcoming them into your home comes with a lot of responsibilities. Going into this type of work understanding the nuances of what it means to have and work with a familiar can ease some of the fumbling that can happen in the beginning. It means you are better prepared to navigate a relationship with Spirits. It means a more successful journey with Them.

Just some personal thoughts under the cut…

I was feeling a bit weird about veering slightly into torture porn with my recent writing, and then I reflected on why I’m so invested in putting my favorite character through hell when he does not at all deserve it. I think it’s a way to cope with helplessness. I don’t talk a lot about my feelings about the current genocide and the crushing feeling of not doing enough as one small person in the world—at least, I don’t talk about it here (I am more vocal and active outside of my presence on tumblr/online world), but there’s just so much shit right now that feels like a losing battle, and it’s easy to get sucked into numb apathy when everything you do seems to do nothing.

Of course, this is such a privileged place to be because my home is safe and I have my health and the freedom to go where I want and say the things I want, and I try to leverage that privilege where I can but it’s not enough and it’ll never be enough, and I feel guilty that I don’t do more. Teaching is wonderful and great, but I’m underpaid and overworked, and so much of my life is devoted to making sure kids not only learn to read but to think critically and care about other people even when we are all numbing ourselves to pain and the suffering of others because our brains are so limited in what we can absorb when there are so many terrible things that are happening in the world.

March is also the time of year where I start having suicide ideation. Something about winter lingering in the upper plains with that sort of suffocating grayness gets to me, especially this year following a practically snowless winter. This is also when most of the traumatic things that have shaped my life have happened, and even when I’m not actively thinking about those things, I can still feel them. (Don’t worry, I’m in therapy and I have a very good support system and my mental health is now very well-managed.)

That part of the fic where it says “Suffering was life but life was not only suffering, and once there had been joy and delight between the gasps of sorrow and hurt” is just me talking through my own feelings. Maybe I am sinking into the misery of this fic with a bit of zest, but it’s been really cathartic to make a character realize he wants to live in spite of the horrible things that have happened to him.

The first part of the second chapter was weirdly one of the most important things I’ve written for myself in a long time. Sirius realizes that yes, maybe he does want to live for Harry, but he wants to live for himself too, and even when you’ve been beaten and broken, it doesn’t mean that life can’t go one or that it isn’t worth trying. And you don’t really know if it’ll get worse when you come out of the thing you thought was the worst thing that could happen, but there is so much else that can and will happen too. Life swings like a pendulum, and it has to come back the other way because everything ends at some point even if it doesn’t end the way you wanted or hoped.

Anyway, this has been a very strange spring break, and I can’t believe I’m thinking this deeply about Sirius Black getting tortured and why it matters to me. So I guess, enjoy the whump/torture fic written by a formerly suicidal author if that helps you. Enjoy without guilt because exploring human suffering and cruelty and recovery through the safety of fiction is okay and probably good. Fiction isn’t real, but human emotion and our need for catharsis IS real.

And don’t worry because nobody dies in my fic. And yes, he will be rescued in the end.
