I'm not sure if its possible to get something like pigs blood from a butcher in the US, but i feel like someone like Esme would prefer that over hunting animals.

And maybe Carlisle and Rosalie would work on a blood alternative, kind of like TruBlood, for vampires.

What are your thoughts on that?

My understanding is that it's tricky in the US to find it, but with the Cullens' money they could probably pay off some local butchers to save blood for them. Just imagining Esme being like "oh I make authentic black pudding and sell it online!" as an explanation and they make like a fake online store front for it and then people start trying to actually order it and she's like, oh crap I guess I have to make some now? Like when you read stories about restaurants that were really fronts for mob activity but someone wanders in and the mobsters have to get their mom to cook some pasta for the oblivious customers.

But, really, if SM were more interested in 'vampire slice of life' stuff AND if she had more room in her story for the secondary characters to have desires and motivations outsides of either facilitating or resenting the main romance, of course Carlisle would have been trying to make a blood substitute, and of course Rosalie and Edward, with their various STEM degrees, would be helping him. And OF COURSE they would have researched the myths surrounding vampires having children long before Bella got pregnant. It's absolutely impossible for me to suspend my disbelief to accept that the Cullens and especially Carlisle were just like 'wow we literally never thought or wondered about this until just now' when Bella gets pregnant. Esme and Rosalie LONG for children! SURELY they've researched this before!?!? I could accept that they researched it but found no concrete evidence and thought it was just a myth made up by the Volturi or whatever but just the 'literally no idea . . . even though apparently there are books in our library about it, and our groundskeepers on Isle Esme know about it, and there are websites online about it' does not make sense to me unless the Cullens have just literally been standing around like unplayed Sims waiting for Edward and Bella to need them for something.

I also think the Cullens probably should have been working on some kind of sparkle-suppressing vampire make-up. I've seen people asking why they don't just use make-up to hide the sparkle or look older, but since their skin is so different from human skin, normal make-up probably wouldn't work that well. But again, you've got Alice the fashion maven and bunch of other vampires with backgrounds in biology and they can't put their heads together and come up with some kind of vampire-friendly, sparkle-proof foundation?

Again, I get it: at the end of the day Twilight is a romance, and romances generally and understandably have a narrow focus on the central relationship. But romances don't usually have so MANY side characters, either. Realistically, I would expect the Cullens, with their various medical and scientific studies, abundant free time (no sleep!) and unlimited wealth, would have already solved a lot of living-as-a-vampire problems by the time Bella showed up.

Assuming they can be solved, of course. Maybe vampire venom on the skin really just makes any make-up lasting for more than a half hour impossible. Maybe a blood substitute just doesn't work because there's some magical 'blood is the life' thing going on here. Maybe pig's blood is just too impractical to get from a butcher in the volume they need it. Maybe the act of hunting helps them release tension and they realize they miss it.

But yeah I'd have loved to have seen more of this. There's some stuff in Midnight Sun that hints at the stuff the Cullens get up to, but it's more like, Emmett and Jasper's complicated chess game with multiple boards, or Alice and Rosalie designing clothes on the computer. I don't think SM really thought about 'what would a vampire doctor who wants to be as human as possible be researching in his spare time?' and so we missed out on some of this stuff.

Your new life as a vampire started shortly after turning eighteen years old, knowing you’d be stuck on that number forever, you wanted to make the best of it and bring good into this world.

However, because of the age you were at the time you had changed, it had you developing a mental trauma. A little while later, you started hunting down newborns, mostly teenager ones who couldn’t control themselves as you brutally kill them. It didn’t feel right in the beginning, but than you started seeing this more of a calling and what you were meant to do for the world. You believed you were doing a good deed for the world by making the streets a little safer to walk on day or night.

As you would hunt them down, you would turn it into a little game as a source of entertainment. At first, you start out by chasing them mockingly as you knew they were very much aware of your presence, which is followed by a hysteric and manic like laughter sprouting from your dead lungs. When it finally leads to the deadly encounter with you in dark alleyways, you take that opportunity to sneak up behind them and rip their heads from the rest of them before starting the fires. This activity unexpectedly begins to scare you a little, but fighting against the urge for a kill is stronger than your resistance as you continue doing so. You kept this up until after meeting your mate, Edward Cullen. Even the first little while of your relationship with Edward started off a bit rocky, as you both realize how mentally unstable you are and soon enough, the rest of the family had become aware before they had started to do whatever to help you overcome these urges.

Instead of giving up on killing completely, you had switched from killing newborns to killing the criminals that walked the streets, some even involved the most dangerous street gangs. You kept this hidden, or at least you tried to as you keep forgetting Edward can read minds. After finding out this side of you, he confronts you and you admit it with such shame you never felt before. Once the dark secret was out, Edward had come up with a solution that could either work in your favor or do the complete opposite. The idea was to attend Forks High School together as new students, and that’s where you meet best friend, Bella Swan.

You shared more classes with Bella than you did with Edward. How you meet is quite amusing, it was during gym class and you were playing volleyball. When she smacked the ball over the net, it hit you and she immediately comes to you with rushed, yet sincere apologies.

“I’m sorry! I told them not to let me play.” Bella says.

“It’s fine, really. No harm done.” you promise, smiling reassuringly at her.

From them on, you both become about as much inseparable as you and Edward were, loving the fact you studied at the same school together.

Not long after Bella learns of the vampire world, you trusted her enough to tell her of your past while expecting harsh judgment. But you were pleasantly surprised when she sat there with you, listening to you with any judgments whatsoever. Bella was your next go to for a shoulder to cry on, she was a good listener, best friend. In return, you offer her your ears as well and little advice.

Edward was pleased with the fact the solution was solved, and so it was.

Something that tends to pop up in my mind every now and then, though i haven't really cared about Twilight for some years, is that no one really talks about how Rosalie could theoretically have children thanks to Breaking Dawn.

A big driving part of Rosalie's character is her anger at the loss of her humanity, specifically the loss at the potential of children and traditional family. Which makes sense, becoming a vampire feezes you at the state you were changed both physically and mentally and a desire for children was at the forefront of her mind the night she was changed.

But then Breaking Dawn opens that possibility back up to her with the establishment of vampires being able to reproduce with humans.

All the inner workings of a human is replaced with various strengths of venom for a vampire. Their saliva is venom, the lubricant of their eyes is venom, their skin and body is a hardened solid state of venom, and their reproductive fluid is vemon. And that reproductive venom was enough for Bella to get pregnant.

Going on the assumption that all venom is the same, given that the process of changing is the same for all genders and there is never any mention or hint towards a difference dependent on the gender of the vampire that turned you, then theoretically Rosalie's reproductive venom could also be enough to impregnate a human. Thus resulting in her being able to achieve her desire for biological children. Things would even go much more smoothly this time given they know what to expect l.

The obstacles would then come from figuring out how to do this intentionally.

Artificial insemination is obviously the way to go and they could even choose an egg donor with similar features to Emmett, but then they would have the technical and moral struggle of finding a surrogate who is either willing to die or be changed. We know that Rosalie doesn't have an issue with letting a human die but neither Carlisle or Edward would allow that. As for changing the surrogate, they would have to carefully screen and choose someone they'd be willing to join their coven and i get the the feeling Rosalie would view the surrogate as parental competition over the child.

Another, and more preferred method given the Cullen's beliefs, would be to wait until medical technology advanced enough to the creation of artificial wombs for a baby to gestate in separate from any human body.

Rosalie could even help speed this advancement up even if the technology is only made available to the family due to their need to stay out of the limelight. She's certainly intelligent enough to, with her several degrees in medicine, astrophysics, business, and electrical engineering. She may be able to figure out how to create a working artificial womb after a few relatively inconsequential years of studying bio engineering and more medical feilds.

By using eggs from the same donor Rosalie and Emmett could also both have biological children that are even half siblings.

And that is it for this rant, i think way to deeply into implications of something im sure Stephenie Meyer didnt even consider

emmett bounced around the foster system a lot as a kid - he was sweet and meant well, but all of his rambunctious energy made it hard for adoptions to work out. it did leave him with a large number of foster siblings and parents that he still attempts to keep up with, like veronica lodge, tony stark, and jason todd. eventually though he did find a family! he knows how to work hard and he’s definitely friendly, (he managed to make friends with albus severus potter, though al may not be too keen to admit it) but in terms of his life and his future he’s kind of aimless. he slings drinks at zodiac, which is where he met josie mccoy, one of his good friends, and occasionally moonlights as a bouncer - the kid is deceptively strong, and it doesn’t hurt that it means he gets to work with his foster sister ciri riannon. he recently got out of a relationship with astoria greengrass, and still harbors feelings for her despite the way they left things.

his first nightmare mimicked the bear attack that resulted in his need to be turned into a vampire. the pain was awful, but it ended on a mysterious note - a blurry face half-covered by blonde hair. a face emmett knows without a doubt that he loves, even though he’s never seen her before in his life. 

more recently, after a dream about a car crash he wasn’t involved in but felt threatened by nonetheless, he woke to an unfamiliar set of car keys on his dresser. it turns out they belonged to a jeep, which he assumes is now his, despite not knowing where it came from.

If the turning into a vampire was a fixed part of the ending of twilight, but not the smeyer self insert happy ever after: pregnancy, perfect daughter, idilic cottage (and the whole imprinting mess). How do you think the story could have gone while keeping true to Bella's character. My guess is a Voulturi ultimatum, and a college studying literature epilogue with an actual conflict in the middle (and also the whole saga happening in college with everyone in their 20s not high school).

I think the Volturi ultimatum is a good “out” as a way to force Bella to become a vampire without her dying in childbirth. As it is, it often felt like an afterthought and not a real threat. The Volturi show up in Eclipse and she’s still human and they are like ‘whatever’ about it, but Bree is instantly killed for having been part of Victoria’s newborns even though she herself did nothing wrong. So the Volturi threat just didn’t feel that serious; even Edward downplays it like ‘oh it might be 30 years before they think about you again, or we’ll just hide you.” So having it really be a threat with a shorter time crunch, with it being something that is actually forced, could have been interesting. 

But I also like the idea that all the compromises made in Eclipse would actually MEAN something. They wrestled with the timing of vampirism and marriage, if Edward would be the one to change her, etc. They came up with a compromise they both could live with  . . . and then she enjoyed her honeymoon so much she thought of staying human longer, and then she got pregnant and was dying and had to be turned to save her life, so all the back and forth in Eclipse ending up feeling pointless, and we got a guilt-free vampire Bella: she was dying, she wanted it, she loves it, Edward doesn’t have to carry the guilt that Carlisle does; and even though Bella talked about wanting to be a vampire and the ‘perks’ of being a Cullen/vampire, she selflessly died in childbirth so she doesn’t have to look bad for pursuing immortality, either. I really wanted to see how the aftermath of them following through with their wedding-sex-vampirism plan would have worked out, if Edward would have felt guilty, how Bella adjusted. Breaking Dawn just didn’t have any of that; she is vampirized because she’s dying just like most of the Cullens were, and then she’s instantly good at it. 

So I guess what I actually wanted is maybe she’s changed on the honeymoon; Isle Esme (secretly Isle Bella????) was chosen not just for the ~romance but because it’s secluded enough for a newborn. (They clean their own damn beach house, no risking housekeepers’ lives). Maybe the rest of the fam comes to visit/help in small groups. Bella struggles a bit at first, questions her choices, but ultimately gets the hang of it. Edward swings from guilt to pride as he watches Bella adjust to her vampire nature. I kind of guessed she’d be better at vampiring than average because Main Character but it was just TOO easy, such a non-issue in BD. I want to see a little struggle and adjustment at least. 

The other option is that Bella is somehow fatally injured in Eclipse and has to be turned. I guess Victoria could bite her or something, but I was thinking more physical injuries. Edward has to bite her to save her and so we end up with vampire Bella and it’s much the same as BD but no baby. Can still have all the Charlie weirdness I guess. 

Part of me still loves the idea that she’s actually mortally wounded in the van accident and Edward takes her to Carlisle, mimicking the Rosalie/Emmett situation. Then Bella REALLY gets the Full Cullen Experience of waking up as a vampire after being “saved” and having to adjust to that AND leave her life behind AND get to know these people AND fall in love with Edward.

At first it’s genuinely as a joke, he wasn’t actually flirting until he realized he actually liked you

He probably realized he liked you after you shot back a cheesy pick up line, jokingly of course at first anyway

After he realizes he likes more than a friend he unintentionally makes it very obvious

Just looks at you like he’s in awe, with a love sick grin on his face

He’ll invite you to hangout more, just you, no one else

Before you know it the both of you are basically as close as actual couples are

Flirting and teasing each other, often going out together, sleepovers, etc.

The Bakusquad picks up on all of this and is constantly teasing the two of you

Just casually asks you out one day

“Hey, are you gonna be busy later?”

“Okay great! I was just wondering if I could take you as my date to the movies?”

Just goes about so casually as if he isn’t freaking out internally

Honestly, it's pretty hard to become friends with this guy, let alone lovers, especially if you're human

It takes him awhile to warm up and get used to your scent

He needs to know that you are a good person before he even thinks about befriending you

But eventually, you can win him over(with lots of help from Alice) and become friends

Anyone of the Cullens comes with Alice as a package deal lol

From there on he's a pretty good friend, though he'll try to hide the fact that he's a vampire for as long as possible

But you can't help but notice him and his families odd behavior

I could imagine you stressing over school work and Jasper noticing

So he helps with both putting you at ease and helping you study

Before long the “study sessions” are just your way of spending time with him both in and out of school

You start noticing how at ease you are around him, or when you get angry, sad, annoyed, second later you have calmed down

It’s also pretty easy to talk to him, he’s a great listener, and it’s nice to hear him talk too (especially with that southern drawl of his)

When you do find yourself crushing on him, he knows, even before you do

And he finds himself liking you too…

He might try to distance himself but your too stubborn to let that happen so you keep being friends with him

Lets be honest, you’ll probably have to confess first, and when you do he doesn’t know how to feel

On one hand, you actually like him back! On the other… he’s literally a blood sucking fairytale

So, he confess too. Not only his feelings but the fact that he isn’t who you think he is

To his surprise, you had your suspicions but didn’t really care, if he had wanted to hurt you by now he would have.. but he didn’t

Next thing you know you’re being introduced to the rest of the Cullens

Emmett:

Could definitely imagine you being one of those quiet kids who keeps to yourself but happens to sit next to Emmett, who can’t pay attention in class whatsoever

Despite the fact he’s done high school a million times, he can never remember the subjects he learns about, so lucky you gets to tutor him!

Picks on you and teases you a lot

Try’s to get you into sports: football, basketball, soccer, baseball, you name it.

If you happen to be into sports, expect to get an earful and debate your favorite sports teams

He’s a bit of charmer when he wants to be so he’ll flirt every once and awhile

However, when you happen to flirt back(just to catch him off guard or tease him) he actually gets flustered

And before you know it this show off has a crush on you, and only realized it cause you happened to be bold and tease him back

Suddenly he’s showing off a lot more than usual

Like picking you up and throwing you over his shoulder, no matter how big or small you are your weight doesn’t even phase him

Starts driving you to and from school

He gets more touchy. Throws his around your shoulder/waist, sitting closer, etc.

You might even notice Alice and the rest of the Cullens talking to you more

And eventually he confesses his big secret before telling you how he feels

And once again, you will be brought over to his house for dinner

On god thanks sm for this ask!! Lowkey that anon tapped into an insane part of my brain (ie the part that has studied Dante and Paradise lost) and made me go... hey the Cullens lowkey kinda COULD rep the seven deadly sins.. Like as theories go clearly Smeyer did NOT mean this but like.. it kinda fits? So here are the Cullens as the actual deadly sins (number 6 will shock you!)

Carlisle - Pride , okay this is by far the most obvious. Pride is described as simultaneously the most angelic and demonic of the sins. And that fits our boy to a tee. Carlisle is very self centred and tends to put himself first. He is also neglectful of others wants and tends to assume others will want to do as he does. So yeah.. pride.

Esme - Sloth, less here in the literal terms, as of course she can’t sleep. But Sloth can mean taking the easy way out and failing to do, ie “evil happens when good people fail to act”. Esme is a good person, she cares about her family and the wolves, but she also allows her family to hurt those around them and insult and endanger the wolves. So her failure to stand up for people is what makes her sloth.

Rosalie - Envy, again obvious. But Rose is characterised by wanting what others have. She is allows her envy towards Bella to harm others, and she makes herself miserable by constantly wanting what she can’t have. (She is also probs the one Cullen Smeyer wrote proper flaws into)

Emmett - Gluttony, unusual choice? Yeah! I was on the lust train at first. But he is just kinda sex positive which isn’t a sin. However he does harm eco systems and kill endangered animal for fun and food. Like bro strick to deer? He also has only ever killed humans cos he was hungry and seems to think it’s a fair excuse.

Alice - Greed, she buys designer clothes to wear once and throws them away. She plays the stock market for fun. She has no concept of money, and just uses it for her own pleasure. She’s greed all the way.

Jasper - Lust, weird choice? Maybe but also maybe not? Lust isn’t primarily sexual and can also refer to desire, for objects or power or success. Lust makes you a slave to your desires and Jasper is the character with the least self control. He is ruled by his id, so yeah he’s lust.

Edward - Wrath, Edward is extremely wrathful. He is always ready to turn to violence. It’s notable that his “rebellious phase” was a murder spree. But wrath also manifests as misanthropy, which Eddie had in spades, and self destructive behaviour, which again we see. He is angry, with the world and with himself, so he is wrath!

hey i have a question. if u had to get rid of one twilight character, who would it be? i’m asking a bunch of people cuz i’m interested in u guys opinions.

JASPER MOTHERFUCKING HALE

Someone else brought up a really good point that every single aspect of his character can be given to the other characters easily.

Southern gentleman? Emmett could be that. His power could have been Esme’s since her entire character is being compassionate and loving, it would make sense for her to be intensely empathetic in her human life, which could easily become her vampiric gift. Battle strategy against newborns could be Carlisle’s domain since he's been around the longest and has studied vampire physiology from the perspective of a doctor.

Jasper is the only vampire in the coven that could be perceived as a more typical vampire in his bloodthirst, which could be a trait given to Edward, given his vigilante years, Emmett due to his general apathy regarding human life, if someone in the family “makes a mistake” he doesn't really care (seen in midnight sun), or even Alice. She only had her visions to guide her and knew she would eventually end up with the Cullens, and just because she sees her potential in vegetarian vampirism doesn't mean she always complied by those rules.

Jasper barely appears in the story, he's just there occasionally to bring serenity into a tense situation and does fuckall the rest of the time. He only becomes a major aspect to the plot in Eclipse, though his presence is largely undermined by the central focus on the love triangle. He's honestly a bland and underdeveloped character and doesn't add much to the plot.

It's granted to say this but Meyer including a confederate in her story and not addressing any issues within that aspect of his character is incredibly concerning and honestly has zero value in his storyline. It's worthless racist horseshit and Jasper is essentially devoid of value in the series entirely. His presence only serves to be problematic.

Request by anon: Wait, omg I’m so happy I found a blog that’s updated recently and I’m definitely gonna ✨stalk✨ your blog and read all your writing after hw but if you’re still doing requests, I thought of something that I would just love to see written. And this could be short or something, y’know? It can be whatever you want it to be, but what if the reader is somewhat friends with the Cullens? Reader (maybe like 20 years old?) is invited to their house one weekend after bumping into Alice and becoming friends and from passing conversation, reader knows that Carlisle is a doctor so she asks him if he could help her with her organic chemistry hw cause she’s studying to be a med student? 

A/n Wow I’m so sorry this took me so long! It’s such a cute request and I loved writing it! Thanks for sending it in and for being patient with me :)

Shoot.

Mentally, I groan, stopping my progress towards my car.

I still have chem homework.

I fiddle with the keys in my hand, contemplating. You could go home…lay in bed…maybe with a pint of ice cream…and pass out in a stress and sugar-induced coma.

Oh, how tempting.

But then I remind myself of why I’m putting myself through the hell that is a STEM degree, and turn on my heel, heading back to campus. I know I won’t get any work done if I go home, so the library it is! Thank goodness it’s open twenty-four hours, because it’s creeping up to eleven and I don’t have the heart to return to one of the academic buildings.

Seeing as it’s Friday night, the library isn’t crowded. Still, I push past all the tables on the first floor and head up to my favorite spot on the second. Settling in at my favorite partially secluded table, I pull out my organic chemistry textbook, pop in my earbuds, and get to work.

A small, pale hand skims over the table near my book, and I look up with a start.

Alice Cullen stands by my desk, clutching a set of books that look too heavy for her thin arms, but she seems to be managing fine. She and I met during the first week of classes, and have been tentative friends ever since. We don’t see much of each other, given our varying degree programs, but she always greets me with a friendly smile and an offer to join her to study. I pull out my headphones, and give her a tired smile. “Hey, how’s it going?”

“Good!” She smiles excitedly, somehow keeping her energy levels at—I check the time on my phone—1:12 am! “Have you been here for long?”

I shrug, feeling the weight of the late hour on my shoulders. “Since around eleven. I was going home but then I forgot I have o-chem homework. I don’t think it should be taking me this long, but I’m struggling. Thankfully only half of it is due in the morning. The rest isn’t due until after the weekend.”

Alice peers over to look at my book and the problems I work through in my notebook. “Oh, those do look hard. But you know, my dad is a doctor, and he probably knows this stuff like the back of his hand. He’d be more than happy to help you.”

I blanch. An invitation to the Cullen’s house? And free help on o-chem homework?

But then I remember my manners. “Oh, thank you, but I couldn’t—”

“Please,” she squeaks, balancing her books in one arm and using the other to retrieve her phone. “We’d be happy to have you over! I’ll let my family know. Does tomorrow around lunchtime work?”

“Uh,” I swallow, not sure I’m believing my ears. “That works great, thank you! I can bring the food?”

She shakes her head, waving off the offer. “Don’t worry about it—Mom loves to cook and will be excited to really use the kitchen. Oh! And there’s this new series my sisters and I have been dying to watch. It’s called Broadchurch. Have you heard of it? Maybe we can start it and see if it’s any good!”

I nod dumbly, too tired and relieved for the help to refuse again. “That sounds fun! Thank you.”

“Of course,” she smiles, shrugging like it’s nothing. “What are friends for?”

My smile softens. She considers us friends. “Do you want to walk out together? It’s pretty late.”

She beams and waits while I collect my stuff.

I pull up to the front of the massive house.

Alice is waiting for me on the porch. She waves excitedly, and I notice her fiancé standing near the door, looking uncomfortable. I stifle a chuckle. It’s well-known that Jasper, introvert in every sense of the word, fell hard for Alice who is the embodiment of an extravert. I wave, grabbing my backpack and stepping out of the car.

“Welcome,” Alice practically shouts. Jasper gives me a polite nod.

I smile at the two of them, calling out my hello’s and climbing the stairs to the porch. The second Jasper opens the door, I’m greeted by the warm smile of Esme Cullen.

“Hello, Y/n, welcome to our home! We are so happy to have you here.” She extends a warm smile, one I can’t help but return immediately.

Alice leads us straight to the living room, where two of her adoptive siblings, Emmett and Rosalie, lounge. Rosalie sketches something I can’t see, and Emmett yells loudly at the TV, losing at a video game.

“Beat it, Emmett,” Alice chirps, dancing over and taking the controller from his hands. “We’re going to watch Broadchurch.”

Putting his frustration at the game aside, Emmett grins, standing and ruffling Alice’s hair. “Alright, I was getting my ass kicked anyway. Hey, Y/n, good to see you again.”

I return his greeting, familiar with Emmett from an intro to theatre class we had together last semester. The image of his interpretation of Juliet for our final project comes to mind, and I have to stifle a laugh. Emmett goes to leave the room, pulling Jasper with him.

“Send Bella down, would you,” Alice calls after them, already settling on the couch. “Rose, you know Y/n, right?”

Rosalie looks up from her sketching. She smiles briefly at me, then returns to her task. I sit awkwardly next to Alice, waiting for Bella so we can start the show.

“There aren’t many women in STEM.”

My head shoots up, wide eyes turning in Rosalie’s direction. She doesn’t look up from her work, but I know she’s addressing me—Alice is studying fashion merchandising and design.

“Y-yeah,” I stammer. Alice’s older sister is just so intimidating. Well-spoken, obviously intelligent, tall, prettier than anyone I’ve ever met, and top of her law class. She’s not exactly warm either, like her mother or sister—even now, there’s a cold bite to her tone. But the edges of her lips quirk up, and I can tell she’s being nice.

“Don’t let the guys push you around. What you’re doing is important, and you’re probably smarter than them. What do you want to do with your degree?”

The answer, always on my heart and mind, is automatic. “I want to be a doctor. So, med school is next.”

She nods once. “Good.”

And apparently that’s the end of our conversation.

I try to hide my smile by rummaging around in my backpack for my water bottle. It’s nice to feel supported.

Bella comes gliding down the stairs and twists into the living room, folding herself easily onto the love seat. She greets me, and then tosses me the throw over the back of her couch. Alice nods as if forgetting something, then reaches into a basket hidden between our couch and Rosalie’s chair and produces three more blankets, throwing two to her sisters and keeping one for herself. She shoots me a grin as each of us, even the serious Rosalie, snuggles up.

Alice stands, turning off the lights and then wraps back in her blanket and scoots near me on the couch. “I hope this is good!” With a grin, she opens Netflix and plays the first episode.

Broadchurch does not disappoint. Before I know it, we’re halfway through the second episode, eyes glued to the screen. Bella, who was definitely reading a book under her blanket at the start, has put it to the side, leaning forward and watching the show intently.

The front door creaks, then clicks closed, and Alice smiles, pressing pause on the remote. “Dad’s home.”

Before long, the famed local doctor comes in to say hi to the girls and to greet me. He’s just as welcoming as his wife!

“Alice told me you are having trouble with some organic chemistry homework?”

I nod, hoping it’s not too much to ask for his help. “I got a good start on some of the problems last night, but I keep messing up. I’m not really sure where I’m going wrong—there’s no answer key so I can’t work backwards through the problems.”

He nods, casually resting his hands in the pocket of his slacks. “I remember o-chem homework quite well.” He grins conspiratorially. “It is the bane of many a med student’s existence. Why don’t you girls finish up your episode and then join Esme and me in the kitchen for lunch? I can take a look at your homework if you like.”

Relief washes over me. “That would be great, thank you so much.”

He smiles warmly. “Of course. Now, if you all will excuse me….” With a twinkle in his eye, he leaves us to rejoin his wife.

This family is so nice! I wonder why they get so much flack at school?

Alice resumes the episode, and soon my musings are washed away as I try to piece together the mystery of the murder before the detectives can.

Esme is a wonderful cook. Carlisle sings her praises but doesn’t fix a plate for himself, saying he ate plenty as she was cooking. We all sit down at the table, though I’m the only one who eats in earnest — Bella claims to be filled up on snacks, Rose says she’s on a diet, and Alice takes a small helping for herself, every now and then poking the chicken in mild disgust. I don’t see what the problem is, the food is fantastic!

Carlisle sits down next to me, and I slide my textbook and notebook in his direction. He smiles, looking almost nostalgic. “I remember these. The good news is, as a doctor, you won’t be doing much of this in day-to-day life, if at all. But it is important for some courses you will take in medical school, so it’s best to master the concepts now. See, on number nineteen, you start the problem correctly, but get lost once you have to balance the equation to continue. Instead of waiting until the middle to balance, I would do that first, that way, you have a solid base before moving on to solve the rest of the problem.”

I nod, peering over at the paper intently. I hadn’t tried that strategy before.

Carlisle takes out a pen, and begins scratching out an equation. Then, he grins, shaking his head, and crosses it out, starting again in much neater handwriting. “Forgive my penmanship. Though, if you decide to continue and become a practicing doctor, your handwriting will soon be indecipherable, too.”

From across the table, Rosalie snorts, and I can’t help but laugh along. It seems almost a rite of passage for a doctor to have horrendous handwriting.

In clearer script, Carlisle continues working out the problem, then slides the paper over for me to see. He explains what he did at each step, and I nod along, trying to commit as much of it to memory as possible. He works out another problem in the same way, then asks me to try on my own. I smile tentatively as I go, hesitant to accept that I actually know how to do the problem now.

But I do.

It takes concentration to work through the steps, but I can, which is a far cry from where I was last night. Carlisle waves off my thanks, saying I just needed to try a different approach, but I had it within me all along. I bring up another section I had issues with—structures of the elements—and Carlisle teaches me a better strategy for memorizing a few and then figuring out the rest. By the time Esme and Bella have put the food away, my homework is done—in a fourth of the time it would have taken me struggling through it on my own.

“Seriously, Dr. Cullen, thank you so much.”

He smiles pleasantly, handing me back my textbook. “Of course. If you need help again, just come on over. I know the girls love having the company, and my wife and I enjoyed the opportunity to meet you as well.”

Esme appears behind her husband, laying her hands affectionately on his shoulders. “Absolutely, Y/n. Please come over any time.”

I pack up my homework and thank them once again for lunch and for the help. Alice darts to my side, grinning. “Ready to finish the episode?”

I feel so much lighter now that my homework is done, and I don’t feel guilty at all for spending time with my new friends. In fact, I may even indulge in that ice cream when I get home.

“Absolutely.”
